If you are a fan of beautiful sights and outdoor activities, a visit to the Grand Canyon National Park is an absolute must!

The drive from San Diego to the Grand Canyon, although long, is filled with beautiful landscapes and can’t-miss sights to see. There are a couple of options as far as the route you choose to take, and depending on which you select, there are great activities and fun experiences to enjoy along the way. 

We have put together a complete guide that will provide everything you need to know about your trip from San Diego to the Grand Canyon, including the time needed for travel, route options, and an itinerary filled with fun activities and experiences that will make your trip well worth it!

How Long Will It Take To Drive From San Diego To The Grand Canyon?

The drive, if you were to have good traffic and minimal stops, would be roughly around 8.5-9 hours. Rather than making your trip a long and boring drive, we recommend taking a little extra time to enjoy the drive and make stops for fun activities and experiences along the way. 

If you break your trip up into two days, you will find you will enjoy the ride a little more. If you choose to take the more direct route (Northern via I-40) you will find yourself arriving in just under 8.5 hours, crossing through Joshua Tree National Park and the Mojave Desert. 

Comparatively, if you take the more scenic route (Southern via I-8) it will take you closer to 9.5-10 hours, and you will pass through Phoenix, Arizona. While the more direct route may be appealing, we always like to opt for the more scenic route that will provide us with additional scenery and experiences to enjoy as a family. 

If you are returning to San Diego after your adventure, you can always make the drive using one route on the way there and the other on the way back, giving you two new experiences and the opportunity to compare the two routes.

Best Time Of Year To Drive From San Diego To The Grand Canyon

Because both California and Arizona have beautiful weather nearly all year round, in our opinion, there isn’t any particular time of year that would be better than any other time weather-wise. 

However, to avoid heavy traffic and high groups of tourists at each attraction, we recommend avoiding peak times that will include large groups of families (such as summer vacation time).

Summer temperatures in Arizona can get into very high temperatures ranging from 90-100+ degrees as well, so that may be a deterrence if you are not a fan of warm temperatures.

Pro tip: While the temperatures are high and you will definitely feel the heat, California and Arizona both have very low humidity, and the dry air helps to make those high temperatures a bit more bearable.

Palm Springs & Joshua Tree National Park

Traveling the northern route will take you through the Palm Springs/Joshua Tree National Park area. The drive to Joshua Tree from San Diego is roughly 150 miles and will take you about three hours. 

Joshua Tree National Park makes for a great stopping point, putting you just under half of the way to the Grand Canyon. There are a number of excellent spots to stop and enjoy along the way as well as excellent choices for staying in the area.

Where To Stay Near Joshua Tree

Unless you are planning to camp within Joshua Tree National Park (which we highly recommend you try at some point in your lives!), then your best bet for breaking up the journey is an overnight stay in Palm Springs.

Shortly after leaving Joshua Tree, you will cross into Arizona, where you will find a number of great cities to stop and enjoy. Here are a few great stopping points along your route:

Lake Havasu City

Lake Havasu is a city in Western Arizona known for its water sports and outdoor activities. This is a great city to stop and enjoy some time outdoors, cooling off in the refreshing water. A brilliant lake vacation spot in the southwest, there are a lot of great experiences and attractions to enjoy in Lake Havasu, such as: 

• Lake Havasu State Park has sandy beaches to take in the beautiful sights and enjoy a quiet picnic lunch with your family. 

Kingman

As we mentioned previously, Kingman is a historic railroad city, so you can expect to see a lot of railroad history throughout your visit.

• Locomotive Park is another great stop to see railroad history, here they have a number of historical exhibits and trains to see. We love Locomotive Park because we get the chance to enjoy history while still being out in the beautiful weather. 

Williams

When you reach Williams, Arizona, you are in the home stretch to get to the Grand Canyon. Williams is just over an hour outside of the Grand Canyon and is considered one of the gateways to the Grand Canyon National Park. 

We find that Williams is a great last stop to round out your road trip. It makes for a great overnight stop to get some rest and start the following day, headed straight into the Grand Canyon via the Grand Canyon Railway for a unique way to experience the park. 

There are plenty of fun activities and family-friendly experiences to enjoy while you are in Williams, including the following: 

• Bearizona Wildlife Park is a drive-thru wildlife experience where guests get the opportunity to see a number of animals including wolves, bears, deer, goats, and more! The Bearizona Wildlife Park has both a drive-thru experience as well as a walk-thru experience and up-close animal encounters, including Backstage Grizzly Training and Otter feeding. We always find that a zoo/animal experience is a great family-friendly activity that we all enjoy.

Places to Stay in Williams

• Self Drive – Of course, self-driving is always an option, and if you are traveling by a standard-size vehicle, this is no problem at all. The drive will take you just over an hour, and this option provides the flexibility to stay for as short or as long as you would like and gives you full control of your visit – but be aware of the queues!

Stops Along the Southern Route – San Diego to Grand Canyon

Taking the southern route will have you traveling along the Mexico border as you make your way up through the state of Arizona, including cities such as Phoenix and Flagstaff.

Cleveland National Forest

Starting in San Diego, after just about an hour out, you will come to the Cleveland National Forest, an excellent stop to kick off your road trip. While the Forest provides beautiful accommodations because it is so early in your trip, we recommend making it a quick stop, perhaps for a couple of hours as you head toward the Grand Canyon. 

Popular activities at the Cleveland National Forest include horseback riding, hiking and biking trails and stopping in one of the numerous picnic areas for lunch.

Phoenix

Phoenix is the capital of Arizona and just under 5 hours from the Cleveland National Forest, making it the perfect stop for an overnight stay to get rested and relaxed to finish out your drive the following day.

We’d budget a couple of nights in your itinerary for Phoenix as there’s so much to see and do with kids. Some favorites include:

• The Phoenix Zoo – ranked in the top 10 zoos in the U.S.A., we highly recommend checking this out when you are in the Phoenix area. We say this every time we mention a zoo, but they are always a priority for our family because it is an activity that everyone in our family enjoys together, so we really enjoy seeing and visiting zoos that we have never been to before. 

• Papago Park is great if you are looking for some outdoor scenery and activities. Papago Park is very close to the Phoenix Zoo and as you walk some of the trails in the park, you can even catch glimpses of some of the animals at the zoo. There are plenty of trails and picnic areas throughout the park making this a great spot to enjoy quality time with your family. The views at sunset are unmatched!

• We always like to incorporate some knowledge and education into our travels and visiting places like museums and exhibits are a great way to do that. The Children’s Museum of Phoenix provides not only an educational experience for you and your little ones but fun activities as well. 

Flagstaff

Upon leaving Phoenix after about two hours you will get into Flagstaff, another city that is considered to be a gateway to the Grand Canyon, which makes it the perfect final stop on your road trip. 

Flagstaff is roughly an hour and a half from the Grand Canyon National Park so it is a great city to enjoy some local activities and then make your way to your final destination of the Grand Canyon. Here are a few activities and experiences to check out while in Flagstaff: 

• The Lowell Observatory is a science lover’s dream! At the Lowell Observatory you can see science happen right before your eyes and dive deep into the history of Space. See how telescopes have evolved over the years and get the opportunity to take part in exhibits and tours including the Lowell Tour, the Journey to Pluto Science Show, and stargazing at the Giovale Open Deck Conservatory. 

• Downtown Flagstaff is a historic town that features a number of fun things to do, sights to see, and delicious meals to enjoy at a variety of local restaurants. Take part in fun activities such as live music, local shops, and the Brewery Trail. 

• Arizona Snowbowl is a can’t miss activity if you are visiting the area in the colder months of the year. The snow season at the Arizona Snowbowl is typically from November to April with a combination of natural snowfall and man made snow. At the Arizona Snowbowl you can enjoy the mountains with fun snow activities such as skiing, snowboarding, and tubing. 

Stay in Flagstaff or Grand Canyon?

Whilst you are only an hour and a half from the South Rim entrance to the Grand Canyon at Flagstaff, we recommend to make an early start to beat the traffic; if you’re not staying in the national park itself, consider staying just outside the park in Tusayan.

Additional Tips For A Successful Road Trip From San Diego To The Grand Canyon

• California and Arizona are both states that are great for visiting throughout the entire year when it comes to weather but keep in mind that depending on the time of year and the weather conditions in the area, activities may look a little different for your trip – in both the peak of summer and winter

• Do still pack warm clothing for winter travel and be mindful some parts of the Grand Canyon South Canyon are difficult to navigate; the North Rim of the Grand Canyon is closed for winter.

• Be sure to make a note that during this road trip you will cross through multiple time zones. You will start your trip on Pacific Standard Time (PST) with your origin point being in California and as you cross into Arizona you will switch to Mountain Standard Time, pushing your clock an hour ahead so it may seem like you are losing time. In summer, there will be no time difference as Arizona does not observe Mountain Daylight Time.

• Camping spots in Joshua Tree in the winter and spring (November to May) and both lodgings and camping grounds in Grand Canyon National Parks will book up, fast! Always look to plan staying within a US national park 6-12 months in advance.

It’s about 1,300 miles from Houston to the Grand Canyon, South Rim. Different routes may add or subtract a few miles from this total, but the overall driving distance is approximately the same.

Best Stops on a Houston to Grand Canyon Road Trip 

The two main routes from Houston to the Grand Canyon are north on I-40 or slightly farther south on I-10. I-40 is usually picked since you’ll pass through Albuquerque, but for those who have already visited Albuquerque or if you like the idea of venturing closer to the Mexican border and including Big Bend, then the I-10 route is a good option. 

The drives are about the same in terms of length, and we’ve highlighted some spots along both routes so you can make the most of your drive from Houston to the Grand Canyon. 

Houston to Grand Canyon: On the I-40 Route 

If you take the northern route from Houston to the Grand Canyon along I-40, here are some of the parks and cities worth visiting along the way. 

Fort Worth, TX

On the surface, Fort Worth is a fun and modern city, but you’ll also discover a fascinating historical side. 

Once a trading post on the Chisolm Trail, you can now take a step back into the past at the National Cowgirl Museum or learn about early pioneers at the Fort Worth Hall of Fame. Kids will especially enjoy seeing the twice-daily cattle drive! 

About four hours from Houston, Fort Worth makes a great first stop on your drive to the Grand Canyon.

Amarillo, TX

With an authentic Wild West feel, Amarillo has some cool historic landmarks tastefully combined with a sophisticated modern feel. It’s one of the best stops along the Historic Route 66, and has a bit of everything from upscale dining venues to cowboy adventures. 

It’s not a bad idea to spend a few nights in Amarillo during your drive from Houston to the Grand Canyon. 

This city is the gateway to Palo Duro Canyon, the second-longest canyon in the United States. Just because you’re seeing the Grand Canyon doesn’t mean you should pass up Palo Duro! Plus, it’s usually less crowded than the Grand Canyon, so you can enjoy a more natural experience. 

Cadillac Ranch is another iconic site in Amarillo. These ten painted and decorated Cadillacs have turned into a permanent installation of desert art and have been featured in a number of movies and music videos. It’s a great place to get some photos of your Southwest road trip and one of the most unique places to visit in Texas!

