1. Sedona

3. Monument Valley

Another fabulous landmark of Arizona perfect for road trippers, this red sand desert region is nestled between Utah and Arizona. Known for its towering sandstone buttes, you will feel like you’ve been dropped straight into the film set of a Western movie.

The 17-mile Valley Drive is one of the country’s most famous scenic drives (paid access). Part of Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park (Olijato-Monument Valley), there’s no rock climbing or hiking off-road without a guide. However, you are invited to admire the towering sandstone masterpieces from afar with a self-guided tour of 11 spectacular vantage points.

4. Antelope Canyon

Antelope Canyon is the most photographed slot canyon in the American Southwest, and it’s easy to see how it gained that title as soon as you step foot in it.

As one of the most iconic hikes in Arizona, no trip to the state would be complete without braving this gorgeous trail. Created by floods that crashed onto sandstone cracks in the area, Antelope Canyon is such an impressive sight because of the exquisite swirl of desert hues on its walls formed as a result.

Antelope Canyon is protected by Navajo Parks and Recreation, and only authorized tour companies can take visitors to the canyon. Children are allowed on Upper Antelope Canyon tours, but be aware of the bumpy journey. No strollers or backpack carriers are allowed. Lower Antelope Canyon is undeniably more strenuous and recommended for experienced hikers.

5.  The Wave

Sitting right on the spot where Utah and Arizona meet, The Wave is one of the most unique hiking trails in the entire world. With a rainbow of shimmering rusty hues coloring the rocks, the landscape looks, well, exactly like a wave of desert colors!

It is a photographer’s dream, though the 6.4-mile round-trip hike in the Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness is not for the fainthearted. Due to the area’s high temperatures, it can get pretty challenging, so make sure you come prepared for the feat. We’d only recommend it for families if your kids are experienced hikers.

6. White Pocket

If you didn’t manage to get a ticket to hike The Wave, White Pocket is a wonderful alternative thanks to its similar terrain. Featuring Navajo sandstone that ranges from bright orange, pink, and red hues as well as whacky-looking rock formations, this place provides a landscape that will have you wondering if you were somehow teleported into the heart of Mars!

Surprisingly, White Pocket remains pretty off-the-beaten-path, making it a great spot to see if you want to explore one of Arizona’s best secret gems.

7. Havasupai Falls

Set on sacred Native lands, the Havasupai Falls are utterly spectacular, and no trip to Arizona is complete without visiting this gem of a place.

Set on the Havasu Canyon, Havasupai consists of five separate waterfalls: Mooney Falls, Beaver Falls, Havasu Falls, New Navajo Falls, and Fifty Foot Falls, each one equally stunning as the last. When visiting, remember that the Havasupai Tribe guards the grounds, so it’s imperative to remain respectful of their land and, if possible, take time ahead of your visit to learn about their culture. Campground reservations are essential.

8. Petrified Forest National Park

225 million years ago, tree logs were brought into the area by the heavy floods that took place during that time. Not too long after, a ton of volcanoes began erupting in the area, and the trees were buried under silica-rich ash. As time passed, water crystallized the ash, transforming it into quartz and making the logs look colorful and sparkly!

Millions of years passed, and the logs were exposed again, making the landscape in the Painted Desert section of Petrified Forest look like an insane rainbow of colors (hence the name).

If you want to explore this natural wonder, you can drive the park’s scenic road. However, hiking trails are also available if you’d like to examine the logs closely. Seriously, hiking in the Painted Desert is guaranteed to make you feel like you’re walking in a different galaxy!

3. Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada

Distance from Las Vegas: 46 miles ~ via I-15 (50 minutes)

Taking you into a wonderland of red rock Aztec sandstone, ancient petroglyphs, petrified logs, and scenery that comes in all shades of oranges, reds, and pinks, a visit to Valley of Fire State Park will make you feel as though you’ve been transported right into the heart of Mars.

Joshua Tree is humongous, which means you likely need a few days to be able to fully explore it. If you’re willing to start the day early, though, you can definitely cover a ton of ground in order to experience its main highlights in just a day.

9. Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah

Distance from Las Vegas: 260 miles ~ via I-15 (4 hours)

Bryce Canyon is located four hours away from Las Vegas, which may sound like a bit of a stretch for a day trip. Still, if you’re willing to wake up early, a day trip from Vegas is very much doable thanks to the park’s tiny size!

Striking red rock hoodoos are the main thing to see at Bryce Canyon, and there’s no better way to cover as much ground as possible than by hiking the Queen’s Garden to Navajo Loop Trail. This hike will give you the chance to swerve your way through sheer rock tunnels, pine forests contrasted by red rocks, and finally, gawking at the views of the sandstone hoodoos that make Bryce Canyon the incredibly unique place it is!

If you’d rather explore from the comfort of your car, you can also drive the park’s scenic highway (Highway 12) to Rainbow Viewpoint and then make your way back slowly. This road cuts right through the park and offers visitors 13 different viewpoints of its main highlights!

Distance from Las Vegas: 276 miles ~ via I-15 & US-89 (4 hours 30 minutes)

Millions of years ago, harsh floods rushed into cracks of sandstone in the desert and Antelope Canyon was formed.

Even though the entire Southwest is made up of fascinating slot canyons, what makes Antelope Canyon so unique is the fact that its walls are plastered by swirls of desert colors that pop to life when light hits them.

The only way to explore the canyon is by hiking through it. You will be taken from the car parking entrance to the canyon entrance by four-wheel drive. Upper Antelope Canyon is a pretty easy trail that can take around two hours, considering you’ll be making multiple stops to take in the striking scenery!

If you have time, you can also check out the much lesser-visited adjoining Lower Antelope Canyon. This canyon is just as gorgeous, but it’s made up for much thinner passages, which makes hiking through it a bit tougher for those who are after a challenge!

Top Tip: You can only enter with an authorized Navajo guide. Tours can book out weeks in advance, so you need to be organized & traveling with small children check they have enough infant seats that day.

Entrance Fees for Antelope Canyon: This depends on the type of tour you’ve booked but expect to pay $50-$90 per adult, children discounted. The tour should include your $8 Navajo permit fee.

Planning a trip to the Centennial State? Perhaps you live here and want to get to know your backyard a little better. Regardless of the reason, putting together a Colorado bucket list is a pretty difficult feat because, well, there’s just too much beauty around!  

Some adventures tower high above the crowds, though, and while we advise anyone to create their own list based on their interests, these experiences are absolute non-negotiables when it comes to traveling Colorado, especially if you’re keen to start exploring the more popular sites. 

The Ultimate Colorado Bucket List 

1. Find Yourself in a Fairytale at Hanging Lake in Glenwood Canyon 

Hidden deep inside the walls of Glenwood Canyon, Hanging Lake is a place where you’ll get to feel as though you’re inside a fairytale. Due to its unique geological formation, beautiful vegetation covering the walls, and teal-shaded water cascading from the cliffs, a visit to this stunning lake will have you wondering if fairies aren’t about to pop out from under the rocks. 

2. See Three of the Most Gorgeous Alpine Lakes in the World (plus a secret fourth one) 

Probably one of Colorado’s most famous hikes, the Emerald Lake trail in Rocky Mountain National Park is an absolute must on your Colorado bucket list. Even though the trail is relatively short and easy, what makes this hike so famous is the fact that it follows three picturesque alpine lakes backdropped by the most idyllic mountain scenery. 

Tip: There’s a fourth lake further into Rocky Mountain in case you’re feeling keen to see even more alpine goodness in a more secluded setting. To get to Lake Hayaiha, you’ll need to hike an extra mile (plus another on the way back), but the views are worth every step of the way. 

3. Go in Search of Fall Foliage on the Trail Ridge Road 

Regarded as one of the most gorgeous drives in the United States, the Trail Ridge Road stretches from Estes Park to Rocky Mountain National Park and into Grand Lake.  

The Trail Ridge Road is as scenic as it gets at any time of the year, but capturing the fall colours of Colorado at its best makes it one of the most epic US driving experiences. (The road closes by the end of October, though, and won’t reopen until May!)

The road will take you above tree line all the way to over 12,000 feet above sea level, providing some of the most striking views of the Rockies down below, undoubtedly one of the most beautiful scenic drives in Colorado. 

Although the road is only 48 miles long, it will take you at least two to three hours to complete as you appreciate the stunning raw beauty of the Rockies.

4. Spend Christmas in Vail 

Vail is one of the country’s most sought-after Christmas destinations for all the right reasons.  

For one, this cozy alpine town is world-renowned for its world-class skiing ops, and while you can enjoy the nature around it any time of the year, Christmas makes the town feel especially enchanting. 

Aside from the charming buildings that will make you feel as though you’re exploring a village in the Austrian Alps, Vail is king when it comes to unwrapping the festive cheer. Think twinkling lights adorning every corner, Christmas Markets you can roam for hours on end, and a calendar filled with activities and festivals that will make you wish you could stay just a little longer. 

