When to Plan Your Canadian Wildflower Adventure

Due to Canada’s northern latitude, wildflower season typically starts later than many international visitors might expect. While cherry blossoms may bloom in Vancouver by March, most of Canada’s wildflower displays don’t begin until late April or May.

The season then rolls like a wave across the country from west to east and south to north, with some Arctic and alpine regions not reaching peak bloom until July.

Coastal British Columbia sees the earliest blooms, followed by southern Ontario and the Prairies in May, while Maritime provinces and mountain regions peak in June and early July.

The extended daylight hours of the Canadian spring and early summer mean you’ll have plenty of time for flower viewing, with some northern regions offering nearly round-the-clock viewing opportunities during peak season.

Best Places to See Blooms in Canada

1. The Okanagan Blossom Trail, British Columbia

• Peak Bloom: Mid-April to early May

Wind your way through British Columbia’s sun-drenched Okanagan Valley, where orchards burst into pink and white blooms against a backdrop of rolling hills carpeted with arrow-leaved balsamroot and lupines. Start in Vernon and meander south through Kelowna to Penticton on Highway 97.

The route offers families plenty of kid-friendly stops, including the Davison Orchards Country Village, where children can take tractor rides through flowering orchards. Time your visit for the Okanagan Cherry Blossom Festival in April, featuring family activities and guided “blossom tours.”

Stay overnight in Kelowna, where lakeside hotels provide the perfect base for exploring. Don’t miss the short hiking trails at Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park, where spring brings patches of chocolate lilies and yellow bells.

2. Prairie Crocus Route, Manitoba

• Peak Bloom: Late April to mid-May

Follow Highway 16 west from Winnipeg through Riding Mountain National Park for a prairie wildflower experience your family won’t forget. The delicate purple prairie crocus, Manitoba’s official flower, carpets the grasslands in early spring.

The route takes you through charming small towns like Neepawa, known as the “Lily Capital of the World.” In Riding Mountain National Park, the family-friendly Prairie Trail offers easy walking access to wide meadows filled with three-flowered avens and white prairie crocuses.

Stay in Wasagaming, the park’s townsite, where the Clear Lake Trading Post offers ice cream treats and rental bikes. Spring brings the return of bison to their summer grazing grounds – a thrilling sight for young wildlife enthusiasts.

3. Bruce Peninsula Flower Trail, Ontario

• Peak Bloom: Early May to mid-June

The drive north along Highway 6 from Wiarton to Tobermory offers families one of Canada’s most diverse spring wildflower displays. The limestone-rich Bruce Peninsula hosts over 44 species of orchids alongside countless other wildflowers. Distance from Calgary to Vancouver – How Long Do I Need to Drive?

How Far Is Calgary From Vancouver?

The distance from Calgary to Vancouver is 1,057 kilometers (660 miles), taking the fastest route.

The drive from Calgary to Vancouver without stops takes 12 hours and 15 minutes. Most of the way, you will take Trans-Canada Highway 1 to Kamploops, then Highway 99. You will want to take 2-3 days to really enjoy the stops along the way, although we’d recommend longer to explore the incredible national and provincial parks more thoroughly.

An alternate route would be to head from Calgary towards Vancouver on Highway 22 (aka The Cowboy Trail) until you reach Lundbreck. From there, take Highway 3 through Fernie and Cranbrook, continuing on Highway 3 until you reach Hope, British Columbia.

From Hope, you will take Trans Canada Highway 1 towards Vancouver. This route takes 14 hours and is 1,226 kilometers (760 miles). It passes through Abbotsford, Surrey, Cranbrook, and Fernie, which are also fabulous stops in the Rocckies.  

For the purpose of this guide, we will focus on stops to make on the shorter northern route. 

Kananaskis

Explore “Alberta’s Mountain Playground” in Kananaskis Country, located between Banff National Park and Calgary. Kananaskis Country is home to some of the most beautiful areas in Alberta and outdoor activities, and the bonus is that it is not as busy with tourists as the other national parks we’ll mention in this guide. 

In Kananaskis, you will find four wildland provincial parks and five provincial parks just waiting to be explored. If you are looking to explore the rugged terrain, we highly recommend the Grassi Lakes trail, which is located in the wildlife corridor and where you will see the aquamarine lakes similar to the popular Lake Moraine.

Grassi Lakes has two trails: an easier path that showcases a dense forest and rock faces with hidden pictographs, while the more difficult route will take you to a steep section to view a waterfall and the town of Canmore in the distance. The easier route is about 5 km and is definitely family-friendly for most fitness levels.

Canmore

Stop in for a quick visit or check in for the evening and take a stroll down 8th Street, a pedestrian-only area with boutique shops, cafes, and restaurants. It is a gorgeous area for a stroll, as you can see the Rocky Mountains in the distance. Every Thursday in the summer, the Farmer’s Market is located on 8th Street.

Policeman’s Creek Boardwalk is the perfect area to stop with kids as it is an accessible walkway from the downtown area. At the entrance of the trail, you will find the Big Head Sculpture, which is a unique sculpture to see.  The 4km walk will take you through the forest and along the water for an easy scenic walk.

Pro Tip: Accommodation is much more affordable in Canmore than Banff; we recommend making this your first overnight stop before heading into the national park.

Banff

Visiting Banff is about taking in beautiful landscapes and exploring nature. Banff National Park is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream as there are so many beautiful landscapes to look at, but don’t worry, the kids will entertain themselves with nature along the trails. 

Take the iconic Banff Gondola to the upper boardwalk, which gives great views of the town of Banff and the surrounding mountains. You can even plan to stop for lunch at the restaurant at the top of the Gondola.

If you are looking to cool off in summer, then you may want to head to Johnson Lake, which has a small sandy beach for kids and makes for a great picnic spot – a fabulous free thing to do in Banff.

Johnston Canyon is another great spot as this family-friendly hike will take you near waterfalls and allows you to explore caves, though you may want to bring an extra set of clothes as there is a chance you get wet.

Save time for a bit of souvenir shopping and ice cream down Banff Avenue and Bear Street (noting that parking in Downtown Banff is tight; plan to park a bit further out and walk into town to prevent congestion).

Pro Tip: You need a Park Pass for the town of Banff, which is actually inside the National Park. You can purchase this online before your visit or at the park gates or visitor centre in town. If you are going to skip a stop here and keep driving through the TransCanada you won’t need the pass – just check what lane you are in!

Lake Louise

Enjoy the picturesque views of Lake Louise as you canoe and take great family photos with a mountain backdrop. Canoeing is a fun activity you can do as a family and make memories in this beautiful setting. You can rent the canoe from the Lake Louise boathouse. 

