One of the most majestic drives in the US is one that goes from Chicago to Niagara Falls. Passing along two of the Great Lakes, you can’t beat the beautiful scenery and the ultimate bucket list destination. 

There are a couple of routes to consider when planning your Chicago to Niagara Falls road trip. Do you want to head straight east, exploring the southern shore of Lake Erie?

Or could you consider first spending some time along the eastern shores of Lake Michigan before crossing into the land of our Canadian neighbors to the north?

If you’re not quite sure which route is best, you’re in luck. We’ve mapped out three different ways to road trip to Niagara Falls from Chicago and the best places to stop along each one.

Distance from Chicago to Niagara Falls

The most direct route to get from Chicago to Niagara Falls will take you through Kalamazoo and Detroit, over the Canadian border towards Hamilton, and on to Niagara Falls in just about 520 miles.

Staying Stateside, you could hug the southern edge of Lake Erie, passing through cities like Toledo, Cleveland, Erie, and Buffalo for a total of 580 miles to Niagara.

How Long Do I Need Driving Chicago to Niagara Falls?

The fastest route from Chicago to Niagara Falls can be done in about eight hours. But seriously, why rush? 

There’s so much to see and do along the way that it’s a much better idea to take your time and spend two to three days on the road. Then, on your way back, you can change your route and see even more of this incredible landscape as you drive from Niagara Falls to Chicago.

Best Time of Year to Drive Chicago to Niagara Falls

Hands down, the best time of year to do a Chicago to Niagara Falls road trip is in the summer. The reason? It’s when you’ll have pleasant temps in the ‘80s. Making the time in the car easy to stop, stretching your legs, and enjoying everything along the way. It also means that the mist from the falls will be refreshing rather than bone-chilling like at other times of the year.

Best Stops on a Chicago to Niagara Falls Road Trip 

Saugatuck & Grand Rapids, MI

A great place to make a stop along this part of the trip is the beautiful beach town of Saugatuck. You’ll get there in just about three hours traveling along the shores of Lake Michigan on I-90 to I-94, then I-916. 

Here, you can stretch your legs on the beach, climb the dunes at Saugatuck Dunes State Park, or just enjoy the town’s shops and restaurants. This lovely place is definitely worth a stop on your road trip to Niagara Falls from Chicago – if not a standalone family lake vacation!

Once you’ve reached Grand Rapids, the kids will love to visit the John Ball Zoo. There are so many animals to see and even ones they can pet. You’ll see some really cool things at the Grand Rapids Public Museum, including a skeleton of a Blue Whale, an antique steam engine, a planetarium, and a good ol’ carousel, making it a must-visit when visiting the city.

If your family needs a bit of outdoor time, head to Millenium Park while you’re in Grand Rapids. This fabulous place is so much more than just a park. Everyone in the family will have fun hiking and biking on the park’s trails, boating on the lake, relaxing on the beach, and cooling off in the splash pad. 

There are plenty of places to stay if you’re RVing. Check out Steamboat Park Campground or Woodchip Campground.

London, ON

Leaving Grand Rapids, head east on I-69. This leg of the Chicago to Niagara Falls drive will take just about four hours and includes traveling over the US-Canada border so have your passports ready. You’ll get to see beautiful landscapes in both Michigan and Ontario on the way to your next destination, London.

For outdoor family fun in London, head to Boler Mountain. No matter the season, you’ll be in for a ton of fun, like hiking, mountain biking, tubing, rope courses, and skiing. 

Everyone in the family will love experiencing the past at the Fanshawe Pioneer Village where the past comes to life. Hours of operation vary with the season so make sure to check before heading there.
London is a great area for camping and RVing. There are tons of parks to choose from, including Prospect Hill Campground and Dalewood Conservation Area.

St. Joseph, MI

Just over an hour and a half from Chicago, you’ll arrive in St. Joseph. Yes, it is relatively early on the road trip to Niagara Falls from Chicago. But, as one of the best beach towns in Michigan, it’s a must-stop town. Set on the banks of Lake Michigan, it’s the perfect place to spend some time before heading west toward Niagara Falls. 

Here you can enjoy the lake with the many sandy beaches like Silver Beach. With lifeguards on duty, everyone can have fun in the water. 

Definitely check out Warren Dunes State Park. Hiking up and surfing down the dunes is the best way to release energy before getting back in the car for the rest of the road trip ahead. Or, simply swim in the freshwater. If it’s a hot summer day, let the kids cool off at the Whirlpool Campus Fountain.

Ann Arbor, MI

Ann Arbor is a great stop on the road trip from Chicago to Niagara Falls and just about a 2.5-hour drive from St. Joseph on I-94E.

You’ll love exploring the beautiful campus of the University of Michigan. As a town of intellectuals, there are a bunch of great places to visit in Ann Arbor, like the University of Michigan Museum of Art and the Natural History Museum. Kids will also love going to the Ann Arbor Hands-on Museum where they’re encouraged to touch everything!

If you’re taking this trip in the summer, check out the Ann Arbor Summer Art Festival (A2SAF). There are fun things for everyone in the family. You can also paddle the Huron River or in Gallup Park for some outdoor water fun.

If you’re doing this road trip in an RV, you’ll find a bunch of nice places to park. Although they won’t be in the center of town, you’ll find great places just a short drive away, like Sun Outdoor Kensington Valley and Hell Creek Ranch Campground.

Hamilton, ON

In less than four hours of a drive from Ann Arbor on this Niagara Falls road trip, you’ll reach Hamilton. During this leg of the trip, you’ll be passing over the border into Canada so, have the proper ID ready. In Canada, you’ll travel on Highway 401, then the 403. 

Within the city limits, Hamilton has a bunch of its own waterfalls, like Albion Falls, Tews Falls, and Great Falls.

Toledo, OH

Keeping it state-side, you’ll be passing through Indiana and into Ohio. This leg of the trip will take you just about four hours to get to Toledo.

There are tons to do in Toledo for the whole family. Get everyone out of the car and go for a hike in Maumee Bay State Park or enjoy any of the city’s Metroparks, like the brand-new Glass City Metropark.

