A lot of travelers pass through Oklahoma, but not everyone realizes how much there is to see and explore in the state.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Bringing together the rugged feel of the Wild West with serene forests and peaceful rivers, these Oklahoma scenic drives are waiting for you!</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="https://www.familyroadtrip.co/tag/scenic-drives/"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="1024" height="256" src="https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/US-Scenic-Drives-Button.png" alt="Scenic Drives in Every US state - click here to learn more" class="wp-image-13301" srcset="https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/US-Scenic-Drives-Button.png 1024w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/US-Scenic-Drives-Button-300x75.png 300w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/US-Scenic-Drives-Button-768x192.png 768w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/US-Scenic-Drives-Button-150x38.png 150w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">1. Oklahoma Scenic Drives: Wichita Mountains Scenic Byway&nbsp;</h2>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong></strong><strong>Distance: </strong>38 miles&nbsp;</li>

<li><strong></strong><strong>Time Needed: </strong>At least 1 hour&nbsp;</li>
</ul>

<p>This scenic loop takes travelers through the heart of the Wichita Mountains in southwestern Oklahoma. The drive begins and ends near the town of <a href="https://medicinepark.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Medicine Park</a>, which is a charming place to stop for lunch in the cobblestoned downtown area.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/USA-Scenic-Drives-in-Oklahoma-Wichita-Mountains-1024x683.jpg" alt="USA Scenic Drives in Oklahoma - Wichita Mountains" class="wp-image-12275" srcset="https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/USA-Scenic-Drives-in-Oklahoma-Wichita-Mountains-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/USA-Scenic-Drives-in-Oklahoma-Wichita-Mountains-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/USA-Scenic-Drives-in-Oklahoma-Wichita-Mountains-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/USA-Scenic-Drives-in-Oklahoma-Wichita-Mountains-150x100.jpg 150w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/USA-Scenic-Drives-in-Oklahoma-Wichita-Mountains.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>
</div>

<p>Although it’s called the Wichita Mountains Scenic Byway, this relatively short drive doesn’t just have mountains but boasts an incredible variation in landscape, making it one of the most diverse scenic drives in Oklahoma. You’ll get to see mixed-grass prairie, mountain vistas, and picturesque lakes in under 40 miles of road.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Wichita Mountains are <a href="https://www.travelok.com/listings/view.profile/id.8525" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">known for their wildlife</a> viewing opportunities, and it’s very likely you’ll be able to spot some of the common animals like bison, prairie dogs, and elk. You might even get lucky and see a coyote!&nbsp;</p>

<p>There are lots of great hiking opportunities in the Wichita Mountains, with everything from short strolls to routes meant for climbing experts. Near the byway, some fun, easy trails are perfect for families who want to get out of the car and explore, including Elk Mountain Trail and some of the trails around Treasure Lake.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>When to go: </strong>Any time of year is good, but spring and fall tend to be best. Temperatures are more moderate, and in spring, you’ll see the wildflowers; in fall, the mountains are full of autumn foliage.&nbsp;</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">2. Oklahoma Scenic Drives: Route 66</h2>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong></strong><strong>Distance:</strong> 375 miles</li>

<li><strong>Time Needed: </strong>6 hours or more, depending on stops</li>
</ul>

<p>Often referred to as the <a href="https://www.fhwa.dot.gov/infrastructure/back0303.cfm" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">“Mother Road” of the United States</a>, Route 66 is one of the most famous drives in America and one of the best routes for road trips in Oklahoma. Crossing the state east to west, Oklahoma actually has the longest stretch of Route 66 out of any state!</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/USA-Scenic-Drives-in-Oklahoma-Route-66-1024x683.jpg" alt="USA Scenic Drives in Oklahoma - Route 66" class="wp-image-13903" srcset="https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/USA-Scenic-Drives-in-Oklahoma-Route-66-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/USA-Scenic-Drives-in-Oklahoma-Route-66-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/USA-Scenic-Drives-in-Oklahoma-Route-66-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/USA-Scenic-Drives-in-Oklahoma-Route-66-150x100.jpg 150w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/USA-Scenic-Drives-in-Oklahoma-Route-66.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>
</div>

