There’s no doubt about it – the Oregon Coast has just about the most gorgeous shoreline in the country. So, it’s no wonder that taking an Oregon Coast vacation by driving the Pacific Coast Highway is an excellent idea.

1. Astoria

There’s no better place to start your epic Oregon Coast vacation than Astoria. As the first town in the state, it holds great historical significance. But more importantly, it’s the perfect place to visit with kids.  

Go for a ride on the Astoria Riverfront Trolley. Everyone in the family will love riding the historic trolley along the southern bank of the Columbia River. It’s only $1 to board and travels about 3 miles. 

A totally different way to see the city is to climb The Astoria Column. Modeled after the historic Trajan’s Column in Rome, the Astoria Column was built in 1926, showing images of Astoria’s history. Today, you can climb all 164 steps to get a 360-degree view high above it all. Visiting and climbing the column is free, but you will need to pay for parking.

Both Fort Clatsop National Monument and Lewis and Clark National Historical Park are great ways to bring history books to life. Kids will love walking around the encampment that Lewis and Clark established when they reached the west coast. 

There’s no better place in Oregon for kids than the Columbia River Maritime Museum. They’ll love learning all about seafaring vessels and shipwrecks in particular. It’s only $5 for kids and free for those 5 and under.

Pro Tip: Kids and kids-at-heart who love the 80s movie The Goonies, consider visiting in early June. Astoria (the setting of the film) celebrates Goonies Day each June 7th with special events and even a showing of the movie in the Columbian Theatre– a super cool activity to do with your kids on the Oregon Coastal road trip.

2. Warrenton

Okay, so Warrenton is super close to Astoria (just across Youngs Bay to the west), but it’s such a great place that we had to give it its own spot on this list of things to do when driving the Oregon Coast with kids. 

A must-do in Warrenton is visiting Fort Stevens State Park. Kids and adults will love checking out a real shipwreck Wreck of the Peter Iredale, walking the beach, hiking any of the 15 miles of trails, checking out Historic For Stevens, and kayaking in the Trestle Bay. 

For family fun that gets your blood pumping, head to High Life Zipline Park. You’ll be soaring through the trees – a completely different way to appreciate the Oregon Coast with kids.

Pro Tip: Fort Stevens Park offers year-round camping, including RV hookups, making it the ideal place to stay on your Oregon Coastal road trip.

3. Seaside

Heading down the Oregon Coast, the next no-brainer stop is Seaside. It’s just over 12 miles south of Warrenton, making it a short drive down the Oregon Coastal Highway.

Seaside is one of the best places to find things to do on the Oregon coast with kids. Catering to families, you’ll find tons of restaurants, ice cream shops, and arcades. Don’t miss walking the Seaside Promenade, riding the carousel, and visiting the Seaside Aquarium. 

Pro Tip:  Since it’s so close to Warrenton, you could choose to stay in either place and easily visit the other. As a major destination, you’ll find tons of places to stay in Seaside, like Seaside Thousand Trails.

4. Cannon Beach

On the road again, the next stop on this epic Oregon Coast road trip, Cannon Beach, is only 8 miles down the coast from Seaside and one of the best places to visit on the Oregon Coast.

With its iconic Haystack Rock and Sea Stacks on the shoreline, you’ll recognize this special place right away. Maybe the kids won’t recognize it from movies like The Goonies and Kindergarten Cop, but the grownups definitely will. 

Make sure to visit the beach during low tide. It’s the best time to walk out to the rock and see it up close. Kids will love finding sea creatures in the tidepools, too. Keep an eye out for puffins that call Haystack Rock home during the spring and summer months. No wonder Cannon Beach is one of the best Oregon beaches for families. 

Just north of Cannon Beach is Ecola State Park, one of the best places to visit on the Oregon Coast. Running along the shore for 9 miles, the park has tons of hiking trails with beautiful views of the Pacific.

5. Manzanita

Heading south from Cannon Bay on the 101, you’ll be in two more of the beautiful state parks that line the Oregon coastline: Arcadia Beach State Recreation Site and Oswald West State Park.

Arcadia is the perfect place to have a picnic, walk along the beach, and go tide-pooling. Unlike its neighbor up the Oregon coastline, Oswald West feels a bit more like you’re on an adventure, walking through a temperate rainforest and onto a secluded beach. 

Once you’ve enjoyed the parks, it’s on to Manzanita and Nehalem Bay. Seven miles of sandy beach means there’s tons of beachcombing to do.

6. Tillamook

Heading inland just slightly, a great place to spend some time on the Oregon Coast drive with kids is Tillamook. 

Visiting the Tillamook Air Museum is a great activity for families with little ones who like planes. 

For some of the most delicious ice cream and cheese, make sure to spend some time in the House that Cheddar Built – Tillamook Creamery. Your taste buds will thank you.

If you’re planning to drive the Oregon Coast in the fall, definitely visit The Hydrangea Ranch. There’s plenty of harvest fun where you can pick a pumpkin from the patch, go on a hay ride, and get lost in the largest corn maze in Oregon. 

Another super cool thing to do is to take the kids on the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad. Now you won’t be traveling the entire Oregon coastline, but a 90 minute ride on a historic steam engine could be the ride of a lifetime for your family.

Pro Tip:  If you’re a family that loves exploring the beach, then you’ll love Oceanside just to the west of Tillamook. The best place to head is the Oceanside Beach State Recreation Site.

7. Neskowin Beach

On the way to the next stop of Neskowin Beach, make sure to stop at Cape Kiwanda Sand Dunes in Pacific City. Here, you’ll love climbing to the top of the enormous dune for a gorgeous coastline view. You may even spot historic Dory fishing boats in the water. If you’re driving the Oregon Coast with kids in July, check out Dory Days Festival Weekend.

The next must-stop on the Pacific Coast Highway is Neskowin Beach. Specifically, Neskowin Ghost Forest is a super cool place to visit if you’re into things that are a bit more on the creepy side. The Ghost Forest are the trunks of ancient trees that were buried thousands of years ago and have only been brought to the surface in recent years. So, although this isn’t a spooky ghost story feel, it can be a great discussion topic for kids who are studying history and science. 

Neskowin Beach also has great tidepools and warmer water than others, making it one of the best beaches to visit the Oregon Coast with kids. 

Pro Tip:  Neskowin Beach RV Resort is a solid choice when looking for a place to stay in the area. They also have cabins to rent if you’re not making the Oregon Coast drive in a house on wheels.

8. Depoe Bay

One of the biggest draws of visitors to the Oregon coastline is whale watching. And there’s no better place to do it than in Depoe Bay.

Although it may be difficult for most of us to figure out which whales are in the area and which are on the move, the OPRD Whale Watching Center is ready to help. They’ll answer all of your questions and even help you spot the Grey, Humpback, or Orca. 

Don’t miss seeing the Devil’s Punch Bowl just south of Depoe Bay. The powerful sea smashing into the rocky coast created this amazing rock formation. It’s super cool to check out any time, but during the winter months, the agitated, energetic sea makes the bowl super active.  

Pro Tip: Remember to bring our binoculars.  If you forgot to bring your binoculars on your Oregon Coastal road trip, don’t worry! The Whale Watching Center has some to borrow.

9. Newport

About 133 miles from the start of the trip in Astoria, the next major stop on the Oregon Coast drive itinerary is Newport. 

The major claim to fame is that Newport is the home to the Oregon Coast Aquarium, a favorite among Oregon Coast vacations. The whole family will love learning about life under the sea and walking through underwater tunnels, giving a different perspective. Jellyfish and Octopus encounters are a super fun experience kids love but are an extra expense.

Lucky for us, the Oregon Coast Aquarium is open daily and offers discounts for seniors, young adults, and kids, and is free for 0-2 years old.

Beyond the aquarium, Newport is a great place to stop when driving the Oregon Coast with kids. You’ll definitely be drawn to the Bayfront with all of its places to eat and shop. It’s also a great place to see the local sea lions. Let the kids run, climb, and play at Coast Park, a large playground area. 

Pro Tip:  Just south of Newport is Seal Rock State Recreation Site, which is a great place to see rock formations, go tide-pooling, and see sea lions and seals.

10. Florence

Seeing the wildlife on the Oregon Coast is one of the biggest draws to vacationing here. But sometimes, it’s hard for kids to know where to look. A perfect solution is visiting the Sea Lion Caves. As they say, it’s not a zoo, but there’s a good chance of seeing sea lions. So, hey, why not check it out? 

If you have kids into fairies, gnomes, or enchanted forests, go for a hike on the Hobbit Trail in Florence. At the trail’s end, you’ll be on the secluded Hobbit Beach, but it feels like you’re journeying into a magical place along the Oregon Coast.

For a totally awesome experience when driving the Oregon Coast with kids, hit the dunes. Sandboarding is all the rage at Sand Masters Park. You and the kids can rent a board for the day or take a lesson to learn the moves. Either way, you’ll have a blast. They’re open all week April–December but only Thursday through Sunday in the off-season.

Pro Tip: Places in Florence are RV-friendly. Specifically, most places have enough parking for RVs, which is nice to see.

11. Siuslaw National Forest

Make sure to put Oregon Dunes National Recreation Center in the Siuslaw National Forest on your Oregon Coast drive itinerary. You’ll love all of the family-friendly activities within the park, like hiking the Sweet Creek Falls trail, which is only 1.1 miles but passes 11 waterfalls.

Kids and grownups alike can be Citizen Scientists in the park, too. The Agents of Discovery app is a whole new way for kids to engage with the nature around them in Cape Perpetua. Tahkenitch Area is the best place to go kayaking with kids, too. 

