Honey Pot Hill Orchards is one of Stow’s largest attractions for families, and it’s a great place to spend an afternoon picking apples, snacking on delicious cider donuts from the farm store, and visiting the animals.

You can also visit Carver Hill Orchard, Derby Ridge Farm, and Shelburne Farms. Each one has something different to offer.

You can also visit the American Heritage Museum, which has an extensive collection of antique planes, cars, and World War II tanks. It takes roughly two hours to take in the entire museum experience, so plan your time accordingly. Children will love the immersive exhibits, and you can even see a Revolutionary War Re-enactment during the museum’s Summer Living History Weekends. How exciting!

Before heading home, satisfy your hunger with a plate of mouthwatering authentic Italian fare at Trattoria Amalfi at the Nettle’s Plaza. Both of the restaurant’s owners were born and raised in Italy, and they’ve created a Mediterranean paradise in the heart of Stow.

Providence, Rhode Island

Distance from Boston: 50.9 miles ~ via I-93 S and I-95 S (54 minutes)

Less than an hour from Boston, Providence perfectly combines small-town charm and big-city culture. Whether you’re searching for things to do outside of Boston with family or friends, you won’t be disappointed with everything Providence offers.

Enjoy an authentic Venetian experience, New England-style, by going on a gondola ride along the Providence Riverwalk. Providence’s gondolas are believed to be the first authentic Venetian gondolas ever built on American soil, and they’re a sight to behold.

Are you looking for additional sightseeing opportunities on the water? Then you must check out WaterFire, a series of almost 100 bonfires spread out over Providence’s three rivers.

Distance from Boston: 40.5 miles ~ via I-93 S and MA-3 S (54 minutes)

What if we told you that an hour’s drive could transport you back in time to the 17th century? Well, it’s almost true! Plimoth Plantation is one of the best day trips in Massachusetts because you can spend an entire day totally immersed in America’s history.

Visit Historic Patuxet to learn more about Wampanoag communities and their way of life in the 17th century. You can visit a wetu (house), observe staff building a canoe, and more. Modern interpreters guide you through the site and provide fascinating insight, and you can usually experience Patuxet in about an hour.

Experience a typical day in the life of a Plymouth Colonist when you visit the 17th-Century English Village. Explore timber-framed houses, gardens, and spend time chatting with inhabitants of the colony. Top Tip: Since Plimoth Patuxet and Plimoth Grist Mill are about three miles apart, it’s wise to drive the distance instead of walking. It’s wise to wear comfortable clothes and tennis shoes, as you will be walking a great deal.

Portsmouth, New Hampshire

Distance from Boston: 61.6 miles ~ via I-95 N (59 minutes)

Portsmouth is located just an hour north of Boston and is one of our favorite Massachusetts day trips. It’s filled to the brim with unique shops, historical locations, and delicious restaurants, making it an excellent option for the whole family.

Portsmouth beaches are a cut above the rest, having been ranked in the top five cleanest beaches in the country. Build sandcastles, stroll along the shore, splash in the waves, or soak up the sun. There are many beautiful beaches and parks to explore.

Take in Portsmouth’s historic culture and contemporary visual arts scene with a professional theater show or a trip to the Museum of New Art. Then, immerse yourself in the town’s history with a visit to the Strawbery Banke Museum, a 10-acre outdoor history museum that’s truly a sight to behold.

Mystic might be our list’s longest day trip from Boston, but it’s well worth the journey! This picturesque Connecticut seaside village was once a thriving shipbuilding port. Today it’s a popular tourist destination for anyone who wants to get off the beaten path and enjoy some small-town New England charm.

Mystic has many diverse shopping opportunities, so take a stroll downtown and visit Mystic Knotwork, where they hand-tie bracelets, wreaths, and much more. If you like swimming but don’t enjoy water parks, you can spend the day at the beach swimming and building sandcastles. The Okanagan is known for its beautiful sandy beaches. Some family-friendly beaches to check out include Rotary Beach in Kelowna and Skaha Lake Beach in Penticton.

Squamish, BC

Distance from Vancouver: 64 km via Highway 99 (1 hour)

This remarkable Canadian City is located alongside the picturesque Howe Sound, a stunning fjord, and snow-capped mountains. It’s the perfect escape to enjoy outdoor adventure and a perfect midway stop if you continue onto Whistler.

Squamish offers an ideal location for a weekend outdoor adventure, and one of the must-do activities with kids is riding the Sea to Sky Gondola. The gondola ride takes approximately 10 minutes, and as you ascend, the views become increasingly beautiful and scenic.

