The Hollywood Sign is probably one of the most famous and recognizable landmarks in the United States, so you do not want to miss the chance to see it in person. While you are not able to travel up to the actual sign, there are a number of spots that will allow you to get a great view of this famous sign. 

Pro tip: Griffith Observatory is one of the best spots to catch a good view of the sign. Not only will you have a great view, but parking at Griffith Observatory is free, making it an affordable option for a great experience. 

Universal Studios Hollywood

If your family is a fan of theme parks, you won’t want to miss out on a visit to Universal Studios Hollywood.

A visit to the park gives your family a chance for a fun day of theme park rides, good eats, and references to some of the most famous blockbuster hits in history. While we love to spend a few days at Universal Studios to fully enjoy the experience, you can certainly enjoy the park and see a lot of it in just a single day.

Yosemite is a pretty large park, and to get a full experience, we recommend spending at least two days in the park. If you have extra time, you could easily spread your time across four days.

Our next destination is a long stretch, but it brings us into our next state as we travel to Bend, Oregon. Bend offers its visitors a number of activities to enjoy, including natural sights, art, and history. 

How Long Should I Stay in Bend?

After a 10-hour drive, you will likely want to take the rest of the day to relax and recuperate before getting into any activities. After your travel day, we recommend spending an additional 1.5 days, with the second half of your second day being used to head to our next destination. 

With more time, we’d recommend adding stops at two of the best national parks on the West Coast, Lassen Volcanic National Park, CA, and Crater Lake National Park, OR. Although you’d be rushed, you could fit in both with an extra 24 hours, stopping overnight at Redding or Klamath Falls to break up the drive.

Where to Stay in Bend

The city of Bend offers several lodging options for the family. Some of the best kid-friendly hotels offer swimming pools, playgrounds, game rooms, and more. If you are looking for a hotel to book, try the Best Western Premier or the Doubletree by Hilton. If you prefer to stay in an RV park or campground, a few great options in the area include Little Fawn Campground and the Bend/Sisters Garden RV Resort.

What better way to see a city than to participate in a scavenger hunt that will have you traveling through the city and stopping at some of the most important landmarks and stops throughout the city of Bend? The Ultimate Scavenger Bend does just that; you will see notable sites throughout your hunt, including murals, statues, and more. 

Deschutes National Forest

The Deschutes National Forest is nearly 1.6 million acres and makes for a perfect day outdoors with the family. There are a number of beautiful sights to see and outdoor activities to enjoy, including hiking, biking, horseback riding, and ATV riding.

During this visit, you can also see the Newberry National Volcanic Monument, a natural sight featuring lakes, lava flows, and beautiful rock formations. 

Bend to Yakima, Washington

Yakima is a city in Central Washington that offers beautiful scenery, quiet and peaceful surroundings, and a plentiful bounty of quality agricultural products. The city is known for the many beautiful apple orchards and wineries featuring fresh barrelled wine in the area. It is also rich in Native American history and is named after the Yakima Indians who resided nearby.

While Yakima is absolutely beautiful, it is not a city you need to spend a lot of time in. We recommend spending the day there and moving on to your next destination.

This museum offers a look into the history and culture of Yakima Valley. With everything from wooden wagons, Indiana arts & artifacts, natural history exhibits, and even a fully operational soda fountain from the 1930s!

As we mentioned above, Yakima is known for its plentiful and quality produce so it is only right that you see what we’re talking about and even have the chance to try some fruits and vegetables to taste the quality. At Yakima Valley U-Pick Farms, you will be able to pick a variety of produce, including berries, apricots, and eggplant, plus get the chance to see and pet the farm animals.

There are a number of outdoor activities for visitors to enjoy, including hiking and biking trails, water sports such as fishing and paddle boating, and horseback riding adventures.

As we continue to travel through Washington state, our next stop is one of the most recognizable cities in both the state and the United States, Seattle, and is the largest city in the state of Washington. Seattle is a beautiful city, surrounded by water, mountains, and forests.

Seattle is a beautiful city, and there is so much to see and do. If time allows it, we recommend spending at least two full days in the city to get a full experience during your stay.

The Seattle Space Needle is the most recognizable landmark in Seattle. The Space Needle stands at 605 feet tall and is definitely a sight you don’t want to miss when visiting Seattle. Hop on the elevator and ride up to the observation level, where you will experience the sights of Seattle from up above; the views are breathtaking!

Pike Place Market 

Pike Place Market is another can’t-miss attraction in Seattle. As you walk through the market, you will enjoy live music, street performers, art, and of course, a variety of fresh market foods. If you can stand the ick factor, seek out the nearby ‘gum wall’. Fun fact: Did you know that the original Starbucks cafe is located at Pike Place Market? If you are a coffee drinker, this is a can’t-miss experience for you!

Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP)

If you or your kids are a fan of pop culture, this is an attraction you will want to have on your agenda. As you walk through the museum, you will have the chance to see exhibits on some of the most famous concepts, people, and movies throughout pop culture history. Outside you’ll also find one of the best playgrounds in Seattle!

Pro tip: Seattle is known for its rainy weather conditions. If you are visiting the area, you can expect rain at least part of the time you are there, be sure to pack your rain gear essentials!

Seattle to Portland, Oregon

• Distance: 174 miles
• Travel Time: 2 hours and 43 minutes

As we head back down the coast, our next destination is Portland, Oregon. Portland is the largest city in Oregon and a stop you don’t want to miss when traveling through the state. Portland is known as an eco-friendly city due to the number of parks, bridges, and bicycle paths in the city that encourage gas-less travel. 

How Long Should I Stay in Portland?

The good news is that Portland is just a short drive from Seattle, giving you plenty of time to explore the city. We recommend spending at least a day and a half in the city to ensure you see the can’t-miss stops; however, there is plenty to see if you choose to dedicate more time to your stay.

The area that you choose to stay in Portland will determine the types of lodging available. For example, if you stay in Downtown Portland, you may consider Residence Inn by Marriott Portland Downtown/Riverplace. Other popular areas in the city include the Pearl District and Rose City Park.

If you are a fan of books and reading, you cannot miss a chance to see Powell’s, the largest new and used bookstore in the world. There are over a million books in the store, and simply traveling through the 10 rooms is a great way to spend a few hours. The store has quickly become a popular Portland landmark and tourist stop for visitors, covering an entire city block. 

Oregon Zoo

Local zoos are always a family favorite attraction for us. It seems to be an activity that every member of the family equally enjoys. The Oregon Zoo ranks in the top 20 in the US, featuring nearly 1,800 animals spanning over 200 unique species. 

International Rose Test Garden

As soon as you walk up toward the International Rose Garden, the smell of fresh roses will hit you. Walking through the garden creates a sense of relaxation and freshness that your family will love, particularly with the stress of travel! It is free to enter the garden, making it a great affordable activity for the family to enjoy. 

Bonus tip (Adults Only!): Portland is known for having some of the greatest wineries, coffee shops, and microbreweries in the US. If you are looking for an adult beverage you may consider checking out some local options.

Portland to Sacramento, California

• Distance: 579 miles
• Travel Time: 9 hours and 22 minutes

Traveling from Portland to Sacramento will be another long stretch of travel time that may be tiring and long, but this will bring us full circle back into the state of California and heading back to our origin point of LA.

Being the capital of California, we thought Sacramento would be a great final stop on our road trip. There is plenty to see and do in Sacramento that will make for your family vacation’s perfect ending.

How Long Should I Stay in Sacramento?

Because of your long travel time, you will likely want to spend your arrival day resting and recharging to hit the city the following day. You can wrap up your trip heading back to LA in just a few hours, so we would recommend spending whatever days you have left to spare in Sacramento exploring the area, at least one full day, but there is room for additional days if you have them.

There are a couple of areas we recommend staying in Sacramento, depending on the type of stay you are looking for. If you would prefer to be in the heart of the city, we recommend finding lodging in Downtown Sacramento.

Comparatively, if you prefer a more low-key, family-friendly environment, you will want to look for something on the west side of the city near Davis, about 20 miles away from downtown.