Just south of Siuslaw National Forest is Coos Bay, one of the largest towns on Oregon’s Coast. It’s nice to take a short stroll on the Coos Bay Boardwalk and learn about the town’s development and the importance of logging in the area.

Pro Tip:  Carter Lake Campground in the Oregon Dunes Recreation Area is a favorite place for families to camp.

12. Brookings

We’ve made it! After traveling 338 miles down the Pacific Coast Highway, the final destination on this Oregon Coast road trip with kids is family-friendly Brookings. It’s here that you’ll find a number of the best Southern Oregon Coast attractions. 

Azalea Park is a favorite destination with locals and visitors. Kids (and kids-at-heart) will love playing disc golf, horseshoes, and playing on the large playground. The gardens in Azalea Park are a delight and are celebrated with the Azalea Festival every Memorial Day Weekend. If you’re in Brookings in the summer, check out life music at the American Music Festival in the park. In winter, it’s all about Nature’s Coastal Holiday Festival of Lights. 

Don’t miss spending time in Harris Beach State Park. With tidepools, soft sands, and gorgeous views, it’s definitely one of the best Oregon beaches for families. 

The Port of Brookings Harbor Boardwalk is the best place to bring the kids for seafood dinners and ice cream desserts. During the summer and early fall, it’s also the home to Saturday Markets at the Port featuring vendors and live music.

Pro Tip:  Harris Beach State Park is the perfect place to stay the night when visiting the Southern Oregon Coast. With RV hookups, tent sites, and yurts, you’re likely to find a type of camping that’s right for you.

The pristine blue waters of Crater Lake make it one of the most picture-perfect regions on the US west coast. If you’re planning a Seattle to Crater Lake road trip, it’s important to realize that the journey will be just as good as the final destination.

You’ll be passing through some of the most beautiful areas of the Pacific Northwest and have opportunities to stop in Portland, the Columbia River Gorge, and other top travel sites.

In this guide, we’ll cover the logistics of a drive from Seattle to Crater Lake so you can plan an epic road trip of river rafting and mountain climbing!

Distance from Seattle to Crater Lake

The most direct distance from Seattle to Crater Lake is about 400 miles. To make the most of your road trip in the Pacific Northwest, you can take a more scenic route as you drive from Seattle to Crater Lake, including stops at places like Bend or side trips to visit Mount Hood and other natural parks.

This means the drive will be closer to 450 miles or possibly a bit longer, depending on how many side trips you add on.

How is the Drive From Seattle to Crater Lake?

Driving non-stop from Seattle to Crater Lake would take between 7 and 8 hours, depending on the traffic. However, there’s no reason to torture yourself with that much time behind the wheel, particularly when there are so many beautiful places to explore.

Planning for at least three days of driving will give you enough time to stop at parks and cities along the way, but you could easily take a week driving from Seattle to Crater Lake if you’re hoping to make multiple stops.

Best Time of Year to Drive from Seattle to Crater Lake

June through September are the months with the best weather for a drive from Seattle to Crater Lake. Keep in mind that Crater Lake is one of the snowiest places in the United States-often winters will bring an average of 43 feet of snow! This can make driving conditions difficult, if not impossible.

The shoulder seasons of spring and fall are also doable, but you’re still likely to come across lingering snow drifts in spring or early snowstorms in fall.

Best Stops on a Seattle to Crater Lake Road Trip

From cascading waterfalls to snowy mountain peaks, the number of places to stop on the scenic drive to Crater Lake from Seattle is endless! Below are some of the best places to visit so you can plan your time as you make your way through the wonders of the Pacific Northwest.

Snoqualmie Falls

Don’t get too comfortable driving as you leave Seattle. The first place worth stopping on your drive to Crater Lake from Seattle is just 30 minutes or so outside of the city.

Snoqualmie Falls plummets a jaw-dropping 270 feet and is considered one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the state of Washington.

The viewing platform from the top of the falls is very close to the parking area, but it’s also worth your time to explore some of the other trails. There’s a short hiking trail to reach the bottom of the falls (just be prepared for the climb back up), and the surrounding area has other trails through the forest.

If you’re already hungry, there’s also a picnic area where you can have lunch or a quick snack break before you keep driving.

Mount Rainier National Park

Any road trip in Washington should include a visit to the popular Mount Rainier National Park. It would be easy to spend a week or more at Mount Rainier, but at the very least, you can stop for the afternoon to check out some of the top hiking trails like Skyline Trail or Mount Fremont Lookout.

The first segment of the Skyline Trail to reach the spectacular Myrtle Falls is particularly family-friendly since it’s on a paved path. From there you can decide if you want to continue to the more difficult parts of the trail.

Mount Rainier also has a lot of scenic drives, so you don’t necessarily need to get out of your car much to see some of the best areas of the park.

Paradise and Sunrise are two of the best places to drive in Mount Rainier, although be prepared for lots of traffic and tourists, especially during the summer months.

If you want to spend more time at Mount Rainier, there are lots of campgrounds and lodges in and around the park, but make sure you reserve a place well in advance since spots fill up quickly.

Portland

Portland is about 3 hours south of Seattle, and it makes a good midway point for a drive from Seattle to Crater Lake. Spending a night or two in the city will give you more time to explore the fun cultural attractions as well as some of the nearby natural wonders.

Full of quirky eateries, beautiful parks, and cool museums, Portland has something every traveler will enjoy. On rainy days there are plenty of indoor activities like the Portland Art Museum, which has over 45,000 works of art on display. Another good indoor activity is browsing for books at the famous Powell’s City of Books, the world’s largest independent bookstore.

If the sun is shining, explore the International Rose Test Garden, where over 650 types of roses from around the world are grown. Forest Park is another popular outdoor place to visit and covers 5,200 acres with trails along the river and through the forest.

Kids will enjoy picking up a treat at Voodoo Doughnuts, a bakery famous for its homemade artisan doughnuts of unique flavors bigger than your head!

Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area

The Columbia River Gorge is one of the top natural attractions near Portland. If you have time to spare on your road trip from Seattle to Crater Lake, an afternoon (or even a day or two) exploring the gorge is a great stop to include.

With over 90 waterfalls, endless hiking and mountain biking trails, and water sports like kayaking and swimming, the gorge is a perfect place for outdoor enthusiasts to visit.

Make sure you have your camera along to get photos of some of the most picturesque waterfalls, like Bridal Veil and Multnomah Falls (the tallest waterfall in Oregon!).

Crown Point is another popular spot for photographers; located right along the Columbia River Highway, the point has a spectacular panoramic view of the gorge, plus the cool Vista House which has a museum and gift shop.

Another excellent drive in the gorge area is called the Fruit Loop. For over 30 miles, the charming country lane winds through the apple and pear orchards along the Columbia River, and there are plenty of places to stop to visit wineries and local farms or check out one of the seasonal festivals.

Mount Hood

Oregon’s tallest mountain, Mount Hood, is the volcano looming over the city of Portland. It has the longest ski season in the United States, plus tons of opportunities for hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, and other outdoor activities.

If you’re looking for scenic routes to include on your drive from Seattle to Crater Lake, the Mount Hood Scenic Byway should be top of your list. It’s a great drive to do along with the Columbia River Highway since combining the two will take you on a full loop starting and ending in Portland.

During the summer, hiking is one of the most popular activities on the mountain, and there is a good combination of easy trails which are appropriate for kids and families, as well as more difficult routes that are better for experienced hikers.

The 2-mile Old Salmon River Trail is one of the best hikes for families and is an easy path to take through the old-growth forests along the river, where you’ll find places to swim in the summer (the water will be cold!).

Bend

If you decide to drive through the Columbia River Gorge and continue south through Mount Hood National Forest, Bend is the next convenient stop to make on a Seattle to Crater Lake road trip.

Known for its nature and outdoor activities, Bend combines a fun cultural scene with stunning outdoor scenery.

With numerous award-winning restaurants, you should at least plan to stop for a meal as you head south to Crater Lake. If you have more time to explore the city, shop at the fun boutiques in the central area of the city or check out the Downtown Bend First Friday Art Walk, which takes place on the first Friday of each month in the summer.

There are endless options for outdoor adventures near Bend, whether you’re looking for a quick afternoon stop or hoping to camp somewhere for a few nights.

About 20 miles outside of the city, Tumalo Falls is an 89-foot waterfall that is easily accessible by driving to the base of the falls, or you can pick one of the hiking trails if you’d prefer to be outside longer.

During the summer, tubing on the Deschutes River is a popular activity. There are plenty of outdoor gear shops where you can rent equipment as well as catch a ride on one of the shuttle buses to be conveniently dropped off at an access point to float down the lazy, winding river.

Eugene

If you decide to keep traveling straight south from Portland, then it makes sense to plan for a stop in Eugene. The city is about halfway between Portland and Crater Lake, perfect for a lunch break if you’re in a rush or to spend a night or two, giving you time to check out the city.

Eugene has continuously ranked among the top cities in Oregon and has a picturesque location on the Willamette River. During the summer, rafting, kayaking, and swimming on the river are all popular activities to cool off during hot afternoons.

Take in the scenery at Skinner Butte Park, with excellent hiking trails, panoramic views of the city, and fascinating rock formations which attract rock climbers from around the state.

There are plenty of museums worth visiting, like the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, and the Eugene Oregon Museum of Natural and Cultural History, which has a huge meteorite on display.

Kids will enjoy visiting the Cascades Raptor Center, which is home to a variety of falcons, hawks, and other birds of prey. Interactive workshops and handler demonstrations with the birds make it a great learning experience for people of all ages.

Crater Lake National Park

Crater Lake itself is the star of the show at this National Park. It’s the deepest lake in the United States and is known for its characteristic pristine blue water. It is possible to swim in the lake, but even on the hottest summer afternoons, the water will be very cold!

The park has over 90 miles of trails, including the stunning (but challenging) Cleetwood Cove Trail or the easier Plaikni Falls Trail, which brings you to one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the park.

Every visitor traveling to Crater Lake should include the Rim Drive in their trip itinerary. As you might guess from the name, the Rim Drive travels the entire circumference of the lake and offers numerous viewpoints where you can stop for pictures or access trails.

Once you’ve seen the lake from above, you can take a boat tour out onto the middle of the lake for a new perspective. Keep in mind that the only way to get to the shore of the lake is by hiking a trail with steep switchbacks, so this might not be the best option for inexperienced hikers or young children.

More Tips for Road Tripping from Seattle to Crater Lake

Parts of Crater Lake National Park will always close during winter, including popular scenic routes like the Rim Drive. Other areas remain open but are still subject to closure depending on weather conditions.

Make sure you pack for all types of weather, especially rain! Although other parts of the Pacific Northwest aren’t as notoriously rainy as Seattle, you’re still likely to encounter some showers during your trip.

To avoid disappointment, always make reservations for activities and accommodation in advance for a road trip from Seattle to Crater Lake.

How Long Do I Need For The Vancouver To San Francisco Road Trip?

The distance from Vancouver to San Francisco is approximately 800 miles (1,285 kilometers) if taking the inland route on I-5. The journey takes about 16 hours of driving time, depending on how often you stop along the way and if you encounter any traffic. Be prepared that this route does include some tolls.

This drive is best split into 3 days of driving with 5 hours each day. This way, you can have plenty of time to explore lots of unique attractions along the route.

An alternate option is taking the longer coastal route on 101/Highway 1, allowing you to explore Olympic National Park, Oregon Coast, and the Redwoods.

US Highway 101, known as the Pacific Coast Highway, is one of the most scenic roads in the world. The route along the coastline is less busy than the shooter route. The coastal route takes up to 23 hours and is 1,165 miles (1,875 kilometers). 

We suggest you take 10-14 days to truly experience and explore the areas between Vancouver and San Francisco, as the worst feeling on a road trip is being rushed.

Best Time Of Year To Go From Vancouver To San Francisco by Car

Road trips can be quite an exciting journey, especially if you have nice weather, so the best time to visit the west coast of North America is in the Spring until Fall, so from May to October.

Be prepared that San Francisco and Vancouver often have rain, mist, and cooler temperatures than other parts of North America, even in the summer.

The best weather all year is in July-August; however, this is the high tourist season, so the cost of lodging and attractions are often much higher, and places are much busier. Unfortunately, June can often be gloomy, wet, and cool, with lots of fog, making it hard to see landmarks clearly.

If you have the flexibility in your schedule, early September is a great time to embark on a road trip along the US West Coast from Canada. This season boasts less traffic and delightful warm temperatures, making it an optimal travel period.

What Do I Need To Cross The Canada/USA Border? 

Overall, a road trip from Vancouver to San Francisco can be an incredible way to explore the natural beauty and unique culture of the West Coast.  It is important that no matter if you choose the inland or coastal route, you bring a passport and any documentation you need as you must cross the border into the United States.

2. A visa: If you are a Canadian citizen, you generally do not need a visa to enter the United States for tourism or business purposes for stays up to 180 days. 
3. Proof of vehicle registration and insurance: You may be asked to provide documentation
4. Answer Questions: Border Patrol will ask a few questions about your trip, such as where you’re going, how long you plan to stay, and what you will be doing while in the United States. If you wish to hire a car (rent), your best option is to take a bus from Vancouver to Seattle, of the Amtrak Cascades, and then get a car from there instead of dealing with the hassles of cross-border car rentals.

The park straddles the border of both countries and is a landmark park that can be found at the Douglas Border Crossing between Surrey, British Columbia, and Blaine, Washington.

The park is home to over 60 acres of beautiful land, where you can visit historical monuments from the War of 1812, the Peace Arch, which can be seen from far away, gardens, picnic areas, walking trails, and lastly, the World Friendship Bell that represents peace and unity between countries.

Seattle, WA

Head south from Vancouver and enjoy the views of mountainous terrain and forests out your window until you arrive in Seattle. Once you arrive in Seattle, you will enjoy the variety of family-friendly activities that will keep the kids busy and entertained and give you an opportunity to take a rest from driving. 

Popular attractions for kids include the Space Needle, which is 605 feet tall and offers an elevator ride to an observation deck that allows 360-degree views of Seattle, Mount Rainier, Puget Sound, and the Olympic and Cascade Mountains. Olympic National Park, WA

The national park has a rich history as it is home to several indigenous communities and contains multiple historic sites, all while offering beautiful scenic views of Washington’s Olympic Peninsula and is one of the most northern located national parks in the United States.

Olympic National Park is home to over 1,400 miles of diverse ecosystems, including the vibrant and lush Hoh Rain Forest, which has beautiful, unique flora and fauna views in this thriving moist environment.

Another unique area of the park is the mountainous area of Hurricane Ridge which offers panoramic views of glacier-capped mountains and the entire Olympic Mountain Range – this makes for a beautiful hike. 

Don’t forget to visit the old-growth forests or the rocky Beaches at Ruby Beach and Rialto Beach that allow visitors to stroll along the beach, search for creatures in tide pools, and simply just listen to the waves crashing against the rocks.

This serene park offers so many beautiful natural locations that it is a must-see along your road trip route.

Willapa National Wildlife Refuge

Visitors will enjoy viewing the diverse range of habitats, including tidal marshes, sand dunes, and old forests that are home to over 250 species of migrating birds, fish, and numerous animals, including bears, otters, and Elk. Kids will enjoy learning more about the history, ecology, and wildlife through educational programs and exhibits in the visitor center.

Located in Washington State, the goal of this wildlife refuge is to conserve habitats for the species located in the park. Willapa National Wildlife Refuge is over 16,000 acres in size and offers visitors a variety of recreation opportunities. While visiting the Wildlife Refuge you can enjoy wildlife sightings, bird watching, hiking, or fishing while enjoying the natural beauty of the area.

The Willapa National Wildlife Refuge property has several cultural and historic sites, including a World War II-era radar station and a historic lighthouse that dates back to 1858. Guided tours of the lighthouse are available during the summer months.

Long Beach

Plan to spend the day and enjoy the long stretches of sandy beaches that Long Beach has to offer to visitors. Located on the western edge of the Olympic Peninsula, Long Beach has fantastic swimming, sunbathing, and kite flying and even has many local stores to purchase kites.  This family-friendly destination has beaches, outdoor activities, museums, and much more to entertain the whole family.

Long Beach holds a yearly kite festival in August and is home to the World Kite Museum. The area is also popular for clam digging, especially if you’re looking for the famous razor clam.

Located nearby are several state parks, such as Cape Disappointment State Park and Lewis and Clark National Historical Park, which offer scenic views along hiking trails while learning about the area’s rich history.

Coos Bay

Located on the southern coast of Oregon, Coos Bay is a must-see spot for Pacific Northwest visitors as it offers many adventurous activities. You can learn more about the history and culture by visiting the Coos Historical and Maritime Museum, which explains the history of indigenous heritage and the past of fishing and timber industries in the area.

For those who enjoy fishing, you should head to the harbor to either take a tour of the harbor or to get adventurous and go deep-sea fishing. For those who enjoy adventure, you will want to check out the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area which allows visitors to experience sand dunes while riding ATV, horseback, or dune buggies.

If you want to relax, you will want to check out one of these beautiful nearby beaches with amazing swimming, sand castle building, sunbathing, and sunsets. Nearby beaches include Sunset Bay State Park, Cape Arago State Park, and Bastendorff Beach.

Oregon Coast Aquarium

Families will love learning about the diversity of marine life found along the Pacific Northwest coast at the Oregon Coast Aquarium located in Newport, Oregon along the coast. Visitors will enjoy learning more about sea otters, harbor seals, sea lions, fish, and octopuses.

You can explore the aquarium, check out the educational programs, or explore behind-the-scenes tours, or enjoy the interactive exhibits as a family. 

A must-see exhibit is the Passages of the Deep tunnel exhibit which allows guests to walk through an underwater tunnel while being surrounded by sharks, rays, and other marine life. You also won’t want to miss the Coastal Waters or Rocky Shores exhibit, as guests will learn all about the conservation and preservation of marine animals and their habitats.

Siuslaw National Forest

Enjoy a journey through Siuslaw National Forest, which boasts 634,000 acres of forests, beaches, rivers, lakes, streams, sand dunes, tide pools, and ocean vistas along the Oregon coastline. There are numerous activities to enjoy in the Siuslaw National Forest, including hiking, cycling, camping, fishing, picnicking, horseback riding, off-roading, and more… making it an outdoor enthusiast’s dream location. 

This vast area is home to a variety of wildlife and features the highest peak in the Oregon Coast Range, Mary’s Peak, which stands at 4097 feet (1249 meters). This is a prominent feature in the Siuslaw National Forest, offering panoramic views of forest, mountains, and coastlines. 

Mary’s Peak has a variety of different trails for visitors to explore, from easy to advanced, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the view. At the summit of Mary’s Peak, there is a restroom, observation tower, and picnic tables allowing guests to take a rest and refuel for the trip back down.

Redwood National & State Parks, OR, WA

This is a must-see destination for nature lovers or those looking to enjoy the peaceful, quiet environment of the iconic redwood forest, home to some of the world’s tallest trees. Redwood National & State Parks is located on the north coast of California, has trees as large as 380 feet tall, and covers an area of almost 140,000 acres.

Visitors to the park will enjoy viewing wildlife, hiking through the forest, camping, and fishing.  Kids will enjoy checking out the Junior Ranger programs, campfire talks, and guided hikes offered by the visitor center. 

You will not want to miss checking out the narrow canyon with walls covered in ferns called Fern Canyon or visiting the largest redwoods in the park in the Lady Bird Johnson Grove.

Golden Gate Bridge

As you reach your end destination, check out the iconic Golden Gate Bridge landmark that spans 4,200 feet and has a length of almost 9,000 feet.

In this run-down of the best stops to make while driving from San Francisco to Seattle, we’ve included places both on the shorter I-5 route and the Pacific Highway. 

Even if you decide to take the I-5 route for the most part, it’s easy to cut across to the coast and then return to the faster inland highway. The Pacific Northwest really is a mix and match of what suits you and how much time you have to spend!

You could always take the I-5 directly up to Seattle then meander your way back with a stop through the Olympic Peninsula and Olympic National Park, then follow our Portland to San Francisco itinerary on your return, following the Oregon Coast.

Let’s jump into some of our favorite stopping points from northern California to Washington state.

Sonoma County, California

Known for its awesome wineries and farm-to-table restaurants, Sonoma County is a perfect first stop to make driving from San Francisco to Seattle along I-5. There are lots of charming little towns where you can go on wine tasting tours, check out local shops and bakeries, or just relax in the pleasant natural surroundings. With the kids, make sure to grab ice cream in Sonoma Plaza!

If you’re short on time, you can just stay for the afternoon to go on a wine tour and get lunch at a restaurant. Otherwise, the plethora of cute cabins and bed & breakfasts make it a nice spot to spend the night to enjoy the country landscape and laid-back vibes before continuing your journey north. 

Fort Bragg, California

Located on the Mendocino Coast of California, Fort Bragg is famous for its proximity to the redwoods and for its incredible Glass Beach. The quaint, historic downtown of Fort Bragg has lots of local artisan shops, nice bed & breakfasts, and fun museums for people of all ages. 

Get out to explore some of the nearby parks and hiking trails which will take you to coastal waterfalls. MacKerricher State Park is particularly well-known for its scenic coastal cliffs, where you can watch the waves crash against the rocky shoreline. 

Other fun activities include horseback riding tours of the beaches or going out kayaking in some of the bays! Fort Bragg may be small, but it has a vast array of parks and recreational activities great for families, couples, or solo travelers alike. 

It’s definitely worth spending a night here as you drive from San Francisco to Seattle, or if you have more time, there’s plenty to occupy a few days of exploration.

Eureka, California 

From Fort Bragg to Eureka, you’ll meet the end of the Pacific Coast Highway at Leggett, and join Highway 101 for much of the remainder of your journey along the coast.

A stop in at the Avenue of the Giants, one of the most incredible scenic drives in northern California, or at one of the famous drive-thru trees of California is a must on this leg of your drive!

The charming historic city of Eureka is known for its Victorian architecture and beautiful mansions. Sandwiched between the rugged northern California coast and the majestic redwood trees, the natural scenery is spectacular! 

Driving from San Francisco to Seattle, Eureka is a perfect place to spend a day or two seeing the Redwoods, kayaking in the largest bay north of San Francisco, and checking out the attractions downtown. 

Eureka has a large zoo (the oldest in California!) which is a perfect place to spend an afternoon with kids. Afterward, you can pick up souvenirs or local artisan crafts in the downtown market. 

There are lots of options for accommodation in Eureka, including small inns and bed & breakfasts located in some of the historic buildings, or a wide selection of chain hotels and motels if you’re going easy on your budget.

Redwood National & State Parks, California 

Any road trip in northern California would be incomplete without visiting the majestic redwoods! These iconic giants of California are some of the oldest and tallest trees in the world; some are thought to be over 2,000  years old. 

The forest is broken into four sections: Norte State Park, Redwood National Park, Prairie Creek State Park, and Jedediah Smith State Park. All of them are amazing to visit, and depending on where you plan on stopping on your drive from San Francisco to Seattle, some of the parks may be more convenient. 

As the main 101 Highway largely runs through the state parks, entrance to the national and state parks is free unless you plan on using the designated campgrounds, which require a reservation and a fee. 

Some of the top hiking destinations in the redwoods are Stout Grove, Lady Bird Johnson Grove, and other-worldly Fern Canyon (which was featured in Jurassic Park movies!).

Crescent City, California

Considered one of the best gateway cities to visit, the Redwoods Crescent City combines a laid-back beach vibe with fun modern attractions. Crescent City has several beaches, including Crescent Beach, which offers a long stretch of sand perfect for evening strolls and sunset photographs. If you’re into surfing, you’ll want to check out the waves on Pebble Beach. 

On hot summer afternoons, you can cool off by rafting or kayaking down the Smith River. This beautiful river offers peaceful scenery through canyons and redwood trees. 

Another popular activity is horseback riding tours of the beaches and forests. These guided tours are a great family activity to see the Californian coast in a unique way. 

Crescent City is the perfect place to break up your trip north before entering Oregon; you can decide from here whether to cross through Rouge Valley and join the more direct I-5 route from Grants Pass, or continue along the 101 through to Portland (we love the scenic coastal route but you’ll want to check out our next idea for an incredible inland stop!)

Toketee Falls, Oregon

Considered one of the most beautiful places in Oregon, the stunning waterfalls of Toketee Falls definitely call for a stop on your trip from San Francisco to Seattle. 

It’s about a 4-hour drive from Crescent City or about 5 ½ hours from Eureka, making it a good first stop as you cross into Oregon. The park area itself feels quite isolated, and the nearest large city is Roseburg, which is about 1 hour away. 

The Toketee Falls Trails is the most popular trail, which is well maintained and fairly easy, but be prepared for some stairs along the route. In the end, you’ll be gifted a stunning view of the cascading waterfall from the lookout platform. 

Another popular attraction is the Umpqua Hot Springs, which are natural thermal pools where you can soak and splash around to relax during the afternoon.

If time in your itinerary permits, you could add further to this side detour on your San Fran to Seattle road trip by visiting Crater Lake National Park, the deepest lake in the United States (the scenic Rim Drive is seasonally open in summer only due to heavy snowfall in the winter months).

Although accommodation within the national park is limited, it still makes for one of the most fabulous lake vacation destinations in the US for nature lovers.

This itinerary might be good for your return journey, Seattle to Crater Lake, then loop back through the mountains to San Francisco, via Redding and Lassen Volcanic National Park in northeast California.

Eugene, Oregon

Fun, family-friendly, and full of interesting activities, spending a few days in Eugene is a great way to experience the best of the Northwest coast of Oregon. 

With a scenic location on the Willamette River, Eugene has a fun combination of nature and modernity thanks to the University of Oregon and the fun shopping and dining options. Sports fans might want to check out what’s going on at Hayward Field, which is considered one of the best stadiums in the world! 

There are plenty of choices for outdoor activities, from biking around the city to hiking along the McKenzie River National Recreation Trail. Lined with pine and fir trees, this beautiful trail follows the McKenzie River, where you can see waterfalls and various lookout points. 

Within the city itself is the Pisgah Arboretum, which covers 209 acres and has over seven miles of trails. It’s a great place to see some of the natural wildflowers, trees, and shrubs of the Pacific Northwest.

Pacific City, Oregon

Making your way back to the stunning Oregon Coastal route from San Francisco to Seattle, you’ll find the charming beach town of Pacific City, which is famous among surfers and nature enthusiasts.

Quaint houses line the long stretches of sand, and it’s easy to escape the rush of life among the sand dunes and the gentle sound of the ocean waves. Three are several fabulous coastal towns in Oregon you could say in, but Pacific City is one of our favorites for sheer variety of activities while still having a small town feel.

As you might expect, beach activities are the most popular past-time here. From horseback rides along the sand to splashing in the tide pools, there’s something for people of all ages to enjoy. 

Late winter and early spring are considered the best times of year for whale watching as these massive ocean creatures make their annual migration along the coast. Other animals you might get to spot include seals and a large variety of seabirds. 

After a day of hiking in Cape Kiwanda State Natural Area or splashing in the surf, you’ll find a variety of great local restaurants, breweries, and shops in the town.

Portland, Oregon

Oregon’s largest city is a must-visit destination during a San Francisco to Seattle road trip. With the scenic backdrop of Mount Hood and the convergence of the Columbia and Willamette Rivers, Portland is full of natural beauty and a vibrant cultural scene. 

Check out the beautiful Washington Park, where you can visit the city’s iconic International Rose Test Garden and landscaped Japanese-style rock gardens. The large park is also home to the Oregon Zoo, where kids can enjoy watching sea lion shows or making friends at the petting zoo. 

Portland is famous for its coffee shops and local restaurants. There is also a multitude of bookstores, including the famous Powell’s City of Books. If plans for outdoor activities get canceled because of a rainy afternoon, what better way to pass the time than with a cup of steaming coffee?

Cannon Beach, Oregon

About 1 hour west of Portland on the coast is the small town of Cannon Beach which is famous for its iconic coastline and the impressive Haystack Rock towering on the shore. 

The views alone make Cannon Beach a good place to stop on your drive to Seattle. Plus, the photo opportunities couldn’t be better to capture the beautiful scenery of the Pacific.

If you have time, you can make your stop at Cannon Beach more of an adventure by hiking in Ecola State Park, which has stunning views of the shore. Cannon Beach is also one of the best places to watch the winter and spring whale migrations, with an estimated 18,000 gray whales passing by the beach!

Mount Rainier National Park, Washington

About two hours south of Seattle is Mount Rainier National Park, one of the most famous parks in the Pacific Northwest and practically worthy of an entire trip in itself. 

The towering 14,410 ft Mount Rainier is the crowning jewel of the park and is actually an active volcano! 

Although the park is beautiful to visit at any time of year, spring is particularly stunning, thanks to the array of colorful wildflowers which cover the valleys and sides of the mountains. 

Options for hiking in Mount Rainier National Park are endless. You should definitely check out the famous Paradise region of the park, which easily lives up to its name thanks to the waterfalls and wildflowers. Many of the trails here are well-maintained and easy to hike which makes it a perfect spot for families. 

Any road trip to Mount Rainier wouldn’t be complete without visiting the famous overlook at Sunrise Point. The entire drive to reach the lookout is stunning, and you make your way along hairpin turns until the final bend, when Mount Rainier will be visible before you! It’s one of the most beautiful scenic drives in Washington.

Keep in mind that this parking area can become very crowded, so it’s often a good idea to visit early in the morning or late in the day so you don’t need to contend with so many tourists.

Olympic National Park, Washington

When you’re driving to Seattle, a stop at Olympic National Park is almost mandatory. The driving distance between Seattle and Olympic National Park is about two hours, so it does add a bit of driving time to your trip, but the scenery alone is well worth it.

The diverse landscape of Olympic National Park encompasses incredible forests like the Hoh Rain Forest, known for its fairytale scenery of lush green moss, and amazing mountain vistas like those found on Hurricane Ridge. 

Along the coast, you’ll find beach trails like Kalaloch Beach which is home to hundreds of marine species from porpoises to coastal birds. Get some photos of the puffins and maybe get lucky enough to spot some harbor seals swimming offshore! 

It would be easy to spend an entire week in Olympic National Park, but it is close enough to Seattle that you could do it as a day trip if you’re short on time. Otherwise, it’s not a bad idea to make reservations at one of the lodges or campsites to get a real park experience.

Complete Your Journey in Seattle

Your journey from Olympic National Park to Seattle is less than 3 hours. You can tackle this by road finishing on the I-5, or head to Bainbridge island and take the ferry across Puget Sound for an iconic arrival into Downtown Seattle.

Allow yourself several days for exploring all the best things to do in Seattle with kids before starting your homeward journey back Seattle to San Francisco.

Alternatively, if you’ve flown in for road tripping the west coast, its quite straightforward to do a one-way car hire from San Fran to Seattle. Do bare in mind, rental companies are likely to charge a one-way fee for doing this but we think it’s well worth it!

Pack sturdy rain gear for your trip, no matter what time of year; this is the Pacific Northwest, after all! 

Whether you’re camping or staying at hotels, accommodation fills up quickly along the Pacific Coast Highway, so it’s best to book well in advance, especially in summer. 

When visiting parks, having a cooler along for snacks and drinks is helpful. In order to get out in nature, you’ll often need to venture away from where there are restaurants, plus a picnic on the beach or underneath the Redwoods feels more authentic anyway! 

Cellular service is fairly good along most parts of this trip, but it doesn’t hurt to download a map in advance just in case you hit the spot without much reception (especially important for the national park stops). 
Be mindful of road closures, particularly along Highway 1 and Highway 101; landslides and bushfires are not unknown to affect the routes we’ve outlines in this itinerary. Waze is a good road tripping app to check before you set out each day.

Distance from Seattle to Yellowstone

It’s about 750 miles between Seattle and Yellowstone. This route will take you through Washington, Idaho, and Montana on I-90.  

A slightly longer route will take you south on 1-84 through Washington to Oregon and then across Idaho to reach Yellowstone. This drive is about 1,000 miles in total. 

How Long do I Need Driving from Seattle to Yellowstone?

Driving straight from Seattle to Yellowstone on the 1-90 route will take about 12 hours without any stops. Sure, this might be doable in a day if you really enjoy sitting behind the wheel. Still, with so many places to explore, we recommend breaking the trip into segments! 

Taking the southern 1-84 route is about 17 hours of driving time. Although this trip is longer, it also means you can stop in Portland, Oregon, and some of the parks in southern Idaho.

If you’re planning a round trip back from Yellowstone to Seattle, you can take 1-90 one way and 1-84 in the other direction to make the most of your travel experience. 

In this Seattle to Yellowstone driving itinerary, we’ve included stops along the northern route on the way to Yellowstone and then highlighted some of the places to visit on the south route on the way back. 

Although this trip could be done in a few days, we’d recommend planning on spending at least a week driving in either direction to allow for time to stop and visit the parks and cities.

Best Time of Year to Drive from Seattle to Yellowstone

Spring, summer, and fall are the best times of year for a road trip from Seattle to Yellowstone. Although it’s certainly possible to drive this route in the winter, parts of Yellowstone are closed during this season, and there aren’t as many options for accommodation. 

Summer is the busiest time of the month for tourists to visit Yellowstone. You’ll also encounter more traffic on the roads during this season. 

Often the shoulder months of spring and fall between April-May and September-October are considered ideal times of the year. This way, you can still enjoy good weather but miss the major crowds which flock to the park in the summer.

No matter what time of year you’re planning on taking a Seattle to Yellowstone road trip, make sure you book your accommodation well in advance, especially at Yellowstone itself. Places will fill up quickly, and you won’t want to miss out on your opportunity to explore this amazing National Park!

7 Best Stops on a Seattle to Yellowstone Road Trip

As you drive from Seattle to Yellowstone, here are some of the best parks and cities to visit along the way taking the I-90. 

Many of these stops could be entire vacations in themselves, so if you have time, don’t hesitate to stretch out your road trip to really make the most of all the exploration in store!

Not included on our itinerary but another potential stop you could add is Glacier National Park, noting you’ll need to apply for timed entry permits if visiting in the summer peak season. This stop will add approx. 4 hours more of scenic driving through Montana.

Snoqualmie Falls, Washington

We’re going to start our journey close to Seattle. Snoqualmie Falls makes an excellent first pit stop on your drive to Yellowstone if you’ve not already experienced the falls on a day trip from Seattle.

Lake Coeur d’Alene, Idaho

There are also several shoreside dining options ranging from more expensive restaurants like Cedars Floating Restaurant (which has some incredible views!) to casual family venues. 

For a short but beautiful detour on your drive from Seattle to Yellowstone, you can add on the Lake Coeur d’Alene Scenic Byway, one of the most beautiful scenic drives in Idaho. The drive is about 35 miles and it takes about an hour to drive. The panoramic views of the lake and surrounding forest and mountains give you an appreciation for the beauty of Idaho!

Missoula, Montana

A nature-lovers paradise, Missoula beckons with fun activities like hiking in the mountains, horseback riding, and fishing. 

The Clark Fork, Bitterroot, and Blackfoot rivers converge at the city, and water sports are particularly popular pastimes. For a relaxing day, you can rent inner tubes to float down the gentle areas of the rivers, or if you’re in search of more adrenaline, then kayaking may be a good option.  

The fun university town of Missoula also has a great cultural scene with theaters, art galleries, and excellent dining options. It’s a perfect place to spend a night or two to enjoy the best of the Montana wilderness as you make your way from Seattle to Yellowstone.

Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park, Montana

One of the gems of Montana, Lewis and Clark Caverns is an incredible place to visit for the whole family. It’s historically significant owing to its title of being Montana’s first state park, and it’s known for its other-worldly limestone caves filled with stalagmites, stalactites, and enormous rock columns, which give the caves the appearance of an underground cathedral. 

Don’t worry-the caves have all been equipped with electric lighting and handrails, and tour guides will accompany groups to bring them through the maze of tunnels to learn about the incredible geologic process of cave formation. 

Tours of the caverns are offered between May 1 and September 30, and during the hot summer months, not only will you enjoy the stunning natural formations but also some natural air conditioning thanks to the cool temperatures of the caverns! 

Lewis and Clark Caverns are easy to do as a daily activity, or you can also spend a night at the campground if you want to get a real experience of big sky Montana.

Bozeman, Montana

A gateway into Yellowstone, Bozeman is definitely worth visiting during your drive from Seattle to Yellowstone. 

Outdoor activities like rock climbing, hiking, mountain biking, and fly fishing are all possible thanks to the stunning mountain scenery and beautiful rivers. 

In the city, you’ll find farmers’ markets, art fairs, and a vibrant theater scene if you want to experience the social side of life after spending time in the wilderness of Montana. 

You’ll want to check out the Bozeman Hot Springs, which are a perfect place to relax and appreciate the natural spa created by the thermal springs in the area. 

Surrounded by mountains and with the big blue sky above, it’s way better than any indoor spa!  

Families traveling with kids will enjoy the Montana Grizzly Encounter, which is a grizzly bear rescue and rehabilitation site in Bozeman. It’s a perfect chance to have a close-up encounter with these enormous bears in a safe and protected environment.

From Bozeman to the North Entrance of Yellowstone is about an hour and a half, and it’s about two hours of driving to reach the West Entrance of the park. 

We’d highly recommend that you book your accommodation in Yellowstone well in advance (if you’re traveling in the summer, booking the winter before is a good idea), since lodges and campgrounds will fill up very quickly. 

West Yellowstone is the most popular of Yellowstone‘s four entrances on account of how close it is to many of the famous geysers such as Old Faithful. It’s also a convenient entrance to use for visiting the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone.

