From rugged desert landscapes to pristine alpine lakes, Nevada’s scenery has captivated many travelers, photographers, and outdoor adventurers. 

Whether you’re visiting Las Vegas and looking for good day trips or you’re on a longer cross-country road trip through Nevada, there are tons of excellent scenic byways throughout the state. 

In this guide to the best scenic drives in Nevada, we break down what makes each of these routes special and some tips for what to see and do along the way. Buckle up for a wild west trip you won’t soon forget! 

1. Nevada Scenic Drives: Red Rock Canyon Scenic Loop

• Distance: 13 miles
• Time needed: 1 hour or more if you stop 

One of the best scenic drives near Las Vegas, the Red Rock Canyon Scenic Loop offers spectacular views of the Mojave Desert that has made it one of the most famous roads in Nevada.

Located in the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, this drive may be short in distance, but there isn’t an inch of it that doesn’t have a stunning view. It’s a well-maintained one-way road and a popular drive, so be prepared to go slowly and be courteous of other travelers. 

Stop at the Visitor Center at the entrance of the loop to learn a bit more about the region’s fascinating geology. If you want to explore the area on foot instead of just from your vehicle, you can pick up maps of various trails. Calico Tanks Trail is a popular, easy trail through the Calico Hills, or more experienced hikers might want to opt for the challenging Turtlehead Peak Trail. 

Along the drive, you can stop at one of the numerous pull-out areas to appreciate the overlooks, take photographs, or have a picnic meal at one of the designated picnic areas. 

When to go: April-May or September-October are the best months since you can avoid the high temperatures of summer. 

2. Nevada Scenic Drives: Valley of Fire Road 

• Distance: 11 miles 
• Time needed: 30 minutes or more, depending on stops 

Valley of Fire is the oldest state park in Nevada and one of the most popular parks to visit. As you might guess, the park gets its name from the brilliant red sandstone, which can appear firelit, especially when the sun hits the rocks.

For this reason, it’s also one of the most photographed places in the state, so be prepared to pack your camera to capture the stunning Nevada scenery! 

This is a great scenic drive near Las Vegas since it’s less than an hour away from the city. Even though it’s not far away, you’ll feel worlds away from the busy downtown and bright lights of Vegas in the sandstone canyons. 

Although the entire drive is beautiful, there are some notable points of interest, like Atlatl Rock, an iconic rock formation that also has some petroglyphs you can get out to view up close. 

Rainbow Vista is another main attraction of the drive. There’s an overlook where you can park to get out and appreciate the multi-colored sandstone formations. If you want to hike, the Rainbow Vista Trail is a good, family-friendly hike that takes you away from the road for even better views of the landscape. 

When to go: Spring and fall are best, especially if you want to hike since summer temperatures can make exploring difficult. If you do drive in summer, make sure you have good AC! 

3. Nevada Scenic Drives: Great Basin Highway

• Distance: 510 miles for the entire route
• Time Needed: 1 day or more 

Often referred to as U.S. Route 93, this is one of the best scenic drives in Nevada if you’re traveling north or south through the state. The entire drive spans the length of eastern Nevada, connecting the Las Vegas area to Great Basin National Park. 

Although the whole drive is beautiful and full of stunning desert views and mountain landscapes, the region in and around Great Basin National Park itself is considered to have the best Nevada scenery. 

Close to the Utah border, the Great Basin is characterized by its undeveloped landscape, craggy mountain peaks, and expansive desert views. Wheeler Peak is the crowning mountain of the park, standing at 13,063 feet tall. Around the peak, there are lots of great hiking opportunities, including easier, family-friendly trails as well as difficult routes for expert hikers. 

This is also one of the best drives in Nevada for wildlife viewing, including animals like elk, pronghorn antelope, bighorn sheep, and coyotes. 

There are many places to camp in the park and a few nearby lodges if you’d rather not stay in a tent.  

When to go: May through September are considered the best months to visit Great Basin National Park. The park remains open in winter, but there are limited accommodation options. Route 93 is open year-round and is good to drive for any Nevada road trip. 

4. Nevada Scenic Drives: Extraterrestrial Highway 

• Distance: 98 miles 
• Time Needed: 2 hours without stops

One of the more unique scenic drives in Nevada, the Extraterrestrial Highway, goes close to the famous Area 51 and its top-secret military operations, which have become the fuel for numerous conspiracy theories, many of which feature UFOs and aliens. 

A lot of the local towns along the way have taken their proximity to Area 51 in stride. In the town of Rachel, you’ll find a lot of UFO-themed stores and restaurants, such as the famous Little A’Le’Inn restaurant and motel. Even if you don’t want to spend a night, you can still check out what events and alien-related activities might be hosted during your drive. 

Kids will enjoy visiting the Alien Research Center, which is really more of a gift shop and an iconic landmark of the route. Be sure to get photos in front of the legendary ET road sign, then pick up a fun trinket at the gift shop, which features hats, mugs, games, toys, and tons of other cool gadgets related to aliens. 

Beyond the quirky attractions of the drive, the Extraterrestrial Highway is also one of the best Nevada highways to appreciate the desert scenery. Thanks to the large stretches of road between towns, it’s also known for its beautiful starry night skies. Who knows, you might even spot something that’s not a star…. 

When to go: Any time of year is good for this scenic byway in Nevada. Always double-check your gas tank when you’re in towns since there are often long distances between stops. 

5. Nevada Scenic Drives: Lake Tahoe Loop 

• Distance: 72 miles total
• Time Needed: 2 or more hours 

The entire Lake Tahoe Loop is half in Nevada and half in California. If you’re on a road trip in Nevada, it’s a great drive to include if you’re already planning on heading onwards to northern California.

Although the views from the lake’s road and surrounding mountains are already beautiful, it’s worth setting aside enough time to make a few stops or even spend a night or two. 

On the Nevada side, Sand Harbor is one of the popular places to visit. There are excellent sandy beaches, so you can swim in the turquoise alpine waters (be warned, it is cold!), or rent a boat for a paddle. There are also picnic areas, so it’s a perfect place to stop for lunch before continuing the drive. 

If you’re interested in outdoor activities, Lake Tahoe will not disappoint you. During the summer, in addition to the lake activities like paddleboarding and swimming, you can go hiking or take horseback riding tours in the mountains. In the winter, Lake Tahoe is a popular ski destination with great resorts in Incline Village near the north end of the lake. 

When to go: Any time of year is good in terms of scenery, but certain seasons are better for various outdoor activities. Make sure you have reservations in advance around Lake Tahoe year-round since accommodation fills up fast! 

6. Nevada Scenic Drives: Lamoille Canyon Scenic Byway  

• Distance: About 12 miles 
• Time Needed: At least 30 minutes, but longer for stops and hiking 

One of the best scenic byways in northern Nevada, the Lamoille Canyon Drive is listed as one of the National Forest Scenic Byways in the United States. This area of the Ruby Mountains is considered to have some of the most beautiful scenery in Nevada.