Upon reaching the mountaintop, a short walk will lead you to a suspension bridge, providing another breathtaking vantage point of the mountains and the stunning waters below, including Shannon Falls, the third-largest waterfall in British Columbia. If you plan to hike or have a leisurely lunch, it is advisable to allocate at least 3 hours for this stop.

If you want to learn more about the area’s history, check out the Britannia Mine Museum. There, you can enjoy an underground train ride, gold panning activities, and a presentation on the region’s mining history. Distance from Vancouver: 283 km via Highway 4 (5 hours and 20 minutes)

Tofino is located on the edge of Vancouver Island and is the ideal location to enjoy the Pacific Ocean, relaxation, and natural spaces. Tourists enjoy visiting the forested areas, mountains, and beaches all in one trip.

Anchorage is a great place to base yourself if you want to explore some of the best Alaska has to offer but don’t necessarily want to give up amenities. 

Thanks to its ideal location, Alaska’s most populated city offers plenty of options when it comes to incredible day trips. Be it a small town filled with heritage to some of the best state and national parks in the Frontier State, options abound for places you can easily explore in just a day. 

If you’re looking for great spots to explore in Alaska that are close to the city, here is a list of some of the best day trips from Anchorage. 

Incredible Day Trips From Anchorage 

1. Spencer Glacier 

Spencer Glacier is one of the most striking glaciers in Alaska. Set inside the alluring Chugach National Forest, this colossal glacier rises from a lake dotted by icebergs, creating a landscape that looks out of this world. 

Aside from getting to see the glacier itself, the way there is also an absolute treat. The only way to reach Spencer Glacier is by hopping on the Glacier Discovery Train, a short but incredibly exciting ride that provides some insanely scenic views of Alaska.  

2. Talkeetna 

Set on the way from Anchorage to Denali National Park, Talkeetna is a charming little town that provides visitors the unique opportunity to blend in a day filled with culture and Alaskan nature. 

Here, you’ll find a quaint downtown area dotted with historical buildings, charming coffee shops, plenty of cozy restaurants, breweries local art galleries, and old-school saloons. During your visit, make sure not to miss out on touring the Denali Brewing Company, where you’ll get to taste and learn all about Alaska’s favorite craft beer. 

Something else that makes Talkeetna wonderful is that thanks to its location close to Denali National Park, its gorgeous downtown is towered by Denali, the highest mountain in the United States! 

Another favorite activity for visitors is joining a Talkeetna Sled Dog Kennel Tour, where you’ll get to meet the dog athletes that partake in dog mushing races, a sport unique to the Frontier State. 

3. Kenai Fjords National Park 

Set just over a hundred miles away from Anchorage, Kenai Fjords National Park is one of Alaska’s most iconic places and a pretty easy day trip from Anchorage. 

Kenai Fjords is an incredible glacial park that encompasses over 600,000 acres of icy landscapes. Aside from gawking at the glaciers in the park, Kenai Fjords is also a wonderful place to spot Alaskan wildlife, including whales, orcas, seals, puffins, and more. 

A few of the best things to do at Kenai Fjords include hiking the Exit Glacier Trail to Glacier Overlook for the best views, kayaking or boating around the glacier, and taking a cruise around the area to observe marine life from a close distance. 

4. Girdwood 

If high-end dining and skiing are your jam, Girdwood is one of the best day trips from Anchorage. 

Girdwood is home to a popular ski resort, making it a go-to for skiing during the winter months. If you’re visiting Alaska during the summer, though, you’ll also find plenty on the menu. Some of the best things to do in Girdwood aside from skiing include riding the town’s tram for gorgeous views of the valley, hiking in the forest, and touring the Crow Creek Mine’s historical buildings (you can also go on a scavenger hunt for leftover gold!) 

5. Lake Clark National Park and Preserve 

If you want to visit a place that is lesser known to tourists, Lake Clark National Park and Preserve is a great option. 

This rather unknown national park sees less than 20,000 visitors every year, making it a perfect destination to enjoy the Alaskan wilderness in solitude. Here, you’ll find a gorgeous lake enveloped by mountains, glaciers, rivers, waterfalls, coastal views, and even two active volcanoes. 

There’s plenty to do at Lake Clark, but if you only have a day, we recommend focusing your efforts on spotting brown bears. There are over 200 of them residing inside the park as well as other creatures, including caribou, moose, Dall sheep, black bears, Beluga whales, harbor seals, sea otters, wolves, and Stellar Sea Lions. Go on a hike or rent a kayak and see how many of these species you can spot during your day trip to this hidden gem! 

6. Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center 

If getting close and personal with wildlife is on your Alaska bucket list, a day trip from Anchorage to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center is a must on your itinerary. 