<p>Some parts of Route 66 in Oklahoma are now larger highways, but other portions take you through lesser-traveled areas and small towns with vintage diners and other historic attractions. Route 66 is full of quirky and unique places, and it’s worth planning on stopping to get photos or check out some of the sites.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The town of Arcadia is home to the famous “<a href="https://www.travelok.com/listings/view.profile/id.6497" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Round Barn</a>” which has become an iconic attraction of the drive. Today, this historic building has a museum and a gift shop where you can pick up a Route 66 souvenir.&nbsp;</p>

<p>If you want to learn more about the history of Route 66 and its importance in westward expansion in the United States, stop by the <a href="https://visitelkcity.com/the-national-route-66-and-transportation-museum/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National Route 66 Museum in Elk City</a>. The museum has some fun interactive exhibits to entertain young kids.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>When to go: </strong>Any time of year is good.</p>

<li><strong></strong><strong>Distance: </strong>65 miles&nbsp;</li>

<li><strong></strong><strong>Time Needed: </strong>1.5 hours or more</li>

<p>One of the newer scenic byways in Oklahoma, the Osage Nation Heritage Trail Byway, was officially recognized in 2019. It crosses through the Osage Nation’s land, with stops along the way marking important landmarks or points of cultural interest for the nation.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/USA-Scenic-Drives-in-Oklahoma-Tallgrass-Prairie-Preserve-1024x683.jpg" alt="USA Scenic Drives in Oklahoma - Tallgrass Prairie Preserve" class="wp-image-12272" srcset="https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/USA-Scenic-Drives-in-Oklahoma-Tallgrass-Prairie-Preserve-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/USA-Scenic-Drives-in-Oklahoma-Tallgrass-Prairie-Preserve-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/USA-Scenic-Drives-in-Oklahoma-Tallgrass-Prairie-Preserve-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/USA-Scenic-Drives-in-Oklahoma-Tallgrass-Prairie-Preserve-150x100.jpg 150w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/USA-Scenic-Drives-in-Oklahoma-Tallgrass-Prairie-Preserve.jpg 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>
</div>

<p>For animal-enthusiastic kids, the <a href="https://www.travelok.com/listings/view.profile/id.7647" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tallgrass Prairie Preserve</a> is a must-visit site on the drive. This enormous preserve is the largest tallgrass prairie not only in America but in the entire world and is the home of huge herds of bison. There’s a separate 15-mile scenic loop through the prairie to see the bison up close, as well as hiking trails and a visitor center.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The <a href="https://www.travelok.com/pawhuska" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">town of Pawhuska</a> is close to the preserve and is the capital of the Osage Nation. It’s a fun place to stop to check out local stores selling handmade artwork and learn about the nation’s heritage. The <a href="https://www.travelok.com/listings/view.profile/id.5604" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Osage Tribal Museum</a> in Pawhuska has interesting exhibitions detailing the nation&#8217;s history and displays of important cultural artifacts.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This route is located in northern Oklahoma and is an excellent option for people looking for the best drives in Oklahoma, a bit off the beaten tourist path.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>When to go: </strong>Any time of year is good, but spring through fall is when you can catch seasonal festivals or events in Pawhuska.&nbsp;</p>
</div></div>

<div class="wp-block-group"><div class="wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained">
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">4. Oklahoma Scenic Drives: Cherokee Hills Scenic Byway&nbsp;</h2>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong></strong><strong>Distance: </strong>84 miles</li>

<li><strong>Time Needed: </strong>2 hours or more</li>
</ul>

<p>Located in the northeastern part of the state in the foothills of the Ozarks, the Cherokee Hills are considered one of the most scenic places in Oklahoma, thanks to the diversity of mountain passes, waterfalls, and rivers.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/USA-Scenic-Drives-in-Oklahoma-Natural-Falls-State-Park-1024x683.jpg" alt="USA Scenic Drives in Oklahoma - Natural Falls State Park" class="wp-image-12273" srcset="https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/USA-Scenic-Drives-in-Oklahoma-Natural-Falls-State-Park-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/USA-Scenic-Drives-in-Oklahoma-Natural-Falls-State-Park-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/USA-Scenic-Drives-in-Oklahoma-Natural-Falls-State-Park-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/USA-Scenic-Drives-in-Oklahoma-Natural-Falls-State-Park-150x100.jpg 150w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/USA-Scenic-Drives-in-Oklahoma-Natural-Falls-State-Park.jpg 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>
</div>