5. Hike Ice Lake Trail 

Think dreamy alpine lakes that look straight out of a painting and mountain scenery so good your jaw will drop right to the ground, all with a backdrop of snow-capped peaks keeping you company every step of the way. The Ice Lake Trail is touted as one of the most stunning hikes in Colorado, and once you’re there, you’ll see exactly why that is.  

Hiking Ice Lake isn’t exactly considered a walk in the park, but with so many views to gawk at along the way, you’ll have reasons galore to stop and catch your breath for a while.  

6. Conquer a Colorado Fourteener 

In case you’re new to mountaineering language, a fourteener is a name given to mountains that are over 14,000 feet high!  

Colorado, home to 58 fourteeners, offers a wide array of options for beautiful mountain views.

An even better way to see these peaks, though? From high up above! Summiting a fourteener in Colorado is definitely an experience that belongs on every outdoor lover’s bucket list. 

No Colorado 14er is easy to conquer, but some are considered lighter than others. If you’re not a super experienced hiker, Mt. Bierstadt, Mt. Sherman, Huron Peak, and Handiest Peak are all wonderful options to test your skills.

If you want to try a harder challenge, Capitol Peak or Maroon Peak are both guaranteed a true trial. 

7. See a Sea of Sand Dunes at Great Sand Dunes National Park 

Even though the first thing that comes to mind when we think of Colorado is the mountains, this gem of a state is home to a wide array of landscapes. In fact, it’s home to the tallest sand dunes in North America, with the highest one, Star Dune, towering at 755 feet. 

Another magical fact about this park? It’s listed as a Sky Dark Territory, meaning there is no light pollution anywhere nearby and making it a prime spot for stargazing (you may even get to see the Milky Way on a clear night!) 

8. Witness Nature’s Masterpiece at Garden of the Gods, Colorado Springs

Step into a geological wonderland at Garden of the Gods, where vibrant red rock formations pierce the sky against the backdrop of majestic Pikes Peak. This free public park is a testament to the artistic power of nature, featuring towering sandstone spires, balancing rocks, and unique formations shaped over millions of years.

The Most Incredible National Parks Road Trip in America

Breathtaking hikes, expansive landscapes of red-rock formations, and unbeatable adventures in the desert are just a few of the aspects that make a road trip through Utah the insanely magical experience that it is and one of the best American road trips for nature-lovers.

If you’re currently in the planning stages of your road trip to Utah, chances are one of the things you’re most excited to do is to visit all its national parks. Luckily, they’re not too spread apart, so you can easily see them all in a short amount of time!

Starting in Salt Lake City and ending in the alluring Needles district in Canyonlands National Park, this southern Utah road trip itinerary will have you checking out some of the biggest highlights Utah has to offer in terms of nature and grandiose scenery, all in just a week!

Utah Mighty Five Road Trip Map & Itinerary

Day 1: Drive to Zion National Park

• Driving Distance: 308 miles

From Salt Lake City, start making your way to Zion National Park, the first stop on your Utah Mighty Five road trip.

Zion offers many contrasts in scenery, ranging from white and red-toned cliffs, peculiar-looking rock formations, hanging gardens, and verdant meadows.

Aside from its beautiful landscape, Zion also boasts Native American history that dates back to prehistoric times. To understand the land, you’ll be walking a little better; the first thing you need to do is check out the Zion Human History Museum, where you’ll get to learn all about the Pauite people who once inhabited the area.

If you arrived early enough, you may also have a bit of time to spare to hike a few of the short trails of Zion.

A few recommended ones include Canyon Overlook Trail, Riverside Walk, The Emerald Pool Trail, and the Watchman Trail. 

Where Should I Stay visiting Zion National Park?

Staying inside the park, then Zion National Park Lodge is your best option. Nearby, Springdale hotels and motels make for an affordable option, or for a luxury experience, try glamping at Zion Wildflower!

Day 2: Zion National Park

• Driving Distance: 75 miles

Day two will be all about going on in and braving the world-famous Angel’s Landing trail. This is a pretty challenging hike that can take around four hours to complete and will have you see some of the best landscapes the park has to offer. At the end of the hike, you’ll be standing a whopping 1500 feet above the canyon!

As a note, take into account that Angel’s Landing is pretty strenuous and not recommended if you have a fear of heights (or tiresome little legs!). Moreover, you’ll also need to secure a permit to hike the trail in advance.

If Angel’s Landing doesn’t sound right for you, there are plenty of other amazing hikes in Zion you can do instead, or opt to take a scenic drive around the park. You can easily fill two days at Zion even without the more strenuous hikes.

Do be aware a shuttle bus is required throughout most of the year to get you from the Zion National Park visitor center and into the depths of the park. If you’re not early risers, do expect queues by mid morning.

Where Should I Stay Visiting Bryce Canyon National Park?

Campers will find two established campgrounds within Bryce Canyon National Park, or Bryce Canyon Lodge is the only other accommodation inside the park. Nearby the town of Bryce Canyon is not far from the park’s entrance, try Best Western PLUS Bryce Canyon Grand Hotel.

Day 3: Bryce Canyon

• Start and end your day in Bryce Canyon

Home to the largest collection of hoodoos in the world, Bryce Canyon’s unique landscape is guaranteed to please even the fuzziest of travelers.

The ultimate way to see as much of Bryce Canyon on foot is by hiking the Queen’s Garden to Navajo Loop trail. Throughout the hike, you’ll be weaving your way through limestone walls, hiking through tunnels, and even crossing a pine forest before getting to the main viewpoint in the park, which offers 360-degree views of the largest amphitheater of hoodoos!

After hiking, you can check out the rest of the park by driving over Highway 12, a road that provides access to some of the best lookout points of Bryce Canyon.

When sunset arrives, put your hiking shoes back on and make your way to Sunset Point, a splendid place to watch the sun go down over glowing red rock hoodoos!

Bryce Canyon sits at a higher elevation than the other Utah National Parks so gets much colder in winter! Gorgeous for those snow fall photos but be prepared with lots of layers.

Stay: As per night 3, stay in the park or nearby at Bryce Canyon

Alternatively, if you wont an early start on Day 4, you can stay overnight close to Capitol Reef, try the Capitol Reef Resort in the nearby town of Torrey, or Cathedral Valley Inn, Caineville with basic accommodation. Campers, you can try pre-booking Fruita Campground inside Capitol Reef National Park.

Day 4: Capitol Reef

• Driving Distance: 114 miles + 137 miles to Moab

Today, you’ll start the day by driving two hours to Capitol Reef National Park, the most underrated park on the itinerary.

Even though it’s not as popular as the other “Mighty 5”, Capitol Reef offers landscapes like no other. You’ll find three distinct areas to explore: the Waterpocket Fold, the historic Fruita district, and Cathedral Valley. 

The park is located on the Waterpocket Fold, a gigantic “wrinkle” on the earth’s surface that created a landscape as dramatic as it can get. Here, you’ll be gawking the entire time as you pass views of enormous cliffs, rugged canyons, natural bridges, and so much more.

Grab a quick lunch and hike to Hickman Bridge, a pretty short trail that will get you to see some of the most iconic views in the park.

Next, grab your car keys and drive the 8-mile scenic road to get access to some of the best viewpoints in the park (this is the only part of the park you’ll be charged an entry fee). Even though the drive is pretty short, there’s a ton to see on the way, so plan at least a few hours to complete the drive without rushing your way through.

After completing the park’s main scenic drive, you can continue toward Highway 24. This road will take you to a petroglyph panel created by the indigenous people who lived in the park’s area thousands of years ago.

After admiring the panels, continue the adventure by driving to Moab, the gateway to Arches and Canyonlands national parks!

If you want less time in Moab for hiking, you can extend your trip between Capitol Reef and Moab with a stop in the fascinating and surreal Goblin Valley State Park.

Where Should I Stay Visiting Moab?

We’ll be pulling up here for the next few nights as we complete the second half of this incredible road trip. Basing yourself in Moab, you are about 10-15 minutes from Arches National Park and 40 minutes from Canyonlands – Island in the Sky Visitor Center.

Day 5: Arches National Park

• Driving Distance: 10 miles

Arches National Park is exactly what it sounds like: A sea of natural arches (it has over 2000 of them!).

Despite the huge amount of arches and rock formations, it’s home to, Arches national park is actually pretty small, which means you can easily see the highlights in just a day.

Very Important Note: From April 2022 the park introduced a new timed entry system to cope with crowds. It will be ESSENTIAL from April to October to pre-book your entry to Arches National Park.  

To start the adventure, rise early and drive to Arches from Moab to hike to Delicate Arch. This is one of Utah’s most emblematic landmarks (so much it’s actually depicted on its license place), and sunrises here are an absolute treat, especially when the sun’s rays pass right through the arch.

Next, drive down the Arches Scenic Ride, which will have you making several stops at some of the best viewpoints in the park to get a pretty good introduction to the landscapes it offers.

After driving, you can choose from a few of the many short hiking trails on offer. We recommend starting out with the Landscape Arch hike. It takes just under an hour and will get you to see the longest natural arch in the country! Other note-worthy hikes to consider are The Windows, Double Arch, Sand Dune Arch, and Skyline Arch.