Located in the Portage Valley, this humongous conservation center was opened with the aim of rehabilitating orphaned and injured animals. Here, you’ll be able to see plenty of species, be it on a walk, on a scenic drive, or on a bike. Guided tours around the sanctuary are also available for those who want to get more personal with the animals, learn their stories, and even get to care for a few of them! 

As if the chance of seeing animals like reindeer, gray wolves, moose, bears, and muskox wasn’t enough, the conservation center is also surrounded by the alluring Chugach Mountains and the Turnagain Arm Inlet, making the entire way here an absolute visual treat. 

7. Eklutna Lake 

Eklutna is a lake that was formed when a massive glacier retreated and streams from the mountains filled the valley with water. 

Set only 26 miles away from Anchorage, a visit to this gorgeous lake makes for a very easy day trip from the city. If you visit during the summer, you’ll be able to make the most out of the lake, with activities like canoeing, fishing, and kayaking being favorites. 

Come winter, Eklutna Lake becomes a mecca for cross-country skiing, fat-tire biking, and even Aurora Borealis viewing. Hiking is also a popular year-round activity. 

8. Moose Pass 

Set only two hours away, Moose Pass is another of the best day trips from Anchorage for those looking to experience glorious Alaskan nature. 

Located in a sub-polar setting, Moose Pass is a haven for gorgeous scenery, with hiking trails available that will have you stumbling across mountain views, crystal-clear lakes, spruce tree forests, and berry patches. 

​​9. Matanuska Glacier 

Located along the National Scenic Glenn Highway, the Matanuska Glacier is a colossal glacier that is a whopping 27 miles and 4 miles wide, making it the largest glacier that is accessible by car in the country. 

Simply gawking at this glacier is an experience unlike any other, but this day trip has even more to offer in case you want to linger a while longer. Within the state park, you’ll also get the chance to try your hand at river rafting and ziplining if you’re feeling adventurous, but if you want more mellow activities, you can also choose from a variety of activities like berry picking, hiking, and wildlife spotting during the summer months. 

10. Chugach National Forest 

Boasting over 6 million acres of untouched nature (that’s bigger than New Hampshire!), Chugach National Forest is a wonderland of quintessential Alaskan scenery than can be visited on a day trip from Anchorage. 

Due to its massive size, most people opt to spend a few days within the park, but it can very well be treated as a day trip if you’re willing to endure an early wake-up call. Chugach is home to a range of landscapes that include rain forests, boreal woods, humongous wetlands, and coastal inlets. Moreover, you’ll find over 20 tidewater glaciers here! 

One of the best things to do in order to cover as much ground as possible is driving the Copper River Highway, which will take you through a variety of terrains within the park. Other activities visitors love include hiking and biking, taking the Glacier Discovery Train to Spencer Glacier, viewing wildlife, paddling over tributaries, and checking out a few glaciers. 

11. Portage Valley 

Set an hour’s drive southeast of Anchorage, Portage Valley is a wonderful day trip to take if what you’re after is a day spent enjoying the outdoors. 

Most people visit Portage Valley to complete the Trail of Blue Ice, a 5-mile biking and hiking route connecting most of the developed stops along the road and providing spectacular vistas. This is a pretty flat route, so it can easily be completed in a day without much effort! 

Aside from hiking and biking, another favorite thing to do at Portage Valley is paddling around a few of the lakes in the area. Trout fishing is spectacular here as well! 

12. Crow Creek Gold Mine 

If a little history sounds like your jam, make sure to add Crow Creek Gold Mine to your list of day trips from Anchorage to take. 

Established in the late 19th century, this mine provides a window to the past into the Gold Rush of Alaska. During your visit, you’ll be able to admire historical buildings, see a wide array of antiques, admire the oldest building in the Anchorage municipality, and go on a guided and extremely immersive tour in order to learn about gold in Alaska. If you’re feeling up for the challenge, you can even join in and try your hand at finding gold! 

13. Denali National Park 

Denali National Park is one of Alaska’s most visited parks thanks to the fact that it can be accessed by road, unlike most of the rest. 

Home to the tallest mountain in the United States, Denali boasts a whopping 6 million acres of the Alaskan wilderness, which encompasses different ecosystems such as taiga, tundra, and glaciers. 

For the ultimate adventure and to cover as much of the park as possible in a short time, a flightseeing tour is a great option. Along the ride, you’ll be able to truly get a perspective of how vast Denali is, all while getting to spot wildlife and see mountains from above. Another option is traveling by helicopter, which allows you the unique chance to land on a glacier! 

