You can also witness the annual migration of giant cuttlefish at Stony Point, a mesmerising natural spectacle that you will find fascinating. If you plan on heading from Whyalla to Streak Bay with kids, let them have a run around at the playgrounds at Civic Park or the Whyalla Wetlands.

Port Lincoln (2 – 3 days)

Port Lincoln is the largest town on the peninsula and roughly the halfway point of the coastal route, making it a terrific place for a rest day or two.

Its around a 3-hour driving day if you go direct from Whyalla, but we recommend taking your time and making some stops at the smaller coastal fishing towns and beautiful white sand beaches en route.

With a 4WD you can take the stunning coastal drive between Cowell and Port Gibbon. Continuing south, its also worth a stop at Arno Bay, Port Neill and Tumby Bay.

One of the best places to visit in Port Lincoln is the Axel Stenross Maritime Museum, where you can explore the history of the local fishing industry. But if you fancy something a bit more adventurous, Port Lincoln is renowned for its thrilling shark cage diving experiences, allowing you to get up close with the ocean’s apex predators.

For a more tranquil experience, take a scenic drive along Lincoln National Park‘s rugged coastline, offering breathtaking views, pristine beaches, and hiking and wildlife spotting opportunities. The calm, pristine waters also make it an excellent spot for snorkelling, fishing and swimming. 

Port Lincoln Marine Park also offers the unique experience of being able to swim with sea lions (at a different location to the shark diving, we promise!) There are presently two regulated providers for these half-day tours, Calypso Star Charters and Salty Swims.

STAY: There are many good motel and apartment choices in Port Lincoln; for families Aart Apartments are roomy and in a great location near the beach. Port Lincoln Tourist Park is another great option with cabins and powered caravan sites. Off roaders, head into Lincoln National Park with camping from $21 per night.

Elliston (1-2 Days)

Continuing our drive onto the west coast of the Eyre Peninsula, charming Elliston is a place you will probably not want to leave.

One of the town’s most iconic attractions is its stunning coastal cliffs and rock formations, including the awe-inspiring Murphy’s Haystacks, a cluster of ancient granite boulders. Visitors can explore these formations and capture breathtaking photographs of the dramatic coastline.

Elliston’s Coastal Trail also offers picturesque walks where you can spot wildlife and admire the sweeping ocean views. Additionally, fishing is a popular activity where you can cast a line off the jetty or at the beach. The pristine sands of Elliston’s beaches are also perfect for relaxation, swimming and walking.

STAY: Motel options are limited in Elliston, we’d recommend this as one of the best stretches of coast for beach camping. Try Sheringa Beach, about 35 minutes from Elliston.

Streaky Bay (1-3 days)

The town, known for its pristine, turquoise waters and stunning beaches,  gets its name from the streaks of colour that often dance across the bay’s surface during sunset – creating a mesmerising spectacle.

However, beyond its natural beauty, it is a hub for fishing, water sports, and encounters with marine wildlife. Visitors can try their luck at catching prized seafood or embark on boat trips to observe dolphins, seals, and even the majestic great white sharks.

Gawler Ranges National Park is also home to Mount Wudinna, an impressive granite monolith with panoramic views from its summit. You can hike to the top, although it is probably not suitable for younger kids.

Should you wish to camp here, some facilities enable you to do so.

Ceduna

Ceduna in South Australia represents the last town before the start of the Nullarbor Drive. So you should take the opportunity to get a good night’s rest here and fill up on petrol and other essential supplies.

If you stay here, the Ceduna Foreshore Hotel Motel is a good option. It offers a giant water slide that provides hours of fun for kids. The venue also features a playground, perfect for younger children to burn off some energy while enjoying outdoor playtime.

Located on the Eyre Peninsula, the hotel is also close to the beach, whose white sandy shores and clear turquoise waters are great for swimming, fishing and snorkelling. Nearby it, you should also take the opportunity to view the colony of sea lions at the Point Labatt Conservation Park.

