In addition to the outdoor activities, there are a number of charming historic towns like Logansport and Zwolle where you can stop to get lunch or visit some of the local shops for a souvenir.

4. Louisiana Scenic Drives: Grand Isle Loop

Grand Isle is located on the far southern tip of Louisiana on the Gulf Coast. It’s the only inhabited island in Louisiana, and it’s known for its amazing beaches, charming small-town vibe, and amazing wildlife. 

If you’re looking for scenic drives in Louisiana to spend time on the beach and see the Gulf of Mexico, then this is the drive for you. Fishing is one of the most popular activities on the island thanks to the four fishing seasons and easy conditions for casting a line.

5. Louisiana Scenic Drives: Cane River National Heritage Trail Scenic Byway

• Time Needed: 1.5 hours driving, but one or more days is recommended

The Cane River National Heritage Trail follows the Cane River and is home to some of Louisiana’s most important historic sites, not to mention the beautiful landscape. Along the red-soil banks of the river, sprawling restored plantations and distinctive landmarks characterize this area of Louisiana scenery. 

To best appreciate the experience, it’s recommended to make stops at some of the sites. Although you can view the plantations and historic areas from your vehicle, it’s only by getting out to view them in person that you get an appreciation of their history and impressive size. 

Natchitoches is a famous historic settlement dating back to when the region was part of the Louisiana Purchase area. Today, there are 33 blocks downtown filled with historic shops and restored buildings holding cafes and galleries. 

The Cane River Creole National Historical Park is located in Natchitoches as well which hosts a variety of year-round activities like festivals, concerts, and cultural events. 

At the Oakland Plantation, you can view one of Louisiana’s best-preserved Creole plantations and learn about what the area was like during the time of slavery. 

If you want to explore the natural area, head to Cane River Lake, where you can rent canoes or kayaks. The lake is also a good place for fishing, with a great pier that makes it easy for kids to try catching something without needing to take a boat trip.

1. Mississippi Scenic Drives: Great River Road 

• Distance: 250 miles

The Great River Road is one of the longest scenic byways in the United States and follows the Mississippi River its entire length from the headwaters in Minnesota all the way to the river delta in Louisiana. In Mississippi, the drive connects Memphis on the north end and Vicksburg on the south.

5. Tennessee Scenic Drives: Newfound Gap Scenic Byway 

• Distance: 31 miles 
• Time Needed: 1 hour or more 

If you’re looking for scenic drives in the Great Smoky Mountains, Newfound Gap should be top of the list. This is the only paved road through these mountains and has stunning scenery of vistas and forested areas. 

Driving isn’t the only thing that the Newfound Gap scenic byway is good for. The Appalachian Trail crosses the route, which any hiking enthusiast should plan on spending some time exploring. There are also several campgrounds like Smokefront Campground and places to stop for picnics like Chimney Tops picnic area and Collins Creek picnic area. 

The Newfound Gap Road is well-maintained and not difficult to drive, but it’s best to go slow not only to take in the scenery but also to avoid accidents on some of the turns the route takes. Thanks to the numerous pull-off points at overlooks like Campbell Overlook and Morton Overlook, there are plenty of spots to safely stop to get out of your car to take photos or just soak in the mountain air.

6. Tennessee Scenic Drives: Ocoee River Byway

Famous for being the first National Forest Scenic Byway established in 1988, there’s no doubt that the Ocoee River Byway remains one of the best Tennessee scenic drives. 

The route was first built in the 1830s when it was a wagon trail used for transporting copper from the copper mines in the region. 

There are lots of scenic overlooks on the drive, like the Ocoee Dam Overlook, which has a view of Sugarloaf Mountain, and Lakeview Overlook, which has a stunning view of Parksville Lake. 

The drive also holds plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation, from hiking to swimming. At the Lake Ocoee Marina, you can rent paddleboats, canoes, or other boats to explore Parksville Lake. Best Time to Drive the Smoky Mountains

Summer and fall are the best times of year to drive through the Smoky Mountains since these seasons offer good weather conditions and the most likelihood of spotting wildlife.