If you’re not too keen on flying, you can also opt to drive the park’s 92-mile scenic road. This scenic drive will give you the chance to stop and plenty of viewpoints as well as several trailheads in case you want to explore further afield on foot! 

14. Prince William Sound 

Tucked away inside the Chugach National Forest, Prince William Sound boasts over 3,000 miles of beautiful coastline, making it a humongous protected marine area. 

Here, you’ll be able to witness marine life in Alaska in its full splendor, with Stellar sea lions, humpback whales, harbor seals, and sea otters being just a few of the species you may be able to spot on a marine expedition. 

Aside from that, many more animals are on the ground, including Black and Brown bears, eagles, moose, and plenty more. Aside from seeing wildlife galore, other incredible things to do in the region include hiking across several trails, going jet skiing amid glaciers, seeing waterfalls, and so much more. 

Prince William Sound is so vast that it can be accessed from different sides. Since this is a day trip, the easiest way to do so is by entering through the town of Whittier, which is located 60 miles from Anchorage. 

15. Homer 

This quaint town is located a 4-hour drive away from Anchorage, but if you start the day early enough, Homer can very well be done as a day trip. 

The drive itself is part of the adventure, especially as you start getting close to Homer, with a few of the views of the repertoire being the Kenai Mountains, plenty of volcanic crests, and Kachemak Bay. 

On a day trip, the best things to do include strolling around Homer’s adorable streets to take in that small-town Alaska charm, hopping on a helicopter tour to enjoy the scenery around, or going fishing (Homer is known as the Halibut Fishing Capital of the World!)

1. Monticello, Virginia   

Distance from Washington D.C. ~ via I-95 S (2 hours 18 minutes) 

Experience the ideal Washington, D.C. weekend getaway when you visit Monticello in Charlottesville, Virginia. This architectural masterpiece was the home of Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States and author of the Declaration of Independence.  

There are many exciting things to see and do at Monticello, which is why we encourage you to spend at least one full day there. First, take a tour through the house itself, which Thomas Jefferson built and rebuilt over the span of 40 years. Experience breathtaking scenery, such as the “nickel view,” which has been engraved on the nickel since 1938!  

Many other experiences also await you, like Jefferson’s famous botanical gardens, the Life of Sally Hemings exhibit, interactive tours through the slaves’ quarters, and more. Visitors can explore the house and grounds on their own with an audio tour or take a guided tour with a professional guide.

2. Richmond, Virginia

Visiting Richmond is another one of our favorite Washington DC day trips, as it’s filled with diverse activities for both individuals and families. There are endless historical sites, museums, restaurants, and activities for all to enjoy.  

If you’re traveling with kids, spending a day at King’s Dominion is a must. This all-inclusive theme park has more than 60 rides (including a 4D spin coaster), a 20-acre water park, and more. Richmond also has many outdoor activities, such as rock climbing, hiking the 52-mile Virginia Capital Trail, or white water rafting on the James River.  

History buffs will love visiting iconic landmarks like Malvern Hill Battlefield, Henricus History Park (where Pocahontas lived), and the American Civil War Museum. You can also walk the Richmond Slave Trail, explore the Hanover Courthouse, Hanover Tavern, and much more.  

Going on a day trip from DC doesn’t mean you have to spend lots of money. There are many free and inexpensive destinations in Richmond for families to experience, like Ashland Berry Farm, Belle Isle, and numerous parks and museums.  

3. Shenandoah National Park, Virginia 

Distance from Washington D.C. ~ via I-66 W (1 hour, 40 minutes) 

One of the best Washington DC day trips you can take during the fall is to Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. The temperatures are crisp from late September through November, and the foliage is gorgeous – one of the best US National Parks to visit in the fall. Vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows frame every walking path and transform the park into an autumn wonderland.  

Shenandoah National Park has much to offer, regardless of when you decide to visit. The 300-square-mile area is filled with breathtaking panoramic views on Skyline Drive. This 105-mile Virginia scenic drive takes you the length of the entire park and offers numerous photo opportunities along the way. There are also tumbling waterfalls to discover and miles of hiking trails for both amateur and experienced hikers.  

If you’re planning on spending a few days in Shenandoah, there is no shortage of places to stay. This popular east coast national park has many different campgrounds, cabins, and lodges in various locations, perfect for both small and large groups.

4. National Aquarium, Maryland 

Distance from Washington D.C. ~ via I-95 N (1 hour, 9 minutes) 

Visit one of the nation’s top three aquariums in Maryland and take a journey to an underwater world! The National Aquarium in Maryland is only about an hour away (depending on traffic), and it’s the perfect option for families who are looking for day trips near DC.  