<p>This is also one of the less-driven scenic drives in Oklahoma and is a perfect opportunity to get out and enjoy nature.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Running beside the Illinois River, the drive takes you through important regions of the Cherokee Nation and passes by numerous historic landmarks, especially in Tahlequah, which is the capital of the Nation. A visit to the Cherokee Heritage Center is a great stop to learn about the Nation’s history and the Trail of Tears before you head out of the city and into the wilderness areas of this Oklahoma scenic byway.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Cherokee Hills drive passes right by <a href="https://www.travelok.com/articles/lake-tenkiller-trio" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lake Tenkiller</a>, considered one of the gems of Oklahoma and a great spot for water activities of all kinds, including boating, fishing, swimming, and even scuba diving! There are also cabins and campsites around the lake if you want to spend more time enjoying the pristine blue waters and hiking trails up to the high rocky bluffs.&nbsp;</p>

<p><a href="https://www.travelok.com/state-parks/natural-falls-state-park" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Natural Falls State Park</a> is another awesome place to visit on road trips in Oklahoma, passing through the eastern part of the state. As you might be able to guess from the name, this state park has some of Oklahoma’s most famous waterfalls, the tallest of which is 77 feet! The park has great hiking trails and well-maintained campsites with facilities like showers and playgrounds, making it a great family-friendly place to spend a few nights in nature.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>When to go: </strong>Summer is best for water activities, but any time of year is beautiful to take this drive.</p>
</div></div>

<div class="wp-block-group"><div class="wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained">
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">5. Oklahoma Scenic Drives: Talimena National Scenic Byway&nbsp;</h2>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong></strong><strong>Distance: </strong>55 miles&nbsp;</li>

<li><strong>Time Needed: </strong>2 hours or more&nbsp;</li>
</ul>

<p>One of the most popular routes for road trips in Oklahoma, the Talimena National Scenic Byway actually crosses back and forth along the <a href="https://www.familyroadtrip.co/best-scenic-drives-in-arkansas/">Arkansas</a>-Oklahoma border. Cruising along the ridges of the Ouachita Mountains, this spectacular drive has jaw-dropping vistas practically around every curve!&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/USA-Scenic-Drives-in-Oklahoma-Ouachita-Mountains-1024x683.jpg" alt="USA Scenic Drives in Oklahoma - Ouachita Mountains" class="wp-image-12271" srcset="https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/USA-Scenic-Drives-in-Oklahoma-Ouachita-Mountains-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/USA-Scenic-Drives-in-Oklahoma-Ouachita-Mountains-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/USA-Scenic-Drives-in-Oklahoma-Ouachita-Mountains-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/USA-Scenic-Drives-in-Oklahoma-Ouachita-Mountains-150x100.jpg 150w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/USA-Scenic-Drives-in-Oklahoma-Ouachita-Mountains.jpg 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>
</div>

<p>There are no less than 22 overlooks will pull-off points and three state parks along the drive, giving you plenty of opportunities to get out, take photographs, or go hiking. Even though the drive can be done in as little as 1.5 hours if you don’t stop, many travelers will take two or even three days to camp, hike, and explore.&nbsp;</p>

<p><a href="https://www.travelok.com/state-parks/talimena-state-park" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Talimena State Park</a> is the primary attraction of the drive, with opportunities for mountain biking, hiking, camping, and horseback riding. The park has tenting campgrounds, an RV site, and picnic areas with running water, grills, fire rings, and a playground.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>When to go: </strong>Fall is considered the best time of year to drive the Talimena National Scenic Byway since the mountains are lit up in bright autumn colors. Spring is when the flowers are in bloom, and summer is good for outdoor activities like hiking and biking. Winter is possible, but driving can sometimes become dangerous because of snow accumulation.&nbsp;</p>
</div></div>

<div class="wp-block-group"><div class="wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained">
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">6. Oklahoma Scenic Drives: Route 8 Parks&nbsp;</h2>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong></strong><strong>Distance: </strong>35 miles&nbsp;</li>