Spring can also be a good time to visit, thanks to the abundance of wildflowers. However, remember that sometimes the water runoff from melting snow can cause difficult driving conditions, especially on some of the lesser-traveled or gravel routes.

Driving in the Smoky Mountains in winter is also possible, but sometimes there can be road closures because of snowfall or ice.

Things to Know Before Visiting the Smoky Mountains  

When planning to travel on one of the scenic drives in the Smoky Mountains, always make sure to check road conditions and closures, which can be caused by ice, snow, or other inclement weather.

It’s also highly important to be mindful of the speed limit. The narrow twists and turns through the mountains can make it difficult to spot other cars or animals that might be crossing the road. Plus, you probably won’t mind going slower since you’ll have more time to appreciate the views and spot wild animals.

Many of the scenic drives in the Smoky Mountains have pull-outs, usually located about every mile. Use these to let faster drivers pass or stop to take photos and watch for wildlife.

Typically, the mountain drives in the Smoky Mountains don’t have gas stations, so it’s important to start with a full tank of gas to avoid getting stuck mid-route.

Do you need to pay to drive through the Smoky Mountains?

Unlike many national parks in the US, there is no entry fee to Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

The famous Blue Ridge Parkway connects Shenandoah National Park and Smoky Mountain National Park, and it’s considered one of the best scenic drives in the United States. Not only is the drive stunning, but it’s also historically significant as the first rural parkway in America.

It would be easy to spend several days exploring the hiking trails and swimming holes along the drive or camp for the night in one of the mountainside campgrounds. There are endless overlooks and vistas, which are great spots to stop for photographs or a picnic lunch while feeling like you’re on top of the world.

Waterrock Knob has some of the best views in the Smoky Mountains to watch the sunrise or sunset; it’s located around milepost 451, and there’s a place to pull off and park your vehicle. Although the views from the road are good, an even better vantage point can be found when you hike the mile to the very top of the Knob.

Close to Ashville, you’ll find the Graveyard Fields Waterfalls. These falls can be accessed by a relatively easy 3-mile hike, unlike some other waterfalls which are more difficult to reach.

If you want to add a historic stop along the drive, you can visit Flat Top Manor which is part of the Moses H. Cone Memorial Park. The elegant mansion displays artwork from local Appalachian artists, and the surrounding carriage trails and orchards are beautiful to explore.

2. Smoky Mountain Scenic Drives: Cades Cove Loop Road

Distance: 11 miles

Time needed: 1-4 hours or more, depending on stops

This one-lane, one-way road is a great way to enjoy the iconic rolling hills and mountain scenery of the Smoky Mountains. Halfway through the drive, there’s a small visitor center with information on the area and a gift shop selling trinkets and local artisan crafts.

Cades Cove is particularly popular among travelers looking for the best scenic drives in the Smoky Mountains to view some of the historic sites. The drive passes places like the John Oliver Historical Cabin, the Missionary Baptist Church Historical Structure, and the Cades Cove Historical Grist Mill.

These are great spots to stop for photographs to imagine what it would have been like for early pioneer settlers in the mountains. Reaching an elevation of 5,046 feet, the Newfound Gap Road certainly won’t disappoint when it comes to excellent scenic overlooks, namely Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The drive also offers some of the best diversity in scenery since it passes through hardwood forest, pine, and evergreen areas.

You can take a break to stretch your legs along the Appalachian Trail (AT), which crosses Newfound Gap Road. Your exploration of the AT could be a short ten-minute walk just to get out of the car, or it could be a multi-day backpacking adventure depending on your interests.

There are also several rivers and mountain lakes found along the drive, which are popular places for families to stop to go fishing, swimming, or try water sports like stand-up paddleboarding. 

4. Smoky Mountain Scenic Drives: Rich Mountain Road

Distance: 7 miles

Time needed: 30 minutes

This one-way drive is one of the most peaceful Smoky Mountain scenic drives. It starts in Cades Cove, then travels 7 miles along a narrow gravel lane through the forest to reach Townsend, Tennessee.