Children will love interacting with thousands of different species in spectacular habitats, including sharks, dolphins, crocodiles, exotic fish, birds, and more. As you walk through the aquarium, you can participate in interactive animal exhibits, lessons from sealife experts, and 4D films. There are also special tours during the week and at different times throughout the year.  

Take a break and stop at one of the aquarium’s two restaurants for a bite to eat. Or you can enjoy a meal at a nearby restaurant – just make sure you get your hand stamped before you leave!

Pro Tip: Don’t miss the award-winning Blacktip Reef, an exhibit that features fascinating creatures, including whiptail rays, zebra sharks, blacktip reef sharks, and others.  

5. Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park, Maryland 

Distance from Washington D.C. ~ via I-270 N & I-70 W (1 hour, 17 minutes) 

Become one of over 5 million visitors that experience the wonders within this historical national park each and every year. If you’d like to spend a day trip from DC out in nature, you’ll love this scenic drive in Maryland. There are over 180 miles of recreational, educational, and historical attractions to enjoy.  

You and your family can visit the C&O Canal Park year-round, and you can even bring your dog with you for the day! The park has more than 600 points of interest, so there is always something new to explore, whether you’re interested in hiking, camping, or sightseeing. One of the most popular trails is Section A of the Billy Goat Trail.

If you plan on staying the night, why not spend it in a historical lockhouse? Each of the seven lockhouses can sleep up to 8 people, but choose wisely – some lockhouses have all the amenities, and others lack electricity and heating. If you wish to avoid the 1800s experience, we recommend avoiding those!

6. Antietam National Battlefield, Maryland 

Distance from Washington D.C. ~ via I-270 N (1 hour, 27 minutes) 

Antietam National Battlefield is a must-see for those interested in America’s Civil War. On September 17, 1862, over 23,000 soldiers died on what is known as the bloodiest day in American history. Antietam is now a national park that offers its visitors many exciting and educational experiences. 

Begin your visit at the newly renovated visitor center, which is open year-round. The visitor center features a small exhibit and gift shop. Next, explore Dunker Church and walk down Bloody Lane, where Union and Confederate soldiers fought for almost four hours over a 1000-yard portion of Sunken Road.  

You can also stroll across Burnside Bridge, climb to the top of the Observation Tower, and explore Philip Pry Farm. If you visit during the summer or on weekends during the spring and fall,  the Newcomer House and the Pry House Field Hospital Museum are also accessible.

7. Ocean City Beach, Maryland 

Distance from Washington D.C. ~ via US-50 E (2 hours 52 minutes) 

Voted one of the nation’s Top 10 Beaches by TripAdvisor, Ocean City Beach features 10 miles of beautiful shoreline. It’s an excellent destination for families, where all can enjoy swimming, boating, and sunbathing. Ocean Beach’s waves are also popular with surfers, and your kids will also enjoy boogie boarding!  

Ocean Beach also has much to offer aside from its gorgeous beaches. You can bike or walk along the three-mile boardwalk, which is lined with various stores, arcades, and eye-catching amusements. You can also find many free activities during the summer, like fireworks, movies, concerts, and ice cream. 

If you have extra time, enjoy a bite to eat at one of Ocean City’s many delicious restaurants. Savor fresh seafood and boardwalk fries near the beach, or sip a cold craft beer at one of the local brewpubs. If you enjoy rollerblading or skateboarding, you can visit Ocean City Skate Bowl Park or Northside Park.  

Pro Tip: There is so much to see and do in Ocean City, so plan your trip in advance and make it an overnighter if you can! 

8. Loudoun County, Virginia 

Distance from Washington D.C. ~ via VA-267 W (57 minutes) 

Loudoun County is a wine-lovers paradise, with over 40 wineries and tasting rooms less than an hour away from D.C. It’s also home to around 30 craft breweries, cideries, and meaderies. You can easily spend several days savoring all that Loudoun County offers, and it’s well worth a few repeat trips.  

Loudoun County is also one of the best Washington DC day trips for nature enthusiasts, containing beautiful parks like Morven Park, Ball’s Bluff Battlefield Regional Park, and Ashburn Park. Of course, there’s something for history lovers as well, including the National Sporting Library & Museum, Winmill Carriage Museum, Oatlands Historic House and Gardens, and more.

Best Day Trips From Seattle, Washington

Distances have been taken from Downtown Seattle and can vary with traffic and road conditions.

Mount Rainier National Park

Distance from Seattle: 103 miles ~ via WA-161 (2 hours 15 minutes)

Mount Rainier National Park is one of the most popular national parks in North America, and for good reason. The most glaciated peak in the continental US draws climbers from all over the world, and the views from the summit are truly breathtaking.