<li><strong>Time Needed: </strong>1 hour or more&nbsp;</li>
</ul>

<p>The entire length of Route 8 crosses Oklahoma from north to south and is about 180 miles long, but the most scenic portion of the drive is between <a href="https://www.travelok.com/watonga" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Watonga</a> and <a href="https://www.travelok.com/hinton" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hinton</a>. This is one of the best scenic drives near Oklahoma City and makes an excellent day trip if you’re already in the city.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/USA-Scenic-Drives-in-Oklahoma-Hinton-1024x683.jpg" alt="USA Scenic Drives in Oklahoma - Hinton" class="wp-image-12270" srcset="https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/USA-Scenic-Drives-in-Oklahoma-Hinton-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/USA-Scenic-Drives-in-Oklahoma-Hinton-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/USA-Scenic-Drives-in-Oklahoma-Hinton-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/USA-Scenic-Drives-in-Oklahoma-Hinton-150x100.jpg 150w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/USA-Scenic-Drives-in-Oklahoma-Hinton.jpg 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>
</div>

<p><a href="https://www.redrockcanyonadventurepark.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Red Rock Canyon Adventure Park</a> and <a href="https://www.travelok.com/state-parks/roman-nose-state-park" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Roman Nose State Park</a> are the two top attractions of the drive, both of which feature spectacular Oklahoma scenery.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Red Rock Canyon is an excellent, family-friendly park with great hiking trails like the Rough Horsetail Nature Trail or the <a href="https://www.familyroadtrip.co/scenic-drives-in-california/">California</a> Road Nature Trail, which both have interpretive signs. There’s also a seasonal outdoor pool, a picnic shelter, a fishing pond, and activities like rock climbing.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Roman Nose State Park is located near Watonga and is known for its gypsum rock canyons and natural springs. In addition to the trails and wilderness areas, the park has a lodge, an onsite pool, and a golf course. </p>

<p>Several cabins are also available for rent, as well as a campground and RV sites. Spots at Roman Nose tend to fill up quickly in the summer, so if you’re hoping to stay at this state park, it’s best to make a reservation in advance.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>When to go: </strong>Spring through fall are the best seasons for this drive.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While the trip can be completed in less than a day, it’s recommended to spend several days on this trip as there are plenty of incredible destinations worth making a stop at to explore. Top highlights include Key Largo, Islamorada, <a href="https://www.floridastateparks.org/BahiaHonda" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bahia Honda State Park</a>, and the underwater <a href="https://www.pennekamppark.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park</a>.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/USA-Southern-USA-Road-Trip-Skyline-Drive-Virginia-1024x683.jpg" alt="USA Southern USA Road Trip - Skyline Drive, Virginia" class="wp-image-3972" srcset="https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/USA-Southern-USA-Road-Trip-Skyline-Drive-Virginia-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/USA-Southern-USA-Road-Trip-Skyline-Drive-Virginia-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/USA-Southern-USA-Road-Trip-Skyline-Drive-Virginia-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/USA-Southern-USA-Road-Trip-Skyline-Drive-Virginia.jpg 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

All along the highway, you’ll find plenty of trailheads to park your car and go for a hike, as well as several campsites for those who want to spend the night inside the park.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>The best time to do the Skyline Drive is September through November, when the park gets wrapped up in gorgeous fall foliage.&nbsp;</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">3. Chipley to Rainbow Springs State Park, Florida&nbsp;</h3>

<p>If you’re up for a few days spent chasing waterfalls, this southern states road trip through Florida is guaranteed to please.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Starting in <a href="https://www.floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/falling-waters-state-park" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chipley Falling Waters State Park</a>, you’ll make your way all the way to <a href="https://www.floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/rainbow-springs-state-park" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rainbow Springs State Park</a>. Along the route, you’ll get to see the highest waterfalls in Florida, gaze at plenty of natural sinkholes, and spend a few hours exploring <a href="https://www.floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/torreya-state-park" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Torreya State Park</a>. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/USA-Southern-USA-Road-Trip-Rainbow-Springs-State-Park-Florida-1024x683.jpg" alt="USA Southern USA Road Trip - Rainbow Springs State Park, Florida" class="wp-image-3971" srcset="https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/USA-Southern-USA-Road-Trip-Rainbow-Springs-State-Park-Florida-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/USA-Southern-USA-Road-Trip-Rainbow-Springs-State-Park-Florida-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/USA-Southern-USA-Road-Trip-Rainbow-Springs-State-Park-Florida-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/USA-Southern-USA-Road-Trip-Rainbow-Springs-State-Park-Florida.jpg 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>
</div>