Pro Tip: Canoeing on Lake Louise costs about $145 CAD an hour, and they can hold a maximum of 3 adults of 2 adults and 2 children that weigh less than 55 pounds, otherwise, you will need to divide into 2 canoes.

Motivate your kids with the prospect of a yummy snack at the end of the hike as you hike the trail to the Lake Agnes Tea House. The hike up to the tea house is more tiring than the way down, so once you fuel up with a snack or lunch, the way down is a breeze.

If you are looking for a unique adventure, then you can try horse trekking around the lake. The local stables, Brewster Adventures, offer five different summer trail rides for you and the family to enjoy. 

Bow Valley Parkway

The Bow Valley Parkway takes about an hour to drive and connects Lake Louise and Banff. As you drive through this section, lookout for the following; you may choose to stop at some of the lookout points.

Three Sisters: Lookout for the three bare rocky peak mountains as you drive along the Trans Canada Highway through the Bow Valley as they are the Three Sisters Mountains – Faith, Hope, and Charity. They are nearly 10000 feet tall, so they are pretty hard to miss when looking out your window. 

Castle Mountain Viewpoint: This roadside viewpoint is a great place to stop and see the surrounding mountains, and if you want to explore further, there is a nearby trail.

Note that you WILL need a Park Pass for this scenic drive.

If you want somewhere to stay nearby, you can rent a cabin at Baker Creek By Basecamp. Each cabin has wood paneling, a log cabin design, and a kitchenette so you can save money and make your own food rather than eat out. 

Yoho National Park

High in the mountains of Yoho, you will find Burgess Shale fossils which are some of the oldest pieces of evidence of life on earth. Join a guided hike where you can choose to visit one of three different locations: Mount Stephen, Walcott Quarry, and Stanley Glacier (all have varying hiking distances).

The fossils are located high in the mountains pressed into the rock bed showing evidence of marine ecosystems from over 5 million years ago. This is a must-do Canadian Rockies Experience.

Parks Canada has placed over 200 red Adirondack chairs across Canada in unique treasured natural locations, and 2 sets of these chairs can be found while strolling through Yoho National Park. The chairs in Yoho National Park are located at Takakkaw Falls, and Yoho Lake, so sit and enjoy the quiet and peacefulness of the view.

Golden

Golden, British Columbia, is a great center point from some of Canada’s most beautiful scenery found in the following national parks: Yoho, Glacier, Kootenay, Jasper, Banff, and Mount Revelstoke. This is a great place to stop overnight, and then plan to visit one of these spectacular parks to enjoy hiking, waterfalls, lake views, and rich historical landmarks.

Golden, BC is a wilderness lover’s paradise as there is lots of hiking, water sports, fishing, white water rafting, and so much more to explore. Families will want to visit the Golden Golf Club Mini Golf Course, and the Golden Sky Bridge, located feet above the canyon with amazing views.

Glacier National Park

This is a beautiful National Park to simply enjoy the 360-degree view of alpine scenery and is open year-round.

If you are looking for a quick stretch break, then we suggest the Rockgarden Trail, which takes about 20 minutes to complete and will give you a quick view of the natural beauty of this park as you view the Selkirk Mountains.

Make sure you stop at the Memory Garden and Summit Monument to learn more about the rich history of the park and its involvement in Canada’s first trans-continental railway and highway.

Glacier National Park also offers a full day of exploring. If you have time, you will want to check out Roger’s Pass Discovery Centre, Hemlock Grove Boardwalk, Skunk Cabbage Boardwalk, Meadows in the Sky Parkway, and Glacier House to learn about the area’s true history and natural changes due to climate change.

Salmon Arm

Harold’s Provincial Park is home to a variety of hiking trails, including Margaret’s Falls, which is a stunning waterfall accessible by a few of the trails. The lower trails are accessible, so they are great for young kids and will take you along Shuswap Lake, through old-growth forest areas until you reach the magical waterfall.

Canoe Beach is perfect if you are looking to take a swim or just simply enjoy the beach. This location does have picnic tables, a concession stand, and a playground that can all be enjoyed during your visit.

Shuswap Pie Company is a great place to stop for lunch or to take a sweet or savory pie with you as a snack on the road. These pies are handmade and use local ingredients to ensure they are tasty and fresh. The store is located in Downtown Salmon Arm. 

Lastly, visit the record-breaking world Wharf as this wooden wharf is the longest in North America and is perfect to use for fishing or feeding the ducks. During the summer, you can often find live music and food trucks along the wharf.

Kamloops

Whenever we visit Kamloops, we make sure that we visit Riverside Park in the heart of the city as it is a great spot for families. Riverside park has two amazing playgrounds, a walking trail with a lookout to the Thompson River, and a splash pad.

In the summertime, there is a small concession stand that you can buy lunch from and eat at a nearby picnic table. Make sure you save room as Scoopz Ice Cream shop is located just across the street and has many ice cream treats to choose from.

Another family-friendly stop is at BC Wildlife Park, which is home to over 65 species of animals and 200 animals, including grizzly bears, cougars, wolves, and birds of prey. These animals are all animals that have been saved from the wild as they could no longer survive in the wild on their own.

The park runs a fun train around the park on weekends that the kids will enjoy. This wildlife park is the perfect excursion as it is not very big, so the whole park can be visited in 2-3 hours making it a great spot to stop and stretch your legs.

We’d suggest making this another overnight stop as there are several activities in the area and a decent range of accommodation options for different budgets. Sandman Signature Kamloops puts you in a good location on the waterfront and offers family rooms.

Bridal Veil Falls

This is one of the quicker stops you can make along the route, however, you don’t want to miss viewing this beautiful cascading waterfall that is over 60 meters tall. The water flows over the smooth rock face and creates a veil effect, thus giving the park the name Bridal Veil Falls. 

You will want to complete both walking trails to create a loop from the parking lot to the waterfall. Follow the path and then cross over the wooden bridge to get the best viewpoint of the falls.

The trail is uphill but not too steep. It takes you through the forest along the riverbank until you reach the falls. You can take the Woodland trail back to the parking lot or take the junction to the left to stop at a great picnic spot for lunch.

Crazy Creek Hot Pools

Experience the benefits of geothermal hot pools that are nestled in the woods among the mountain views. Relax in one of four pools at Crazy Creek Hot Pools, all ranging at varying temperatures from 40°C to 12°C (104°F to 54°F).

This family-friendly activity is available for children three years old and up, and a family pass costs $50 for two adults and two children.