Tucumari and Route 66 Monument, NM

As you drive along Route 66, you’ll want to stop at the Route 66 Monument and Route 66 Museum located in Tucumcari, New Mexico. 

The museum is fascinating to learn about the origins of this famous road trip in the Southwest, plus there are some awesome classic cars on display that both kids and adults will enjoy! 

If you have more time to spend in Tucumari, you might also want to take a driving tour of the city to spot all the amazing murals (over 40 in total) which decorate many of the buildings. There are a few motor inns making it worthy of an overnight stop. 

On your way out of town, be sure to stop for some unique souvenirs at Tee Pee Curios to commemorate your drive along Route 66.

Albuquerque

Visiting Albuquerque could be an entire trip in itself, so it’s worth setting some time aside to explore this city as you make your way from Houston to the Grand Canyon. 

Unless you’re afraid of heights, everyone should try going on one of the famous hot air balloon rides over the city for some stunning views of the desert landscape. 

Back on the ground, there’s, even more, to explore at the Albuquerque Zoo, which is a popular attraction for families, or the Petroglyph National Monument, where you can learn about the fascinating prehistory of the region. 

Albuquerque has a great combination of modern style and historic charm. You’ll feel like you’ve stepped between worlds as you make your way between the fascinating Old Town, filled with adobe buildings dating back to the city’s founding in 1706 to the upscale shops and restaurants of the vibrant downtown area.

Petrified Forest National Park

Although it’s not as well-known as some national parks, Petrified Forest offers a unique experience that will probably surprise you. 

This is the only national park directly on Route 66, and it’s well worth a stop as you make your way from Houston to the Grand Canyon. 

The unique landscape of the park is covered in colorful remains of petrified wood and encompasses some areas of the Painted Desert of Arizona. Just driving through the park itself will give you an appreciation for the amazing landscape, and there are some great overlooks along the way which are perfect for photographs. 

If you have a bit more time, you can get out to hike some of the trails or stop by the Painted Desert Visitor Center, which has some of the fossils discovered in the Petrified Forest. 

Note that there is no camping permitted of any sort in Petrified Forest National Park. You’ll want to look at options in Holbrook as your nearest town of size.

Meteor Crater National Landmark

The enormous Meteor Crater about 40 miles east of Flagstaff is one of the most incredible landmarks in the United States, especially considering its truly out-of-this-world formation! 

Almost a mile wide and about 550 feet deep, it’s hard to imagine the catastrophic impact this meteor had when it crashed into the Earth about 50,000 years ago. Scientists estimate that the explosion would have been more devastating than an atomic bomb. 

It’s definitely worth getting tickets so you can walk right to the edge of the crater to appreciate the impressive size for yourself. Kids will also love visiting the Discovery Center & Space Museum, which has fun interactive experiences, including a 4D immersive theater!

You could press on through to the Grand Canyon from here, but we’d recommend you stay in nearby Winslow overnight or head on to Flagstaff before completing your Grand Canyon road trip.

Before we dive into your end destination, let’s see where you can stop on the more southern route, before reaching Flagstaff.

Houston to Grand Canyon: On the I-10 W Route

Taking the southern I-10 route while driving from Houston to the Grand Canyon will give you a chance to see some of the impressive landscape of the Southwest. The downside, there are some much longer driving distances and fewer accommodation options en route.

Nonetheless, those up for a unique adventure, here are a few of the top places to stop along this scenic drive to the Grand Canyon from Texas: 

San Antonio

With a great combination of museums, delicious Tex-Mex cuisine, and fun outdoor activities, San Antonio is a perfect place to stop for an afternoon on your drive from Houston to the Grand Canyon. 

Visit the famous Alamo site to learn about the history which makes San Antonio stand out in U.S. history. Afterward, explore the River Walk, where you can see other historic buildings, and find a restaurant to refuel before you continue your drive.

Big Bend National Park

If you’re on a road trip from Houston to the Grand Canyon, it’s not a bad idea to set some time aside to explore other national parks along the way. In terms of scenic national parks, Big Bend definitely ranks high on the list!  

This stunning park in southwest Texas combines the craggy landscape of the Chisos Mountains with the rugged beauty of the Chihuahuan Desert. 

It’s well worth camping or spending a few nights in one of the nearby lodges to hike and explore the cliffs of Santa Elena Canyon or relax and rejuvenate in the natural thermal hot springs in the park.

Gila National Forest

Another treasure of the Southwest that’s worth visiting on your drive from Houston to the Grand Canyon is Gila National Forest. 

There are endless opportunities for hiking the trails to get views of Whitewater Canyon and the rugged desert mountain scenery. Gila National Forest is actually New Mexico’s first designated wilderness area and covers almost 3.3 million acres! 

New Mexico is already famous for its beautiful night sky, but there might not be a better place for stargazing than at the Cosmic Campground in Gila National Forest, which is designated an International Dark Sky Sanctuary! 

Other attractions of this wilderness area include natural hot springs, horse-back riding tours of the mountains, and amazing swimming holes located in some of the canyons. 

Pro Tip: There aren’t any major cities near Gila National Forest, so if you’re hoping to spend a day or two here on your trip from Houston to the Grand Canyon, your best options are camping or staying at one of the lodges near the wilderness area.

Flagstaff

Not far from the Grand Canyon itself, Flagstaff is one of the top cities to visit along the famous Route 66. 

The city has a combination of outdoor activities, historic landmarks, and modern flare. It’s also a certified dark sky city and is a popular place for astronomers and night-sky enthusiasts. 

Visit the Lowell Observatory and learn about the discovery of Pluto, which happened right in Flagstaff! 

Thanks to its elevation, Flagstaff has cooler temperatures than other places in Arizona, and outdoor activities include hiking and swimming in the summer or skiing at the Arizona Snowbowl in the winter. 

It’s also a great base to explore some of the historic sites of the Southwest, such as the ancient pueblos and cliff dwellings of early Native American tribes who lived in the area. 

Search Accommodation Options In Flagstaff

The South Rim entrance to the Grand Canyon is only about an hour and a half away from Flagstaff, and there are numerous guided tours that depart from the city. 

Where To Stay Visiting Grand Canyon

Many choose to stay in Flagstaff and then day trip into the Grand Canyon, though be warned, if you’re doing this, you want to set off super early or later in the afternoon as the queues from around 9:00 AM onwards are LOOOOOONG!

If you weren’t quick enough with a national parks lodge booking, a better option is to stay in Tusayan, just outside the South Entrance. There’s a reasonable range of affordable hotels, motels, and RV Parks here, putting you at the gateway to the greatest natural wonder in the United States.

More Tips for Road Tripping from Houston to the Grand Canyon 

Note that this US road trip itinerary will see you crossing several time zones! Texas follows CST/CDT, New Mexico follows MST/MDT, whilst Arizona stays in MST year round; so in summer, you’ll be winding your clocks back twice!

Keep in mind that nighttime temperatures in the Southwest can get cold even in the summer. Make sure you pack some warm clothes, especially if you plan on camping. 

Always make sure you have enough water during hikes; dehydration can become an issue, so fill up extra water bottles before setting out on an outdoor adventure. 

Make reservations for accommodations well in advance, especially if you’re traveling during peak tourist season. Campgrounds, lodges, and hotels around the Grand Canyon and other national and state parks will fill up quickly.

Sensational stops to make driving from Colorado to Arizona

The Grand Canyon is the gem of the southwestern United States and a popular spot for hikers, family vacations, and photographers. While it is possible to fly (st least part of the way!), driving to the Grand Canyon can be a better option since it allows you the opportunity to visit other parks and natural wonders along the way! 

If you’re planning on driving from Denver to the Grand Canyon, there are some spots you definitely won’t want to pass up.

To help you plan your trip and give you tips for success, we’ve put together this Denver to Grand Canyon road trip guide that covers all the bases for an incredible adventure.  

Distance From Denver To The Grand Canyon

It’s between 700 and 800 miles from Denver to the Grand Canyon depending on if you are going to the North or South Rim. 

How Long Do I Need Driving From Denver To The Grand Canyon? 

Driving directly from Denver to the Grand Canyon would take about 12 hours with good traffic and few stops. 

We’d definitely recommend breaking up the trip into at least three days of driving, but it would be easy to spend a week or more traveling depending on how much time you want to spend at the other National Parks along the way. 

The drive from Denver to the Grand Canyon will take you past all of Utah’s Mighty 5 National Parks, each of which could practically be an entire trip in themselves if you wanted!

Best Time Of Year To Drive From Denver To The Grand Canyon

Spring and fall are usually the best times to drive from Denver to the Grand Canyon. Summers in Arizona can be very hot, not to mention all the tourist crowds which come to visit the Grand Canyon during this time. 

It’s also entirely possible to take a Denver to Grand Canyon road trip in winter. You’ll need to deal with snowy weather on the northern portion of your trip, but winters in the Grand Canyon (South Rim) tend to be mild and much more peaceful, thanks to the lack of visitors during this season. 

Best Stops On A Denver To Grand Canyon Road Trip

To make the most of your experience driving from Denver to the Grand Canyon, here are some of the National Parks and other natural wonders you won’t want to pass up along the way!  

Glenwood Springs and the Rocky Mountains, Colorado

Heading southwest from Denver will bring you through some of the rugged and beautiful landscapes of the Rocky Mountains. One of the best places to stop is Glenwood Springs, known for its incredible natural thermal springs. 

It’s between a two to three-hour drive to reach the springs from Denver, and even though it might not be a long ride, you won’t want to pass up the chance to soak in the Iron Mountain Hot Springs. 

To appreciate the scenery and some of the trails through the Rocky Mountains, it’s not a bad idea to stay at least a night either at one of the hotels or lodges, or there are also campgrounds for a more rough and wild adventure.

Grand Junction and Wine Tasting, Colorado

Leaving behind the incredible mountain views behind you on your Denver to Grand Canyon road trip, you’ll pass through some of Colorado’s prime wine country. 

Even if you’re pressed for time, it’s still totally manageable to fit in an afternoon visit to a winery and grab lunch at one of the excellent local restaurants. 

If you have time to stop for longer, Grand Junction is a great place to explore the red rock country and canyons of the area. Outdoor activities range from horse-back riding and river rafting in summer to skiing and snowshoeing in winter so there’s always something fun to explore.

Arches National Park, Utah

The first of Utah’s Mighty 5 to visit on your road trip from Denver to the Grand Canyon is Arches National Park. 

Where the red rock spires and towers meet the clear blue sky, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into another world. 

It’s home to some of the most iconic natural formations in the United States, so be sure to pack your camera! With over 2,000 naturally occurring stone arches, you won’t need to worry about finding picturesque spots for photographs. 

Keep in mind that Arches National Park operates on a timed entry ticket format April to October, and booking for tickets begins three months in advance. To make sure you have the opportunity to visit the arches, plan ahead to have your ticket ready. 

We’d also recommend trying to visit the park either earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon. Not only will you miss the majority of the tourist crowds, but you’ll also get to experience the spectacular dawn or evening lights illuminating the surreal landscape.

