When to Plan Your Canadian Wildflower Adventure

Due to Canada’s northern latitude, wildflower season typically starts later than many international visitors might expect. While cherry blossoms may bloom in Vancouver by March, most of Canada’s wildflower displays don’t begin until late April or May.

The season then rolls like a wave across the country from west to east and south to north, with some Arctic and alpine regions not reaching peak bloom until July.

Coastal British Columbia sees the earliest blooms, followed by southern Ontario and the Prairies in May, while Maritime provinces and mountain regions peak in June and early July.

The extended daylight hours of the Canadian spring and early summer mean you’ll have plenty of time for flower viewing, with some northern regions offering nearly round-the-clock viewing opportunities during peak season.

1. The Okanagan Blossom Trail, British Columbia

1. Great Ocean Road, Australia

Almost a rite of passage for visitors to Australia, the Great Ocean Road is a gorgeous highway that connects the southern coast from Torquay to Allansford.

As you make your way along the coast, you’ll get to wind your way across 243 kilometers, passing through authentic shipwrecks, beaches, charming coastal villages, lush rainforests, and rocky coastlines.

One of the most iconic sights of the Great Ocean Road is the Twelve Apostles, a set of towering limestone stacks that protrude from the ocean and create a breathtaking scene (only eight out of the twelve are left, though!).

Aside from that, other wonderful stops you can make as you drive along include Great Otway National Park to explore the rainforest, Bells Beach for a gorgeous beach, Lorne for artsy small-town vibes, and Kennett River to see koalas!

3. Icefields Parkway, Canada

Stretching 232 kilometers through the heart of the Canadian Rockies between Banff and Jasper National Parks, the Icefields Parkway offers one of North America’s most dramatic mountain drives. While you could technically complete the route in about three hours, you’ll want to allow at least 2-3 days to appreciate the countless viewpoints and hiking trails.

The highway showcases over 100 ancient glaciers, turquoise lakes, and cascading waterfalls. Must-see stops include the Columbia Icefield, where you can walk on ancient glacier ice, the pristine waters of Peyto Lake, and the thundering Athabasca Falls. Wildlife sightings are common, with chances to spot bears, elk, and mountain goats.

While the parkway is open year-round, summer (June-September) offers the most accessible conditions. Winter driving requires special preparation but rewards visitors with frozen waterfalls and snow-capped peaks without the crowds.

4. Big Sur, United States

Even though Highway 1 through Big Sur is only 90 miles long, this gorgeous road is dotted by wonderful stops to make every single mile of the way, so we recommend treating it as a multi-day road trip rather than a scenic drive in order to make the most of it.

Offering views of the alluring Santa Lucia Mountains to one side and rugged California coastline vistas to the other, driving through Big Sur is one of the most exciting experiences you can have not just in California but quite likely in the entire world.

As for what to see here, two of the most popular landmarks are Hearst Castle in the town of San Simeon and the gorgeous European-style Carmel-by-the-Sea.

Aside from that, nature reigns supreme in Big Sur, with plenty of state parks scattered all over the highway. These include the Point Lobos State Nature Reserve for hikes with coastal views, Julia Pfeiffer State Park to see a waterfall crashing down from a cliff into the ocean, and Garrapata Beach for seaside and forest hikes. Make sure you also make a stop at Pfeiffer Beach, which is a beach made up of purple sand!

As a note, Big Sur is a section of the longer Highway 1, which runs all the way from San Diego to Seattle along the Pacific Coast. This is one of the most beautiful roads in the entire world if you’re up for a more extended adventure!

5. Black Forest Scenic Drive, Germany

If fairytale-like villages and charming forests that look straight out of a storybook sound like your ideal places to spend time, the B500 highway from Baden Baden to Freiburg in Germany’s Black Forest is guaranteed to please.

Even though it’s only 40 miles long, this gorgeous drive will allow you to experience old-time Germany, with half-timbered houses dotting the villages along the way, cozy coffee shops, cuckoo clock workshops, and local distilleries being just a few of the highlights you’ll find along the way.

This road is also perfect for those in nature, as you’ll get the chance to stop at plenty of trailheads for hiking. There are also many accommodation options inside the Black Forest in case you want to spend the night in nature!

6. Ha Giang Loop, Vietnam

High in northern Vietnam, the Ha Giang Loop is a dazzling road that winds its way through striking canyons and breathtaking limestone mountain passes.

Starting in Ha Giang City, this road will also give you the chance to experience authentic Vietnamese culture, not to mention you’ll also get to try local food everywhere you look because no matter how remote a section may seem, you’ll always be able to find a roadside food stall.

You’ll begin the Ha Giang Loop by driving across lush forested hills before arriving at the Vietnamese border with China, where you’ll find a series of limestone karts above the treeline.

From here, you’ll start descending into the valley before winding your way through mountains and canyons, with sights of turquoise-colored rivers and waterfalls appearing every mile of the way.

7. Jebel Hafeet Mountain Road, UAE

Rising from the desert near Al Ain, in the United Arab Emirates, this 11.7-kilometer mountain road delivers an unforgettable driving experience. With 21 corners carved into the limestone mountain, the drive up takes just 30 minutes but we’d plan for 2-3 hours to enjoy the sunset views and explore the summit.

Frequently rated among the world’s greatest driving roads, the perfectly engineered three-lane highway climbs 1,219 meters through the rugged Hajar Mountains. The summit offers spectacular views across the desert, with a luxury hotel and private palace near the top.

Best driven early morning or late afternoon to avoid the intense desert heat, the road is particularly magical at sunset when the surrounding mountains glow orange. The road is immaculately maintained and accessible year-round, though summer temperatures (late May to early October) can be extreme.

8. Ruta 40, Argentina

Stretching over 5,000 kilometers along the Andes Mountains from La Quiaca to Río Gallegos, Ruta 40 is Argentina’s epic answer to Route 66. While the entire route would take weeks to complete, most travelers focus on the Patagonian section from Bariloche to El Calafate, which deserves at least 10 days.

The highway passes through 20 national parks, crosses 27 mountain passes, and connects to Mount Fitz Roy and Los Glaciares National Park. Notable stops include the wine regions of Mendoza, the ancient rock art of Cueva de las Manos, and the dramatic peaks of Patagonia. While much of the road is now paved, some remote sections remain gravel.

Though Patagonian winds can be intense, summer (December-February) offers the most reliable conditions. Winter brings beautiful snow scenes but challenging driving conditions and closed sections.

9. Captain Cook Highway, Australia

Hugging the Queensland coast between Cairns and Port Douglas, this 75-kilometer stretch of road offers one of the rare places worldwide where two UNESCO World Heritage sites meet – the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest. Though driveable in just over an hour, allow at least a day to explore the pristine beaches and rainforest walks.

