Everyone knows the classic Route 66. Idolized in music, movies, and shows, it’s the grand master when it comes to American road trips, lovingly nicknamed the “Mother Road”. Lucky for us, it begins right here in Illinois. 

It all started back in 1926 when the Bureau of Public Roads created a way for goods to travel from Chicago to Los Angeles, California. In the last century, this corridor has seen a lot of change including the building up of communities and the development of larger roadways. 

Today, there’s still so much to see and do along Route 66. Towns, big and small, take pride in their position on the Mother Road. 

Make sure to record your trip at the “Route 66 End” sign in Chicago. You’ll find it at the corner of E. Jackson Blvd. and S. Michigan Ave, steps from the Art Institute of Chicago and Millenium Park. Starting in this great city, Route 66 is an easy day trip from Chicago.

Along the trip, make sure to check out the Route 66 Hall of Fame and Museum in Pontiac, Paul Bunyon’s statue in Atlanta, and Lincoln Home National Historic Site in the state capital of Springfield.

Illinois River Road is an absolutely lovely drive that goes from Ottawa in the north down to Havana in the south. Forming a gigantic loop, half of the road hugs the east side of the river bank and the other the west. That way you can drive nearly 300 miles with a different perspective at every mile. 

With Ottawa just over an hour from downtown, the Illinois River Road is a perfect day trip from Chicago. 

Everyone in the family will love exploring the Starved Rock State Park. There are plenty of hiking trails for every level and the 14 waterfalls in the park are a great reward. In Peoria, you’ll have fun at the Wildlife Prairie State Park and the Peoria Zoo. 

Don’t miss the history present in Princeton. Visit the Lovejoy Homestead to learn about its significance in the Underground Railroad.   

6. Scenic Drives in Illinois: Meeting of the Great Rivers (State Route 3, 143, and 103)

• Distance: 33 miles  
• Time needed: 1 hour to 2 days

With a name like Meeting of the Great Rivers, it’s kind of explanatory. Yes, this drive will take you to the place where the great Illinois River and Missouri River meet the great Mississippi River. What you won’t get from just the name is that this is one of the best Illinois scenic byways. 

Although shorter than other scenic Illinois roads on the list, Meeting of the Great Rivers is one not to pass up. You’ll love traveling north from Hartford through quaint towns like Elsah, Wood River, Alton, and Grafton. Each has a scene not to miss.

Definitely make a visit to the Lewis & Clark National Trail Site in Hartford. The preservation of the village of Elsah feels like you’ve stepped back in time.  

7.  Scenic Drives in Illinois: Ohio River Scenic Byway (US Highway 62 and 146)

• Distance: 188 miles  
• Time needed: 2 hours to 3 days

You may guess that the Ohio River Scenic Byway should be in the state of Ohio. But in fact, this beautiful drive is one of the wonderful Illinois scenic roads. You’ll be treated to the beautiful landscape that defines the southern border of the state along this magnificent river. 

One of the best aspects of the Ohio River Scenic Byway is that it takes you through the Shawnee National Forest, one of the best places to go in southern Illinois. The whole family will love hiking the oak-hickory forest with its incredible geological formations. In the forest don’t miss the Garden of the Gods or the Pomona Natural Bridge. 

Other must-do’s on this beautiful scenic drive in Illinois are visiting the Cave-in-Rock State Park and the historic town of Golconda.

8. Scenic Drives in Illinois: Spoon River Valley Scenic Drive

In the heart of Illinois is Fulton County and the Spoon River Valley. Although this wonderful farming community is not technically a byway, it’s still a great place to explore.

The Spoon River Valley Scenic Drive Fall Festival was created in the 1960s to generate enthusiasm for visitors to enjoy the area. Since then, folks have enjoyed the drive and activities during 2 weekends in October. 

Today, you’ll find pumpkin picking, homemade pies, jams, and crafts for sale. If you can’t make it in October, don’t worry! You’re welcome to visit the Spoon River Valley any time. It’s really one of the most delightful drives in Illinois.

As if that weren’t reason enough to convince you to pay this place a visit, it’s also the home to several endangered species such as the Texas ocelot and the Gulf Coast jaguarundi, making it a haven for those keen to get close to the animals that roam the Lone State State.

2. Cathedral of Junk

It’s not exactly a secret that Austin prides itself on its quirky vibes, and the Cathedral of Junk is a prime example of how weird and wonderful the city can get.

Set in the backyard of a local named Vince, this cathedral is exactly what its name sounds like – a “cathedral” created from random junk. Vince began “building” it (or his “clubhouse”, as he often calls it) back in the late 80s.