For a dose of culture and history, the Ceduna National Trust Museum showcases the local heritage, providing insights into the area’s Indigenous culture, early European settlement, and maritime history. Kids can learn about the region’s fascinating past through interactive exhibits, displays, and artefacts.

Eucla

You’ll find several roadhouses within the small towns that line the Nullarbor where you can fuel up. However, should you want to stretch your legs for a while, Eucla is a terrific stop in which to do so.

Providing a unique and off-the-beaten-path adventure, this small town on the Nullarbor Plain offers a glimpse into the vastness and beauty of Australia’s outback.

Blessed with incredible scenery that includes endless horizons, stunning coastal cliffs and rolling sand dunes, it is known for the historic Eucla Telegraph Station ruins. This heritage site showcases the town’s past and role in developing early communication systems.

The Eucla National Park is another must-visit destination. Families can embark on nature walks to scenic lookout points where you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Southern Ocean and the rugged coastline. Sandboarding is also popular here, allowing kids to slide down the sandy slopes on specially designed boards in a thrilling experience.

Norseman

Norseman is the first town you get to after leaving the Nullarbor Plain. So you should stop here to refuel and rest before completing your drive to Perth.

Norseman is known for its rich mining history, which you can learn about by visiting the Norseman Mining Museum. The museum showcases exhibits that provide insight into the mining practices of the past and the significance of gold in shaping the region’s history. It’s an educational and engaging experience that can spark curiosity and interest in geology and mining with your kids.

Other attractions like the Fraser Range Station and the Dundas Nature Reserve offer opportunities for camping, bushwalking and wildlife spotting, while, like Eucla, Norseman is also a fantastic spot for stargazing.

Kalgoorlie

Kalgoorlie is one of Australia’s most famous tourist destinations. Even though it’s only a 2-hour drive from Norseman, you should stop here for a day or two during your drive from Melbourne to Perth.

Known for its rich gold mining history and vast landscapes, Kalgoorlie offers a range of activities that will engage the whole family.

Arguably its most compelling attraction is the Super Pit. In this open-pit gold mine, you can take a guided tour to learn about the mining process and the Super Pit’s history and get an up-close look at the massive machinery used in mining operations. It’s a unique opportunity for kids to witness firsthand the scale of a working gold mine.

Another highlight of visiting Kalgoorlie is exploring the town’s historical sites. Walk through the streets and admire the beautifully preserved heritage buildings that showcase the town’s gold rush past. They include the Kalgoorlie Town Hall, Post Office, and the Western Australian Museum.

Nearby, Karlkurla Bushland Park is a great place to visit for families who like to get active. As exciting a prospect as driving across the Nullarbor is, it can also be quite a challenge. Here are some tips to make it as pleasurable an experience as possible.

• The Nullarbor Plain is a vast and remote region, so planning your journey is crucial. Decide whether you’ll be driving the Eyre Highway or taking an alternative route, and make a note of fuel stations, accommodations and food options along the way.
• Petrol stations can sometimes be hundreds of kilometres apart on the drive through the Nullarbor. So make sure you fill up with fuel or recharge your EV whenever you can – even if you still have more than 50% capacity left.
• If you are driving a petrol vehicle, consider taking some fuel with you, not just for yourself but anyone you see who might have run out along the way.
• Before attempting the crossing, ensure you stock up on supplies like food, water, and any necessary medications, as there may be limited options for purchasing these items along the route. It is worth taking at least 3-4 days’ worth of supplies with you – as a minimum.
• The Nullarbor can be a long and monotonous drive, so staying focused and alert is essential. Avoid fatigue by taking regular breaks and switching drivers often to keep yourself fresh.
• To break up the boredom of the long drive, consider creating a music or podcast playlist you can access offline through apps like Spotify Premium. Doing this will keep you entertained along the way. If you have kids, consider downloading movies onto an iPad and bring lots of toys, games, books and crafts for them.
• Try to leave as early in the morning as possible – no later than 6 am ideally – to give you as many hours of daylight as possible to navigate the road.
• Whilst driving, be mindful of wildlife, as kangaroos, emus, and other animals can cross the road unexpectedly. Take extra caution at dawn, dusk, and night when they are more active.
• If you see birds on the road feasting on roadkill, beep your horn (as opposed to swerving into the opposite lane), as this will make them disperse quickly.
• Ensure you have an emergency kit in your vehicle, including a spare tyre, tools, first aid supplies and a flashlight. It’s also advisable to carry a satellite phone or a UHF radio for communication in extreme emergencies.