Where Should I Stay Visiting Arches National Park?

Note that, because there is no lodging at Arches, you will need to drive back to Moab or camp at the Devils Garden Campground (you need to make advanced reservations).

Moab is located just 15 minutes away from Arches, so you’ll have plenty of options if you don’t manage to snag a spot at the campsite, or why not try this glamping experience?

Day 6: Canyonlands National Park

• Driving Distance: 32 miles to the entrance + 34 mile scenic drive

While Arches National Park is all about arches and rocks, Canyonlands is a bit different as it is home to expansive canyons, enormous rock formations, and spires.

Canyonlands National Park is absolutely huge (over 330,000 acres!), and seeing everything in just a day is impossible.

To make things less overwhelming, day six of your Mighty Five road trip will be all about settling into the park by exploring Island in the Sky, the most popular district in the park where the most iconic highlights are found.

• To put the size of Canyonlands in perspective, it’s about a 2-hour drive between Island in the Sky and The Needles. The Maze is even more remote again, and only accessible by 4WD. Whilst the best hikes for families are in Island of the Sky, you will want a full final day to tackle the Needles as well, we wouldn’t attempt both in one day.

Start the day by hiking the Mesa Arch Trail for sunrise (yes, you’ll need to start hiking in the dark!). Once you get there, though, the views are absolutely worth the early wake-up call. 

After hiking, you can drive the 16-mile scenic drive up to Upheaval Dome. From there, start driving back slowly and make stops at the many viewpoints scattered all over, where you’ll be able to see some of the most beautiful views of Island in the Sky.

After completing the drive, you can choose from the many hiking trails on offer. The hikes at Island in the Sky are pretty short and not very strenuous, so you’ll have enough time to tackle plenty of them.

A few must-do hikes, which most families should be capable of completing, include the White Rim Overlook Trail (0.9 miles), Murphy Point (3.6 miles), and Aztec Butte (1.6 miles).

Where Should I Stay Visiting Canyonlands National Park?

Same as night 4 in Moab, or if you’re looking for a change, why not try this glamping experience?

Day 7: Canyonlands National Park

We can’t think of a better way to finish a road trip through Utah than exploring the Needles District in Canyonlands.

Even though Island in the Sky is simply fantastic, the Needles offers a much more rugged landscape, quieter trails, and hikes that are considered a bit more challenging. This day is really for your more experienced hikers!

As you make your way to The Needles, make sure you make a quick stop at Newspaper Rock, where you’ll be able to see prehistoric petroglyphs. It’s right outside the park.

From here on, get prepared to do a ton of hiking as we’ll go all in by hiking the Druid Arch to Chesler Loop Trail. While not extremely challenging, this hike is 11.2 miles long, so you’ll need to plan all day for it. 

Throughout the hike, you’ll get the chance to see two of the best landmarks in The Needles District. Druid Arch is a beautiful arch with two narrow openings that offer amazing views of the entire area around it.

Chesler Park, on the other hand, is an open area that features a large collection of sandstone spires that look as though they’re piercing the sky!

Day 7 Alternatives + Additions!

If you’re not huge hikers – or with extra time – a Day 7 alternative close to Moab is Dead Horse Point State Park.

Some of the most simply breathtaking viewpoints in Utah – in fact, in the country! – can be found here. Watch the Colorado River snaking its way through the vast red canyons from the Dead Horse Point Overlook.

If little legs can muster some more enthusiasm, there are several more hikes within the park, though even just a walk to the viewing point for sunset would be the most spectacular way to end your Utah Mighty 5 road trip.

Although the Mighty 5 in Utah have undoubtedly earned their reputation, don’t dismiss the Utah state parks, too. Often less crowded but just as awe-inspiringly beautiful. A state parks passes are $10-$20 valid for 2 days or annual passes $100.

Variations to our Utah Mighty 5 One Week Road Trip Itinerary

As you can see Day 7 here is quite strenuous, we would not recommend this for families with young children and inexperienced hikers.

As an alternate with younger children, we suggest you take a little longer on your way from Salt Lake City to Zion as there are plenty of incredible national monuments and state parks that can be added to the Mighty 5 (with less walking).

We would suggest instead:

Alternatively, if you’re heading onward to Arizona, skip the second day in Canyonlands and keep driving onwards to Monument Valley for some serious desert magic!

A Longer South West National Parks Road Trip

Another alternative itinerary, particularly if your plan is to continue onward to Arizona and Nevada, is to tackle all of the above in reverse. We would start the Mighty 5 driving from Salt Lake City to Moab, or Denver to Moab then finish the Utah portion of your journey in Zion. Try this version instead:

Best Time For A Utah Mighty 5 Road Trip

Utah’s desert environment means the summers can be sweltering hot, whilst the winters can be cold – even attracting snow! Whilst this can be a photographer’s dream, for most, the peaks of summer and winter aren’t ideal.

Despite the often oppressive heat, summer remains the busiest time for visitors; expect queues, crowds, full parking lots, and sky-high accommodation costs.

However, Spring and fall bring ample opportunities to go and explore – we love early May. The closer to summer you get, you’ll need to think carefully about the amount of hiking you can do.

October is a real sweet spot for mild weather and low crowds, with the added element of fall colors.

For the most part, though, the Mighty 5 in Utah can be visited year-round with some planning.

Mighty 5 in Utah National Parks Cost

Aside from fuel and accommodation for your national parks road trip in Utah, you need to factor in national park fees.

You will find it’s very much worth investing in getting your family an America the Beautiful annual pass, which will cover you not just for the Mighty 5 but entrance fees at national forests, wildlife refuges, and more. It’s only $80 and valid for 12 months.

If you are just visiting Moab – Arches & Canyonlands, a Southeast Utah Parks Annual Pass is $55.

Check if your family may be eligible for the 4th Grader Pass – Every Kid Outdoors pass; there’s no better time to explore the natural beauty of the country.

And don’t forget peak season reservations for Arches National Park! Bookings open three months in advance. Like many of the country’s most popular national parks, it’s likely these summer reservation systems are here to stay.

More Tips for Road Tripping in Utah & The Southwest

Moab is one of those places that is always fun to visit. With a few national parks nearby, fun outdoor history hikes, and in-town entertainment there are plenty of fun things to do in Moab with kids.

While Moab only has a population of just over 5,000 people, it draws in nearly 2 million visitors a year. Moab has intense mountain biking and extreme Jeep-ing (is that a word?), but I’m going to stick to some of the lesser adrenaline-infused activities for family activities in Moab, Utah.

From checking out dinosaur tracks to hiking through national parks, here are the best things to do in Moab for families to ensure your trip is incredibly fun.

Best Time to Go To Moab

If you’re going for great weather: March, April, and May will give you decent temperatures. Same as September, October, and November. The summer months can get hot quickly and reach into the 100’s. While the winter months are colder, it still stays in the 40’s or above on average.

If you are going to avoid crowds: As Moab is very popular for their Jeep trails, it can get very crowded during events around the year. Two big events include the Easter Jeep Safari (around the week of Easter, of course) and the Jeep Jamboree, which happens in late October. Moab can get very crowded during these events and hotels will be harder to find (and more expensive.)

If avoiding crowds is your number 1 goal, consider grabbing a coat and gloves and heading to Moab anytime from November to February.

Where to Stay in Moab

There are plenty of places to stay in Moab, but be aware that they fill up quickly as busy season approaches. Try and book your accommodations early to make sure you have a nice selection.

We recently stayed at Comfort Suites in Moab. The location was on the main street Highway 191, and just a couple blocks from shops and restaurants. We were able to book one room for all 6 of us (including a pull-out sofa) and it included breakfast.

After making a long drive from Denver to Moab, it was nice to have a place where we could all be together in one place and have breakfast provided.

The coolest-looking hotel is the Fairfield Inn & Suites. It’s really close to the entrance of Arches National Park (a short drive away from downtown Moab) and it looks amazing. The kids and adults will all love multiple pools and hot tubs, plus a gorgeous splash area beautifully hardscaped.

If you are bringing an RV, you can book Sun Outdoors, previously named the Moab Valley RV Resort and Campground. There are cool amenities like a pool, tetherball, a playground, life-size chess game and more.

Even if you don’t have an RV, you can book little cabins at Sun Outdoors.

Fun Things to do in Moab with Kids

With even just 2 full days in Moab, you can pack a lot in. If you have longer, there’s plenty more you can do. Here were a few of the best things to do in Moab with kids.

1. Arches National Park

Visiting Arches is one of the best family activities in Moab, Utah. The park is incredible, even just driving around. Pack a lunch to bring in the park and enjoy the entire day exploring.

You can spend 1 entire day driving and hiking in Arches National Park. Arches is perfect when you are traveling with kids to Moab because, while there are some longer hikes, there are so many arches you can do that are just short hikes away.