Kids of all ages will love seeing the animals at the Toledo Zoo and Aquarium. For a real hands-on experience, consider going to the Imagination Station, where they will learn by doing (closed on Mondays).  To learn why Toledo is called Glass City, check out the art at the Toledo Museum of Art and see a glass-blowing demonstration (open Wednesday through Sunday).

Cleveland, OH

From Toledo you’ll travel just over three hours on I-90E to reach Cleveland, the next stop on this road trip from Chicago to Niagara Falls.

One of the best things to do in Cleveland, no matter your age or ability, is to visit the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Here you can go for a hike, take a stroll, enjoy a ride on the scenic railroad, kayak the Cuyahoga River, and bike the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail. The best part of it all is: entrance to the Cuyahoga Valley National Park is free for everyone!

Back in the energetic city, there’s something for everyone. Kids will love the Children’s Museum of Cleveland (closed Thursdays), Great Lakes Science Museum, and Cleveland Museum of Natural History (closed Mondays). 

Make sure to spend some time on the waterfront for sports, dining, or even just a simple stroll along the water. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a must-do 

Pro-Tip: Make Cleveland your major stop on the way back to Chicago from Niagara Falls. It’s a longer drive (3.5 hours from Niagara Falls and five hours to Chicago) but totally worth it to spend a full day or two in the city.

Erie, PA

During this epic Chicago to Niagara Falls drive, Erie is a great place to get out and experience the beauty of the Great Lakes. You’ll love relaxing on the beach, like Sands Beach in nearby Harborcreek. Or, head to Presque Isle State Park, where there are great beaches, hiking, and a lighthouse to explore. 

Other things not to miss in Erie are the Zoo (open daily), Hagen History Center (closed Mondays), ExpERIEnce Children’s Museum (open Wednesday-Sunday), and the Erie Maritime Museum (open Wednesday-Sunday).  

For one of the best views of the lake, you’ll want to hike the Erie Bluffs State Park. 

If you’re looking for a super unique experience the entire family will love, head out on the waters for Scallywags Pirate Adventure. It’s one you’ll never forget!

Buffalo, NY

Now, Buffalo is literally just down the road from Niagara Falls, but it’s just a great place to spend some time that we just had to put on this itinerary as its own stop. 

There’s so much for families to do in Buffalo. Make sure to put both the Buffalo Zoo and Buffalo Museum of Science on the itinerary. The Buffalo Waterfront is the perfect place to spend some time, especially in the summer. Everyone in the family will get into the fun with things like water bikes, kayaking, roller skating and playgrounds.

When you’re ready to continue on your Niagara Falls road trip, you can opt to cross the Peace Bridge into Canada or stay stateside and head up to the falls. Either way, the drive will take about half an hour. Remember to have your documents ready for the border crossing at the Peace Bridge.

Niagara Falls, NY & ON

No matter which route you take to get here. Your final destination is the great Niagara Falls. On The US or Canadian side, this spectacular place has been a favorite destination for centuries. And it continues to be one of the best vacation spots for the entire family. 

There are so many ways to experience the falls. Check it out from observation decks on boat tours like the Maid of the Mist, which will get you up close to the base of the falls. 

For insane views, you can ride a zipline over the Canadian side of the falls. Or even consider going on a journey behind the falls! Everyone in the family will absolutely love this road trip from Chicago to Niagara Falls. Making it a family trip with memories to last a lifetime.

1. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is definitely worth checking out if you’re in the area. The 35-mile-long route winds along the shores of Lake Michigan, past towering dunes and through birch and pine forests.

Along the way, you’ll have the opportunity to spot wildlife, hike in the sand dunes, and take in views of the lake that will take your breath away.

There are several must-see stops along the way, including the Dune Climb, Sleeping Bear Point, and Empire Bluff. The Dune Climb is a windswept beach where you can search for agates and offers incredible views of the surrounding area (if you can brave the climb!).

Sleeping Bear Point is a beautiful spot for sunset watching and, of course, the Sleeping Bear Dunes themselves – the largest collection of freshwater coastal dunes in the world.

2. Porcupine Mountains Scenic Byway

Not an official byway by name, the Silver City-Lake Gogebic Loop is about 120 Miles long and takes you through the heart of the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, offering stunning views of Lake Superior and the surrounding forests. The drive itself is pretty incredible, but there are also plenty of opportunities to get out and explore.

If you love waterfalls, this is definitely the drive for you. There are several of them along the way, including Little Union Gorge Falls, Nonesuch Falls, Manabezho, Manido, and Nawadaha falls.

The Upper Peninsula is known for its wild beauty, and the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park is a great place to experience it. The Park covers more than 60,000 acres of forestland and over 90 miles of hiking trails that wind through the woods.

The park also offers several campgrounds, cabins, and yurts for those who want a more rustic experience. Animal lovers will enjoy the variety of wildlife, including deer, bears, moose, and bald eagles.

You’ll also want to make sure to stop at Lake of the Clouds, an absolutely stunning overlook that offers panoramic views of the area. It’s definitely one of the highlights of the drive!

3. Pure Michigan Byway M-22

This is probably one of Michigan’s most well-known scenic drives, and for good reason – it’s absolutely beautiful. The drive itself is about 120 miles long and takes you along the Lake Michigan shoreline, past forests, and dunes, with several small towns along the way.

One of the best things about M-22 is that there are so many different places to stop and explore. Some of the must-sees include Arcadia Bluffs overlook, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (mentioned above), Point Betsie Lighthouse, and the small town of Glen Arbor.

Built in 1858, the Point Betsie Lighthouse is one of the most photographed lighthouses in Michigan, and is still in use today. Situated on the shores of Lake Michigan, it offers stunning views of the water and surrounding landscapes.

The lighthouse is open to the public and features an informative museum about the area’s history. Climb to the top of the lighthouse, or there are also several nearby hiking trails, perfect for exploring the region’s natural beauty. And in the evening, visitors can enjoy a sunset cruise on one of the lake’s many scenic cruises.