The winding coastal road offers stunning ocean views at every turn, with numerous beaches like Ellis Beach and Palm Cove perfect for swimming (only within designated areas during stinger season). Rex Lookout provides spectacular photo opportunities of the coastline, while detours into the rainforest reveal hidden swimming holes and ancient vegetation.

The road is well-maintained and accessible year-round, though the wet season (November-April) brings spectacular waterfalls alongside occasional flooding. Early morning drives offer the best chance to avoid traffic and tour buses.

10. Florence to Ravello, Italy

If you’re up for exploring the gorgeous Amalfi Coast in Italy, there’s no better way to do that than by driving the highway from Florence to Ravello.

Not only will you get the chance to make a pit stop in Rome along the way, but you will also feel as though you’re in 1953’s Roman Holiday movie as you make your way through the rugged Italian coastline.

Culture, colorful medieval villages atop hills, and picture-perfect coastal views are all elements of this beautiful road, not to mention you’ll also drive past several of Italy’s top destinations like Rome and Positano in case you want to stop for a few days to explore them!

12. Ring Road, Iceland

If a road trip made up of extremely rugged and untouched landscapes is what you’re after, the 837-mile Ring Road across the entire island of Iceland is one of the most beautiful roads in the world you can take.

Starting and ending in the city of Reykjavik, this road is a loop where you’ll get to stop and see some of the most famous highlights in Iceland, including the Blue Lagoon, the Hallgrimskirkja Church, and Reynisfjara beach (a black beach), to name just a few! Of course, sights like waterfalls, glacier lagoons, and geysers are guaranteed!

13. Highway 395 (Sierra Nevada Mountains), United States

Starting in Los Angeles and ending in the idyllic Lake Tahoe, Highway 395 is a 450-mile route. This is of the most beautiful roads in the world, not only for its striking views of the Sierra Nevada Mountains but also for the wide array of incredible stops you can make along the way.

A few of the best stops to make along Highway 395 include Mono Lake to see otherworldly-looking landscapes, Bristlecone Pine Forest to witness some of the oldest trees in the world, the Devil’s Postpile to gaze at rare geology, and Bodie to explore a real-life ghost town!

As a bonus, a short detour from the main highway will get you to places like Death Valley National Park and Joshua Tree National Park, both of which are two of California’s most interesting national parks to visit!

14. Grossglockner High Alpine Road, Austria

This 48-kilometer toll road through the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park delivers Austria’s most spectacular alpine experience. While driveable in a few hours, plan for a full day to explore the 36 hairpin bends, educational exhibits, and hiking trails along the route.

Rising to 2,504 meters at Hochtor Pass, the road offers close-up views of Austria’s highest peak, the Grossglockner (3,798m), and the dramatic Pasterze Glacier. The Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe visitor center provides the best viewpoints and wildlife watching opportunities, including spotting marmots and ibexes.

The road is typically open from early May to late October, weather permitting, with peak wildflower season in July and August. Early morning drives offer the best chance of clear weather and fewer tourists, while sunset brings spectacular alpenglow to the surrounding peaks.

15. Crown Range Road, New Zealand

This 47-kilometer alpine pass connects Queenstown to Wanaka and is New Zealand’s highest main road. While the drive can be completed in about an hour, you’ll want to allow at least half a day to properly enjoy the numerous viewpoints and historic stops.

The road climbs through a series of dramatic switchbacks to the Crown Range summit (1,121 meters), offering breathtaking views of the Wakatipu Basin and the Southern Alps (Ka Tiritiri o te Moana). Don’t miss the historic Cardrona Hotel, one of New Zealand’s oldest pubs, or the summer hiking and mountain biking opportunities.

While the road is fully sealed, winter conditions (June-August) can be challenging, requiring snow chains and extra caution. The route is particularly stunning during sunrise and sunset, when the surrounding peaks are bathed in golden light. Spring brings the added bonus of wildflowers dotting the alpine meadows.

16. Ring of Kerry Scenic Drive, Ireland

The Ring of Kerry is a full loop that begins in the city of Killarney and ends there, taking you all around Ireland to see the best this island country in Europe has to offer.

Over a total of 111 miles, you’ll drive past some of the most quintessential Ireland sights, including medieval castles, expansive fields of green, ancient forts, windy shorelines, and just about everything in between!

While an entire post would be required to list everything single stop worth making on the Ring of Kerry, some of the absolutely can’t-miss ones include the Ross Castle, Torc Waterfalls, Killarney National Park, and the Gap of Dunloe. We guarantee you’ll LOVE it!

17. Garden Route, South Africa

Stretching all over the South African coast from Mossell Bay to Tsitsikamma, the Garden Route is a coastal road where you’ll get to experience some of the best South Africa has to offer.

From basking on golden beaches to going on thrilling safaris on game reserves, there’s a little something for everyone to do on this incredibly interesting highway.

Some of the best activities to do along the Garden Route include visiting ostrich farms in Klein Karoo, seeing meerkats at sunrise in Oudtshoorn, gazing at sea lions at Plettenberg Bay, hiking over mountains, eating world-class oysters at Knysna, seeing migrating whales in winter, and going vineyard-hopping in the quaint town of Stellenbosch.

18. Carretera Austral, Chile

Known as Ruta 7, this 1,240-kilometer highway through Chilean Patagonia presents one of South America’s most epic road trips. Plan for at least 7-10 days to properly explore this remote route from Puerto Montt to Villa O’Higgins, though many travelers spend two weeks or more discovering its hidden gems.

The partially paved road winds through pristine temperate rainforests, past marble caves, hanging glaciers, and turquoise lakes. Highlights include the Queulat National Park with its hanging glacier, the marble caves of Lake General Carrera, and the Baker River’s intense turquoise waters.

The best time to travel is during the Southern Hemisphere summer (December-March) when days are longer and roads more accessible. Even then, expect some ferry crossings, unpaved sections, and limited services in remote areas. Carrying spare fuel and supplies is essential, but access to some of Patagonia’s most untouched landscapes is the reward.

19. Jeju Island Coastal Road, South Korea

Circling South Korea’s largest island, this 234-kilometer coastal route offers a perfect blend of volcanic landscapes, tropical beaches, and traditional culture. While it is possible to drive the circle in a day, allow 3-4 days to properly explore the UNESCO World Heritage sites and natural wonders along the way.

The route passes the dramatic Seongsan Ilchulbong sunrise peak, mysterious lava tubes, and the island’s iconic dol hareubang stone statues. Don’t miss the stunning waterfalls like Jeongbang, which drops directly into the ocean, or the unique women diver (haenyeo) culture.

Spring (March-May) brings cherry blossoms and mild weather, while autumn (September-November) offers warm seas and fewer tourists. Summer can be busy with domestic tourists, and winter brings dramatic waves and fewer crowds. The road is well-maintained and easy to navigate, with English signage in most areas.