It’s a long drive from Adelaide to Melbourne, so you may need to stop at some point during your journey. Here are some of the best places you should visit depending on which route you take.

1. M8/A8 – Most Direct Route Adelaide to Melbourne

If time is of the essence and you want to take the most direct route along National Highway A8 be sure to stop at the following places:

Murray Bridge

Although Murray Bridge is only an hour’s drive from Adelaide, it is worth stopping overnight as it provides some of the best opportunities for stargazing in the country.

Blessed with a stunning natural landscape, the Murray Bridge Riverside Caravan Park is one of the best spots for stargazing in the area. It has a terrific platform within its serene, open-air setting to enjoy a stargazing adventure.

The kids will no doubt be wowed by the night sky’s clarity, enabling them to see various stars and constellations. For those living in urban areas with more light pollution, it is an exhilarating experience. Visitors can also attend the Murray Bridge Astronomical Society’s public stargazing events, where experienced astronomers provide a guided night sky tour through telescopes and binoculars.

During the day, take the kids to the Murray Bridge Swimming Centre. It has a 50-metre pool as well as shaded children’s pools. Monarto Safari Park is also worth visiting. The largest safari park outside of Africa, it has lions, giraffes, cheetahs, black rhinoceros and the Tasmanian Devils to see!

Grampians National Park

Crossing over into Victoria, The Grampians National Park is a fabulous place to visit for active families with children.

For those into hiking, rock climbing, and wildlife watching, there are plenty of opportunities to partake in these activities – in fact, we’d allow a few days if you can!

Children will be fascinated by the ancient rock formations within the park and keen to learn more about its rich Aboriginal history. Some of the easier walks to undertake with kids include Venus Baths and The Balconies Lookout.

You can also take scenic drives to see more of the park’s stunning landscape, enjoy picnics, and go camping.

On a warm summer’s day, there are several swimming pools where you can take a dip, some of which are at the foot of waterfalls. You will also see lots of kangaroos bouncing around on the grasslands!

Nearby, the lovely town of Halls Gap has a beautiful adventure playground for kids to enjoy and there are lots of bakeries and cafes to feed your little ones along your journey.

If you’re making it an overnight stop, try Halls Gap Lakeside Tourist Park or The Lodges are superbly located in the centre of town.

Ballarat

Ballarat in Victoria is a historic destination that offers plenty to see and do for those with children.

One of its main attractions is Sovereign Hill, which offers visitors the chance to step back in time to the 1850s and experience life as a gold miner.

Kids can watch blacksmithing, candle making, and traditional cooking demonstrations, providing a fascinating living history lesson. They can also pan for gold and keep anything they find!

Another big draw is the Ballarat Wildlife Park, where you can see many native Australian animals, including kangaroos, koalas, and emus. Kids can even feed and pat some of the animals.

Additionally, the Eureka Centre is also worth a visit. There you can learn about the historic Eureka Rebellion and its role in shaping Australian democracy. You can also browse for souvenirs at its gift shop.

Again, if your itinerary permits, we’d spare at least 2 night stopping in Ballarat as there’s plenty for kids to see and do. We suggest Sovereign Park Motor Inn is a good choice for families with in indoor pool,

2. Dimboola Detour – Adelaide to Melbourne Drive via Bendigo

If you take the detour at Dimboola and then eventually get to Melbourne via the A79 / M79. Taking this route, you will visit historic Bendigo.

Bendigo

Bendigo is renowned for being a terrific destination for a family holiday. One of the main things to do there is visit the Central Deborah Gold Mine, where you can take an underground mine tour and learn about the history of gold mining in the area.

Another terrific activity is riding on the Bendigo Tramways, which involves journeying on a vintage tram through the city streets.

Your kids should also love exploring the Bendigo Botanic Gardens, which has a children’s playground and a scenic lily-covered lake. 

Picturesque Lake Weeroona is also a lovely spot for a day out in nature. You can enjoy a picnic, paddleboat ride, swim or play ball sports in its grassy areas. In fact, Bendigo is a treasure trove of kids playgrounds!

For those wanting a spot of culture, the Bendigo Art Gallery presents several exhibitions throughout the year.

Make a stop here overnight before continuing the last leg of your journey through the Macedon Ranges. A great spot to stop is at the Woodend Bakery – a must! – before you reach Melbourne.

3. Princes Highway/Great Ocean Road – Adelaide to Melbourne

Although the coastal route takes a little longer, the fact you get to drive Victoria’s iconic Great Ocean Road is the huge drawcard of making this detour.

Mount Gambier

Just before you reach the border of Victoria, you will come to Mount Gambier. It is worth stopping at this picturesque city as it offers plenty for families with kids.

One of its main drawcards is its stunning natural wonders, which include the Blue Lake and the Umpherston Sinkhole.

The Blue Lake is especially impressive during the summer when the water turns a bright turquoise colour – hence its name. At this time, you can swim, sunbathe and picnic here, and there is plenty of space for little ones to run around safely.

Kids should also enjoy exploring the limestone caves at the Tantanoola Caves Conservation Park and the Engelbrecht Cave. The Mount Gambier Railway Lands is another excellent family-friendly destination, boasting playgrounds, picnic areas, and walking trails.

After the best part of five hours of driving, head to the Mount Gambier Marketplace and Main Corner Complex, which offer several shops and entertainment options for the whole family.

Drive the Great Ocean Road

Driving the Great Ocean Road to see the Twelve Apostles will surely be the major highlight of your road trip Adelaide to Melbourne.

The scenic drive starts from the beautiful fishing village of Port Fairy, and the coastal road hugs the Southern Ocean through to Torquay, a renowned surfing destination in Victoria.

Port Fairy & Warrnambool

Before embarking on this stretch of the drive, it is worth stopping at Port Fairy. It has some terrific beaches, parks and the iconic Griffiths Island Lighthouse to check out, which offers spectacular views of the ocean and the town.

As you drive the Great Ocean Road, make sure you stop at some of the small coastal towns along the way. One of the best of them is Warrnambool, home to The Lake Pertobe Adventure Playground – a must-visit attraction for those with kids, offering a range of activities like mini-golf, giant slides, and flying foxes.

It also has a lovely beach and between June and September you may even get lucky with spotting Southern Right Whales on their migratory journey.

Other notable towns to pop into include Peterborough and Port Campbell (another cool little playground!). Loch Ard Gorge is also an unmissable stop along the rugged coastline, as is London Bridge (London Arch).

Twelve Apostles Marine National Park

Your next stop must be at the Twelve Apostles Marine National Park on the Great Ocean Road.

As its name suggests, it is home to the iconic Twelve Apostles rock formations (of which there are only actually seven left!).

To see these magnificent limestone rock formations, various hiking trails in the park provide fantastic views and prime photography spots of them and the more expansive coastline.

Children can also enjoy spotting unique wildlife species such as echidnas, kangaroos, and bird species. Plenty of fishing, boating, and swimming opportunities exist on its various beaches.

Once you’ve had your fill of taking in the Twelve Apostles, make sure you head to the nearby visitor centre. There you will find fascinating educational exhibits on the park’s history and ecology, making it an ideal spot for kids to learn more about the natural world.

Great Otway National Park

Another great place for families to visit on the coastal route from Adelaide to Melbourne is the Great Otway National Park.

It features a diverse range of landscapes covering over 100,000 hectares of land, including rugged coastlines, towering forests, and picturesque waterfalls that you’ll find captivating.