Glen Arbor is a great place to stop for a bite to eat or to do some shopping. There are plenty of cute little shops, as well as art galleries, ice cream parlors, and restaurants. The town also has a beautiful beach where you can relax and enjoy the views.

4. Tahquamenon Scenic Byway

The Tahquamenon Scenic Byway is a beautiful route that runs along the Tahquamenon River in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula through some of the state’s most beautiful countryside.

The byway is about 60 miles long and winds through forests and past lakes, offering stunning views of the river and access to several great hiking trails and picnic areas.

One of the highlights of the drive is Tahquamenon Falls State Park, which features two stunning waterfalls – the Upper Falls and Lower Falls. The Upper Falls is one of the largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi River and is absolutely breathtaking.

The Lower Falls is a series of smaller waterfalls but is no less impressive. Both are definitely worth a visit! The out-and-back hike to the Falls is about ten miles and moderate in difficulty.

Rainbow Point is a lovely spot located just off the Byway, where you can enjoy a picnic lunch with a view. Rainbow Point gets its name from the colorful rocks that line the shore of the Tahquamenon River. It’s a great place to relax and take in the area’s natural beauty.

5. Sunrise Coast US-23

The Sunrise Coast US-23 in Michigan is a beautiful route that hugs the shoreline from Mackinaw City to Standish. From the Upper Peninsula’s rolling hills to Lake Huron’s sandy shores, this route takes you through some of Michigan’s most stunning scenery.

It’s a popular drive for locals and tourists alike and offers plenty of sightseeing, shopping, and dining opportunities.

One of the Sunrise Coast highlights is the Mackinac Bridge, which spans five miles over the Straits of Mackinac and connects Michigan’s Upper and Lower Peninsulas.

It’s one of the longest suspension bridges in the world and offers stunning views of the water and surrounding countryside. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a ship passing underneath!

Headlands International Dark Sky Park is close to the bridge on 2 miles of undeveloped Lake Michigan beach. This is one of only a handful of parks in the US that has been designated as an International Dark Sky Park, offering some of the best stargazing opportunities in the world!

The park has five miles of hiking trails and is also home to several wild native animals, including whitetail deer, bald eagles, coyotes, osprey, wild turkeys, and sometimes you may even see a black bear.

Mackinac Island is another highlight of the Sunrise Coast. This small island is only accessible by ferry, and once you’re there, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time.

There are no cars allowed on the island, so the only way to get around is by foot, bike, or horse-drawn carriage. The island is home to several historical sites, as well as beautiful beaches, forests, and trails.

Further south, stop at picturesque Tawas Point State Park for a dip in the warm shallow waters or to enjoy a picnic lunch while birdwatching.

Tawas Point is a sandy peninsula that juts out into Lake Huron and offers stunning views in all directions. It’s a great place to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of Michigan.

6. Tunnel of Trees

One of the most iconic drives in Michigan is a 20 miles section of M-119, also known as the Tunnel of Trees. It gets its name from the canopy of trees that arch over the road, creating a tunnel-like effect.

The two-lane road winds its way through the dense forest canopy, offering breathtaking views of the falling foliage and the bright green of the trees in the spring.

The route is popular with cyclists and has been named one of the best cycling routes in the country.

The distance from Chicago to NYC is 790 miles, which takes between 12 and 13 hours of pure driving. You’ll be moving about half of the way on I-90 east and the second half on I-80 when driving from Chicago to New York by car. 

The 790-mile road trip from Chicago to New York City can be done in a little over 12 hours, but the idea is to take a few days and stop along the Great Lakes, Pittsburgh, and Philadelphia, as well as check in at a couple of beautiful national parks on the way. 

Along your Chicago to NY drive, you’ll be passing from a big metropolis to small towns and lakeside villages in a smorgasbord of stunning landscapes and must-see sights before you arrive at the Big Apple. 

How Long Do I Need to Drive from Chicago to New York? 

Your road trip from Chicago to NYC can take from a couple of days to two or three weeks. It all boils down to how much time you have available. We strongly suggest spending a couple of weeks in order to have plenty of time to visit some of the cities’ highlights while leaving room to enjoy what the smaller towns have on the menu. 

If you have the time and want to shake it up a little, you can take a slightly more scenic 900-mile route, with a few detours and byways that will give you a few more things to do and see along the way. 

If you drive direct without stops, Chicago to New York City will take you around 12 hours.

Best Time Of Year to Drive from Chicago to NYC 

The Midwest and Northeast regions of the United States have somewhat extreme weather. If you’re not keen on sweating out the heat or getting stuck in a winter storm, your best bet is to plan your road trip from Chicago to New York City in the late spring or early summer. 

Of course, some attractions are on offer only during the summer and winter months, so it really depends on what exactly you want to do during your getaway. Early fall is also a good option if you’re not into crowds, especially when you consider fall foliage in that region of the US is stunning. 

Best Stops on a Chicago to New York Road Trip 

Chicago 

Chicago is the biggest city in the Midwest and the third in size in the US. The Windy City is famous for its skyline full of skyscrapers, baseball, and great hot dogs. You could spend a week or two exploring everything on Windy City’s menu, but a couple of days should be enough to experience the main highlights. 

For spectacular aerial views, Chicago offers two observation decks situated in two of the most famous skyscrapers in the world – Skydeck, which is on the 103rd floor of the Willis Tower, and 360 Chicago on the 94th floor of the John Hancock Building. 

Millennium Park is a must-see in Chicago. This attraction is set above The Art Institute of Chicago and homes incredible art, architecture, and landscaping. 

Traveling with children, be sure to take them to the Field Museum of Natural History, one of the Windy City’s most iconic museums. They’ll also have a blast at the Museum of Ice Cream! 

Lake Michigan 

The first leg of your journey, once you leave Chicago, will take you around the southern part of Lake Michigan, the second largest of the Great Lakes. 

A great way to experience the lake is to stop at Portage, which is only 41 miles from the Windy City. Incredibly enough, you’ll have entered the state of Indiana by driving that short distance on I-90! 