Accommodation in Moab

Moab places you within easy reach of both Arches and Canyonlands National Parks and is a good rest stop on this Denver to Grand Canyon itinerary. Whether it’s luxury glamping or an easy motor inn you’re after, you can search for availability here:

Canyonlands National Park, Utah

Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or traveling with young children, there are plenty of trails in Canyonlands to fit your needs. Hikes can be as short as half an hour or as long as several days, depending on your interests. 

Pro Tip: Families with youngsters will want to make a stop at the nearby dinosaur museum located close to where Highway 191 meets Highway 313. Here, you can learn about some of the fossil discoveries made in this area of Utah.

If you are looking to fast-track your journey to the Grand Canyon from Denver, then continue on after Canyonlands along the US I-90 S / US-160W, and you’ll make it to Grand Canyon Village in around 6 hours.

Capitol Reef National Park. Utah

Other must-visit places include the Petroglyphs Panel, where you can see some of the figures painted on the rocks by historic civilizations, Hickman Bridge which is known for its spectacular views, and the iconic Cassidy Arch Trail. 

For families, the Ripple Rock Nature Center, close to the Visitor Center, is also a great place to visit with fun, kid-friendly activities and displays.  

Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah

Bryce Canyon is best known for the hoodoo rock formations found here. These strange, spire-shaped red-rock structures give the landscape an other-worldly feel and set this park apart from the other parks in Utah’s Mighty 5. Some of the hoodoos can reach up to 150 feet high! 

The hiking trails of the park are the best way to see the hoodoos and canyons. Some of the top hikes are the Navajo Loop trail, which takes about two hours to complete, and the Rim Trail, where you’ll have a bird’s eye view of the largest concentration of hoodoos in the park. 

We’d recommend spending at least one night in Bryce Canyon on your road trip from Denver to the Grand Canyon, even if it’s just for the incredible view of the night sky! Bryce Canyon is certified as a Dark Sky Park, and the incredible air quality will give you some of the clearest night sky views in the entire United States. 

Zion National Park, Utah

Rounding off Utah’s Mighty 5 is Zion National Park, known for its 2,000-foot-deep canyon and rainbow-layered sandstone cliffs. 

Any road trip from Denver to the Grand Canyon wouldn’t be complete without the inclusion of the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive. Although it’s only six miles long, this route takes you through the heart of Zion and the incredible vistas the canyon offers. 

However, the drive is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Zion, and we’d recommend setting aside at least a day or two to explore the park. There are plenty of hiking trails ranging from easy to strenuous. These hikes will bring you to spectacular canyon waterfalls, amazing swimming holes surrounded by towering sandstone walls, and jaw-dropping vistas. 

Zion is also a world-famous rock-climbing destination. Even if scaling canyon walls isn’t your idea of fun, it’s still incredible to see the climbers making their way up these sheer cliff faces. 

If you have a bit more time, we’d also recommend checking out the Kolob Canyons, which are located on the northwest side of the park. Known as the “wild side” of Zion, there are fewer visitors in this area and some amazing natural wonders including the 287-foot-long Kolob Arch.

Hikers be aware, if you want to take on the famous Angel’s Landing Trail, you’ll need to enter a seasonal ballot to secure your spot.

Horseshoe Bend, Arizona

One of the most iconic sites along the Colorado River, Horseshoe Bend is a must-visit stop along the drive from Denver to the Grand Canyon. 

At minimum you should at least walk to the overlook (less than a mile of hiking) to get some photographs of this stunning circular bend in the river. If you have more time, you can make a full day out of the experience by going on a river rafting trip or taking a helicopter tour over the canyon for some truly stunning views. 

Antelope Canyon, Arizona

Before you round off your trip and begin exploring the Grand Canyon National Park, one more stop you’ll want to make is at Arizona’s famous Antelope Canyon. 

This spectacular canyon is one of America’s most photographed sites. Once you see it for yourself, you’ll have no problem understanding why! 

Since Antelope Canyon is part of protected Navajo land, the only way to visit it is by guided tour. Keep in mind that tours fill up very quickly, especially during the summer, so you’ll want to reserve your spot well in beforehand so you’ll have a chance to see the incredible curves and bends of the sandstone canyon. 

Grand Canyon North Rim, Arizona 

Pro Tip: Keep in mind that the North Rim is only open between May and October, while the South Rim of the Grand Canyon is open year-round.

Itinerary Variations Denver to Grand Canyon & Return

As we mentioned above, a shortcut you could take is to head south from Moab and Canyonlands down the US I-90. If you’re taking this route, we’d also recommend making a stop at Monument Valley.

This 17-mile loop road on Navajo Land between Utah and Arizona is one of the most truly fascinating desert-scapes in the country, only a small detour off your route.

Alternatively, skip Moab on your way out. Head to the more westerly of the Utah Mighty 5 first, drop down into Arizona from Zion. After your visit to the Grand Canyon, take the scenic Monument Valley/Moab route on your return.

Two of the most popular national parks in the United States, Zion National Park, and Grand Canyon National Park, are natural wonders that you don’t want to pass up on!

Starting the road trip is Zion National Park, renowned for its towering sandstone cliffs favored by rock climbers all over the world. The park has one of the biggest free-standing arches in the world, the Kolob Arch, stretching more than 287 feet.

Resting on the other end is Grand Canyon National Park, one of the world’s seven natural wonders. It is the largest canyon in the world, and one of the best examples of arid-land erosion found on the planet.

Distance From Zion National Park To Grand Canyon

The distance from Zion National Park to Grand Canyon’s North Rim is 110 miles, which takes about two hours, give or take. However, if you plan on driving straight from Zion National Park to Grand Canyon’s South Rim, this spans about 255 miles, with almost five hours to complete. 

The Grand Canyon’s North and South Rims are only ten miles apart, but it takes five hours to drive from one end to the other. There is a noticeable difference between the vegetation and even climate between the two rims, making it appear as if you’re visiting two different parks on one trip!

The most common route from Zion National Park to Grand Canyon’s North Rim is to take Highway 9 east out of the park to Highway 89A or Highway 89 in Kanab, about 30 minutes from Zion National Park’s east entrance. 

Use the Highway 89A path for a more direct and scenic path to the North Rim entrance of Grand Canyon National Park, where Highway 89A will connect with SR-67 to reach the North Rim. After exploring the North Rim, take SR-67 to reach Highway 89A, turning right and following the path until Highway 89A connects with Highway 89. Then, follow Highway 89 until you reach SR-64 to the South Rim entrance of Grand Canyon National Park. 

How Long do I Need Driving Zion National Park to Grand Canyon

You should plan for at least 2-4 days to get the most out of a road trip from Zion National Park to the Grand Canyon’s North and South Rim. 

A nonstop road trip to Grand Canyon’s North Rim will only require a day. However, if you plan to head to Grand Canyon’s South Rim without any stops on the way to both rims, you’ll need at least two days to spend at both. 

Best Time of Year to Drive from Zion National Park to Grand Canyon

The best time of year, hands down, to take a road trip from Zion National Park to Grand Canyon National Park is in the spring or the fall.

The summer is the busiest time of year for Zion National Park and Grand Canyon National Park when all the kids are out of school and rearing to explore the world with their parents and friends. The summer is all the hottest at these parks, and it can be pretty grueling to spend outdoors in the hot sun. 

It’s best to avoid traveling to the parks during the winter season. Zion National Park and Grand Canyon National Park get snow, making the roads icy and possibly dangerous. Visiting Grand Canyon National Park North Rim is impossible during the winter as all the roads, restaurants, and other nearby accommodations are closed for the season. 

The spring and fall seasons are a great go-between the extremely hot and cold temperatures. During the fall season, eye-catching, vibrant fall colors decorate the trees and cooler temperatures to enjoy the great outdoors. 

Utah does have a monsoon season in the late summer and early fall months, which can bring flash floods and harsh rains. Therefore, keeping up to date with the weather reports is crucial to avoid potential dangers while driving and exploring.

Best Stops on a Zion National Park to Grand Canyon Road Trip

Zion National Park

The first national park of Utah, Zion National Park, holds geological and historical value—the place where native people and pioneers once traversed.

The impressive towering sandstone cliffs of the park combine stunning colors of pinks, reds, and creams, paired with diverse species of animals and plants. Zion National Park is famous for its large canyon, Zion Canyon, with exceptional opportunities for visitors to hike along the canyon’s floor, known as The Narrows.

The park is also known for its natural rock arches, such as the Kolob, the Hidden Arch, and the Crawford. Many of these favored rock formations can be seen from great distances thanks to their imposing heights. 

Explore adventurous outdoor activities at Zion National Park, including climbing, camping, hiking, and swimming.

Consider camping with the family at one of the three available campgrounds at Zion National Park. The South Campground is closed during the winter while Watchman Campground is open year-round. And Lava Point Campground is an hour’s drive from the park, located on Kolob Terrace Road, which is also closed during the winter. 

Moqui Cave

Located in Southern Utah, less than six miles north of Kanab and less than one mile from the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, the Moqui Cave is a historic landmark and natural history museum. This impactful attraction preserves and features Native American artifacts and dinosaur tracks. 

Within Moqui Cave is an impressive collection of Native American artifacts, minerals, and fluorescent rocks sourced from around the planet, pre-Columbian artifacts from Mexico, and so much more! 

Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park

A must-stop on your Zion to Grand Canyon North Rim road trip, Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park is an adventure full of sand and fun—perfect for the family! 

Some of the most popular activities at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park include sandboarding, sand sledding, ATVing, and hiking its expansive open landscapes. Catching the invigorating thrill of sandboarding or sand sledding down the tall sand dunes makes for an unforgettable memory made with the family.

The visitor center at the park rents out sleds and boards for everyone to try their hand at riding down the sand dunes at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park.

Important Note: Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park has little shade. Make sure to bring plenty of water and wear sunscreen! 

Kanab, Utah

A small town and hub spot for people traveling between the national parks, Kanab is full of hidden gems worth stopping to ponder over. 

The self-proclaimed “Little Hollywood,” Kanab, has been used as a filming location for more than a few films thanks to its classic American West vibe. You’ll note the different abandoned film sets throughout the town now set up as quirky tourist attractions. The Little Hollywood Museum is one of them. Plus, it’s free to visit! 

In February, Kanab hosts a three-day festival that features the Battle of the Bands competition, a balloon glow and lantern launch, and a street fair. All within view of the iconic red rock formations of the area as 40+ hot air balloons drift into the sky. 

Le Fevre Overlook

Make a quick stop at Le Fevre Overlook for breathtaking views of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, an expansive sequence of sedimentary rock layers that reach from Bryce Canyon National Park to Zion National Park and Grand Canyon National Park.

Le Fevre Overlook offers a massive set of standing binoculars to view the monument’s geological features. 

Jacob Lake (+ Accommodations)

A tranquil area located in the North Kaibab National Forest, Jacob Lake is a town and recreation area to stop at and even lodge between heading to or leaving the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. 

The recreation area of Jacob Lake features a peaceful lake encompassed by towering ponderosa pines. Nearby are a campground, restaurant, store, lodge, and numerous trails to go hiking or biking in the thriving forest. Many travelers will choose to stay in Jacob Lake as Grand Canyon National Park tends to have little lodging availability. 

