3. Crater Lake National Park

Location: Oregon

4. Finger Lakes

Location: New York

The Finger Lakes are made up of eleven long and narrow lakes that, when looked at on a map, resemble fingers (hence the name).

When most people think of New York, they think of the city that never sleeps, New York City, but if you visit upstate New York, you wouldn’t believe that the two areas are located within the same state. Upstate is filled with beautiful scenery, quiet and calming surroundings.

8. Lake Cumberland

The pristine blue waters of Crater Lake make it one of the most picture-perfect regions on the US west coast. If you’re planning a Seattle to Crater Lake road trip, it’s important to realize that the journey will be just as good as the final destination.

You’ll be passing through some of the most beautiful areas of the Pacific Northwest and have opportunities to stop in Portland, the Columbia River Gorge, and other top travel sites.

In this guide, we’ll cover the logistics of a drive from Seattle to Crater Lake so you can plan an epic road trip of river rafting and mountain climbing!

Distance from Seattle to Crater Lake

The most direct distance from Seattle to Crater Lake is about 400 miles. To make the most of your road trip in the Pacific Northwest, you can take a more scenic route as you drive from Seattle to Crater Lake, including stops at places like Bend or side trips to visit Mount Hood and other natural parks.

This means the drive will be closer to 450 miles or possibly a bit longer, depending on how many side trips you add on.

How is the Drive From Seattle to Crater Lake?

Driving non-stop from Seattle to Crater Lake would take between 7 and 8 hours, depending on the traffic. However, there’s no reason to torture yourself with that much time behind the wheel, particularly when there are so many beautiful places to explore.

Planning for at least three days of driving will give you enough time to stop at parks and cities along the way, but you could easily take a week driving from Seattle to Crater Lake if you’re hoping to make multiple stops.

Best Time of Year to Drive from Seattle to Crater Lake

June through September are the months with the best weather for a drive from Seattle to Crater Lake. Keep in mind that Crater Lake is one of the snowiest places in the United States-often winters will bring an average of 43 feet of snow! This can make driving conditions difficult, if not impossible.

The shoulder seasons of spring and fall are also doable, but you’re still likely to come across lingering snow drifts in spring or early snowstorms in fall.

Best Stops on a Seattle to Crater Lake Road Trip

From cascading waterfalls to snowy mountain peaks, the number of places to stop on the scenic drive to Crater Lake from Seattle is endless! Below are some of the best places to visit so you can plan your time as you make your way through the wonders of the Pacific Northwest.

Snoqualmie Falls

Don’t get too comfortable driving as you leave Seattle. The first place worth stopping on your drive to Crater Lake from Seattle is just 30 minutes or so outside of the city.

Snoqualmie Falls plummets a jaw-dropping 270 feet and is considered one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the state of Washington.

The viewing platform from the top of the falls is very close to the parking area, but it’s also worth your time to explore some of the other trails. There’s a short hiking trail to reach the bottom of the falls (just be prepared for the climb back up), and the surrounding area has other trails through the forest.

If you’re already hungry, there’s also a picnic area where you can have lunch or a quick snack break before you keep driving.

Mount Rainier National Park

Any road trip in Washington should include a visit to the popular Mount Rainier National Park. It would be easy to spend a week or more at Mount Rainier, but at the very least, you can stop for the afternoon to check out some of the top hiking trails like Skyline Trail or Mount Fremont Lookout.

The first segment of the Skyline Trail to reach the spectacular Myrtle Falls is particularly family-friendly since it’s on a paved path. From there you can decide if you want to continue to the more difficult parts of the trail.

Mount Rainier also has a lot of scenic drives, so you don’t necessarily need to get out of your car much to see some of the best areas of the park.

Paradise and Sunrise are two of the best places to drive in Mount Rainier, although be prepared for lots of traffic and tourists, especially during the summer months.

If you want to spend more time at Mount Rainier, there are lots of campgrounds and lodges in and around the park, but make sure you reserve a place well in advance since spots fill up quickly.