Over the years, it has continued to evolve, both by Vince’s efforts as well as locals who fell in love with the project and wanted to donate their very own junk to the cause.

3. Waco Mammoth National Monument

Keen to take a trip back in time to the Prehistoric era? Waco Mammoth National Monument is the home to the largest concentration of mammoth fossils to have died after a big natural disaster, and there are so many of them around that you won’t even know where to start looking!

Most of the mammoth fossils you’ll find here are said to be the result of a mudslide that took place almost 70,000 years ago (although that’s just a theory). As you explore the site, you’ll get plenty of opportunities to get close and personal to these gigantic extinct animals.

Moreover, you’ll also be able to see several other fossils, including those of a saber-tooth cat and bulls.

4. Cadillac Ranch

Founded back in the 70s, Cadillac Ranch is a huge art installation on Route 66 that features a collection of graffiti-covered Cadillacs that are partially buried in the ground.

The installation’s aim was originally to represent the American Dream, but today, most visitors come to see the incredibly photogenic scenery it provides!

It goes without saying that the scenery along its 113 miles is as spectacular as it gets. Each and every mile, you’ll be treated to beautiful ocean views and white sand beaches as you make your way to Key West. 

While the trip can be completed in less than a day, it’s recommended to spend several days on this trip as there are plenty of incredible destinations worth making a stop at to explore. Top highlights include Key Largo, Islamorada, Bahia Honda State Park, and the underwater John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. 

The best time of the year to do this southern states road trip is between March and May when hurricane season is over and the winter crowds have tapered off. 

2. Skyline Drive, Virginia 

Starting in Richmond, the Skyline Drive will have you seeing some of the best the state of Virginia has to offer as you make your way to the heart of the Appalachian Mountains.  

Even though this road is only 105 miles long, it can very well be turned into a multi-day southern road trip as there are plenty of stops worth making along the way for hiking aficionados. 

The drive will take you along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains inside Shenandoah National Park. All along the highway, you’ll find plenty of trailheads to park your car and go for a hike, as well as several campsites for those who want to spend the night inside the park.  

The best time to do the Skyline Drive is September through November, when the park gets wrapped up in gorgeous fall foliage. 

3. Chipley to Rainbow Springs State Park, Florida 

If you’re up for a few days spent chasing waterfalls, this southern states road trip through Florida is guaranteed to please. 

Starting in Chipley Falling Waters State Park, you’ll make your way all the way to Rainbow Springs State Park. Along the route, you’ll get to see the highest waterfalls in Florida, gaze at plenty of natural sinkholes, and spend a few hours exploring Torreya State Park.

Moreover, you’ll also get the option to stop at plenty of other parks such as the Big Shoals State Park and Devil’s Millhopper Geological State Park, where you’ll be able to see a series of waterfalls crashing down into a sinkhole that contains an actual mini rainforest!  

This road trip can be done any time of the year but keep in mind that the summer months are usually the warmest and wettest. With that said, summers are when the waterfalls look the most impressive due to the rain, so take your pick! 

4. Pineywoods Autumn Trail, Texas 

Vineyards, fairytale-like forests, and autumn colors are the staples of the Pineywood Autumn Trail in Texas. 

While it’s much lesser known than other southern states road trip routes, this 145-mile loop between Palestine and Athens will have you passing plenty of forests and parks worth making a stop at to take a walk and truly take in the golden and crimson tones. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also fly above the fall foliage at Texas ZipLine Adventures! 

As if that weren’t enough, Pineywood is also dotted by tons of idyllic lakes and vineyards. This route includes the Tara Vineyard & Winery for those keen to get a taste of Texas’s hidden wine country, but if you still haven’t gotten your fill of grapes, you can continue the road trip onwards over the Piney Woods Wine Trail, which is dotted by over 20 wineries.  

Autumn is definitely the best time to do this road trip, especially considering it’s a mecca for fall hues. If you’re unable to do it at this time of the year, spring is another great choice for mild weather and colorful blooms. 

5. Tuscaloosa to Eutaw, Alabama 

If you love all things vintage, artsy vibes, places that feel as local as they get, and historical architecture, this Alabama scenic road trip is everything you’ve been looking for. 

As you make your way from Tuscaloosa to Eutaw in West Alameda, you’ll pass plenty of antique shops, art galleries galore, and a plethora of antebellum mansions, not to mention you’ll also get the chance to make a few detours. 