Kids will love exploring the park’s many hiking trails, which wind through beautiful forests and lead to stunning lookout points. Just over an hour before you get to Melbourne, you’ll hit upon the vibrant city of Geelong. Although you may be keen to head on to ‘The Settlement’, it is worth exploring what Geelong offers for tourists with children.

One of the best places to visit is the Eastern Beach Reserve, which offers beautiful views of the bay and has a variety of play areas for children to make the most of.

For those who want to stretch their legs, the Geelong Botanic Gardens is another attractive option, as it features a stunning sensory garden and a greenhouse with several plant species. Alternatively, if your children have more energy to burn, a few hours at the Adventure Park – one of the biggest water parks in Victoria –  should do the trick. There you’ll find several water slides and pools.

If you plan to travel to Uluru from Sydney by car, the most direct way is via the M31 and Stuart Highway (A87).

If you drive non-stop, it is a momentous journey that would take around 30 hours. So it pays to prepare for it thoroughly.

This direct route will take you through the New South Wales Riverina and into its Fruit Bowl. Then, it will lead you through the Big Desert Wilderness before skirting the Spencer Gulf at Port Pirie and up to Port Augusta.

The latter signals the last coastal body of water you’ll see as the route veers inland through the heart of rural South Australia and into the Northern Territory before eventually taking you to Uluru. 

Uluru-kata Tjuta National Park is an incredible destination to visit all year round. However, for various reasons, some parts of the year are better than others.

Overall, the weather in this region of Central Australia can vary significantly depending on the season. So, for the best experience, plan your visit between April and September.

At this time, the afternoon temperature usually hovers between 20°C and 30°C. This cooler weather makes walking safer and more enjoyable, and there is very little rain to worry about. However, if you come at this time of year, be mindful that overnight temperatures can drop substantially during winter, so pack some warm clothes.

If you’re interested in seeing wildflowers in bloom, August and September are the best months to visit. From a visual perspective, these flowers make the drive much more enjoyable.

From October to March, the mercury regularly exceeds 35°C during the day. So if you intend to come at this time, staying safe by drinking plenty of water and avoiding walking after 11 am is essential.

These months bring storms that fill the waterholes and create magnificent waterfalls, making a Sydney to Uluru road trip very worthwhile.

However, they also tend to attract scores of flies to the desert, so it’s advisable to wear a protective head net for when you are out and about.

While it will involve a deviation from the main route, it is worth stopping in Adelaide.

The capital of South Australia, the city offers a range of family-friendly attractions and activities your kids will thank you for taking them to.

Port Augusta (1-2 nights)

The spectacular landscape of the Flinders Ranges and the Spencer Gulf is somewhere you should see. One of the best places to do this is at Port Augusta.

Its stunning coastline offers plenty of outdoor adventures, such as fishing, swimming, and boating. Whiting Beach and the Port Augusta Waterfront are popular with families wanting to do these activities. 

Coober Pedy (1-2 nights)

Coober Pedy is a famous town every tourist should visit, providing a fascinating insight into life in the Outback.

Known as the ‘opal capital of the world’, The Old Timers Mine is a terrific place to begin exploring. You can learn about the history of opal mining and even try your hand at fossicking for opals. Alice Springs (1-3 nights)

Driving in the Outback of Australia can be a unique and challenging experience due to its remote and harsh conditions. Here are some essential tips to keep in mind:

Plan your journey thoroughly, including your intended stops and fuel stations. Ensure you carry a detailed map or GPS and know the distances between towns, as they can be vast in the Outback.
Always carry plenty of food and water with you, especially in the Outback where commodities for these are scarce. Bringing at least 10 litres of water per person per day you intend to be on the road and at least three days’ worth of extra food.
Fuel stations can be infrequent in remote areas, so keeping your fuel tank topped up whenever you can is crucial. Carry extra fuel in jerry cans, especially for longer stretches between fuel stations.
Pack a well-stocked emergency kit, including a first aid kit, spare tires, tools, a jack, and a spare vehicle key. Carry extra food, a fully charged mobile phone, a satellite phone or emergency beacon, a flashlight, and batteries.
Inform someone of your travel plans, including your intended route, estimated arrival time, and when you expect to check in with them. This way, if you encounter any issues, someone will be aware and able to assist if needed.
The Outback can experience extreme heat during the day and cold temperatures at night. Pack appropriate clothing, including hats, sunscreen, sunglasses for sun protection, and warm clothing for chillier evenings.