Portland

Portland is about 3 hours south of Seattle, and it makes a good midway point for a drive from Seattle to Crater Lake. Spending a night or two in the city will give you more time to explore the fun cultural attractions as well as some of the nearby natural wonders.

Full of quirky eateries, beautiful parks, and cool museums, Portland has something every traveler will enjoy. On rainy days there are plenty of indoor activities like the Portland Art Museum, which has over 45,000 works of art on display. Another good indoor activity is browsing for books at the famous Powell’s City of Books, the world’s largest independent bookstore.

If the sun is shining, explore the International Rose Test Garden, where over 650 types of roses from around the world are grown. Forest Park is another popular outdoor place to visit and covers 5,200 acres with trails along the river and through the forest.

Kids will enjoy picking up a treat at Voodoo Doughnuts, a bakery famous for its homemade artisan doughnuts of unique flavors bigger than your head!

Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area

The Columbia River Gorge is one of the top natural attractions near Portland. If you have time to spare on your road trip from Seattle to Crater Lake, an afternoon (or even a day or two) exploring the gorge is a great stop to include.

With over 90 waterfalls, endless hiking and mountain biking trails, and water sports like kayaking and swimming, the gorge is a perfect place for outdoor enthusiasts to visit.

Make sure you have your camera along to get photos of some of the most picturesque waterfalls, like Bridal Veil and Multnomah Falls (the tallest waterfall in Oregon!).

Crown Point is another popular spot for photographers; located right along the Columbia River Highway, the point has a spectacular panoramic view of the gorge, plus the cool Vista House which has a museum and gift shop.

Another excellent drive in the gorge area is called the Fruit Loop. For over 30 miles, the charming country lane winds through the apple and pear orchards along the Columbia River, and there are plenty of places to stop to visit wineries and local farms or check out one of the seasonal festivals.

Mount Hood

Oregon’s tallest mountain, Mount Hood, is the volcano looming over the city of Portland. It has the longest ski season in the United States, plus tons of opportunities for hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, and other outdoor activities.

If you’re looking for scenic routes to include on your drive from Seattle to Crater Lake, the Mount Hood Scenic Byway should be top of your list. It’s a great drive to do along with the Columbia River Highway since combining the two will take you on a full loop starting and ending in Portland.

During the summer, hiking is one of the most popular activities on the mountain, and there is a good combination of easy trails which are appropriate for kids and families, as well as more difficult routes that are better for experienced hikers.

The 2-mile Old Salmon River Trail is one of the best hikes for families and is an easy path to take through the old-growth forests along the river, where you’ll find places to swim in the summer (the water will be cold!).

Bend

If you decide to drive through the Columbia River Gorge and continue south through Mount Hood National Forest, Bend is the next convenient stop to make on a Seattle to Crater Lake road trip.

Known for its nature and outdoor activities, Bend combines a fun cultural scene with stunning outdoor scenery.

With numerous award-winning restaurants, you should at least plan to stop for a meal as you head south to Crater Lake. If you have more time to explore the city, shop at the fun boutiques in the central area of the city or check out the Downtown Bend First Friday Art Walk, which takes place on the first Friday of each month in the summer.

There are endless options for outdoor adventures near Bend, whether you’re looking for a quick afternoon stop or hoping to camp somewhere for a few nights.

About 20 miles outside of the city, Tumalo Falls is an 89-foot waterfall that is easily accessible by driving to the base of the falls, or you can pick one of the hiking trails if you’d prefer to be outside longer.

During the summer, tubing on the Deschutes River is a popular activity. There are plenty of outdoor gear shops where you can rent equipment as well as catch a ride on one of the shuttle buses to be conveniently dropped off at an access point to float down the lazy, winding river.

Eugene

If you decide to keep traveling straight south from Portland, then it makes sense to plan for a stop in Eugene. The city is about halfway between Portland and Crater Lake, perfect for a lunch break if you’re in a rush or to spend a night or two, giving you time to check out the city.

Eugene has continuously ranked among the top cities in Oregon and has a picturesque location on the Willamette River. During the summer, rafting, kayaking, and swimming on the river are all popular activities to cool off during hot afternoons.