The California State Capitol Museum showcases the state’s history in a variety of exhibits. As you make your way through the museum, you will learn so much about California and how it has evolved over the years.

Exhibits do rotate regularly, so you never know what you may learn during your visit. Popular exhibits in the past have included Iconic California: The State Symbols that Represent California and The Road Ahead: The Automobiles Impact on California. 

Fairytale Town

If you’re looking for a day of fun, a visit to Fairytale Town is highly recommended. Fairytale Town is a non-profit amusement park dedicated to bringing kids joy.

The park hosts attractions that feature some of the most famous storybook characters through time. Plus, kiddos will get the chance to learn during their visit and pet real-life animals. 

Old Sacramento Waterfront

If you want to enjoy all that Sacramento has to offer in one spot, spending the day at Old Sacramento Waterfront is the perfect way to do so. This historic district features attractions, entertainment, shopping, and dining experiences that embody the culture and vibe of Sacramento. There is something for everyone at the waterfront, and your family will be sure to have a great time!

Sacramento to Los Angeles, California

• Distance: 386 miles
• Travel Time: 6 hours

As our trip comes to a close, we will travel from Sacramento back to Los Angeles, and it is safe to say that you will be worn out and tired of traveling! Your route back to LA opens a great opportunity to make quick stops and travel through popular cities in California, including San Francisco and San Jose if you have any additional time to spare.

You will add an additional hour and a half, taking the more scenic Highway 101 back to LA. Or, if you’re prepared for the dramatic winds and bends of Highway 1, your journey will take closer to 10 hours (but will encompass Big Sur and some of the most epic coastal scenery in North America!).

If we’re being honest, there really isn’t a bad time to visit Southern California. It is rare to have a rainy day or inclement weather in Southern California, so you will have plenty of freedom to enjoy all of the activities you plan. 

San Diego in the winter months typically enjoys mild and pleasant weather, with average temperatures ranging from the mid-40s to the mid-60s Fahrenheit. Visitors can expect mostly sunny days, with only occasional rain.

During the summer, Southern California offers warm and sunny weather, with temperatures typically ranging from the high 60s to the low 80s Fahrenheit. The city of San Diego experiences low humidity and minimal rainfall, ensuring plenty of sunny days to enjoy its beautiful coastline and outdoor attractions.

Where to Stay in Southern California

The place you choose to stay should be picked based on the activities that you plan to participate in. If you’re visiting Southern California with your kids, we recommend staying in sunny San Diego. Popular neighborhoods include Oceanside, Escondido, and Fallbrook. 

If you’d rather stay closer to popular attractions, including Disneyland and Universal Studios, we would recommend staying in Los Angeles or Anaheim to be a bit closer to these attractions and save you some travel time. 

A rental property or Airbnb anywhere on the Pacific Ocean coast between the two would also be a good compromise.

How to Get Around in San Diego

We have found that getting around a city like San Diego is best for traveling by car. You can choose to do this through rideshare programs/taxi services or by getting a rental car.

Rideshare services are convenient and easy to obtain, but depending on how much you are moving around, you may end up spending a lot of money on trips. 

If you are flying in, we recommend considering a rental car for your Southern California vacation. Perks to having a rental car include the freedom to travel when and where you want. Plus, when it comes to cost, you really will find that the rental car is almost always worth it when you compare it to paying for daily rideshares or taxi rides.

1. San Diego Zoo – Balboa Park (Paid/Go City)

The San Diego Zoo is not just one of the best zoos in the United States, but it has actually been considered one of the best in the world for many years. 4. Belmont Park – Mission Beach (Free/GoCity)

Belmont Park is an iconic beachfront boardwalk amusement park located at Mission Beach. The park offers free admission and parking to its guests, but if you would like to enjoy any games or rides you will need to purchase a Ride & Play Pass. One of our personal favorites includes the Giant Dipper Roller Coaster, a historic wooden roller coaster originally established in 1925!

Pro tip: If you plan to ride any rides, it’s best to not purchase ride tickets at an ala carte cost. Rather consider purchasing a general Ride & Play pass that will give you unlimited access to all rides and attractions. 