Spend your morning seeing the arches at the bottom-most loop (The Windows, Garden of Eden) and then enjoy a packed lunch at Panorama Point. Use the rest of the day to discover the arches north of here.

A kid’s favorite is Sand Dune arch, where you hike through canyon walls in the sand!

• Beware of seasonal timed entry requirements for Arches National Park from April through October.

2. Check out Fossils and Dinosaur Tracks in Moab at Mill Canyon

To get to the Mill Canyon Dinosaur Sites: go north of Moab 15 miles on highway 191. Turn left at the sign for Mill Canyon and continue on for 2 miles. Here you’ll have access to the tracksite. Continue on for access to the Fossil Trail.

The Tracksite is one of the largest tracksites from the early Cretaceous period in North America. It is home to over 200 tracks!

The Mill Canyon Dinosaur (Fossil) Trail will give you great views of Determination Towers, sandstone structures in the distance that are remnants from the Jurassic Age.

It will also, of course, exhibit many dinosaur fossils that are still embedded in the rock on the trail. The trail has signs along the way to help you spot the bones and explain what you’re looking at.

It’s fun when the kids start finding the fossils on their own.

This Fossil Trail is fairly easy for little legs, but it is not stroller-friendly.

3. Discover More Dinosaurs at Moab Giants

To Get to Moab Giants: About 11 miles north of Moab off highway 191

Moab Giants is a great things to do in Moab with kids. It offers both an indoor and outdoor experience to get up close with prehistoric creatures.

The 1/2 mile trail outside shows you the full-size giants in a desert setting. Indoors, you’ll find a 5D theater experience with sea turtles, a Megalodon, and other sea creatures.

Check online if you’d like to purchase tickets the Moab Giants before hand.

• Top tip: Hours/Days vary differ depending on the time of year, so make sure to check ahead.

4. Check out Potash Road Dinosaur Tracks and Petroglyphs

To get to Potash Road Dino Tracks and Petroglyphs from downtown Moab: head north on highway 191 and turn left on 279 South. Stay on 279 about 6 miles and pull into the Poison Spider trail parking lot.

• Bonus: you’ll probably see lots of rock climbers as you drive through the canyon to get here. It’s really cool to watch people scaling the straight steep mountain wall right along the road.
• This is probably the hardest trail I’m including in this post, but it’s doable for kids and there were plenty of kids there when we went.
• To see both the Dinosaur Tracks and Petroglyphs, you’ll need to ascend a rocky, sometimes steep mountainside. You can see the top from the parking lot, it’s just a matter of getting up there.
• Pro Tip: watch for the green footprints and follow those for the easiest route up. The sign says to go right for the tracks, but the footprints take you up toward the top, too. Follow them as far as you need, and then split off to get to the top. We noticed them on the way down and it led us down an easier path.
• This trail in NOT stroller-friendly. Not even a little bit. I also wouldn’t take a toddler. Our youngest was 5 and did just fine. I wouldn’t take much younger than that unless they are ok with a little rock scrambling.

Once you make the somewhat-tricky climb up to the top, the first thing you’ll probably see are the dinosaur tracks in a large, flat, slab of rock. This was first discovered in the 1960’s. That’s a little later than many other tracks in the area. Why?

Well, the rock slab was actually higher up and part of the mountain for millions of years until one day it fell off, exposing the tracks that were embedded in it.

Continue hiking beyond to the top where a flat wall runs across the whole mountainside and you are sure to find many petroglyphs. Make sure to walk all the way down and around (take extra caution with the kids as you near the end of the mountain).

5. Pick a Prize at the Moab Rock Shop

To get to the Moab Rock Shop: It’s located right off the main road in Moab, slightly north of downtown.

This is a fun little stop in Moab for the kids full of sparkly and colorful gems.

The Rock Shop has been around since the 60’s and is family run. Lin (grandpa of the guy we spoke to) had made a few discoveries of dinosaur bones and fossils. Along with huge knowledge of rocks and minerals, the Moab Rock Shop was set up to let the public come in and learn about rocks as well.

There are many sections, including native Utah rocks, a colorful assortment of gemstones, fossils, and plenty of nicely formed and polished rock decor.

Even with just a $5 limit, your kids can find something pretty awesome.

6. Take an Easy Hike at Moonflower Canyon

Some of the coolest family activities in Moab, Utah include some easy nearby hikes.

Moonflower Canyon is a really cool hike and is a great hike for kids in Moab. It felt a little bit like we were in another world when we got to the end.

Moonflower Canyon hike is under a mile, so totally dobale for kids (I would not recommend strollers).

The surface is a lot of soft sand, but is more firm/rock in other areas.

When we went, we crossed the dried up creek a few times back and forth. There seemed to be multiple trails you could follow. We hiked in on the right side and came back mostly on the opposite side of the creek.

I would say the left side (looking in from the parking lot) was a little easier.

Once you are at the end, you’ll come to a small pond with a gorgeous, rock background. It’s a dead end as you have now come to the red rock wall in front of you, and it’s a really cool feeling. You feel as if you’ve entered a great, spacious room full of color and beauty!

My kids really enjoyed this easy hike in Moab and I would strongly recommend it.

• Top Tip: there are also petroglyphs at Moonflower Canyon. They are listed as “along the rock cliff, behind the wooden fence.”

Bonus Hike:

Another great hike in Moab is Mill Creek Canyon. I would reserve this for older kids, as there are a few points where you have to walk through water (bring water shoes). The end is a cool waterfall and you’re able to cool off in the water. You may see people cliff jumping, but the city really urges people not to as there have been many injuries and rescues from this.

7. Play at One Moab’s Parks

One of the best things to do in Moab with kids is visit a local park, and Moab is not short on parks. You can find the perfect one whether you’re looking for playgrounds, disc golf, ponds with ducks, or space to run. Here are a few to choose from:

Old City Park– Old City Park is a few miles out of the downtown area. It has plenty of horseshoe set ups (BYO Horseshoes), a disc golf area, a covered (shaded) playground, a cute (fenced) pond with plenty of ducks, and even a little landscaped waterfall and small pond.

Swanny City Park– Located in downtown Moab. Swanny City Park has a few fun playgrounds, rec center, skate park, cool scenery, and plenty of Moab events are held here.

Rotary Park– This cool park in Moab features lots of musical instruments to play on. It also has volleyball, basketball, and a playground.

8. Enjoy the Evening at Moab’s Backyard Theater

To get to Moab’s Backyard Theater: Take Main Street to 100 S and turn west.

At Moab’s Backyard Theater, you’ll find a nice, casual vibe, making it the perfect way to spend an evening in Moab with the family.

Different shows are scheduled into this outdoor stage. A small but fun audience dances, watches, and cheers on performers.

Plus, there was a Mexican food truck right at the entrance. We had already eaten, but splurged on a cream-filled churro for everyone.

The Backyard Theater is free, but they do provide a jar for donations.

9. Everyone Picks Dinner at the Food Truck Park in Moab

At the southwest corner of Main St and 100 N, you’ll find the Moab Food Truck Park. This is the perfect option of where to eat in Moab for families because there are so many options that each person can pick from.

This was actually the only time we ate out our entire trip, as I pack most of our food to help save money.

The food truck Park has a variety of cuisine, like Mexican, Chinese, Paninis, Hot Dogs, and many more.

It also has a covered area filled with tables, making it a convenient place for everyone to choose their dish and then all sit down together.

10. Explore Town and Search for Street Murals

Walking downtown in Moab is pretty fun. You’ll pass plenty of places to stop in and eat, bakeries, ice cream, entertainment, and shops.

Plus, there are so many murals in Moab. They are beautiful, colorful, and fun to find! If you’ve got time to just spend relaxing, walk around town and see how many you can find. This makes one of the great, easy things for kids to do in Moab.

Bonus: Fill up at Matrimony Spring

While this may not take lots of time, it’s still a really cool stop.

If you’ve heard of fresh spring water in the mountain in Moab that you can drink, here it is.

Grab your reusable water bottles, then head east on highway 129. You won’t be on it long until you see a little pullover spot on the road. Park here and walk to the front part of the pullover. Look at the underside of the mountain where you’ll see water flowing out of the mountain. (There is a metal pan helping the flow so you can fill up.)

Matrimony Springs is safe to drink (I’ve done it many times over the past decade+ ). It’s a really cool feeling to be drinking fresh, clean water straight from the source.

Extra Activities in Moab for Families

• Hole ‘n the Rock– a 5,000 square-foot home made in rock! You can tour the home, visit the gift shop, and walk through the zoo.
• Take a day to go whitewater rafting. Kids 8 and up can join in on these smaller class rapids, perfect for anyone’s first time.
• Take a family-friendly Beast Tour through some of Moab’s most popular and exciting off road, slick rock experiences. It’s 2 hours geared toward families.
• Older kids will enjoy the hike to Bowtie and Corona Arch. Both are not in the National Park. It’s about 2.5 miles roundtrip and includes a small section where you have to physically climb a rope/ladder, but not too bad otherwise for the older kids! Trailhead located off highway 279

Best Things to do in Moab with Kids

While Moab is known for its extreme biking and off-roading, there are actually so many things to do in Moab Utah with kids!