Take in the scenery at Skinner Butte Park, with excellent hiking trails, panoramic views of the city, and fascinating rock formations which attract rock climbers from around the state.

Kids will enjoy visiting the Cascades Raptor Center, which is home to a variety of falcons, hawks, and other birds of prey. Interactive workshops and handler demonstrations with the birds make it a great learning experience for people of all ages.

Crater Lake National Park

Crater Lake itself is the star of the show at this National Park. It’s the deepest lake in the United States and is known for its characteristic pristine blue water. It is possible to swim in the lake, but even on the hottest summer afternoons, the water will be very cold!

The park has over 90 miles of trails, including the stunning (but challenging) Cleetwood Cove Trail or the easier Plaikni Falls Trail, which brings you to one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the park.

Every visitor traveling to Crater Lake should include the Rim Drive in their trip itinerary. As you might guess from the name, the Rim Drive travels the entire circumference of the lake and offers numerous viewpoints where you can stop for pictures or access trails.

Once you’ve seen the lake from above, you can take a boat tour out onto the middle of the lake for a new perspective. Keep in mind that the only way to get to the shore of the lake is by hiking a trail with steep switchbacks, so this might not be the best option for inexperienced hikers or young children.

Parts of Crater Lake National Park will always close during winter, including popular scenic routes like the Rim Drive. Other areas remain open but are still subject to closure depending on weather conditions.

Make sure you pack for all types of weather, especially rain! Although other parts of the Pacific Northwest aren’t as notoriously rainy as Seattle, you’re still likely to encounter some showers during your trip.

To avoid disappointment, always make reservations for activities and accommodation in advance for a road trip from Seattle to Crater Lake.

Distance From Yosemite To Lake Tahoe

A non-stop route from Yosemite National Park to Lake Tahoe totals about 235 miles. This route takes CA-120 W to CA-4 E. Follow this path, then turn onto CA-49 N, continuing on this road until you hit CA-193 W and then hit US-50 E to Lake Tahoe. 

Our recommended scenic route, with stops at some of the top attractions and activities, spans 287 miles. On the scenic route, leaving Yosemite National Park:

• Take CA-120 until you reach the Rainbow Pool.
• Follow CA-120, then take a slight right onto CA-49 N to Jamestown Road to find Columbia State Historic Park.
• Leaving the park, use Parrotts Ferry Road to turn right onto CA-4 W, continuing along the path to find Calaveras Big Trees State Park.
• For the next attraction, head down CA-4 W to CA-49 N to merge onto CA-88 E, then onto Pine Grove Volcano Road to Black Chasm Cavern National Monument.
• Follow Pine Grove Volcano Road back out of the national monument to Ridge Road, drive the path to turn right onto CA-49 N to CA-16 W, then turn right onto Latrobe Road to reach Empire Ranch Road to Auburn Folsom Road to Newcastle Lavender Farms.
• Next, use Auburn Folsom Road to get onto I-80 E to find Donner Memorial State Park.
• And then, finally, leave the park and follow CA-89 S to end the road trip at Lake Tahoe. 

How Long Do I Need If Driving Yosemite To Lake Tahoe?

With mountainous driving, the non-stop route from inside Yosemite to South Lake Tahoe takes around 4 hours to reach the end destination. Plus, we recommend taking at least two days to experience Lake Tahoe to get the most out of this fabulous family lake vacation trip. 

For the scenic route, stopping at the recommended attractions, it takes around six and a half hours to complete. Therefore, to enjoy each attraction and activity to the fullest on the scenic route, we advise taking at least four days to visit each. 

Note that with seasonal road closures, the route will take longer in winter.

Best Time Of Year To Drive From Yosemite To Lake Tahoe

If you’re trying to avoid the crowds at Yosemite National Park and Lake Tahoe, the best time of year to visit is March to May and September. These months are less crowded than the summer months of June, July, and August.

Of course, the summer months are also an excellent time to take a Yosemite to Lake Tahoe road trip. Just be prepared to experience more people at these top attractions and a lot more time crawling along than driving. 