Rich Mountain Road is only open seasonally, usually between April and November, depending on the weather. Make sure you take this extra slow to account for the bumpy spots along the way. Among the top Gatlinburg scenic drives, Little River Road connects the popular town of Gatlinburg to Townsend. As you might guess from the name, the drive hugs the Little River and provides some of the best scenery in the Smoky Mountains as well as access points to top hikes and swimming destinations.

Get out to stretch your legs at the Laurel Falls trailhead and hike the easy 2.5-mile paved trail to reach the stunning waterfall. There are also places along the way with picnic areas, grills, and restrooms such as Metcalf Bottoms.

Several campsites are also located along the drive if you’re hoping to have a more immersive experience for some of the best views in the Smoky Mountains.

6. Smoky Mountains Scenic Drives: Tail of the Dragon

Distance: 11 miles

Time needed: 1-5 hours, depending on stops

With 318 curves in the short 11-mile distance, it won’t take you long driving through the Smoky Mountains to realize how this stretch of road got its name. The route is located in Deals Gap, North Carolina, and is particularly popular among motorcyclists and bikers.

What makes this road unique is that there aren’t any intersecting roads or driveways along the route, which makes it easier to enjoy the exhilarating experience of the twists and turns through the mountains.

It’s especially important to adhere to the speed limits on this Smoky Mountain highway, and it’s best not to drive the route in winter when road conditions become too hazardous.

1. Best Scenic Drives in Kentucky: US 23 Country Music Highway 

• Distance: 127 miles
• Time Needed: 1-2 days

The Country Music Highway takes you through Eastern Kentucky and is every country music lover’s dream. The Bluegrass state has been home to some of the biggest names in country music throughout the years, including Loretta Lynn, Chris Stapleton, and Billy Ray Cyrus, and as you drive along US 23, you will find many stops and landmarks that pay homage to those stars. 

Can’t miss stops along the drive: 

• Loretta Lynn’s Homeplace in Butcher Holler (Van Lear, KY) – This small town home is the family home of the biggest names in Country Music, Loretta Lynn. The house still stands today as an ode to Loretta and her family and is open for tours. To take a tour, visit Webb’s General Store #5, and set up a time. 

• Paramount Art Center (Ashland, KY) – If you’re a big movie buff, this is a can’t-miss stop for you! The Paramount Arts Center first opened in 1931 and is one of the first transitional theaters built for “talking pictures” made by none other than Paramount Studios. Today it still stands as a theater that hosts events such as concerts, stand-up comedy, ballet, and more!

• Hatfield-McCoy Feud Driving Tour (Pikeville, KY) – Everyone knows the famous feud between two southern families, the Hatfields and the McCoys. This is a self-guided driving tour in which you have the chance to see some of the most notable sites from the feud between these two families. 

When to go: This drive would be beautiful at any time of the year, but we especially recommend the Fall season when the leaves have changed, and you can see all of the colors in the landscapes and scenic areas around you. 

2. Best Scenic Drives in Kentucky: Big Bone Lick Scenic Byway

• Distance: 20 miles
• Time Needed: 1 day

This drive is a pretty short one, but the views are worth taking the time to make the drive. Years ago, mammals roamed the salt licks of what is now considered to be Big Bone Lick State Park. As you drive along the byway, you will see breathtaking views of the Ohio River and the historic site of Dinsmore Homestead.

Make a stop off the byway to visit Big Bone Lick State Park, where there are a number of fun activities and beautiful sights to see. Popular highlights include a visit to the Bison herd, taking a tour of the Big Bone Lick Museum, hiking trails, digging for fossils, and searching for Salt Springs along the Big Bone Creek trail. 

When to go: The byway and campsite are open year-round. In order to take advantage of all activities and facilities, it is best to visit between the months of March-November as some facilities are only available on a seasonal basis. 

Pro tip: If you would like to camp at the Big Bone Lick campsite, it is recommended to make a reservation ahead of time as space is limited.

