Before we jump into the details, though, you’ll need a car! Unless you’ve driven, say, Brisbane to Cairns, you’ve likely flown in or taken the train to Cairns to begin your far North Queensland adventure.

Hiring a car in Cairns will allow you the flexibility to embark on self-drive day trips from Cairns at your own pace and not rely on public transport, taxis, or expensive day tours.

When renting a car, you will need a valid driver’s license from your home country or an International Driving Permit (IDP), if required. It’s essential to review the rental agreement’s terms and conditions, including insurance coverage, fuel policy, mileage limits, and any additional fees.

Remember that driving in Cairns and Australia follows the left-hand side of the road, and speed limits and other road rules must be followed. Cairns has well-maintained roads, which are ideally suited for regular vehicles. However, if you plan on going off-roading, you might want to pick up an SUV or 4×4.

1. Port Douglas & The Daintree

(One hour drive via Captain Cook Highway/State Route 44)

• Time Needed: 3 – 6 hours

Port Douglas is a charming seaside town that is the gateway to the iconic Daintree Rainforest.

One of the best short drives from Cairns, the drive up there showcases the natural beauty of Far North Queensland, taking you along the breathtaking Captain Cook Highway that hugs the picturesque coastline.

Leaving Cairns, you’ll be treated to stunning ocean views and glimpses of palm-fringed beaches as you wind your way north. The road is well-maintained, making for a comfortable drive, and there are plenty of lookout points along the way to stop and capture memorable photos.

When you reach Port Douglas, you’ll find a laid-back atmosphere with palm-lined streets, boutique shops, and a vibrant dining scene. Its stunning Four Mile Beach, fringed by swaying coconut trees, invites visitors to relax, soak up the sun or go for a leisurely stroll. A stinger net there offers safe swimming.

From Port Douglas, you can visit the nearby Daintree Rainforest, the oldest tropical rainforest in the world. To get there, Cross the Daintree River on a scenic ferry and enter a world where ancient trees tower above and exotic wildlife thrives.

If you don’t want to make the river crossing (adverse weather and low tides can frequently affect crossing), you can still enjoy an introduction to the Daintree at Mossman Gorge. There are plenty of self-guided trails to enjoy or join a Dreamtime Walk conducted by the local Ngadiku (Nar-di-gul) Indigenous people (pre-booking essential).

Pro Tip: Be mindful of visiting Daintree during the wet season of November to April, as heavy rain makes the area susceptible to flash flooding. Always check the road conditions there before you go; the ferry cannot be pre-booked and may have long queues, particularly following any closures.

2. Kuranda

(35-minute drive from Cairns via National Route 1)

• Distance: 30 km
• Time Needed: 3 – 6 hours

One of the best road trips from Cairns is the drive up to Kuranda, the quintessential Aussie small town in the mountains.

The route there offers breathtaking views as you ascend into the rainforest-clad mountains. You’ll travel along the Kuranda Range Road, a winding and picturesque route that provides glimpses of cascading waterfalls, dense vegetation, and panoramic vistas of the surrounding region.

Kuranda is renowned for its arts and crafts markets, offering unique souvenirs and local products – the perfect place to stock up on authentic Aussie souvenirs. You can explore the village’s vibrant shops, arts and crafts galleries, and cafes while there.

• Distance: 93 km
• Time Needed: All Day

One of the best places to visit on a day trip from Cairns is the Atherton Tablelands.

Located just inland from Cairns, this picturesque region offers a refreshing escape into lush rainforests, rolling hills, and pristine waterfalls. On the way there, the road winds through scenic countryside, offering breathtaking views of rolling hills, fertile farmland, and dramatic waterfalls.

The Atherton Tablelands is known for its stunning crater lakes, including Lake Barrine and Lake Eacham. These ancient volcanic lakes provide opportunities for swimming, kayaking, or simply enjoying a picnic by the tranquil waters.

It will take you three hours to drive there, and you’ll need a 4×4 because the road is mainly unsealed. But once you reach it, you will be treated to a scenic drive that winds through the Kirrama Range, offering breathtaking views, diverse ecosystems, and the chance to connect with nature.

The drive is renowned for its rugged beauty, with sections of rainforest, towering mountains, and cascading waterfalls dotting the landscape. Watch for wildlife such as wallabies, cassowaries, and several bird species.

Pro Tip: If you plan to camp here, make a reservation in advance of your visit. It can be a popular destination for campers, especially in summer. So you will want to avoid inconvenience and disappointment.

10. Herberton

(90 minutes via State Route 52)

• Time Needed: 3 – 6 hours

Also in the Atherton Tablelands, Herberton is a quaint historic town that is known for its well-preserved streetscape, incorporating over 50 heritage-listed buildings.

You’ll be captivated by them as you stroll along the town’s beautiful, tree-lined main street. Be sure to visit the Herberton Historic Village, a living museum that provides a fascinating insight into the area’s pioneering history, with restored buildings, vintage machinery, and several interactive exhibits.