We recommend packing some snacks (don’t forget the cutlery!) to settle down for a picnic surrounded by the natural beauty of Kaibab National Forest. 

Accommodations: Grand Canyon’s North Rim is pretty remote, so there aren’t many options to choose from to stay the night. Jacob Lake Inn is a family-owned and operated business that offers a rustic, comfortable setting perfect for a road trip from Zion to Grand Canyon National Park. 

The inn is a 44-mile drive, full of spectacular scenery, from the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Tall pines of the Kaibab National Forest surround Jacob Lake Inn, with nearby activities to fish at the Colorado River, sightseeing, hiking, and more!  

Grand Canyon National Park (North Rim)

At a higher elevation than the South Rim, Grand Canyon National Park’s North Rim is more than 8,000 feet above sea level (the South Rim is 7,200 feet). Due to its higher elevation, the North Rim has cooler temperatures year-round.

Though the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park tends to attract more visitors because of the North Rim’s remoteness and closure during the winter, the North Rim offers more pleasant temperatures, picturesque landscapes, and a calming atmosphere to sink into.

Bright Angel Point is one such place to witness these breathtaking views. Found at the Visitor Center, close to the campground and Grand Canyon Lodge, Bright Angel Point is a notorious spot for its glorious sunset and sunrises.

Important Note: The North Rim of the Grand Canyon is only open seasonally, from May 15-October 15. 

Antelope Canyon

Protected by the Navajo Parks and Recreation within Navajo Nation, Antelope Canyon is a world-famous slot canyon that can only be accessed by reserving a tour. 

Antelope Canyon was shaped by millions of years of wind and water erosion. Named after the herds of pronghorn antelope that roamed the area once upon a time, the slot canyon is notorious for its picturesque sights and hiking opportunities.

Horseshoe Bend

A world-renowned natural landmark, Horseshoe Bend visualizes the shape of a horseshoe made of a range of red and orange-colored rocks. A river flows through the horseshoe shape, cutting out the massive boulder, an example of wind’s erosion through time.

Grand Canyon National Park (South Rim)

There’s so much waiting to be explored at the South Rim, including skydiving, helicopter rides, hiking, train rides, and many more fun-filled activities. Head to the Desert View Watchtower for some of the most outstanding views seen within the park.

Located on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, Bright Angel Lodge & Cabins is a registered National Historic Landmark boasting a rich cultural history. The lodge and its featured cabins offer a step back into its origins, dating back to the early 1900s. 

An alternative is to look just outside of the South Entrance at Tusayan for more family-friendly accommodation options and camping and RV parks if lodgings inside the national park are fully booked.

There’s no more spectacular and recognizable natural landmark in the US than the Grand Canyon. A visit to the Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona’s northwestern region can be a family trip of a lifetime. 

The national park encompasses stunning canyons and beautiful Colorado River tributaries. The Grand Canyon was declared a National Monument in 1908 by Theodore Roosevelt and subsequently given National Park status in 1919. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Listed site and one of the seven natural wonders of the world.  

Need To Know Before Visiting The Grand Canyon 

The Grand Canyon is one of the country’s most popular nature spots, but given the sheer size of the national park and its enduring popularity, it’s undoubtedly a family road trip that needs a little bit of pre-planning. Maybe not the degree of planning as a Disney World vacation, but you do need to book well in advance for your preferred choice of dates and accommodation. 

Understanding The Size And Scale Of The Grand Canyon 

It is important to note when planning to visit the Grand Canyon with kids that there are multiple ways to enter and experience this natural wonder.  

The Grand Canyon is split up into four distinct sections. Two of these sections fall within Grand Canyon National Park and are accessed in very different directions, the South Rim and the North Rim.  

Due to its higher altitude (over 1000 ft higher than the southern part of the national park), you’ll find the North Rim is only open from May to mid-October (or the first snowfall) due to inclement weather closing roads, whilst the South Rim is open 24 hours, year-round.  

Grand Canyon East Rim is located to the northeast and is known for bringing guests closer to the Little Colorado River and the Glen Canyon Recreation Area, bordering southern Utah.   

Grand Canyon West Rim falls within the Hualapai Indian Reservation. It is most famously home to the Grand Canyon Skywalk (more below!). 

We will larger be referring in this article to attractions and features of the Grand Canyon that fall within the Grand Canyon National Park, but bear in mind there are other sections you can visit that do not require a national parks pass (though other entry fees may apply). 

Entry Permits For Grand Canyon National Park 

• A singular vehicle permit is $35, valid for 7 consecutive days from purchase.  
• You can also purchase motorcycle permits for $30 or individual permits are $20. 
• Alternatively, if you’ll be visiting a few national parks in the next 12 months, invest in an America the Beautiful Pass, just $80 per year, or see if you’ve got a family member eligible for the 4^th Grader Pass– Every Kid Outdoors.  
• Purchasing your entry pass in advance will save you time at the entrance! 
• At present, there’s no timed entry permit required to Grand Canyon National Park, but we can certainly see this changing in the future if crowd numbers continue.  

Getting To The Grand Canyon 

The Grand Canyon, in the northwestern corner of Arizona, is not readily accessible from any major city by public transport. Accordingly, you will need to organize a tour or your own transportation.

The closest large international airport to Grand Canyon National Park is Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. This airport is just over 3.5 hours from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.  You can also enter from airports in Flagstaff or Sedona, but these are much smaller airports. 

Alternatively, many visitors, particularly to the West Rim, will commence their journey in Las Vegas.

The south entrance is about 2 miles north of Tusayan on the SR64. It is the closest entrance to Grand Canyon Village, where you’ll find some of the best viewpoints and major facilities in the park. 

Closest Towns To Grand Canyon Village

To help you calculate your journey times, these are distances to Grand Canyon Village:

• Williams, AZ – 59 miles (1 hour 15 minutes) 
• Flagstaff, AZ – 79 miles (1 hour 45 minutes) 
• Sedona, AZ – 114 miles  (2 hours 5 minutes)
• Kingman, AZ – 172 miles (2 hours 45 minutes) 
• Phoenix, AZ – 228 miles (3 hours 40 minutes) 
• Las Vegas, NV – 280 miles (4 hours 25 minutes)

Enter From The East – Desert View Road 

The eastern entrance to the South Rim of the national park is called Desert View Road. Fewer cars enter from this side, and it makes the ideal starting point if you’re setting out from the north, such as visiting Zion or Bryce National Parks in Utah first, or coming from Monument Valley will be the most logical entry point.  

NB Although open year-round, Desert View Road can occasionally be closed in winter months due to heavy snowfall or icy conditions. Check conditions here before setting out.  

Rim-to-Rim: Grand Canyon South Rim to North Rim

If you wish to travel between Grand Canyon Village, South Rim, and North Rim, bear in mind, it is over 200 miles and around a 4-hour journey. You can take the Desert View Road to exit the South Rim side of the national park and US89 north, then US89A west to reach the North Rim entrance.

Important Tips on Entry to the Grand Canyon South Entrance 

With popularity comes queues; even off-peak, you can find huge queues build up at the park’s South Entrance, but there are a few ways you can beat the crowds: 

• Travel off-peak – easier said than done if you’re restricted with school breaks. Generally, spring break is less crowded than winter or summer and brings with it milder weather that’s good for hiking and outdoor activities.  
• Stay in the national park – visitors staying at one of the national park lodges or campsites, although often rustic, can take advantage of their position starting within the park to bat the morning rush.  
• Stay nearby and go early – the early bird gets the best parking spots, fewer crowds, and beats the midday heat if you have longer hikes planned. The town of Tusayan is just a couple of miles from the entrance of the park, or try nearby Williams for more choices in accommodation and a shorter drive to start the day. We’d recommend getting in before 8 AM. Between 9-10 AM is when the queues really start to form. 
• Use the Desert View Road entrance – sure, it might add 40 or so minutes to your journey if you are approaching the national park from the south, but it beats sitting in a queue for 2 hours, right? Plus, there’s plenty to see along this South Rim scenic route – more below!   
• Use the Tusayan Route Shuttle – Got your park permit already? Your group can travel in the free shuttle and skip the queue at the entrance gate, traveling directly to the Grand Canyon Visitor Center, then use the parks shuttle service to get around (summer only).  
• Take the train! – did you know there’s a vintage train service that runs from nearby Williams and into the heart of the park at Bright Angel Lodge – more below!  
• Take a helicopter – if you want to skip the traffic altogether, why not splurge on a scenic helicopter ride? Undoubtedly a trip of a lifetime!   

How Many Days Do You Need At The Grand Canyon? 

Anytime at Grand Canyon National Park will be amazing – in fact, it’s even possible to fit in a visit to the South Rim on a day trip from Las Vegas – but a minimum of 3 days is recommended to enjoy the many amazing activities and spectacular hikes we’ll be describing here.

When To Visit The Grand Canyon 

When we say off-peak, it can be a little bit of a misnomer for such a busy park. Understandably, the South Rim is busiest at peak school breaks, summer and winter, and spring break. If you are tied to travel only in school breaks, spring brings the most pleasant weather and fewer crowds than summer. 

Think about the times of day and week too. It gets busier after 9 am, with crowds peaking everywhere in the middle of the day, and weekends are always busier.  

If you’re thinking of attending on the designated free national park entry days, good luck. Only the patient (or very brave!) will attempt this!   

Winter can still be surprisingly busy, particularly during the popular Christmas to New Year period but comes with the disadvantage storms can hit, and unexpected road closures may hamper your journey. Don’t forget ice on the shaded trails can be difficult to deal with too.  

What To Pack for Your Grand Canyon Family Trip 

This will depend a little on your season. In addition to our road trip essentials to keep you going through the journey, we suggest you also bring:  

• A refillable bottle or hydration pack (take advantage of refill stations spotted around the park) 
• Hats, sunscreen, and sunglasses

Things To Do At Grand Canyon National Park 

Here’s what we suggest you have on your itinerary for the park – noting you don’t have to start at the visitor center; you can tackle the key attractions in any order!

If you can, park your car at the Grand Canyon visitor center and take shuttles within the park, it will ease congestion and parking panic within the national park

Exploring Grand Canyon South Rim 

We’ll start with the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, as it is by far the most popular part of the park. The fact that it’s year-round open means that those visiting in the winter can only visit the South Rim, but there is so much to do and see at the South Rim. 

Hiking The South Rim 

The Grand Canyon National Park has some great options for hiking. Whether you are seeking something short and easy for little legs or those with limited mobility, or a much longer challenge for experienced hikers, there’s a little something for everyone to be found in the South Rim section of the park.  

Grand Canyon Rim Trail: Mules To Mather Point 

• Distance: 6 miles 
• Elevation Gain: 413 ft 
• Rating: Easy 

The entire rim trail stretches from the South Kaibab Trail to Hermit’s Rest and is 13 miles long. This is a great trail for all skill levels, as it’s mostly paved and lined. This dog-friendly stretch offers spectacular views of the South Rim. 

Grand Canyon Rim Trail 

• Distance: 12.7 miles 
• Elevation Gain: 583 ft 
• Rating: Easy 

This dog-friendly trail takes you around the entire South Rim in an easy 12.7 miles. This easy trail is great for all skill levels and is paved. You’ll notice markers telling you how far you’ve traveled both in feet and in years. This easy walk provides stunning views of the South Rim, and there are several shuttle bus stops along the trail, so you don’t need to complete the whole thing.  