<p>Moreover, you’ll also get the option to stop at plenty of other parks such as the <a href="https://www.floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/big-shoals-state-park" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Big Shoals State Park</a> and <a href="https://www.floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/devils-millhopper-geological-state-park" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Devil’s Millhopper Geological State Park</a>, where you’ll be able to see a series of waterfalls crashing down into a sinkhole that contains an actual mini rainforest!&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>This road trip can be done any time of the year but keep in mind that the summer months are usually the warmest and wettest. With that said, summers are when the waterfalls look the most impressive due to the rain, so take your pick!&nbsp;</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">4. Pineywoods Autumn Trail, Texas&nbsp;</h3>

<p>Vineyards, fairytale-like forests, and autumn colors are the staples of the Pineywood Autumn Trail in <a href="https://www.familyroadtrip.co/ultimate-texas-travel-bucket-list/">Texas</a>.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While it’s much lesser known than other southern states road trip routes, this 145-mile loop between Palestine and Athens will have you passing plenty of forests and parks worth making a stop at to take a walk and truly take in the golden and crimson tones. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also fly above the fall foliage at Texas ZipLine Adventures!&nbsp;</p>

<p>As if that weren’t enough, Pineywood is also dotted by tons of idyllic lakes and vineyards. This route includes the <a href="https://www.tarawinery.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tara Vineyard &amp; Winery</a> for those keen to get a taste of <a href="https://www.familyroadtrip.co/unique-places-to-visit-in-texas/">Texas’s hidden wine country</a>, but if you still haven’t gotten your fill of grapes, you can continue the road trip onwards over the Piney Woods Wine Trail, which is dotted by over 20 wineries.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Autumn is definitely the best time to do this road trip, especially considering it’s a mecca for fall hues. If you’re unable to do it at this time of the year, spring is another great choice for mild weather and colorful blooms.&nbsp;</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">5. Tuscaloosa to Eutaw, Alabama&nbsp;</h3>

<p>If you love all things vintage, artsy vibes, places that feel as local as they get, and historical architecture, this <a href="https://www.familyroadtrip.co/best-scenic-drives-in-alabama/">Alabama scenic road trip </a>is everything you’ve been looking for.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As you make your way from Tuscaloosa to Eutaw in West Alameda, you’ll pass plenty of antique shops, art galleries galore, and a plethora of antebellum mansions, not to mention you’ll also get the chance to make a few detours.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/USA-Southern-USA-Road-Trip-Tuscaloosa-Alabama-1024x683.jpg" alt="USA Southern USA Road Trip - Tuscaloosa, Alabama" class="wp-image-3970" srcset="https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/USA-Southern-USA-Road-Trip-Tuscaloosa-Alabama-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/USA-Southern-USA-Road-Trip-Tuscaloosa-Alabama-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/USA-Southern-USA-Road-Trip-Tuscaloosa-Alabama-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/USA-Southern-USA-Road-Trip-Tuscaloosa-Alabama.jpg 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>
</div>

<p>A few highlights of this road trip include the <a href="https://www.ruralswalabama.org/attraction/the-old-greene-county-courthouse/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Courthouse Square in Eutaw</a>, the lakes that surround the town of Livingston, and getting to drive over the <a href="https://www.ruralswalabama.org/attraction/alamuchee-bellamy-covered-bridge-1861/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Alamuchee-Bellamy Covered Bridge</a>, a wooden bridge that is said to be haunted by an outlaw who was hanged there!&nbsp;</p>

<p>Spring and fall are the best time of the year to do this road trip as the weather is mild and comfortable. Summers are also pleasant for warm-weather lovers, although this is the high season in <a href="https://www.familyroadtrip.co/tag/alabama/">Alabama</a> and cities like Tuscaloosa can get pretty crowded.&nbsp;</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">6. Haunted Oklahoma, Oklahoma&nbsp;</h3>