Photographers love the region thanks to the combination of craggy snowy mountain peaks, red rock formations (thus the name Ruby Mountains), waterfalls, and alpine lakes. The drive is stunning, but to really appreciate the area, going for a hike (or at least stopping for a picnic) is a good idea. 

Lamoille Canyon itself is the prime attraction of the drive. Some of the top hiking trails include the Lamoille Lake Trail and the Ruby Crest National Recreation Trail. The Lamoille Lake Trail is a good option for families with kids who might not be up to a longer trek but still want to get out to explore the Ruby Mountains. 

When to go: This drive is typically open between May and October, but exact opening times may vary depending on weather conditions. 

7. Nevada Scenic Drives: America’s Loneliest Road 

• Distance: About 300 miles in Nevada
• Time Needed: 3 hours or more 

The portion of U.S. Route 50 through Nevada has become known as “America’s Loneliest Road” thanks to the vast expanse of rugged desert scenery that characterizes this area. 

Although there isn’t as much variation as other Nevada scenic drives, the rough and wild landscape is still captivating. In the distance, the mountain ranges loom, while beside the car, the wide-open desert has an other-worldly feel. 

Keep in mind that “America’s Loneliest Road” gets its name for a reason: there are often very long stretches of highway without any restaurants or service stops. Take advantage of the little towns along the way to fuel up your car, grab a bite to eat, and maybe pick up a Wild West souvenir for your road trip in Nevada. 

When to go: Any time of year is good for this drive.

What Happens to Your Car in Extreme Heat?

It is important to understand exactly how the heat can affect your vehicle, the limits of your vehicle in high temperatures – and a little mechanics 101!

Tires in extreme heat

The most important change you may notice from your normal driving conditions is the impact on tires. Extremely high temperatures can damage the rubber in your tires, especially if they are not properly inflated – there’s a much higher risk of a tire blowout in the summer. The heat also impacts on the surface of the tire.

If your tires are over inflated, the center will wear out much quicker than the edges. A properly inflated tire should have a more even surface.  Make a stop at the air pump and check tire pressure as part of your routine fuel stops (yes I know, that means getting out of your car in the heat – a worthy investment!) 

Note the exact amount of air pressure required varies by your vehicle, you will need to look up your manufacturer’s handbook – yes that thing you keep shoved in the glove compartment for guidance. And don’t forget your spare tire!

It should also go without saying, stick to speed limit in desert areas. Even if the desolate and wide open desert roads with no police speed cameras around feel like ideal road conditions to drive as fast as you like, you don’t want to risk a blow out.

Engine coolant and radiator

Low coolant levels in high heat can kill your engine. Keep an eye on your vehicle’s temperature gauge. Note: Never check the coolant while the vehicle is hot!

If you have a damaged radiator or hoses, coolant may leak causing your engine temperature to rise even more. Regular servicing checks should include inspecting this part of your car.

Batteries in extreme heat

The battery of your car is composed of both water and acid. When temperatures start to heat up, the water in the battery will evaporate faster, leaving the lead plates exposed. When the weather turns cold again, your battery will no longer have the amperage to start the car.

Oil in extreme heat

A hot engine needs all the lubrication it can get, so making sure you change the oil when necessary. This might involve more frequent oil changes than you normally would in a cooler climate. If your vehicle has an automatic transmission, check the level of the auto box.

Fuel in extreme heat

Fuel evaporates quicker in a hot vehicle than it does in a cold one. Keeping your car in a garage or shade as much as possible will improve your fuel economy for desert driving.

Remember remote areas you’ll have far fewer petrol station stops, so do fuel up when you can.

Your car’s interior in extreme heat

It doesn’t take long living in a hot country to work out how essential a windshield sun shade is to keep your cars steering wheel and gear stick remotely out of the direct sun, but don’t forget about all the other parts of your car.

Whilst window tinting can most definitely help, in the summer extremes, you may want to cover car seats too, especially buckles and straps that the kids might touch. If you don’t have a proper UV cover, you could even just use a light colored towel to reflect some of the heat.

Always check your kid’s seat buckles before they go to strap themselves in if you’ve been parked in the direct sun [because, of course, YOU WILL ALWAYS DRIVE WITH YOUR KIDS STRAPPED IN!]

Make sure to keep your car parked in the shade as much as you can, there’s only so much your air conditioner can deal with.

Your smartphone in extreme heat

Let’s be honest, none of us leaves home without a cell phone these days, right? And they are frankly our first line of defense these days is we do have a problem. But don’t just assume your phone is your knight in shining armor in the desert. 

Phones also hate the extreme weather conditions. In fact, anything over 35°C/95°F whilst our air-conditioned car can normally keep it under control, if you are broken down with no air conditioning, remember your battery can drain out much faster.

Not to mention once you are outside urban areas you may not have reception.

Always keep a spare battery kit with you – as well as emergency phone numbers stored somewhere other than just in your phone so a passing motorist may be able to help.

Basic Survival Supplies to Keep in Your Car

Now without being too dramatic, what happens if you break down in the desert? There can frequently be sections of the desert with not another car in sight. Especially in the middle of the day when farmers and locals who frequent the roads are not in sight, so what do you do if you’re stuck on the side of the road?

Emergency supplies that can be kept in your car for you & your family

You don’t need to be taking an epic desert camping trip before you take these precautions. It’s sensible for all drivers in hot desert areas to understand their vehicle, the effects the heat can have on it and what to do in case of an emergency.

• A spare phone charger – as we mentioned before you cannot rely just on re-charging through your car
• Physical maps – you’ll find limited or no signal once you hit the desert so don’t rely on your online phone apps
• Plenty of water
• Enough food – Dry snacks such as granola bars or the like should be kept in your glove compartment
• Hats & sunscreen
• Lightweight long clothing
• A first aid kit

Remember, you’re not preparing for ultimate desert survival for a week. Still, some essentials that you can feel comfortable with until help arrives are important – this could be minutes or hours, depending on where you’re located. 

If you are off-roading or camping, there’s a whole other load of suggestions for what you can include!

Emergency Supplies For Your Vehicle

Review your vehicles emergency kit – sure we all know we have them right? If you have purchased a second-hand vehicle, it is wise to get a new emergency kit as essential parts may be missing.

Although not intentional to off-road, have you got the correct recovery equipment if you do accidentally find yourself “off-the-beaten-path”? (we’ve all had to make an emergency U-turn at some point!)

A basic collapsible sand shovel will be enough in most situations and don’t forget to let some air out of your tires if this occurs, this gives your tire a bigger ‘footprint’ to work with and easier to glide over the sand rather than digging in. A traction mat can also be a bonus to pack if space allows.

Also consider items such as road flares, jump cables and safety gloves if you’re putting together a DIY road safety kits suitable for desert conditions.