Bright Angel Trail 

• Distance: 15.3 miles 
• Elevation Gain: 4,478 ft 
• Rating: Difficult 

For a day hike, you can’t beat the Bright Angel Trail, which drops in the canyon right at the village, making it an incredibly convenient hike. This hike is not for the faint of heart, with a rating of difficult at 15.3 miles.  

Note for smaller legs; there are rest houses located a mile and a half and three miles below the rim if you need turn-around points. We’d highly recommend you avoid these during the peak heat of the day. 

NB before you think of hiking down and back with the kids- remember it’s about 4 hours down and 6 to 8 hours back up. Plan wisely! 

South Kaibab Trail 

• Distance: 2.8 miles 
• Elevation Gain: 1,102 ft 
• Rating: Moderate  

The South Kaibab Trail is another popular south rim trail that begins at Yaki Point. It is a day hike to the mule-hitching post of Cedar Ridge. Be prepared because this trail offers very little shade, no water, and a steep incline. In the winter and early spring, it can also become incredibly icy.  

The South Kaibab Trail is also the quickest way to the bottom of the canyon.  Ooh Aah Point is a popular stopping point. It takes about 30-40 minutes down – add 50% more time for the climb back! 

Bike The Rim 

If hiking doesn’t appeal to the kids, what about biking? The Greenway section of the Rim trail, between the Visitor Center and the South Kaibab trailhead, is paved with no vehicular traffic. Pick up your bikes for the 10-mile return journey from Bright Angel Bicycle Rentals.

You also have the option to take a shuttle, making it an easier one-way journey from Hermit Road to Hermit’s rest.  

NB the shuttle is optional in winter, but from March to the end of November, Hermit Road is closed to cars. 

Visit Yavapai Geology Museum  

Found at the South Rim, about 1.5 along the Rim Trail, this is a fascinating stop for junior geology lovers. The 3D map is a great study to put the size and grandeur into perspective.  

You can continue your journey outdoors on the interpretative path, Trail in Time.  The best part about this walk, no steep hills, and it’s stroller friendly! 

Become A Junior Ranger 

Like many US national parks, one of the best activities for kids is picking up a junior range booklet from the visitor center and completing the junior ranger activities to earn a badge. 

Also, look out for the specialized children’s ranger programs available over the summer months. 

Stop At As Many Viewpoints As Possible 

The main point of interest for most visitors to the Grand Canyon is taking in the simply epic views. These are some of the most popular viewing points within the South Rim section of the national park. 

Hopi Point 

The Hopi Point viewpoint is along the South Rim Trail and is known for being the best sunset location in the entire park. You’ll get stunning views of the Colorado River, cutting into the canyon as the sun sets. 

Desert View 

This unique viewpoint provides gorgeous views of the open canyon. The Desert Watchtower was built in 1932 and still remains on the cliff’s edge. 

Mather Point 

Mather Point is the go-to scenic viewpoint on the South Rim, and for a good reason. It’s an iconic view that is a great introduction to the absolute immensity of the Grand Canyon. 

Shoshone Point 

If you want to beat the crowds, this underrated viewpoint that provides stunning views. There’s an easy grade 20-minute walk involved to get there, but you’ll be rewarded with incredible 180-degree views of the Grand Canyon (allow 2.2 miles return). 

Boat The Colorado River 

There are two different ways to boat the Colorado River; you can either use a paddle raft or a motorized raft. The motorized rafts are immense at around 30 feet and are packed with riders, though you can take kids as young as eight years old.  

The human-propelled counterpart provides a more nature-friendly option, though due to the strenuous nature of the activity, your passengers need to be over 12.  

There are dozens of rafting companies that offer boat rides on the Colorado River. These companies offer everything from 1-day trips to 18-day epic adventures. Some of the most popular suppliers to consider are:

• Colorado River & Trail Expedition 
• Western River Expeditions 

Take A Train Ride 

For a unique way to experience the park, you can catch the vintage train that travels the Grand Canyon Railway from Williams, which is approximately 2.5 hours from Phoenix.  

The train offers several classes of carriage, from the budget-friendly Pullman to the dome-roofed first-class cabins, where snacks and drinks are included (grown-up drinks are available for purchase too!).  

More than just a train ride, there’s a pre-journey shoot-out show, live performers aboard, and on the return journey (total spoiler alert), there’s even an orchestrated heist! Probably best to be prepared in case the little ones scare easily.  

The train departs daily from Williams at 9:30 AM and arrives at the historical village in the Grand Canyon at 11:45 AM. You get three hours of free time to explore before departing at 3:30 PM, returning to Williams at 5:45 PM (one hour earlier in November and December). 

Take A Helicopter Tour 

If the budget will allow, there’s no better way to cap off your Grand Canyon National Park experience than taking a bird’s eye view on a helicopter tour. Some of the most reputable providers include:

Exploring The North Rim Of The Grand Canyon 

Entry to the North Rim – generally open May to October – can be found 30 miles south of Jacob Lake on Highway 67. You are not far here from the Utah border, so it makes the ideal addition to a Utah Mighty 5 road trip if you have an extra day to spare.  

Hiking The North Rim

There are some easy short hikes and lookouts families can tackle in the North Rim section of the park. For example, it’s only a 0.5-mile paved walk to Bright Angel Point, or try the lookout points at Point Imperial and Cape Royal scenic drive. 

For the fitter and more experienced hikers:  

Widforss Trail 

• Distance: 9.1 miles 
• Elevation Gain: 1,036 ft 
• Rating: Moderate 

The North Rim provides a completely different hiking experience than the South Rim. On the Widforss Trail, you’ll experience a blend of spectacular forest and canyon scenery. The trail was named after Gunnar Widforss, who lived at and painted the Grand Canyon in the 1930s. 

Viewpoints Scenic Drive

Allow yourself at least half a day to take in the winding drive and incredible viewpoints at Point Imperial, Walhalla Point, and Cape Royal.

Point Imperial is the highest point on the North Rim at 8,803 feet, overlooking the Painted Desert and the eastern end of the Grand Canyon.

Cape Royal is a popular point for sunrise and sunset, offering sweeping views to both the east and the west. You’ll be able to catch a glimpse of Desert View Watchtower on the South Rim.

Exploring The Grand Canyon East Rim 

Although not officially part of the national park, you’ll find the eastern portion of the Grand Canyon still has many spectacular sites that any intrepid travelers may still want to add to their bucket list. You’ll experience fewer crowds and over-tourism here. 

Here are a few points of interest you’ll want to add to your itinerary: 

Horseshoe Bend 

Probably one of the most famously photographed parts of the Colorado River, near Page, Arizona. It is found 5 miles downstream from Glen Canyon Dam. You’ll need a 1-mile walk to get to the viewing point. 

Lake Powell 

Also located in Glen Canyon Recreation Area. Although it is technically man-made as it’s a reservoir, it’s still one of the greatest natural wonders between Utah and Arizona, popular with boating enthusiasts, water skiers, fishers, and campers. 

Antelope Canyon 

Set on Navajo land, “The Corkscrew” and “The Crack” (Lower and Upper Antelope Canyon) are some of the most incredible slot canyons in the Southwest.

Lower Antelope Canyon is recommended only for experienced hikers, whilst intrepid travelers with children are permitted on tours to Upper Antelope Canyon.  

Note that you must use an authorized Navajo tour company to access these slot canyons.  

Little Colorado River Gorge 

Little it isn’t with 45 miles of a narrow gorge, 3000 feet deep at points. However, with its colorless grey stone walls, you’ll see the significant difference to the Grand Canyon. It makes the perfect scenic stop on your way to the Grand Canyon. 

There is an entry fee payable on arrival – $8 per person per day; it is NOT covered by your National Parks Pass. 

Marble Canyon 

This marks the point where the Little Colorado River tributary and the Colorado River meet. You can get a view from Navajo Bridge off Highway 89A. You can also drop into the Navajo Bridge Interpretive Center and undertake a self-guided tour across the bridge (April to October). 

Visit The Skywalk Of The West Rim 

While the West Rim of the Grand Canyon technically isn’t inside of Grand Canyon National Park, the Skywalk is a fascinating modern addition you can add to your trip to the canyon.  

The West Rim is on the tribal lands of the Hualapai, and the Skywalk itself is a horseshoe-shaped bridge with a glass bottom suspended 4,000 feet over the Colorado River. It gives you unparalleled views of the canyon below, all while helping you conquer your fear of heights. 

The Skywalk is accessible from Vegas in just 2 hours, making it a popular choice for day trippers just to glimpse the Grand Canyon. If you head directly to the West Rim from Phoenix, it is a 4-hour drive.  

Open to the public with an admission fee, starting from $66 per person including the Skywalk – prices vary depending on how you want to package your tickets, with the inclusion of meals, the Skywalk, and the Zipline possible with your West Rim entry fee.

Where To Stay Inside Grand Canyon National Park 

There are lodging options within the national park at both the South Rim and North Rim (bearing in mind seasonal closures). Remember, reservations at national park properties open a year out – you’ll want to be fast on the keyboard for popular dates. 

Important Note: Phantom Ranch is the only accommodation available at the foot of the Grand Canyon – before you get too excited, be mindful that you need to enter a lottery! Yup, up to 15 months in advance slots open; bookings are currently on hold until February 1, 2023, for stays in April 2024.

Campgrounds At The Grand Canyon

Campgrounds can be found along the north and south rims. 

• Mather Campground – reservation required 
• Trailer Village (RVs only) – reservation required 
• Desert View Campground (closed winter) – reservation and a limited number first come basis, and they fill early, so probably not ideal for families.   
• North Rim Campground – reservation required, no RV Hook up (May 15 to October 15 only)
• Backcountry permits are required for all overnight trips in Grand Canyon National Park. You can submit an application on the first day of the month five months in advance.

Most families will choose the lodge accommodation if staying within the park. We’ve summarised the available lodges here but read on for more details

South Rim Lodges 

Bright Angel Lodge 

9 Village Loop Drive, Grand Canyon, AZ 86023 

The Bright Angel Lodge is one of the most popular lodging options near the South Rim. There are 90 lodging units with free Wi-Fi access. If you choose the Bright Angel Lodge, you’ll have quick and easy access to some of the park’s most beloved hiking trails and attractions.  

You have the option between the main historic lodge and surrounding cabins. Several dining options can also be found at Bright Angel, making it a popular family choice (though note the dining options can’t be pre-booked and max 3 per room).

El Tovar Hotel 

9 Village Loop Drive, Grand Canyon, AZ 86023 

El Tovar opened in the early 1900s at the end of the railroad lines and was regarded as one of the most elegant lodges west of the Mississippi. This 78-room historic lodge offers on-site restaurant and concierge services.  

From the outside, it’s the oldest and grandest of the lodges. Inside, though, it’s fairly basic, but you’re really paying for the location – there are wonderful external views (not from most rooms), and you’re within walking distance to Rim Village. 