Best Stops On A Yosemite To Lake Tahoe Road Trip

Yosemite National Park

Touted as one of the world’s most iconic and best climbing spots, Yosemite National Park is a hot spot for rock climbers. They travel from all across the globe to take on numerous challenges, including Half Dome and El Capitan.

The wall of El Capital is the largest continuous wall in the U.S. and a mecca for rock climbers. Yosemite National Park presents opportunities for beginners to safely try rock climbing in the park, thanks to the Yosemite Mountaineering School!

Another popular attraction at Yosemite National Park is Tuolumne Meadows, a scenic meadow along the Tuolumne River. It has one of the highest-elevation meadows in the Sierra Nevada range, drawing in visitors to picnic and stroll through the meadow while basking in the rugged mountain backdrop.

Climbers should be aware of the summer lottery system for using the Half Dome Cables. Late snowfall this year (2023) may delay opening.

Rainbow Pools, Stanislaus National Forest, Groveland

Natural swimming holes, the Rainbow Pools are a part of the Stanislaus National Forest and Tuolumne River east of Groveland. This spot is popular for swimming, picnicking, hiking, fishing, and simply relaxing in the glorious scenery!

The large natural pools, sometimes called Rainbow Falls, are a well-known swimming hole featuring a small waterfall. The Rainbow Pools attract families, friends, tourists, and locals alike to dip in the water. 

No hike is required to reach the swimming hole as it is situated near the parking lot and is free to access. There is a picnic area with tables, restrooms, and other spots to set up to bathe in the sun or enjoy a picnic with the family surrounded by the scenic Rainbow Pools.

Columbia State Historic Park, Columbia

A National Historic Landmark District, Columbia State Historic Park is also called Columbia Historic District, as it encompasses and preserves the historic downtown area of Columbia, California. Nearly 30 buildings are included in the historic park and district, all constructed during the legendary California Gold Rush.

Previously known as the “Gem of the Southern Mines,” Columbia, California, more than one billion dollars in gold (today’s value, not the value back then!) was mined in this area. And while other mining towns were abandoned to the fate of becoming ghost towns, Columbia remained standing, never fully abandoned.

Because of this, Columbia State Historic Park can dedicatedly preserve the historic gold rush town to personify and image to visitors what a California gold rush mining town would look like back in the day! 

Visit a historic saloon. Watch a performance at the Fallon Theatre. Ride a stagecoach. Take a photograph dressing up in old fashion clothes with the family. There’s so much to do and see at Columbia State Historic Park!

Calaveras Big Trees State Park

Black Chasm Cavern National Natural Landmark

Skiing enthusiasts can glimpse some of the area’s greatest vistas of the mountains and snow-covered regions around them as they go down the slopes.

Even if you’re a beginner, there are several ski slopes and lodges where you can try out your skills. Many provide specialized lessons based on your skill level, ensuring that you can develop your skills.

A few of the best family ski resorts around Lake Tahoe are:

• Northstar California Resort (North Lake Tahoe) – can teach children from as young as 3 years old and have class sizes of no more than four, along with the popular Kids Adventure Zone. • Palisades Tahoe (previously Squaw Valley Ski Resort – North Lake Tahoe) – One of the best all-rounder resorts – and most luxurious – with 6,000 acres of skiable area, they have a highly acclaimed ski school on offer and plenty of winter activities off the slopes too. • Diamond Peak Ski Resort (North Lake Tahoe) – A great choice for beginners, the ski school here is considerably cheaper than some of the larger resorts starting from 3-year-olds, plus they offer “kids ski free” packages for under 6’s and interchangeable parent passes.

• Heavenly Mountain Resort (South Lake Tahoe) – Lots of intermediate runs make the slopes here great for families that want to ski together. If you still require daycare, Heavenly’s can take your bub from as young as 2 months! For 3 to 4-year-olds they also offer a ski-play program whilst proper ski lessons start from 4 years old, snowboarding from 5 years old. (Also part of Epic Pass program)

• Sierra-at-Tahoe (North Lake Tahoe) – if its fewer crowds and more affordable accommodation you want, this could be your best choice. Enjoy 11 acres of beginners’ terrain with lessons from 4 years+ or cubbies as part of their daycare program from 3+. Daycare starts at 18 months old.