Regular Servicing Checks For Your Vehicle

The best advice I can give is to keep your vehicle regularly inspected – this is more than just when your annual vehicle registration is due! Especially if you have not owned it from new you don’t know how the previous owner has treated it.

I make it a habit to check our vehicles every 5,000 miles – something I would probably not be so fastidious about, but the extremely hot weather as you can see can have a severe impact on your vehicle far beyond every day use at “home”‘ little and often should save you from some major repairs if things go wrong.

I ask my garage to look at changing the oil and air filters, do tires need rotating or replacing, is the A/C gassed, brakes checked, fire extinguisher present, windshield wipers working (even dust needs wiping off!) – all that good stuff.

Best Time to Visit the UAE

Situated on the Arabian Peninsula, facing the Persian Gulf to the north and Oman Sea to the east, the United Arab Emirates has a hot, desert climate. With blistering hot summers, undoubtedly, the best time to take a road trip in the UAE is during the milder winter weather, broadly speaking November to April.

During the winter, it is usually clear, bright blue sky days and mild temperatures, rainfall is rare. Should you face thunderstorms or treacherous conditions in the UAE, however, it is best not to hit the roads as flash flooding can occur and many drivers are not used to such conditions, making it hazardous for everyone.

The busiest time of year for visiting the UAE is over the Christmas-New Year break and spring break time (around March and April ); plan accommodation in advance accordingly.

Also, take note of religious occasions such as Ramadan and Eid when planning your UAE visit dates. On public holiday weekends you’ll find the attractions we mention in this article exceptionally busier; if you’re visiting from overseas, Monday to Thursday will be much quieter days to take a road trip around the UAE.

How to Get Around in the UAE

With most public transport in the UAE limited to the big cities and Intercity buses, the best way to truly explore the United Arad Emirates is to hire a car and get out on the road.

It’s important to bear in mind that city driving in Dubai especially can be tough. There are large multi-lane freeways that move FAST, multi-lane roundabouts, truck lanes and fast lanes to think about. Some top pointers for playing it safe on UAE roads:

• Driving in the UAE is on the right-hand side of the road, the steering wheel on the left.
• If your drivers licence is not in English or Arabic, you will need an International Drivers Permit.
• Road signs are all written in English and Arabic.
• The sign posted maximum speed limits have 20km leeway before you receive a fine, so you will find that traffic in the left-hand lanes will move faster than the posted limits; stick to the middle lane if you’re unsure (the right lanes are usually reserved for slow-moving heavy trucks and buses).
• Take on board these safety tips for driving in desert conditions if you’ll be leaving the major cities
• All the drives we explain here can be tackled in an ordinary 2WD vehicle; it’s not recommended to go off-roading into the desert or wadis in the UAE unless you’re with other experienced drivers or as part of a tour.

Best Road Trips in UAE

Although you can set out from anywhere in the UAE to commence your road trip, we will assume you are starting from Downtown Dubai when calculating time and distance.

From Dubai to Abu Dhabi: Modern Wonders

• Distance: 140 kms / 87 miles
• Time Needed: 4 hours to 2 days

Starting with the most popular and easy to reach day trip destination from Dubai, Abu Dhabi, the country’s capital city is home to stunning architecture and thrilling adventures.

The number one attraction in the UAE is visiting the impressive Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Other architecturally brilliant buildings we would recommend include The Louvre Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat Island and Qasr Al Watan, the country’s Presidential Palace.

History buffs, make time in your road trip to see the city’s oldest building Qasr Al Hosn, and for nature lovers, the Jubail Mangrove Walk on Jubail Island is a must-see.

Outside of the city you’ll be glad to have your own wheels to see the more remote parts of the Emirate. Al Wathba Fossil Dunes are fascinating sand dune formations and nearby you’ll find the utterly instargammable Al Wathba Salt Lake – Google Map them for exact pin drops!

And not forgetting the kids, theme park buffs will love a day on Yas Island. With 4 family theme parks including SeaWorld, Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi and Yas Waterworld, you will not run short of kid-friendly activities in Abu Dhabi.

Whilst a simple visit down the road to the Grand Mosque and back could be achieved in under 4 hours on a round trip from Dubai, we recommend you dedicate at least 2 to 3 days of your UAE itinerary to exploring Abu Dhabi if time will allow.

Where to stay: For beach vibes, you want one of the stunning resorts that line Saadiyat Beach, or for convenience to the theme parks and Abu Dhabi Airport, stay on Yas Island.

The Northern Emirates: Mountains, Forts, and Coastlines

• Distance: 113 kms / 70 miles
• Time Needed: 4 hours to 1-2 days

Ras Al Khaimah (RAK), sitting to the northeast of Dubai has earned itself the reputation of the Adventure Emirate. From sea to sky-high mountains (yes, there’s a mountain range in this desert country!) you can enjoy many unique experiences on a trip to Ras al Khaimah.

Whilst perhaps more famous in recent years for its string of fancy waterfront resorts, Ras Al Khaimah is home to the tallest peak in the country Jebel Jais, in the Hajar Mountains which run the entire length of the country’s east coast and all through the east coast of Oman.

The spectacular 30-kilometer tarmacked mountain drive, full of switchbacks and steep inclines is one of the most spectacular scenic driving roads in the country.

Near the peak of Jebel Jais, this is an outdoor adventure lover’s paradise with the opportunity to take on the longest zipline in the world. There are additionally aerial ropes courses, Via Ferrata and many more adrenaline-pumping adventures.

Where to stay: If budget permits, The Ritz-Carlton Ras Al Khaimah Al Wadi Desert is one of the best desert resorts in the UAE. Closer to the beach, you’ll find a great range of accommodation options on Marjan Island.

Al Ain: The Garden City and Historic Oasis

• Distance: 145 kms / 90 miles
• Time Needed: 6 hours to a full day

The historic Oasis City of Al Ain, also known as the Garden City has a reputation as the birth place of the UAE, where the country’s founding father, Sheikh Zayed was born.

The drive itself to Al Ain is a relatively straight forward freeway drive from Dubai in around 90 minutes; its the fascinating adventures that await when you arrive make it best to have your own car.

The centre of town is dominated by the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Al Ain Oasis, a 1,200 hectare shaded park with over 147,000 date palm trees and demonstrating the traditional falaj watering system. Other historic sites dating back to the bronze age are dotted around the city outskirts.

The Al Ain Zoo is also highly acclaimed as one of the cities best attractions. With the addition of a safari a few years ago this makes for a fascinating desert adventure that kids and adults alike will enjoy.

The Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Centre within the zoo is one of the best educational and history resources in the country if you want to learn about the ancient heritage and physical geography of the Arabian Peninsula.

Plenty of other museums also wait you in Al Ain; for history buffs the Al Ain Palace Museum and the Al Jahili Fort are must-stops. You can also check in to the the more modern Qasr al Mawaji, birth home of the former UAE President and ruler of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Khalifa.