Most rooms sleep 2/4, but a Deluxe Queen can sleep up to 5.

Kachina Lodge

This modern lodge is right along the Grand Canyon Rim, meaning many of the rooms have partial canyon views. This 49-room lodge offers Wi-Fi, but no elevators and limited cell phone service.  

It’s perfect for those looking for beautiful views and wanting to unplug – rooms can sleep up to 4.

Thunderbird Lodge

If you’re looking for a slightly more budget-friendly option, Thunderbird Lodge is possibly the one for you.

This 55-room property is located between El Tovar and Bright Angel Lodge. Note that there are no elevators in the Thunderbird Lodge, and you’ll need to check in at the Bright Angel Lodge.  

If you’re on a budget, then this lodge is a great option for you.

Maswik Lodge 

202 Village Loop Drive, Grand Canyon Village, AZ 86023 

Another budget-friendly option to try is Maswik Lodge, nestled in the Ponderosa Pine Forest, 0.25 miles from the Canyon’s edge. The lodge gets its name from a Hopi Kachina who, legend has it, guards the Grand Canyon. 

This 280-room lodge is in a great location and is a little more budget-friendly than other lodgings in the park, from $140 per night. The hotel is divided into the older North lodge and the newer south lodge, some with kitchenettes. Double Queen rooms can sleep families of up to 5.

Yavapai Lodge 

11 Yavapai Lodge Road, Grand Canyon, AZ 86023

This is a rather basic national park lodging, around 1 mile from the South Rim, but what you lack in views you can make up for in convenience, being near the general store and other amenities (including local brews!) which makes it a preferred choice with many families.

Some rooms here can sleep up to 6, which is ideal for your larger family. The lodge is also pet-friendly.

NB, none of the lodges offer guaranteed parking on site. Consider in your plans you may need to park in overflow parking and shuttle to your lodgings.

North Rim Lodging 

Only opens seasonally, approximately mid-May to mid-October. 

Accommodation options within the national park are limited at the North Rim, with only one lodge and one campground. There are further options outside the park at Jacob Lake.

Grand Canyon Lodge 

AZ-67, North Rim, AZ 86052 

The only lodge-style accommodation at Grand Canyon North Rim is Grand Canyon Lodge. Declared a National Historic Landmark in 1987, this is a budget-friendly option that includes laundry facilities, a coffee shop, and a general store, among other amenities.  

There are options for motel-style rooms through to cabins that can sleep up to 6.

Where To Stay Near The Grand Canyon 

Also, consider staying just outside of the national park for a much wider range of accommodation options. 

Bear in mind our points above about getting into the South Entrance early, though, to beat the queues if you’re not actually staying in the national park. 

South Rim – Nearby Accommodation

• Tusayan is small but has some fast food chains and a small grocery store; you’re only about 2 miles to the South entrance.  Try The Grand Hotel at Grand Canyon or Red Feather Lodge.

• Also, outside the park, if you’re traveling with an RV, you might find your best option is Grand Canyon / Williams KOA which has both RV and tent camping available.  

• Another decent camper option is Grand Canyon Camper Village in Tusayan, open year-round and just 7 miles from South Entrance.

West Rim – Nearby Accommodation

Run by the Hualapai tribe, at Grand Canyon West, you’ll find cabins and RV parking.

Alternatively, look at Hualapai Lodge, located in Peach Springs, about 90 minutes from the West Rim, along the historic Route 66.

Where To Eat At Grand Canyon National Park 

There are plentiful meal options available within the National Park, but do bear in mind, as we’ve mentioned just a few times now, crowds!  

Only El Tovar can be reserved in advance at South Rim. The rest are first come and may not be able to seat your party (without a long wait) at meal times. Food options may also be limited toward the end of mealtimes.

South Rim Dining Options 

• Market Plaza 
• Yavapai Lodge Tavern (lunch and dinner)
• Yavapai Lodge Restaurant (breakfast and dinner)
• El Tovar Dining Room (takes reservations) 
• El Tovar Lounge (takes reservations) 
• Arizona Steakhouse

We highly recommend packing a picnic lunch if you’re traveling with kids to remove the mealtime stress. You’ll find more options if you pick these up en route at Flagstaff or Williams. It’s a good idea to have a cooler for your car and an insulated backpack for this.

North Rim Dining Options 

Family dining options at North Rima are more limited but still offer some options: 

• Grand Canyon Lodge Dining Room (breakfast, lunch, and dinner by reservation)
• Roughrider Saloon (adult drinks and coffee, cakes)
• Deli In The Pines (lunch and dinner)

Final Tips For Visiting Grand Canyon National Park 

Before setting off for your Grand Canyon road trip, you may find these final reminders helpful.  

• You’ll need to pack plenty of patience! Remembering Grand Canyon National Park is one of the most popular National Parks in the United States, and you’ll have to deal with crowds no matter what time of year you visit. 
• Make reservations well in advance (start looking 13 months out) if you want to stay inside the park.
• A shuttle service is offered within the Grand Canyon National Park to make getting around easier for guests– use it! Do allow yourselves plenty of time, though, and remember it’s first come, first on.  
• Although Grand Canyon National park permits dogs, they are not permitted below the canyon rim. They can, however, hike the trails with you. Just watch the extreme summer temperatures.  
• Whilst falling into the canyon is rare, there are many steep cliffs with no rails. You may want to consider harnesses for small children prone to wandering or infant carriers.  
• Although South Rim remains open year-round, the trails can be icy in the winter – consider your clothing choices carefully and crampons for the hiking trails. Watch for last-minute closures. 
• Sturdy trainers or closed-toe hiking sandals are a must in summer; forget the flip-flops if you’re planning any of the hikes off paved roads. 

• Don’t rely just on Google Maps! You won’t always have a cell signal; Have a downloaded version or a paper map depending on your preference for ‘just in case”
• Remember to employ all the principles of leave no trace. Stick to the trails, and do not feed the wildlife! People have been injured by many of the park animals, including squirrels, bison, deer, and elk. It’s important not to approach or feed animals for their safety, as well as yours. 
• Be prepared for excessive heat if you are visiting in the summer and hiking. Summer temperatures inside the canyon can easily exceed 115 degrees in the summer. 
• Driving in the summer, make sure you take on board our desert driving tips 
• Are you crossing into Arizona from the surrounding states? Be aware that Arizona uses MST and DOES NOT move the clocks forward for daylight savings (in winter, they are in the same time zone as Nevada, in winter, they align with Utah). Adding to any confusion, note that areas that fall under Navajo nation DO follow MDT!

Distance from Sedona to Grand Canyon

The distance from Sedona to Grand Canyon South Rim is almost 108 miles or 174 kilometers.

Sedona to Grand Canyon North Rim is 236 miles or 380 kilometers.

How Long Does it Take to Drive from Sedona to Grand Canyon?

If you go directly from Sedona to Grand Canyon, it takes almost 2 hours if you take I-40 and Highway 64 through the town of Williams. This route will take you to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.

However, if you want to go to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, via US-89N it will take a little more than 4 hours.

Sedona is one of the closest airports to the Grand Canyon, though this scenic airport only takes private charter flights. Coming internationally, you may still want to start your journey in Phoenix, Arizona; the journey from Phoenix to Sedona is also an incredibly scenic 2-hour drive.

Regardless of your route from Sedona to Grand Canyon, you will come across plenty of scenic views and stops on your way. Depending on how many places you stop and whether you stay the night at Williams or Flagstaff, the drive from Sedona to Grand Canyon can take anywhere from several hours to a couple of days.

10 Interesting Stops on a Sedona to Grand Canyon Drive

As we mentioned earlier, there are several amazing places to stop during your road trip, from Sedona to Grand Canyon. Therefore, we have rounded up some of the best stops for a fun and fantastic road trip to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.

1. Grasshopper Point Swimming and Picnic Area

As you drive out of Sedona, you’ll find the Grasshopper Point Swimming and Picnic Area on Route 89A.

It is part of the Coconino National Forest and is a famous spot for tourists and locals to go for a swim, enjoy a relaxing picnic, or simply hang out before heading off toward the Grand Canyon.

Grasshopper Point has a proper arrangement for picnic tables; however, given the crowd, they get filled very quickly. Therefore, if you go early in the morning, you might easily get a good spot.

There are also several trails in the park, the Allen’s Bend, Casner Canyon trail, and the Huckaby trail.

So, relax and unwind amidst the park’s red rock cliffs before your big drive!

2. Oak Creek Canyon

You’ll find the Oak Creek Canyon almost 2.5 miles ahead of Grasshopper Point on Route 89A.

It is a true work of nature with many trees and a rushing creek. There are plenty of camping sites, picnic areas, and hiking trails for the visitors to have a great time.

Apart from the spectacular views, you’ll find small shops selling native American jewelry and other arts & crafts items made by the locals who reside there. Make sure to grab some as souvenirs!

Before you leave this scenic place, we recommend visiting the Oak Creek Canyon Vista, where you can have a panoramic view of the canyon.

Also, make sure to visit Oak Creek Canyon early in the day if you want to have a peaceful stay because it gets crowded later on.

3. Slide Rock State Park

Once you’re done relaxing in Oak Creek Canyon, make your way to the Slide Rock State Park at a 5-minute drive.

It is listed as one of the best secret swimming holes in Arizona, and what you’ll find in this park is far more fun and enjoyable than anything you have experienced along your drive from Sedona to Grand Canyon!

Apart from the amazing view, Slide Rock Park has an 80-feet long water slide made of slippery sandstone. You can swim in the creek, wade your way through the water, and make memories on the world-famous slide!

However, the sandstone under the water gets a bit slippery; therefore, we advise you to go only if you have the proper gear with you.

Also, the park is packed with people during the summer, so plan your trip during the off-season.

4. Flagstaff

By the time you set off from Slide Rock State Park, you would have picnicked and swum to your heart’s content! From here starts the real long drive towards the Grand Canyon.

It sits at a height of 7000 feet and is surrounded by the world’s largest ponderosa pine forest. Flagstaff alone has many places to visit; therefore, you can easily spend a couple of days exploring this beautiful city.

You can go to Downtown Flagstaff to grab a bite of the most delicious food, enjoy a coffee or a beer and rest at one of the hotels for the night because the next day is going to be quite adventurous!

5. Places to Visit in Flagstaff

While in Flagstaff, you can spend time visiting the Flagstaff Arboretum, which has almost 750 plant species. It is open from May through October and has guided tours, kids’ activities, and special events.

The next place to visit in Flagstaff is the Arizona Snowbowl, where you can take a peaceful chairlift ride amidst the spectacular views of snow-capped mountains and color-changing Aspens.

If you visit during the winter, you can enjoy skiing and snowboarding, and if you plan a trip in the summer or fall, you can hike or stroll along the trails. No matter what time of the year you visit, there’s a lot to do!

Another great place to see is the Lowell Observatory. This is the place where Pluto was discovered! So, get hold of that telescope and explore the great wonders of space!

And, if you’re a fan of history, the Museum of Northern Arizona should definitely interest you! It has captivating exhibits of artifacts and lifestyles of the Native Americans.

6. Grand Canyon Deer Farm

After spending a few days in Flagstaff, you can continue your Grand Canyon road trip.