Whether you are making a national parks road trip or Moab is your final destination to really spend some time in, these kid-friendly activities will keep you busy all weekend (and beyond, if needed).

Whether it’s hiking, searching for dinosaur tracks, or doing some rock collecting at the awesome rock store, there are plenty of fun things to do in Moab with kids.

One of our personal favorites includes the Giant Dipper Roller Coaster, a historic wooden roller coaster originally established in 1925!

• Pro tip: If you plan to ride any rides, it’s best to not purchase ride tickets at an ala carte cost. Rather consider purchasing a general Ride & Play pass that will give you unlimited access to all rides and attractions. 

5. Balboa Park (Free)

Balboa Park is a beautiful park located just minutes from downtown San Diego and one of the city’s best free things to do. Here you can enjoy a number of fun activities and attractions including 17 museums, gardens, and parks!

With young kids, don’t miss out on a ride at the historic Balboa Park Carousel, originally built in 1910! The carousel features 27 intricately hand-carved horses and 25 other animal species. 

In terms of the museums, some real hits with our kids have included the San Diego Natural History Museum and the San Diego Air & Space Museum.

• Top Tip: Arrive early in the day to nab a parking spot close to the attractions you want to see (otherwise you may need to got to overflow parking and catch a shuttle bus)

The Living Coast Discovery Center offers a number of animal encounters for its visitors, including an aquarium, the turtle lagoon, raptor row, and the beautiful native Pollinator Garden.

La Jolla Cove is a very small beach between sandstone cliffs at La Jolla Shores. This area is small and quaint, with beautiful views that you do not want to miss out on. The cove is also an excellent spot if your family enjoys snorkeling or scuba diving!

The beaches at Oceanside, California, are beautiful, and the Oceanside Pier has plenty of dining, attractions, and shops to enjoy for families. One of the best side trips you can take from Las Vegas is visiting the Grand Canyon; after all, it is one of the 7 natural wonders of the world, a national park, and a UNESCO World Heritage site – simply put, it is truly incredible and an unmissable experience.

But if time is limited and you are not visiting the Grand Canyon as part of a larger road trip through Arizona, you are probably asking yourself, should I visit the West Rim or the South Rim?

What’s the difference, you may ask? They are two entirely different sections of the greatest natural wonder in the United States. Both offer spectacular views of the canyon beneath, but some key differences exist.

• The south rim is located inside the Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona
• Grand Canyon West is on Hualapai Reservation in Mohave County, Arizona
• The closest entrance to Grand Canyon National Park is approximately 4 hours away from Las Vegas, whereas Grand Canyon West, you are looking a little over 2 hours away by road.

Now that you know the major difference, let’s compare the two in more detail so you can decide which might be the best experience for your family road trip.

Driving Distance To Grand Canyon From Las Vegas

The biggest factor to take into account is how much time you have available for your Grand Canyon experience.

A trip to Grand Canyon West from Las Vegas involves around 4 hours of drive time total (there and back), and with a stop of 2-3 hours at the key attractions, you can comfortably complete this journey within a half day. This will leave either your morning or afternoon free for other fun family activities in Las Vegas (we have plenty more of those ideas here!)

Top Tip: If you don’t want to be caught up with the tour bus groups, plan to be there right on opening time at the start of the day or 2 hours before sunset. The tour groups and greatest crowds are experienced in the middle of the day, and food choices out there are limited.

In contrast, Grand Canyon National Park is a 4-hour drive to the South Entrance. And then the queue to get in; frankly, if you’re not in that queue well before 9:00 am, or you’re prepared to time your entry until after 3:00 – 4:00 pm in the afternoon and drive back in the dark, it’s a MUCH taller challenge to fit in South Rim as a one day trip from Las Vegas.

Don’t get us wrong, if you’re an efficient traveler, it can be done in a day, but not comfortably (remember bathroom breaks, fuel stops, etc!), Allow at least 12 hours.

• If you’re worried about driving distance, go with Grand Canyon West

Grand Canyon Tour Or Taking Your Own Car

If you are looking to join a coach or small tour group option to the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas, you’ll undoubtedly find more options to Grand Canyon West.

Not all tours will make this clear when they advertise “day trip to the Grand Canyon”, so if it really means something to you to ‘tick off’ the national park, be conscious that this is NOT located at Grand Canyon West.

Taking a tour may cost you more per head but has the convenience of not needing to hire a car and drive; you need to way up your cost per person for a group vs. hiring a car and self-driving, plus fuel.

And, of course, tours come with the normal disclaimers; it may have bucket loads more convenience but you’ll spend many parts of your day shuffling along with a larger group to factor in and waiting on other people, having them in your pics, you know the drill!

Entrance Fee Grand Canyon South Rim Vs West Rim

When it comes to cost, there’s a hands-down winner here.

The Grand Canyon National Park incurs a $35 entry fee PER VEHICLE, valid 7 days. You can negate this if you already have an America the Beautiful pass or any other national park concessions such as Military of the 4th Grader Pass.

On the other hand, Grand Canyon West comes with a fairly hefty entry fee PER PERSON. It depends on the number of ‘experiences’ you want to enjoy, but you’ll be looking at starting prices of $49 per person, $66 per person including the famous ‘Sky Walk’.

• So, the Grand Canyon National Park is undoubtedly cheaper for a family, but weigh this up with the extra fuel cost for traveling much farther.

Moving Around Inside West Rim vs South Rim Grand Canyon

Getting around inside Grand Canyon South Rim is easier to some extent (once you’re past the entry queue) because you can drive your car to each of the key attractions (albeit in peak seasons, there are several sections where you’ll need to use shuttles as main roads are closed to vehicular traffic).

In Grand Canyon West, you must park at the visitor center and use the internal shuttle bus between the key attractions, no exceptions. The wait for shuttle buses can be excruciatingly long in the heat but there’s no other way to get around.

Queues and Crowds

Let’s face it, visiting any natural wonder as spectacular as the Grand Canyon, you are realistically going to expect queues no matter which part you choose to visit. Visiting off peak season is the only way to avoid crowds at both, but not avoid them completely; this is not a hidden gem!

The Main Grand Canyon Attractions

This list is not limitless, but here are some of the key points of interest at each:

Grand Canyon South Rim

• Walk the Trail of Time
• Hire a bike or e-Bike to explore on two wheels
• Visit the Yavapai Museum of Geology
• Attend one of the ranger-led information sessions
• Take one of the hiking trails into the canyon (heed warnings about trail difficulty and conditions before you set out with the kids)
• Drive to the scenic viewpoints, including Desert View Watchtower

Grand Canyon West

• The Skywalk Bridge at Eagle Point- a glass walkway over the canyon (not going to lie, as spectacular as it might look, our team consensus is this is remarkably underwhelming)
• Guano Point – an abandoned mine on a small peninsula marks one of the best points for 360-degree views of the Grand Canyon.
• Additional add-on activities include a zipline, hike trails, and helicopter and pontoon tours.
• You can enjoy rafting on the Colorado River with Hualapai River Runners in a separate section of the Hualapai Reservation.

• There’s no winner per se here; it’s up to you what you want from your Grand Canyon experience, you will get some epic photos at both, but a little more freedom in your exploration in the National Park.

Staying Near The Grand Canyon

If you want to turn it into an overnight trip, both Grand Canyon National Park and Grand Canyon West offer accommodation options for families; the former has more extensive facilities within the park.

Grand Canyon South Rim has multiple lodges and campsites to choose from, suiting different budgets, but you must pre-book these many months in advance. There are also several more RV parks and motel-style accommodations just outside of the south entrance in the town of Tusayan, or a little further away in Williams.

Near the West Rim, in contrast, there are two options near the entrance: an RV Park and basic cabins. A nearly 2 hour drive away is the Hualapai Lodge on Route 66.

• Hands down, if you want an overnight trip of longer, you may as well travel as far as the National Park; staying nearby works well for beating the crowds if you rise early or stay until late.

Last Minute Planners

If you don’t like to lock in your itinerary until the last minute when you know what the weather is up to and how much free time you have, West Rim might be your better choice.

We’ve found even in the peak of summer, you could still get tickets via the Grand Canyon West website the night before.

Grand Canyon National Park, like many of the most popular national parks in the US, DOES need some pre-planning. You do not need a timed permit or entry slot (as of 2023!).

Factor in that it’s not just the 4-hour drive out to the Grand Canyon but queues and parking; it’s simply put, more of a mission if you’re traveling with kids (isn’t everything!) Not quite Disney level – but pre-planning, especially in peak school break periods, is a must, particularly if you want to stay in the national park.

• Grand Canyon West is your preferred choice if you like to be spontaneous in your travel plans.

The Verdict – Which is Better Grand Canyon South vs Grand Canyon West

The Family Road Trip team has hotly debated this! We have all tried them both and taken them in as day trips from Las Vegas and separate longer road trips through Arizona and the mountain states. There is no overall winner as both have awesome and appealing factors, and it depends on your travel plans.