Crazy Creek Resort also offers accommodations, including RV sites, tent camping, and cabins. The resort has so much for kids to do, including playgrounds, a bike track, waterfalls, and a suspension bridge accessible by walking trails, and is near many fun attractions like the Enchanted Forest, which is an old-growth forest with over 350 fairy sculptures along the mystic trail.

Cultus Lake

While Cultus Lake is a little bit of a detour, it is only 11 km south of Chilliwack which you will pass through on your way to Vancouver. Cultus Lake is the ultimate outdoor family playground and is the gem of the Fraser Valley. This recreation hub offers Cultus Lake, which is perfect for swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding, and swimming. 

Destination Cultus is a kid’s dream destination as it is home to a water park as well as an amusement park so that the whole family will be entertained. When you’re worn out from the park, you can check out the variety of amazing local restaurants, such as Lakeside Beach Club, which makes amazing wraps.

If you are looking for a resting spot, Sunnyside Campground has over 65 acres of campgrounds and lots of activities for the kids, such as playgrounds, boat rentals, and basketball and volleyball courts.

You are a little over an hour from Cultus Lake to Vancouver to complete your journey. It is one of the most stunningly picturesque city’s in the world so make sure you set aside a few days for exploring before you complete your onward journey from Vancouver – be it on a cruise or heading south into the US Pacific Northwest.

Distance on Drive from Toronto to Vancouver:

It is a long journey from Toronto to Vancouver as you will drive the Trans Canada Highway for approximately 4,265 km, passing through 3 provinces. Along the route, you will pass through Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta before reaching your destination of British Columbia. 

Route 1 – Trans Canada Highway

There is only one route from Toronto to Winnipeg, which takes about 22 hours and navigates around the Great Lakes until you reach Manitoba.

Once you reach Winnipeg, you have the choice to take the Northern Route and explore Saskatoon and Edmonton or take the more scenic Southern Route that takes you through Regina, Calgary, and Banff.

Along the scenic Southern Route, you can explore lots of untouched natural areas, visit National and Provincial parks, and enjoy the views of the mountains and lakes.

Route 2 – US Route via I-94 W and I-90 W

An alternative route is to cross the Canada-United States Border to Seattle and then pass across the border again to reach Vancouver. Some key locations to include in your road trip are Detroit, Chicago, Sioux Falls, Rapid City and Billings through Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, Washington, and Seattle. Be prepared that there are tolls on this route. 

How Long Do I Need to Drive from Toronto to Vancouver:

The total trip is about 42 hours of driving time, which ideally should be split up into a minimum of 5 days to avoid fatigue and to enjoy the beautiful Canadian landscapes, natural areas, cities and towns, as well as a variety of fun attractions.

There are so many beautiful places along this Canadian route that you will want to stop and enjoy and visiting attractions is a great way to get out and stretch your legs. 

A good goal is to plan to drive between 5-8 hours a day, depending on the age of your passengers. An important part of this road trip is the destinations between Ontario and British Columbia, not just the final destination.

Best Time of Year to Drive from Toronto to Vancouver:

The most popular time of year to drive across Canada is in the summer, from June to August when the roads are clear and dry. However, this is peak tourist season, so it will be very busy with tourists.

If you have some flexibility, you may enjoy viewing the fall foliage along the Trans-Canada Highway during the early Fall (September to October), or you may enjoy the awakening of nature and wildlife in the Spring (Mid-April to May) due to rapidly changing weather and road conditions you want to avoid driving the Trans-Canada Highway from November until Mid-April.

Best Stops on a Toronto to Vancouver Road Trip:

Day One Toronto to Sault Ste Marie – 700 km (8 Hours Driving Time)

Start your day exploring all the typical Toronto attractions found in our things to do in Toronto guide, and then hit the road to begin your road trip. As you head north from Toronto, you will head towards the beautiful cottage country in the Muskokas.

Muskoka is a great place to enjoy outdoor activities, including hiking, boating, and paddling. If you are looking to enjoy the area by hiking, then check out Limberlost Forest and Wildlife Reserve, Hardy Lake Provincial Park, or the Muskoka Wharf Trail, which offers various difficulties of hiking. Enjoy fishing or water sports on the scenic lakes of Lake Muskoka, Lake Rosseau, and Lake Joseph.

If you’re travelling in the summer, then be sure to check the dates as Muskoka hosts various festivals and events throughout the summer, such as the Gravenhurst Dockside Festival of the Arts, Bracebridge Fire and Ice Festival, and the Muskoka Ribfest.

If you love the outdoors, then you may want to stop and check out all the amazing things to do in Algonquin Park, including lots of wilderness areas and wildlife viewing. On the way to Sault Ste Marie, the largest city you will pass is Sudbury. 

Sudbury has so many cool attractions to visit, including the Big Nickel, which is great for photographs, an interactive science museum called Dynamic Earth, where you can experience underground mining, and lastly, kids will love the hands-on exhibits at Science North.

As you get closer to Sault Ste Marie, you will enjoy the beautiful rugged coastline along Lake Superior, and you can stop to watch the boats pass through the Soo Locks. 

Day Two Sault Ste Marie to Thunder Bay – 700 km (7.5 Hours Driving Time)

Northern Ontario has a vast array of beautiful landscapes, so plan to stop multiple times along the way and take some breathtaking photos. If you have some extra time before leaving Sault Ste Marie, then take the Agawa Canyon Tour and enjoy taking photos of the natural areas in the canyon.

Along this stretch of the drive, you will want to stop at the halfway point of the Trans Canada Highway at Chippewa Falls, which is a famous waterfall that was painted by the famous Canadian painters The Group of Seven.

Continue further and stop at Pancake Bay Provincial Park and enjoy the sandy beach on the shores of Lake Superior. The landscape in the North of Ontario is beautiful including the cliffs of Old Woman Bay.

If you are travelling with kids, you may want to stop at Paddle-to-the-Sea kids’ playground in Nipigon to give the kids a chance to burn some energy.

While it is a detour to the east of Thunder Bay, if you enjoy hiking, the outdoors and spectacular views you can’t miss stopping at Sleeping Giant Provincial Park. Hike to the Top of the Giant Trail and Thunder Bay Lookout and enjoy viewing the geological features and breathtaking views of Lake Superior.

Along this route, there are some unique sculptures, including the Winnie the Pooh sculpture in White River, as well as a museum in the birthplace of this famous children’s character.

On the outskirts of Thunder Bay, you may want to stop to see the famous sculpture of Terry Fox, who was a Canadian hero who ran a Marathon of Hope to raise awareness for cancer.

Day Three Thunder Bay to Winnipeg – 700 km (7.5 Hours Driving Time)

The drive from Thunder Bay to Winnipeg takes you through a scenic portion of northwestern Ontario and southern Manitoba known as the Canadian Shield. A small town along the route that you will want to stop at is Atikokan, which is home to Quetico Provincial Park.

In the park, you can enjoy canoeing on the pristine lakes, hiking rugged terrain, or viewing the scenic railway trestle bridge.

Once you reach Manitoba, enjoy a day at Falcon Lake by spending the afternoon swimming, boating or fishing and then spend the evening viewing the shops and restaurants at Falcon Lake Townsite.

Another cool attraction to visit is the Pinawa Dam, which you can explore as you walk along the dam and learn more about hydroelectric power and how it’s used in Manitoba in the visitor center. Those who enjoy history may want to stop at the Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site to see a fur trading post and learn more about the area’s past fur trading history. 

Day Four Winnipeg to Regina – 572 km (6 Hours Driving Time)

Enjoy the Canadian prairies and all the interesting stops along the way, although there are some long stretches of highway between Winnipeg and Regina, so stock up on snacks before hitting the road.

A major attraction in Winnipeg is Assiniboine Park. Kids will love visiting the zoo, and parents can enjoy the beautiful walking trails and gardens. Another unique stop along the route is the small town of Ste. Agathe has a cool artsy vibe as you can stretch your legs, stroll through town and enjoy the murals that teach about the history of the area.

There is not much to see between these two locations other than the Doll Museum in Brandon, the heritage Swinging Bridge and walking trails in Wolseley. 

Day Five Regina to Calgary – 758 km (7 Hours Driving Time)

Before leaving Regina, head to Sandra Schmirler Leisure Center playground and spray pad if you are travelling with kids. After leaving Regina, one of the first stops you can make on this leg of the trip is the Tunnels of Moose Jaw which is an hour-long tour that gives you insight into the prohibition era in Canada.

The Tunnels of Moosejaw has three different guided theatrical tours to choose from including Chicago Connection, Bunker 24 and the Passage to Fortune.

A few other great stops before leaving Saskatchewan include the interpretive nature trails at Chaplin Nature Centre, the historic museum in Swift Current and the sand dunes at Great Sandhills Ecological Reserve.

As you enter Alberta and head towards Calgary, there are a few stops along the way that you will want to make, including the Medalta in the Historic Clay District, which is a ceramics factory, the interpretive trail at the Brooks Aqueduct, and the tranquil Japanese gardens in Lethbridge at Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden.

Day Six: Calgary to Revelstoke – 408 km (4.5 Hours Driving Time)

The best part of this entire drive is this section of the trip that takes you from Banff to Calgary, as the landscape is one of a kind, featuring the natural beauty of mountains, wildlife, historical sites and clear turquoise lakes.

If you or the kids are not in the mood for hiking, consider riding the Banff Gondola to the upper boardwalk, where you can enjoy the fantastic vistas of Banff town and the nearby mountains.

There is so much to do in Banff with kids, including Upper Banff hot springs, Johnston Canyon hike, Johnson Lake hike, Bow Falls, and Cave & Basin National Historic Site. At the summit, you’ll discover a restaurant offering delightful food and beverage choices. If you are looking for some quiet lakes to visit then checkout Peyto Lake and Lake Minnewanka.

Some stops you will want to make as you travel through the Canadian Rockies include Lake Louise, Emerald Lake and the Spiral Tunnels at Yoho National Park, as well as Glacier National Park. All of these stops offer scenic views, hiking trails, and lots of opportunities for outdoor exploration.

If you enjoy history you may want to stop at the Rogers Pass National Historic Site to see the exhibits that explain the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway and its impact on Canada before stopping in at Revelstoke for the night.

Day Seven: Revelstoke to Vancouver – 565 km (6.5 Hours Driving Time)

Revelstoke has rugged mountain summits, tumbling waterfalls, picturesque lakes, and lush cedar woodlands. It offers numerous exciting, family-friendly adventure opportunities to explore. 

Revelstoke is a small town with a thriving outdoor tourism scene, as you can enjoy hiking and biking some of the popular trails, including Mount Revelstoke Summit Trail, Eva Lake Trail, and the Frisby Ridge Trail for biking. 

Make sure if you’re travelling with kids to check out the two different mountain coasters at Mount Revelstoke. While Vancouver Island may appear small on a map, it is actually the largest Pacific Island outside of New Zealand and has so much to explore!

Vancouver Island is located 60 miles west of Downtown Vancouver and can easily be combined with visiting Vancouver in a Day if you have a little extra time for your vacation.

Some of the major areas you must visit on a Vancouver Island Vacation are Campbell River, Tofino, Port Hardy, Port Alberni, Elk Falls Provincial Park, East Sooke Regional Park, and Butchart Gardens.

Vancouver Island, once seen as a retirement location, has diversified its appeal to a much younger crowd due to its milder climate, upcoming art and food scene, and a University.

Vancouver Island is becoming a foodie paradise and offers some of the freshest seafood from the Pacific (oysters, crab, fish and chips), as well as Asian-inspired influenced food (sushi). But don’t worry; they still have Canadian staples like poutine (cheese curds, gravy, and fries), bacon, and Canadian beavertails (dessert pastry).

How To Get To Vancouver Island

Vancouver has multiple transportation options, including ferry, plane, seaplane, bus, or car. You will want to consider factors such as time, cost, schedules, availability, and convenience when choosing how to reach Vancouver Island.

Vancouver Island By Ferry

BC Ferries operates multiple routes from Vancouver to Vancouver Island.  The most popular route is from Tsawwassen (near Vancouver) to Swartz Bay (near Victoria). This ferry journey takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours.

You can also take the ferries from Horseshoe Bay (near Vancouver) to Departure Bay in Nanaimo and from Tsawwassen to Duke Point in Nanaimo. You can find some great package deals for accommodations and the ferry on the BC Ferries Website.

If traveling from Washington State, USA: You can take The Washington State Ferries seasonal service from Anacortes, Washington, to Sidney (near Victoria) on Vancouver Island. The crossing time is around 2 to 3 hours.

Vancouver Island By Road

Car: If you are already in the Vancouver area you can simply take the Tsawwassen ferry to Swartz Bay or take the Ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo.

Bus: Several bus companies offer services from Vancouver and other mainland cities to various destinations on Vancouver Island and include a ride on the ferry in the bus fare cost.

Vancouver Island By Plane:

Vancouver Island has three small airports, including Victoria International Airport (the biggest of the three), which offers international and domestic flights. Nanaimo and Comox Valley Airports only have domestic flights.

If you have money to spare, you can also consider chartering a seaplane that has multiple locations to land on Vancouver Island.

Vancouver Island By Foot

Vancouver Island is one of the easiest places to travel without a car as it offers multiple bus routes once you arrive on the island. BC Ferries offers low rates for passengers starting at $18.50 each way for adults and $9.25 for children under 11 years old (2023).

Getting Around Vancouver Island

The inner harbor of Victoria can easily be explored on foot or by renting a bicycle due to its compact size. Victoria has more cycling routes than any other Canadian City, and you can easily explore the main areas of Victoria, nearby beaches, and even bike to nearby attractions like Butchart Gardens.

If you are looking to see more of the island than just Victoria, you will want to either rent a car in Vancouver and drive it across on the ferry, or rent a car at Victoria International Airport.

You should note, however, that parking rates at hotels on the island are very high. If you are looking for accommodations and a vehicle then consider renting an RV from JustGo Camper Van Rentals or Far Out Wilderness. 

You can also take the Island Link Bus that connects foot passengers at the following four terminals: Departure Bay, Little River, Buckley Bay, and Campbell River, to provide connecting bus transportation between there and the Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal.

Here’s an overview of what the different seasons are like on Vancouver Island:

Summer (June to August): This is the peak tourist season as the weather is warm and ideal for outdoor activities like visiting the beach, hiking, water sports such as kayaking and surfing, and wildlife viewing. You will need to book accommodations and activities far ahead of time if you visit during peak season.

Fall (September to November): Vancouver Island offers beautiful autumn foliage, which is perfect for a scenic drive and hiking. However, as the weather becomes cooler, there are fewer outdoor activities offered. Spring (March to May): Spring on Vancouver Island is a time of warmer temperatures, a return of wildlife, and blooming flowers. How Many Days Do You Need

The distance from around Vancouver Island is approximately 290 miles from North to South (466 kilometres). To complete a full loop of Vancouver Island along Highway 19 (the main highway that circles the Island) known as the Island Highway, will take approximately 9-10 hours without stopping for any sights.

Driving around Vancouver Island can take longer depending on traffic and road conditions but estimates driving from Victoria to Port Hardy (northernmost point), then returning to Victoria.

Most travellers choose to take a more relaxed itinerary and take their time and spend up to 7 days enjoying the journey and all the attractions and scenic spots that the island has to offer.

Roadtrippers should plan their trip based on interests and activities they want to visit, allowing extra time in between to explore hidden gems and unplanned stops to enjoy the natural beauty of the island truly. If you have extra days to spare, there are lots of wildlife viewing opportunities on Vancouver Island that you can’t find anywhere else.

Day Trip to Vancouver Island

To determine how much you can see in just one day, knowing the distances will help you plan your itinerary of attractions and accommodations. The island is 500 km long and 100 km wide, so seeing it all in one day is impossible.

However, visiting Victoria is a great day trip option from Vancouver. When planning your stops, consider 3-4 hours of the day will be lost to transportation between Vancouver and Victoria.

If you only have one day, you will want to explore the following attractions in Victoria:

Start the day by grabbing breakfast at Crust Bakery in Victoria. They open at 8 am and serve lots of breakfast options, coffee, tea, and baked goods.

Explore Victoria Old Town

Victoria is very walkable, so you can explore the downtown core and check out the cool architectural buildings, and you may even choose to take a free guided tour of the British Columbia Parliament buildings.

Victoria Old Town has three districts that have unique buildings to check out: China Town, the old commercial district, and the Inner Harbor, which has buildings from the gold rush and is located along the waterfront.

Join a walking tour or explore on your own, but grab a free map outlining all the historic buildings from the visitor center.

Enjoy High Tea at The Empress Hotel

If you enjoy tea and have time, you may partake in High Tea at the Fairmont Empress Hotel, a historic icon of Victoria that serves over 21 different teas in its Lobby Lounge. The tea is accompanied by scones that are made with locally sourced ingredients such as strawberry jam and lavender.

Interestingly, The Empress serves more tea in the summer than most hotels in London, England, so make sure you make a reservation ahead of time.

Visit Beacon Hill Park

Kids will enjoy Beacon Hill Park as it has a petting zoo and two different playgrounds. Beacon Hill Park has multiple hiking trails and gardens to walk, beautiful views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and is home to the world’s tallest free-standing Totem pole.

Fisherman’s Wharf

Check out the floating restaurants, unique shops, and beautiful houseboats in this unique and fun neighbourhood located 10 minutes from Victoria.

Sunset in the Inner Harbour

Finish off the day by enjoying the Sunset at a location within the Inner Harbour before heading back on the ferry to Vancouver. You can either choose a waterfront cafe or a grassy spot on the lawn of the Parliament buildings, which would be great for a dinner picnic.

You will need so much longer than a day to scratch the surface when it comes to exploring Vancouver Island. So it’s time to grab some wheels and set off for a week exploring the best of Vancouver Island, BC.

Day 1 – Victoria

Day 2 – Cowichan Valley

Day 3 – Nanaimo

Day 4 – Tofino

If you’re looking for a shorter itinerary and travelling with kids, you will want a mix of educational, outdoor, and indoor activities. Here’s our suggested 3-4 day Vancouver Island itinerary.

Some highlights that kids will enjoy on Vancouver Island are The Royal BC Museum, walking the Fisherman’s Wharf in Victoria, shopping for souvenirs and ice cream on Government Street, visiting Beacon Hill, and exploring Miniature World, which has a variety of miniature displays which are all located in Victoria.

On Day 2, drive 2 hours from Victoria to Parksville and explore the North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre to see local animals like eagles, owls, and bears in a rehabilitation facility. Then spend the afternoon at Rathtrevor Beach and enjoy the shallow waters and sandy beach as kids enjoy the tide pools.

Once you’re tired of the beach, head to the Butterfly World and Gardens, allowing parents to relax in peaceful gardens while kids get up close with butterflies.

On Day 3, explore the town of Tofino and enjoy the sandy beaches and tide pools at Chesterman Beach or Long Beach. If you’re looking to try out beginner surfing lessons on gentle waves, then you want to visit Cox Bay. If you like adventure and water, you will want to visit the H20 Adventure and Fitness Centre in Kelowna or Wibit Water Park in Penticton, as these parks feature waterslides, splash pads, and interactive play areas that will keep kids cool and having fun! 

If you like swimming but don’t enjoy water parks, you can spend the day at the beach swimming and building sandcastles. The Okanagan is known for its beautiful sandy beaches. Some family-friendly beaches to check out include Rotary Beach in Kelowna and Skaha Lake Beach in Penticton.