The next stop that we suggest is the Grand Canyon Deer Farm, almost 25 miles ahead of Flagstaff on Interstate 40 on Route 66.

This place is an absolute delight if you have kids with you. The park is spread across an expanse of 10 acres and is home to several friendly animals. There are five deer species, including reindeer, sika deer, and Coues deer. Then there are wallabies, llamas, coatimundi, bison, peacocks, cockatoos, goats, camels, and porcupines.

But that’s not all! You can get up close and personal with the animals by feeding them, walking them, and petting them.

The Grand Canyon Deer Farm is the ultimate animal wonderland for all animal lovers out there!

7. Bearizona Wildlife Park

If you’ve not had enough of the animals, don’t worry, as just 7 miles from the Deer Farm, you will reach the Bearizona Wildlife Park.

The park offers the visitors a drive-thru experience, where you can drive along the path and look at the animals in their natural habitat. There’s also a walk-thru facility, which starts right after the drive-thru portion. Here you will find the Bearizona Barnyard, where you can pet-friendly farm animals and walk through pathways viewing the animal enclosures.

The Bearizona Wildlife Park is home to black bears, Alaskan Tundra wolf, American bison, Arctic wolf, bighorn sheep, bobcats, deer, pythons, grizzly bears, jaguars, Fennec fox, red fox, mountain elks, and reindeer, to name a few.

So, the animals you couldn’t find at the Deer Farm, you can find at the Bearizona Wildlife Park! If you’re tired or don’t feel like getting out of the car, you can drive through the park while looking at the animals. On the other hand, if you’re feeling frisky, you can walk through the park.

Regardless, you will have a stellar time with the animals in the park and the barnyard.

8. Canyon Coaster Adventure Park

Just as you exit the Bearizona Wildlife Park and get back on Historic Route 66, you must drive for approximately 3 miles before reaching the Canyon Coaster Adventure Park.

This park is full of thrill and excitement as you experience various fun rides and have the time of your life. First, there’s the 1-mile Canyon Coaster with a 35 feet tall track that takes you through a hair-raising ride with dips, twists, and 360 degrees corkscrews.

Next, there’s Summer Mountain Tubing, where you can slide down the mountain in tubes! There is also Winter Snow Tubing, where you can slide down a snow mountain in tubes! The snow is made using snowmakers so that you can enjoy this experience from November till Easter.

If you’re famished after all the fun activities, you can head to the Bar and Grill and grab a slice of pizza, bite into a juicy burger or sandwich, or munch on a variety of salads. At the Canyon Coaster Bar and Grill, there’s something for everyone!

9. Williams

After an adrenaline-rushing experience at the Canyon Coaster Adventure Park, it’s time to make your way to Williams.

Although it is a small town, there are many things to do there! For instance, the Historic Route 66 Museum is a great place to visit if you’re interested in the history of Route 66. It has several murals from the past, pictures of groups of people that traveled this road, and the path the Native Americans took for trading purposes.

The museum also has a separate building that houses 29 electric cars from the 19th century. In short, you will find many interesting details about the route’s history and other information.

Once you’re done taking a trip down the past, it’s time to go to the Grand Canyon Railway Station. From here, people take a train to Grand Canyon, enjoying the scenic view and other amenities.

So, if you’re up for a train ride, get a ticket and take the 2.5-hour railroad trip all the way to the Grand Canyon.

Or, you could continue your road trip from Sedona to Grand Canyon in your own car.

10. Grand Canyon National Park

Whether staying at Williams for the night or continuing after a quick bite and refueling, it will take hardly 5 minutes to enter Grand Canyon Avenue. From here, it’s almost 60 miles to reach Grand Canyon National Park’s, South Rim.

Grand Canyon National Park’s South Rim is also known as the Desert View Entrance and is at the easternmost side. This is from where you can have your first glance at the Grand Canyon and the Colorado River.

You have now successfully reached your destination: The Grand Canyon.

Here, you will find many hotels and campgrounds where you can stay around Grand Canyon Village. At the same time, you explore the amazing attractions at the park and surrounding areas. How Far is Grand Canyon from Las Vegas?

The distance from Las Vegas to Grand Canyon is approximately 252 miles; however, the time it takes to reach there depends on your mode of traveling and which rim you’re visiting.

Car

If you’re planning a Grand Canyon road trip from Las Vegas in a private car, reaching the South Rim will take a little more than 4 hours.

However, the West Rim is the closest to Las Vegas, at only 130 miles. So, for the West Rim, you’ll have to drive for only 2.5 hours before reaching the Grand Canyon West Skywalk – the popular viewing point within the Hualapai Reservation rather than the national park.

We highly recommend going by car because that’s the only way to fully enjoy the trip. You can stop at different places and take as much time as you want to explore them for as long as you like.

Shuttle/Shared Bus

You can also take a shuttle/bus to the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas, but it will take a few extra hours.

The bus will take you from Las Vegas to Flagstaff, from where you can get a shuttle to reach the park. The bus ride to Flagstaff takes almost 5 hours with two stops; from there, the shuttle ride to Grand Canyon is approximately 1.5 hours long.

Train

You also have the option of taking a train to the Grand Canyon! To experience the historical train ride, you’ll have to take a bus from Las Vegas to Flagstaff and then from Flagstaff to Williams.

You can take a 2.5-hour railroad trip from Williams to the Grand Canyon National Park.

We recommend the train ride because it is one of the most scenic rides ever!

Helicopter

We’ve all traveled in cars and buses more times than we can count; however, traveling in a helicopter is something we have no or less experience with. So, why not take a helicopter from Las Vegas to Grand Canyon?

It’s fast, it’s fun, and it’s a once-in-a-lifetime kind of experience!

But at the same time, it’s a bit expensive!

So, if you have the budget, we suggest taking a helicopter from Las Vegas to Grand Canyon. If you visit the West rim, you can get there in 40 minutes; however, for the South and North rim, it takes almost 90 minutes.

The plus point is that you can visit the Grand Canyon and return to Las Vegas on the same day.

Also, if you just want to visit the Grand Canyon and back, we suggest traveling by air. Here are 8 of the closest airports to the Grand Canyon if you’re contemplating this option.

Day Trip to Grand Canyon from Las Vegas or Stay Overnight?

People’s most common question regarding their trip to the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas is whether they should take a day trip or stay the night.

This entirely depends on you!

A day trip won’t be enough if you want to explore the whole Grand Canyon National Park. Plus, unless you’re traveling by air, the time it takes to reach Grand Canyon from Las Vegas takes up most of the day, so you won’t have much time to check out the whole park.

However, a day trip is possible if you want to look at the park’s main highlights, like several viewpoints, hike on the rim trail, or catch the sunset. You’ll want to set out super early in the day though, if you want to beat the queues at the popular South Entrance to the national park.

Interesting Stops Between Las Vegas and Grand Canyon

If you are considering traveling to the Grand Canyon South Rim by car, we suggest you go ahead because the drive from Las Vegas to Grand Canyon is nothing short of amazing!

There are countless stops on the way that can make your trip memorable. Assuming you’re entering from the South Entrance to the Grand Canyon National Park, these are some suggested stops you can make along the way for a complete family road trip Las Vegas to Grand Canyon!

1. Sloan Canyon

This first stop on your Grand Canyon road trip from Las Vegas is the Sloan Canyon, just 30 minutes from Las Vegas.

It’s a national conservation area full of cultural and natural resources, spread across an expanse of almost 50000 acres! It has more than 300 sites to visit, which include extinct volcanoes, lava flows, and 1700 designs on 300 rock panels made by the natives who inhabited this place decades ago.

If you have a keen interest in history, the Sloan Canyon will definitely be an enjoyable stop for you.

2. Lion Habitat Ranch

Just 5 miles from Sloan Canyon is the Lion Habitat Ranch. You’ll have to take a bit of a detour to visit this place, but it’s worth it!

This conservation area has been functioning since 1989 and has almost 40 lions you can feed and take selfies with. Apart from lions, there are also parrots, emus, ostriches, and Ozzie, the giraffe.

You can take a tour around the ranch and see how the animals are taken care of by the staff. So, if you have kids with you or are an animal lover, a stopover at the Lion Habitat Ranch should be on your list of places to visit during your Las Vegas road trip to Grand Canyon.

3. Hoover Dam

The next stop is Hoover Dam. You cannot miss this beautiful place as you have to cross it to get to the Grand Canyon. But we suggest leaving time in your itinerary to stop here for a while.

Take in the mesmerizing view, look at the water levels on each side of the dam, head into the Hoover Dam Visitor Center and take a tour to learn about its history and why it was constructed.

Don’t forget to take amazing pictures before moving on!

4. Lake Mead

Just 15 minutes from Hoover Dam, you will arrive at Lake Mead. The lake lies on the Colorado river and is surrounded by beautiful mountains. If you want to spend some time in this scenic place to unwind a bit, head over to the Lake Mead National Recreational Area, where you can go hiking, boating, or camping.

And, if you’re really up for it, you can take a dip in the lake’s cool water to get refreshed!

5. Santa Claus

If you’re interested in ghost towns and abandoned places, you’ll find plenty on your road trip from Las Vegas to Grand Canyon, one of them being Santa Claus.

After almost an hour’s drive from Lake Mead (just north of Kingman), you will pass by Santa Claus, a once-festive town now an abandoned wreck! Apart from the remains of the building that once bustled with merry people and children, there’s not much to see here.

You can just stop by and look at the creepy abandoned place, which still has some vibrant colors peeking from behind the dirt-covered walls, revealing details about its wonderful past.

NB – since our last visit, we’ve been told the whole place is now bulldozed

6. Monolith Garden Trail

If you’re tired of driving and want to stretch your legs a bit, you will find the Monolith Garden Trail just 13 minutes from Santa Claus. You can visit this trail on your way to Kingman, which is hardly 5 minutes away, or you could first reach Kingman, stay the night, and come back fresh in the morning.

This place has 7 miles of loop trails where you can hike, bike, and horse-ride your way amidst volcanic rock formations and Mojave desert vegetation.

7. Kingman

Just a 5-minute drive from the Monolith Garden Trail is the city of Kingman. This is where you can stay for the night and spend a day or two exploring the city’s attractions before continuing your journey toward the Grand Canyon.

Kingman has 3 museums: The Mojave Museum of History and Arts, the Route 66 Museum, and the Kingman Railroad Museum.

If you want to know about wine, visit the many wineries at Kingman, including Cella Winery, Stetson Winery, and Desert Diamond Distillery. Here you can taste various kinds of wines and take a tour of the winery.

8. Alpacas of the Southwest

After spending a couple of days in Kingman, you can continue on Route 66 towards the Grand Canyon. However, just 21 minutes away is the Alpacas of the Southwest.

It is basically a ranch where 37 friendly alpacas live. You can pet them, feed them, and take cute pictures. You can also tour the farm to get an insight into how these animals are taken care of.

As a souvenir, you can get a pair of Alpaca socks to keep you warm for your trip ahead!

9. Keepers of the Wild Nature Park

By this time, you will still have a good 2.5 hours left before you reach the Grand Canyon; therefore, why not visit the Keepers of the Wild Nature Park?