Portage is most famous as a gateway to the Indiana Dunes National Park, which is worth paying a visit. Here, you can hike the three-dune 1.5-mile challenge or simply relax and swim at the beach.  

There are plenty of boarding options both at Indiana Dunes and Portage, in case you decide to make it an overnight stop or squeeze in a few days of lake vacation on your way to New York. Portage Lakefront & Riverwalk’s enclosed pavilion offers food services and restrooms.

Cleveland – Lake Erie, Ohio 

The next stop is Cleveland. You’ll be leaving Lake Michigan behind and traveling east on I-90 for 350 miles I-90 until you reach the capital city of Ohio. 

One of Cleveland’s greatest attractions is its location on the banks of Lake Erie and the insane views that go hand-in-hand. Depending on the weather, you might want to go for a full day of water and lakefront activities or simply enjoy a waterfront stroll or dinner at one of the various restaurants located on the boardwalk. 

Cleveland has a full range of activities for the whole family to enjoy, so we strongly recommend planning for a couple of days here – you’ll soon see why it’s one of the best family vacation spots in the Midwest!

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Great Lakes Science Center, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Cleveland Museum of Natural History are only a few examples of what Cleveland has on offer. 

The Children’s Museum of Cleveland, Ralphie’s actual house from A Christmas Story, complete with the Leg Lamp in the window, and the Cleveland Zoo will keep the little ones busy for hours, too, in case you’re travelling with kids. 

If you’re itching for a nature fix and have the time to indulge, Cuyahoga Valley National Park is a mere 20 minutes from the city. Pittsburgh 

A 134-mile drive going southeast on I-80 will take you to your next stop: Pittsburgh, also known as Steel City. 

Famous for its steel production, fine architecture, and 446 bridges, this destination in Pennsylvania offers a plethora of things to do for kids and adults alike. You’ll need at least two days to really savor what the city has in store for you. 

Long gone are the days when the coal industry’s soot and grit defined the city. Today, Pittsburgh is a thriving arts and culture center, and a haven for nature lovers because of its privileged location on a plateau at the point where the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio Rivers form a triangle. 

Besides a thriving gastronomical nightlife scene, Pittsburgh is home to marvelous attractions like the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Garden, the Cathedral of Learning, a Gothic Revival skyscraper that towers above the University of Pittsburgh campus at 535 feet tall, and the Andy Warhol Museum. It is also the proud host of the world-renowned Carnegie museum, including the Museum of Natural History, the Carnegie Science Center, and the Carnegie Museum of Art.  

If you’re driving from Chicago to New York with the kids, few cities rival Pittsburgh when it comes to keeping them entertained. The Makeshop is an innovative studio where kids’ visions are converted into tangible objects. They’ll be fascinated with the collection of original antique vehicles, as well as the jungle gym and largest collection of items from Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.

For those yearning for an amusement park, Kennywood is one of the oldest amusement parks in America, with six major roller coasters, water rides, a kiddie park, and classic rides. 

Lancaster, Pennsylvania 

Once you’re ready to leave the Steel City of Pittsburgh behind, you must take I-76 and head 238 east to Lancaster, home to the largest Amish settlement in the US and a great place to stop en route. 

A relatively short stop at this quaint village offers a unique opportunity to experience the vastly different way of life and rich history that traces its roots back to English, Dutch, and German settlers. 

Take the Amish Village tours for a peek at their rolling farmlands and farmhouses, schools, and outbuildings. Be sure to eat some hearty Amish food and shop for crafts made by the settlers who resist modernity and prefer an old-fashioned, simple way of life. 

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

68 miles from Lancaster, going east on I-76, you’ll find Philadelphia, a stunning city full of historic landmarks and other highlights for the whole family. Again, our recommendation is to try to make it a two-day stop here so as to have enough time to explore the best sites. 

You simply can’t visit Philly without exploring the Historic District. After all, the area between Delaware River, 7th, Vine, and Lombard streets that span the original city boundaries is one of the key points where the US was born! 

You’ll find several historic sites and iconic buildings here, including but not limited to Independence Hall – where the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution were written  – and President’s House, the home of George Washington and John Adams during the 1700s when Philadelphia was the capital of the United States. 

Other must-see historical landmarks in Philly include the Museum of the American Revolution, Liberty Bells Center, the African American Museum, and the beloved Betsy Ross House. The latter is the picturesque house where Betsy crafted the first American flag, and you can wander through the small rooms and learn about her role in the American Independence. Family treasures include some original furniture, her eyeglasses, and her original Bible. 

Of course, not everything is history in Philadelphia. You can find other attractions, such as the Please-Touch Museum, Adventure Aquarium, Longwood Gardens, and the Drexel University Academy of Natural Sciences, all perfect for kids and families. The Franklin Institute, Sesame Place, and the Philadelphia Zoo are marvelous options for the little ones as well. 

NYC 

Last but certainly not least on your road trip is New York City, which you’ll reach by taking I-95 and traveling northeast for about 95 miles. 

The most populous city on the US East Coast, NYC awaits you with all its hustle and bustle to cap off your road adventure with an exciting grand finale. The Big Apple is home to hundreds of attractions, including historic landmarks, museums, parks, and iconic neighborhoods, so do try to stay for several days if at all possible. 

New York City has many museums related to almost any theme you can imagine. They range from some of the most famous museums in the world that exhibit impressive collections to smaller premises that house small collections geared to all types of travelers, including art aficionados, fans of the quirky, engineers, or Instagrammers on the lookout for cool photo ops. 

The Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met), Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), National 9/11 Memorial Museum, and the American Museum of Natural History are a few of the not-to-be-missed iconic attractions, but you’ll find museums dedicated to gangsters, dogs, colors, skyscrapers, and much more. 

When the city bustle gets to be a bit overwhelming, you can “escape” to one of the many parks housed within the city limits. Central Park, of course, is the first one that comes to mind, being the oldest public park in the United States and one of the most iconic parks in the world.