A visit to Herberton wouldn’t be complete without experiencing the famous Herberton Roadhouse. If you are hungry, you can indulge in homemade pies, treats, and hearty country meals that satisfy any appetite.

What is the Distance Between Melbourne and the Gold Coast?

Located at the end of a scenic drive along the D’Anguilar Highway, this destination lets you visit Mount Nebo, Mount Glorious, Mount Mee, and surrounding areas en route to the forest.

To get there, you must take the Tourist Route 8 up the D’Aguilar Ranges until you reach Mount Nebo and Mount Glorious. Once you arrive, you will have the perfect opportunity to stretch your legs and immerse yourself in the natural flora and fauna of the area. You can also explore historical sites, geological phenomena, and numerous walking trails that showcase stunning views. 

After going through the D’Anguilar State Forest, head down its western side toward Wivenhoe Dam and Fernvale. Spanning some 150 km from the city, the official tourist route of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland offers incredible views of lush, undulating hills, rainforest-rimmed roads and breathtaking lookout points.

Along the way, you’ll pass through charming towns like Maleny, Montville, and Mapleton, full of craft shops, cheese stores, clothing boutiques, art galleries, and several cafes.

When at the park, be sure to tackle The Natural Bridge Circuit. This fantastic 1 km walking trail takes you through the subtropical rainforest in the Numinbah Valley, ending at the breathtaking Natural Bridge.

You could easily spend a week sailing around the islands, of which there are 74, including Hamilton Island, Daydream Island, Hayman Island and Hook Island. Not to mention visiting Whitehaven Beach, which TripAdvisor voted as the Number 1 beach in the world in 2021.

All these islands feature stunning beaches and crystal-clear waters and offer plenty of opportunities for snorkelling, scuba diving, or a glass-bottom boat tour to see the colorful marine life.

Before heading to them, take a dip in the Airlie Beach Lagoon, a free outdoor swimming pool that overlooks the ocean. You should also go on a crocodile safari, hike in the beautiful Conway National Park, or take a scenic flight over the Great Barrier Reef to see the iconic Heart Reef.

Townsville (1-2 nights)

Townsville is the last major city before Cairns, so stopping here before completing the four-hour journey is worth stopping here.

Whilst here, a great place to head to is The Strand, a picturesque waterfront promenade that stretches along the coast. Families can enjoy a leisurely walk or bike ride along the palm-lined pathway, taking in the stunning views of Magnetic Island. The Strand also offers a water park with slides, water features, and a large swimming enclosure, perfect for kids to cool off and have fun.

The city is also home to the Museum of Tropical Queensland, which showcases the region’s unique natural and cultural history. While there, kids should enjoy walking through a replica of the HMS Pandora, an 18th-century British shipwreck.

Townsville’s Reef HQ Aquarium is another must-visit destination, providing a fascinating underwater adventure for children. The aquarium features the world’s largest living coral reef exhibit, allowing kids to marvel at the vibrant marine life, including tropical fish, turtles, and even sharks. Interactive displays and informative presentations offer a deeper understanding of the Great Barrier Reef ecosystem.

Townsville also boasts family-friendly beaches, such as Pallarenda Beach and Rowes Bay, while the nearby Magnetic Island is just a short ferry ride away. Home to other beautiful beaches, walking trails, and wildlife encounters, your kids will love spotting koalas in their natural habitat and snorkelling in the clear waters to discover colourful coral and marine creatures there.

Mission Beach (1 night)

Nestled between lush rainforest and the sparkling waters of the Coral Sea, Mission Beach offers a perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and exploration.

Whilst at Mission Beach, families can embark on Great Barrier Reef tours to go snorkelling or diving in its vibrant underwater world. Kids will be amazed by the colourful coral formations and the chance to spot tropical fish, turtles, and dolphins.

If you would prefer to stay on the beach, it features a vast stretch of golden sandy beaches to sunbathe, play sports, or walk on. Safety nets are also installed during the stinger season to give people a safe swimming space.

Over at the Mission Beach Visitor Information Centre, kids will love the opportunity to visit the Butterfly House. Kids can witness butterflies’ fascinating life cycle in a tropical rainforest sanctuary and learn about the conservation’s importance. 

Adventure-seeking families can head into the nearby rainforests of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. The lush tropical vegetation, cascading waterfalls, and walking trails offer an excellent opportunity to immerse in nature and spot native wildlife. The Mamu Tropical Skywalk is a popular attraction, providing elevated walkways through the rainforest canopy, offering panoramic views and educational exhibits.

Sydney to Cairns Inland Detour

To drive the inland route to Cairns from Sydney, you will have to veer off the M1 at Newcastle and rejoin the A1 at Townsville. Should you do this, consider popping into these places to make overnight stops:
