1. Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge

Set right on the Mexican border over the Lower Rio Grande Valley, the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge is a perfect place to head to if you love all things wildlife-related.

Home to over 400 species of birds, Laguna Atascosa boasts the largest number of bird species in the entire country.

As if that weren’t reason enough to convince you to pay this place a visit, it’s also the home to several endangered species such as the Texas ocelot and the Gulf Coast jaguarundi, making it a haven for those keen to get close to the animals that roam the Lone State State.

2. Cathedral of Junk

It’s not exactly a secret that Austin prides itself on its quirky vibes, and the Cathedral of Junk is a prime example of how weird and wonderful the city can get.

Set in the backyard of a local named Vince, this cathedral is exactly what its name sounds like – a “cathedral” created from random junk. Vince began “building” it (or his “clubhouse”, as he often calls it) back in the late 80s.

Over the years, it has continued to evolve, both by Vince’s efforts as well as locals who fell in love with the project and wanted to donate their very own junk to the cause.

3. Waco Mammoth National Monument

Keen to take a trip back in time to the Prehistoric era? Waco Mammoth National Monument is the home to the largest concentration of mammoth fossils to have died after a big natural disaster, and there are so many of them around that you won’t even know where to start looking!

Most of the mammoth fossils you’ll find here are said to be the result of a mudslide that took place almost 70,000 years ago (although that’s just a theory). As you explore the site, you’ll get plenty of opportunities to get close and personal to these gigantic extinct animals.

Moreover, you’ll also be able to see several other fossils, including those of a saber-tooth cat and bulls.

4. Cadillac Ranch

Founded back in the 70s, Cadillac Ranch is a huge art installation on Route 66 that features a collection of graffiti-covered Cadillacs that are partially buried in the ground.

The installation’s aim was originally to represent the American Dream, but today, most visitors come to see the incredibly photogenic scenery it provides!

6. Enchanted Rock

Located in the middle of the alluring Texas Hill Country, Enchanted Rock is a gorgeous pink granite mountain whose beauty is guaranteed to leave you awe-struck.

7. Hamilton Pool

The two main routes from Houston to the Grand Canyon are north on I-40 or slightly farther south on I-10. I-40 is usually picked since you’ll pass through Albuquerque, but for those who have already visited Albuquerque or if you like the idea of venturing closer to the Mexican border and including Big Bend, then the I-10 route is a good option. 

The drives are about the same in terms of length, and we’ve highlighted some spots along both routes so you can make the most of your drive from Houston to the Grand Canyon. 

Houston to Grand Canyon: On the I-40 Route 

If you take the northern route from Houston to the Grand Canyon along I-40, here are some of the parks and cities worth visiting along the way. 

Fort Worth, TX

On the surface, Fort Worth is a fun and modern city, but you’ll also discover a fascinating historical side. 

Once a trading post on the Chisolm Trail, you can now take a step back into the past at the National Cowgirl Museum or learn about early pioneers at the Fort Worth Hall of Fame. Kids will especially enjoy seeing the twice-daily cattle drive! 

About four hours from Houston, Fort Worth makes a great first stop on your drive to the Grand Canyon.

Amarillo, TX

With an authentic Wild West feel, Amarillo has some cool historic landmarks tastefully combined with a sophisticated modern feel. It’s one of the best stops along the Historic Route 66, and has a bit of everything from upscale dining venues to cowboy adventures. 

It’s not a bad idea to spend a few nights in Amarillo during your drive from Houston to the Grand Canyon. 

This city is the gateway to Palo Duro Canyon, the second-longest canyon in the United States. Just because you’re seeing the Grand Canyon doesn’t mean you should pass up Palo Duro! Plus, it’s usually less crowded than the Grand Canyon, so you can enjoy a more natural experience. 

Cadillac Ranch is another iconic site in Amarillo. These ten painted and decorated Cadillacs have turned into a permanent installation of desert art and have been featured in a number of movies and music videos. It’s a great place to get some photos of your Southwest road trip and one of the most unique places to visit in Texas!

Tucumari and Route 66 Monument, NM

As you drive along Route 66, you’ll want to stop at the Route 66 Monument and Route 66 Museum located in Tucumcari, New Mexico. 

The museum is fascinating to learn about the origins of this famous road trip in the Southwest, plus there are some awesome classic cars on display that both kids and adults will enjoy! 