Distance from Vancouver: 64 km via Highway 99 (1 hour)

This remarkable Canadian City is located alongside the picturesque Howe Sound, a stunning fjord, and snow-capped mountains. It’s the perfect escape to enjoy outdoor adventure and a perfect midway stop if you continue onto Whistler.

Squamish offers an ideal location for a weekend outdoor adventure, and one of the must-do activities with kids is riding the Sea to Sky Gondola. The gondola ride takes approximately 10 minutes, and as you ascend, the views become increasingly beautiful and scenic.

Upon reaching the mountaintop, a short walk will lead you to a suspension bridge, providing another breathtaking vantage point of the mountains and the stunning waters below, including Shannon Falls, the third-largest waterfall in British Columbia. If you plan to hike or have a leisurely lunch, it is advisable to allocate at least 3 hours for this stop.

If visiting the downtown area by car, we would choose a local parking lot and park for the day and then use other modes of transit as they are more convenient.

Stanley Park

Stanley Park is the best park in Vancouver and has so many unique activities for kids and the whole family to enjoy. You can easily spend the entire day here, so why not pack a picnic lunch? Kids will love riding a miniature train that weaves around the park showcasing the natural beauty of Stanley Park.

For nature enthusiasts, you will want to stop by the Lost Lagoon Nature House to learn more about the park’s wildlife and ecosystem.

Stanley Park has a rich history and is home to an impressive collection of Totem poles near Brockton Point in Stanley Park which is easy to find and accessible. While visiting the totem poles, you can learn more about how the totems represent the traditional art and storytelling of Indigenous cultures from various Indigenous Communities in the Northwest.

How Long Do I Need For The Vancouver To San Francisco Road Trip?

The distance from Vancouver to San Francisco is approximately 800 miles (1,285 kilometers) if taking the inland route on I-5. The journey takes about 16 hours of driving time, depending on how often you stop along the way and if you encounter any traffic. Be prepared that this route does include some tolls.

This drive is best split into 3 days of driving with 5 hours each day. This way, you can have plenty of time to explore lots of unique attractions along the route.

An alternate option is taking the longer coastal route on 101/Highway 1, allowing you to explore Olympic National Park, Oregon Coast, and the Redwoods.

1. A valid passport or other acceptable travel documents.
2. A visa: If you are a Canadian citizen, you generally do not need a visa to enter the United States for tourism or business purposes for stays up to 180 days. 
3. Proof of vehicle registration and insurance: You may be asked to provide documentation
4. Answer Questions: Border Patrol will ask a few questions about your trip, such as where you’re going, how long you plan to stay, and what you will be doing while in the United States. It is important to answer these questions truthfully and provide any necessary documentation to support your answers.

If you wish to hire a car (rent), your best option is to take a bus from Vancouver to Seattle, of the Amtrak Cascades, and then get a car from there instead of dealing with the hassles of cross-border car rentals.

Seattle, WA

Olympic National Park, WA

The national park has a rich history as it is home to several indigenous communities and contains multiple historic sites, all while offering beautiful scenic views of Washington’s Olympic Peninsula and is one of the most northern located national parks in the United States.

Olympic National Park is home to over 1,400 miles of diverse ecosystems, including the vibrant and lush Hoh Rain Forest, which has beautiful, unique flora and fauna views in this thriving moist environment.

Another unique area of the park is the mountainous area of Hurricane Ridge which offers panoramic views of glacier-capped mountains and the entire Olympic Mountain Range – this makes for a beautiful hike. 

Don’t forget to visit the old-growth forests or the rocky Beaches at Ruby Beach and Rialto Beach that allow visitors to stroll along the beach, search for creatures in tide pools, and simply just listen to the waves crashing against the rocks.

Willapa National Wildlife Refuge

Visitors will enjoy viewing the diverse range of habitats, including tidal marshes, sand dunes, and old forests that are home to over 250 species of migrating birds, fish, and numerous animals, including bears, otters, and Elk. Kids will enjoy learning more about the history, ecology, and wildlife through educational programs and exhibits in the visitor center.

Located in Washington State, the goal of this wildlife refuge is to conserve habitats for the species located in the park. Willapa National Wildlife Refuge is over 16,000 acres in size and offers visitors a variety of recreation opportunities. While visiting the Wildlife Refuge you can enjoy wildlife sightings, bird watching, hiking, or fishing while enjoying the natural beauty of the area.

The Willapa National Wildlife Refuge property has several cultural and historic sites, including a World War II-era radar station and a historic lighthouse that dates back to 1858. Guided tours of the lighthouse are available during the summer months.

Long Beach

Plan to spend the day and enjoy the long stretches of sandy beaches that Long Beach has to offer to visitors. Located on the western edge of the Olympic Peninsula, Long Beach has fantastic swimming, sunbathing, and kite flying and even has many local stores to purchase kites.  This family-friendly destination has beaches, outdoor activities, museums, and much more to entertain the whole family.

Long Beach holds a yearly kite festival in August and is home to the World Kite Museum. The area is also popular for clam digging, especially if you’re looking for the famous razor clam.

Located nearby are several state parks, such as Cape Disappointment State Park and Lewis and Clark National Historical Park, which offer scenic views along hiking trails while learning about the area’s rich history.

Coos Bay

Located on the southern coast of Oregon, Coos Bay is a must-see spot for Pacific Northwest visitors as it offers many adventurous activities. You can learn more about the history and culture by visiting the Coos Historical and Maritime Museum, which explains the history of indigenous heritage and the past of fishing and timber industries in the area.

Siuslaw National Forest

This vast area is home to a variety of wildlife and features the highest peak in the Oregon Coast Range, Mary’s Peak, which stands at 4097 feet (1249 meters). This is a prominent feature in the Siuslaw National Forest, offering panoramic views of forest, mountains, and coastlines. 

Mary’s Peak has a variety of different trails for visitors to explore, from easy to advanced, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the view. At the summit of Mary’s Peak, there is a restroom, observation tower, and picnic tables allowing guests to take a rest and refuel for the trip back down.

Redwood National & State Parks, OR, WA

This is a must-see destination for nature lovers or those looking to enjoy the peaceful, quiet environment of the iconic redwood forest, home to some of the world’s tallest trees. Redwood National & State Parks is located on the north coast of California, has trees as large as 380 feet tall, and covers an area of almost 140,000 acres.

Visitors to the park will enjoy viewing wildlife, hiking through the forest, camping, and fishing.  Kids will enjoy checking out the Junior Ranger programs, campfire talks, and guided hikes offered by the visitor center.