The highlight for drivers, though, is the climb to the top of Jebel Hafeet, the tallest point in Abu Dhabi Emirate. The steep drive from Green Mubazzarah (a park with natural springs) at the mountain to the peak will take around 30 minutes each way, winding to the top and offering spectacular views over to Oman.

Where to stay: Although a little dated these days, the Mercure Grand Jebel Hafeet on top of Jebel Hafeet affords you some incredible scenic views. We like the Al Ain Rotana for a good city stay close to the Al Ain Oasis, or adventure seekers will love the glamping options at Jebel Hafit Desert Park.

The Desert Adventure: Liwa Oasis and the Empty Quarter

• Distance: 335 kilometres / 208 miles
• Time Needed: full day – overnight

If you’re up for an Arabian Nights style adventure into the desert dunes then this road trip into the Liwa Desert is for you.

It’s not called the Empty Quarter without reason, swathes of desert which make up the vast majority of the land mass of the UAE are only accessible via a few well maintained paved roads that take guests into a complete different side of the Emirates.

Those with a 4WD and the right equipment can take on the vast dunes or for a more sedate experience, try one of the luxury resorts of glamping options to experience the incredibly star lit nights and days.

If you feel that any of the landscape looks familiar, the Liwa desert is part of the backdrop for the planet Jakku in Star Wars: The Force Awakens!

NB it’s not recommended to drive in the Liwa Desert in the peak heat of the day, you should look to explore early morning and late afternoons/evenings. Off-roading is only for those who really know what they’re doing sand driving.

Where to stay: Unmissable is a night in Anantara Qasr al Sarab Desert Resort, the ultimate of luxurious desert experiences in the UAE (or anywhere in he world, for that matter). Those on a smaller budget could try spending the night near Madinat Zayed in the Tilal Liwa Desert Retreat, or try the new glamping experience at Bab Al Nojoum Bateen Liwa.

Top Tip: Visiting the western region during the Al Dhafra Festival (dates vary annually but usually around December/January) you could get the opportunity to see a camel beauty pageant! No laughing matter, this is serious business and one for the most unique experiences in the UAE where you will see owners competing for millions In prize money at the coverted Al Mazayan. Watch camels being traded on Millionaires Row and soak in the atmosphere and this traditional Bedouin event

Finding Fjords in the Musandam Peninsula

• Distance:197 kms / 122 miles
• Time Needed: 6 hours to a full day

How do you fancy taking on a whole new country during your road trip from Dubai? The drive from Dubai to Khasab on the Musandam Peninsula sees you at the very tip of the Arabian peninsula, just 40 kms from Iran over the Strait of Hormuz!

Despite driving much of the way through the United Arab Emirates, Musandam is actually an exclave of Oman. You will be crossing an international border, so visas and passports will be required and proof of vehicle ownership with permission to cross the border is required (make sure if you’re hiring a car that this is included!)

Whilst the drive through northern Ras Al Khaimah can feel a little industrial, the moment you cross the Al Darah border, you enter the most incredible coastal journey. The highway winds its way around the rocky khors.

Once you are in Khasab, kick back and relax as life moves a lot slower here. The regional capital is very small, but the starting point of fabulous cruising into the khors (mountainous fjords). You can join a dolphin-watching tour or hire your own private dhow for a serene adventure out on the water, even find your own private beach.

Top Tip: Avoid heading out on this journey Friday afternoon and coming back on a Sunday night as you are you’ll likely encounter long queues at the border crossing when local residents also take to the road. Remember accommodation options are limited so its highly recommended to pre-book if you want to stay overnight in Khasab.

More Tips For Visiting the UAE

• Check you have the right visa for entering the UAE. Many nationalities can enter the UAE with a free Visa on arrival but don’t get caught out; equally if you’ll be crossing into Oman be aware most nationalities will require a Visa.

• With the fast-pace nature of construction in the UAE, roads can change quickly! Navigation apps are generally up to date, and you could get by with just Google Maps, though many locally prefer to use Waze as the best navigation app for the UAE (Google Play | App Store).

• Be mindful that you can lose mobile reception once you leave the big towns and major freeways, we recommend you keep an offline map on your phone.

• If heading beyond the cities, remember to fuel up when you can. Despite being an oil-rich country, you may be surprised there are no fuel stations when you need one in the more remote corners of the country!

For many people, driving the Nullarbor is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. So you should give yourself as much time as possible to do it justice during your Melbourne to Perth trip.

Two weeks would be a reasonable amount of time to set aside for this journey, as it would give you plenty of opportunity for sightseeing, transiting and resting.

But, if you only have a little time at your disposal and have two or more people with a licence, driving from Melbourne to Perth can be done in about 3-5 days.

Best Time of Year to Drive from Melbourne to Perth

The best time to complete a Melbourne to Perth road trip through the Nullarbor Plain is during the Australian winter months of June to August.

Many people don’t realise that temperatures in the Nullarbor fluctuate wildly in the summer (Dec to Feb). The mercury can touch 50°C during the day, only to fall close to zero at night!

These extreme temperatures, particularly the heat, can also impact your enjoyment of certain outdoor scenic attractions. (Really, you should not stand outside for more than 5 – 15 minutes during the heat of the day in the summer.)

If you visit during winter, you can spend more time sightseeing in much safer temperatures.

That said, spring (Sept to Oct) is a nice time to complete the drive, as the season offers pleasant temperatures, which lead to more comfortable driving conditions. It is also a period when wildflowers bloom across the Nullarbor, thus making it an even more beautiful drive.

Here are some destinations we consider to be must-visits along the most direct route from Melbourne to Perth:

Grampians National Park

Just three hours from the Melbourne CBD, Grampians National Park is a fabulous destination for families that love stunning landscapes and outdoor adventures.

The park is located in the state’s western part and is renowned for its rugged mountain ranges, ancient rock formations, diverse wildlife and opportunities to connect with nature. 

One of the main highlights of visiting Grampians National Park with kids is the network of walking trails you can explore as a family. They take you to breathtaking viewpoints, such as The Pinnacle or Boroka Lookout, where you can take a group photo against panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and rock formations.

Along the way, kids can spot unique flora and fauna, including kangaroos, emus, and various bird species. They can also learn about the rich Indigenous cultural heritage of the area, as the park is home to significant Aboriginal rock art sites.

Another of the park’s main drawcards is MacKenzie Falls, a magnificent cascade that tips over the edge of majestic cliffs. At the bottom of it are rock pools where you can go for a refreshing dip.

About an hour’s drive from Adelaide resides Murray Bridge. You should consider stopping here for several reasons, especially if you have children. 

One of the main reasons is that it is home to some of the darkest skies in Australia. Therefore, it provides outstanding conditions to see the Milky Way in all its glory. Be sure to check out the River Murray Dark Sky Reserve for the best views of it.

Aside from the skies, its location on the banks of the Murray River provides plenty of opportunities for aquatic fun such as swimming, kayaking, canoeing and SUP. You can also take a leisurely cruise along the river on a paddle steamer, learning about the history and ecology of the region while taking in the picturesque scenery.