A few highlights of this road trip include the Courthouse Square in Eutaw, the lakes that surround the town of Livingston, and getting to drive over the Alamuchee-Bellamy Covered Bridge, a wooden bridge that is said to be haunted by an outlaw who was hanged there! 

Spring and fall are the best time of the year to do this road trip as the weather is mild and comfortable. Summers are also pleasant for warm-weather lovers, although this is the high season in Alabama and cities like Tuscaloosa can get pretty crowded. 

6. Haunted Oklahoma, Oklahoma 

Love all things haunted? If you consider yourself a bit of a daredevil, this deep south road trip is definitely one to remember!  

This sensational road trip travels through some of Oklahoma’s most haunted cities, including Tulsa, Ponca City, Alva, and El Reno before looping its way back to Oklahoma City. 

All of these spots are great to spend the night in, but the main reason to visit them is to check out a few of its most haunted buildings. Highlights in Tulsa include the Gandini’s Circus in Edmond, an abandoned carnival, the Hex House, and Cain’s Ballroom.

In Ponca City, visit the Constantine Theater & Poncan Theater, which are said to be incredibly haunted and don’t forget to check out the Cherokee Strip Museum in Alva, which is believed to be extremely ghost-ridden. 

The best time to do this Oklahoma road trip is from late March to early June and September to November when the weather is temperate. Bonus points if you do it in late October for Halloween! 

7. Outer Banks Scenic Byway, North Carolina 

Starting in Nags Head, this scenic byway runs all the way to Ocracoke Island and back to the mainland (yes, a ferry journey is included here!). 

As one of the most iconic routes in North Carolina, this road trip in the southern US is a great addition to your bucket list, taking you through one of the most popular vacation destinations on the US east coast. 

Along the way, you’ll get to visit Bodie Island, Cape Hatteras, and if you like hiking, you can also spend a few hours exploring the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. Ocracoke Island is another must-do stop for beautiful beaches, and if you’re feeling up for a day trip, you can hire a boat to the alluring Portsmouth Island.  

The best time of the year to do this road trip is between April to mid-June and early September to late October. 

8. Haunted Louisiana, Louisiana 

Another of the best southern USA road trips for those who love all things spooky, this incredible route will have you checking out some of the most beautiful (and haunted) sites in a state that is already infamous for its paranormal activity. 

The route begins in Keachi and ends in Fort Proctor, following mostly the I-49. Along the way, you’ll get to make stops at deserted schools, sugar plantations, and plenty of mills. There’s even an abandoned Six Flax on the way – it’s illegal to enter the premises, but even the sight from the road is enough to send chills down your spine! 

Must-do stops include Laurel Valley Sugar Plantation, Fort Proctor, Elise Reuss Memorial School, Charles Boldt Paper Mill, Kisatchie High School, and Keachi Women’s College.  

Louisiana is best visited between mid-February to early May and from October to December for mild weather. This road trip is a great idea for a Halloween adventure, or you can combine it with a Mardi Gras trip in February instead! 

9. Tennessee Waterfalls Road Trip, Tennessee 

If you love nature and all things waterfalls, the Tennessee Waterfalls route is one of the best southern road trips to take for outdoor adventures. 

This gorgeous drive will show you some of the best the Great Smoky Mountains have to offer. The drive starts at Cumming Falls on the Blackburn Fork State Scenic River, where you can freshen up and swim before continuing to Burgess Falls to check out four different waterfalls. 

Next, you can make a stop at Falls Creek Falls and finish up the trip at Twin Falls to end the trip with a bang!

10. Hilton Head to Charleston, South Carolina 

Starting on Hilton Head, an island just off the coast of South Carolina, this epic road trip will have you seeing the absolute best the Palmetto State has to offer. 

The drive is technically only 90 miles long, but there are plenty of wonderful spots to overnight in if you have the time. As you make your way to Charleston, you’ll get the chance to enjoy plenty of coastal scenery and small-town charm.

Stops worth making include Hunting Island State Park for secluded beaches, Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge for wildlife spotting, and Beaufort for antebellum mansions. 

Summer is the best time to do this road trip for perfect beach weather. 

11. Midland Trail, West Virginia 

Gorgeous nature, charming historical towns, local art, pioneer history, pretty waterfalls, and plenty of mystery are just a few of the aspects that make this deep south USA road trip a true gem. 

Covering over 100 miles between Charleston and Sam Black Church in West Virginia, this scenic byway crosses some of the most rugged areas of the Mountain State. The road is believed to have been originally carved out into the mountains by buffalo and native tribes of the area. 