But, if we had to be pragmatic, as a day trip from Las Vegas, you can’t go wrong with visiting Grand Canyon West. You certainly will not be left short on wow factor (though your pocket and your patience may be left a little lighter).

If you truly want to experience the Grand Canyon, though, take a little longer and thoroughly experience the park on foot with more signage and insights into history, the South Rim is likely going to be your better choice.

A drive from Phoenix to San Diego will bring you through the rugged desert landscape of the southwest United States, as well as through numerous parks and unique historic destinations. 

If you’re wondering where to stop or what to do on a Phoenix to San Diego road trip, then you’ve come to the right place.

In this guide, we’ll go through the logistics of the drive as well as some of the top attractions along the way. Depending on how much time you have, it would be easy to turn a drive from Phoenix to San Diego into a weeklong adventure!

Distance from Phoenix to San Diego

The most direct route from Phoenix to San Diego is on the I-8, which is roughly 355 miles. You can also take the slightly longer I-10 route, which brings you closer to the Mexican border, in which case the distance from Phoenix to San Diego is about 440 miles.

How Long is the Drive from Phoenix to San Diego?

If you take the I-8 route driving from Phoenix to San Diego, the entire trip can be done in about 5 hours and 30 minutes if you don’t stop. Even though this is doable in a day, in order to enjoy the trip and make the most of the stops, it would be better to plan for at least 2-3 days of driving.

On the I-10 route, the drive is about 6 hours and 30 minutes without stops. Again, it would be well worth your time to split this drive into at least a few days, if not more, if you’re hoping to stop in Joshua Tree or Palm Springs on your Phoenix to San Diego road trip. 

Best Time of Year to Drive from Phoenix to San Diego

Spring and fall are the best times of year to make a Phoenix to San Diego drive. These are the seasons when you can both avoid the crowds of summer and holiday tourists and enjoy the best weather. 

Summers in Arizona and southern California are very hot, so although driving from Phoenix to San Diego in June or July is doable, you’ll definitely want to make sure you have good AC in your car. If you’re hoping to go hiking, the sweltering summer heat might ruin your plans. 

Winter weather tends to be rainier than other months, which can also make outdoor activities difficult to enjoy. Remember that no matter what time of year you decide to make a Phoenix to San Diego road trip, both cities are very popular places to visit, so it’s best to make reservations for accommodation and other activities well in advance.

Painted Rock Petroglyph Site

As you leave Phoenix and head west on I-8, after about 90 miles, you’ll come to the Painted Rock Petroglyph Site and Campground.

This incredible archeological site contains nearly 500 boulders with prehistoric petroglyphs on their surfaces. It’s estimated that these drawings are at least 1,400 years old, and they provide a unique perspective into the early civilizations in the United States. 

The site is a perfect spot to get out and walk around on one of the hiking trails after the first leg of your journey as you drive from Phoenix to San Diego. If you’re inclined to spend more time, there is an overnight campsite with picnic areas, grills, and campfire pits.

Dateland

You might have already guessed from the name, but Dateland is the United States’ top producer of dates! 

What began as a small town built along westbound railways, Dateland has turned into a popular tourist attraction thanks to the picturesque date palms and gardens.

Stop to grab lunch at the local café or food court in the travel center as you drive to San Diego from Phoenix. The gift shop sells a variety of date-inspired souvenirs, and at the bakery, you can select from an array of delicious treats featuring dates. 

To beat the heat of hot Arizona afternoons, check out the Ice Cream Corner, which sells one-of-a-kind date ice cream and date shakes. Although “date” certainly isn’t a typical ice cream flavoring, many travelers have been blown away by how delicious the combination is! 

Overall, Dateland makes for an interesting place to stop while driving to San Diego for a unique experience outside of a typical road trip adventure.

Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park

One of the most fascinating stops on a drive from Phoenix to San Diego, the Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park, has an eerie and haunted quality to it. Operating for 33 years and housing over 3,000 inmates during this time, the original iron cells and bars of this prison have been maintained and restored in a historic park.

In the museum, you can learn about some of the famous inmates, such as stagecoach robber Pearl Hart known as the “Bandit Queen.” If you want to take the dare, you can even visit what’s referred to as the “Dark Cell,” which is the solitary confinement chamber that was the harshest form of punishment in prison. 

Despite its grim history, the museum has done a good job in becoming a family-friendly destination where kids can enjoy interactive exhibits to learn about the westward migration in the United States, which led to the formation of the prison.

Imperial Sand Dunes

The other-worldly quality of the expanse of sand dunes in southern California makes this section of the drive to San Diego from Phoenix one of the most scenic parts of the trip. 

For over 40 miles, these towering sand dunes will be visible along the sides of the highway. Some of the dunes reach over 300 feet!

It’s already impressive enough just to drive through California’s largest mass of sand dunes, but the area also has great opportunities for adventure. For a small recreational fee, you can hike in the dunes or operate an ATV to cruise over the windswept terrain. 

For a more peaceful alternative, you can visit the section of the dunes known as the North Algodones Dunes Wilderness, where vehicles are prohibited. Here you can hike or take part in a horseback riding tour through the dunes. 

Keep in mind that facilities like bathrooms and water aren’t very accessible here. If you plan on stopping to visit this incredible natural wonder while driving to San Diego, make sure you pack plenty of water, sunscreen, and other necessities.

Kofa National Wildlife Refuge

The Kofa National Wildlife Refuge is accessible on either the I-10 or the I-8 route, although if you’re taking I-10 on your drive to San Diego from Phoenix, it’s a bit more of a direct shot. 

This stunning wilderness area was established to protect Arizona’s population of desert bighorn sheep. Although it’s not guaranteed that you’ll spot one of these animals, make sure you keep your eyes peeled since these native Arizona sheep often make an appearance!

The rugged desert landscape and stunning rock formations make the Kofa National Wildlife Refuge a popular stop for photographers, nature lovers, and stargazers since the area has some of the best views of the night sky in the entire state.

Thanks to the large deposits of quartzite found in the rocky terrain, the refuge is also popular among rock hunters in search of crystals. You can hunt for crystals yourself in the Crystal Hill Area if you follow the regulations about the number of specimens you can take. 

Plus, this wilderness area doesn’t get as much tourist traffic as some of the other natural wonders of Arizona, making it a perfect place to visit if you’re hoping to experience the wonders of the Arizona landscape without the crowds. 

Keep in mind that Kofa is much more remote than other parks in Arizona. There are no gas stations or services inside the refuge itself, so if you’re planning on driving through this scenic area on your road trip to San Diego, make sure you have a full tank of gas, snacks, and drinks for the time you’ll be there. 

Cell phone service is also spotty at best, so it’s a good idea to have maps downloaded before you arrive.

Joshua Tree National Park

The star of the show on the I-10 route driving from Phoenix to San Diego is Joshua Tree National Park. This park has one of the most diverse and unique ecosystems in the United States and should be on the bucket list for any road trip in southern California.

Named after the iconic, twisted Joshua Trees, the National Park is known for its stunning sunrises and sunsets, rugged desert landscapes, and a plethora of wildlife. 

It’s highly recommended to spend at least a night in the park to better appreciate the landscape, not to mention the spectacular night sky! The park has some of the best opportunities for stargazing in the state, thanks to the low light pollution and open landscape. 

Check out some of the top hiking spots, like the trails through the Indian Canyons, where you’ll be treated to scenes of incredible waterfalls cascading down the red-rock canyons. Ryan Mountain is another popular hiking destination that has particularly good views of the characteristic rock formations in the park.

Palm Springs

A popular home base for visiting Joshua Tree National Park, Palm Springs is a great city to include on a road trip to San Diego. It’s less than an hour from the city to the National Park, making it a perfect place to spend a night or two if you want to explore Joshua Tree.

Palm Springs also has a great variety of accommodation options, from resort hotels with huge swimming pools to quaint desert cabins for a more private getaway. There’s plenty to see and do in the city to make it worth your while to plan to stop here during your drive from Phoenix to San Diego. No visit to Palm Springs would be complete without a ride on the popular Aerial Tramway, which climbs over 5,800 feet up the mountains surrounding the city. The view is spectacular and a good way to escape the summer heat since the temperature usually drops about 30F from the bottom to the top. 

The Living Desert is another popular place to visit, which combines a botanic garden and zoo into one attraction. The scenic landscape is home to native desert plants as well as animals from around the world, like giraffes and camels. It’s also a great place for families to visit on a Phoenix to San Diego road trip, thanks to the petting zoo and interactive kids’ exhibits.

San Diego

Coming to the final destination of your Phoenix to San Diego drive, make sure you plan in advance to check out some of the top attractions in one of California’s most popular tourist destinations. 

San Diego is known for its sunny weather year-round, making it easy to enjoy outdoor activities like watching a sea lion show at SeaWorld or riding roller coasters in LEGOLAND.

Soak up the southern California sun at Mission Beach, where you can go kayaking, splash in the waves, or get an adrenaline rush on one of the Belmont Park amusement park rides.