3. Best Scenic Drives in Kentucky: Cumberland Cultural Heritage Highway

• Distance: 184 miles
• Time Needed: 1-2 days

The Cumberland Cultural Heritage Highway is one of the most popular byways in the state of Kentucky because of its beautiful landscapes made up of a number of routes and bodies of water in the area. A drive down CCHH will leave you relaxed and free from worries and stress!

There are a number of bodies of water that you will pass by as you make your way down the CCHH, including Dale Hollow Lake, Green River Lake, Big South Fork National Area, and most notably, Lake Cumberland, one of the best US lake vacation destinations for families.

While you can make the drive in just a single day, we recommend taking a couple of days when you reach the end of your trial at the beautiful Lake Cumberland, where you can enjoy fun outdoor/water activities, including rafting, fishing, swimming, and camping making for the perfect family-friendly getaway. 

When to go: The Summer months are the best time to take this road trip to ensure that you are able to take full advantage of Lake Cumberland and all of the fun the area has to offer. During this time, not only will the temperatures be nice, but the water will also be warm enough to enjoy!

4. Best Scenic Drives in Kentucky: Red River Gorge Scenic Byway

• Distance: 46 miles
• Time Needed: 1 day

The Red River Gorge is one of the most popular vacation destinations in Kentucky for those that love the outdoors. The Gorge is an outdoor lover’s dream with everything you can possibly imagine, including rock climbing, hiking trails through the Daniel Boone National Forest, zip lines, kayaking, campgrounds, and more.

While the Gorge itself is the star of this getaway, taking the drive down the Red River Gorge Scenic Byway is a pretty great experience on its own. 

While the Red River Gorge Scenic Byway will only take about an hour if you drive it straight through, be sure to account for some time in your agenda to stop and enjoy some of the landmarks along the way.

Some notable attractions along the way include the Nada Tunnel, the Gladie Visitor Center, where you can learn about the history and heritage of the Red River Gorge, and of course, views of the beautiful Red River.

You don’t want to miss The Gorge Underground Adventure where you will get the chance to travel through the cave in either your own kayak or ride as a passenger during a boat tour. 

When to go: Red River Gorge is open year-round for visitors, but the best time to visit is typically between the months of April-September. Try to avoid visiting during rainy conditions, as this can make outdoor activities a bit more difficult to navigate through and enjoy. 

Pro tip: Vehicles larger than 12 feet in width or height should enter the Gorge from the KY 715 end of the byway, and large vehicles may have trouble passing through the Nada Tunnel. 

5. Best Scenic Drives in Kentucky: US 68 Scenic Byway

• Distance: 104 miles
• Time Needed: 1 day

Kentucky is known as the Bluegrass state so we couldn’t make this list without including the US 68 Scenic Byway, as this route takes you through the Bluegrass region of Kentucky. 

Along your drive, you will see scenic farmland and pastures filled with breathtaking horse barns, tobacco fields, and incredibly beautiful limestone rock fences originally built in the 1800s. This drive is the perfect way to break away from the hustle and bustle of the cities and enjoy the calm and quiet of the farmlands.

Some notable stops include the Central Kentucky Wildlife Refuge, and the Tour D’Ville Bike Tour, and if you get hungry, be sure to stop in at Melton’s Great American Deli for lunch (Their Big Daddy Club sandwiches are to die for)!

When to go: This drive is a great one to take at any point throughout the year, as each season offers its own benefits and beauty as the scenery changes with the weather. 

6. Best Scenic Drives in Kentucky: Lincoln Heritage Scenic Highway 

• Distance: 71 miles
• Time Needed: 1 day

President Lincoln is one of the most notable presidents of the United States, and the Lincoln Heritage Scenic Highway has been designated in his name due to the history and culture that occurred in the region that the highway takes you through, as he was instrumental in those historical moments happening.

The highway will take you through six communities in Kentucky that were significant sites during the Civil War. President Lincoln grew up near Hodgenville, one of the communities you will pass through, as well as Bardstown, Springfield, and Danville-Boyle County.