20. Kings Highway, Jordan

This ancient trade route stretches 335 kilometers from Amman to Petra, following the path of countless civilizations through Jordan’s dramatic landscapes. While technically driveable in 5-6 hours, you’ll want to allow 3-4 days to properly explore the historic sites and natural wonders along the way.

The highway winds past some of Jordan’s most significant attractions, including the Byzantine mosaics of Madaba, the Crusader castle of Kerak, and the stunning Dana Biosphere Reserve. The road’s highlight comes at Wadi Mujib, where the highway crosses a spectacular canyon known as the “Grand Canyon of Jordan.” Best visited in spring (March-May) or autumn (September-November) when temperatures are moderate.

While the road is well-maintained, expect occasional military checkpoints and watch for local traffic in villages. The route culminates at the ancient city of Petra, making it an essential part of any Jordan road trip itinerary.

21. Million Dollar Highway, United States

Looping over 233 miles in Colorado, the Million Dollar Highway is one of the most beautiful roads in the world not only for the gorgeous mountain views you’ll get to see mile after mile, but also for the fantastic stops you can make along the way.

Driving the Million Dollar Highway can be done in under two hours, but this type of drive is more about the journey rather than the destination, so we recommend allowing at least a few days to complete it.

Along the way, you’ll get the chance to stop at some of the most beautiful alpine towns Colorado has to offer, including those like Durango, Ridgeway, Telluride, and Ouray, all of which provide wonderful hiking trails and outdoor adventures.

Moreover, if you’re into hiking, make sure you also make a stop at the San Juan National Forest, a park made up of a whopping 1.8 million acres and different ecosystems like high-desert mesas and mountains.

23. Arthur’s Pass, New Zealand

Cutting through the heart of the Southern Alps, this 231-kilometer journey from Christchurch to Greymouth offers New Zealand‘s most dramatic alpine crossing. While it is possible to drive in about three hours, plan for a full day to explore the numerous hiking trails and waterfalls along the route.

The road winds past the iconic limestone formations of Castle Hill, beloved by rock climbers and featured in “The Chronicles of Narnia.” Don’t miss the short walk to the thundering Devil’s Punchbowl Falls or the chance to spot native Kea parrots at Arthur’s Pass Village. While open year-round, winter brings snow and ice to the higher sections, requiring chains. Summer (December-February) offers the most reliable conditions, though the weather can change rapidly at any time of year.

24. Leh-Manali Highway, India

One of the world’s highest motorable roads, this 479-kilometer Himalayan route connects Manali in Himachal Pradesh to Leh in Ladakh. Due to the high altitude and challenging conditions, the journey requires at least 2 days, though 3-4 days allow better acclimatization and exploration. This is a definitely bucket list drive, and not for the faint-hearted!

Crossing five major mountain passes, including the breathtaking Tanglang La (5,328 meters), the route showcases dramatic desert mountains, pristine lakes, and ancient Buddhist monasteries. The highway is only open from mid-June to mid-October, when snow clears from the passes, however, weather can be unpredictable, and the rough road conditions demand a sturdy vehicle.

Despite the challenges, the reward is unparalleled views of the Himalayas and unique cultural experiences in remote mountain villages. Early morning starts are essential to cross passes before afternoon winds pick up.

25. Fundy Coastal Drive, Canada

Following New Brunswick’s Bay of Fundy coastline, this 460-kilometer route offers a unique maritime experience where you can witness the world’s highest tides. The complete journey deserves 3 to 4 days to properly explore the coastal villages, hidden coves, and numerous provincial parks.

Highlights include the Hopewell Rocks, where you can walk on the ocean floor during low tide and kayak around the same spots hours later. The route takes you through Fundy National Park‘s hiking trails and waterfalls and past charming fishing villages like St. Martins with its twin covered bridges.

The drive is best visited between June and October, and it is particularly spectacular during fall foliage season. Don’t miss the chance to spot whales from St. Andrews or sample fresh seafood in Alma. While the road is well-maintained and easily accessible, fog can roll in quickly along coastal sections.

26. Atlas Mountain Route, Morocco

Winding through North Africa’s highest mountain range, this 200-kilometer route from Marrakech to Ouarzazate takes you from bustling medinas to remote Berber villages. Plan for at least 2 to 3 days to properly experience the dramatic landscape changes and cultural encounters.

The road climbs through the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260 meters), where snow-capped peaks give way to palm-filled oases and desert landscapes. Key stops include the UNESCO World Heritage site of Aït Benhaddou, a stunning ancient fortress city, and traditional weekly markets in mountain villages.

While driveable year-round, winter snow can temporarily close the pass, and summer heat can be intense. Spring (March-May) offers comfortable temperatures and blooming almond trees, while autumn (September-November) brings harvest festivals in local villages.

27. Hokkaido Scenic Byway, Japan

Japan’s northernmost island offers a network of scenic routes that showcase dramatically different landscapes across seasons. The most beautiful section runs from Furano to the Shiretoko Peninsula, requiring at least 4 or 5 days to fully appreciate the diverse scenery and cultural stops.

Summer (July-August) brings endless fields of lavender and colorful flower farms in Furano, while autumn paints the mountains in brilliant reds and golds. Winter transforms the route into a snow-covered wonderland, though some mountain passes may close.

Key stops include the Blue Pond of Biei, known for its otherworldly turquoise color, the steaming hot springs of Noboribetsu, and the dramatic coastline of the Shiretoko Peninsula, where you might spot brown bears and sea eagles. The roads are impeccably maintained, but winter driving requires snow tires and careful planning.

28. Marseille to Aix-en-Provence, France

Although short, the highway from Marseille to Aix-en-Provence is one of the most beautiful roads in the world that will give you the opportunity to see what the Provence region in France has to offer.

Not only does this drive start and end in two of the most important cities in southern France, but it will also give you the chance to see one of the most beautiful regions in the entire Europe.

Along the way, you’ll get plenty of opportunities to stop at small villages, discover vineyards spread all over, and get lost in expansive lavender fields that have made this region a photographer’s paradise.

As you drive further from the coast, you’ll quickly understand how Provence inspired many of Vincent Van Gogh’s early paintings. He actually lived in the region for a while because of the creativity boost he got there!

29. Going-to-the-Sun Road, Montana, USA

Cutting through the heart of Montana’s Glacier National Park, this 50-mile engineering marvel offers one of North America’s most spectacular alpine drives. While the drive can technically be completed in about two hours, plan for a full day to explore the numerous viewpoints, hiking trails, and wildlife-watching opportunities.

The road dramatically climbs to Logan Pass at 6,646 feet, passing through almost every type of terrain in the park, from glacial lakes and cedar forests to alpine tundra. Highlights include stops at Lake McDonald, the weeping wall where waterfalls cascade onto the road, and the Jackson Glacier Overlook.

Depending on snowfall, the road is typically only fully open from late June/early July to late September/early October. Wildlife sightings are common, including mountain goats, bighorn sheep, and occasionally bears. Early morning or late evening drives offer the best lighting and fewer crowds, though parking at popular spots like Logan Pass fills quickly during peak season.