If you have more time to spend in Tucumari, you might also want to take a driving tour of the city to spot all the amazing murals (over 40 in total) which decorate many of the buildings. There are a few motor inns making it worthy of an overnight stop. 

On your way out of town, be sure to stop for some unique souvenirs at Tee Pee Curios to commemorate your drive along Route 66.

Albuquerque

Visiting Albuquerque could be an entire trip in itself, so it’s worth setting some time aside to explore this city as you make your way from Houston to the Grand Canyon. 

Unless you’re afraid of heights, everyone should try going on one of the famous hot air balloon rides over the city for some stunning views of the desert landscape. 

Back on the ground, there’s, even more, to explore at the Albuquerque Zoo, which is a popular attraction for families, or the Petroglyph National Monument, where you can learn about the fascinating prehistory of the region. 

Albuquerque has a great combination of modern style and historic charm. You’ll feel like you’ve stepped between worlds as you make your way between the fascinating Old Town, filled with adobe buildings dating back to the city’s founding in 1706 to the upscale shops and restaurants of the vibrant downtown area.

Petrified Forest National Park

Although it’s not as well-known as some national parks, Petrified Forest offers a unique experience that will probably surprise you. 

This is the only national park directly on Route 66, and it’s well worth a stop as you make your way from Houston to the Grand Canyon. 

The unique landscape of the park is covered in colorful remains of petrified wood and encompasses some areas of the Painted Desert of Arizona. Just driving through the park itself will give you an appreciation for the amazing landscape, and there are some great overlooks along the way which are perfect for photographs. 

If you have a bit more time, you can get out to hike some of the trails or stop by the Painted Desert Visitor Center, which has some of the fossils discovered in the Petrified Forest. 

Note that there is no camping permitted of any sort in Petrified Forest National Park. You’ll want to look at options in Holbrook as your nearest town of size.

Meteor Crater National Landmark

The enormous Meteor Crater about 40 miles east of Flagstaff is one of the most incredible landmarks in the United States, especially considering its truly out-of-this-world formation! 

Almost a mile wide and about 550 feet deep, it’s hard to imagine the catastrophic impact this meteor had when it crashed into the Earth about 50,000 years ago. Scientists estimate that the explosion would have been more devastating than an atomic bomb. 

It’s definitely worth getting tickets so you can walk right to the edge of the crater to appreciate the impressive size for yourself. Kids will also love visiting the Discovery Center & Space Museum, which has fun interactive experiences, including a 4D immersive theater!

You could press on through to the Grand Canyon from here, but we’d recommend you stay in nearby Winslow overnight or head on to Flagstaff before completing your Grand Canyon road trip.

Before we dive into your end destination, let’s see where you can stop on the more southern route, before reaching Flagstaff.

Houston to Grand Canyon: On the I-10 W Route

Taking the southern I-10 route while driving from Houston to the Grand Canyon will give you a chance to see some of the impressive landscape of the Southwest. The downside, there are some much longer driving distances and fewer accommodation options en route.

Nonetheless, those up for a unique adventure, here are a few of the top places to stop along this scenic drive to the Grand Canyon from Texas: 

San Antonio

With a great combination of museums, delicious Tex-Mex cuisine, and fun outdoor activities, San Antonio is a perfect place to stop for an afternoon on your drive from Houston to the Grand Canyon. 

Visit the famous Alamo site to learn about the history which makes San Antonio stand out in U.S. history. Afterward, explore the River Walk, where you can see other historic buildings, and find a restaurant to refuel before you continue your drive.

Big Bend National Park

If you’re on a road trip from Houston to the Grand Canyon, it’s not a bad idea to set some time aside to explore other national parks along the way. In terms of scenic national parks, Big Bend definitely ranks high on the list!  

This stunning park in southwest Texas combines the craggy landscape of the Chisos Mountains with the rugged beauty of the Chihuahuan Desert. 

It’s well worth camping or spending a few nights in one of the nearby lodges to hike and explore the cliffs of Santa Elena Canyon or relax and rejuvenate in the natural thermal hot springs in the park.

Gila National Forest

Another treasure of the Southwest that’s worth visiting on your drive from Houston to the Grand Canyon is Gila National Forest. 

There are endless opportunities for hiking the trails to get views of Whitewater Canyon and the rugged desert mountain scenery. Gila National Forest is actually New Mexico’s first designated wilderness area and covers almost 3.3 million acres! 

