Despite its somewhat desolate title, Death Valley National Park is actually home to a ton of lively scenery.

Picture massive salt flats lining the horizon, rock formations that look straight out of this world, colorful mountains dotting the roads, and a wide array of historical and desert goodness and you’ve got yourself a pretty good picture of what a visit to this gem of a national park is like.

Because Death Valley National Park is deemed one of the hottest places in the entire world, visiting during the summer months isn’t exactly recommended for a great experience (we’re talking 120+ degree temperatures!).

Winters, though, bring in cooler temperatures ranging from the mid-60s to the low 70s. Combine that with sunny skies and you’ve got yourself a perfect winter escape in one of the most unique landscapes of California, and the USA!

Arches National Park

Location: Utah

A fiery desert landscape may not be the first thing that pops to mind when you picture a winter trip, but the colder months just happen to be one of the best times of the year to pay Arches National Park a visit.

As its name may have clued you in, this beautiful national park in Utah is home to tons of natural archways (over two thousand of them!). Moreover, the park also boasts expansive mesas, otherworldly-looking rock formations that look as though they pierce the sky, and a vibrant red landscape that will make you feel as though you’re walking on Mars.

While temperatures do get chilly during the winter, it doesn’t really get cold enough to ruin the day. Moreover, Arches isn’t exactly popular during the winter months, making crowds at some of its most frequented spots almost non-existent (during summer, the crowds are so heavy a timed entry permit system has been introduced.

As if that weren’t reason enough to convince you to visit this epic national park during the winter months, the winter skies and dreamy snow-dusted La Sal Mountains in the distance make for truly magical sunrises and sunsets!

Biscayne National Park

Location: Florida

If you’d rather avoid the cold altogether and are on the lookout for a tropical escape, look no further than Biscayne National Park in Florida.

Set south of Miami, this park is so different from the rest because 95% of it is set under the water. This means you’ll definitely need to get wet in order to get to see everything, which you can do via a snorkeling or scuba diving adventure, depending on your preference.

Another way to explore for those who prefer not to swim is by booking a glass-bottom boat tour. This may not give you the chance to get super close to the marine life that calls Biscayne its home, but it’s guaranteed to provide some seriously epic encounters nonetheless.

Once you’ve explored the ocean, make sure you also check out the remaining 5% of the park, which is set on small islands and islets you can hike (or relax) on while stumbling across unique wildlife and views so good you’ll have to pinch yourself to believe they’re real!

Yellowstone National Park

Location: Idaho/Wyoming/Montana

Yellowstone may be a super popular summer destination, but how about seeing its already striking landscape from a completely different perspective?

During the colder months, Yellowstone becomes a winter wonderland of enchanting snow-dusted forests, frozen lakes, and gorgeous geysers that look straight out of this world. Moreover, you’ll also get to have the scenery at one of the most popular national parks in the entire country all to yourself!

Come November, getting to Yellowstone National Park does become a bit tougher as most roads are closed to regular traffic. Still, though, with a little planning ahead, you’ll be guaranteed to be in for a winter adventure of a lifetime!

Canyonlands National Park

Location: Utah

Picture enormous sandstone spires that look as though they reach the clouds, extensive red rock canyons, and whacky-looking rock formations lining the scenery, and you’ve got a pretty good idea of what visiting Canyonlands National Park is all about.

Canyonland’s high season is during the spring and fall, but winter brings in picture-perfect sunsets, fewer crowds, and excellent hiking trails ready to be explored in order to take in the area’s desert magic.

Remember that snow may make a few of the trails at Canyonlands a bit treacherous, so we recommend sticking to the Island in the Sky section of the park during this time. This is the most popular part of Canyonlands, where crowds usually gather any other time of the year, making it an excellent choice to visit to get some of the park’s most famous highlights all to yourself!

Bryce Canyon National Park

Location: Utah

Ever wondered what Mars would look like if it got snowed on? If you haven’t, I bet you’re picturing it now, and the landscape at Bryce Canyon National Park during the winter months looks as close as you can get to that!