Some of the top highlights to check out for nature include Hawks Nest State Park and New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, while historical sites that are musts include The Ruffner Log Cabin, Salt Village, Old Stone House, and the colonial town of Lewisburg.

12. The Blues Highway, Tennessee and Mississippi

If you go directly from Sedona to Grand Canyon, it takes almost 2 hours if you take I-40 and Highway 64 through the town of Williams. This route will take you to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.

However, if you want to go to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, via US-89N it will take a little more than 4 hours.

Sedona is one of the closest airports to the Grand Canyon, though this scenic airport only takes private charter flights. Coming internationally, you may still want to start your journey in Phoenix, Arizona; the journey from Phoenix to Sedona is also an incredibly scenic 2-hour drive.

Regardless of your route from Sedona to Grand Canyon, you will come across plenty of scenic views and stops on your way. Depending on how many places you stop and whether you stay the night at Williams or Flagstaff, the drive from Sedona to Grand Canyon can take anywhere from several hours to a couple of days.

As we mentioned earlier, there are several amazing places to stop during your road trip, from Sedona to Grand Canyon. Therefore, we have rounded up some of the best stops for a fun and fantastic road trip to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.

1. Grasshopper Point Swimming and Picnic Area

As you drive out of Sedona, you’ll find the Grasshopper Point Swimming and Picnic Area on Route 89A.

It is part of the Coconino National Forest and is a famous spot for tourists and locals to go for a swim, enjoy a relaxing picnic, or simply hang out before heading off toward the Grand Canyon.

Grasshopper Point has a proper arrangement for picnic tables; however, given the crowd, they get filled very quickly. Therefore, if you go early in the morning, you might easily get a good spot.

There are also several trails in the park, the Allen’s Bend, Casner Canyon trail, and the Huckaby trail.

So, relax and unwind amidst the park’s red rock cliffs before your big drive!

2. Oak Creek Canyon

You’ll find the Oak Creek Canyon almost 2.5 miles ahead of Grasshopper Point on Route 89A.

It is a true work of nature with many trees and a rushing creek. There are plenty of camping sites, picnic areas, and hiking trails for the visitors to have a great time.

Apart from the spectacular views, you’ll find small shops selling native American jewelry and other arts & crafts items made by the locals who reside there. Make sure to grab some as souvenirs!

Also, make sure to visit Oak Creek Canyon early in the day if you want to have a peaceful stay because it gets crowded later on.

3. Slide Rock State Park

Once you’re done relaxing in Oak Creek Canyon, make your way to the Slide Rock State Park at a 5-minute drive.

It is listed as one of the best secret swimming holes in Arizona, and what you’ll find in this park is far more fun and enjoyable than anything you have experienced along your drive from Sedona to Grand Canyon!

Apart from the amazing view, Slide Rock Park has an 80-feet long water slide made of slippery sandstone. You can swim in the creek, wade your way through the water, and make memories on the world-famous slide!

However, the sandstone under the water gets a bit slippery; therefore, we advise you to go only if you have the proper gear with you.

Also, the park is packed with people during the summer, so plan your trip during the off-season.

4. Flagstaff

By the time you set off from Slide Rock State Park, you would have picnicked and swum to your heart’s content! From here starts the real long drive towards the Grand Canyon.

However, we’re not done with the places to see on your way! Just 23 miles from the park, you’ll arrive at the city of Flagstaff, also known as the gateway to the Grand Canyon and San Francisco Peaks.

It sits at a height of 7000 feet and is surrounded by the world’s largest ponderosa pine forest. Flagstaff alone has many places to visit; therefore, you can easily spend a couple of days exploring this beautiful city.

You can go to Downtown Flagstaff to grab a bite of the most delicious food, enjoy a coffee or a beer and rest at one of the hotels for the night because the next day is going to be quite adventurous!

5. Places to Visit in Flagstaff

While in Flagstaff, you can spend time visiting the Flagstaff Arboretum, which has almost 750 plant species. It is open from May through October and has guided tours, kids’ activities, and special events.

The next place to visit in Flagstaff is the Arizona Snowbowl, where you can take a peaceful chairlift ride amidst the spectacular views of snow-capped mountains and color-changing Aspens.

If you visit during the winter, you can enjoy skiing and snowboarding, and if you plan a trip in the summer or fall, you can hike or stroll along the trails. No matter what time of the year you visit, there’s a lot to do!

Another great place to see is the Lowell Observatory. This is the place where Pluto was discovered! So, get hold of that telescope and explore the great wonders of space!