Be aware of the need for timed reservations to travel on Going-to-the-Sun Road during peak times from late May to September.

30. Transfăgărășan Highway, Romania

No words can quite capture the majestic beauty of this 115-kilometer-long route through the Carpathian Mountain range of Romania. Starting in Sibiu and ending in Bascov village, north of the capital Bucharest, this postcard-perfect drive spells road-trippers delight.

Aside from the picturesque alpine scenery, what drivers love most about the Transfăgărășan are the hundreds of hairpin turns and sudden ascents and descents.

Now, before you go grabbing the Kwells, there are plenty of pullover stops such as the Poenari Citadel, Vidraru Lake, and Bâlea Lake to break up your journey – with a tunnel that connects the northern and southern halves of the route at it’s the highest point, more than 2000 meters above sea level.

You need to time it right to drive the Transfăgărășan, though. Icy conditions in the winter make the road unpassable, so you can generally only use the entire length of the road from late May through until October. In the peak of summer, forget your Top Gear dreams; you’ll be going at a crawling pace around most of the bends!

Pack your picnic as you need at least a complete day to undertake the drive, or stay overnight at the Ice Hotel!

We recommend families add to their scenic drive with a stop at the Algonquin Art Centre or the Logging Museum to delve into the park’s cultural history.

For a unique perspective, rent a canoe and paddle on Lake Opeongo, where the reflected foliage creates a mirror image of autumn splendor. The visitor centre near the East Gate is an excellent starting point, offering real-time updates on fall color progression and wildlife sightings.

The Laurentians, Quebec

The Laurentians region north of Montreal offers one of Quebec’s most spectacular fall drives. The winding roads through rolling hills and past crystal-clear lakes become a journey through a painter’s palette in autumn. Start your trip on the Chemin des Merveilles, a designated scenic route that takes you through charming villages like Val-David and Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts, each offering unique views of the fall landscape.

For breathtaking panoramas, take the gondola ride to the summit of Mont Tremblant. The 360-degree view of endless forests dressed in fall colors is unforgettable. Distance from Calgary to Vancouver – How Long Do I Need to Drive?

How Far Is Calgary From Vancouver?

The distance from Calgary to Vancouver is 1,057 kilometers (660 miles), taking the fastest route.

The drive from Calgary to Vancouver without stops takes 12 hours and 15 minutes. Most of the way, you will take Trans-Canada Highway 1 to Kamploops, then Highway 99. You will want to take 2-3 days to really enjoy the stops along the way, although we’d recommend longer to explore the incredible national and provincial parks more thoroughly.

An alternate route would be to head from Calgary towards Vancouver on Highway 22 (aka The Cowboy Trail) until you reach Lundbreck. From there, take Highway 3 through Fernie and Cranbrook, continuing on Highway 3 until you reach Hope, British Columbia.

From Hope, you will take Trans Canada Highway 1 towards Vancouver. This route takes 14 hours and is 1,226 kilometers (760 miles). It passes through Abbotsford, Surrey, Cranbrook, and Fernie, which are also fabulous stops in the Rocckies.  

For the purpose of this guide, we will focus on stops to make on the shorter northern route. 

Best Time Of Year To Drive From Vancouver To Calgary

In the summer, the highways are well-maintained. However, the drive can be slow as you hit congestion and maintenance work on the main roads that can only take place during the warmer months of summer.

If you have a choice in timing, early September, once the schools have returned, can be a much quieter time of year to enjoy this journey.

Although the mountains can look beautiful in winter, the weather between Calgary and Vancouver can be unpredictable and treacherous. If you are attempting this drive in the winter, snow tires are recommended (and often a legal requirement). 

It is best to check Alberta and British Columbia road conditions for up-to-date changes.

What Sort of Vehicle Do I Need To Cross the Rockies?

All of the places we have recommended on this Calgary to Vancouver itinerary are accessible in a normal 2WD sedan vehicle or SUV. If you are heading further off-the-beaten path, you’ll want to consider a 4WD.

We’d recommend booking your rental car early if you are flying in to commence your journey from Calgary in the summer as options for family-sized vehicles especially do book out. We have used and recommend Discover Cars to explore your rental options in Canada.

It’s possible to make this journey as a one-way hire in either direction; hire cars can be taken across provinces without issue (you’ll be crossing from Alberta to British Columbia).

From our experience, we’d expect you to pay approximately a $100 CAD fee for the one-way drop-off (if your car hire quote is coming back in the $000s, choose another company!).

13 Best Stops On A Calgary To Vancouver Road Trip

Depending on the length of the journey, you can include every major town/point of interest or pick out some highlights or overnight stopping points only.

So many places between Calgary and Vancouver are worth visiting and enjoying. We’ve included 13 different locations so you and your family can pick and choose stops based on your interests.

Most people choose to road trip in the Summer, so we will focus on summer activities. However, most locations offer a sensational range of winter activities as well, making it one of the most magical places to visit in Canada in winter.

Kananaskis

Explore “Alberta’s Mountain Playground” in Kananaskis Country, located between Banff National Park and Calgary. Kananaskis Country is home to some of the most beautiful areas in Alberta and outdoor activities, and the bonus is that it is not as busy with tourists as the other national parks we’ll mention in this guide. 

In Kananaskis, you will find four wildland provincial parks and five provincial parks just waiting to be explored. If you are looking to explore the rugged terrain, we highly recommend the Grassi Lakes trail, which is located in the wildlife corridor and where you will see the aquamarine lakes similar to the popular Lake Moraine.

Grassi Lakes has two trails: an easier path that showcases a dense forest and rock faces with hidden pictographs, while the more difficult route will take you to a steep section to view a waterfall and the town of Canmore in the distance. The easier route is about 5 km and is definitely family-friendly for most fitness levels.

The next choice is to visit Peter Lougheed Park, which is known for having two beautiful, clean lakes: Upper and Lower Kananaskis. These lakes were natural lakes but have been expanded for hydroelectric projects. This is the perfect location to stop for a picnic lunch and take in the scenery. The lakes also offer the opportunity for kayaking, canoeing, and paddle boarding.

If you are interested in seeing wildlife, then you should consider the day-use trails, where you may spot wildlife such as bears, coyotes, elk, and mountain goats. If you like adventure, then you may want to check out the High Rockies Trail from the Black Prince.

Pro Tip: You will need to purchase a day pass to explore the parks. However, they can be purchased online for only $15. If you prefer buying in person, they are available at multiple visitor centers in Kananaskis Country.

Canmore

Stop in for a quick visit or check in for the evening and take a stroll down 8th Street, a pedestrian-only area with boutique shops, cafes, and restaurants. It is a gorgeous area for a stroll, as you can see the Rocky Mountains in the distance. Every Thursday in the summer, the Farmer’s Market is located on 8th Street.

