1. Oklahoma Scenic Drives: Wichita Mountains Scenic Byway 

• Distance: 38 miles 
• Time Needed: At least 1 hour 

This scenic loop takes travelers through the heart of the Wichita Mountains in southwestern Oklahoma. The drive begins and ends near the town of Medicine Park, which is a charming place to stop for lunch in the cobblestoned downtown area. 

Although it’s called the Wichita Mountains Scenic Byway, this relatively short drive doesn’t just have mountains but boasts an incredible variation in landscape, making it one of the most diverse scenic drives in Oklahoma. You’ll get to see mixed-grass prairie, mountain vistas, and picturesque lakes in under 40 miles of road. 

The Wichita Mountains are known for their wildlife viewing opportunities, and it’s very likely you’ll be able to spot some of the common animals like bison, prairie dogs, and elk. You might even get lucky and see a coyote! 

There are lots of great hiking opportunities in the Wichita Mountains, with everything from short strolls to routes meant for climbing experts. Near the byway, some fun, easy trails are perfect for families who want to get out of the car and explore, including Elk Mountain Trail and some of the trails around Treasure Lake.

2. Oklahoma Scenic Drives: Route 66

• Distance: 375 miles
• Time Needed: 6 hours or more, depending on stops

Often referred to as the “Mother Road” of the United States, Route 66 is one of the most famous drives in America and one of the best routes for road trips in Oklahoma. Crossing the state east to west, Oklahoma actually has the longest stretch of Route 66 out of any state!

Some parts of Route 66 in Oklahoma are now larger highways, but other portions take you through lesser-traveled areas and small towns with vintage diners and other historic attractions. Route 66 is full of quirky and unique places, and it’s worth planning on stopping to get photos or check out some of the sites. 

The town of Arcadia is home to the famous “Round Barn” which has become an iconic attraction of the drive. Today, this historic building has a museum and a gift shop where you can pick up a Route 66 souvenir.

3. Oklahoma Scenic Drives: Osage Nation Heritage Trail Byway

One of the newer scenic byways in Oklahoma, the Osage Nation Heritage Trail Byway, was officially recognized in 2019. It crosses through the Osage Nation’s land, with stops along the way marking important landmarks or points of cultural interest for the nation. 

For animal-enthusiastic kids, the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve is a must-visit site on the drive. This enormous preserve is the largest tallgrass prairie not only in America but in the entire world and is the home of huge herds of bison. There’s a separate 15-mile scenic loop through the prairie to see the bison up close, as well as hiking trails and a visitor center. 

The town of Pawhuska is close to the preserve and is the capital of the Osage Nation. It’s a fun place to stop to check out local stores selling handmade artwork and learn about the nation’s heritage. The Osage Tribal Museum in Pawhuska has interesting exhibitions detailing the nation’s history and displays of important cultural artifacts. 

This route is located in northern Oklahoma and is an excellent option for people looking for the best drives in Oklahoma, a bit off the beaten tourist path. 

When to go: Any time of year is good, but spring through fall is when you can catch seasonal festivals or events in Pawhuska. 

4. Oklahoma Scenic Drives: Cherokee Hills Scenic Byway 

• Distance: 84 miles
• Time Needed: 2 hours or more

Located in the northeastern part of the state in the foothills of the Ozarks, the Cherokee Hills are considered one of the most scenic places in Oklahoma, thanks to the diversity of mountain passes, waterfalls, and rivers. 

This is also one of the less-driven scenic drives in Oklahoma and is a perfect opportunity to get out and enjoy nature. 

Running beside the Illinois River, the drive takes you through important regions of the Cherokee Nation and passes by numerous historic landmarks, especially in Tahlequah, which is the capital of the Nation. A visit to the Cherokee Heritage Center is a great stop to learn about the Nation’s history and the Trail of Tears before you head out of the city and into the wilderness areas of this Oklahoma scenic byway. 

The Cherokee Hills drive passes right by Lake Tenkiller, considered one of the gems of Oklahoma and a great spot for water activities of all kinds, including boating, fishing, swimming, and even scuba diving! When to go: Summer is best for water activities, but any time of year is beautiful to take this drive.