Those who want to try their hand at cross-country skiing will not be disappointed either. Try Tahoe Donner Cross Country Ski Center (who offers youth programs) or Royal Gorge with 27 beginner trails.

2. Slip on Your Ice Skates in Lake Tahoe

You can go ice skating in Lake Tahoe in a few different places. Some good places for family fun are the resorts with ice skating rinks. You can learn to skate or show off your moves at several locations. Some top family-friendly choices include:

• Palisades Tahoe – take the aerial tram up to High Camp and go for a stroll around the Olympic Ice Pavilion. You’ll be able to skate on one of California’s most well-known ice rinks, as well as enjoy one of California’s most beautiful mountain vistas.

• Northstar California Resort also offers a skating rink during the winter months. The ice-skating rink is free, so bring your own skates or take advantage of their reasonably priced rental service.

3. Take a Snowmobile Tour in Lake Tahoe

Take to the snow on a snowmobile for an experience of a lifetime. Many snowmobile excursions pass through Nevada’s National Forest, allowing you to enjoy some of Lake Tahoe’s finest sights.

From November to April, this is one of the most exhilarating ways to explore Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Mountains. Why not try:

• Zephyr Cove Resort – home to over 45 miles of snowmobile trails, this is one of the most popular locations for snowmobile excursions. Salt Lake City, Utah’s capital and largest city, nestled between the Great Salt Lake and the Wasatch Mountains, has plenty of activities for all the family to enjoy.

Far more than just a stopping point on your way to Utah’s “big 5” or Salt Lake Valley ski resorts, make some time in your itinerary to check out all there is to see and do in Salt Lake City before you hit the road.

Here we’re going to share our top 12 Salt Lake City attractions to pencil into your itinerary that are lots of fun for the kids, educational and well-suited to a family-friendly road trip itinerary through Utah.

1. Loveland Living Planet Aquarium

You wouldn’t expect a desert state to have an aquarium, but right here in Salt Lake City, you’ll find a brilliant example in the suburb of Draper.

Loveland Living Planet Aquarium is small but an excellent education center for families that may not otherwise get to visit the ocean.

There is a large touching pool, where kids can touch stingrays, as well as a learning center where children touch hermit crabs, starfish, and the like. The displays are of the same quality you’d expect in aquariums across the country.

2. Discovery Gateway Children’s Museum

An amazing kids’ museum full of hands-on exhibits, you’re bound to find something here to suit tots through to tweens at Discovery Gateway Children’s Museum.

Open Daily (except Tuesdays), there’s an extensive range of interactive permanent exhibits, as well as temporary exhibits and an events program to enjoy. With over 60,000 square feet of play space, it’s a great way to spend a hot or rainy day in Salt Lake City with kids!

3. Clark Planetarium

Another fabulous interactive indoor discovery center the kids will love is the Clark Planetarium. Kids will get a hands-on opportunity to learn about Earth, the moon, and space weather. The Restless Planet Exhibit is a favorite, allowing you to stand inside a tornado and watch a lightning strike, or why not pilot a Rover on Mars?

The great thing about the Clark Planetarium is it’s free to enter! There are ticketed shows at the Imax Theater and Hensen Dome, but many of the fun exhibits won’t cost you a cent, making it an awesome free thing to do with kids in Salt Lake City.

4. Hogle Zoo

The classic children’s attraction in SLC is Hogle Zoo. It might not be the country’s greatest zoo, but it makes for an entertaining afternoon. Kids love it, and parents will love it, too, because it is not as spread out and exhausting as many zoos you may have been to.

5. Tour the Utah State Capitol Building

An unmissable part of Salt Lake City’s skyline, did you know you can tour the Capitol building for free?