Smaller green lungs in NYC worth checking out are Washington Square Park, the High Line, Battery, and Prospect Park – many of these parks make for great free activities with kids in NYC.

New York City is a tapestry of neighborhoods that fit together to form the marvelous metropolis that is the largest city in the US. We recommend trying to spend some time in some of the most iconic ones to get an ample idea of what the city is about. These include Soho, Greenwich Village, Washington Heights, Chelsea, DUMBO, and the famed Little Italy and Chinatown depicted in many films.

Saugatuck

Saugatuck is a small town located in southwestern Michigan, about an hour from Grand Rapids. It’s a popular destination for tourists who enjoy the town’s quaint atmosphere and many shops and restaurants. Saugatuck is a thriving community with a strong sense of history and tradition.

Every year, the town hosts several festivals and events, which help to keep its small-town charm alive. Here are four things to do in Saugatuck:

1. Go to the beach: Saugatuck has several lovely beaches, but we think Oval Beach and Douglas Beach and the best beaches. Both are great for swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying the views, and Condé Nast Traveler has named Oval Beach one of the world’s finest beaches. Douglas Beach is a hidden gem for those who prefer a quieter afternoon.

2. Visit the Saugatuck Dunes State Park: With over two miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, hiking trails, and sand dunes reaching up to 200 feet high, it’s easy to spend the whole day at the Saugatuck Dunes State Park. It’s also an excellent place for picnicking, bird watching, and more.

3. Take a boat ride: A boat ride on the Kalamazoo River is a great way to see the sights of Saugatuck from the water. The historic Saugatuck Chain Ferry has been running since 1838 and is one of the last of its kind in operation.

4. Climb the stairs at Mount Baldhead: This is a popular spot for sunset-watching, but it’s also fun to climb the 282 steps to the top of Mount Baldhead for panoramic views of Saugatuck and the surrounding area.

Grand Haven

Grand Haven officially became a town in 1867, though settlers had been living in the area for some time before that. The town is known for its “singing sands” because of the dunes’ whistling sound when people walk on them.

Many annual events take place in Grand Haven, such as the Coast Guard Festival and the art fair on the boardwalk called Art on the Riverfront. These are our favorite four things to do in Grand Haven:

1. Visit the Grand Haven State Park beach: The Grand Haven State Park beach is one of the most popular visitor attractions in town. All 48 acres of this park are beach sand situated on the shores of Lake Michigan. Most visitors come to enjoy the sunshine and water, but the park also offers camping and fishing.

2. Go for a walk or bike ride on the Boardwalk: The Boardwalk is a 1.5-mile-long path that runs along the waterfront and provides access to shops and restaurants. The Boardwalk is a popular spot for walking, jogging, biking, and rollerblading and leads you to the pier and two lighthouses.

3. Learn about lighthouses: The two lighthouses on the Grand Haven pier were established in 1839 and are still an active aid to navigation. Painted bright red, the lighthouse pair is a recognizable landmark and has become a symbol of the town, earning them a spot on the list of most photographed lighthouses in the Midwest.

4. Visit the Musical Fountain: The Grand Haven Musical Fountain is the largest in the world and puts on a spectacular show set to music every night in the summer.

St. Joseph

This charming town shows off not one but seven bright white sand beaches with crystal clear water, making it one of the most loved beach towns in Michigan.

With thousands of acres of State Parkland, outdoor enthusiasts will revel in the abundance of campsites with modern and rustic amenities, sand dunes, picnics areas, hiking trails, and more.

If we had to pick just four things to do on your next visit, we recommend:

1. Go to Silver Beach: This is the most popular beach in St. Joseph, and for good reason! The wide, sandy beach offers a large dedicated area for swimming that is manned by lifeguards. You can also access the pier from Silver Beach, a great place for fishing or just taking in the views.

2. Visit the Curious Kids’ Museum: This hands-on museum is great for families with younger kids and has a variety of interactive exhibits. Kids can explore a lighthouse, crawl through tunnels, play on a water table, and much more.

3. Check out Warren Dunes State Park: With towering sand dunes that are over 250 feet high, this is a must-see when visiting St. Joseph. You can hike to the top of the dunes for a panoramic view of Lake Michigan and surf down on your sandboard (if you dare!).

4. Cool off at the Whirlpool Compass Fountain: This large splash pad with fun jets is a great spot to cool off on a hot day, perfect for kids to play and run around. The fountain shoots water up to 35 feet in the air every 15 minutes.

Ludington

Ludington is a quaint town located on the shores of Lake Michigan with a population of just over 7,000 people.

The town is known for its annual Ludington Area Jaycees Freedom Festival, which has been celebrating the Fourth of July with a parade, carnival rides, and fireworks since 1874.

These are our favorite four things to do when visiting Ludington:

1. Tour a lighthouse: You can’t miss the beautiful black and white Big Sable Point Lighthouse when visiting Ludington. The lighthouse is over feet tall and offers tours from May to October. Be sure to climb to the top for a stunning view of Lake Michigan.

2. Visit Hamlin Lake: This large lake is perfect for swimming, boating, fishing, and more. There are several public beaches around the lake where you can relax in the sun, take a dip in the water or enjoy an amazingly colorful sunset with a picnic dinner.

3. Check out a working elk ranch: Amber Elk Ranch offers covered wagon ride informational tours to the public. The kids will love feeding the elk and seeing the animals up close while learning about the ranching operation.

4. Take in some art: Waterfront Park is popular with families at the edge of Lake Michigan. It has a large play structure, night lighting, restrooms, and an amphitheater for summer concerts that attract visitors of all ages. Take a stroll around the five-acre park’s scenic pathways and learn about history from the nine bronzed sculptures that dot it.

Traverse City

The largest Michigan beach town on our list, Traverse City, has over 15,000 people and is known for its beautiful sandy beaches, wineries, and being the Cherry Capital of the World.

These are our top four things to do when visiting Traverse City:

1. Go cherry-picking: The area around Traverse City is famous for its cherries, and there are several farms where you can pick your own. Be sure to try a slice of cherry pie or some other cherry-themed food while you’re in town – you won’t be disappointed!