Close by, the Monarto Safari Park is a terrific open-range 1500-hectare zoo where kids can observe a diverse range of animals up close, including giraffes, lions, rhinos, and kangaroos. The park also offers unique behind-the-scenes experiences and guided tours that provide educational insights into conservation and animal care.

Despite enjoying a coastal location, one of the main reasons to come here is to learn about The Outback. You can do this at the Wadlata Outback Centre, an award-winning interactive visitor centre that takes you on a journey through the history and culture of the Australian Outback.

Children here can view several exhibits, including a replica underground opal mine and a working sheep station, and learn about the region’s indigenous heritage. The centre also offers a 3D cinema experience that brings The Outback to life.

Port Augusta is situated near the southern end of the Flinders Ranges, making it a gateway to this iconic mountain range. Families can embark on scenic drives through it, enjoying breathtaking views of rugged landscapes and ancient rock formations. 

The area also offers numerous hiking trails suitable for children, providing opportunities to spot wildlife, admire colourful wildflowers, and soak in the serenity of nature.

If you don’t fancy detouring there, the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden is a nice spot to discover native plant species. The garden also offers guided tours and hosts educational programs for children, allowing them to learn about the importance of conserving Australia’s natural environment.

Gawler Ranges National Park

After Port Augusta, you should pencil in a trip to the Gawler Ranges National Park.

It is about a four-hour drive away, so it makes an excellent rest stop during the drive. But it is also worth visiting for its incredible rugged and diverse landscape.

One of the main attractions in Gawler Ranges National Park is the Organ Pipes, a fascinating geological formation that resembles a series of towering organ pipes. Kids will be amazed by the natural beauty and unique shapes of these rock formations, formed millions of years ago. If you explore the area around the base of the Organ Pipes, you will also likely see kangaroos and emus.

Within the park, Lake Gairdner is a massive salt lake with vast expanses of white salt flats that create a surreal and otherworldly landscape. Your kids will love to walk on the salt crust and create patterns on it. They may also be able to swim in it depending on the time of year you visit.

Gawler Ranges National Park is also home to Mount Wudinna, an impressive granite monolith with panoramic views from its summit. You can hike to the top, although it is probably not suitable for younger kids.

Ceduna

Ceduna in South Australia represents the last town before the start of the Nullarbor Drive. So you should take the opportunity to get a good night’s rest here and fill up on petrol and other essential supplies.

If you stay here, the Ceduna Foreshore Hotel Motel is a good option. It offers a giant water slide that provides hours of fun for kids. The venue also features a playground, perfect for younger children to burn off some energy while enjoying outdoor playtime.

Located on the Eyre Peninsula, the hotel is also close to the beach, whose white sandy shores and clear turquoise waters are great for swimming, fishing and snorkelling. Nearby it, you should also take the opportunity to view the colony of sea lions at the Point Labatt Conservation Park.

For a dose of culture and history, the Ceduna National Trust Museum showcases the local heritage, providing insights into the area’s Indigenous culture, early European settlement, and maritime history. Kids can learn about the region’s fascinating past through interactive exhibits, displays, and artefacts.

Eucla

You’ll find several roadhouses within the small towns that line the Nullarbor where you can fuel up. However, should you want to stretch your legs for a while, Eucla is a terrific stop in which to do so.

Providing a unique and off-the-beaten-path adventure, this small town on the Nullarbor Plain offers a glimpse into the vastness and beauty of Australia’s outback.

Blessed with incredible scenery that includes endless horizons, stunning coastal cliffs and rolling sand dunes, it is known for the historic Eucla Telegraph Station ruins. This heritage site showcases the town’s past and role in developing early communication systems.

The Eucla National Park is another must-visit destination. Families can embark on nature walks to scenic lookout points where you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Southern Ocean and the rugged coastline. Sandboarding is also popular here, allowing kids to slide down the sandy slopes on specially designed boards in a thrilling experience.

• The drive from Ecula to Norseman is over 700 kilometres, including the longest straight road in Australia, the “90-mile Straight” (well, in fact, 91.1 miles or 146.6 kilometres without a turn). Stay alert and well-rested before tackling this leg.

Norseman

Norseman is the first town you get to after leaving the Nullarbor Plain. So you should stop here to refuel and rest before completing your drive to Perth.

Norseman is known for its rich mining history, which you can learn about by visiting the Norseman Mining Museum. The museum showcases exhibits that provide insight into the mining practices of the past and the significance of gold in shaping the region’s history. It’s an educational and engaging experience that can spark curiosity and interest in geology and mining with your kids.

Other attractions like the Fraser Range Station and the Dundas Nature Reserve offer opportunities for camping, bushwalking and wildlife spotting, while, like Eucla, Norseman is also a fantastic spot for stargazing.

Kalgoorlie

Kalgoorlie is one of Australia’s most famous tourist destinations. Even though it’s only a 2-hour drive from Norseman, you should stop here for a day or two during your drive from Melbourne to Perth.

Known for its rich gold mining history and vast landscapes, Kalgoorlie offers a range of activities that will engage the whole family.

Arguably its most compelling attraction is the Super Pit. In this open-pit gold mine, you can take a guided tour to learn about the mining process and the Super Pit’s history and get an up-close look at the massive machinery used in mining operations. It’s a unique opportunity for kids to witness firsthand the scale of a working gold mine.

Another highlight of visiting Kalgoorlie is exploring the town’s historical sites. Walk through the streets and admire the beautifully preserved heritage buildings that showcase the town’s gold rush past. They include the Kalgoorlie Town Hall, Post Office, and the Western Australian Museum.

Nearby, Karlkurla Bushland Park is a great place to visit for families who like to get active. Detours To Consider Driving Melbourne to Perth

The Melbourne to Perth itinerary we’ve shared here is the most direct route. However, there are several detours you could add to make this a much more in-depth coastal driving itinerary. These are some popular detours to add to your Melbourne to Perth drive:

Drive the Great Ocean Road

Setting out from Melbourne, head to Geelong and Torquay instead of heading directly to the Western Highway to take on the world-renowned Great Ocean Road. This 242-kilometre stretch of rugged coastal drive is one of the most beautiful roads in the world.

If this is your only trip Downunder, we highly recommend taking the extra few days to explore this Australian gem, taking in the 12 Apostles, Otways National Park and Loch Ard Gorge before continuing to Adelaide through the Limestone Coast region.

Eyre Peninsula

If you’re seeking even more dramatic coastal beauty, then a detour to South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula is a must. From Port Augusta, head south to Whyalla, then Port Lincoln, and explore Lincoln National Park. Adrenaline junkies may be interested in cage-diving experiences from Neptune Island Conservation Park.