3. Calgary to Jasper – Alberta

Time to Explore: 1-2 days

4. Sea to Sky Highway – British Columbia

Time to Explore: 1 Day, 2 hours of drive time

The Sea to Sky (Highway 99) runs from Vancouver to Whistler and takes you along the water of the Howe Sound, which is a fjord to the snowy mountain tops of Whistler.

The Sea to Sky Highway has a deeply rooted connection to First Nations culture, and history, as the land is the ancestral territory of the Squamish (Skwxwú7mesh) and Lil’wat First Nations.

Start your road trip at Whytecliff Park and head to the coastline to view the beautiful Howe Sound, or check out the trails for incredible views of the surrounding area. Or, if you choose to skip Whytecliff Park, then stop at Porteau Cove, which is a small provincial park with a beautiful day-use area surrounded by mountains.

Kids may enjoy a stop to learn more about the history of the area at the interactive mining museum, where you get to immerse yourself in the experience as you wear a hard hat and head down into an old mine by train.

As you get closer to Squamish, you will want to stop at Mount Garibaldi, which is a dormant volcano, or check out the 335-m-tall Shannon Falls, which are 3rd largest in British Columbia.

Lastly, you won’t want to miss out on the Sea to Sky Gondola that carries you past granite cliffs to the top of the track, where you can view the Howe Sound below. At the top, you will find a kid-friendly flat 1.6 km trail with viewing platforms and a suspension bridge.

For those who prefer a challenge and adventure, you can save money and climb up the mountain trail that climbs 900 meters and is 7 kilometers long. This trail takes about 3.5 hours, and you can take the gondola on the return for a reduced price.

5. Fundy Coastline – New Brunswick

Time to Explore: 3-5 Days

The Fundy Coastline is home to beautiful coastlines,  the world’s highest tides, and quaint fishing communities. Enjoy visiting the unique coastline and fishing villages that have been created by the sea. This natural tour will show you Atlantic Wildlife, Outdoor adventures, and amazing food like Atlantic fish and Chips or a Lobster Roll fresh from the Sea.

Your first stop has to be to visit the low and high tides of Hopewell Rocks, as it is a sight to see! Walk on the ocean floor around giant sea stacks, then take out a kayak as the water rises up to 4 ft, and you can explore the sea stacks.

Check out the small fishing community of Alma, which has a few shops and great restaurants that have amazing patios on the water, and you can check out local fishing boats. Not too far from here is Fundy National Park, where you can spend the entire day exploring beautiful lush trails of varying difficulties and even stop to relax in the famous red Muskoka chairs.

Continue along the Fundy trail parkway to check out the beaches, lookout points, waterfalls, and observation decks of North America’s Eastern Seaboard as you head to Saint John’s.

6. Eastern Townships – Quebec

The Eastern Townships have three different routes that highlight the hidden gems of Quebec: The Wine Trail, Townships Trail, and Summit Drive.

The Wine Trail is a 25 kilometer route that features 22 different wineries that offer unique picnic spots for lunch, as well as wine tastings. In the fall, some wineries even encourage tourists to help harvest the grapes and stomp on them to start the process of making wine.

Townships Trail is a 430-kilometer route for history lovers and focuses on the history of Quebec and its American and British Roots. Learn about the first inhabitants of Quebec and how they settled the land as you visit 31 villages that have many interpretive sites, museums, and historic locations to explore.

Summit Drive is a 193-kilometer route for outdoor enthusiasts as you stop in little villages surrounded by lakes and rolling mountains. This area is known for being part of the International Dark Sky Reserve, offering breathtaking views of the stars.

7. Journey to Churchill – Manitoba

Time to Explore: 2-3 Days

Take Highway 6 along the shores of Lake Manitoba as you head through multiple land treaty zones on your way towards Hudson Bay and Churchill – the Polar bear capital. Stop in Lundar to check out the marshlands that are home to ducks, songbirds, and pelicans at Lundar Beach Provincial Park.

Along the route, you want to stop at check out the most photographed area in Manitoba – Steep Rock. Unique limestone rock formations overlook the lake and make for great lookout points.

If you are looking for adventure off the beaten path, then check out the boreal wilderness of Paint Lake, which is the largest lake in Manitoba, and offers secluded beaches and beautiful hiking trails such as Coffee Cove Hiking Trail.

For a quick leg stretch, check out Pisew Falls, where you can hear the roar of the water from the parking lot, and it is a quick jaunt on the boardwalk to two viewing platforms. Once you reach the falls, you can walk another 500m to a bridge to check out the nearby rapids.

You want to visit between July and November when thousands of polar bears migrate and make Churchill their summer home. Churchill can only be visited by train, but the scenery is breathtaking to watch all the natural wildlife and take in the boreal terrain of the sub-arctic wilderness.

8. Prince Edward Island Coastal Drives – Prince Edward Island

The beautiful province of Prince Edward Island offers road trip views of farmland, churches, fishing communities, and iconic landmarks on all three amazing coastal road trip options. Each road trip features unique cities and boardwalk areas to explore.

North Cape Coastal features 350 kilometers of breathtaking views and is inspired by the arts as homes are made from bottles and are very decorative.

The region has a deep Acadian history, so you can learn more about the Acadian culture through their food and music while smelling the fresh salt air and enjoying fresh Malpeque oysters at one of the many restaurants.

Central Coastal is 253 kilometers and is best known for being home to Anne of Green Gables and having beautiful red cliffs and white sand beaches.

The Central Coastal Drive begins at the Confederation Bridge and takes you to Chelton Beach, where you can enjoy a swim. Along the drive, you will pass rich farmland and gorgeous lighthouses on your way to Anne at Green Gables Heritage Place or continue on to explore the historic buildings in Charlottetown.

If you enjoy spending time at the beach then check out the Points East Coastal drive that passes by over 50 different beaches on the coastline. This route is 475 kilometers and explores the famous red cliffs of PEI, fishing communities, beaches, and harbors. Discover small-town culture by visiting local restaurants and artisan shops.

9. Badlands Parkway – Saskatchewan

Time to Explore: 1 day

Explore the pristinely preserved grasslands in Grasslands National Park, which have been divided into two sections, East and West. In the West, you can visit the Frenchman River Valley and, if you are lucky, see one of many endangered species, while the East is an area rich in fossils. Stop at the visitor center in Val Marie and decide if you want to road trip the East or the West.

The West section is an 80 km loop where you will likely see prairie dogs, burrowing owls, wild bison, old ranching sites, as well as cool archaeological sites. In the East, is a much shorter 11km route that is one of the most scenic drives in Canada that will take you through the richest fossil sites for finding dinosaur fossils.