Can’t-miss stops along the drive include The Abbey of Our Lady of Gethsemani, The Abraham Lincoln Birthplace Historic Site, where you can see the First Lincoln Memorial and Lincoln’s boyhood home, America’s oldest Trappist Monastery as well as the Bourbon Trail, which features eight bourbon distilleries that make for a great bourbon tour. (Fun fact: Bourbon is known as America’s official spirit) 

Pro Tip: It is highly recommended that you make reservations when visiting any of the bourbon distilleries as they are very popular, and spots may fill up quickly. 

When to go: This particular drive would be great at any time of the year. Keep in mind that if you are traveling during the winter months, it is best to pack layers, blankets, and extra food/water in your vehicle.

1. Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge

Set right on the Mexican border over the Lower Rio Grande Valley, the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge is a perfect place to head to if you love all things wildlife-related.

Home to over 400 species of birds, Laguna Atascosa boasts the largest number of bird species in the entire country.

As if that weren’t reason enough to convince you to pay this place a visit, it’s also the home to several endangered species such as the Texas ocelot and the Gulf Coast jaguarundi, making it a haven for those keen to get close to the animals that roam the Lone State State.

2. Cathedral of Junk

It’s not exactly a secret that Austin prides itself on its quirky vibes, and the Cathedral of Junk is a prime example of how weird and wonderful the city can get.

Set in the backyard of a local named Vince, this cathedral is exactly what its name sounds like – a “cathedral” created from random junk. Vince began “building” it (or his “clubhouse”, as he often calls it) back in the late 80s.

Over the years, it has continued to evolve, both by Vince’s efforts as well as locals who fell in love with the project and wanted to donate their very own junk to the cause.

3. Waco Mammoth National Monument

Keen to take a trip back in time to the Prehistoric era? Waco Mammoth National Monument is the home to the largest concentration of mammoth fossils to have died after a big natural disaster, and there are so many of them around that you won’t even know where to start looking!

Most of the mammoth fossils you’ll find here are said to be the result of a mudslide that took place almost 70,000 years ago (although that’s just a theory). As you explore the site, you’ll get plenty of opportunities to get close and personal to these gigantic extinct animals.

Moreover, you’ll also be able to see several other fossils, including those of a saber-tooth cat and bulls.

4. Cadillac Ranch

Founded back in the 70s, Cadillac Ranch is a huge art installation on Route 66 that features a collection of graffiti-covered Cadillacs that are partially buried in the ground.

The installation’s aim was originally to represent the American Dream, but today, most visitors come to see the incredibly photogenic scenery it provides!

Pro tip: Don’t forget to bring your own can of spray paint along, as visitors are encouraged to get creative and leave their mark on the cars!

6. Enchanted Rock

Located in the middle of the alluring Texas Hill Country, Enchanted Rock is a gorgeous pink granite mountain whose beauty is guaranteed to leave you awe-struck.

While the mountain’s eye candy is reason enough to give it its name, the reason it was actually named that way comes from the sharp sounds it emits on some nights when its surface contracts!

Being the second-largest granite dome in the country, hiking opportunities are aplenty. Another incredible way to experience Enchanted Rock is by spending the night at the park, where stargazing is an experience like no other, thanks to the lack of light pollution anywhere nearby!

7. Hamilton Pool

Encircled by limestones and featuring stalactites dribbling from the roof, Hamilton Pool is one of the most unique (and slightly otherwordly-looking) spots in the state to do some serious swimming.

To reach the pool, you’ll need to follow a hiking trail through a lush canyon, making the entire experience of visiting one that will make you feel as though you somehow landed in a setting from the movie Avatar!

Aptly named the “Natural State,” Arkansas is brimming with spectacular scenery from the Ozarks mountains to the Ouachita National Forest. You can hike to a mountain lookout, go kayaking on a river, and soak in natural hot springs all in one day!

Any road trip through the landscape of rushing rivers, rocky outlooks, and lush green forests is guaranteed to be amazing, which is why taking one of these scenic drives in Arkansas is a must!