Enjoy more stunning cliffs and glorious remote beaches around the Eyre Peninsula. Visit Coffin Bay, famous for its oysters, and onward to Baird Bay, renowned for its sea lion colony. You’ll rejoin the above itinerary at Ceduna to fuel up for your long Nullarbor stretch of driving to Ecula.

Southern Western Australia

Another popular detour to take is continuing on the coastal route beyond Esperance instead of heading north to Norseman and Kalgoorlie. Take in Bremer Bay, famous for its brilliant beaches and orcas, and continue to the port city of Albany and stunningly beautiful Denmark and William Bay on the southern coast.

You’ll pass through Walpole and the tall timber of the southern forests and see Australia’s most south-westerly point in Augusta before completing your journey north through the acclaimed Margaret River Region, Bunbury and finishing your journey in the Western Australian capital of Perth.

We’d suggest a further week at least is needed for this detour (did we mention wineries and craft breweries? You’ll want plenty of rest days built in too!)

More Tips for Road Tripping Melbourne to Perth

As exciting a prospect as driving across the Nullarbor is, it can also be quite a challenge. Here are some tips to make it as pleasurable an experience as possible.

• The Nullarbor Plain is a vast and remote region, so planning your journey is crucial. Decide whether you’ll be driving the Eyre Highway or taking an alternative route, and make a note of fuel stations, accommodations and food options along the way.
• Petrol stations can sometimes be hundreds of kilometres apart on the drive through the Nullarbor. So make sure you fill up with fuel or recharge your EV whenever you can – even if you still have more than 50% capacity left.
• If you are driving a petrol vehicle, consider taking some fuel with you, not just for yourself but anyone you see who might have run out along the way.
• Before attempting the crossing, ensure you stock up on supplies like food, water, and any necessary medications, as there may be limited options for purchasing these items along the route. It is worth taking at least 3-4 days’ worth of supplies with you – as a minimum.
• The Nullarbor can be a long and monotonous drive, so staying focused and alert is essential. Avoid fatigue by taking regular breaks and switching drivers often to keep yourself fresh.
• To break up the boredom of the long drive, consider creating a music or podcast playlist you can access offline through apps like Spotify Premium. Doing this will keep you entertained along the way. If you have kids, consider downloading movies onto an iPad and bring lots of toys, games, books and crafts for them.
• Try to leave as early in the morning as possible – no later than 6 am ideally – to give you as many hours of daylight as possible to navigate the road.
• Whilst driving, be mindful of wildlife, as kangaroos, emus, and other animals can cross the road unexpectedly. Take extra caution at dawn, dusk, and night when they are more active.
• If you see birds on the road feasting on roadkill, beep your horn (as opposed to swerving into the opposite lane), as this will make them disperse quickly.
• Ensure you have an emergency kit in your vehicle, including a spare tyre, tools, first aid supplies and a flashlight. It’s also advisable to carry a satellite phone or a UHF radio for communication in extreme emergencies.
• When passing through small towns along the Nullarbor, take the opportunity to connect with the locals. They can offer valuable insights, tips, and recommendations for the region.

Arizona is king when it comes to gorgeous desert scenery. In fact, The Grand Canyon State is the only place in the United State that boasts four completely different desert regions, each with its own set of fauna, flora, and geology. 

Suppose you’re currently in the planning stages of your trip to Arizona. In that case, chances are what you’re looking forward to the most is experiencing the desert, but with so many amazing destinations spread all over, how do you even begin to choose what to see and where to go? 

From the Mars-like landscapes of Monument Valley to sand dunes dotted by giant cacti, here are some of the best places in Arizona to visit if desert magic is what you’re after! 

Places in Arizona You’ve Got to Visit for Desert Magic 

1. Monument Valley 

Located in the spot where Utah and Arizona meet, Monument Valley is more than just a desert destination – it’s actually an icon of the Southwest! 

The entire landscape here is made up of looming red sandstone formations, mesas so huge you’ll have to pinch yourself, and buttes so beautiful you’ll feel as though they should belong in a painting. 

The ultimate way to explore Monument Valley in a short time is by driving the park’s scenic road, which will have you zigzagging your way through the area in order to see the highlights. Hiking is also a thing here. Located close to the city of Tucson, Saguaro National Park is a world of quintessential desert landscapes dotted by humongous saguaro cacti.  

Commonly nicknamed the “Kings of the Sonoran Desert,” Saguaros are known to grow as tall as 50 feet and live up to 200 years, and Saguaro National Park is one of the very few places in the world where you can see so many of them growing wild. 

Aside from gawking at these desert giants, Saguaro National Park is also home to mountains and pine forests, which pretty much means you’ll have plenty of options to choose from when deciding what to see and do during your time there.  

Moreover, Saguaro is considered a mecca for seeing desert wildlife, which you’ll be easily able to spot while hiking or scenic driving (keep your eyes out for coyotes, desert tortoises, deer, and javelinas!) 

3. Canyon De Chelly National Monument 

Canyon De Chelly is more than just a beautiful landscape. 

Located in northwestern Arizona and right in the heart of the Navajo Indian Reserve, Canyon De Chelly is an extremely unique place to visit due to the fact that it has been continuously inhabited for thousands of years.  

As you explore, you’ll stumble across signs of life from its first inhabitants through ruins and petroglyphs from the Anazaki and Puebloans. In the present day, Navajo people still call the canyon their home, which provides a unique opportunity to learn more about their culture and life. 

4. Sedona 

Sedona is a staple of quintessential Arizona desert scenery, which makes it a must on any itinerary through the state, especially for those who want to explore the outdoors while still enjoying city-like amenities and comfort. 

The town itself brims with history and culture, but its main allure is in the fact that it’s located a stone’s throw away from some of the most sought-after natural destinations in Arizona.

During your time here, you’ll get to explore state parks, hit a few hiking trails through beautiful desert landscapes, check out vortex sites, and scenic drive in search of unique spots, including a cathedral located atop red rocks! 

5. Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument 

Tucked away in the heart of the alluring Sonoran Desert, Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument is another must if unique vistas are what you’re after. 

Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument is the only place in the United States where organ pipe cacti grow in their natural habitat. Organ pipes are very similar to saguaros, but instead of being made up of one large trunk, they consist of several, which makes them look even more enormous in comparison! 

Plus, aside from getting to explore a sea of cacti, Organ Pipe also homes an array of interesting archaeological sites as well as unique desert flora and fauna, including rattlesnakes and Gila monsters.

6. Joshua Tree Forest Parkway

Think California’s the only place you’ll find iconic Joshua trees? Route 93 a.k.a. The Joshua Tree Parkway, is one of the hidden gems of northern Arizona. Between Wickenburg and Wikieup you can capture a 7-mile stretch where Joshua trees line both sides of the road.

Joshua trees – not actually a tree but a yucca brevifolia – grow up to 20 feet tall. Their pom-pom-looking branches provided a unique habitat for many birds, reptiles and mammals – and look pretty visually spectacular too! A great side stop for anyone making the road trip from Phoenix to Vegas.