5. Balboa Park (Free)

Balboa Park is a beautiful park located just minutes from downtown San Diego and one of the city’s best free things to do. Here you can enjoy a number of fun activities and attractions including 17 museums, gardens, and parks!

With young kids, don’t miss out on a ride at the historic Balboa Park Carousel, originally built in 1910! The carousel features 27 intricately hand-carved horses and 25 other animal species. 

In terms of the museums, some real hits with our kids have included the San Diego Natural History Museum and the San Diego Air & Space Museum.

Top Tip: Arrive early in the day to nab a parking spot close to the attractions you want to see (otherwise you may need to got to overflow parking and catch a shuttle bus)

6. The New Children’s Museum – Downtown San Diego (Paid)

Taking the time to enjoy history and learn while on a vacation is always a great way to spend the day in our opinion! The New Children’s Museum in San Diego is incredible, featuring a number of exhibits and activities for kids to enjoy, including clay art and painting!

7. Living Coast Discovery Center – Chula Vista (Paid)

The Living Coast Discovery Center offers a number of animal encounters for its visitors, including an aquarium, the turtle lagoon, raptor row, and the beautiful native Pollinator Garden. 

8. La Jolla Cove – La Jolla (Free)

La Jolla Cove is a very small beach between sandstone cliffs at La Jolla Shores. This area is small and quaint, with beautiful views that you do not want to miss out on. The cove is also an excellent spot if your family enjoys snorkeling or scuba diving!

9. Oceanside Pier – Oceanside (Free)

The beaches at Oceanside, California, are beautiful, and the Oceanside Pier has plenty of dining, attractions, and shops to enjoy for families. If the weather is suitable, enjoy a beautiful day at the beach, and if the ocean is a little too chilly, a walk on the pier will be a great way to spend the day.

10. San Diego Padres Game at Petco Park – Downtown San Diego (Paid)

The Hollywood Walk of Fame is located on Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles. This gives your family the chance to see and take photos with some of Hollywood’s favorite stars!

Another popular theme park in the area is Universal Studios Hollywood.  Here, you can enjoy rides and attractions based on some of the most famous motion pictures in Universal Studios history, and you will even get the chance to see a behind-the-scenes look at a real film studio on the backstage tour!

18. Santa Monica Pier – Santa Monica (Free)

The Santa Monica Pier is very popular as it is part of the famous Route 66! Whether you are looking for a day to spend at the beach or you simply visit for fun on the pier, your family will be sure to have a great time! 19. Venice Beach (Free)

22. Old Town San Diego (Free)

A visit to Old Town San Diego gives you the opportunity to see the history of California and take in the culture around you. 23. Sesame Place San Diego – Chula Vista (Paid)

This theme park is based completely on Sesame Street! The park features a number of rides and attractions in a combination of dry and water rides. Additionally, you can visit the Sesame Street Neighborhood where you can see and meet the iconic characters from Sesame Street and even see the iconic 123 stoop!

24. Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve – La Jolla (Free)

The Reserve is home to the rare Torrey Pine tree and is a great location for spending the day outdoors with the family. A few great trails to embark on, particularly with younger children, include the Guy Fleming Trail and the Discovery Trail. 

25. Waterfront Park – Downtown San Diego (Free)

If you’re looking for somewhere to cool down and have some fun, a visit to Waterfront Park is a great way to enjoy the day! This park features playground equipment, grassy areas perfect for a picnic, and fun interactive water fountains that are perfectly okay for the little ones to play in and enjoy.

26. Seaport Village – Downtown San Diego (Free)

Distance Driving the Oregon Coast with Kids 

If you’re planning to drive the Oregon Coast, there’s one road to take, and that’s US-101 South, aka: the Oregon Coastal Highway. The full distance from Astoria in the north to Brookings, on the border with Washington, covers 340 miles. Lucky for us, the 101 is the most gorgeous Oregon coast scenic drive and has plenty of things to do and see with kids. 

Now, if your starting point is Portland, you’ll tack on about 100 miles to get to Astoria, taking I-5 North and US-30 West. Although it’s not exactly on the Pacific Coast, it’s still a gorgeous Oregon Coast scenic drive.