New Mexico is already famous for its beautiful night sky, but there might not be a better place for stargazing than at the Cosmic Campground in Gila National Forest, which is designated an International Dark Sky Sanctuary! 

Other attractions of this wilderness area include natural hot springs, horse-back riding tours of the mountains, and amazing swimming holes located in some of the canyons. 

Pro Tip: There aren’t any major cities near Gila National Forest, so if you’re hoping to spend a day or two here on your trip from Houston to the Grand Canyon, your best options are camping or staying at one of the lodges near the wilderness area.

Flagstaff

Not far from the Grand Canyon itself, Flagstaff is one of the top cities to visit along the famous Route 66. 

The city has a combination of outdoor activities, historic landmarks, and modern flare. It’s also a certified dark sky city and is a popular place for astronomers and night-sky enthusiasts. 

Visit the Lowell Observatory and learn about the discovery of Pluto, which happened right in Flagstaff! 

Thanks to its elevation, Flagstaff has cooler temperatures than other places in Arizona, and outdoor activities include hiking and swimming in the summer or skiing at the Arizona Snowbowl in the winter. 

It’s also a great base to explore some of the historic sites of the Southwest, such as the ancient pueblos and cliff dwellings of early Native American tribes who lived in the area. 

Search Accommodation Options In Flagstaff

The South Rim entrance to the Grand Canyon is only about an hour and a half away from Flagstaff, and there are numerous guided tours that depart from the city. 

Where To Stay Visiting Grand Canyon

Many choose to stay in Flagstaff and then day trip into the Grand Canyon, though be warned, if you’re doing this, you want to set off super early or later in the afternoon as the queues from around 9:00 AM onwards are LOOOOOONG!

If you weren’t quick enough with a national parks lodge booking, a better option is to stay in Tusayan, just outside the South Entrance. There’s a reasonable range of affordable hotels, motels, and RV Parks here, putting you at the gateway to the greatest natural wonder in the United States.

• Note that this US road trip itinerary will see you crossing several time zones! Texas follows CST/CDT, New Mexico follows MST/MDT, whilst Arizona stays in MST year round; so in summer, you’ll be winding your clocks back twice!

Driving from Houston to Big Bend can be a lot more exciting than you realize, thanks to the interesting cities and cool parks along the way. 

Whether you’re looking for a few pit stops between Houston and Big Bend or hoping to expand your road trip into a week-long adventure, this guide will highlight all the best places to visit.

Distance From Houston To Big Bend National Park

It’s about 600 miles between Houston and Big Bend National Park. Depending on whether you take some detours, this could add more miles to the trip. 

Visiting Austin is highly recommended, in which case the drive from Houston to Big Bend will be closer to 650 miles.

How Long Do I Need Driving From Houston To Big Bend National Park?

A non-stop drive between Houston and Big Bend National Park would take about 10 hours. Although this is doable in a day if you start early, we’d highly recommend taking the drive a bit slower and breaking it up into a few sections. 

There are plenty of places to stop in between Houston and Big Bend, from cities to state parks, so it’s easy to find camping or hotel accommodation along the way.

We’ve included some time estimates here if you’re looking for some good points to break up the drive and potentially stay overnight:

Best Time Of Year To Drive From Houston To Big Bend National Park

Spring is considered the ideal time of year to visit Big Bend National Park, thanks to the pleasant weather. However, you’ll also need to deal with the most tourists during this time, especially around mid-March when a lot of schools have spring break. 

Summers in Texas can be very hot, which can make it more difficult to enjoy a hike in Big Bend unless you’re an early-morning person and like to be active before the sun warms things up too much. 

Fall can be a good time since the temperatures have started to cool down, but you also won’t need to deal with the chance of things freezing overnight which will often happen during winter nights in Texas.

Best Stops on a Houston to Big Bend Road Trip

As you make your way west from Houston to Big Bend, here are some of the spots you might want to stop at. Some of these are good for a quick break, while for other places, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to spend a night or two to get the chance to explore!

San Antonio

About three hours west of Houston, San Antonio is one of the top places to visit on a drive to Big Bend. Known as the Alamo City, San Antonio has a unique combination of modernity and history that blend to create a fun and diverse atmosphere. 

The historical site of the Alamo is one of the top attractions of the city. To enter the Alamo church, you need to get a free-timed ticket. Keep in mind that during weekends and tourist season, these spots can fill up quickly, so it’s best to reserve well in advance! 