We’ve taken a look at the top drives Arkansas has to offer and created this list, so you don’t miss out on any of the best routes. From short byways to long adventures, we’ve highlighted some of the must-visit places to help you map out a successful trip to Arkansas.

1. Arkansas Scenic Drives: Arkansas Scenic Byway 7

Distance: 290 miles
Time needed: 5 hours to 1 day, depending on stops

Practically crossing the state from north to south, the Arkansas Scenic Byway 7 is nationally recognized, and for a good reason. It passes through both the Ozark mountains and Ouachita National Forest, plus beautiful pine groves and picturesque farmland.

Although the road takes some narrow twists and turns in the mountains, it’s still a very easy road and is well maintained on account of its popularity.

Since it passes through many of the state’s top destinations, it’s easy to plan your trip around Byway 7, or break up the drive into multiple days if you want to really get the chance to explore.

On the northern end of the route, the Ozarks are known for excellent lookouts, such as the area known as the “Grand Canyon of the Ozarks” near Jasper. We’d highly recommend stopping for some photos here! Jasper also makes a great stopping point thanks to its historic downtown, cafes, and antique shops.

Farther south in the Ouachita National Forest, the Arkansas Scenic Byway 7 passes through Hot Springs National Park, known for the beautiful natural thermal springs and the five lakes with fishing, swimming, and water sports. The historic downtown of Hot Springs is also a great place to stop for shopping, lunch, or snacks.

When to go: Any time of year is okay to travel this route, but summer is best for outdoor activities like hiking, and during the fall, the colors are fantastic.

2. Arkansas Scenic Drives: Ozark Highlands Scenic Byway (Highway 21)

Distance: 35 miles
Time needed: 1-5 hours, depending on whether you stop and explore

One of the prettiest drives through the Ozark mountains, Highway 21 is a relatively short but absolutely jaw-dropping drive in Arkansas.

The route passes by five of the mountain rivers in the Ozarks: The Buffalo, the Kings, the White, the Big Piney Creek, and the Mulberry. These are all popular places for sorts of water activities like kayaking, fishing, and rafting, and there are plenty of resorts and cabins in the area if you’re hoping to spend even more time in the Ozarks.

Hikers can take note that the Ozark Highlands Scenic Byway also crosses the Ozark Highlands Trail, which offers 165 miles of a hiking trail to explore the mountains.

For travelers who are short on time or just passing through Arkansas, then this route is easily combined with the Arkansas Scenic Byway 7, which connects near Jasper.

When to go: Summer is the best time if you are interested in water sports. Otherwise, during fall, this Arkansas scenic drive is particularly famous for its stunning colors.

3. Arkansas Scenic Drives: Talimena Scenic Drive National Scenic Byway

Distance: 54 miles
Time needed: 1.5-1 day, depending on stops

Cruising along the winding roads over Rich Mountain and Winding Star Mountain in the Ouachita National Forest, every mile of this drive is full of incredible views.

What’s excellent about this Arkansas scenic drive is that it doesn’t take long to complete, but it can also easily be turned into a full day (or more!) of adventures.

All along the route, you’ll find access to some of the most popular hiking trails in the Ouachita National Forest, like the Queen Wilhelmina State Park Trails, the Billy Creek Trail, and the Earthquake Ridge Trail.

There’s no need to hike through in order to appreciate the views. All along the route, there are plenty of lookout points where you can stop and get photographs and several picnic areas for a memorable place to have lunch.

Keep in mind that there are no gas stations along the route, so even though it’s short, it’s best to gas up beforehand.

Pro tip: You’ll find restrooms and vending machines at all the Ranger Stations, and Queen Wilhelmina Lodge also has a restaurant onsite if you’d rather dine out than pack your own lunch.

When to go: Spring through fall is considered the best time to drive this route.

4. Arkansas Scenic Drives: Boston Mountains Scenic Loop

Distance: 40 miles
Time needed: 1.5-4 hours, depending on stops

Traversing the highest points in the Ozark Mountains, the Boston Mountains Scenic Loop was once a stagecoach route, and the twists and turns along this byway are still reminiscent of these times.