If you think Bryce Canyon’s striking red rock hoodoos are pure eye candy, imagine what they’d look like blanketed in white snow! As if that weren’t reason enough to visit, Bryce Canyon’s night skies during the winter are amazing as ever thanks to the cold and dry air, making stargazing here a true treat (make sure you bring a blanket along!).

Even though Acadia National Park is mostly renowned for its gorgeous fall foliage, visiting during the winter months provides a totally different experience worthy of being on your bucket list.

The contrast of the snow against the coastal views of the Atlantic creates a truly stunning background perfect for all sorts of winter fun. While scenic drives can be off the cards during winter, with the Park Loop Road usually closing from December 1 through until spring, winter hiking is a common activity, but make sure you bring the right gear.

Winter sports are another winter highlight in Acadia, with 45 miles of carriage roads for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing available. Snowmobiling is another top activity in Acadia, especially for those keen to experience the park’s scenic road from a totally different angle.

Moreover, birding in Acadia during the winter is top-notch, when leafless trees open up the forest for easy viewing. Some species you may see include snowy owls, black-capped chickadees, and Harlequin ducks.

Grand Canyon National Park

Location: Arizona

What could be better than seeing the most famous natural landmark in the United States and one of the 7 Wonders of the Natural World? Seeing it blanketed in layers of snow!

While the lesser-visited North Rim section of the Grand Canyon closes during the winter, the South Rim (which tends to get super crowded any other time of the year) remains open to visitors, giving you the perfect opportunity to explore the canyon without having to share the views with hoards of people.

If you’d rather stay warm, a great way to explore the park is by driving its scenic road to Desert View. Another must-do activity is booking a flight to get a birds-eye view of the canyon, which looks even more beautiful during the winter when it’s covered by snow!

Saguaro National Park

Location: Arizona

Located less than an hour from Tucson, Arizona, Saguaro National Park still remains a bit of a hidden gem in the national parks system and a perfect go-to during the colder months!

This arid wonderland sits right in the heart of the Sonoran Desert, and its allure comes from the fact that it is home to the country’s largest cacti and saguaros, some of which can grow up to 60 feet tall!

During your visit, you can explore the park on foot by going on a hike (the Desert Discovery Nature Trail is a great way to learn about the flora in the area), taking a scenic drive amidst saguaros (the 8-mile Cactus Forest Loop Drive is a must!), or searching for ancient petroglyphs.

While snowstorms are not that common, they happen, so you may get lucky and see a scene of cacti coated in white snow! It’s certainly one of the more unique places to visit in Arizona.

Denali National Park

Location: Alaska

Alaska in winter?! If you don’t mind freezing temperatures, Denali National Park is a true treat during the winter months, even if snowfall actually starts as early as August!

Days are short in Denali during the winter, but that brings in opportunities to get glimpses of the northern lights, all while getting the landscape during the day pretty much all to yourself.

Moreover, if you happen to be visiting in February, you’ll be in for a real treat at the park’s annual Winterfest, where you’ll get to catch snow block sculpting competitions, guided walks, dog-sledding adventures, and so much more!

Note that once snow falls, the roads may frequently close at Mile 3, Park Headquarters. From late February/March ploughing begins and travelers may be able to make it as far as Mile 13, Mountain Vista Rest Area but it is weather dependent.

Note that due to their remote nature, most national parks in Alaska are completely in accessible in winter. Denali is an exception due to its geographic location.

Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park

Location: Hawai’i

If you’d much rather see sunshine than snow, a visit to Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park is guaranteed to please.

Popular with snowbirds, this national park’s high season takes place during the winter, so if you don’t mind the crowds, it makes for a perfect destination to escape the cold.

As you explore the park, you’ll get to see black sandy beaches, rainforests with flora so huge you’ll feel as though you’re in a Jurassic Park setting and get to see two of the world’s most active volcanoes – Kīlauea and Mauna Loa.

• Street signs in Maui are often written in Hawaiian, which can be a fun way to learn some of the local language and culture.  
• The main car rental car companies are located at the Kahului Airport, but there are also other rental options in some of the bigger towns like Wailuku, which sometimes have cheaper prices.  