After seeing the Alamo, you can stroll down the San Antonio River Walk and check out some of the shops and local Tex-Mex eateries. You could either make San Antonio an afternoon stop or spend the night and then continue your Houston to Big Bend drive the following day.

• You’ll cut around 2 hours off the total journey time if you skip the next two stops; you could always drive via Austin one way and San Antonio the other to shave a few miles off the total journey.

Austin

Although visiting Austin requires a slight detour from the shortest route between Houston and Big Bend National Park, we’d highly recommend adding this stop to your trip. 

The capital of Texas is known for its live music scene as well as beautiful parks for hiking, swimming, and boating. 

Whether you’re traveling with kids and want to check out the fun Austin Duck Adventures tour, or you’re more interested in visiting the jazz and blues venues, there’s something for everyone to see and do. 

We’d recommend making sure you plan time to see the famous Congress Bridge Bats. Every night nearly 1.5 million bats fly from their home under Congress Bridge (and help rid the city of mosquitoes)!

There’s enough to see and do in Austin that we’d recommend spending a night or two. Continuing on from Austin to Big Bend, you’ll have roughly 8 more hours of driving if you don’t stop.

Pedernales Falls State Park

This picturesque state park is about an hour from Austin and a perfect stop to stretch your legs (or spend a night camping if you’re looking for more adventure!). 

The park is popular for hiking, mountain biking, paddling, and river rafting, not to mention having some of the unique scenery in the Texas Hill Country. 

Pedernales River offers a variety of waterfalls, from the most iconic cascading fall, which requires a hike to reach, to gentler, tumbling falls over smooth rocky surfaces. Often the water will be low enough that you’ll be able to walk across the falls themselves and explore the rocky bends and crannies formed by erosion from the river. 

There are also nice picnic areas and a visitor center, making it a pleasant place to stop for lunch during your drive from Houston to Big Bend. 

South Llano River State Park

The slow-moving South Llano River makes this State Park ideal for families in search of water activities. Canoes, kayaks, and inner tubes can be rented on-site for an afternoon of floating down the river! 

Fishing is also a popular activity in South Llano, and there is fishing gear available to borrow for use in the park if you don’t want to take up space by packing your own. 

On hot summer afternoons, you probably won’t want to get out of the water, but if you come during cooler seasons, there are also some great hiking trails that are worth exploring.

Seminole Canyon State Park

Seminole Canyon is known for its unique pictograph drawings on the canyon walls left behind by historical civilizations. 

Not only is the ancient rock art incredible to see, but the hiking trails along the Rio Grande are also absolutely beautiful! Keep in mind that to see the canyon area itself you need to be part of a guided tour, but many of the other park trails are openly accessible to everyone. 

Seminole Canyon is a great place to stop for an afternoon to stretch your legs, or the park also has some campsites with showers and restroom facilities if you want to spend a night by the Rio Grande. 

Big Bend National Park

As you make your way west from Houston to Big Bend National Park, you’ll enter the Chisos Mountains, which form a scenic landscape combining rugged, craggy outcroppings and desert shrubs. 

The Rio Grande River runs right through the park, which offers great opportunities for swimming, canoeing, and kayaking which are perfect activities for hot summer afternoons. Plus, up in the mountains, you can also enjoy slightly cooler temperatures (usually by 10 or 15 degrees) than in the rest of Texas. 

Santa Elena Canyon Trail is one of the top hikes in the park, which takes you through roughly two miles of stunning canyon curves (about 1,500 feet high!). Keep in mind that this hike is a bit tricker with children, so it’s best for teenagers to adults. 

In Rio Grande Village, you can also find some interesting pictographs which have been painted on the rock walls by historic cultures in the area. Rio Grande Village is also known for its natural thermal hot springs which are particularly popular during cooler months. 

Planning Your Stay In Big Bend National Park

The park has an admission fee of $30 for standard vehicle, valid for 7 consecutive days. You can use any America The Beautiful Pass (or families, see if you’re eligible for a 4th grader pass!)

There are several developed camping and RV sites in Big Bend, as well as back country camping for travelers who are hoping for more wilderness adventure. 

No need to worry, though, if you’d rather not stay in a tent during your Houston to Big Bend road trip. Terlingua is one of the closest towns to Big Bend and is a popular place to stay. Plus, it’s known for its historic ghost town where you can visit the abandoned buildings (if you feel brave enough). 