You just need to check in with the Visitor Services Center for self-guided and docent-led guided tours. Your tour will cover Utah history, governance, and the Utah State Capitol building history and architecture. (Top Tip: print out a kids scavenger hunt online before you go to help keep them engaged!)

If the kids really don’t have the patience for a tour, simply enjoy the expansive lawns and outdoor monuments.

6. Great Salt Lake State Park

It isn’t hard to find parks of different sizes in Salt Lake City, Utah. However, there are several notable favorites that are worth taking the time to go see that are either free or very low cost.

There is no better way to get to know the Great Salt Lake than by exploring the Great Salt Lake State Park. Admission is $2 per carload; all occupants of the vehicle are free of charge. It is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily all year round.

This park offers a great view of the Great Salt Lake and has nice children-friendly trails, picnic areas, and campgrounds, and is nearby to great eating spots. Swimming is allowed, but the water is extremely salty.

7. This is the Place Heritage Park

This is the Place Heritage Park is another popular park family attraction in Salt Lake City. The park is full of history involving Brigham Young and Utah’s Pioneer Day, which is held on the 24th of July yearly.

It’s a great place for kids to learn an important part of Utah History. Explore the historic village and learn about the pioneer era with actors bringing stories to life; pan for gemstones to learn about Utah’s mining past and enjoy a ceremonial dance by Native American performers.

Your journey continues around the park outside. Kids can enjoy endless mini train rides or pony rides and a petting corral. In the summer, there’s the irrigation station splash park to cool off. Admission rates depend on the day and season.

8. Sugar House Park

Sugar House Park is another of Salt Lake City’s favorites. It is one of the most attractive parks with much to offer to its visitors, including nice trails and a creek that runs through the park.

It is located at 1300 E 2100 S. Admission is free, and it is open daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. in the months of April through October. It is open daily from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the months of November through March.

9. Liberty Park

A wonderful outdoor space, over 100 acres of parkland are here to be explored. In addition to plenty of walking paths, and a splash pad in summer, there’s a playground for smaller kids and one especially for older kids too, so pack a picnic and spend the day!

Within the park, you’ll also find Tracy Aviary and Botanical Garden. In addition to over 8 acres of gardens and exhibits, they have live daily keeper talks – you can check out the schedule on their website in advance to time your trip.

10. Canyon Rim Park

Canyon Rim Park is also wonderful to take your kids out for fresh air. There is lots of space for kids to play and for dog walking, also nice playgrounds. This park has horseshoe courts, two pavilions, and several other fun amenities for you and your family to enjoy.

It is located at 3100 S 3100 E. Admission is free and open daily from dawn until dusk.

11. The Tabernacle & Mormon Church Office Building Tour

One of the most popular tourist attractions in Salt Lake City is touring Temple Square and the Tabernacle.

You can tour this amazing religious building for free. You can sit in for free if the choir is rehearsing or giving a recital. If you are interested in watching the choir perform, then you will want to visit the Tabernacle on a Sunday when their normal morning performances are delivered.

The Mormon Church Office Building can be found at 50 East North Temple Street. This tour will show you around not only Temple Square, the fabulous artwork inside the building and take you to the observation platform on the 26th floor.

This is a great vantage point for taking photographs of the Salt Lake City cityscape and natural landscape.

12. Utah Olympic Park in Park City

Last but not least, have kids that love sports and outdoor activities? Then you must make a stop in at Utah Olympic Park.

Built for the 2002 Olympics, explore the free Olympic Museum first, then let the kids loose in the Discovery Zone. Test their agility and skills on the ropes course, zip line, and bobsled – open year-round.

There are literally hundreds of restaurants to choose from in Salt Lake City. Some local favorites to try with the kids include:

• Blue Iguana (Mexican on West Temple)
• Eight Settlers Distillery (Complete with a kids menu, open daily in Cottonwood Heights)
• Carson Kitchen (Burgers in a contemporary bar setting in Downtown)

Salt Lake City is known for its great skiing, its Mormon residents, and its amazing history. If you plan a vacation to this western city, take some time to tour its attractions. Many of the attractions in Salt Lake City, even the most famous ones, are free of charge.