5. Oklahoma Scenic Drives: Talimena National Scenic Byway 

• Distance: 55 miles 
• Time Needed: 2 hours or more 

One of the most popular routes for road trips in Oklahoma, the Talimena National Scenic Byway actually crosses back and forth along the Arkansas-Oklahoma border. Cruising along the ridges of the Ouachita Mountains, this spectacular drive has jaw-dropping vistas practically around every curve! 

There are no less than 22 overlooks will pull-off points and three state parks along the drive, giving you plenty of opportunities to get out, take photographs, or go hiking. Even though the drive can be done in as little as 1.5 hours if you don’t stop, many travelers will take two or even three days to camp, hike, and explore. 

Talimena State Park is the primary attraction of the drive, with opportunities for mountain biking, hiking, camping, and horseback riding. The park has tenting campgrounds, an RV site, and picnic areas with running water, grills, fire rings, and a playground. 

When to go: Fall is considered the best time of year to drive the Talimena National Scenic Byway since the mountains are lit up in bright autumn colors. Spring is when the flowers are in bloom, and summer is good for outdoor activities like hiking and biking. Winter is possible, but driving can sometimes become dangerous because of snow accumulation. 

6. Oklahoma Scenic Drives: Route 8 Parks 

• Distance: 35 miles 
• Time Needed: 1 hour or more 

The entire length of Route 8 crosses Oklahoma from north to south and is about 180 miles long, but the most scenic portion of the drive is between Watonga and Hinton. This is one of the best scenic drives near Oklahoma City and makes an excellent day trip if you’re already in the city. 

Red Rock Canyon Adventure Park and Roman Nose State Park are the two top attractions of the drive, both of which feature spectacular Oklahoma scenery. 

Red Rock Canyon is an excellent, family-friendly park with great hiking trails like the Rough Horsetail Nature Trail or the California Road Nature Trail, which both have interpretive signs. There’s also a seasonal outdoor pool, a picnic shelter, a fishing pond, and activities like rock climbing. 

Roman Nose State Park is located near Watonga and is known for its gypsum rock canyons and natural springs. In addition to the trails and wilderness areas, the park has a lodge, an onsite pool, and a golf course.

Several cabins are also available for rent, as well as a campground and RV sites. Spots at Roman Nose tend to fill up quickly in the summer, so if you’re hoping to stay at this state park, it’s best to make a reservation in advance.

It goes without saying that the scenery along its 113 miles is as spectacular as it gets. Each and every mile, you’ll be treated to beautiful ocean views and white sand beaches as you make your way to Key West. 

While the trip can be completed in less than a day, it’s recommended to spend several days on this trip as there are plenty of incredible destinations worth making a stop at to explore. Top highlights include Key Largo, Islamorada, Bahia Honda State Park, and the underwater John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. 

The best time of the year to do this southern states road trip is between March and May when hurricane season is over and the winter crowds have tapered off. 

2. Skyline Drive, Virginia 

Starting in Richmond, the Skyline Drive will have you seeing some of the best the state of Virginia has to offer as you make your way to the heart of the Appalachian Mountains.

The best time to do the Skyline Drive is September through November, when the park gets wrapped up in gorgeous fall foliage. 

3. Chipley to Rainbow Springs State Park, Florida 

If you’re up for a few days spent chasing waterfalls, this southern states road trip through Florida is guaranteed to please. 

Starting in Chipley Falling Waters State Park, you’ll make your way all the way to Rainbow Springs State Park. Along the route, you’ll get to see the highest waterfalls in Florida, gaze at plenty of natural sinkholes, and spend a few hours exploring Torreya State Park.

Moreover, you’ll also get the option to stop at plenty of other parks such as the Big Shoals State Park and Devil’s Millhopper Geological State Park, where you’ll be able to see a series of waterfalls crashing down into a sinkhole that contains an actual mini rainforest!  

This road trip can be done any time of the year but keep in mind that the summer months are usually the warmest and wettest. With that said, summers are when the waterfalls look the most impressive due to the rain, so take your pick! 