Policeman’s Creek Boardwalk is the perfect area to stop with kids as it is an accessible walkway from the downtown area. At the entrance of the trail, you will find the Big Head Sculpture, which is a unique sculpture to see.  The 4km walk will take you through the forest and along the water for an easy scenic walk.

Pro Tip: Accommodation is much more affordable in Canmore than Banff; we recommend making this your first overnight stop before heading into the national park.

Banff

Visiting Banff is about taking in beautiful landscapes and exploring nature. Banff National Park is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream as there are so many beautiful landscapes to look at, but don’t worry, the kids will entertain themselves with nature along the trails. 

Lake Louise

Enjoy the picturesque views of Lake Louise as you canoe and take great family photos with a mountain backdrop. Canoeing is a fun activity you can do as a family and make memories in this beautiful setting. You can rent the canoe from the Lake Louise boathouse. 

Bow Valley Parkway

The Bow Valley Parkway takes about an hour to drive and connects Lake Louise and Banff. As you drive through this section, lookout for the following; you may choose to stop at some of the lookout points.

Yoho National Park

High in the mountains of Yoho, you will find Burgess Shale fossils which are some of the oldest pieces of evidence of life on earth. Join a guided hike where you can choose to visit one of three different locations: Mount Stephen, Walcott Quarry, and Stanley Glacier (all have varying hiking distances).

The fossils are located high in the mountains pressed into the rock bed showing evidence of marine ecosystems from over 5 million years ago. This is a must-do Canadian Rockies Experience.

Parks Canada has placed over 200 red Adirondack chairs across Canada in unique treasured natural locations, and 2 sets of these chairs can be found while strolling through Yoho National Park. The chairs in Yoho National Park are located at Takakkaw Falls, and Yoho Lake, so sit and enjoy the quiet and peacefulness of the view.

Golden

Golden, British Columbia, is a great center point from some of Canada’s most beautiful scenery found in the following national parks: Yoho, Glacier, Kootenay, Jasper, Banff, and Mount Revelstoke. This is a great place to stop overnight, and then plan to visit one of these spectacular parks to enjoy hiking, waterfalls, lake views, and rich historical landmarks.

Golden, BC is a wilderness lover’s paradise as there is lots of hiking, water sports, fishing, white water rafting, and so much more to explore. Families will want to visit the Golden Golf Club Mini Golf Course, and the Golden Sky Bridge, located feet above the canyon with amazing views. 

Glacier National Park

This is a beautiful National Park to simply enjoy the 360-degree view of alpine scenery and is open year-round.

If you are looking for a quick stretch break, then we suggest the Rockgarden Trail, which takes about 20 minutes to complete and will give you a quick view of the natural beauty of this park as you view the Selkirk Mountains.

Make sure you stop at the Memory Garden and Summit Monument to learn more about the rich history of the park and its involvement in Canada’s first trans-continental railway and highway.

Glacier National Park also offers a full day of exploring. In the summertime, there is a small concession stand that you can buy lunch from and eat at a nearby picnic table. Make sure you save room as Scoopz Ice Cream shop is located just across the street and has many ice cream treats to choose from.

Another family-friendly stop is at BC Wildlife Park, which is home to over 65 species of animals and 200 animals, including grizzly bears, cougars, wolves, and birds of prey. These animals are all animals that have been saved from the wild as they could no longer survive in the wild on their own.

The park runs a fun train around the park on weekends that the kids will enjoy. This wildlife park is the perfect excursion as it is not very big, so the whole park can be visited in 2-3 hours making it a great spot to stop and stretch your legs.

We’d suggest making this another overnight stop as there are several activities in the area and a decent range of accommodation options for different budgets. Sandman Signature Kamloops puts you in a good location on the waterfront and offers family rooms.

Bridal Veil Falls

This is one of the quicker stops you can make along the route, however, you don’t want to miss viewing this beautiful cascading waterfall that is over 60 meters tall. The water flows over the smooth rock face and creates a veil effect, thus giving the park the name Bridal Veil Falls. 

You will want to complete both walking trails to create a loop from the parking lot to the waterfall. Follow the path and then cross over the wooden bridge to get the best viewpoint of the falls.

The trail is uphill but not too steep. It takes you through the forest along the riverbank until you reach the falls. You can take the Woodland trail back to the parking lot or take the junction to the left to stop at a great picnic spot for lunch.

Crazy Creek Hot Pools

Experience the benefits of geothermal hot pools that are nestled in the woods among the mountain views. Relax in one of four pools at Crazy Creek Hot Pools, all ranging at varying temperatures from 40°C to 12°C (104°F to 54°F).

• Be aware of the size of the tank you are driving and fill up when you can as sometimes gas stations can become far and few in between.

Best Time to Visit Toronto

The best time to visit Toronto depends on what activities you’d like to do and things you’d like to see. Eastern Canada’s weather tends to operate at extremes, meaning that the winter month are very cold and harsh while the summer months are very hot.

Autumn and springtime in Toronto are milder and may be more comfortable for younger kids, but there’s plenty to do year-round in Toronto.

June through August is the peak travel time in Toronto. The city has plenty of annual summertime things to do, including outdoor movies, foodie festivals, pedestrian Sundays at the market, the Chinatown festival, and more. 

Once autumn hits, the beautiful fall foliage takes over the city, and it’s a visually beautiful time of year. Come November, the lead-up to the holidays begins with light festivals and Christmas markets, and there may even be some early snow!

Getting Into the City of Toronto

Assuming you are arriving by air, Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) is located about 40 kilometres (25 miles) from the downtown area. There are several public transportation options for getting into the city without a car.

The fastest option is the UP Express, a direct rail link from the airport to Union Square that takes less than half an hour. Ticket kiosks can be found at the airport (adult fare is $12). There’s free Wi-Fi and lots of baggage space, so it’s a smooth and relaxing ride into town.

If you’re headed somewhere other than downtown, you can get off at either of the two stops along the route which connect to bus services or the TTC Subway, but keep in mind that those services are a separate fare.

The cheapest option would be bus transit. This costs only $3.25 for the full route, but you’ll need to transfer at Kipling Station and switch to the TTC or another bus. Ask the driver about this when boarding and they’ll sell you the ticket for the full journey.

If you’re prepared to pay around $75-100, Uber or taxis are the easiest journey since you don’t need to worry about missing your stop! It may also be the least stressful option if your kids are young and you’re worried about corralling the family onto public transit.

How to Get Around in Toronto 

Although Toronto is pretty big, you probably won’t need a car if you’re planning on staying in the downtown area. Traffic can be unpredictable—especially on the weekends – and it will be cheaper to get around on foot or via public transit.

Riding the TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) – that includes the subway system, streetcar lines and bus routes – adults pay $3.35 per ride, youths (13-19 years) are $2.40 and your under 12’s are free to ride making it a great option for families to get around in Toronto.