A road trip from Sydney to Adelaide is one of Australia’s quintessential driving adventures. 

During this multi-day road trip, you can visit the country’s capital city of Canberra (that’s right, Australia’s capital is not Sydney or Melbourne!) and witness the breathtaking landscapes of The Riverina. 

You can also treat yourself to authentic Australian experiences, such as tasting the nation’s best vanilla slice and even trying your luck at prospecting for gold! 

Overall, the drive through south eastern Australia is a magical, mystical adventure that will give you a fascinating insight into some of the history and culture of this part of the land Down Under. 

Overall, the drive from the Sydney CBD to the Adelaide CBD covers a distance of approximately 1375 km (855 miles). 

The most direct way to drive to Adelaide from Sydney is via the Sturt Highway and Mallee Highway, which will take about 15 hours to traverse if you drive non-stop without taking a break. 

If you are short on time, that route is the best option, and you could do it in two days. However, if you have a few days at your disposal, it is worth taking three or four days to complete the journey, as that will give you more time to take in the sights. 

This primary course will lead you from Sydney to Adelaide via the NSW part of The Riverina, and areas are known as the Fruit Bowl and the Big Desert Wilderness. 

If you take this drive to Adelaide, you’ll be treated to beautiful views of the rolling landscape and a flavor of the rich aboriginal heritage of the area. You can also stop at remote, small towns like Manangatang and Keri Keri that showcase the ‘real’ Australia. 

As well as this primary course, you can take a couple of scenic routes on a road trip from Sydney to Adelaide. They include via the NSW portion of the Riverina or through country Victoria, which allows you to see another state in Australia. 

How Long Is the Drive From Sydney to Adelaide? 

The driving time from Sydney to Adelaide depends on you, particularly what route you take, what you want to see, and how much time you have available. 

As mentioned, the direct route will take you about 15 hours to drive non-stop, which is a tough ask for anyone, especially if you are traveling with kids. Therefore, you should factor in two days as a minimum.

However, as it is a long journey with several points of interest, we recommend you schedule at least 5 to 7 days.  

Along the way, you will encounter diverse landscapes, several stunning geological wonders, and plenty of quaint towns. So, this length of time will enable you to see quite a few sites and spend some quality time at one or two of them per day. 

There is no best time of year to drive from Sydney to Adelaide, only more preferred times, as this journey is lovely to undertake all year round.

However, many travellers opt to make this road trip in the Australian autumn and spring seasons, which fall between March and May and September and November, respectively. During these times, the weather is generally mild, with comfortable temperatures and lower chances of rainfall.

Bendigo (1 night)

Bendigo is a four-and-a-half-hour drive from Wagga Wagga, so it is a fabulous place to stop overnight or for a couple of hours.

We recommend overnight because there are excellent hotels, restaurants, shops, and services here. This historical city in the central Victorian goldfields also boasts stunning architecture, a rich cultural heritage, and a thriving arts scene worth exploring.

Art lovers will also enjoy the Bendigo Art Gallery, which houses a vast Australian and international artwork collection. Likewise, those wanting to strike it rich can explore the historic Central Deborah Gold Mine, which offers guided tours and a chance to experience life as a gold miner in the 19th century. You can even pan for gold and can keep anything you find!

Ouyen (Half Day)

Murray Bridge (1 night)

Although it is just an hour’s train from Adelaide, it is worth spending the night at Murray Bridge in the Murraylands region of South Australia.

An excellent place for stargazing, the area surrounding Murray Bridge has minimal light pollution, making it an ideal spot for observing the stars and the night sky.