You’ll travel along the Columbia River and be able to explore places like the Lewis and Clark National Wildlife Refuge, which is considered one of the best places to visit on the Oregon Coast.

How Long is the Oregon Coast Drive with Kids? 

The full Oregon Coast drive from Astoria down to Brookings takes, on average, just over seven hours to complete. That bumps up to nine hours if you’re coming from Portland.

But those times are if you’re not stopping. Let’s be real. This is about enjoying the drive, taking your time, and enjoying everything the Oregon coastline has to offer. Instead, with all of the amazing things to see and do, you can spend a good week making your way down the 101.

The best time of year to drive the Oregon Coast with kids or without has to be during the summer. You’ll find the warmest and driest weather June through September.

During the summer, temps can rise as high as the mid-80s. But you should always prepare for cooler temps, wind, and the possibility of rain (yes, even in the middle of summer!)

12 Best Stops on an Oregon Coast Road Trip With Kids  

1. Astoria

There’s no better place to start your epic Oregon Coast vacation than Astoria. As the first town in the state, it holds great historical significance. But more importantly, it’s the perfect place to visit with kids.  

Go for a ride on the Astoria Riverfront Trolley. Everyone in the family will love riding the historic trolley along the southern bank of the Columbia River. It’s only $1 to board and travels about 3 miles. 

A totally different way to see the city is to climb The Astoria Column. Modeled after the historic Trajan’s Column in Rome, the Astoria Column was built in 1926, showing images of Astoria’s history. Today, you can climb all 164 steps to get a 360-degree view high above it all. Visiting and climbing the column is free, but you will need to pay for parking.

Both Fort Clatsop National Monument and Lewis and Clark National Historical Park are great ways to bring history books to life. Kids will love walking around the encampment that Lewis and Clark established when they reached the west coast. 

There’s no better place in Oregon for kids than the Columbia River Maritime Museum. They’ll love learning all about seafaring vessels and shipwrecks in particular. It’s only $5 for kids and free for those 5 and under.

Pro Tip: Kids and kids-at-heart who love the 80s movie The Goonies, consider visiting in early June. Astoria (the setting of the film) celebrates Goonies Day each June 7th with special events and even a showing of the movie in the Columbian Theatre– a super cool activity to do with your kids on the Oregon Coastal road trip.

2. Warrenton

Okay, so Warrenton is super close to Astoria (just across Youngs Bay to the west), but it’s such a great place that we had to give it its own spot on this list of things to do when driving the Oregon Coast with kids. 

A must-do in Warrenton is visiting Fort Stevens State Park. Kids and adults will love checking out a real shipwreck Wreck of the Peter Iredale, walking the beach, hiking any of the 15 miles of trails, checking out Historic For Stevens, and kayaking in the Trestle Bay. 

For family fun that gets your blood pumping, head to High Life Zipline Park. You’ll be soaring through the trees – a completely different way to appreciate the Oregon Coast with kids.

Pro Tip: Fort Stevens Park offers year-round camping, including RV hookups, making it the ideal place to stay on your Oregon Coastal road trip.

3. Seaside

Heading down the Oregon Coast, the next no-brainer stop is Seaside. It’s just over 12 miles south of Warrenton, making it a short drive down the Oregon Coastal Highway.

Seaside is one of the best places to find things to do on the Oregon coast with kids. Catering to families, you’ll find tons of restaurants, ice cream shops, and arcades. Don’t miss walking the Seaside Promenade, riding the carousel, and visiting the Seaside Aquarium. 

Pro Tip:  Since it’s so close to Warrenton, you could choose to stay in either place and easily visit the other. As a major destination, you’ll find tons of places to stay in Seaside, like Seaside Thousand Trails. 

4. Cannon Beach

On the road again, the next stop on this epic Oregon Coast road trip, Cannon Beach, is only 8 miles down the coast from Seaside and one of the best places to visit on the Oregon Coast.

With its iconic Haystack Rock and Sea Stacks on the shoreline, you’ll recognize this special place right away. Maybe the kids won’t recognize it from movies like The Goonies and Kindergarten Cop, but the grownups definitely will. 