<p>Love all things haunted? If you consider yourself a bit of a daredevil, this deep south road trip is definitely one to remember!&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>This sensational road trip travels through some of Oklahoma’s most haunted cities, including Tulsa, Ponca City, Alva, and El Reno before looping its way back to <a href="https://www.familyroadtrip.co/road-trip-oklahoma/">Oklahoma City</a>.&nbsp;</p>

<p>All of these spots are great to spend the night in, but the main reason to visit them is to check out a few of its most haunted buildings. Highlights in Tulsa include the <a href="https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/gandinis-circus" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Gandini’s Circus</a> in Edmond, an abandoned carnival, the <a href="https://hexhouse.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hex House</a>, and Cain’s Ballroom. </p>

<p>In Ponca City, visit the Constantine Theater &amp; Poncan Theater, which are said to be incredibly haunted and don’t forget to check out the <a href="https://www.csmalva.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cherokee Strip Museum</a> in Alva, which is believed to be extremely ghost-ridden.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The best time to do this <a href="https://www.familyroadtrip.co/scenic-drives-in-oklahoma/">Oklahoma road trip</a> is from late March to early June and September to November when the weather is temperate. Bonus points if you do it in late October for Halloween! </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">7. Outer Banks Scenic Byway, North Carolina&nbsp;</h3>

<p>Starting in Nags Head, this scenic byway runs all the way to Ocracoke Island and back to the mainland (yes, a ferry journey is included here!).&nbsp;</p>

<p>As one of the most iconic routes in North Carolina, this road trip in the southern US is a great addition to your bucket list, taking you through one of the<a href="https://www.familyroadtrip.co/best-family-vacation-east-coast/"> most popular vacation destinations on the US east coast</a>.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">

Ocracoke Island is another must-do stop for beautiful beaches, and if you’re feeling up for a day trip, you can hire a boat to the alluring Portsmouth Island.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>The best time of the year to do this road trip is between April to mid-June and early September to late October.&nbsp;</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">8. Haunted Louisiana, Louisiana&nbsp;</h3>

<p>Another of the best southern USA road trips for those who love all things spooky, this incredible route will have you checking out some of the most beautiful (and haunted) sites in a state that is already infamous for its paranormal activity.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The route begins in Keachi and ends in <a href="https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/fort-proctor" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Fort Proctor</a>, following mostly the I-49. Along the way, you&#8217;ll get to make stops at deserted schools, sugar plantations, and plenty of mills. There’s even an abandoned Six Flax on the way &#8211; it’s illegal to enter the premises, but even the sight from the road is enough to send chills down your spine!&nbsp;</p>

<p>Must-do stops include <a href="https://www.lacajunbayou.com/things-to-see-and-do/tours-and-attractions/laurel-valley-village-and-sugar-plantation" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Laurel Valley Sugar Plantation</a>, Fort Proctor, Elise Reuss Memorial School, Charles Boldt Paper Mill, <a href="https://www.onlyinyourstate.com/louisiana/kisatchie-high-school-la/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kisatchie High School</a>, and Keachi Women’s College.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p><a href="https://www.familyroadtrip.co/attractions-things-to-do-with-kids-in-louisiana/">Louisiana</a> is best visited between mid-February to early May and from October to December for mild weather. This road trip is a great idea for a Halloween adventure, or you can combine it with a Mardi Gras trip in February instead!&nbsp;</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">9. Tennessee Waterfalls Road Trip, Tennessee&nbsp;</h3>

<p>If you love nature and all things waterfalls, the Tennessee Waterfalls route is one of the best southern road trips to take for outdoor adventures.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This gorgeous drive will show you some of the best the Great Smoky Mountains have to offer. The drive starts at Cumming Falls on the Blackburn Fork State Scenic River, where you can freshen up and swim before continuing to <a href="https://tnstateparks.com/parks/burgess-falls" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Burgess Falls</a> to check out four different waterfalls.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/USA-Southern-USA-Road-Trip-Fall-Creek-Falls-Tennessee-1024x683.jpg" alt="USA Southern USA Road Trip - Fall Creek Falls, Tennessee" class="wp-image-3968" srcset="https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/USA-Southern-USA-Road-Trip-Fall-Creek-Falls-Tennessee-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/USA-Southern-USA-Road-Trip-Fall-Creek-Falls-Tennessee-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/USA-Southern-USA-Road-Trip-Fall-Creek-Falls-Tennessee-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/USA-Southern-USA-Road-Trip-Fall-Creek-Falls-Tennessee.jpg 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>
</div>