If you think you’ll be hoping on and off public transit several times in one day, get a PRESTO day pass.

The TTC Subway also connects some of the outer municipalities with the rest of the city. Lines 1, 2, and 3 are the ones that are most closely connected to downtown Toronto.

There are also buses, and a streetcar network that spans the entire downtown area, so public transportation is a great way to get around. Plus, it will be more cost-effective than a rental car, Uber, or taxi.

In nice weather, Toronto is a great city for exploring by foot, especially if you follow the harbourfront. 

Where to Stay in Toronto

Toronto is Canada’s largest city and covers a lot more than just the downtown area. The GTA (Greater Toronto Area) includes a lot of boroughs and large municipalities, with Toronto proper located in the middle, bordering Lake Ontario. This is where most of the city’s most exciting attractions will be.

Some of the best neighbourhoods include the Entertainment District (which has many of the city’s most iconic sights like the CN Tower and Ripley’s Aquarium).

The Old Town is great for specialty markets and the popular Museum of Illusions, or Cabbagetown and Corktown, both historic neighbourhoods home to heritage buildings, museums, and even an indoor botanical garden. 

And pretty much no matter where you are, there are lots of cafés, restaurants, and unique shops at every turn!

If you are staying overnight, there are tons of hotels downtown. A few of the most popular ones catering to families include:

• The Chelsea Hotel is just a few blocks from Yonge-Dundas Square (aka “Times Square of Toronto.”)They have an indoor pool with a slide, a game room, and even family-specific rooms with toys.
• InterContinental Toronto Centre, located across the street from the CN Tower. They do a family getaway package that includes a suite, an in-room movie night setup (complete with snacks), and even a tent in the living room!
• For budget options, you can’t go wrong with the Holiday Inn in the Downtown Centre. This hotel is very central, has a pool, and kids under 11 eat free when accompanied by an adult ordering from their restaurant.

The Best Areas of Toronto for Family Dining

Being the largest city in Canada, the sheer amount of options you have when it comes to food is seemingly limitless. There’s something for everybody, regardless of what kind of food or dining experience you’re hoping for. 

One thing to keep in mind is that despite the huge selection of restaurants to choose from and the fact that Toronto is a relatively kid-friendly city, a surprising amount of restaurants don’t actually have a kid’s menu. But, there are lots of great places that do cater to families. Some of the best family-friendly spots include:

Steamwhistle Biergarten: a brewery, but with a kid’s menu that even has plant-based options
Sportsnet Grill: a classic sports bar, but it has a kid’s menu and looks into Roger’s Centre where the Blue Jays play — great for kids who love baseball!
The Rec Room: there are technically two restaurants inside, The Shed and Three10. Aside from the kid’s menu, this location has arcade games, a bowling alley, and even a swimming pool. 
Dairy Cream: a Toronto classic and a local favourite! Serving classic soft serve with a variety of flavoured dips, it’s a great summer treat spot.

Things to Do During a Day in Toronto By District

If you’ve only got one day to explore the city, seeing the iconic sights is the best way to get the most out of it. If you have the extra time, try to add in a few hidden gems, too — Toronto has plenty!

Entertainment District / Old Toronto

• The CN Tower is a must-see. Though it’s long been dethroned as the world’s tallest building, it still clings on as #10 on that list, and the view from the observation deck are pretty incredible.
• It’s also well-known for its Edgewalk Experience, where you can walk on the edge of the tower over a glass floor (this is an expensive sight at $195 per person, but it’s definitely one of the coolest things you can do in the city!). If that’s not your thing or you’re not keen on heights, there’s also a great revolving restaurant inside where you can sit and enjoy a meal with a view.
• Rogers Centre is the home of the Toronto Blue Jays (the only Canadian team in Major League Baseball) and the largest stadium in the city. It’s just down the street from the CN Tower so it’s easy to do both before moving to a different area. It’s a great experience to catch a game here if you have the time! 
• The Hockey Hall of Fame is another great option for sport-loving kids. Home of the famous Stanley Cup and with lots of interactive experiences, it’s great for both kids and adults, especially if you’re an NHL fan!
• Ripley’s Aquarium is another family favourite, and it’s very kid-friendly. It’s got plenty of exhibits that kids will love, like the tunnelled conveyor belt where sharks swim overhead and the colour-changing jellyfish exhibit.

You won’t fit all of these into one morning but we’d set your one day Toronto itinerary to experience at least one to these top attractions.

The Distillery District

The Distillery District is a cool neighbourhood made up of brick heritage buildings that once housed a huge whiskey distillery. Today, it’s full of cobbled streets and heritage buildings, distilleries, restaurants, and shops.

This is considered a great spot for foodies so would make an excellent place to time your lunch stop. You can also find foodie walking tours around here. Some places to check out here that would interest the kids:

• SOMA Chocolatemaker for homemade sweet treats. They even make their own chocolate from scratch!
• Cluny Bistro & Boulangerie for French-inspired dishes in a very chic setting
• Madrina Bar Y Tapas for Mexican and Spanish dishes, and they have a kid’s menu
• The St. Lawrence Market is about halfway between the Entertainment District and The Distillery District, but it’s worth a stop! Divided into two main market areas, South and North, it’s home to dozens of vendors selling fresh produce, artisanal meats and cheeses, homemade baking, and even gifts. There are also regular flea and craft markets.

Yorkville and North Toronto

Yorkville and North Toronto have a few gems of their own worth the journey. This isn’t too far from the downtown core, so you can do a loop of Toronto and hit these up before heading back down towards the harbourfront later in the afternoon.

• The Royal Ontario Museum (the ROM) is worth a visit if your kids are interested in natural and cultural history! There are exhibits on dinosaurs, Ice Age animals, and birds — and even a bat cave exhibit (Allow 1-2 hours here).
• Casa Loma would be an easy sell to any kids once you tell them it’s a real castle. Comprising three floors and a sprawling garden estate that includes preserved horse stables, even adults will love this historic landmark. The inside includes a turn-of-the-century library, private chambers, a huge great hall, and even a conservatory. There’s also a rifle museum on the top floor. (All a further 1-2 hours)

Even just wandering through these areas will reveal endless things to do, whether it be cafés, boutiques to peruse, or quaint streets to explore.

How to Plan One Day in Toronto With Kids

If you’re looking for ideas on how to structure the day, consider starting in the Entertainment District to try and beat the midday crowds, then move east towards Corktown/the Distillery District before heading towards Yorkville. 

If you didn’t already capture the views from CN Tower in the morning, sunset can make an excellent (though busy!) time to visit. Alternatively, grabbing tickets to a Blue Jays Baseball game would be the ideal end to your day in Toronto!

Easy Quebec Road Trips To try

1. Eastern Townships

• Distance from Quebec City ~  214 km via Route Transcanadienne O/A 20 O

The Eastern townships of Quebec, known as “Les Cantons-de-l’Est,” offer natural landscapes, outdoor activities, and cultural attractions in the scenic countryside surrounded by vineyards and charming small towns. This region is known for having lots of summer festivals, farmers’ markets and local cuisine to enjoy Quebec’s agricultural produce and flavours. 