However, Rainier is more than just a mountain. The park also contains a diverse range of ecosystems, including lowland forests, alpine tundra, and wetlands. In addition, the park is home to an abundance of over one thousand plant and wildlife species, including the northern spotted owl, Pacific fisher, elk, black bear, and mountain goats.

A day trip to Mount Rainier National Park is the perfect way to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life. The 80-mile drive to the park is stunning, and once you arrive, plenty of activities keep you busy. Hiking is a popular activity in the park, and there are trails of varying difficulty levels to suit all fitness levels.

For those looking for a scenic hike with not one but two lakes, the Bench and Snow Lakes Trail offers a moderate 2.5-mile round-trip hike. The trailhead is located off Stevens Canyon Road, about 1.5 miles east of Reflection Lakes.

Along the way, hikers will pass through meadow flowers and bear grass in the summer months before arriving at Bench Lake and then continuing on to Snow Lake. Time needed: 2 hours.

For a shorter hike with equally stunning views, try the Skyline Trail. This paved 1-mile round-trip trail begins at the upper Paradise parking lot and takes hikers through beautiful subalpine meadows to Myrtle Falls lookout with views of Mount Rainier and Tatoosh Range along the way. Time needed: 35 minutes.

Or, for a memorable family hike with an amazing payoff, try the popular Silver Falls Loop Trail. This 2.7-mile round-trip hike through an old-growth forest takes you to a gorgeous 75-foot waterfall that the kids will never forget.

Keep your eyes peeled for deer, and listen for woodpeckers along the way. Access the trail from the Ohanapecosh Campground at Loop B near the visitor center. Time needed: 2 hours.

Top Tip: Avoid summer weekends when the park entrances become very congested. NPS recommends arriving before 10:00 AM or after 2:30 PM to avoid peak queuing; car parking may be limited too. In winter, vehicles can only enter from the Nisqually entrance – check road status here.

La Conner

Distance from Seattle: 67 miles ~ via I-5 ( 1 hour 10 minutes)

For a day trip with a more relaxed vibe, head to the quaint town of La Conner. This artsy town on the Swinomish Channel is a little over an hour’s drive north of Seattle with a lot to offer.

It’s known for its beautiful tulip fields, which attract visitors from all over during the tulip season in April. The colorful flowers are a perfect backdrop for a picnic lunch or a leisurely walk.

After admiring the tulips, stroll through the charming downtown area with its galleries, shops, and cafes. Be sure to check out the MoNA – Museum of Northwest Art – for a dose of culture.

If you’re feeling active, rent some bikes and explore the scenic backroads, or go kayaking or paddle boarding in one of the many nearby waterways.

And, of course, no trip to La Conner would be complete without sampling the local cuisine. Be sure to try the famous Dungeness crab cakes at the La Conner Seafood and Prime Rib House. And don’t forget to sample the fresh oysters, too!

Victoria, B.C.

Distance from Seattle: 107 miles ~ via US-101 (4 hours 20 minutes with ferry)

For a quick getaway from the hustle and bustle of Seattle, Victoria on Vancouver Island, BC, makes for a great day trip destination (though a full weekend may be preferred, or it’s a long day of driving!).

Just a short ferry ride across Puget Sound will take you to the laid-back capital city of British Columbia, Canada. With its colonial-era architecture, quaint cafes, and abundance of green space, Victoria has a distinctly old-world charm and a British feel.

And while it may be small in size, there’s no shortage of things to see and do. Visitors can explore the majestic Craigdarroch Castle, wander through the picturesque Butchart Gardens or simply relax on one of the many beautiful beaches.

You can also enjoy some of the city’s best views from atop Vancouver Island’s highest point, Mount Tolmie. If you’re feeling adventurous, go whale watching or sea kayaking while in town.

When it comes to food, Victoria is renowned for its fresh seafood. Be sure to try some of the local specialties like afternoon tea and fish and chips.

And, of course, no trip to Victoria would be complete without trying the Butter Chicken Pizza!

Olympic National Park

Distance from Seattle: 82 miles ~ via WA-305/US-101 (2 hours 25 minutes including ferry)

If you’re looking for a breathtaking day trip from Seattle, Olympic National Park is the perfect destination. Olympic National Park is one of the most diverse national parks in the country, a UNESCO site, and a must-see for any nature lovers.

Known for its dramatic landscapes, including snow-capped mountains, pristine rainforests, and rugged coastline, the park is home to some of the tallest and most interesting trees in the world.