4. Pineywoods Autumn Trail, Texas 

Vineyards, fairytale-like forests, and autumn colors are the staples of the Pineywood Autumn Trail in Texas. 

While it’s much lesser known than other southern states road trip routes, this 145-mile loop between Palestine and Athens will have you passing plenty of forests and parks worth making a stop at to take a walk and truly take in the golden and crimson tones. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also fly above the fall foliage at Texas ZipLine Adventures! 

As if that weren’t enough, Pineywood is also dotted by tons of idyllic lakes and vineyards. This route includes the Tara Vineyard & Winery for those keen to get a taste of Texas’s hidden wine country, but if you still haven’t gotten your fill of grapes, you can continue the road trip onwards over the Piney Woods Wine Trail, which is dotted by over 20 wineries.  

Autumn is definitely the best time to do this road trip, especially considering it’s a mecca for fall hues. If you’re unable to do it at this time of the year, spring is another great choice for mild weather and colorful blooms. 

5. Tuscaloosa to Eutaw, Alabama 

If you love all things vintage, artsy vibes, places that feel as local as they get, and historical architecture, this Alabama scenic road trip is everything you’ve been looking for. 

As you make your way from Tuscaloosa to Eutaw in West Alameda, you’ll pass plenty of antique shops, art galleries galore, and a plethora of antebellum mansions, not to mention you’ll also get the chance to make a few detours. 

A few highlights of this road trip include the Courthouse Square in Eutaw, the lakes that surround the town of Livingston, and getting to drive over the Alamuchee-Bellamy Covered Bridge, a wooden bridge that is said to be haunted by an outlaw who was hanged there! 

Spring and fall are the best time of the year to do this road trip as the weather is mild and comfortable. Summers are also pleasant for warm-weather lovers, although this is the high season in Alabama and cities like Tuscaloosa can get pretty crowded. 

6. Haunted Oklahoma, Oklahoma 

Love all things haunted? If you consider yourself a bit of a daredevil, this deep south road trip is definitely one to remember!  

This sensational road trip travels through some of Oklahoma’s most haunted cities, including Tulsa, Ponca City, Alva, and El Reno before looping its way back to Oklahoma City. 

All of these spots are great to spend the night in, but the main reason to visit them is to check out a few of its most haunted buildings. Highlights in Tulsa include the Gandini’s Circus in Edmond, an abandoned carnival, the Hex House, and Cain’s Ballroom.

In Ponca City, visit the Constantine Theater & Poncan Theater, which are said to be incredibly haunted and don’t forget to check out the Cherokee Strip Museum in Alva, which is believed to be extremely ghost-ridden. 

The best time to do this Oklahoma road trip is from late March to early June and September to November when the weather is temperate. Bonus points if you do it in late October for Halloween! 

7. Outer Banks Scenic Byway, North Carolina 

Starting in Nags Head, this scenic byway runs all the way to Ocracoke Island and back to the mainland (yes, a ferry journey is included here!). 

As one of the most iconic routes in North Carolina, this road trip in the southern US is a great addition to your bucket list, taking you through one of the most popular vacation destinations on the US east coast. 

Along the way, you’ll get to visit Bodie Island, Cape Hatteras, and if you like hiking, you can also spend a few hours exploring the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. Ocracoke Island is another must-do stop for beautiful beaches, and if you’re feeling up for a day trip, you can hire a boat to the alluring Portsmouth Island.  

The best time of the year to do this road trip is between April to mid-June and early September to late October. 

8. Haunted Louisiana, Louisiana 

Another of the best southern USA road trips for those who love all things spooky, this incredible route will have you checking out some of the most beautiful (and haunted) sites in a state that is already infamous for its paranormal activity. 

The route begins in Keachi and ends in Fort Proctor, following mostly the I-49. Along the way, you’ll get to make stops at deserted schools, sugar plantations, and plenty of mills. There’s even an abandoned Six Flax on the way – it’s illegal to enter the premises, but even the sight from the road is enough to send chills down your spine! 