2. Visit the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore: This gorgeous area of Michigan features over 35 miles of pristine coastline along Lake Michigan and dune walks, camping, and picnicking. Don’t miss the climb to the top of the dunes for an incredible view.

3. Take a wine tour: With over 40 wineries in the Traverse City area, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to wine tasting. There are several companies that offer tours, so you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the scenery while someone else does the driving. For one of the best wine tasting experiences, try Left Foot Charley.

4. Check out the Village at Grand Traverse Commons: This former mental hospital has been transformed into a unique shopping and dining destination. The buildings have been lovingly restored and now house boutique shops, restaurants, cafes, art galleries, and more. Be sure to explore the grounds – they’re beautiful. For an immersive historical experience, go on a guided walking tour.

Best Day Trips From Chicago

Starved Rock State Park, IL

Distance from Chicago: 93 miles via I-55/I-80 (1 hour 30 minutes)

Starved Rock State Park is about an hour and a half drive from Chicago, in the town of Oglesby, Illinois. The park gets its name from the sandstone cliffs that tower over the canyons and rivers below.

It’s a favorite among hikers, with over 13 miles of trails where you can traverse through canyons and see waterfalls created by melting glaciers. You might even spot a bald eagle or two if you’re lucky.

There are plenty of things to do in the park besides hiking. In the winter, you can go cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. And in the summer, you can cool off with a swim in one of the many swimming holes.

There are also boat tours available that take you through the canyons on the Illinois River.

If you’re looking for a longer trip, there are camping sites available in the park. Or, you can stay in one of the many lodges or cabins that are located nearby.

Galena, IL

Distance from Chicago: 163 miles via I-90/US-20 (2 hours 45 minutes)

Galena is a small city located in northwestern Illinois, about 3 hours from Chicago. It’s known for its stunning bluffs along the Galena River, its rich history dating back to the early 19th century, and warm, welcoming residents.

The city was once a booming lead mining town and was even home to President Ulysses S. Grant. Today, it’s a popular tourist destination for its historic downtown area and its scenic setting in the Driftless Area of Illinois.

While it may be small, Galena certainly packs a punch when it comes to things to do. Stroll down Main Street, lined with over 100 specialty shops, art galleries, and restaurants.

Be sure to stop in at the Galena Canning Company, a family-owned business that has been canning fruits and vegetables for three generations. Their biggest seller is the Apple BBQ Sauce, perfect for summer grilling.

Take a tour of the Ulysses S. Grant Home, or learn about the city’s history at the Galena History Museum. Galena is also home to five wineries, some of which offer tours and tastings. With vineyards nestled in the rolling hills, these wineries offer stunning views along with their delicious wines.

For some outdoor fun, hike around nearby Apple River Canyon State Park or take a Mississippi River Cruise.

Kalamazoo, MI

Distance from Chicago: 147 miles via I-94 (2 hours, 25 minutes)

If you’re looking for something a little more offbeat, consider a trip to Kalamazoo, Michigan. This quirky city is about 2.5 hours from Chicago and is known for its arts scene, craft beer breweries, and unique attractions.

One of the most popular things to do in Kalamazoo is visit one of the many craft breweries. Some of our favorites include Bell’s Brewery, Saugatuck Brewing Company, and the Kalamazoo Beer Exchange. Brewery tours are a great way to learn about the brewing process and taste some delicious beer.

Art lovers will want to check out the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts. The KIA is a world-renowned art museum with a collection of almost 5,000 works of art. Or maybe grab an ice cream and take a stroll to enjoy some of the many outdoor sculptures scattered throughout the city.

Kalamazoo isn’t all city, though! Surrounded by beautiful lakes, parks, and hiking trails, you can go swimming, kayaking, or stand-up paddle boarding on one of the nearby lakes in the summer. Its one of the best hidden gem family vacation spots in the Midwest.

And in the winter, there’s no shortage of outdoor activities either – hit the slopes at Timber Ridge ski area or go cross-country skiing at Fort Custer State Park.

Arthur, IL

Distance from Chicago: 174 miles via I-57 (2 hours 45 minutes)

Located in the heart of Illinois, Arthur is located less than 3 hours south of Chicago and is home to Illinois’ largest and oldest Amish community.

The Amish are a group of religious people who live simple lives without many modern conveniences. They are known for their handcrafted furniture, quilts, and delicious baked goods.

A visit to Amish Country is like stepping back in time. There are no stoplights or billboards, and horse-drawn buggies are a common sight on the roads.

Be sure to explore some of the small towns and see the amazing handiwork of the Amish artisans. You can also take a tour of an Amish farm or go on a horse-drawn buggy ride.

For those looking for a more active experience, there are plenty of options, from hiking and biking trails to canoeing and fishing on Lake Shelbyville. And if you happen to be in town during the summer, the Arthur Strawberry Jam Festival is a must!

Springfield, IL

Distance from Chicago: 201 miles via I-55 (3 hours)

Located just 3 hours from Chicago, Springfield is the capital city of Illinois. The city is known for its many historical sites and museums, including the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, which chronicles the life of America’s 16th president.

Springfield was also home to President Barack Obama during his time as an Illinois state senator.

In addition to its presidential history, Springfield is also home to a number of other interesting attractions. Explore the Dana-Thomas House, designed in 1902 by renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright and one of the best examples of his work.

Shop till you drop on vibrant Sixth Street where you’ll find everything from unique boutiques to mainstream retailers.

For some outdoor fun, hike or bike through one of Springfield’s many parks, including Lincoln Memorial Gardens, with 6 miles of trails around a pond or stop to smell the roses (or any of the other 1800 plants species) at Washington Park Botanical Garden.

And no trip to Springfield would be complete without a stop at Cozy Dog Drive In, the home of the original corn dog in operation since 1946!

Kankakee, IL

Distance from Chicago: 60 miles via I-57 (1 hour)

Just an hour south of Chicago, Kankakee is a small city with a number of historical sites, including the Kankakee Railroad Museum, which chronicles the history of the local railroads.