Of course, hiking is a popular activity in the park, and there are trails of varying difficulty levels to suit all fitness levels. Animal lovers will go wild over the endemic species that call this isolated peninsula home, like the wily Olympic short-tailed weasel and adorably chubby Olympic marmot.

More commonly seen on hikes are Roosevelt elk, black-tailed deer, mountain goats, and river otters. Keep your eyes peeled for bald eagles, Peregrine falcons, and red-tailed hawks as you explore the many different ecosystems in the park.

The park’s popular tide pools are teeming with life and a great place to explore with family at low tide. The most popular is Mora’s Hole in the Wall, which is about a 2-mile walk from the Rialto Beach parking lot. Here you’ll find a variety of tidepool creatures like urchins, anemones, barnacles, and crabs.

Be sure to be aware of the tides, take caution as you explore the pools, and don’t remove any of the creatures you find. The park ranger-led tidepool walks are a great way to learn about the inhabitants of these fascinating ecosystems.

As you listen to the sound of the waves crashing against the shore, you’ll understand why Olympic National Park is such a special place.

Top Tip – Whilst the main park entrance near Port Angeles is within easy driving distance of Seattle, there’s no through roads between attractions and major trailhead points. If you plan to explore deeper into Olympic National Park and visit the Olympic Peninsula coast, you’ll need to allow yourself several days for this immensely scenic drive.

Leavenworth

Distance from Seattle: 134 miles ~ via I-90/US-97 (2 hours 15 minutes)

For a day trip that feels like you’ve been transported to a different country, head to the charming Bavarian village of Leavenworth. Located about 2.5 hours east of Seattle in the Cascade mountains, this quaint little town is the perfect place to enjoy some time outdoors.

In the winter, hit the slopes at nearby Stevens Pass for some world-class skiing and snowboarding, or go for a scenic sleigh ride through the woods.

In the summer, enjoy hiking or biking on one of the many trails in the area, or go whitewater rafting down the Wenatchee River. If you’re feeling adventurous, take a zipline tour through the treetops or go paragliding off Castle Rock.

After a day of outdoor activities, stroll through the town to explore the unique shops and stop for some German food and beer like sauerbraten (beef roast) and strudel (apple pastry). Don’t miss the opportunity to try some world-famous Leavenworth bratwurst (sausage)!

Snoqualmie Falls

Distance from Seattle: 30 miles ~ via I-90 (45 minutes)

Snoqualmie Falls is one of the most popular day trips from Seattle, and for good reason. This stunning waterfall is located just 45 minutes east of the city. It makes for a great short drive from Seattle and is an easy stop if you’re driving to or from the mountains.

At 270 feet, the falls are one of the tallest in Washington state, and they’re especially stunning when viewed from the observation deck. The park surrounding the falls also has plenty of hiking trails, making it the perfect place to get some fresh air and take in the incredible scenery.

In addition to the falls themselves, another highlight of Snoqualmie Falls is the nearby Salish Lodge. This historic hotel is known for its spectacular views of the falls and its fine dining restaurant, which serves up fresh Northwest cuisine.

Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument

Distance from Seattle: 148 miles ~ via I-5 (2 hours 30 minutes)

Located about 2 hours south of Seattle, Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument is a must-visit for anyone interested in volcanic activity or the history of its 1980 eruption.

Today, the park offers visitors a chance to see the active volcano up close and learn about its impact on the environment. Mount St. Helens is still active, and visitors can see steam rising from the crater!

The park offers plenty of opportunities to learn about the mountain, including ranger-led talks and walks, an interactive visitor center, and the Johnston Ridge Observatory.

The Hummocks Trail is a family-friendly, relatively easy, 2.3-mile round-trip route where you can see the devastation caused by Mount St. Helens’ eruption and witness nature’s rebirth in action.

While the volcano tends to be what Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument is known for, there are also plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy in the park, like exploring one of the longest lava tubes in the world, geocaching, and horseback riding.

In the winter, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are popular activities. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife as you explore the park – some common sightings include elk, deer, rabbits, squirrels, and birds.

There are plenty of interesting day trips within Illinois and the surrounding states that are just a short drive away.

Here are nine of our favorite day trips, all within 3 hours from the Windy City with superb scenic driving routes and byways, interesting historic towns and sensational state parks to explore.

Best Day Trips From Chicago

Starved Rock State Park, IL

Distance from Chicago: 93 miles via I-55/I-80 (1 hour 30 minutes)

Starved Rock State Park is about an hour and a half drive from Chicago, in the town of Oglesby, Illinois. The park gets its name from the sandstone cliffs that tower over the canyons and rivers below.