Must-do stops include Laurel Valley Sugar Plantation, Fort Proctor, Elise Reuss Memorial School, Charles Boldt Paper Mill, Kisatchie High School, and Keachi Women’s College.  

Louisiana is best visited between mid-February to early May and from October to December for mild weather. This road trip is a great idea for a Halloween adventure, or you can combine it with a Mardi Gras trip in February instead! 

9. Tennessee Waterfalls Road Trip, Tennessee 

If you love nature and all things waterfalls, the Tennessee Waterfalls route is one of the best southern road trips to take for outdoor adventures. 

This gorgeous drive will show you some of the best the Great Smoky Mountains have to offer. The drive starts at Cumming Falls on the Blackburn Fork State Scenic River, where you can freshen up and swim before continuing to Burgess Falls to check out four different waterfalls.

1. Oklahoma City

While there’s a ton to do all over the city, one of the places you can’t miss out on visiting is the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, where you’ll find displays and collections of Western art and artifacts that promote the conservation of American West traditions and culture. For more Western goodness, head to the American Banjo Museum next, whose name is self-explanatory!

Another can’t-miss landmark is the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum, where visitors can honor the victims of the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in 1995. The museum was created on the exact spot where the bombarded building used to stand and details the tragic events that pay tribute to the 168 people who perished on that dreadful day.

For history and architectural buffs, make sure not to miss out on visiting the Oklahoma City State Capitol, where you’ll find lavish Greco-Roman-style architecture complete with marble stairs, hand-painted ceilings, and a grand dome!

Last but not least is the Guthrie Historic District, which is 32 miles away from OKC but totally worth the detour. This National Historic Landmark is home to over 2,000 buildings from the 1800s and early 1900s that are perfectly preserved and restored.

2. Chickasaw National Recreation Area

Made up of two adjoining parks (Platt National Park and Arbuckle Recreation Area), Chickasaw National Recreation Area is a go-to for Oklahoma residents to enjoy nature.

The park homes beautiful lakes, natural freshwater springs, and lots of wildlife and interesting flora. The park’s name actually translates into “The Peaceful Valley of Rippling Waters”, and once you get there, you’ll see exactly why it got that name!

3. Tahlequah

If you want to experience authentic Native American heritage, there’s no better place to head to than Tahlequah. This city is located in the heart of the Cherokee Nation and provides a superb chance for visitors to learn about their culture and honor their painful history.

One of the things you can’t miss out on doing while visiting Tahlequah is checking out the National Cherokee Capitol. This building was constructed in 1867 after the original wooden one was burned in a fire during the Civil War.

Today, the building is still in use and currently homes the Cherokee County courthouse and the Cherokee National History Museum. Here, you’ll find exhibits and artifacts that tell the stories of Cherokee life and culture before colonization.

Moreover, Tahlequah is part of the Trail of Tears, a route the Five Tribes (Cherokees, Creeks, Choctaws, Chickasaw, and Seminoles) were pushed to follow when they were forced out of their lands in Alabama, Tennessee, and Georgia back in the 1830s. They followed the trail on foot, wagons, and horses, with the journey ending in Indian Territory (what we know as Oklahoma today).

4. Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge

Tucked away in the heart of the Wichita Mountains, this wildlife refuge encircles over 60,000 acres of ancient granite mountains, lakes, and prairies, providing a safe haven for several species of animals that visitors are able to spot frequently.

During your visit, you’ll get to see species like Rocky Mountain Elk, longhorn, and tons of herds of bison, who seem to have made the refuge their favorite hangout spot!

This park houses over 300 acres of pristine sand hills, all of which provide the perfect chance to go buggy riding – an experience guaranteed to deliver tons of fun for kids and adults alike. As a fun fact, the park is often referred to as “Oklahoma’s Bermuda Triangle” because there have been unexplained disappearances here since the Spanish colonization.

After getting your fit of sand dune fun, Beaver Dunes Park is also a fantastic place for hiking on the sand, fishing, and camping. Stargazing here is an absolute treat, so we highly recommend spending the night if time allows!