The Chisos Mountains Lodge offers simple, rustic-style accommodation in the park itself if you’d rather not camp; keep in mind that reservations fill up quickly, especially during the spring season.

During the spring, some parks can experience cool weather phenomena. They can seem dormant most of the year and come to life with bursts of color in the spring.

1. Shenandoah National Park

Location: Virginia

Spring is a major event in the famous Shenandoah National Park. The bees are buzzing, the birds are singing, and of course, the flowers are blooming. 2. Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Location: North Carolina/Tennessee 

As the winter begins to melt away, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park comes alive. One of the major draws to the Smokies is their blooming wildflowers. No matter where you head in the park, you’re bound to see beautiful colors throughout, making it an easy choice as one of the best US national parks to visit in spring. It’s also a great time to see wildlife enjoying their own spring rituals.  

Consider joining the Wildflower Pilgrimage in the Smokies. This annual event has many guided tours and events throughout the park focusing on the beautiful blooming flowers. This coming year, it takes place on May 1-4, 2024 making it one of the best national parks to visit this April. 

The spring is also a perfect time for hiking, biking, and kayaking in the Smokies. Not too hot, not too cold, but just right! However, check ahead and be aware that the spring weather can change quickly, and it’s known to rain during the spring months. Pack accordingly, and don’t let that stop you from enjoying the park.

A great alternative plan for the rain is to see the park from the dry comfort of your own car. 3. Grand Canyon National Park

Location: Arizona  

Springtime in the Grand Canyon National Park is seriously one of the best times to visit this bucket list item. During the spring, the canyon comes alive with the bright blooming colors of flowering plants, cacti, of course, and even lovely flowering desert trees. 

It can be a mix of weather during the spring season. So, it’s possible to catch a late snowstorm or fog blanketing this geographical wonder. But hey, both make for insanely cool photo ops! Spring’s longer days bring more daylight to the Grand Canyon, making the best hikes even better.

4. Saguaro National Park

Location: Arizona 

Not too hot, not too cold, but just right! That’s the weather you’ll find at one of the best national parks in the deep desert this spring, so why not see Saguaro for yourself? 

Saguaro is one of the best national parks to visit in April because that’s when wildflowers are in full bloom. But If you’re looking to visit later in the season, you’ll be in luck as the cactus flowers of the giant saguaro cacti bloom between mid-May and early June.

Another plus is that peak season happens in winter due to its warmer weather, so you’ll see fewer crowds in the park during the spring. 

Spring is also a great time for wildlife viewing. It’s possible to see Gila Monsters underfoot and keep an eye out for Rattlesnakes too. Bird watching is great fun with Gila-Woodpeckers and Gilded Flickers.  

You can hike, bike, or drive through the park. Some of the best hikes in Saguaro are Loma Verde Loop and the Freeman Homestead Trail. Or give your feet a rest on the scenic drive of the Cactus Forest Loop.

5. Death Valley National Park

6. Redwood National Park

Location: California  

Redwood National Park is hands-down one of the best places to visit in spring. It’s here that you can see some of the tallest trees on the planet. It’s so special that it’s even designated a UNESCO Heritage Site.  

Although the Redwoods are a favorite destination year-round, it’s during the spring season that’s really special. The first key thing is that there are fewer crowds than in the summer. It’s also less wet and rainy than in the winter. Early spring sees temperatures in the 40s and 50s. But by late spring, you’re likely to see temps in the 60s and even 70°F. 

Spring brings the reawakening of nature. It’s the best time to see blooming wildflowers and wildlife viewing of bald eagles, Roosevelt elk, and even sea lions out on the nearby beaches.    

Redwood has one of the most beautiful scenic drives in the country. You’ll love driving along the Redwood Coast, where you’ll see both the old-growth trees and the stunning Pacific Coastline. And if you head inland, you can find hidden gems to hike right off the highway.

7. Big Bend National Park

Location: Texas 

One of the key things to do in Big Bend National Park is to hike its killer trails over the desert terrain. That’s why it’s one of the best national parks in spring. It’s during the cooler weather of the spring season that conditions are ideal for hiking, not like in the summer when it’s just too darn hot.

You’ll have tons of sunshine and daytime temperatures in the 70s and 80s °F. It can even reach 90°F late in the season. 

Spring is also the perfect time to kayak the Rio Grande or soak in the Langford Hot Springs. Bluebonnets bloom throughout texas in the springtime, so you can’t miss them. On the drive to Big Bend and in the park, you’ll see how they color the landscape. 