• When asking directions, locals will often give mauka and makai for answers. Mauka means “towards the mountains,” and makai means “towards the ocean,” which makes sense considering the landscape of the island!  
• Especially around towns and cities, many people use bicycles for transportation, so be extra vigilant for bicyclists on the road.

5 Best Scenic Drives in Maui, Hawaii

1. Scenic Drives in Maui: Hana Highway  

Distance: 64 miles 

Time Needed: 4 hours direct or 1-2 days with all the stops 

Hana Highway is arguably the most famous drive in Maui, and for a good reason. Not only does this winding road have gorgeous views of the eastern coast of Maui, but it also passes by many of the top attractions of the island.  

The journey starts in Kahului and ends in Hana, and we highly recommend heading out early in the day to beat the traffic. Starting earlier also gives you more opportunities to explore the various attractions along the way!  

What makes Hana Highway one of the best scenic drives in Maui isn’t just the view while, but all the stopping points. There are several waterfalls, including the picturesque Twin Falls, Hanawi Falls, and Wailua Falls. Often at these stopping points, you’ll also be able to find locals selling artwork or food.  

If you’re the type of person who can get a bit restless sitting in a car, there is no need to worry because there are plenty of places to get out and stretch your legs, like Pua’a Kaa State Wayside Park and the Hana Lava Tube where you’ll have the opportunity to see the underground lava tunnels of Hawaii!  

Of course, it wouldn’t be a road trip in Maui without beaches, and Hana Highway has plenty. Spots like Hamoa Beach and Koki Beach are perfect both for quick sightseeing stops or long, leisurely breaks.  

When to go: April-May and September-December are good times of year to travel the Hana Highway. Since the weather is typically pleasant, you can avoid the biggest tourist crowds, which peak during summer and winter vacation times.   

2. Scenic Drives in Maui: Kahekili Highway  

Distance: 21 miles  

Time Needed: 3-6 hours, depending on stops  

We recommend this spectacular Maui scenic drive for the adventure and adrenaline enthusiasts out there. This winding, narrow roads, cover a jaw-dropping section along the coast of Maui, known for its steep cliffs. Be warned; there are no guard rails!  

Often just a single lane road, traffic speeds along the Kahekili Highway can sometimes be as slow as five mph to ensure safety. However, it’s also not as traversed as other scenic drives in Maui, so you get to experience local towns, such as Kahakuloa Village, in a way other tourists miss out on.  

Top sights along the route include the Nakalele Blowhole, located near mile marker 38 (which requires a bit of hike to reach), and the famous 636-foot tall Kahakuloa Head, a stunning cliff face known for a spot called “Kahekili’s Leap.”  

When to go: Because of difficult driving conditions, it’s best to travel along Kahakili Highway during the dry season of the island between April and October.  

3. Scenic Drives in Maui: West Maui Circle Loop 

Distance: 60 miles  

Time Needed: 5-8 hours, depending on stops  

Another one of Maui’s scenic drives for adventure enthusiasts looking for a full day out, the West Maui Circle Loop is known for its one-lane driving experience next to sheer cliffs plummeting down to the ocean. Your heart will be racing both from the adrenaline rush and the spectacular scenery!  

Because of the trickier road conditions, it’s not as well-traveled as the Hana Highway, which means you’ll have the chance to experience some local towns like Lahaina and Wailuku, which both have interesting cultural landmarks.  

Including this route on your road trip in Maui will also bring you right past the famous Honolua Bay, located near mile marker 32. It’s one of the most popular snorkeling spots on the island and an incredible example of the rugged, rocky landscape of West Maui.  

Keep in mind that most car rental companies will warn against driving in West Maui (a few may even prohibit it!). However, locals take the route all the time, so as long as you’re committed to driving carefully, there’s little chance of having an issue but a guaranteed opportunity for a great adventure!  

When to go: Driving in West Maui is best during the dry season of the year, which is between April and October.  

4. Scenic Drives in Maui: Haleakala Highway  

Distance: 35 miles  

Time Needed: 1 hour to 4 hours, depending on stops  

Haleakala Highway is also known by the names Crater Road and Route 378. It’s a breathtaking drive within Haleakala National Park and goes right past the park’s tallest peak, Pu’u’ula’ula (Red Hill).  