And, if you’re a fan of history, the Museum of Northern Arizona should definitely interest you! It has captivating exhibits of artifacts and lifestyles of the Native Americans.

6. Grand Canyon Deer Farm

After spending a few days in Flagstaff, you can continue your Grand Canyon road trip.

The next stop that we suggest is the Grand Canyon Deer Farm, almost 25 miles ahead of Flagstaff on Interstate 40 on Route 66.

This place is an absolute delight if you have kids with you. The park is spread across an expanse of 10 acres and is home to several friendly animals. There are five deer species, including reindeer, sika deer, and Coues deer. Then there are wallabies, llamas, coatimundi, bison, peacocks, cockatoos, goats, camels, and porcupines.

But that’s not all! You can get up close and personal with the animals by feeding them, walking them, and petting them.

The Grand Canyon Deer Farm is the ultimate animal wonderland for all animal lovers out there!

7. Bearizona Wildlife Park

If you’ve not had enough of the animals, don’t worry, as just 7 miles from the Deer Farm, you will reach the Bearizona Wildlife Park.

The park offers the visitors a drive-thru experience, where you can drive along the path and look at the animals in their natural habitat. There’s also a walk-thru facility, which starts right after the drive-thru portion. Here you will find the Bearizona Barnyard, where you can pet-friendly farm animals and walk through pathways viewing the animal enclosures.

The Bearizona Wildlife Park is home to black bears, Alaskan Tundra wolf, American bison, Arctic wolf, bighorn sheep, bobcats, deer, pythons, grizzly bears, jaguars, Fennec fox, red fox, mountain elks, and reindeer, to name a few.

So, the animals you couldn’t find at the Deer Farm, you can find at the Bearizona Wildlife Park! If you’re tired or don’t feel like getting out of the car, you can drive through the park while looking at the animals. On the other hand, if you’re feeling frisky, you can walk through the park.

Regardless, you will have a stellar time with the animals in the park and the barnyard.

8. Canyon Coaster Adventure Park

Just as you exit the Bearizona Wildlife Park and get back on Historic Route 66, you must drive for approximately 3 miles before reaching the Canyon Coaster Adventure Park.

This park is full of thrill and excitement as you experience various fun rides and have the time of your life. First, there’s the 1-mile Canyon Coaster with a 35 feet tall track that takes you through a hair-raising ride with dips, twists, and 360 degrees corkscrews.

Next, there’s Summer Mountain Tubing, where you can slide down the mountain in tubes! There is also Winter Snow Tubing, where you can slide down a snow mountain in tubes! The snow is made using snowmakers so that you can enjoy this experience from November till Easter.

If you’re famished after all the fun activities, you can head to the Bar and Grill and grab a slice of pizza, bite into a juicy burger or sandwich, or munch on a variety of salads. At the Canyon Coaster Bar and Grill, there’s something for everyone!

9. Williams

After an adrenaline-rushing experience at the Canyon Coaster Adventure Park, it’s time to make your way to Williams.

Although it is a small town, there are many things to do there! For instance, the Historic Route 66 Museum is a great place to visit if you’re interested in the history of Route 66. It has several murals from the past, pictures of groups of people that traveled this road, and the path the Native Americans took for trading purposes.

The museum also has a separate building that houses 29 electric cars from the 19th century. In short, you will find many interesting details about the route’s history and other information.

Once you’re done taking a trip down the past, it’s time to go to the Grand Canyon Railway Station. From here, people take a train to Grand Canyon, enjoying the scenic view and other amenities.

So, if you’re up for a train ride, get a ticket and take the 2.5-hour railroad trip all the way to the Grand Canyon.

Or, you could continue your road trip from Sedona to Grand Canyon in your own car.

10. Grand Canyon National Park

Whether staying at Williams for the night or continuing after a quick bite and refueling, it will take hardly 5 minutes to enter Grand Canyon Avenue. From here, it’s almost 60 miles to reach Grand Canyon National Park’s, South Rim.

Grand Canyon National Park’s South Rim is also known as the Desert View Entrance and is at the easternmost side. This is from where you can have your first glance at the Grand Canyon and the Colorado River.

You have now successfully reached your destination: The Grand Canyon.

Here, you will find many hotels and campgrounds where you can stay around Grand Canyon Village. At the same time, you explore the amazing attractions at the park and surrounding areas. It can take anywhere from 1 to 3 days to experience everything at the Grand Canyon, after which you can head back to Sedona, or continue your journey around the southwest.