With beautiful vistas around every turn and several high-span bridges, there are countless opportunities to stop for photographs along this scenic drive in Arkansas.

For travelers looking for a more up-close experience of the Ozarks, the Boston Mountains Scenic Loop also passes by many starting points of hiking and mountain biking trails.

We’d recommend stopping in some of the towns along the way, such as Mountainburg, where you’ll find access to Lake Fort Smith State Park and Artist Point, which are known for their fishing, hiking, and other outdoor activities.

Fayetteville also makes an excellent place to get out of the car and explore, thanks to the historic downtown with a year-round farmers market and the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks.

If you don’t have much time, the Boston Mountains Scenic Loop is short enough that it’s easy to add to your trip, but if you have time to spare, you can turn this drive into a day of adventure.

When to go: Spring through fall are the best times of year to enjoy the scenery.

5. Arkansas Scenic Drives: Great River Road National Scenic Byway

Distance: 362 miles
Time needed: 7 hours to 1 day, depending on stops

Crossing ten states in total, the Great River Road National Scenic Byway follows the Mississippi River all the way from Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico.

Traveling the Great River Road is an excellent way to better appreciate the incredible landscape along the Mississippi River, whether you’re just driving in Arkansas or using this byway as part of a longer trip.

It’s a super family-friendly route thanks to the easy stops along the way including historic towns, parks, and picnic areas.

Along the route, there are numerous opportunities for outdoor activities in places like Lake Chicot State Park, which is known for boating and fishing, or Big Lake National Wildlife Refuge, which is a popular place for birders.

A lot of the towns located on this route also have interesting historical sites, such as the Delta Cultural Center in Helena, which is a museum located in a train depot from 1912.

When to go: This scenic drive in Arkansas is good year-round, although summer is best for outdoor activities along the route.

6. Arkansas Scenic Drives: Pig Trail Scenic Byway

Distance: 19 miles
Time needed: 45 minutes or longer if you plan on stopping

This scenic drive in Arkansas may be short in length, but it’s certainly not short on incredible views. Passing through the forests of the Ozark Mountains, the leafy foliage makes this drive truly gorgeous.

The zig-zag route includes incredible mountain vistas, waterfalls, and idyllic riverside scenery.

There are also plenty of places to stop and explore, like the Mulberry Mountain Lodge, where there are hiking trails and boating access points to the Mulberry River (boat rentals are also available!). You can quickly turn this short drive into an entire day of exploring if you want to see more of the Ozarks.

In the past, this route was given the nickname “The Devil’s Backbone” on account of the bandits and robbers who liked to take advantage of passing travelers. Today, there’s no need to worry about theft, just the opportunity to explore small towns and amazing natural scenery in Alabama!

The Natchez Trace Parkway is mainly well known for its wildflowers, and there are over 100 native species found along the route visible at different times of the year. There are also opportunities for hiking, camping, and picnicking if you want to spend even more time outdoors!

Keep in mind that sections of this byway in Alabama are designated bike routes, so be sure to drive carefully and watch for cyclists on the road.

Traversing the Gulf of Mexico, you’ll find some spectacular coastal scenery while driving this scenic byway in Alabama.

There are plenty of places to stop along the way to dip your feet in the warm water, get pictures of the lagoons and bayous, and taste some of the freshly caught seafood at local restaurants!

This area of Alabama is a natural haven, and you’ll pass by protected areas such as the Dauphin Island Audubon Sanctuary and Gulf State Park which offer opportunities to get out and stretch your legs along the trails. Birders will be particularly interested in this scenic drive in Alabama since the sanctuaries are home to some unique species of birds, and the region is an essential stop for many migratory species.

The Alabama coastal connection also passes some important historic sites like the historic Fort Morgan and the city of Fairhope, where you’ll find a fascinating history museum and lots of charming shops and restaurants in the downtown area.