This scenic drive in Maui is famous for claiming the world record of the steepest elevation climbs over the shortest distance. In just 35 miles, you’ll reach over 10,000 feet above sea level!  

To achieve this elevation abd reach the summit of Haleakala, you’ll have to navigate numerous hairpin turns and 32 switchbacks, but the other-worldly scenery, which has been described as “moonlike,” more than compensates for the challenges of the route. Unlike some of Maui’s other best scenic routes, Haleakala Highway has two lanes throughout.  

If you want to add another level of adventure to your drive, you can try to make it to Haleakala before the sun rises, which is said to be one of the most spectacular sights on the island!  

• Note that sunrise at Haleakala National Park requires a special timed permit.

When to go: There isn’t a bad time to visit the park, but keep in mind that December to February are the busiest times when prices tend to be higher. Summer months are usually the cheaper option for tourists.  

5. Scenic Drives in Maui: Upcountry Maui  

Distance: About 75 miles 

Time Needed: 3 hours to 1 day, depending on stops  

It’s pretty much impossible to get tired of the coastal scenery of Maui, but that doesn’t mean that the interior of the island isn’t worth exploring too! 

For your road trip around Maui, we definitely recommend including a voyage through Upcountry Maui, where you’ll get the chance to visit local towns and see another side of the island away from the tourist crowds on the beaches.  

The main stops of the trip include Makawao, Kula, Ulapalakua, and Pukalani. If you’re short on time, you can fit the Haleakala Highway trip into your upcountry route, but we recommend doing these on different days so you don’t feel rushed and have time to make all the stops.  

There are lots to see and explore along this scenic drive in Maui. Near the town of Ulupalakua, you’ll find the Ulupalakua Ranch, where local wines are produced.  

Make sure you plan for a stop at the Kula Botanical Garden, Maui’s first public garden and home to all the dazzling flora the island has to offer. Another unique spot in upcountry Maui is the Lavender Farm, located near the town of Kula. Not only does this farm smell amazing, but it also boasts a panoramic view of western Maui, so make sure to bring your camera!  

When to go: Any time of year is good for visiting upcountry Maui, but if you want to miss the majority of the tourist crowds, then April through May or September through November are good options.

The island is commonly nicknamed “The Gathering Place” for several reasons. For one, it’s Hawaii’s most populated island and the one that receives the most visitors every year, but it’s also called that way because it perfectly merges a plethora of cultures, lifestyles, and modernity with the ancient. 

If you’re currently plotting a trip to Oahu, chances are scenic driving around the island to get the most out of it is part of your plans. Even though lounging for hours on end at the many resorts that dot the place is definitely a great way to spend your vacay, fitting in a few adventures out in the open road is pretty easy, especially considering how small and drivable the island is! 

Below is a list of some of the most scenic drives in Oahu, be it short stints to get the best ocean views or adventures that can take several days for those who want to treat them as road trips. 

Tips for Driving in Oahu, Hawaii 

Even though Oahu and Hawaii have pretty much the same driving laws as the rest of the country, there are a few things worth noting down: 

• Pay attention to street signs, they are there for a reason! 
• This one is interesting: If you ask locals for directions, you’ll notice they’ll say mauka and mukai a lot. Makai means “drive towards the ocean,” and mauka translates into “to the mountains”! 
• The speed limit on most highways is 60 MPH unless noted otherwise. 
• Bicycles are an extremely popular transportation method, so keep your eyes out for them, especially around Honolulu and surrounding areas. 
• Street names in Oahu are usually written in Hawaiian. This can get a bit confusing if you don’t speak the language, but it’s also easy to get used to. 
• Foodies: There are plenty of food trucks scattered all over Oahu’s roads, especially on the ocean side. For that reason, we recommend driving counterclockwise when possible! 
• Crime in Oahu is rare but still, be mindful of leaving any valuables inside the car when you go out to explore. 
• You could loop around Oahu in just under 6 hours if you were to make 0 stops. Most scenic drives here are short and sweet, but we still recommend scheduling several hours for each as you’ll catch yourself making plenty of stops. 
• Honking your horn in Oahu is a huge no-no unless it’s an emergency as it’s considered extremely rude in Hawaii. 