Make sure to visit the beach during low tide. It’s the best time to walk out to the rock and see it up close. Kids will love finding sea creatures in the tidepools, too. Keep an eye out for puffins that call Haystack Rock home during the spring and summer months. No wonder Cannon Beach is one of the best Oregon beaches for families. 

Just north of Cannon Beach is Ecola State Park, one of the best places to visit on the Oregon Coast. Running along the shore for 9 miles, the park has tons of hiking trails with beautiful views of the Pacific. 

5. Manzanita

Heading south from Cannon Bay on the 101, you’ll be in two more of the beautiful state parks that line the Oregon coastline: Arcadia Beach State Recreation Site and Oswald West State Park.

Arcadia is the perfect place to have a picnic, walk along the beach, and go tide-pooling. Unlike its neighbor up the Oregon coastline, Oswald West feels a bit more like you’re on an adventure, walking through a temperate rainforest and onto a secluded beach. 

Once you’ve enjoyed the parks, it’s on to Manzanita and Nehalem Bay. Seven miles of sandy beach means there’s tons of beachcombing to do. 

Pro Tip: If your family is looking for a different beach experience, why not ride a horse along the shores with Nehalem Bay Horse Excursions?

6. Tillamook

Heading inland just slightly, a great place to spend some time on the Oregon Coast drive with kids is Tillamook. 

Visiting the Tillamook Air Museum is a great activity for families with little ones who like planes. 

For some of the most delicious ice cream and cheese, make sure to spend some time in the House that Cheddar Built – Tillamook Creamery. Your taste buds will thank you.

If you’re planning to drive the Oregon Coast in the fall, definitely visit The Hydrangea Ranch. There’s plenty of harvest fun where you can pick a pumpkin from the patch, go on a hay ride, and get lost in the largest corn maze in Oregon. 

Another super cool thing to do is to take the kids on the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad. Now you won’t be traveling the entire Oregon coastline, but a 90 minute ride on a historic steam engine could be the ride of a lifetime for your family.

Pro Tip:  If you’re a family that loves exploring the beach, then you’ll love Oceanside just to the west of Tillamook. The best place to head is the Oceanside Beach State Recreation Site.

7. Neskowin Beach

On the way to the next stop of Neskowin Beach, make sure to stop at Cape Kiwanda Sand Dunes in Pacific City. Here, you’ll love climbing to the top of the enormous dune for a gorgeous coastline view. You may even spot historic Dory fishing boats in the water. If you’re driving the Oregon Coast with kids in July, check out Dory Days Festival Weekend.

The next must-stop on the Pacific Coast Highway is Neskowin Beach. Specifically, Neskowin Ghost Forest is a super cool place to visit if you’re into things that are a bit more on the creepy side. The Ghost Forest are the trunks of ancient trees that were buried thousands of years ago and have only been brought to the surface in recent years. So, although this isn’t a spooky ghost story feel, it can be a great discussion topic for kids who are studying history and science. 

Neskowin Beach also has great tidepools and warmer water than others, making it one of the best beaches to visit the Oregon Coast with kids. 

Pro Tip:  Neskowin Beach RV Resort is a solid choice when looking for a place to stay in the area. They also have cabins to rent if you’re not making the Oregon Coast drive in a house on wheels. 

8. Depoe Bay

One of the biggest draws of visitors to the Oregon coastline is whale watching. And there’s no better place to do it than in Depoe Bay.

Although it may be difficult for most of us to figure out which whales are in the area and which are on the move, the OPRD Whale Watching Center is ready to help. They’ll answer all of your questions and even help you spot the Grey, Humpback, or Orca. 

Don’t miss seeing the Devil’s Punch Bowl just south of Depoe Bay. The powerful sea smashing into the rocky coast created this amazing rock formation. It’s super cool to check out any time, but during the winter months, the agitated, energetic sea makes the bowl super active.  

Pro Tip: Remember to bring our binoculars.  If you forgot to bring your binoculars on your Oregon Coastal road trip, don’t worry! The Whale Watching Center has some to borrow. 