It’s a favorite among hikers, with over 13 miles of trails where you can traverse through canyons and see waterfalls created by melting glaciers. You might even spot a bald eagle or two if you’re lucky.

There are plenty of things to do in the park besides hiking. In the winter, you can go cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. And in the summer, you can cool off with a swim in one of the many swimming holes.

There are also boat tours available that take you through the canyons on the Illinois River.

If you’re looking for a longer trip, there are camping sites available in the park. Or, you can stay in one of the many lodges or cabins that are located nearby.

Galena, IL

Distance from Chicago: 163 miles via I-90/US-20 (2 hours 45 minutes)

Galena is a small city located in northwestern Illinois, about 3 hours from Chicago. It’s known for its stunning bluffs along the Galena River, its rich history dating back to the early 19th century, and warm, welcoming residents.

The city was once a booming lead mining town and was even home to President Ulysses S. Grant. Today, it’s a popular tourist destination for its historic downtown area and its scenic setting in the Driftless Area of Illinois.

While it may be small, Galena certainly packs a punch when it comes to things to do. Stroll down Main Street, lined with over 100 specialty shops, art galleries, and restaurants.

Be sure to stop in at the Galena Canning Company, a family-owned business that has been canning fruits and vegetables for three generations. Their biggest seller is the Apple BBQ Sauce, perfect for summer grilling.

Take a tour of the Ulysses S. Grant Home, or learn about the city’s history at the Galena History Museum. Galena is also home to five wineries, some of which offer tours and tastings. With vineyards nestled in the rolling hills, these wineries offer stunning views along with their delicious wines.

For some outdoor fun, hike around nearby Apple River Canyon State Park or take a Mississippi River Cruise.

Kalamazoo, MI

Distance from Chicago: 147 miles via I-94 (2 hours, 25 minutes)

If you’re looking for something a little more offbeat, consider a trip to Kalamazoo, Michigan. This quirky city is about 2.5 hours from Chicago and is known for its arts scene, craft beer breweries, and unique attractions.

One of the most popular things to do in Kalamazoo is visit one of the many craft breweries. Some of our favorites include Bell’s Brewery, Saugatuck Brewing Company, and the Kalamazoo Beer Exchange. Brewery tours are a great way to learn about the brewing process and taste some delicious beer.

Art lovers will want to check out the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts. The KIA is a world-renowned art museum with a collection of almost 5,000 works of art. Or maybe grab an ice cream and take a stroll to enjoy some of the many outdoor sculptures scattered throughout the city.

Kalamazoo isn’t all city, though! Surrounded by beautiful lakes, parks, and hiking trails, you can go swimming, kayaking, or stand-up paddle boarding on one of the nearby lakes in the summer. Its one of the best hidden gem family vacation spots in the Midwest.

And in the winter, there’s no shortage of outdoor activities either – hit the slopes at Timber Ridge ski area or go cross-country skiing at Fort Custer State Park.

Arthur, IL

Distance from Chicago: 174 miles via I-57 (2 hours 45 minutes)

Located in the heart of Illinois, Arthur is located less than 3 hours south of Chicago and is home to Illinois’ largest and oldest Amish community.

The Amish are a group of religious people who live simple lives without many modern conveniences. They are known for their handcrafted furniture, quilts, and delicious baked goods.

Distance from Chicago: 201 miles via I-55 (3 hours)

Located just 3 hours from Chicago, Springfield is the capital city of Illinois. The city is known for its many historical sites and museums, including the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, which chronicles the life of America’s 16th president.

Springfield was also home to President Barack Obama during his time as an Illinois state senator.

Kankakee, IL

Distance from Chicago: 60 miles via I-57 (1 hour)

Just an hour south of Chicago, Kankakee is a small city with a number of historical sites, including the Kankakee Railroad Museum, which chronicles the history of the local railroads.

Architectural buffs will enjoy the B. Harley Bradley House, designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright, along with the many custom-built Victorian era homes along the riverfront.

Kankakee is also a great place for nature lovers. The Kankakee River Trail is a 10-mile walking path perfect for a leisurely stroll or to go for a run.

Look for the Rock Creek Suspension Bridge, originally built in 1929, which spans 75 feet across the river at a height of about 75 feet.

For a more active experience, rent a kayak or canoe and paddle down the river, or try catching dinner on a fly fishing tour.

Rockford, IL

Distance from Chicago: 89 miles via I-90 (1 hour 35 minutes)

Just a short drive from Chicago, Rockford is the third largest city in Illinois and the county seat of Winnebago County.

The city is home to several historical sites, including the Midway Village Museum, which chronicles the area’s history from the days of the Native Americans through the present day.