7 Best Stops Back – Yellowstone to Seattle

As we mentioned, it will take several hours longer to take the southern route back Idaho and Oregon, but this drive includes some of the most spectacular scenery in the Pacific Northwest, so we’d argue it’s unmissable on any American road trip bucketlist!

Many will also pair with a trip to Yellowstone a stop at Grand Teton National Park – you could easily add this as your first stop in Montana before continuing on with this itinerary.

You can mix and match these stops east to west for a shorter journey, but overall we’d allow a week to complete the drive back to Seattle (or alternatively, take the southern route to Yellowstone and Grand Teton, then the northern route back, it’s totally up to you!)

Idaho Falls, Idaho

Taking the south route back between Seattle and Yellowstone, you’ll drive right through Idaho Falls which is known for its amazing waterfalls (maybe you guessed by the name?). 

There are lots of options for camping, hiking, water sports, and horseback riding, as well as great activities and culture in the city itself. 

Families will want to stop to visit the Idaho Falls Zoo, which has a great petting zoo that young kids will enjoy. There are also family-friendly museums to learn about the history of the area and the Lewis and Clark expeditions. 

It’s only about a four-hour drive between Yellowstone and Idaho Falls, but because of all the things to explore, it’s worth spending at least a day, if not two or three, to get a chance to explore.

Craters of the Moon, Idaho

Visiting this National Monument on your drive from Yellowstone to Seattle is a must; you’ll truly feel like you’ve left planet Earth behind and are walking on the surface of the moon!

The landscape was created from oozing lava which seeped up from fissures in the ground. As it spread, it created a surreal environment of lava beds, tree molds, and strange lava formations covering nearly 620 square miles! 

The Space Research Center is also a great place to visit for families. Young kids will love getting Lunar Ranger Badges and learning about how the area was used in the process of training NASA astronauts for landing on the moon!

We’d also highly recommend checking out the lava tubes, which are underground tunnels created by the channels of lava. 

Craters of the Moon is a little over two hours from Idaho Falls, making it a nice day activity during your road trip between Seattle and Yellowstone.

Sawtooth National Forest, Idaho

The Sawtooth Mountains are one of the crowning natural landmarks of Idaho. Leaving behind the moonscapes of Craters of the Moon, you’ll enter some of the most stunning mountain scenery you’ve encountered yet on this drive from Seattle to Yellowstone! 

From hot springs to waterfalls, the activities in the mountains are endless, and it’s worth spending a few days exploring. 

With over 1,100 lakes and 3,000 miles of streams and rivers, the chances for water activities like kayaking, swimming, and fishing are endless. 

The Snake River is a particularly popular tourist attraction thanks to the possibilities of water rafting on the blue waters and miles of hiking trails through the mountain landscape. 

Pro Tip: There aren’t any major cities in the Sawtooth Mountains, but you can find lodges and accommodation near the town of Stanley, but make sure you book a room well in advance. For those who want to be more immersed in the outdoors, camping is also a great option!

Painted Hills, Oregon

The Painted Hills in Oregon are a geological wonder that make for an unforgettable road trip stop. These hills are part of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument and are known for their vibrant colors, which range from deep reds to bright yellows and oranges.

The hills are made up of layers of volcanic ash and clay that have been eroded by wind and water over millions of years, resulting in a landscape that looks like something out of a painting.

As you approach the Painted Hills, you’ll be struck by the contrast between the bright colors of the hills and the stark beauty of the surrounding desert landscape. The hills seem to glow in the sunlight, and the colors change depending on the time of day and the angle of the sun. Visitors are welcome to explore the hills on foot, following a series of trails that wind through the landscape.

Note this is a long driving day with not much site seeing en route. You can tackle it by staying in Boise overnight, driving it in one long hit, and staying in nearby John Day. Or, if you’re skipping Painted Hills, the I-84 is a little quicker, with a stop at Baker City, La Grande or Pendleton to break up the journey..

Columbia River Gorge, Oregon

Driving through the Columbia River Gorge Scenic Byway is a breathtaking experience that will leave you in awe of the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest. This Oregon scenic byway stretches for 75 miles along the Columbia River, cutting through the Cascade Mountains and connecting the states of Oregon and Washington.

As you travel through the Columbia River Gorge, you’ll be surrounded by towering cliffs, dense forests, and cascading waterfalls. The road twists and turns along the Columbia River, offering spectacular views of the water as it rushes through the canyon.

One of the most popular stops along the way is Multnomah Falls, a stunning 620-foot waterfall that is easily accessible from the road. Visitors can hike up to the top of the falls for an even more breathtaking view of the surrounding scenery.

Another highlight of the Columbia River Gorge Scenic Byway is the historic towns that line the route. Portland, Oregon

Making your way back up through the Pacific Northwest, it’s worth taking a slight detour on I-84 to go through Portland, Oregon. 

Eccentric, fun, and full of opportunities for outdoor adventure, it’s no wonder why Portland is such a popular city to visit. 

Spend a day hiking around Mount Tabor, then head downtown to check out the fantastic restaurants and culinary scenes the city has to offer. Local coffee shops abound, and Portland is said to have some of the best coffee anywhere in the U.S.!

After a trip full of mountain scenery, experience a new kind of natural beauty at the Portland Japanese Garden. These artistically curated gardens are full of amazing flowers, picturesque bridges, and tranquil ponds covering about 12 acres.

Mount Rainier National Park, Washington

On the southeast side of Seattle, Mt. Rainier National Park makes a perfect way to round off your Seattle to Yellowstone road trip. 

The iconic peak of Mt. Rainier is one of the best-known natural landmarks in the Pacific Northwest. Some people don’t realize that it’s also an active volcano that last erupted about 150 years ago! 

The park is a popular place for hiking, mountain climbing, and biking. Although it’s possible to visit the park in a day, we’d recommend at least spending a night or two either at a campsite or lodge so you don’t feel rushed. 

The glaciated peaks and mountain rivers of this park are stunning year-round, but spring is particularly beautiful thanks to the fields of mountain wildflowers. Painting the mountainsides with bright gold and purple, it’s no wonder that Mt. Rainier ends up in so many postcard photographs!

The distance from Portland to San Francisco direct is 634 miles. The Portland to San Francisco drive time is almost 10 hours on the I-5 without any stops, which, let’s be honest, driving with kids in the car means pee stops are frequent and boredom will set in fast.

Portland to Cannon Beach – 80 miles / 1 hour 30 minutes

A small-town village named after a naval cannon that washed ashore from an 1840s shipwreck, centered perfectly by the sea’s coastline for picturesque views, Cannon Beach has been widely recognized for having the best beach in Oregon and is a great place to start your road trip along the Oregon Coast.  

See the famous basalt sea stacks at Cannon Beach. View Haystack Rock, which rises to 235 feet tall on the beach shore. Haystack Rock really is one of the reasons why Canon Beach has become so well-loved. National Geographic rated Cannon Beach as one of the world’s top 100 most beautiful places. It has even been acted as a filming location for three iconic movies — The Goonies, Twilight, and Point Break. 

But that’s not all Cannon Beach is known and loved for. The charming coastal town features more than a dozen art galleries and boasts optimal whale-watching opportunities from March to April, then again from December to January during seasonal whale migration periods.

Alternatively, if you hit Cannon Beach from April to July, you and the family can see the colony of puffins nesting by the sea stack!  

Some Smaller Roadside Stops to Make

Time dependent, you’ll want to make time in your itinerary for:

• A beach walk in Ecola State Park
• Quaint shops in Manzanita and Nehalem Bay State Park

Continuing along the 101, your next major stop is Pacific City. A quaint beach town with the captivating Cape Kiwanda as its headland, it’s one of our favorite places on the Oregon Coast.

A hot spot for surfers, anglers, and anyone looking to find peace within nature and away from the hustle and bustle of life. Pacific City’s long stretches of sandy beaches, towering sand dunes, and massive sea stacks offer impactful views for visitors and locals alike.  

The Cape Kiwanda State Natural Area is an excellent stop for the family to stretch their legs. You can experience Pacific City by foot on the hiking trails, available in many varying levels of difficulty.

The tide pools on the shore are filled with crabs and sea stars, with wildlife watching opportunities for seals and whales, and the spectacular hidden sea caves too, making a trip through Cape Kiwanda’s State Natural Area incredibly rewarding.  

Stop by for a meal surrounded by gorgeous beachfront views at the original birthplace of Pelican Brewing. Then, take the family on an unforgettable horseback ride along the coast and sand dunes with the team at Green Acres Beach & Trail Rides. All before heading back out on your scenic trip to San Francisco! 

Some Further Stops to Consider Mid-Oregon Coast

Depending how long you have, these can either be road side/meal stops or allow yourself an extra night or two as you make your way through these stunning coastal stops and points of interest:

• Lincoln City
• Depoe Bay – very popular small coastal town in whale watching season, also look out for Devil’s Punchbowl
• Newport – one of the larger towns with its Historic Bayfront is a great meal stop, see the picturesque Yaquina Bay Bridge, the Oregon Coast Aquarium and Hatfield Science Center
• Yachats – Cape Perpetua Visitor Center and Thor’s Well
• Haceta Head lighthouse
• Sea Lion Caves
• Umpqua Lighthouse State Park

These attractions may look relatively close together on a map, but even a short stop at each will add time to your overall journey – try not to rush!

Bandon, Oregon 

Pacific City to Bandon – 168 miles / 3 hours 35 minutes (without stops)

Heading to the southern section of the Oregon Coast, having the title of “Cranberry Capital of Oregon,” Bandon city is one of the top cranberry producers in the country. It is the home to swaths of sprawling cranberry fields that catch the eye. And that’s not all Bandon is known for!  