1. Grasshopper Point Swimming and Picnic Area

As you drive out of Sedona, you’ll find the Grasshopper Point Swimming and Picnic Area on Route 89A.

It is part of the Coconino National Forest and is a famous spot for tourists and locals to go for a swim, enjoy a relaxing picnic, or simply hang out before heading off toward the Grand Canyon.

Grasshopper Point has a proper arrangement for picnic tables; however, given the crowd, they get filled very quickly. Therefore, if you go early in the morning, you might easily get a good spot.

There are also several trails in the park, the Allen’s Bend, Casner Canyon trail, and the Huckaby trail.

There are five deer species, including reindeer, sika deer, and Coues deer. Then there are wallabies, llamas, coatimundi, bison, peacocks, cockatoos, goats, camels, and porcupines.

But that’s not all! You can get up close and personal with the animals by feeding them, walking them, and petting them.

The Grand Canyon Deer Farm is the ultimate animal wonderland for all animal lovers out there!

7. Bearizona Wildlife Park

If you’ve not had enough of the animals, don’t worry, as just 7 miles from the Deer Farm, you will reach the Bearizona Wildlife Park.

The park offers the visitors a drive-thru experience, where you can drive along the path and look at the animals in their natural habitat. There’s also a walk-thru facility, which starts right after the drive-thru portion. Here you will find the Bearizona Barnyard, where you can pet-friendly farm animals and walk through pathways viewing the animal enclosures.

The Bearizona Wildlife Park is home to black bears, Alaskan Tundra wolf, American bison, Arctic wolf, bighorn sheep, bobcats, deer, pythons, grizzly bears, jaguars, Fennec fox, red fox, mountain elks, and reindeer, to name a few.

8. Canyon Coaster Adventure Park

Just as you exit the Bearizona Wildlife Park and get back on Historic Route 66, you must drive for approximately 3 miles before reaching the Canyon Coaster Adventure Park.

This park is full of thrill and excitement as you experience various fun rides and have the time of your life. First, there’s the 1-mile Canyon Coaster with a 35 feet tall track that takes you through a hair-raising ride with dips, twists, and 360 degrees corkscrews.

Next, there’s Summer Mountain Tubing, where you can slide down the mountain in tubes! There is also Winter Snow Tubing, where you can slide down a snow mountain in tubes! The snow is made using snowmakers so that you can enjoy this experience from November till Easter.

If you’re famished after all the fun activities, you can head to the Bar and Grill and grab a slice of pizza, bite into a juicy burger or sandwich, or munch on a variety of salads. At the Canyon Coaster Bar and Grill, there’s something for everyone!

9. Williams

After an adrenaline-rushing experience at the Canyon Coaster Adventure Park, it’s time to make your way to Williams.

Although it is a small town, there are many things to do there! For instance, the Historic Route 66 Museum is a great place to visit if you’re interested in the history of Route 66. It has several murals from the past, pictures of groups of people that traveled this road, and the path the Native Americans took for trading purposes.

The museum also has a separate building that houses 29 electric cars from the 19th century. In short, you will find many interesting details about the route’s history and other information.

Once you’re done taking a trip down the past, it’s time to go to the Grand Canyon Railway Station. From here, people take a train to Grand Canyon, enjoying the scenic view and other amenities.

However, the time can easily be extended, depending on how many stops you take along the way and how long you stay at each stop.

If you leave Salt Lake City early in the morning, you can easily reach Zion National Park by evening, including all the stopovers we mention here. It will be a long driving day, but nonetheless achievable in one day with regular opportunities for everyone to stretch their legs.

If you decide to explore the various stops along the way in more detail, like Cedar City, your road trip can extend from a few hours to a couple of days! It all depends on how you plan your road trip.

Best Time of the Year to Drive from Salt Lake City to Zion National Park

The best time of the year to drive from Salt Lake City to Zion National Park is during late spring and early fall, i.e., from April to May and September through November. During this time, the weather is comfortable, and the free shuttles in Zion National Park are active.

You can also visit between December and February because this time of the year sees less crowds; however, due to the cold season, you might not be able to enjoy all the attractions.

Therefore, if you want to experience everything in full swing but without intense heat and crowds, plan during Spring and Fall. If you want to avoid the crowds, December to February it is!

Best Stops to Make Between Salt Lake City and Zion National Park

The 5-hour drive between Salt Lake City and Zion National Park is anything but boring! You’ll find an array of scenic views ranging from unique rock formations to large expanses of countryside, and not to forget the adventure-filled stopovers.

Therefore, if you want to make every moment of your road trip count, here are the best stops to make between Salt Lake City and Zion National Park:

1. Great Salt Lake

OK, technically, this isn’t directly on the way, you’ll need to loop north a little before commencing your trip, but you can’t visit Salt Lake City and not capture Great Salt Lake!

From Interstate 15, you can take Exit 332 and take the 7-mile drive across the causeway to reach the Antelope Island State Park, the best place to experience the Great Salt Lake close to SLC.

The Great Salt Lake – the largest sale lake in the Western Hemisphere – is 75 miles long and 35 miles wide and 3 times saltier than the ocean! Do you know what this means? This means that the water is super-floaty and allows visitors to enjoy a relaxing float. But that’s not all! You will find 20 miles of hiking and biking trails to explore the area, after which you can lounge on the sandy beach.

2. Timpanogos Cave

Once you leave the Great Salt Lake and get back on Interstate 15, the second stopover on the route from Salt Lake City to Zion National Park is the Timpanogos Cave.

A little less than an hour away and 10 minutes from the Alpine Exit from Interstate 15, you will find the Timpanogos Cave National Monument.

It is a hidden world of beautifully decorated pools, stalagmites, and stalactites tucked away secretly underground. The National Parks Service hosts tours around the cave, where you learn about the ancient history and mystery behind the formation of the Timpanogos Cave.

Pro Tip: We only recommend this for families with older children due (or infants in soft carriers) as there’s a steep 1.5-mile hike needed in and out of the cave. The caves are only accessible on an organized cave tour, limited to 16 people per group. This should be booked in advance.

4. Fishlake National Forest

It is a green oasis with lakes perfect for fishing, reservoirs, a vast forest area with beautiful mountain views for camping, and several ATV trails.

So, take a detour to visit Fishlake National Forest and enjoy the beauty of nature while fishing peacefully by the lakeside.

5. Parowan Gap Petroglyphs

Set just a few miles on the Interstate in the Escalante Desert, the Parowan Gap Petroglyphs make a fascinating stop on your way from Salt Lake City to Zion National Park.

The Cedar Breaks National Monument is a 3-mile wide and 2000-feet deep natural amphitheater with some stunning Instagrammable rock formations. It is significantly less crowded than other canyons; therefore, you get a chance to enjoy the beautiful terrain in peace.

Cedar Breaks is 10,000 feet above sea level and makes for one of the best stargazing sites in the US, owing to the pollution-free and dry air.