Architectural buffs will enjoy the B. Harley Bradley House, designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright, along with the many custom-built Victorian era homes along the riverfront.

Kankakee is also a great place for nature lovers. The Kankakee River Trail is a 10-mile walking path perfect for a leisurely stroll or to go for a run.

Look for the Rock Creek Suspension Bridge, originally built in 1929, which spans 75 feet across the river at a height of about 75 feet.

For a more active experience, rent a kayak or canoe and paddle down the river, or try catching dinner on a fly fishing tour.

Rockford, IL

Distance from Chicago: 89 miles via I-90 (1 hour 35 minutes)

Just a short drive from Chicago, Rockford is the third largest city in Illinois and the county seat of Winnebago County.

The city is home to several historical sites, including the Midway Village Museum, which chronicles the area’s history from the days of the Native Americans through the present day.

Rockford is also a great place for nature lovers with its many parks and trails, including Sinnissippi Park, situated along the Rock River. The park is perfect for hiking, biking, fishing, or just enjoying a picnic lunch.

Be sure to stop by the Nicholas Conservatory & Gardens to enjoy its orchid gardens and butterfly house.

Families will want to check out the Burpee Museum of Natural History. Open since 1942; this museum is home to a wide variety of exhibits, including a hands-on discovery center for kids. Spend an afternoon learning about dinosaurs, mammals, and reptiles from around the world.

Holland, MI

Distance from Chicago: 152 miles viaI-94E & I-196 (2 hours 30 minutes)

Holland is a charming city situated on the shores of Lake Michigan, about 2.5 hours from Chicago. This quaint town is known for its Dutch heritage and culture and feels like you’ve been transported to the Netherlands.

It’s home to a number of Dutch-themed attractions, including the Dutch Village, which features a replica of a traditional Dutch windmill. Visitors can also take a tour of the Windmill Island Gardens to learn about the history of the area’s Dutch settlers.

Holland is also known for its tulips! Every April to May, the city celebrates Tulip Time with parades, music, and plenty of tulips. Be sure to check out Veldheer’s Tulip Garden, one of the largest tulip gardens in the country with over 850 varieties and 6 million tulips in bloom.

Lake Geneva, WI

Distance from Chicago: 82 miles via I-94W & WI-50 (1 hour 30 minutes)

This charming Wisconsin lakeside town is known for its stunning views, clear blue waters, and friendly residents; no wonder it’s one of the best midwest lake vacation destinations!

While parks like the Grand Canyon or the Great Smoky Mountains attract millions of visitors every year, there are many more places in the United States’ national parks system that don’t nearly get the attention they deserve.

Home to 63 national parks, the United States has many incredible natural places to visit that offer exceptional outdoor destinations. Most people tend to lean towards visiting the most iconic ones, but with so many on the list, there are a few that don’t really see as many visitors, either because they’re somewhat remote or simply because they are rarely marketed.

Whether you’ve been to the popular national parks already, missed out on timed reservations at the most popular parks, or you’re simply looking to do something a little bit different, here’s a list of some seriously underrated national parks you’ve got to visit!

9 National Parks You May Have Never Heard Of

1. Dry Tortugas National Park

Location: Florida

If white sandy beaches and sapphire blue waters sound like your idea of a perfect vacation, you don’t need to visit the Caribbean or the Maldives in order to get just that!

Chances are you haven’t heard of Dry Tortugas National Park, and that’s totally okay – even most Floridians don’t know about it!

Dry Tortugas remains a hidden gem in Florida due to the fact that getting there isn’t exactly the easiest of tasks. In order to reach this national park, you’ll either need to take a ferry from Key West or a seaplane, which pretty much guarantees you’ll get the park almost all to yourself!

This national park is actually made up of 99% water, with only 1% of it being set on land. In order to explore the underwater side of Dry Tortugas, you can snorkel or dive to see colorful coral reefs and insane amounts of marine life thriving and kicking.

Entrance Fee: $15 per person (over 16 years of age) good for 7 days – included in ferry ticket from Key West, or pay on arrival cash if coming via seaplane. Camping is additional and must be pre-booked.

Operating Season: Open 24 hours throughout the year, although some islands are seasonally closed for breeding. Note hurricane season warnings may also be in effect from June to November.

2. Isle Royale National Park

Location: Michigan

Isle Royale is located in the middle of Lake Superior in the state of Michigan. While this may not sound like much, its location is pretty remote, which means the only way to reach this park is via seaplane or boat.

Despite the unbeatable beauty the landscapes at Isle Royale boast, it still remains pretty untouched by tourism, which means the nature and scenery you’ll find here are as raw as they can get. (In 2021 it was the 7th least-visited National Park in the US – and the second least-visited in the lower 48!)

Isle Royal harbors tons of amazing things to do, ranging from glorious hiking trials to scuba diving adventures. Moreover, there are also plenty of historic lighthouses and copper mining sites to explore in case you also want to get a dose of history on your national park visit.

A few highlights of visiting include scuba diving or snorkeling in order to see actual shipwrecks, hitting a few hiking trails, or spending a day or two canoeing and kayaking in order to explore the many islands that make up the park.

Entrance Fee: $7 per person, per day (ages 16 and up); Annual passes available for $60 (covering groups up to 4) or covered with America the Beautiful and other annual passes. If you don’t have your own boat you will also be paying for a ferry or private transportation.

Operating Season: Isle Royale National Park is open from April 16 through October 31. The island is closed from November 1 through April 15 annually due to extreme winter weather conditions. 

3. Voyageurs National Park

Location: Minnesota

Located almost on the Canadian Border in Minnesota, Voyageurs is one of the best-kept secrets of the northern United States, having received less than 300,000 visitors even during its busiest year!

The park is made up of a series of waterways that are interconnected, as well as several lakes. In fact, over 40 percent of the park is set on the water!

Voyageurs also offers the unique chance to see the Northern Lights, something that is not very common in the United States other than in Alaska. This makes Voyageurs a must if you’ve always wanted to see the aurora borealis but don’t necessarily want to leave the Lower 48.