Bromont is a great stop in all seasons, as in the summer, you can explore hiking trails or visit the waterpark. In the winter, they are a popular choice for snowboarding, skiing and winter recreational activities.

If you are looking for relaxation, the Magog is the place to visit, as it has multiple lakeside parks that are perfect for picnics along the shoreline of Lake Memphremagog. The small town also has art galleries and boutiques to window shops. 

Knowlton is another charming small town with tree-lined streets and historic buildings that offer the perfect destination to get out of the car for a stroll. They are known for their antique shops and scenic views of Brome Lake.

Sherbrooke is the largest city in the Eastern townships and has a vibrant cultural scene. Stroll along Wellington Street, the main commercial street, and discover its boutique shops, cafes, and restaurants.  Check out some unique Canadian art pieces when you visit the Sherbrooke Museum of Fine Arts or attend a performance at the Granada Theatre, which is an architectural gem. 

If you enjoy wine sampling, then the Eastern Townships is the perfect location for you to enjoy a scenic drive to enjoy the countryside along Route 243, Route 141, or Route 212, stopping at local wineries for tours and tastings. Some must-visit vineyards include Domaine Les Brome, Clos Saragnat, and Domaine de Lavoie.

Mont-Mégantic National Park is a great spot to enjoy hiking, biking, water sports and golfing. If you visit the area, you will want to check out the Estriade bike path, which is a flat route on a converted railway track that connects Granby to Waterloo. On the route, you’ll encounter beautiful landscapes, including rolling hills, open fields, and tree-lined sections, as well as rest stops with picnic tables.

2. Ile d’Orleans

Enjoy the French island of Île d’Orléans, which has a rich history dating back to the 17th century, as you enjoy the beauty of the island countryside. Île d’Orléans is an island located in the St. Lawrence River, which is an agricultural gem of Quebec.

The soil on the island is excellent for growing produce, so as you bike along the country roads, be sure to stop by the strawberry fields, apple orchards, and produce stands to taste the delicious produce. There are also many excellent vineyards, such as Vignoble Isle de Bacchus, Cidrerie Verger Bilodeau, or Domaine de la Source à Marguerite, that are great spots to spend an afternoon and enjoy a wine tour.

Sainte-Pétronille is a great spot to go for a stroll. The island has multiple lookouts, such as Parc Maritime de Saint-Laurent, and observation viewpoints like Chemin Royal to view the river, bridges and Quebec City across the river.

If you enjoy shopping at small local boutiques, for handmade crafts and speciality food products then be sure to stop by Les Fromages de l’Isle d’Orléans, Chocolaterie de l’Île d’Orléans, or La Confiturerie Tigidou for delicious treats and souvenirs.

3. Fjord Route: Saguenay Fjord National Park

If you are departing from Quebec City, some places you may want to stop at Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré to see the historic basilica. Baie-Saint-Paul has many art galleries and boutiques to visit, and lastly, Tadoussac has stunning views of the St.Lawrence River and is a popular location to stop and try and see whales or other marine life on a boat tour.

If you are departing from Montreal, you may want to stop in the charming old town of Trois-Rivières, which has quaint cafes, local shops and historic sites to explore. Saint-Félicien is another great stop if you want to check out Canadian wildlife like bears, wolves and caribou at the  Zoo Sauvage de Saint-Félicien.

Saguenay Fjord National Park has a landscape of steep cliffs, deep blue waters, and lush forests, creating a natural paradise. It is a great destination for outdoor enthusiasts and those seeking a peaceful retreat in a natural setting. This national park is unique as it is located along the Saguenay Fjord, which has been carved over thousands of years by glaciers. The Saguenay Fjord extends 100 km (62 miles) inland from St. Lawrence and is quite the sight to see!  The fjord is one of the largest in the world, and the park helps protect a range of ecosystems: forests, cliffs and marine habitats while offering a great location for outdoor activities.

Visitors will enjoy the multiple vantage points throughout the park of the Fjords while they enjoy hiking. If you want to see marine wildlife up close then you can rent a canoe or kayak to explore the calm waters of this fjord. If you enjoy learning more about flora, fauna and geological history then stop by the interpretive center.

4. Route des Navigateurs (Navigator’s Route)

This scenic Navigator’s route is located along the shoreline of the St.Lawrence River. This route has been shaped by centuries of navigation in the river that has created unique coastal towns that are unique to visit. The entire route is 492 km. 

Starting from Montreal, you will want to head to Parc écomaritime de l’Anse-du-Port – Passerelles de Nicolet and explore the network of wooden boardwalks that are perfect for wildlife spotting. Nearby you will want to stop at the Sainte-Angele quay and check out the observation tower for breathtaking views of the St.Lawrence shoreline.

Kamouraska is a cute little village with charming architecture that offers a walking tour to visit historical sites such as the Miller Quay, Morel and Leblanc avenues and their historic buildings and the Paradis mill. During your visit, be sure to check out the riverfront promenade boutiques that offer unique souvenirs.

Get a different view of St. Lawrence from the water as you embark on a whale-watching tour starting from Rivière-du-Loup quay with Croisières AML. Also located nearby is Parc des Chutes which is home to a beautiful waterfall, hiking trails, a lookout and serene green space to enjoy!

5. La Malbaie

La Malbaie is a hidden gem located in the Charlevoix region of Quebec, offering outdoor adventures, cultural experiences, or culinary delights. La Malbaie is a luxury destination located along the St.Lawrence River, surrounded by mountains and rolling hills.

This scenic resort village is an icon of luxury as it is home to the chateau-style Casino de Charlevoix if you want to take a chance on your luck, and the luxury five-star Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu. The hotel also features a golf course, and a spa, providing visitors with a wide range of activities and luxury amenities.

Foodies will love the gastronomy scene in Malbaie as it serves regional cuisine such as Charlevoix cheese, game meats, and fresh seafood in fine dining restaurants. Nature lovers will enjoy visiting the  Parc National des Hautes-Gorges-de-la-Rivière-Malbaie, which has a landscape of steep cliffs and deep valleys perfect for hiking, camping and wildlife viewing.

Lastly, the area has a rich cultural history that you can learn more about at the Musée de Charlevoix, which teaches about the art and history of the area. Stroll through town to view the historic architectural treasures, such as the 19th-century church called Église Sainte-Agnès.

6. St.Gabriel de Valcartier

• Distance from Montreal ~ 271 km via A20

When starting out from Montreal, you will drive through the Laurentian Mountains and enjoy views of forests, lakes, and small towns like St.Jerome. This small town offers a great spot to enjoy outdoor activities at Parc régional de la Rivière-du-Nord or enjoy the art gallery of Musee d’art contemporain.