So, if you’re looking to spend some quiet time, the Cedar Breaks National Monument is a must-visit place on your way to Zion National Park to explore the empty trails and enjoy the summer wildflowers.

8. Grafton

Although relatively short, the journey from Cedar Breaks to Zion National Park is known to have several noteworthy stops, including Grafton Town.

Grafton is a ghost town that was a bustling little place back in 1859 but was abandoned in 1944. It gained popularity again in 1969 due to the bicycle scene in the movie “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.” Since then, most people have taken a detour towards this ghost town to explore abandoned buildings, just for thrills.

This Utah-Arizona itinerary is perfect for first-timers looking for epic scenery, breathtaking trails, and active adventures on their family road trip.

There are plenty of ways you can tackle this journey, depending on where you need to arrive and leave.

For this family road trip itinerary, we’re starting at Moab and meander our way south through the Utah Mighty 5 to end at the Grand Canyon.

From there, you can continue onwards through more of Arizona’s incredible natural wonders and desert reserves or head west towards Nevada and Las Vegas.

Suggested 9-Day Desert Lovers Itinerary

Days 1 and 2: Canyonlands National Park (Island in the Sky and The Needles)

Canyonlands National Park is so vast that a lifetime can be spent exploring it without getting to see everything. Seriously, you could come back many times and never repeat the same experience twice! If you’re new to Moab, though, the best way to go is to explore the Island in the Sky section of the park, which is easier to tackle and will give you a good introduction to the area.

Get an early start by catching one of the most spectacular sunrises in your lifetime at Mesa Arch, one of the most iconic spots in Utah. Next, you can hit a few of the hiking trails on offer to get a good feel of the place. Grand View Point Trail, Gooseberry Canyon, and Upheaval Dome are great options!

To finish off the day in the same but opposite way that you started it, head to Green River Viewpoint and catch an epic sunset with spectacular vistas of the iconic canyons below. At this point, the sun’s rays fall on the canyon walls, bringing the red hues on the rocky surface to life, a splendid spectacle you won’t soon forget.

The next day, you can explore Island in the Sky further or choose to dive deeper into Canyonlands by heading to The Needles district, another amazing spot that offers amazing panoramic views of the canyon and features some off-the-beaten-path, more challenging hikes.

Day 3: Arches National Park

Arches National Park is pretty small as far as national parks go, but this doesn’t mean that it’s short on fabulous things to do and wonderful desert adventures!

Delicate Arch is an excellent place to start the day. This is probably the most iconic sight in Utah, to the point that it’s the arch depicted on their license plates! Next, take on the Landscape Arch trail, which will lead you to the largest natural arch in the USA and the entire world!

Afterwards, hop on your car and drive down the Arches Scenic Drive, a stunning road that offers a lot of great viewpoints where you can absorb spectacular, sweeping desert vistas.

At this point, it’ll be time for sunset. For a truly epic one, we recommend hiking up to Double Arch and continuing onwards until you reach The Windows, a perfect place to watch the sun go down and bid the day goodbye!

Note that timed reservations have been introduced for Arches National Park. From April to October, you’ll need to reserve your arrival time in advance to ensure entry and beat the summer queues.

Day 4: Capitol Reef National Park

Time to visit Capitol Reef, where the surest way of getting the most out of your stay here is by hiking to Hickman Bridge, a classic trail (2 miles round trip) that will take you to some of the most iconic spots in the park.

After hiking, hop back in your car and take Highway 24 to see the park’s impressive petroglyph figures that can be appreciated along a sheer cliff that runs parallel to the highway. These figures cover several rock panels and provide a wonderful insight into Capitol Reef’s indigenous heritage.

Next, drive along the 8-mile long scenic road, where you’ll catch some of the most famous sights in the park. Then, hike to Cassidy Arch, one of the most exciting trails here and the most iconic spot for photos in the entire park!

Days 5 and 6: Bryce Canyon National Park

Bryce Canyon National Park is one of the smallest national parks in the USA, so a day and a half is plenty to see all of its highlights. Just make sure you start the day as early as possible so you can explore as much as possible and make the most out of your visit.

The highlight of Bryce Canyon are red rock hoodoos, so I recommend packing a lunch and driving the park’s own scenic road first. Feel free to stop by at some of the park’s most scenic overlooks to get a mind-boggling “trailer” of some of the best vistas Bryce Canyon has in store for you.

In the afternoon, pick a short hiking trail so you can continue exploring and getting to know the park a little better. Afterward, get ready for the most epic sunset you’ve ever seen by heading to Sunset Point, where you’ll see the sun going down and the red rock hoodoos changing colors.

Day 6 is all about getting personal with Bryce Canyon. Hoodoos are what make Bryce Canyon so special and unique, so the best way to get more personal with the park is by seeing them up close.

There’s no better way to do that than by taking on the challenge of the Queen’s Garden to Navajo Loop and Wall Street trail. As you move through quirky rock tunnels and aromatic pine forests, you’ll get the best views of the park’s distinctive sandstone hoodoos that will make you feel like you’ve walked into a completely different world!

Come evening, you can drive to Springdale, adjacent to Zion National Park to get a good night’s sleep so you can prepare for another day full of desert wonders.

Day 7: Zion National Park

Begin the day early by heading from Bryce Canyon to Zion National Park. You can start by checking out the Zion Human History Museum, which tells the story of the indigenous Paiute who once lived here. The Towers of the Virgin and Watchman, plus other famous rock formations of Zion, sit right outside the museum, so take advantage of the opportunity to visit them.

Next, your best bet is to tie your shoelaces and explore the park on foot. There are many trails here that are pretty short and gentle, so you can do several of them on the same day.

When you’re done hiking, get back in your car and drive to Kolob Canyon, the best place in the park to watch a sunset. If you want to catch the exact spot for seeing the sun go down, where you’ll get a panoramic vista of the rock formations surrounding you, go up to Timber Creek Overlook at Kolob ViewPoint. You’ll even get some glimpses of the Grand Canyon on a clear day!

If you want to extend your Zion trip visiting Angel’s Landing, be aware you’ll need a permit only available by applying in the seasonal and daily ballot system. Also be mindful of the need to catch a shuttle into the parks popular trailheads when working out your timings.

Days 8 and 9: Grand Canyon National Park

Finish off an epic desert road trip by taking on the Bright Angel Trail, a 9.5-mile-long trail that begins at the rim of the Grand Canyon at Bright Angel Lodge and goes down all the way to the Colorado River at the bottom, ending in Phantom Ranch, where you can spend the night inside the canyon before heading back the next day!

If that sounds a bit much, there are plenty of shorter trails and scenic drives to experience within the country’s most famous national park to complete your Southwest desert adventure – and several interesting stops you can make along the way from Zion National Park to Grand Canyon without needing extensive hikes.

Book well in advance if you wish to stay at any of the Grand Canyon lodges or popular camping grounds within the national park.