• Driving through the desert landscape of Arizona and southern California is beautiful but can also be challenging because of the heat. Check to make sure your car’s AC is working, and always be sure to bring water and sunscreen even if you don’t plan to get out to hike.

1. Colorado Scenic Drives: Mount Evans Scenic Byway

• Distance: 50 miles (round-trip route)
• Time needed: 2-6 hours 

If you’re looking for excellent drives in Colorado for mountain scenery, then it doesn’t get much better than Mount Evans Scenic Byway. This route is famous for being North America’s highest paved road, and the views certainly won’t disappoint! 

At the highest point, the drive is 14,130 feet, where you’ll get a jaw-dropping vista of the Rocky Mountains.

This is also one of the best scenic drives near Denver since it begins just 60 miles outside the city. If you’re staying in Denver, it’s easy to turn Mount Evans Scenic Byway into a fun day-trip adventure. 

Along the way, it’s definitely recommended to make a stop at Echo Lake. There are picnic tables next to this pristine alpine lake, or if you’re interested in more outdoor activities, you can hike or fish here as well. 

When to go: This Colorado scenic byway is open year-round, but sometimes driving conditions in the winter can be challenging.

2. Colorado Scenic Drives: Top of the Rockies National Scenic Byway

• Distance: 130 miles
• Time needed: 5 hours to 1 or more days 

Not only a top drive in the state but also designated as a National Scenic Byway, this is one of the mountain roads in Colorado that will bring you on narrow switchback turns up to 12,095 feet into the Rocky Mountains. 

Two of Colorado’s “fourteeners” (peaks over 14,000 feet) can be seen from this drive-Mt. Elbert and Mt. Massive. You’ll also cross over the Continental Divide several times for some incredible views on both sides of the Rockies and of the Arkansas River. 

The section of this drive-through Independence Pass is only open seasonally, but this part is considered one of the most scenic roads in Colorado. Other parts remain open year-round, although there is always the chance of road closures in the winter on account of snow accumulation. 

It would be easy to turn this Colorado scenic byway into several days of adventure. Three national forests (Pike, San Isabel, and White River) are all crossed in the drive, each of which has opportunities for camping, horseback riding, and fishing. 

Notable cities along the way include Aspen, Leadville, Minturn, and Copper Mountain, which is one of Colorado’s top ski destinations in the winter. 

When to go: Sections are open year-round but not at Independence Pass. Always check for road conditions and closures before starting.

3. Colorado Scenic Drives: San Juan Skyway/Million Dollar Highway

• Distance: 230 miles 
• Time needed: 1-3 days 

Without a doubt, one of the most scenic roads in Colorado, the San Juan Skyway is one of the most popular road-tripping destinations in the United States! 

Looping through the San Juan Mountains, this drive will take you through Durango, parts of the Mesa Verde National Park, and the famous stretch of road called the “Million Dollar Highway” between the towns of Ouray and Silverton. No one really knows how the Million Dollar Highway got its name, but perhaps it’s simply because any of the views are worth a million dollars! 

For most of the route, the drive is a two-lane road hugging close to the sides of the mountains. You’ll definitely want to slow down around corners, but the drive is well-maintained and open year-round. 

Some of the towns, like Ouray also have interesting historic sites to visit where you can learn about early colonial settlers and mining projects in the region. 

4. Colorado Scenic Drives: Rim Rock Drive

• Distance: 23 miles
• Time needed: 1-4 hours, depending on stops 

Rim Rock Drive is the road to take if you want to visit Colorado National Monument. This preserved area close to Grand Junction is the postcard face of the Wild West and one of the most scenic roads in Colorado, thanks to its canyons, sandstone towers, and iconic red rock landscape. 

You may already be able to guess from the name the route that Rim Rock Drive will take you along the rims of the rocky canyons in the monument. Winding back and forth between the sandstone towers, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to get out to take photographs, thanks to the numerous look-out points along the way. 

The drive is short enough to be a fun afternoon excursion, or you can turn it into a day trip if you want to add on exploring one of the hiking trails along the way. 

Keep in mind that although the road is well-maintained, sections are a bit challenging on account of the sheer cliff faces and narrow turns. This is also a popular cycling and motorbike route, and wild animals such as antelope or bighorn sheep will sometimes cross the road. As such, this isn’t the best Colorado drive if you’re afraid of heights. 

When to go: The drive is open year-round, but temporary closures can happen because of rock falls or winter weather.

5. Colorado Scenic Drives: Pikes Peak Highway Scenic Drive

• Distance: 40 miles (round trip route)
• Time needed: 2-6 hours 

Pikes Peak is one of Colorado’s most famous fourteeners and stands at a towering 14,115 feet. This is also one of the best scenic drives near Colorado Springs, since the route begins just outside of the city. 

The Pikes Peak Scenic Highway takes you to the very summit of the mountain, where not only will you get views of Colorado but also into nearby states like Utah and Arizona if the day is clear! 

At the base of the drive near the outskirts of Colorado Springs, you’ll need to pay a small entrance fee at the toll house to access the drive. At busier times of the year, sometimes reservations are required, so be sure to check in advance if you want to include this Colorado scenic drive in your road trip itinerary. 

Along the way, there are several hiking trails, such as Barr Trail and the Devils Playground, which have pull-off access points where you can park. Fishing is also popular in one of the three mountain lakes you’ll pass climbing up the mountain. 

At the top of the drive, there’s a visitor center with a gift shop and restaurants where you can enjoy a well-earned meal overlooking the mountains. Keep in mind, though, that there aren’t any gas stations, so make sure you’ve got a full tank before heading out. 

6. Colorado Scenic Drives: Peak to Peak Scenic Byway

• Distance: 55 miles 
• Time needed: 3-5 hours 

The Peak to Peak scenic byway is one of the top scenic drives in Rocky Mountain National Park, and although the name suggests just two mountains, you’ll really be traveling around several notable peaks. It also happens to be the oldest designated scenic byway in Colorado! 

Perhaps the most noteworthy is the tallest mountain in Rocky Mountain National Park, Longs Peak. There are several places to stop on the drive to get some great photos of this mountain, such as the iconic St. Malo’s Chapel, also known as “The Chapel of the Rocks” in Allenspark. 

Not only will you get spectacular mountain scenery on this Colorado drive, but you’ll also pass through several fascinating historic towns. Nederland is a great place to stop to grab a bite to eat at one of the local coffee shops and stop by the Mining Museum. Families can visit the iconic Carousel of Happiness which is known for its historic hand-carved figurines. 

This scenic drive connects Central City with Estes Park, which are both great places to stop to spend the night. Along the way, there are also opportunities for hiking, visiting alpine lakes, camping, and fishing if you’re looking to add more adventure to the drive. 

When to go: Fall is considered a particularly spectacular season for this Colorado scenic byway thanks to the bright autumn foliage. The drive is open year-round, but winter can sometimes have more challenging road conditions. 

7. Colorado Scenic Drives: Flat Tops Trail Byway

• Distance: 82 miles 
• Time needed: 2-6 hours, depending on stops

Traversing the Flat Tops Wilderness, this is a great scenic drive in Colorado if you’re hoping to explore some of the lesser-traveled roads in the state. 

The drive connects the small towns of Yampa and Meeker, both of which are known for their outdoor activities, such as fishing on the Yampa River. Meeker is also famous for its annual Meeker Classic Sheep Dog Championship Trials, which usually take place in early fall. 

You’ll pass through both the Routt and White River National Forests, which are full of opportunities for hiking, camping, biking, snowmobiling, and fishing. 

Keep in mind that most of this drive is on a gravel road, which is excellent if you’re hoping to experience a more secluded and off-road feeling than you’ll have on other scenic drives in Colorado. There also aren’t any places to stop to gas up along the way, so make sure you start out with a full tank and snacks and drinks for the drive. 

When to go: Spring through fall are the easiest times of year to drive this Colorado byway, but winter also gives you a chance to check out excellent snowshoeing and snowmobiling areas.

8. Colorado Scenic Drives: Frontier Pathways Scenic and Historic Byway

• Distance: 103 miles
• Time needed: 3 hours to 1 day 

As the name of this drive might suggest, this is one of the scenic highways in Colorado that combines both the history and natural beauty of the state. Much of the road follows the original traveling routes of settlers and Native Americans who moved westward. 

The drive connects the town of Pueblo to Colorado City and passes through some natural landmarks like San Isabel National Forest and Lake Pueblo State Park. 

Along the way you’ll also pass through charming historic towns like Westcliffe and Wetmore which are known for being early mining towns with quaint downtown areas where you can find local shops and Victorian-style buildings. 

Make sure you plan for a stop at the iconic Bishop Castle, nicknamed “The Largest One-Man Construction Project in the Country.” This 160-foot-tall castle was built by Jim Bishop and is located just off Highway 165 along the drive. It’s free to visit and a great spot to get some photos of your road trip through Colorado!