<p>Next, you can make a stop at <a href="https://tnstateparks.com/parks/fall-creek-falls" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Falls Creek Falls</a> and finish up the trip at Twin Falls to end the trip with a bang!&nbsp;</p>

<p>This road trip is a summer favorite, but fall is also a great time to do it for fall foliage &#8211; you can catch all our favorite <a href="https://www.familyroadtrip.co/scenic-drives-in-the-smoky-mountains/">Smoky Mountain scenic drives</a> here.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">10. Hilton Head to Charleston, South Carolina&nbsp;</h3>

<p>The drive is technically only 90 miles long, but there are plenty of wonderful spots to overnight in if you have the time. As you make your way to Charleston, you’ll get the chance to enjoy plenty of coastal scenery and small-town charm. </p>

<p>Stops worth making include <a href="https://southcarolinaparks.com/hunting-island" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hunting Island State Park</a> for secluded beaches, <a href="https://www.fws.gov/refuge/pinckney-island" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge</a> for wildlife spotting, and Beaufort for antebellum mansions.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Summer is the best time to do this road trip for perfect beach weather.&nbsp;</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">11. Midland Trail, West Virginia&nbsp;</h3>

<p>Gorgeous nature, charming historical towns, local art, pioneer history, pretty waterfalls, and plenty of mystery are just a few of the aspects that make this deep south USA road trip a true gem.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Covering over 100 miles between Charleston and Sam Black Church in <a href="https://www.familyroadtrip.co/scenic-drives-in-west-virginia/">West Virginia</a>, this scenic byway crosses some of the most rugged areas of the Mountain State. The road is believed to have been originally carved out into the mountains by buffalo and native tribes of the area.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Oklahoma may not be a top tourist destination in the USA, but if you know where to look, the Sooner State actually has a ton of attractions that make it a wonderful place worthy of being on every traveler’s bucket list on a US road trip.</p>

<p>Oklahoma is a fantastic place to head to for history and culture. It also boasts many diverse landscapes, modern cities, charming towns, and a myriad of natural parks, making it a great spot to mix a little bit of everything. </p>

<p>Add to that the fact that few places in the United States are as rich in Western and Indian heritage, and you’ve got yourself the perfect recipe for a <a href="https://www.familyroadtrip.co/best-american-road-trips/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fabulous US road trip</a>!</p>

<p>In this post, you’ll find a list of just a few of the best places and things to do in Oklahoma to place on your Sooner State road trip bucket list (beyond just Route 66!).</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">8 Bucket List-Worthy Stops in Oklahoma</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><a href="https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1sH0eYkPk6kL5HIjOto1XAdjfe_QtZ-0&amp;usp=sharing" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/USA-Oklahoma-Road-Trip-Map-1024x683.jpg" alt="Oklahoma road trip map on a phone with collage of Oklahoma place images" class="wp-image-2398" srcset="https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/USA-Oklahoma-Road-Trip-Map-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/USA-Oklahoma-Road-Trip-Map-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/USA-Oklahoma-Road-Trip-Map-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/USA-Oklahoma-Road-Trip-Map.jpg 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><a href="https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1sH0eYkPk6kL5HIjOto1XAdjfe_QtZ-0&amp;usp=sharing" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Click here for an interactive map on Google maps &#8211; create your own Oklahoma road trip itinerary</a></figcaption></figure>
</div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">1.&nbsp;Oklahoma City</h3>

<p>Oklahoma City is often nicknamed the Big Friendly because of its welcoming residents and Southern hospitality.</p>

<p>Here, you’ll be able to get your fill of museums, art galleries, botanical gardens, and cosmopolitan edge, all without leaving behind its fantastic Western charm!</p>