Pro Tip: These routes are only available during daylight hours and are very remote, so come prepared with food and water and fill up your tank before you arrive.

10. Viking Trail and Gros Morne National Park – Newfoundland

Time to Explore: 1-2 days

Newfoundland is the most easterly province, and while it is small in size, it is actually quite vast! Newfoundland is known as the “Rock” for its mountains, beautiful scenery, breathtaking outdoors, and unique Canadian wildlife, all of which can be viewed as you drive the Viking Trail.

The Viking Trail runs along the northern peninsula of Newfoundland and can be driven in 5 hours. However, taking at least a day to explore is a much better experience rather than rushing the road trip.

The Viking trail should be on your bucket list as this road trip will take you through scenic coastline communities, historical sites, St. Anthony’s and L’anse aux Meadows, and majestic Gros Morne.

St. Anthony’s is a small community located in Iceberg Alley, as you can see multiple icebergs off the coastline even in the summer months. Kids will love seeing icebergs up close by boat or kayak and learning more about the Canadian arctic. If you’re lucky, you may even see some whales and seabirds.

L’anse aux Meadows is home to the Vikings and is the only confirmed place of Norse settlement in North America. Kids will enjoy checking out the replica Viking Boat, 3D Viking camp model, dressing up as Vikings, and listening to stories about Norse characters like Thor and Noki.

Gros Morne is the second largest national park in all of Atlantic Canada and is full of beautiful wildlife, including bears, foxes, moose, and caribou. The park has several hiking trails to meet the experience levels of all hikers.

The route We will be explaining in detail is a 14-day road trip stopping in Squamish, Whistler, Kamloops, Revelstoke, Jasper National Park, Yoho National Park, Lake Louise, and Banff National Park.

An alternate route option is that you can shorten the road trip down to seven days and focus on just visiting Whistler in British Columbia and spending the rest of your time in Alberta exploring the Canadian Rockies: Lake Louise, Yoho National Park, and Banff National Park.

However, before arriving in Whistler, you will want to stop in Squamish, one of the best Canadian cities for outdoor adventures and the halfway point between Vancouver and Whistler. 

Squamish is a great location for a half-day adventure, and the Sea to Sky Gondola is a must-do activity with kids. The gondola is about a 10-minute ride, and the views become more and more impressive as you get higher.

Once at the top, you will enjoy a short walk to a suspension bridge that leads to another amazing viewpoint of the mountains and gorgeous waters below, including Shannon Falls, the third-largest waterfall in British Columbia.

If you plan to enjoy a hike or stay for lunch, you will need at least 3 hours for this stop.

Whistler

The alpine village of Whistler is located just 45 minutes from Squamish. We would start exploring the Downtown area and checking out the unique shops, and cafes. You may choose to explore the Peak to Peak Gondola at Whistler, which is similar to the Sky to Sky in Squamish. 

Kamloops

Depending on the age of your children, Kamloops may be a great place to stop for the night as it is 4 hours from Vancouver and about 5.5 hours from Banff. Kamloops is a great stop for a quick visit  with kids as they have multiple great playgrounds and parks that offer cheap entertainment including:

Big Little Science Centre -> This is a small educational center dedicated to science that offers hands-on exploration activities and offers a variety of short science shows. This is a very affordable excursion as the entrance for a family costs under $20.

If you want to push your drive a little further, then you can continue onto Revelstoke, which is about 6.5 hours from Vancouver but puts you closer to Jasper the next day as your drive would be about 5 hours to Jasper National Park.

Revelstoke

The mountain scenery in Revelstoke offers a glimpse of the spectacular views you will continue to see as you head toward Banff. Revelstoke is home to jagged mountain peaks, cascading waterfalls, beautiful lakes, and dense cedar forests. Revelstoke is home to some great adventure activities for families to explore and enjoy.

Want to enjoy the water? We highly recommend becoming a River Pirate and experiencing a pirate adventure on the Columbia River with Wild Blue Yonder Rafting Adventures where you will experience pirate stories, and sing-along-song, all while floating down the river and taking in views of the wildlife. Kids will love the opportunity to play with foam swords.

One last amazing stop is the Enchanted Forest, where you can visit British Columbia’s tallest treehouse or explore a large cedar stump house.

Jasper National Park

One of the most popular attractions is the Columbia Icefields SkyWalk which is a glass floor walkway that comes out from the cliff’s edge. This 1km walkway allows you to view waterfalls, and wildlife while listening to a guided tour.

Pro Tip: Switch Drivers halfway if you can to allow each driver to truly experience and view the landscape. 

Yoho National Park

Yoho offers beauty and solitude and is slightly quieter than some of the other national parks that are easier to access and closer to Calgary. Canoeing in the park offers views of the mountains that look picture-perfect like a postcard.

If you have older kids and like a little bit more adventure, then you might want to try Kicking Horse River Rafting with a trained guide as you overcome the challenges of the river. Local Rafting Companies offer half-day and full-day tour options.

Find one of the most common symbols of Canada (red Adirondack chairs) located in two different locations within Yoho National Park, offering a place to rest and enjoy the views.

The chairs in Yoho National Park are located at Takakkaw Falls and Yoho Lake and are only 4 of the over 200 chairs that have been located across Canada to encourage tourists to explore our country and take in the magnificent landscape that Canada has from the West to East Coast.

Pro Tip: If you are planning on spending more than 7 days in Canadian National Parks, then we highly suggest purchasing a yearly pass as it works out to be more cost-effective. 

Lake Louise

Enjoy the beauty of water at Lake Louise as you enjoy a family paddle with a mountain backdrop.

The Lake Louise Boathouse rents canoes for an hourly rate of $ 145 CAD an hour, and they can hold a maximum of 3 adults of 2 adults and 2 children that weigh less than 55 pounds. Otherwise, you will need to divide them into 2 canoes. Kayaks are also available for rental.

Banff National Park

You have reached your final destination of Banff National Park – an outdoor adventurer’s dream location, as the landscape features the natural beauty of mountains, wildlife, historical sites, and clear turquoise lakes.

Dating back to 1885, Banff National Park was discovered and created after railway workers found multiple natural springs, although the history of the park dates back even further as Indigenous communities took care of the land for centuries.

Be sure to start your day off early by visiting the bucket list destination of Moraine Lake first, as the parking can be full by as early as 7 AM during peak season.

Moraine Lake is a glacial-fed lake in the Valley of Ten Peaks and has an elevation of almost 1900 meters. Take the Lakeshore Trail, which is flat and kid-friendly, and weave you through the forested shoreline to the Lake, where you can sit on the rocky edge and simply take in the magnificent view.