If you are a fan of beautiful sights and outdoor activities, a visit to the Grand Canyon National Park is an absolute must!

The drive from San Diego to the Grand Canyon, although long, is filled with beautiful landscapes and can’t-miss sights to see. There are a couple of options as far as the route you choose to take, and depending on which you select, there are great activities and fun experiences to enjoy along the way. 

We have put together a complete guide that will provide everything you need to know about your trip from San Diego to the Grand Canyon, including the time needed for travel, route options, and an itinerary filled with fun activities and experiences that will make your trip well worth it!

How Long Will It Take To Drive From San Diego To The Grand Canyon?

The drive, if you were to have good traffic and minimal stops, would be roughly around 8.5-9 hours. Rather than making your trip a long and boring drive, we recommend taking a little extra time to enjoy the drive and make stops for fun activities and experiences along the way. 

If you break your trip up into two days, you will find you will enjoy the ride a little more. If you choose to take the more direct route (Northern via I-40) you will find yourself arriving in just under 8.5 hours, crossing through Joshua Tree National Park and the Mojave Desert. 

Comparatively, if you take the more scenic route (Southern via I-8) it will take you closer to 9.5-10 hours, and you will pass through Phoenix, Arizona. While the more direct route may be appealing, we always like to opt for the more scenic route that will provide us with additional scenery and experiences to enjoy as a family. 

If you are returning to San Diego after your adventure, you can always make the drive using one route on the way there and the other on the way back, giving you two new experiences and the opportunity to compare the two routes.

Best Time Of Year To Drive From San Diego To The Grand Canyon

Because both California and Arizona have beautiful weather nearly all year round, in our opinion, there isn’t any particular time of year that would be better than any other time weather-wise. 

However, to avoid heavy traffic and high groups of tourists at each attraction, we recommend avoiding peak times that will include large groups of families (such as summer vacation time).

Summer temperatures in Arizona can get into very high temperatures ranging from 90-100+ degrees as well, so that may be a deterrence if you are not a fan of warm temperatures.

Pro tip: While the temperatures are high and you will definitely feel the heat, California and Arizona both have very low humidity, and the dry air helps to make those high temperatures a bit more bearable.

Palm Springs & Joshua Tree National Park

Traveling the northern route will take you through the Palm Springs/Joshua Tree National Park area. The drive to Joshua Tree from San Diego is roughly 150 miles and will take you about three hours. 

Joshua Tree National Park makes for a great stopping point, putting you just under half of the way to the Grand Canyon. There are a number of excellent spots to stop and enjoy along the way as well as excellent choices for staying in the area.

Where To Stay Near Joshua Tree

Unless you are planning to camp within Joshua Tree National Park (which we highly recommend you try at some point in your lives!), then your best bet for breaking up the journey is an overnight stay in Palm Springs.

Shortly after leaving Joshua Tree, you will cross into Arizona, where you will find a number of great cities to stop and enjoy. Here are a few great stopping points along your route:

Lake Havasu City

Lake Havasu is a city in Western Arizona known for its water sports and outdoor activities. This is a great city to stop and enjoy some time outdoors, cooling off in the refreshing water. A brilliant lake vacation spot in the southwest, there are a lot of great experiences and attractions to enjoy in Lake Havasu, such as: 

• Lake Havasu State Park has sandy beaches to take in the beautiful sights and enjoy a quiet picnic lunch with your family. 

Kingman

As we mentioned previously, Kingman is a historic railroad city, so you can expect to see a lot of railroad history throughout your visit.

• Locomotive Park is another great stop to see railroad history, here they have a number of historical exhibits and trains to see. We love Locomotive Park because we get the chance to enjoy history while still being out in the beautiful weather. 

Williams

When you reach Williams, Arizona, you are in the home stretch to get to the Grand Canyon. Williams is just over an hour outside of the Grand Canyon and is considered one of the gateways to the Grand Canyon National Park. 

We find that Williams is a great last stop to round out your road trip. It makes for a great overnight stop to get some rest and start the following day, headed straight into the Grand Canyon via the Grand Canyon Railway for a unique way to experience the park. 

There are plenty of fun activities and family-friendly experiences to enjoy while you are in Williams, including the following: 

• Bearizona Wildlife Park is a drive-thru wildlife experience where guests get the opportunity to see a number of animals including wolves, bears, deer, goats, and more! The Bearizona Wildlife Park has both a drive-thru experience as well as a walk-thru experience and up-close animal encounters, including Backstage Grizzly Training and Otter feeding. We always find that a zoo/animal experience is a great family-friendly activity that we all enjoy.

Places to Stay in Williams

• Self Drive – Of course, self-driving is always an option, and if you are traveling by a standard-size vehicle, this is no problem at all. The drive will take you just over an hour, and this option provides the flexibility to stay for as short or as long as you would like and gives you full control of your visit – but be aware of the queues!

Stops Along the Southern Route – San Diego to Grand Canyon

Taking the southern route will have you traveling along the Mexico border as you make your way up through the state of Arizona, including cities such as Phoenix and Flagstaff.

Cleveland National Forest

Starting in San Diego, after just about an hour out, you will come to the Cleveland National Forest, an excellent stop to kick off your road trip. While the Forest provides beautiful accommodations because it is so early in your trip, we recommend making it a quick stop, perhaps for a couple of hours as you head toward the Grand Canyon. 

Popular activities at the Cleveland National Forest include horseback riding, hiking and biking trails and stopping in one of the numerous picnic areas for lunch.

Phoenix

Phoenix is the capital of Arizona and just under 5 hours from the Cleveland National Forest, making it the perfect stop for an overnight stay to get rested and relaxed to finish out your drive the following day.

We’d budget a couple of nights in your itinerary for Phoenix as there’s so much to see and do with kids. Some favorites include:

• The Phoenix Zoo – ranked in the top 10 zoos in the U.S.A., we highly recommend checking this out when you are in the Phoenix area. We say this every time we mention a zoo, but they are always a priority for our family because it is an activity that everyone in our family enjoys together, so we really enjoy seeing and visiting zoos that we have never been to before. 

• Papago Park is great if you are looking for some outdoor scenery and activities. Papago Park is very close to the Phoenix Zoo and as you walk some of the trails in the park, you can even catch glimpses of some of the animals at the zoo. There are plenty of trails and picnic areas throughout the park making this a great spot to enjoy quality time with your family. The views at sunset are unmatched!

• We always like to incorporate some knowledge and education into our travels and visiting places like museums and exhibits are a great way to do that. The Children’s Museum of Phoenix provides not only an educational experience for you and your little ones but fun activities as well. 

Flagstaff

Upon leaving Phoenix after about two hours you will get into Flagstaff, another city that is considered to be a gateway to the Grand Canyon, which makes it the perfect final stop on your road trip. 

Flagstaff is roughly an hour and a half from the Grand Canyon National Park so it is a great city to enjoy some local activities and then make your way to your final destination of the Grand Canyon. Here are a few activities and experiences to check out while in Flagstaff: 

• The Lowell Observatory is a science lover’s dream! At the Lowell Observatory you can see science happen right before your eyes and dive deep into the history of Space. See how telescopes have evolved over the years and get the opportunity to take part in exhibits and tours including the Lowell Tour, the Journey to Pluto Science Show, and stargazing at the Giovale Open Deck Conservatory. 

• Downtown Flagstaff is a historic town that features a number of fun things to do, sights to see, and delicious meals to enjoy at a variety of local restaurants. Take part in fun activities such as live music, local shops, and the Brewery Trail. 

• Arizona Snowbowl is a can’t miss activity if you are visiting the area in the colder months of the year. The snow season at the Arizona Snowbowl is typically from November to April with a combination of natural snowfall and man made snow. At the Arizona Snowbowl you can enjoy the mountains with fun snow activities such as skiing, snowboarding, and tubing. 

Stay in Flagstaff or Grand Canyon?

Whilst you are only an hour and a half from the South Rim entrance to the Grand Canyon at Flagstaff, we recommend to make an early start to beat the traffic; if you’re not staying in the national park itself, consider staying just outside the park in Tusayan.

Additional Tips For A Successful Road Trip From San Diego To The Grand Canyon

• California and Arizona are both states that are great for visiting throughout the entire year when it comes to weather but keep in mind that depending on the time of year and the weather conditions in the area, activities may look a little different for your trip – in both the peak of summer and winter

• Do still pack warm clothing for winter travel and be mindful some parts of the Grand Canyon South Canyon are difficult to navigate; the North Rim of the Grand Canyon is closed for winter.

• Be sure to make a note that during this road trip you will cross through multiple time zones. You will start your trip on Pacific Standard Time (PST) with your origin point being in California and as you cross into Arizona you will switch to Mountain Standard Time, pushing your clock an hour ahead so it may seem like you are losing time. In summer, there will be no time difference as Arizona does not observe Mountain Daylight Time.

• Camping spots in Joshua Tree in the winter and spring (November to May) and both lodgings and camping grounds in Grand Canyon National Parks will book up, fast! Always look to plan staying within a US national park 6-12 months in advance.