8. Windward Coast Scenic Drive, Oahu, Hawaii

Also dubbed “The Gathering Place,” Oahu is one of the main islands in Hawaii and the most populated and visited one of them all.

The Windward Coast Scenic Drive along the eastern coast will take you from lively Honolulu to some of the best laid-back coastal towns and secluded beaches in the North Shore area of the island.

If you’re after the most sensational natural beauty in America, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a more enchanting drive than the 80-mile-long Historic Columbia River Scenic Highway (the first road in America specifically built for auto-touring).

Following the I-84 east from Portland on the Oregon side of the Columbia River Gorge, “The King of Roads” is lined with lush temperate rain forests, mossy canyons, intermittent river views, and most famously, the highest concentration of waterfalls in North America (77, to be precise!)

Not just natural beauty, the Columbia River Highway has some of the most beautiful bridges in the country too. Besides the famous Multnomah Falls, some of the highlights of this drive include Vista House and catching the sunset at Crown Point, Bridal Veil Falls, hiking the Eagle Creek Trail, Portland Women’s Forum State Scenic Viewpoint, Columbia River Gorge Discovery Center in The Dalles, and the Dalles Lock and Dam.

South Dakota is a vast state full of natural wonders and heritage. The population is small, and the terrain wide, making it a dreamy destination for an outdoor-focused American road trip.

Begin at Sioux Falls, the largest city in the state and a great base point for visiting Falls Park to check out the waterfalls that dwell within. Upon your return to the city, you can stroll along the Big Sioux Riverwalk all the way to the downtown area, where you can sit at a few restaurants that overlook the river, check out a few local shops, or count how many wall murals you can find!

The next day will be all about exploring Badlands National Park and the varied terrain it covers. Here, you’ll get to see colorful buttes and pinnacles and suddenly blend into the largest mixed-grass prairie in the United States. Prairie Dog Town is a cute spot on the western end of the park, home to prairie dogs eager to be cuddled!

After exploring Badlands National Park’s vastness, continue to Rapid City, where you’ll find plenty of lodging and dining options -undoubtedly one of the best family vacation spots in the Midwest. Starting in Chicago and ending in Santa Monica, this road trip has nostalgic Americana written all over it. Back in the day, this USA road trip was a favorite for families and friends to venture the road to see the West Coast, and even though the route is not as popular anymore, it remains a dream to complete for many!

Although some parts of Route 66 have been overrun by freeways, large parts of it are still used, and citizens who live in the towns along the way have made huge efforts to revive it. Route 66 is all about nostalgia, resilience, quirky highlights, and fantastic scenery.

Iconic stops along the route are the Gemini Giant, Route History, the Gateway Arch, Meramec Caverns, the giant Blue Whale, Pops Diner, The Leaning Tower of Texas, Cadillac Ranch, the Santa Rosas’s Blue Hole, Meteor Crater, Petrified Forest National Park, Elmer’s Bottle Tree Ranch, and the Mc Donald’s Museum.

They don’t come much mightier in America than the Great River Road, following the Mississippi River through 10 states. From the headwaters at Lake Itasca in Minnesota all the way through to the mouth in the Gulf of Mexico, the GRR is a wonderful showcase of the best the Midwest has to offer.

Far more than just flat farmland, there are dozens of interesting stops and side turns you can make on this 3,000-mile-long route. Some unmissable stops include the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area, the picturesque town of Dubuque in Iowa (baseball fans will want a side stop to Field of Dreams), and Gateway City, St Louis.

Heading further south, Memphis is a must-stop, along with the National Civil Rights Museum and Graceland, followed by the Mississippi River State Park in Arkansas and the old port town of Helena. New Orleans is, without a doubt, the crowing highlight of the GRR before reaching the Gulf of Mexico.

Top Tip: The official GRR route is about 50% longer than taking the Interstate; You may choose to mix and match the original route – marked with a green steamboat wheel on road signs – with the Interstate to save some time.

16. Appalachian Trail

If you’re not big into hiking but still dream of following the Appalachian Trail, fear not; there is a road trip version you can take that shadows the 2,100-mile route all the way from New England to the Deep South.

This epic scenic drive will take you through 14 states. You’ll witness some of the most contrasting landscapes on the east coast of the USA. Fascinating and wealthy historical towns give way to former mill towns, mountains to plains.

Your route starts in Maine and takes you through the incredible peaks of the White Mountains and New Hampshire’s Presidential Range – taking the Kancamagus Highway, NH is a must!

Another can’t-miss landmark is the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum, where visitors can honor the victims of the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in 1995. The museum was created on the exact spot where the bombarded building used to stand and details the tragic events that pay tribute to the 168 people who perished on that dreadful day.