Far from the light pollution of cities, Big Bend is a fabulous place to stargaze. To get the best views of the night sky, consider camping in the park.

8. Joshua Tree National Park

Location: California 

As a national park in a desert setting, springtime is just about the perfect time to visit Joshua Tree. It’s when you’ll have cooler weather than in the summer, reaching up into the 70s and 80s during the day.  

The other major advantage of visiting Joshua Tree National Park in the spring is that you’ll get a chance to see the beauty of spring in bloom. Flowers from cacti and desert plants are in full force during the spring. You’ll see blankets of yellow and white flowers dotted with bright blues and reds too.

Lucky for us, the wildflowers tend to bloom at lower elevations beginning in February, while upper elevations will see peak flowers blooming closer to June. This way, you’re likely to see colorful flowers at any time of the spring season.  

Spring is also a great time for wildlife viewing in Joshua Tree. Keep an eye out for white-tailed antelope squirrels, lizards, and coyotes.

9. Arches National Park

Location: Utah   

Arches National Park is another top-of-the-list best US national park to visit in the spring. And many people agree! This beautiful landscape is great to see any time of the year, really. But the springtime is when the temperatures begin to warm up, averaging between 60-80°F. So it won’t be too hot, like in the summer, or too chilly, like in the winter.  

With perfect temps and lots of sunshine, you’ll be set to explore the park and see the awesome geological formations. Delicate Arch and Landscape Arch are the ones not to miss. But they can become really crowded during the spring. It’s probably best to see these when it’s a bit less populated, like first thing in the morning. After that, head to other places in the park, such as High Park Avenue.  

You will love the trip along Scenic Drive Road. You can keep stopping at various viewpoints to your heart’s content and really take it all in.

Let’s be real, Zion National Park is on everyone’s bucket list. The truth is that, YES, it really is that awesome! You should definitely make it happen. So, why not make the trip for spring break?  

During the springtime, you’ll have lots of sun and warm temperatures, perfect for hiking and getting to key spots like Angel’s Landing. If you are a hiking fanatic, The Narrows is super cool to conquer, just come prepared with the right gear to hike in the water, which is colder in the spring.  

Zion has so many different trails for every hiking level. So you can definitely find the best hikes that are right for everyone in your family.

Entry Permits: If you’re planning to visit Angel’s Landing be aware that you’ll need to enter the seasonal lottery some months in advance. The Spring lottery opens 1 to 20 January. Only a limited number of hiking slots are made available a day in advance.

Pro Tip: Consider parking in Springdale and taking the free shuttle to Zion. It’s the best way to bypass the crazy traffic getting into the park. The shuttle runs from March to October.

6. See The Second-Largest Canyon In The United States 

Nicknamed “The Grand Canyon of Texas,” Palo Duro is the second-largest canyon in the entire state. 

Because of its multicolored layers of rocks, the canyon’s beauty is absolutely breathtaking. Texas may not be the first place that pops to mind when you think of a warm winter getaway, but the Lone Star State actually boasts the largest undeveloped barrier island in the world, which also happens to be the only tropical island you’ll find in the Southwest United States. 

South Padre Island is connected to the mainland via an overseas highway, making it easy to access cities like Corpus Christi by car.  

The island is made up of more than 130,000 acres and divides the Laguna from the Gulf of Mexico. Despite its National Seashore status, South Padre Island is very welcoming to human visitors, and its humongous size means it encompasses a plethora of ecosystems. Sand dunes, calm beaches, grasslands, and more are just a few of the landscapes you’ll get to see here!

1. Miami to Key West Overseas Highway (Highway 1), Florida 

Taking you all the way from Miami to Key West through over-the-ocean bridges that connect the Keys, this mesmerizing highway is one of the most classic southern states road trips and a favorite for those who love sunny days and endless beaches. 

It goes without saying that the scenery along its 113 miles is as spectacular as it gets. Each and every mile, you’ll be treated to beautiful ocean views and white sand beaches as you make your way to Key West. 

While the trip can be completed in less than a day, it’s recommended to spend several days on this trip as there are plenty of incredible destinations worth making a stop at to explore. Top highlights include Key Largo, Islamorada, Bahia Honda State Park, and the underwater John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. 

The best time of the year to do this southern states road trip is between March and May when hurricane season is over and the winter crowds have tapered off. 