The town hosts the world-famous Bandon Dunes Golf Resort and is touted to be where some of the best links golf courses in the country can be found. The beaches are awe-inspiring, with imposing sea stacks lodged in the ground offshore. During low tide, the beach caves are accessible to adventure, and the tidepools are home to barnacles, anemones, and other little marine creatures.  

The historic district, Old Town Brandon, is brimming with shops, galleries, markets, and cafes to explore and find local goods. For a more historical turn, visit the Bandon Historical Society Museum. The museum defines the impactful history of the old town, including the Bandon Fire that eradicated hundreds of buildings in the town.  

If you’re looking for a good half way point on your coastal journey, this is one of the best places to make an overnight stop. Try Bandon Inn in town, or campers seek out Bullards Beach State Campground at the mouth of Coquille River.

Crescent City, California 

Bandon to Crescent City – 109 miles / 2 hours and 10 minutes

Home to the Redwood National & State Parks headquarters and the historic Battery Point Lighthouse, Crescent City is a one-of-a-kind town you and the family don’t want to skip! 

The starting point for your California leg of the trip, you’ll soon leave the Pacific Ocean behind and find yourself surrounded by sky-high coastal redwoods.

The Redwood Highway is a 175-mile drive that traverses through groves of redwood trees between Crescent City and Legget, and we definitely recommend taking the drive through the famous Chandelier Tree when passing through Legget.  

Crescent City’s downtown area is about five miles from Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, which is home to some of the most stunning redwood groves. Also, don’t pass up driving down the historic Howland Hill Road. Established in 1887, the road was used as a stagecoach route and passes through the park, where visitors can experience the peaceful beauty of nature’s solitude.  

Afterwards, check out the Battery Point Lighthouse on a tiny island near Crescent City’s southwest shore. During low tide, the ocean recedes to expose a road that accesses the island. The Battery Point Lighthouse was in service for 160 years, protecting mariners from the deathly toll of the rocky coast.  

Redwood National & State Parks 

A collection of protected redwood groves, Redwood National and State Parks is a World Heritage Site and International Biosphere Reserve that extends along Northern California’s coast.

It comprises four sections: Del Norte State Park, Prairie Creek State Park, Redwood National Park, and Jedediah Smith State Park. The 101 will see you drifting through various sections of the national and state parks. It is the best route to take if you’d like to see a US national park from the comfort of your vehicle! 

The park safeguards the tallest trees in the world, over 40 miles of coastline, sprawling prairies, wildlife, and much more! The tallest redwood tree at 379 feet tall in Redwood National Park is Hyperion which is believed to be the tallest tree in the world. These impressive trees live more than 2,000 years as they continue to grow to stretch towards the sky.  

Prairie Creek State Park, California

Crescent City to Prairie Creek – 34 miles / 47 minutes

Part of the Redwood National and State Parks, Prairie Creek State Park is a natural wonder. Bring the RV, camper, or pitch tents to hitch up at the park’s campgrounds, Elk Prairie, Gold Bluffs Beach, and Meadow Cabin Colony, to stay the night or take a couple of days to settle down and bask in the majesty of the natural world. 

Even if you choose not to stay or travel the park, you and the family can still experience the awe-inspiring perspectives of ancient redwoods on the Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway. The ten-mile drive passes through the primeval redwood forests of Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park with exceptional opportunities to catch sightings of wild Roosevelt Elk herds trekking through the woods.  

Stop over to Fern Canyon, a canyon named after the bountiful ferns that stretch up the canyon’s 50-foot tall walls. The area of Fern Canyon was used as a film location for Jurassic Park II The Lost World. 

Eureka, California 

Prairie Creek to Eureka – 48 miles / 55 minutes

The largest coastal city between Portland and San Francisco, Eureka, California, is a state historic landmark 90 miles south of the Oregon and California border. It makes another good break point for an overnight stay if you’re not intend on completing your Oregon to California drive in one hit!

Founded in 1850 as a town, Eureka is well-known for its refined Victorian architecture, California’s oldest zoo, Sequoia Park Zoo, and one of the world’s most photographed mansions, the Carson Mansion. The Carson Mansion is a large Victorian mansion that was the home to one of Northern California’s first major lumber barons, William Carson.  

Stop by the market and cultural center for unique finds and a gift shop with souvenirs to take back home. Gawk over the numerous exceptional historic Victorian homes, including the “The Pink Lady,” officially named J. Milton Carson House. The 1889 historic home was constructed in Queen Anne architectural style to be presented as a lovely wedding gift.

Movie buffs in your car may also be interested in downloading “Map of The Movies” for exploring around Humboldt and Del Norte Counties. Many famous movies – including Jurassic Park, E.T. Star Wars and The Lost World – use these unique forested coast as their backdrop.

Avenue of the Giants, California

Eureka to Avenue of the Giants – 39 miles / 42 minutes

Considered the most exceptional forest drive in the world, the Avenue of the Giants is famed for its massive redwood trees. The 31-mile road parallels Highway 101 as a slower, more scenic alternative surrounded by Humboldt Redwoods State Park. This park is home to the largest remaining grove of virgin redwoods.

The Avenue of the Giants has numerous access points to memorial groves and hiking trails. There are posted trailheads and access roads dotting the length of the road. Taking time to stop at some or all these points of interest will be worth it.

Several small towns will be passed along the way, including Myers Flat, Redcret, and Pepperwood, each presenting a unique atmosphere, redwood memorabilia, and local shopping and dining options. 

It’s possible to pop on and off the 101 at this point to enjoy sections of the Avenue of the Giants – those that suffer from motion sickness may see why you don’t want to drive the full length!

Leggett, California  

Avenue of the Giants to Leggett – 52 miles / 1 hour

Entering Legget, California, you need to hop off Highway 101 to Highway 1 to remain on the scenic route driving up the coast to San Francisco.  

Legget is home to the Smithe Redwoods State Natural Reserve, home to a 60-foot waterfall. The reserve is residence to an old-growth lowland redwood grove and a deep swimming hole in Eel River, where swimming and fishing are popular. 

Within Legget is the famous Chandelier Drive-Thru Tree. The Chandelier Tree is 276 feet tall and 16-foot diameter at breast height. The 2,400-year-old coastal redwood tree was carved a 6-foot wide by a 6-foot 9-inch high hole for cars to pass through. The tree is still alive, even with the massive hole in the center! 

Fort Bragg, California 

Leggett to Fort Bragg – 43 miles /1 hour 20 mins

Famous for Glass Beach, teeming with vibrantly colored natural glass stones (though they’re getting harder to spot these days), Fort Bragg, California, is the biggest city situated along California’s Mendocino Coast.  

The world-famous Skunk Train is found in Fort Bragg. Since 1885, the historic Skunk Train has laid out a magical opportunity for passengers to hop on for a ride through the ancient redwood groves, across trestle bridges, and through tunnels to descend into the Noyo River Canyon.

Consider taking the family on a railbike tour up the train tracks for a more active option. This tour takes guests up the same route as the Skunk Train Pudding Creek Express for a more intimate and active experience through the Mendocino Redwoods.  

Stop over to the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens. The sprawling 47 acres are decorated magnificently with natural features such as a thriving closed-cone pine forest, canyons layered with ferns, native flora, and breathtaking garden displays.  

Important Note: It is illegal to remove any glass from Glass Beach!  

The start of Highway 1 from Leggett to the Pacific Ocean can be brutal on nausea sufferers; we’d only recommend side tripping to Fort Bragg if you plan a full day trip or staying on the Mendocino Coast

San Francisco

Fort Bragg to San Francisco – 164 miles / 3 hours 15 minutes

Rejoin the 101 after a picturesque drive through the Navarro River Redwoods State Park and end your journey crossing the iconic Golden Gate Bridge.

Your Journey Home – San Francisco to Portland

If you are making this into a round trip, no need to completely retrace your steps. Having taken the coastal route down to San Fran, hugging the Pacific Ocean, why not turn this into a National and State Parks road trip through Central Oregon on the way back?

• First stop, Lassen Volcanic National Park – this is a through road in the summer months or head back via Redding.
• Continue your journey on the I-5 past the picturesque Shasta Lake and snow-capped Mount Shasta.
• Turn off the I-5 at Weed towards Klamath Falls, your gateway back into Oregon (sadly, no waterfalls to be found).
• You can make a side trip at this point to Medford or Grants Pass in Southern Oregon; excellent wine tasting territory and the Oregon Caves National Monument to explore, plus plenty of outdoor adventures on Rogue River.
• Visit Crater Lake National Park and complete the 33-mile Scenic Rim Drive (seasonal, summer only) to see the country’s deepest lake
• From here you can follow our Seattle to Crater Lake road trip itinerary in reverse
• You can cut back through Umpqua National Forest to finish on the I-5. On this route you’ll take in the state capital Salem, the Willamette Valley (more wine tasting!) and the stunning Silver Falls State Park.
• Alternatively, for a more scenic finish, stay on Route 97 to Bend, continue to Mt Hood and for the perfect picturesque finish to this amazing loop road trip, you could even add on the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area
• If you’re continuing this drive further north into Washington, you’ll want to pop over next to our San Francisco to Seattle road trip itinerary.

More Tips for Road Tripping California  

• As many of these points of interest are located on the coast or beneath the towering redwood trees, we recommend bringing a jacket or windbreaker just in case. The winds can be severe and chilly even if you plan on tackling this drive during the summer. Underneath the encompassing canopy of the redwood tree forests, temperatures are known to drop.