For history and architectural buffs, make sure not to miss out on visiting the Oklahoma City State Capitol, where you’ll find lavish Greco-Roman-style architecture complete with marble stairs, hand-painted ceilings, and a grand dome!

2. Chickasaw National Recreation Area

Made up of two adjoining parks (Platt National Park and Arbuckle Recreation Area), Chickasaw National Recreation Area is a go-to for Oklahoma residents to enjoy nature.

The park homes beautiful lakes, natural freshwater springs, and lots of wildlife and interesting flora. The park’s name actually translates into “The Peaceful Valley of Rippling Waters”, and once you get there, you’ll see exactly why it got that name!

3. Tahlequah

If you want to experience authentic Native American heritage, there’s no better place to head to than Tahlequah. This city is located in the heart of the Cherokee Nation and provides a superb chance for visitors to learn about their culture and honor their painful history.

One of the things you can’t miss out on doing while visiting Tahlequah is checking out the National Cherokee Capitol. This building was constructed in 1867 after the original wooden one was burned in a fire during the Civil War.

Today, the building is still in use and currently homes the Cherokee County courthouse and the Cherokee National History Museum. Here, you’ll find exhibits and artifacts that tell the stories of Cherokee life and culture before colonization.

Moreover, Tahlequah is part of the Trail of Tears, a route the Five Tribes (Cherokees, Creeks, Choctaws, Chickasaw, and Seminoles) were pushed to follow when they were forced out of their lands in Alabama, Tennessee, and Georgia back in the 1830s. They followed the trail on foot, wagons, and horses, with the journey ending in Indian Territory (what we know as Oklahoma today).

4. Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge

Tucked away in the heart of the Wichita Mountains, this wildlife refuge encircles over 60,000 acres of ancient granite mountains, lakes, and prairies, providing a safe haven for several species of animals that visitors are able to spot frequently.

During your visit, you’ll get to see species like Rocky Mountain Elk, longhorn, and tons of herds of bison, who seem to have made the refuge their favorite hangout spot!

Aside from being a perfect place for wildlife viewing and photography, Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge is also a great destination for birdwatching, fishing, kayaking, and hiking and makes for one of the most wonderful scenic drives in Oklahoma.

1. Chicago to St. Louis on Route 66

The Most Scenic Drives in Arizona

1. Scenic Drives in Arizona: Red Rock Scenic Byway (Highway 179)

• Distance: 15 miles

While the Red Rock Scenic Byway is pretty short at just under 15 miles, it sure makes up for its lack of length with insanely dramatic scenery and tons of wonderful stops worth making.

This scenic byway connects Interstate 17 with Sedona, which pretty much guarantees striking desert vistas every mile of the way. As you make your way to Sedona, you’ll be treated to gawk-inspiring views of desert spires, whacky-looking rock formations, and several unique landmarks including a cathedral built atop red rocks.

Aside from its unbeatable desert scenery, you’ll also get the chance to make a stop at Tlaquepaque, a historical Spanish village you can explore for a few hours. Moreover, there are several hiking trailheads along the road, which provide a perfect excuse to park your car.

2. Scenic Drives in Arizona: Desert View Drive (SR 64)

• Distance: 23 miles

If you want to see as much of the Grand Canyon as possible without having to make much effort, the Desert View Drive is perfect for that.

This drive will take you to some of the most popular viewpoints of America’s most famous natural landmark, all while providing gorgeous views of the Grand Canyon along the way.

A few stops worth making include Moran Point, Navajo Point, Lipan Point as well as the Tusayan Pueblo and Museum, where you can learn more about the canyon. Moreover, there are a few trailheads scattered along the road in case you want to explore further afield on foot.

As a tip, keep in mind this is one of the most popular scenic drives in Arizona, so expect lots of crowds, especially during the summer months.

3. Scenic Drives in Arizona: Apache Trail Scenic Byway (Highway 88)

• Distance: 44 miles

Once utilized by the Apache people to cross the mountains, the Apache Trail Scenic Byway is a 44-mile scenic drive that will take you across the northern section of Superstition Mountain.

Gorgeous views are guaranteed every mile of the way. A few of the landscapes you’ll get to see include canyons, mountains, and deserts. There are several lookout points scattered around the byway, so plan a few stops along the way to fully take in the views!

Keep in mind that the only community you’ll find along this byway is Tortilla Flat, which boasts a total population of 6 people! It does have a small coffee shop in case you want to stop for a break, though.