When to go: You can travel the Alabama coastal connection at any time of year, but summer months are best for beachgoers, and spring and fall are best for birders hoping to see migratory species.

3. Alabama Scenic Drives: Talladega Scenic Drive

Distance: 26 miles
Time needed: 1-5 hours, depending on stops

One of the best drives in northern Alabama, the Talladega Scenic Drive takes you on gently winding roads through the Talladega National Forest set in the Appalachian Highlands. The route will bring you to Alabama’s highest point, Cheaha Mountain, where you can appreciate a stunning vista of the mountains and forest scenery!

Cheaha Mountain also makes a great point to stop for lunch since there are several restaurants and some souvenir shops near the peak where you can enjoy the stunning view and a delicious meal at the same time.

This scenic byway is close to Birmingham, and the route itself isn’t very long, making it easy to add to your itinerary for your road trip to Alabama. However, if you have time to explore, you can spend a whole day checking out the hiking trails and lookout points along the drive.

When to go: The byway is great to visit at all times of the year, although autumn is known for its stunning colors, and birders often travel the byway during spring and fall migration times.

4. Alabama Scenic Drives: Selma to Montgomery Historic Trail

Distance: 54 miles
Time needed: 1.5 hours direct or up to a day for exploring and stops

One of the most important historic byways in Alabama, the Selma to Montgomery route traverses the path marchers took during the Civil Rights Movement. There were three marches in total, the last one ending in Montgomery with one of Dr. Martin Luther King’s most famous speeches delivered to a crowd of nearly 30,000 people! 

Driving this Alabama byway, you’ll have the chance to visit many of the historic points along the trail.

Marchers would usually walk between seven to 17 miles a day and camp at predetermined sites along the way, where farmers or homeowners welcomed marchers despite the threats they often received from those who opposed the Civil Rights Movement. Each of these campsites, such as the Robert Gardner Farm and the Rosie Steele Property, are now marked so you can take a break to visit these crucial resting places.

Make sure you plan on stopping for photos at the Edmund Pettus Bridge, one of the most notable sites on the route where marchers were confronted by law enforcement.

When traveling this scenic byway in Alabama, we’d recommend planning for extra time in both Selma and Montgomery to see the historical sites in these cities, like the Brown Chapel AME Church in Selma and the Alabama State Capital Building in Montgomery!

When to go: Any time of year is great to travel the Selma to Montgomery Historic Trail.

5. Alabama Scenic Drives: The Appalachian Highlands Scenic Byway

Distance: 80 miles
Time needed: 3-6 hours, depending on stops

Exploring the Appalachian region in the north is a must for any road trip in Alabama, and the Appalachian Highlands Scenic Byway is one of the best routes to take. The 80 miles of gentle twists and turns through the mountains bring you past stunning vistas and beautiful green landscapes!

For those interested in getting out to do some exploration and spend more time in nature, there are several trail systems along the route, including the Lloyd Owens Canoe Trail and the River Canyon National Preserve.

You can make a whole day out of this trip by picking one of the five landing points on the Lloyd Owens Canoe Trail and floating down the peaceful Tallapoosa River! It’s a fun activity the whole family can enjoy during a road trip in Alabama.

If you’re more pressed for time, there’s no need to get out of the car to appreciate the views on this scenic byway in Alabama, such as the incredible vista from Lookout Mountain. We’d still definitely recommend stopping for some photographs!

This Alabama byway also passes through several historical areas, such as Fort Payne and the Benge Route Trail of Tears Historic Marker.

The town of Heflin can either be the beginning or ending point of the trip, and we’d recommend spending a bit of time in the historic downtown area, where you’ll find some great local restaurants and buildings dating back to the 1890s. 

You can also combine the Appalachian Highlands Scenic Byway and Talladega Scenic Drive on the same day since the two connect near the town of Heflin.

When to go: Each season has something unique to offer; in the spring, the area is known for its incredible wildflowers, and summer is great for vacationers and hiking. In the autumn, you can appreciate the colorful leaves, and winters are generally mild and good for driving.