9. Newport

About 133 miles from the start of the trip in Astoria, the next major stop on the Oregon Coast drive itinerary is Newport. 

The major claim to fame is that Newport is the home to the Oregon Coast Aquarium, a favorite among Oregon Coast vacations. The whole family will love learning about life under the sea and walking through underwater tunnels, giving a different perspective. Jellyfish and Octopus encounters are a super fun experience kids love but are an extra expense.

Lucky for us, the Oregon Coast Aquarium is open daily and offers discounts for seniors, young adults, and kids, and is free for 0-2 years old.

Beyond the aquarium, Newport is a great place to stop when driving the Oregon Coast with kids. You’ll definitely be drawn to the Bayfront with all of its places to eat and shop. It’s also a great place to see the local sea lions. Let the kids run, climb, and play at Coast Park, a large playground area. 

Pro Tip:  Just south of Newport is Seal Rock State Recreation Site, which is a great place to see rock formations, go tide-pooling, and see sea lions and seals.

10. Florence

Seeing the wildlife on the Oregon Coast is one of the biggest draws to vacationing here. But sometimes, it’s hard for kids to know where to look. A perfect solution is visiting the Sea Lion Caves. As they say, it’s not a zoo, but there’s a good chance of seeing sea lions. So, hey, why not check it out? 

If you have kids into fairies, gnomes, or enchanted forests, go for a hike on the Hobbit Trail in Florence. At the trail’s end, you’ll be on the secluded Hobbit Beach, but it feels like you’re journeying into a magical place along the Oregon Coast.

For a totally awesome experience when driving the Oregon Coast with kids, hit the dunes. Sandboarding is all the rage at Sand Masters Park. You and the kids can rent a board for the day or take a lesson to learn the moves. Either way, you’ll have a blast. They’re open all week April–December but only Thursday through Sunday in the off-season.

Pro Tip: Places in Florence are RV-friendly. Specifically, most places have enough parking for RVs, which is nice to see. 

11. Siuslaw National Forest

Make sure to put Oregon Dunes National Recreation Center in the Siuslaw National Forest on your Oregon Coast drive itinerary. You’ll love all of the family-friendly activities within the park, like hiking the Sweet Creek Falls trail, which is only 1.1 miles but passes 11 waterfalls.

Kids and grownups alike can be Citizen Scientists in the park, too. The Agents of Discovery app is a whole new way for kids to engage with the nature around them in Cape Perpetua. Tahkenitch Area is the best place to go kayaking with kids, too. 

Just south of Siuslaw National Forest is Coos Bay, one of the largest towns on Oregon’s Coast. It’s nice to take a short stroll on the Coos Bay Boardwalk and learn about the town’s development and the importance of logging in the area.

Pro Tip:  Carter Lake Campground in the Oregon Dunes Recreation Area is a favorite place for families to camp.  

12. Brookings

We’ve made it! After traveling 338 miles down the Pacific Coast Highway, the final destination on this Oregon Coast road trip with kids is family-friendly Brookings. It’s here that you’ll find a number of the best Southern Oregon Coast attractions. 

Azalea Park is a favorite destination with locals and visitors. Kids (and kids-at-heart) will love playing disc golf, horseshoes, and playing on the large playground. The gardens in Azalea Park are a delight and are celebrated with the Azalea Festival every Memorial Day Weekend. If you’re in Brookings in the summer, check out life music at the American Music Festival in the park. In winter, it’s all about Nature’s Coastal Holiday Festival of Lights. 

Don’t miss spending time in Harris Beach State Park. With tidepools, soft sands, and gorgeous views, it’s definitely one of the best Oregon beaches for families. 

The Port of Brookings Harbor Boardwalk is the best place to bring the kids for seafood dinners and ice cream desserts. During the summer and early fall, it’s also the home to Saturday Markets at the Port featuring vendors and live music.

Pro Tip:  Harris Beach State Park is the perfect place to stay the night when visiting the Southern Oregon Coast. With RV hookups, tent sites, and yurts, you’re likely to find a type of camping that’s right for you.