Your next stop is Mont-Tremblant, which is a popular ski hill in the winter, and in the summer, you can enjoy a variety of hiking trails, golfing, kayaking, biking, or take the gondola to the peak to enjoy the scenic views. Mont-Tremblant also has a small charming village that has unique shops and restaurants, so be sure to stop for a famous Quebec Dessert called the Beaver Tail (a fried pastry with toppings or cinnamon sugar) or find delicious poutine (another Canadian staple). 

Once you arrive at St.Gabriel de Valcartier, families will enjoy snow tubing and ice skating in the winter, and only a short drive away is the unique Hotel de Glace which is a hotel made of ice that you can either stay overnight or make a quick visit and enjoy a frosty drink and enjoy a Canadian favourite of frozen maple taffy.

7. Jacques Cartier National Park

Tourists will enjoy the scenic road trip through villages and countryside alongside the St.Lawrence River along the New France Route that links Old Quebec City and Cote de Beaupre. This historic route was used by inhabitants to move goods from Beaupre to Quebec City, so along the route you can visit many historic sites such as a windmill, Domaine de Maizerets, ancestral buildings in Bourg du Fargy.

Along the route, make sure you stop to visit Montmorency Falls which are a spectacular sight in summer and winter, towering at 83m tall. You can take a cable car to the top of the cliff or walk across the suspension bridge, and adventurers can even take a zipline across the plunge pool.

Once you reach Jacques Cartier National Park, which is known for its beautiful landscape and outdoor activities, the Gardins-Jardins area of the park offers hiking trails and a magnificent Lac des Cygnes or the pristine Jacques Cartier River, where you can canoe, kayak, paddleboard and fish.

The Valley area has steep cliffs and impressive fjord-like landscapes that are perfect for viewing Canadian wildlife like moose, beavers and even bears. In the winter, the park is popular for cross-country skiers, snowshoe trekkers and sledders.

Before we dive into the best stops, you’ll want to keep these road trip pointers in mind:

• Start Early in the Morning – Start your route early in the morning to avoid traffic in Toronto, and start the journey with a plan but remember to be flexible as you may drive by something that interests you that wasn’t on the plan.
• Avoid Traffic – If you want to avoid traffic, then consider paying to take the HWY 407 toll road, which can save you hours of traffic depending on the time of the day and is billed later as they track your license plate.  You won’t miss any Ontario attractions using this shortcut. Highway 407 avoids the worst traffic between Toronto and Whitby.
• Plan your stops – In Ontario, we are lucky to have countless ON Route Roadside plazas that have restrooms, shops, and restaurants all in one location, making it easy to take a quick break.

Toronto Vs Montreal

The distance from Toronto to Montreal is 542 km (approx. 337 miles). The Toronto to Montreal drive time is approximately 6 hours to drive if you are going to drive straight from one location to the next.

Most of the route from Toronto to Montreal is on Highway 401, which can be busy with traffic, so you will want to avoid driving during rush hour if possible. You can complete this trip in a single day, but stopping to take 2-3 days will allow you to explore all the attractions along the route.

Best Time of Year to Drive from Toronto to Montreal 

The best time of year to drive to Montreal depends on what you are interested in seeing and experiencing in Montreal, as it offers amazing attractions in both Summer and Winter that are completely different.

Spring (April to June): The weather can be mild and pleasant, but it can also be rainy so it all depends on the day. In the spring, you will see blossoming trees and flowers along the route, and attractions have fewer crowds.

Summer (July to August): The weather will be warm to hot depending on the day, but the roads will be dry, which is perfect for driving. This is the most popular season to visit, so expect larger crowds at events and attractions. 

Fall (September to October): The weather will be cooler and along the roadside will be beautiful foliage to view especially near Thousand Islands and Eastern Ontario. There will be fewer crowds however some attractions may be closed.

Winter (November to March): This can be a difficult time to drive as there are often bad snow storms along this route during the winter months, making it unideal to travel, so be sure to check weather conditions before leaving. Montreal has great skiing, snowboarding and winter sports in the winter months. 

Attractions to Explore Between Toronto and Montreal

Port Hope

This quaint small town is a delightful destination to pit stop and check out the blend of history, natural beauty, and cultural experiences. 

To start your visit, head to Downtown Port Hope, where you can stroll through the historic town center that dates back to the 19th century. You will find unique shops, art galleries, and restaurants among these historic buildings and heritage homes.

You can even join a guided heritage tour to learn more about the town’s history and why these landmarks are important. If you have extra time, plan ahead and grab tickets to a show at the historic Capitol Theatre that shows films, musicals, concerts and plays.

If you enjoy the outdoors, then head to the Ganaraska River, where you can stroll along the river and enjoy the peaceful environment while spotting wildlife. Located in the  Ganaraska forest to enjoy some hiking, biking or fishing that offers experiences for all skill levels.

If you are visiting in the fall, head to the Corbett Dam near Mckibbon St to check out the unique sighting of the Port Hope Salmon run as the salmon work their way up the ladder. It’s very cool to observe this natural phenomenon up close.

Big Apple

The Big Apple is seen from afar as you approach it driving along Highway 401 as this large red apple is an Ontario icon. You can order products such as caramel apple pie ahead of time on their website.

The Big Apple is a great place to stop and enjoy lunch from the Smokehouse or just to buy some snacks for the road trip, such as donuts, chocolate and much more. There is also a small gift shop with souvenirs. 

Visitors will enjoy the serene country setting, and you can check out the petting zoo, mini golf, and apple cider brewery, or you can climb 35 feet to the top observation deck of the giant apple for a spectacular view of Cramahe Township, the Village of Colborne and Lake Ontario.

Prince Edward County

This picturesque region is made up of a variety of small towns located on the peninsula that juts out into Lake Ontario and is known as an agricultural gem for its thriving wine industry, fresh produce, and farm-to-table culinary scene.

Prince Edward County has many sandy beaches and sand dunes, including Sandbanks Provincial Park, which is the perfect place to spend some time sunbathing or swimming. If visitors have more time then they may also enjoy hiking, cycling or birdwatching in the multiple conservation areas located nearby.

Producing some of Ontario’s best wine, Prince Edward County has over 40 different wineries and vineyards to explore and enjoy wine samplings and culinary delights.

Kingston

Kingston is an important Canadian city as it was once the Capital City of Canada. It is a great stop to stay overnight or can be a quick 2-3 hour stop.

Brockville

Brockville sits on the Northern edge of the Thousand Islands and has a great waterfront area to watch the boats while enjoying a picnic in one of the lush green spaces if you have more time, head to the marina to sign up for a boat rental, 1000 island boat tour or fishing charter to explore the St. Lawrence River from the water.

Long Sault Parkway

Outdoor adventurists will love the scenic parkway that stretches across eleven islands in the St. Lawrence River between Ingleside and Cornwall offering stunning views of the river and natural landscape.