2. Skyline Drive, Virginia 

Starting in Richmond, the Skyline Drive will have you seeing some of the best the state of Virginia has to offer as you make your way to the heart of the Appalachian Mountains.  

Even though this road is only 105 miles long, it can very well be turned into a multi-day southern road trip as there are plenty of stops worth making along the way for hiking aficionados. 

The drive will take you along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains inside Shenandoah National Park. All along the highway, you’ll find plenty of trailheads to park your car and go for a hike, as well as several campsites for those who want to spend the night inside the park.  

The best time to do the Skyline Drive is September through November, when the park gets wrapped up in gorgeous fall foliage. 

3. Chipley to Rainbow Springs State Park, Florida 

If you’re up for a few days spent chasing waterfalls, this southern states road trip through Florida is guaranteed to please. 

Starting in Chipley Falling Waters State Park, you’ll make your way all the way to Rainbow Springs State Park. Along the route, you’ll get to see the highest waterfalls in Florida, gaze at plenty of natural sinkholes, and spend a few hours exploring Torreya State Park.

Moreover, you’ll also get the option to stop at plenty of other parks such as the Big Shoals State Park and Devil’s Millhopper Geological State Park, where you’ll be able to see a series of waterfalls crashing down into a sinkhole that contains an actual mini rainforest!  

This road trip can be done any time of the year but keep in mind that the summer months are usually the warmest and wettest. With that said, summers are when the waterfalls look the most impressive due to the rain, so take your pick! 

4. Pineywoods Autumn Trail, Texas 

Vineyards, fairytale-like forests, and autumn colors are the staples of the Pineywood Autumn Trail in Texas. 

While it’s much lesser known than other southern states road trip routes, this 145-mile loop between Palestine and Athens will have you passing plenty of forests and parks worth making a stop at to take a walk and truly take in the golden and crimson tones. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also fly above the fall foliage at Texas ZipLine Adventures! 

As if that weren’t enough, Pineywood is also dotted by tons of idyllic lakes and vineyards. This route includes the Tara Vineyard & Winery for those keen to get a taste of Texas’s hidden wine country, but if you still haven’t gotten your fill of grapes, you can continue the road trip onwards over the Piney Woods Wine Trail, which is dotted by over 20 wineries.  

Autumn is definitely the best time to do this road trip, especially considering it’s a mecca for fall hues. If you’re unable to do it at this time of the year, spring is another great choice for mild weather and colorful blooms. 

5. Tuscaloosa to Eutaw, Alabama 

If you love all things vintage, artsy vibes, places that feel as local as they get, and historical architecture, this Alabama scenic road trip is everything you’ve been looking for. 

As you make your way from Tuscaloosa to Eutaw in West Alameda, you’ll pass plenty of antique shops, art galleries galore, and a plethora of antebellum mansions, not to mention you’ll also get the chance to make a few detours. 

A few highlights of this road trip include the Courthouse Square in Eutaw, the lakes that surround the town of Livingston, and getting to drive over the Alamuchee-Bellamy Covered Bridge, a wooden bridge that is said to be haunted by an outlaw who was hanged there! 

Spring and fall are the best time of the year to do this road trip as the weather is mild and comfortable. Summers are also pleasant for warm-weather lovers, although this is the high season in Alabama and cities like Tuscaloosa can get pretty crowded. 

6. Haunted Oklahoma, Oklahoma 

Love all things haunted? If you consider yourself a bit of a daredevil, this deep south road trip is definitely one to remember!  

This sensational road trip travels through some of Oklahoma’s most haunted cities, including Tulsa, Ponca City, Alva, and El Reno before looping its way back to Oklahoma City. 

All of these spots are great to spend the night in, but the main reason to visit them is to check out a few of its most haunted buildings. Highlights in Tulsa include the Gandini’s Circus in Edmond, an abandoned carnival, the Hex House, and Cain’s Ballroom.

In Ponca City, visit the Constantine Theater & Poncan Theater, which are said to be incredibly haunted and don’t forget to check out the Cherokee Strip Museum in Alva, which is believed to be extremely ghost-ridden. 

The best time to do this Oklahoma road trip is from late March to early June and September to November when the weather is temperate. Bonus points if you do it in late October for Halloween! 

7. Outer Banks Scenic Byway, North Carolina 

Starting in Nags Head, this scenic byway runs all the way to Ocracoke Island and back to the mainland (yes, a ferry journey is included here!). 