Past Tortilla Flat, the road starts getting pretty narrow, so moving past this point is not recommended for large RVs.

Top Tip: Check the USDA Forest Service website for closure information before you set off as parts of the trail have been closed indefinitely since the Woodbury Fire in 2019

4. Scenic Drives in Arizona: Catalina Highway (Sky Island Scenic Byway)

• Distance: 27 miles

Taking you all the way to Mount Lemmon, Catalina Highway begins in Tucson and is the perfect scenic drive to take if a little variety in the landscape is what you’re after.

Along its 27 miles, the scenery changes dramatically, with mountain forests, plunging desert canyons, and rockscapes being just a few of the terrains you’ll get to cross as you move through the alluring Catalina Mountains.

Aside from getting to experience surprising changes in scenery every few minutes, this drive is also great for wildlife aficionados, campers, and hikers.

Did you know it SNOWS in Arizona?! Yup, Mount Lemmon Ski Valley is the southernmost ski destination in the USA, getting up to 4.6 meters of annual snowfall! Check road conditions before setting out in winter as there can be occasional closures.

5. Scenic Drives in Arizona: Monument Valley Scenic Drive (Highway 163)

• Distance: 17 miles

Want to feel like you’re driving inside a Wild West Movie? It’s not exactly a secret that Monument Valley is one of the most quintessential landmarks of the Southwest. Exploring it from the comfort of your car is a guaranteed way to see as much of it as possible.

The Monument Valley Scenic Highway or Highway 163 will take you on a true adventure through Navajo Land (which is partially into Utah), with striking desert scenery keeping you company every second of the way, including towering desert spires, strange rock formations, and red rock scenery as far as the eye can see.

Aside from getting to feel as though you’re driving on Mars, this scenic drive will also have you making a stop at a peculiar-named village called Mexican Hat as well as a suspension bridge over the San Juan River.

Important to Note: Entry to the scenic drive, is not available on America the Beautiful National Parks Pass, you are entering the Navajo Tribal Park. Entry is $20 per vehicle on a first-come, first-served basis; open daily but some annual holiday dates apply.

6. Scenic Drives in Arizona: ​​Ajo Mountain Drive

• Distance: 21 miles

The Ajo Mountain Drive is a loop track that cuts right through Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, giving you the unique opportunity to explore one of the most beautiful sections of the Sonoran Desert.

Enchanting views are guaranteed every mile of the way as you make your way to the top of the alluring Ajo Mountains. Along the road, you’ll get to see volcanic mountains draped in desert flora as well as expansive cactus plains and, of course, tons of organ pipe cacti!

If you’re up for a hike, two trails start by the road: The Bull Pasture/Estes Canyon Loop and a short trail to a natural arch.

7. Scenic Drives in Arizona: Swift Trail Parkway

• Distance: 33 miles

Taking you all the way from the desert Gila Valley to 10,000 feet at the summit of Mount Graham, the Swift Trail Parkway is king when it comes to quick changes in scenery and picture-perfect bird-eye views.

Most of the highway is twisty as it winds its way up through the mountains. You’ll get to see desert grassland, cross oak-sage chaparrals, and drive through stands of Podenora pine, firs, aspen, and spruce.

Almost at the very end of the road and right before you reach the summit of Mount Graham, you’ll stumble across the beautiful Riggs Flat Lake, where you can picnic, boat, and even camp if you feel like making a stop before finishing the drive.

8. Scenic Drives in Arizona: Wupatki National Monument to Sunset Crater

• Distance: 35 miles

Located north of the town of Flagstaff, this 35-mile scenic loop connects two national monuments in Arizona – Wupatki and Sunset Crater.

Along the route, you’ll get to see the colorful landscapes of the Painted Desert far off in the distance, beautiful red rock walls, and striking desert scenery all over.

The two highlights of this route are, of course, the national monuments, so plan two major stops along the way.

9. Scenic Drives in Arizona: Dinétah Scenic Road

• Distance: 100-miles

Providing drivers with the chance to experience Navajoland beyond the popular spots like Monument Valley, Dinétah scenic road is a 100-mile highway that will take you from the alluring Canyon De Chelly to Window Rock, which is considered the capital of Navajo Nation.

Along the way, you’ll get to explore a variety of Ancestral Pueblo ruins, cross the Lukachukai Mountains, and get to know Canyon de Chelly, the only national monument in the state where Navajo people continue to reside in. Once you get to Window Rock, make sure you pay the Navajo Nation Museum a visit, where you’ll get to learn more about the rich culture of the Navajos.