Aside from offering all sorts of water activities like boating, fishing, kayaking, houseboats, and just about everything in between, Voyageurs also offers tons of adventures you can enjoy on foot. Hiking is prime here, and camping is pretty much out of this world, considering Voyageurs offers some of the clearest night skies in the country.

Moreover, wildlife spotting is a real treat here, with species like bears, foxes, and wolves commonly spotted inside the park, especially around the Gold Portage area, which you can reach on a canoe!

Entrance Fee: Free! (camping and houseboat permits are required, as well as boat tour reservation fees apply).

Operating Season: Year-round. Summer is boating whilst in winter, the park is transformed into a frozen lake making for a great Minnesota road trip. Icy conditions can make the park inaccessible in the should seasons, so bear weather warnings in mind.

4. Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve

Location: Colorado

Sand dunes probably aren’t the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Colorado, which makes this park even more special than it already is!

This national park homes the tallest sand dunes in North America, some of which rise higher than 700 feet! While that makes Great Sand Dunes incredible enough to visit, when you add the fact that these sand dunes are towered over 14,000 feet snow-capped peaks, you’re guaranteed a contrast of landscapes that feels almost out of this world.

During your visit, you’ll get to stand over the tallest sand dune in North America, sled down enormous dunes, go on a 4×4 drive across the desert, and camp under a billion stars (this national park offers incredible night skies!).

Entrance Fee: $25 per private vehicle valid for 7 days

Operating Season: Open 24/7 throughout the year but do take note of potential adverse weather from fall to spring. Some campgrounds closed in winter due to frigid conditions.

5. New River Gorge National Park

Location: West Virginia

Having only received its national park status in 2021, New River Gorge is fresh on everyone’s radar.

The park is far from unvisited, especially considering it received over a million visits in 2021. Still, however, for most people outside West Virginia, it still remains a shiny new park to check out in the system.

New River Gorge is mostly made up of an Appalachian canyon that offers plenty of opportunities to explore the 70,000 acres of land the park encompassed. From climbing on sandstone cliffs to going whitewater rafting to hiking, you’ll hardly get bored while exploring this brand new national park.

Entrance Fee: Free

Operating Season: Open year-round

6. Black Canyon of the Gunnison

Location: Colorado

Often nicknamed the “Grand Canyon of the Rocky Mountains”, this massive canyon plunges a whopping 3,000 feet down into the ground.

The entire scenery you’ll find at Black Canyon of the Gunnison will make you feel almost as if you traveled back in time to the dinosaur era. One of the things that is extremely unique about the Black Canyon is the fact that, due to its deepness, the walls of the canyon only see 33 minutes of sun every day. This is why it received that name!

Driving the park’s Rim Drive is one of the easiest ways to explore this unique national park. The drive offers 12 scenic lookout points to the canyon, from where you’ll be able to get an idea of how deep it actually is. Other ways to explore are by going on a whitewater rafting adventure or canoeing in order to get an up-close view of the canyon.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even hike down to the bottom of the canyon. This trail takes about 5 hours to complete and is considered pretty challenging, but worth the effort as you’ll get a brand new perspective of the canyon. There’s actually a campsite at the bottom of Black Canyon in case you’re feeling up for a night of a lifetime!

Entrance Fee: $30 private vehicle pass valid for 7 days.

Operating Season: year-round. Winter open daily from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM (Temporary weather closures possible), Spring open daily from 9:00 Am to 4:00 PM. Summer open daily 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

7. Wrangell-St. Elias National Park

Location: Alaska

Covering over 13 million acres of land, Wrangell-St. Elias is the largest national park in the United States and also one of the least visited with only about 70,000 visitors every year. In fact, you’ll probably see more animals like wolves, moose, and grizzly bears than you will see people!

Home to four mountain ranges, some of the tallest peaks in the country, and the biggest system of glaciers in the country, Wrangell St. Elias wins plenty of prizes when it comes to adventures to offer!

Here, you’ll be treated to plenty of scenic roads to drive over, get the chance to go whitewater rafting over an extremely unique landscape, and even hike or go ice climbing over a humongous glacier called Root Glacier. There’s also an amazing backpacking trail known as the Skolai Pass, which offers views of the canyon, waterfalls, and more.

Entrance Fee: Free!

Operating Season: No entrance stations and it is public land so theoretically open year-round, but the season really only runs mid-May to mid-September for accessibility.

8. Guadalupe Mountains National Park

Location: Texas

Guadalupe Mountains National Park is home to the tallest mountain in Texas, expansive deserts, gorgeous canyons, and seas of sand dunes, making it a mecca for those keen to explore the wilderness in a desertic setting.

Plus, Guadalupe Mountains is extra interesting if you’re into paleontology. Because the region was once submerged underwater, it’s possible to see a lot of fossils of reefs and ancient marine animals encapsulated in the rocks all over the park.

Entrance Fee: $10 per person (over 16 years old) valid for 7 consecutive days.

Operating Season: Year-round.

9. Biscayne National Park

Location: Florida

If you want a mix of beach and nature on your next national park visit, Biscayne National Park has the best of both worlds.

This national park is located at the start of the alluring Florida Keys. The park is actually set 95% underwater, which means you need to swim, dive, or snorkel in order to see most of its highlights. If you’re not too keen on doing that, though, there are also glass-bottom boats available, from where you can see some of what’s underneath the water.

Of course, exploring on land is also an option, with several islands spread out all over the park that make up the remaining 5% of it. You can either take a hike, search for wildlife, or simply relax over the white sandy beaches of Biscayne!

Entrance Fee: Free entry but $25 per night to camp. Boat tours and snorkeling trips will be charged separately.

Operating Season: Open 24 hours year round.

If you truly want to beat the crowds and up for an adventure, these were the least visited parks in 2021, according to the National Parks Service

It’s no surprise that most of these are pretty remote; inaccessible to most vehicles, you’ll need combinations of boats, light aircraft, and helicopters to get to these incredible protected lands – and in many cases, a fair bit of cash!