As one of the most iconic routes in North Carolina, this road trip in the southern US is a great addition to your bucket list, taking you through one of the most popular vacation destinations on the US east coast. 

Along the way, you’ll get to visit Bodie Island, Cape Hatteras, and if you like hiking, you can also spend a few hours exploring the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. Ocracoke Island is another must-do stop for beautiful beaches, and if you’re feeling up for a day trip, you can hire a boat to the alluring Portsmouth Island.  

The best time of the year to do this road trip is between April to mid-June and early September to late October. 

8. Haunted Louisiana, Louisiana 

Another of the best southern USA road trips for those who love all things spooky, this incredible route will have you checking out some of the most beautiful (and haunted) sites in a state that is already infamous for its paranormal activity. 

The route begins in Keachi and ends in Fort Proctor, following mostly the I-49. Along the way, you’ll get to make stops at deserted schools, sugar plantations, and plenty of mills. There’s even an abandoned Six Flax on the way – it’s illegal to enter the premises, but even the sight from the road is enough to send chills down your spine! 

Must-do stops include Laurel Valley Sugar Plantation, Fort Proctor, Elise Reuss Memorial School, Charles Boldt Paper Mill, Kisatchie High School, and Keachi Women’s College.  

Louisiana is best visited between mid-February to early May and from October to December for mild weather. This road trip is a great idea for a Halloween adventure, or you can combine it with a Mardi Gras trip in February instead! 

9. Tennessee Waterfalls Road Trip, Tennessee 

If you love nature and all things waterfalls, the Tennessee Waterfalls route is one of the best southern road trips to take for outdoor adventures. 

This gorgeous drive will show you some of the best the Great Smoky Mountains have to offer. The drive starts at Cumming Falls on the Blackburn Fork State Scenic River, where you can freshen up and swim before continuing to Burgess Falls to check out four different waterfalls. 

Next, you can make a stop at Falls Creek Falls and finish up the trip at Twin Falls to end the trip with a bang!

10. Hilton Head to Charleston, South Carolina 

Starting on Hilton Head, an island just off the coast of South Carolina, this epic road trip will have you seeing the absolute best the Palmetto State has to offer. 

The drive is technically only 90 miles long, but there are plenty of wonderful spots to overnight in if you have the time. As you make your way to Charleston, you’ll get the chance to enjoy plenty of coastal scenery and small-town charm.

Stops worth making include Hunting Island State Park for secluded beaches, Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge for wildlife spotting, and Beaufort for antebellum mansions. 

Summer is the best time to do this road trip for perfect beach weather. 

11. Midland Trail, West Virginia 

Gorgeous nature, charming historical towns, local art, pioneer history, pretty waterfalls, and plenty of mystery are just a few of the aspects that make this deep south USA road trip a true gem. 

Covering over 100 miles between Charleston and Sam Black Church in West Virginia, this scenic byway crosses some of the most rugged areas of the Mountain State. The road is believed to have been originally carved out into the mountains by buffalo and native tribes of the area. 

Some of the top highlights to check out for nature include Hawks Nest State Park and New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, while historical sites that are musts include The Ruffner Log Cabin, Salt Village, Old Stone House, and the colonial town of Lewisburg. 

Fall is a great time to do this road trip for beautiful autumn colors, but spring and late summer are perfect for comfortable weather. 

12. The Blues Highway, Tennessee and Mississippi 

Along this epic road trip, you’ll get to visit some of the places where rock and roll, rhythm and blues, jazz, and country music were born, inspired by the melodies of the cotton fields of the Mississippi Delta. 

The Blues Highway follows Route 61 between Memphis and Vicksburg, taking you right into the heart of American Music.  

Must-do stops include the Gateway to the Blues Museum in Tunica, the Delta Blues Museum and Ground Zero Blues Club in Clarksdale, and the Back in the Day Museum in Greenwood, where you can also visit the grave of Robert Johnson. 

Memphis is full of kid-friendly attractions including the acclaimed Children’s Museum and Shelby Farms Park, one of the largest urban parks in America. Ride the trolley and stroll historic Beale Street during the day.

Further on, make a stop at Yazoo County for authentic Bentonia Blues at the Blue Front Café before heading to Indianola to check out the B.B. King Museum. The Mississippi Grammy Museum in Cleveland is also a treat, and a can’t-miss stop is the Dockery Plantation, where the genre was born!