Located 20 minutes to the East of Kingman is a 175-acre canyon that houses over 130 wild animals, including lions, tigers, wolves, bears, leopards, wallabies, and primates. The nature park offers a 1-hour and 15 minutes safari, where the guide takes you through the park so that you can look at the animals in their natural habitat and learn many interesting facts about them.

There’s also a feeding tour where you see the carnivores up close, sinking their teeth into their dinner!

10. Williams

The next stop is Williams. It is a small town but is quite significant because from here you can take a train all the way to the Grand Canyon!

The Grand Canyon Railway Station has a 2.5-hour train ride that takes you to Grand Canyon through the majestic desert landscape. But that’s just one side of the ride! During the ride, the passengers can have a meal in the dining car, visit the gift shop, and enjoy live music.

You can take the train and experience an adventurous ride into the national park, leaving your car behind, or you could stop at William for a bite and get refreshed before you head to the Grand Canyon on your own ride.

It takes a little more than an hour to reach the South rim of the Grand Canyon from Williams. And once you’re there, the first thing you need to do is to find a place to crash!

A Grand Canyon Alternative From Las Vegas

If 4-hours there and back to the Grand Canyon National Park with the kids sounds a little daunting, why not consider a Las Vegas day trip to the West Rim of the Grand Canyon?

Not actually part of the Grand Canyon National Park, Grand Canyon West sits on Hualapai tribal land and is home to the iconic Skywalk, a horseshoe-shaped glass-bottomed bridge that hangs 4,000 feet above the Colorado River.

Day trips from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon Skywalk involve only a 2-hour drive, or many tours will combine this with a trip to Hoover Dam and through the Mojave Desert for a complete day outing.

Grand Canyon National Park is a busy tourist spot; therefore, there are plenty of places where you can stay for the night, but do be aware that the lodges within the park can be booked up many months in advance.

Inside the Grand Canyon

If you want to stay in a hotel inside the Grand Canyon at the South Rim, six lodges are located there. On a budget, Yavapai Lodge, located at a distance of 10 minutes from the visitor’s center, is a good family choice. It has a rustic exterior and a contemporary interior for a restful night’s stay.

Then, if budget and booking availability allow, there’s the El Tovar Hotel, which offers some of the most breathtaking views of the Grand Canyon.

Outside the Grand Canyon

If you’re staying outside of the Grand Canyon National Park, you can book a good-value room at the Grand Canyon Inn, Grand Canyon Junction.

For a more luxurious stay, choose the Best Western Premier Grand Canyon Squire Inn Tusayan, which offers many amenities to the guests, including a jacuzzi, gym, that you won’t find at the national park lodges. It is only 10 minutes away from the main entrance, so early risers can still get in before the crowds and capture the sunrise.

The drive from Las Vegas to Grand Canyon National Park may only be around 4 hours long, but it has numerous stops along the way, which can extend your Grand Canyon road trip by a couple of days.

The phenomenon is commonly known as the Great Unconformity; however, how it took place and what happened during it remains a mystery!

Every year millions of people make their way to northern Arizona to explore the depths and caverns of the Grand Canyon and solve the mysteries that lie within its caves and crevices.

However, reaching the Grand Canyon National Park requires some driving; no matter how you approach it, there are no big cities adjacent to the Grand Canyon. Will you drive all the way from your home destination or travel by air and complete your journey by road and rental car?

Whether you’re a US resident or traveling to the US from some other country, we have put together some of the best and closest airports to the Grand Canyon for your convenience in planning your Grand Canyon vacation.

Closest Airports to Grand Canyon

There are several airports close to the Grand Canyon in cities that are situated near it, like Las Vegas, Flagstaff, Sedona, and Phoenix. But before you book your flight, you should ask yourself whether you’re visiting the Grand Canyon South Rim or North Rim.

This entirely depends on the time of the year you choose to travel. For instance, you can visit the South and the North Rim if you’re traveling in the summer. However, if your trip is a winter getaway, you will only be able to visit the South Rim due to accessibility.

Here are some of the closest airports to the Grand Canyon, complete with their distance from the Grand Canyon and whether they’re close to the South Rim or the North Rim.

1. Grand Canyon National Park Airport, Arizona

The Grand Canyon National Park Airport is a small airport situated in the town of Tusayan, Arizona.

It is the closest airport to the Grand Canyon, as it is located hardly 8 miles away from the South Rim, and it would take almost 15 minutes to reach the entrance. On the other hand, you will have to take a 4-hour road trip to reach the North Rim.

The state owns the airport, which is usually used for private aircraft tours or charter flights. It does have a schedule for commercial flights, but the frequency is quite low. For instance, there are only a few flights from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon, with a sky-high ticket price. However, the duration is only 35 minutes.

If you have a high budget or own a private jet, landing at the Grand Canyon National Park Airport won’t be a big deal. Plus, you’ll find plenty of hotels and restaurants in Tusayan where you can stay during your visit.

We wouldn’t recommend this airport as the best for travelers on a budget or traveling with family as it might get too expensive.

2. St. George Regional Airport, Utah

If you want to visit the North Rim of the Grand Canyon National Park, we would suggest taking a flight to the St. George Regional Airport in Utah as the closest small commercial airport.

The only commercial flights that ever land at this airport are from Salt Lake City, Phoenix, Denver, and occasionally Los Angeles.

The airport is at 2 hours and 45 minutes drive from the North Rim. However, visiting the Grand Canyon via this airport would only be feasible if you’re flying in from Denver or Los Angeles, as the flights are 1 hour 50 minutes and 3 hours 15 minutes long. 

But, if you’re coming from Phoenix or Salt Lake City, we suggest coming by car to save money, as the flight duration is hardly 1 hour and 15 minutes from both cities.

3. Flagstaff Pulliam Airport, Arizona

If you’re looking for an airport that has frequent flights from other cities, you should choose Flagstaff Pulliam Airport for your trip to the Grand Canyon.

Flagstaff is one of the largest cities near the Grand Canyon; therefore, its regional airport has frequent flights from Denver, Phoenix, and Fort Worth. If you take a flight from Denver, you can reach Flagstaff in around 1 hour and 55 minutes, while it takes just 50 minutes from Phoenix. However, the longest flight is from Fort Worth, which has a duration of 2 hours and 30 minutes.

The Flagstaff Pulliam Airport is 90 miles away from the South Rim, and it takes almost 1 hour and 30 minutes to get there by road. If you want to go to the North Rim, it will take almost 3 hours and 40 minutes, as it is 212 miles away.

So, if you want to get to the Grand Canyon without wasting time, the best way is to get a connecting flight from Denver, Phoenix, or Dallas to Flagstaff and then take the train or shuttle to Grand Canyon National Park.

4. Prescott Ernest A. Love Field Airport

Prescott is a city in central Arizona, and due to it being quite close to the Grand Canyon, the Prescott Ernest A. Love Field Airport is a great place to take a flight to for your trip.

Although it does not have many frequent commercial flights, you can get a connecting flight from Kingman, Los Angeles, Page, Moab, and Denver.

If you come via Los Angeles, it will take 1 hour and 20 minutes to reach Prescott, while from Denver, it takes 1 hour and 50 minutes. The flights from Kingman and Page are relatively short and take hardly 42 and 51 minutes, respectively. The longest flight is from Moab, which is 5 hours and 12 minutes long.

From the Prescott Ernest A. Love Field Airport, you can reach the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park in around 2.5 hours. However, if you want to visit the North Rim, it’s an approximately 5-hour drive.

5. Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport

If you’re traveling to see the Grand Canyon from outside the US or from other US states, the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is by far the best choice. It is the closest major international airport to the South Rim.

It has flights from all around the US and from all over the world. You can get a direct flight to Phoenix from Canada, Mexico, and the UK. But, as Phoenix does not have as many frequent international flights as Las Vegas, you’ll have to get connecting flights from other countries, resulting in increased airfare.

If you’re on a budget, we suggest getting a flight to Las Vegas instead, in case you are traveling from countries with connecting flights.

The Grand Canyon’s South Rim is at a distance of 3 hours and 35 minutes, while the North Rim is at 5 hours and 40 minutes. So, if you’re visiting the Grand Canyon via Phoenix, you’ll have to stay at a place closer to the park.

6. Harry Reid International Airport

Whether you’re visiting the Grand Canyon from inside the US or from another country, getting a flight to the Harry Reid International Airport (formerly McCarran International Airport – LAS) is the best option.

It is one of the biggest airports near the Grand Canyon and caters direct flights worldwide. So, no matter where you’re coming from, you’ll surely get a flight to Las Vegas. As for people traveling from inside the US, you can get the lowest fares.

Another great thing about the Harry Reid Airport is that it is located at a central location from where both the South Rim and the North Rim are easily accessible at 4 hours and 30 minutes drive. However, even though the traveling distance is almost the same, the North Rim is nearest to the airport.

7. Salt Lake City International Airport

Salt Lake City International Airport is one option to get to the Grand Canyon; however, we won’t call it the closest major airport to Grand Canyon. It takes almost 8 hours and 10 minutes to get to the South Rim from here. The North Rim, however, is a bit close at a distance of 6 hours and 15 minutes.

Then why have you mentioned this airport if it takes this long, you ask?

Because the road trip from Salt Lake City to Grand Canyon is one of the most scenic and adventurous road trips out there, with the Utah Mighty 5 National Parks on the way!

However, if you’re looking forward to the amazing road trip, you can easily get a flight to the Salt Lake City International Airport from all the states in the US, but the fares might be a bit high compared to flights to Phoenix or Las Vegas.

As for international flights, you can get direct flights from Canada, Mexico, the Netherlands, and France, but they won’t be cheap. You might have a New York stopover from some countries before heading to Salt Lake City.

If you’re on a budget and would rather reach the Grand Canyon as early as possible, you can check out the other airports with cheaper flights and a shorter drive.

This is a great choice, though, if you’re undertaking a complete desert road trip from Salt Lake City to Zion and perhaps Bryce National Parks, then continuing on south from Zion to Arizona. 8. Sedona Airport

We’ll keep the Sedona Airport for last because even though it is one of the closest airports to the Grand Canyon, it does not have any commercial flights flying in or out.

That’s right! You need a private jet or a charter plane to get to this airport. The Sedona Airport is located on top of a mountain, almost 500 feet above the main city, and is listed as one of the most scenic airports in the US.

Once you reach Sedona Airport, it takes almost 2 hours and 10 minutes to reach the South Rim of the Grand Canyon by road. And if you head toward the North Rim, it will take approximately 4.5 hours.

Going via Sedona would be a good choice if you have a private plane and want to visit the Grand Canyon’s South Rim. For people dependent on commercial flights, we suggest taking a flight to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and visiting Sedona and the Grand Canyon in one trip.

Final Thoughts

If you’re going to visit the Grand Canyon, the best way is to get a flight to the nearest city and, from there, take a road trip to the Grand Canyon National Park.

However, many of the closest airports to the Grand Canyon do not cater to frequent domestic or international flights. Some airports only have flights from a handful of cities; therefore, you have to resort to getting connecting flights.

Only a couple of large international airports have proper flights from all over the US and other countries.