• Pack a road trip cooler, treats, and utensils (reusable tools are the way to go!). Picnicking is a big recommendation for this ultimate road trip. As you head up the coast, stop by grocery stores to restock and fill the cooler with more goodies. Whenever you and the family stop at any of the points of interest, let’s say, the Avenue of the Giants or any of our other recommendations, don’t miss out on enjoying a picnic with the family

Best Time To Visit Portland 

Summer is the best time we recommend touring Portland, Oregon, from June to August is when the weather is great for outdoor recreational activities.

There are usually several things to do if you’re traveling with kids in Portland. Often there is a surge in tourist numbers at this time of year, so it’s highly recommended you book your accommodation and any special tours and attractions early.

Some notable events during summer include the summer market, outdoor performance venues, and annual bike festivals.

Where To Stay In Portland With Kids

The place you stay in will immensely impact your trip to Portland, whether you’re a first-time visitor there for a month or on a short weekend trip with your kids. Below are the various Portland areas we recommend you stay:

1. Downtown Portland

Downtown Portland is suitable if you’re just in town for a weekend getaway. This charming, family-friendly side of town has food cart pods and plenty of recreational space where your kids can run about and have fun. You will pay a bit of a premium though for being in the center of town.

2. The Pearl District

This particular side of Portland is more upscale, with a few high-end restaurants, hotels, and stores. The Pearl District has a lively and charming ambiance, which can be an enjoyable experience for everyone.

3. Northeast Portland

The Alberta Arts District is another excellent location to stay if you intend to explore downtown and the region of the west area river. Northeast Portland has a fantastic neighborhood with plenty of hotels and vacation rentals.

4. East of the River

We highly recommend East of the river if you love to eat and want to taste something different. This location also has plenty of food trucks, long-standing classics, and experimental pop-ups. The East of the river is also only 20 minutes away from the heart of Portland, which makes it quite convenient when you want to visit downtown but enjoy a more suburban feel.

Getting To Portland And Getting Around 

Getting around Portland is easy as there are plenty of public transportation options to choose from: streetcars, light rails, and buses.

However, if you want to go on a road trip to wine country, the Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area, or explore the Oregon coast or Mount Hood after arriving in Portland, having your own car may be the better option.

Portland Airport (PDX) to Downtown Portland

Below are four means of transport you can use immediately after landing at the airport.

1. TriMet/MAX light rail

The easiest way of getting to Portland from the airport, 9 miles northeast of downtown, entails using the TriMet MAX/Light Rail Red Line service. It typically takes around 38 minutes and services leave every 15 minutes. 

2. Taxi Cabs or Ride Share

Taxi cabs are also another convenient way you can get to downtown Portland. The entire ride takes approximately 20-40 minutes. Cabs are usually found outside near the baggage claim section of the airport’s terminals’ central area.

Ride Share services also have a designated pick-up area immediately outside the terminal, Uber, Lyft and Wingz services can be booked.

3. Shuttles

You can also use the shuttle when leaving the airport. They are usually found at the terminal’s bottom entrance outside the baggage claim section opposite the second strip.

Getting Around Major Attractions In Portland

Public transportation is the best way of getting to town; however, we highly recommend walking once in town if you want to spend quality time at the city’s parks with your kids.

Portland has one of the best transport systems that connect the entire town with extensive routes that cover wide parts that lead to major tourist attractions.

On the other hand, you can rent a car if you intend to stay for a while and want a more convenient way to travel with kids. Some places you can visit on your road trip from Portland include Mt Hood Circuit, closer to Portland, Oregon’s seven wonders, or the Oregon coast.

12 Best Destinations To Visit With Kids In Portland

On to the fun stuff! What is there to see and do in Portland with kids? We’ve narrowed it down to the top 12 activities for kids in Portland, Oregon.

1. Oregon Museum of Science and Industry

This Oregon museum – OMSI – is without a doubt one of the best family-friendly destinations in Portland and among the top science centers in the US. A visit to OMSI will spark your kid’s interest as there are educational programs, presentations, and exhibits.

The museum has the Kendall Planetarium, which showcases the universe in detail. There’s also a kid’s science lab and a themed film at the empirical theater.

The admission fee for adults is $16 and $11 for children, while the planetarium and IMAX cost a little extra. Bringing your car, you’ll also want to pre-pay your parking when booking tickets.

This is the ideal trip to plan for a rainy day (Portland does indeed get a few of them, even in summer!)

2. Floating World Comics

Got any comic book fans? Floating World Comics, located in the downtown area of Portland, is an exemplary comic store paradise. We’re sure your kids will enjoy reading a wide range of superhero, action, adventure, fantasy, humor, and action comics.

A Wednesday trip to the comic store is worth looking forward to, as there’s a new batch of comic genres for your kids. Although Floating World Comics isn’t the only bookstore in Portland, it’s arguably the best kid-friendly one in the country.

3. Grand Central Baking Company

Among the fun things to do in Portland with your kids is to visit this remarkable bakery. The Grand Central Baking Company was founded in 1972 and is renowned for having one of the best rustic artisan loaves in America.

If you’re looking for a place where they serve heart-baked bread and a variety of sandwiches from the classics to the seasonal, then we highly recommend a visit to the Grand Central with your kids, a great place to plan a lunch or snack stop!

4. Oregon Zoo

One of our activities while in Portland is visiting the Oregon Zoo, home to more than 2000 animals living in various habitats. This tourist destination is renowned for hosting millions of visitors each year.

The zoo also has plenty of activities that range from educational workshops, presentations, and numerous summer shows that are suitable for children.

Open Friday to Monday (closed Tuesday-Thursday). Note that you must buy your tickets in advance; the admission fee for ages 2 to 11 is $19, while all over 12’s are $24.

5. Oaks Amusement Park

Oaks Amusement Park is another scenic, adventure-packed destination in Portland. Among the greatest things to do for kids in Portland is touring Oaks in the summer. There are drive Go-Carts, a Ferris Wheel, and a roller coaster with a 360-degree loop your kids will enjoy.

Alternatively, you can take your child on a train ride that goes through the park or go on a spinning hot air balloon with a bird’s eye view of the park.

For rainy days, there’s also an indoor skating rink open year-round, or try the Escape Rooms for a challenge the whole family can enjoy.

Admission to Oaks Amusement Park is free (open from Spring to Fall); however, you’ll have to pay for the rides and other activities your kids participate in. 

6. Portland Aerial Tram

For kids that love all things that go, the Portland Aerial Tram is a great way to see the city.

Running between Portland’s South Waterfront district and the main Marquam Hill neighborhood, the tram is elevated 500 feet and goes through 3,300 feet of natural land with panoramic views of the Portland forest landscape.

There is an Espresso coffee shop where you and your kids can enjoy cold drinks, snacks, and delicious food after a day of exploration.

A Portland Aerial Tram round-trip is free of charge for children under six years and $7 for those aged seven and above.

7. Portland Saturday Market

Holding the stellar reputation as the country’s largest open-air arts and crafts market, a weekend stop at PSM is a must! The Portland Saturday Market runs from March to Christmas every year – rain or shine – as you’d expect, on a Saturday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. You’ll find it at the Tom McFall Waterfront Park.

A completely free activity – but we’d recommend you take your purse as you’re bound to find some Portland souvenirs!

8. Portland Japanese Garden

There are no surprises in a city as lush as Portland that many of the great places to visit are parks and gardens! One of our favorites is the Portland Japanese Garden. The park was founded after World War II as a place of great beauty and serenity in the city as a form of healing and connection with Japan.

Open Wednesday to Monday 10:00 AM, last admission 3:30 PM; entry is $19.95 for adults, youths (6-17) $13.95, 5 and under free. NB they close in mid-winter.

9. Voodoo Doughnut

Now, what would a trip to Portland be without a stop at the iconic home of Voodoo Doughnut?

There are two outlets, the original found on SW/3rd in Old Town and another in Northeast Davis Street. Famous for their crazy creations and toppings such as banana cream, buttermilk, berries, chocolate, sugar, and sprinkles, come with an empty stomach!!

10. Washington Park

Washington Park is one of the oldest and most popular city parks in the United States, with lots of activities on offer. No wonder this kid-friendly park is filled with thousands of tourists each year (and a fitting stop, perhaps after your fill of doughnuts!!)

The park has several fun things you and your kids can indulge in, such as hiking, biking, or visiting the Oregon Zoo (mentioned above). Washington Park also has an interactive water park (open from April to October) which is always a fun stop for the kids when the weather is playing nice!

(NB the cute little Portland Children’s Museum within the grounds looks to have completely closed its doors over COVID, it didn’t return over the summer 2022)

The park’s admission fee is free; however, if you come by car, there’s parking starting from $3 an hour.

11. World Forestry Center

World Forestry Center is another remarkable kid-friendly destination we highly recommend touring. This 20,000-square-foot museum’s main focus is forest conservation.

There are plenty of activities kids can engage in, such as educational presentations, viewing interactive exhibits, or enjoying a ride on the Canopy Lift that gives an aerial view of the forest.

Open Wednesday to Sunday, 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM, admission is free for kids under 3, $5 for kids and adults. Parking is limited so taking the Max Light Rail is highly encouraged.

12. Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area

This one is just outside the city, but an absolute must if you’re visiting Portland.

The Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area is packed with recreational kids’ activities in Portland. There are accessible trails, camping grounds, cascading waterfalls, and scenic forests ideal for sightseeing.

This canyon also has natural pools where your kids can water play, although under close supervision. However, if you don’t want to get your feet dirty, visiting the museum of Columbia River Gorge is always a great experience for both you and your kids.

The admission fee is $5 for a private vehicle, including all its passengers.