The Most Scenic Drives in Oahu 

1. Lagoon Drive 

This short but incredibly scenic drive starts just right next to the Honolulu International Airport, making it one of the easiest scenic drives in Oahu to tackle for those who don’t want to waste any time and plan to rent a car at the airport! 

Lagoon Drive is actually incredibly quick and can be completed in under 5 minutes. Still, despite its shortness, the views along the way are absolutely breathtaking and a fabulous way to get an “Aloha!” from the island. 

At the very end of the road, you’ll find a parking lot and a viewpoint from where you can catch beautiful views of the ocean dotted by tiny islets, as well as airplanes landing and taking off. 

2. Highway 3 

This scenic Oahu drive starts right in Honolulu and will take you all the way to the easternmost side of the island.  

Although short, this drive will have you passing some of the most popular spots in Oahu, including Diamond Head, the Koolau Mountain Range, the Ha’iku Valley, and Kāneʻohe Bay. Gorgeous ocean vistas are the staples of this road, and you may very well have to pinch yourself to realize you aren’t dreaming! 

3. Pali Highway 

Pali Highway only takes 15 minutes to complete, but what it lacks in length, it makes up for with striking views. 

This incredibly popular scenic Oahu drive starts in downtown Honolulu and ends at the famous Pali Lookout, a viewpoint that provides mesmerizing views of the southern side of Oahu. 

Aside from the lookout point at the end, the drive itself is as beautiful as it can get, with glorious ocean views offered on one side and splendid mountains on the other.  

4. Windward Oahu 

If you want to tackle a drive that isn’t as popular as the others, Windward Oahu is a wonderful choice. 

This scenic road is actually an addition to the popular Honolulu to Kaneohe road, but most people don’t really know you can continue onwards. Once you reach Kaneohe, you can drive further toward Oahu’s North Shore in order to find this gem! 

This side of Oahu is called the Windward Coast and provides rugged ocean vistas, secret beaches you can get pretty much all to yourself, and landscapes as lush as they can get. 

We recommend allowing at least a full day to complete this drive because you’ll be making plenty of stops along the way. An interesting stop to make while driving is the Valley of the Temples at the foot of the Koʻolau mountains, which houses several Buddhist and Shinto temples. Mokolii is also a great place to spend a few hours exploring if you’re into nature, with plenty of hiking trails available and gorgeous lookout points on offer. 

5. Kamehameha Highway 

Starting in Kailua and ending there as well, the Kamehameha Highway is a great alternative if you don’t have an entire day to complete the Windward Oahu scenic drive. 

This drive only takes about 3 hours to complete and can easily be treated as a morning day trip. Kamehameha will take you through Diamond Head State Monument and the Punchbowl Crater, but the reason this drive is considered one of the most beautiful in the world is the picture-perfect ocean views it provides. 

For those who aren’t in a rush, you’ll also be able to find tons of beautiful beaches scattered all along the highway, many of which are extremely secluded, and you can have all to yourself! 

6. Tantalus Round Top Drive 

The Tantalus Round Top Drive is a very short one at only 6 miles, but the views it provides along the way are definitely ones for the books! 

As you make your way to the final viewpoint, you’ll be treated to striking views of Hanauma Bay, Diamond Head, and the Tantalus Quarry and Lava Tube. At the very end, you’ll get to park your car and step on a viewpoint that provides the most glorious views of Waikiki, Honolulu, and beyond. This is a particularly favorite drive for sunset views. 

7. Diamond Head Road 

This drive starts at Kalakaua Avenue on Waikiki and will take you all the way to Kapiolani Park in Honolulu, all while curving its way around the mesmerizing Diamond Head, a volcano that is definitely the most iconic natural landmark on Oahu. 

Aside from providing access to some of the best things to do in Honolulu, the magic of this drive is the fact that it will give you access to some of the most beautiful views of the rugged Oahu coastline, not to mention you’ll be awe-struck by the scenery of Diamond Head all along the way!