<p>While there’s a ton to do all over the city, one of the places you can’t miss out on visiting is the <a href="https://nationalcowboymuseum.org/plan-your-visit/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National Cowboy &amp; Western Heritage Museum</a>, where you’ll find displays and collections of Western art and artifacts that promote the conservation of American West traditions and culture. For more Western goodness, head to the <a href="https://americanbanjomuseum.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Banjo Museum</a> next, whose name is self-explanatory!</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/USA-Oklahoma-Road-Trip-Oklahoma-City-1024x683.jpg" alt="USA Oklahoma Road Trip - Oklahoma City" class="wp-image-2395" srcset="https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/USA-Oklahoma-Road-Trip-Oklahoma-City-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/USA-Oklahoma-Road-Trip-Oklahoma-City-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/USA-Oklahoma-Road-Trip-Oklahoma-City-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/USA-Oklahoma-Road-Trip-Oklahoma-City.jpg 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Bricktown Canal in OKC at twilight</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p>Another can’t-miss landmark is the<a href="https://memorialmuseum.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> Oklahoma City National Memorial &amp; Museum</a>, where visitors can honor the victims of the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in 1995. The museum was created on the exact spot where the bombarded building used to stand and details the tragic events that pay tribute to the 168 people who perished on that dreadful day.</p>

<p>For history and architectural buffs, make sure not to miss out on visiting the <a href="https://oklahoma.gov/governor/about/oklahoma-state-capitol.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Oklahoma City State Capitol</a>, where you’ll find lavish Greco-Roman-style architecture complete with marble stairs, hand-painted ceilings, and a grand dome!</p>

<p>Last but not least is the Guthrie Historic District, which is 32 miles away from OKC but totally worth the detour. This National Historic Landmark is home to over 2,000 buildings from the 1800s and early 1900s that are perfectly preserved and restored. </p>

<p>Here, you’ll find charming coffee shops, great restaurants, and lots of locally-owned stores to explore. Don’t be surprised if you feel as though you traveled back in time while strolling Guthrie’s brick sidewalks!</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">2. Chickasaw National Recreation Area</h3>

<p>Made up of two adjoining parks (Platt National Park and Arbuckle Recreation Area), Chickasaw National Recreation Area is a go-to for Oklahoma residents to enjoy nature.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/USA-Oklahoma-Road-Trip-Chikasaw-National-Recreation-Area-1024x683.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-2394" srcset="https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/USA-Oklahoma-Road-Trip-Chikasaw-National-Recreation-Area-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/USA-Oklahoma-Road-Trip-Chikasaw-National-Recreation-Area-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/USA-Oklahoma-Road-Trip-Chikasaw-National-Recreation-Area-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.familyroadtrip.co/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/USA-Oklahoma-Road-Trip-Chikasaw-National-Recreation-Area.jpg 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>
</div>

<p>The park homes beautiful lakes, natural freshwater springs, and lots of wildlife and interesting flora. The park’s name actually translates into “The Peaceful Valley of Rippling Waters&#8221;, and once you get there, you’ll see exactly why it got that name!</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">3. Tahlequah</h3>

<p>If you want to experience authentic Native American heritage, there’s no better place to head to than Tahlequah. This city is located in the heart of the Cherokee Nation and provides a superb chance for visitors to learn about their culture and honor their painful history.</p>

<p>One of the things you can’t miss out on doing while visiting Tahlequah is checking out the National Cherokee Capitol. This building was constructed in 1867 after the original wooden one was burned in a fire during the Civil War. </p>

<p>Today, the building is still in use and currently homes the Cherokee County courthouse and the <a href="https://visitcherokeenation.com/attractions/cherokee-national-history-museum" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cherokee National History Museum</a>. Here, you’ll find exhibits and artifacts that tell the stories of Cherokee life and culture before colonization.</p>

<p>Moreover, Tahlequah is part of the <a href="https://www.history.com/topics/native-american-history/trail-of-tears" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Trail of Tears</a>, a route the Five Tribes (Cherokees, Creeks, Choctaws, Chickasaw, and Seminoles) were pushed to follow when they were forced out of their lands in Alabama, Tennessee, and Georgia back in the 1830s. They followed the trail on foot, wagons, and horses, with the journey ending in Indian Territory (what we know as Oklahoma today).</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">4.&nbsp;Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge</h3>
