What is the Distance Between Melbourne and Perth?

The driving distance from Melbourne to Perth via the most direct route, which includes the Nullarbor Plain, is approximately 3,400 kilometres. 

If you were to drive it non-stop without taking a break, it would take you roughly 37 hours.

This drive time would increase if you decided to detour into rural Victoria’s heart. You can pass through famous country towns like Bendigo and Ouyen before rejoining the direct route on the A1 just after Crystal Brook, should you want to do this.

Another detour you can take is around the Eyre Peninsula in SA. To get there, you must head off towards Whyalla, which will eventually take you down to the gorgeous scenery around Port Lincoln and Coffin Bay, before heading up to Streaky Bay and rejoining the main route a few km from Ceduna.

The park is located in the state’s western part and is renowned for its rugged mountain ranges, ancient rock formations, diverse wildlife and opportunities to connect with nature.

Eucla

You’ll find several roadhouses within the small towns that line the Nullarbor where you can fuel up. However, should you want to stretch your legs for a while, Eucla is a terrific stop in which to do so.

Kalgoorlie is one of Australia’s most famous tourist destinations. Even though it’s only a 2-hour drive from Norseman, you should stop here for a day or two during your drive from Melbourne to Perth.

Known for its rich gold mining history and vast landscapes, Kalgoorlie offers a range of activities that will engage the whole family.

Arguably its most compelling attraction is the Super Pit. In this open-pit gold mine, you can take a guided tour to learn about the mining process and the Super Pit’s history and get an up-close look at the massive machinery used in mining operations. More Tips for Road Tripping Melbourne to Perth

As exciting a prospect as driving across the Nullarbor is, it can also be quite a challenge. Here are some tips to make it as pleasurable an experience as possible.

• The Nullarbor Plain is a vast and remote region, so planning your journey is crucial. Decide whether you’ll be driving the Eyre Highway or taking an alternative route, and make a note of fuel stations, accommodations and food options along the way.
• Petrol stations can sometimes be hundreds of kilometres apart on the drive through the Nullarbor. So make sure you fill up with fuel or recharge your EV whenever you can – even if you still have more than 50% capacity left.
• If you are driving a petrol vehicle, consider taking some fuel with you, not just for yourself but anyone you see who might have run out along the way.
• Before attempting the crossing, ensure you stock up on supplies like food, water, and any necessary medications, as there may be limited options for purchasing these items along the route. It is worth taking at least 3-4 days’ worth of supplies with you – as a minimum.
• The Nullarbor can be a long and monotonous drive, so staying focused and alert is essential. Avoid fatigue by taking regular breaks and switching drivers often to keep yourself fresh.
• To break up the boredom of the long drive, consider creating a music or podcast playlist you can access offline through apps like Spotify Premium. Doing this will keep you entertained along the way. If you have kids, consider downloading movies onto an iPad and bring lots of toys, games, books and crafts for them.

What is the Distance Between Melbourne and the Gold Coast?

A distance of about 1700 km separates Melbourne and the Gold Coast. If you were to go via the most direct route (M31), it would take approximately 17 hours of non-stop driving to travel between the two destinations.

However, should you decide to go the coastal route along the M1, the drive from Melbourne to the Gold Coast would take about 20 hours direct and cover a distance of around 1850 km.

For those who would like to explore the back roads of Victoria and New South Wales, the inland route provides a fascinating insight into country life. This route incorporates about 2000 km of roads and should take 22 hours of non-stop driving for you to complete.

How Long Do I Need to Allow Driving From Melbourne to Gold Coast?

At a minimum, you must set aside two days at least for a Victoria to Queensland road trip. However, as most of this time will be taken up with you driving, adding an extra day to the journey time would be prudent.

Whether you go via the coastal M1 route, the M31 route via Canberra, or the inland route through country Victoria and New South Wales, you should ideally schedule at least a week to make the most of your journey.

Best Time of Year to Drive from Melbourne to Gold Coast

Regardless of your chosen course – M1, M31, or A39 inland route – a road trip from Melbourne to Queensland is one you can complete all year round.

However, summer is an excellent time if you plan to go the coastal route and stop off at a few beaches. During this period, from December to February, the weather and water should be at their warmest. But you can expect heavier traffic, busier crowds, and more expensive hotel accommodations.

If you prefer to avoid crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons of spring (September to November) or autumn (March to May). During these times, the weather is still enjoyable, and you’ll have a better chance of securing affordable accommodations and experiencing a more relaxed atmosphere.

In the winter, from June to August, you will be subjected to colder temperatures, especially at night in some parts of Victoria, New South Wales, and Canberra. However, accommodation is at its cheapest at this time, and there is usually a lot more availability.

Best Stops on a Melbourne to Gold Coast Trip

As mentioned, there are several routes you can take on a Melbourne to Gold Cost drive. 

If you love the feel of the sand on your toes, you’ll definitely want to take the opportunity to swim, surf and sunbathe on a host of incredible beaches along the M1 route. They include Mallcoota, Merimbula, Batemans Bay, Coffs Harbour, Ballina, and Byron Bay, not to forget the likes of Bondi and Coogee in Sydney.

Should you fancy popping into the nation’s capital of Canberra, the M31 route takes you through historic country towns like Wangaratta, Albury/Wodonga, Wagga Wagga, and Goulburn, where you can meet friendly locals and see several outstanding areas of natural beauty and cultural significance.

Jerilderie (Few Hours)

Jerilderie is a small country town in New South Wales, famous for where Ned Kelly and his gang robbed a bank on 10 February 1879 and locked the police in their own jail cells.

It is one of the main destinations on the Ned Kelly Raid Trail, a self-guided tour featuring the 16 sites he and his gang visited during a crime spree. You can still see the building they held up today and a few other related points of interest at the Jerilderie Museum.

Elsewhere, nature enthusiasts can explore the nearby Jerilderie Common, a beautiful parkland with walking trails, picnic areas, and ample space for kids to run and play. You will also find good fishing at Billabong Creek and Lake Jerilderie, while the Jerilderie Skate Park is perfect for kids who love skateboarding, rollerblading, or scooter riding. Narrandera  (1 Night)

An hour further up from Jerilderie is the charming town of Narrandera.

It’s worth coming here alone for the Narrandera Koala Reserve, which enables you to see these adorable creatures in their natural habitat. You can stroll along the boardwalks and spot koalas resting among the eucalyptus trees. 

For a fun and educational experience, head to the Tiger Moth Memorial, where you can learn about the town’s aviation history and even take a joy flight in a vintage aircraft. Families can also enjoy a picnic and aquatic activities like kayaking and boating at picturesque Lake Talbot or explore the surrounding parklands with playgrounds and walking trails.

Forbes (Few Hours)

If you didn’t get to go to the one at Dubbo, consider visiting the Sliding Springs Observatory at Coonabarabran. It is home to the largest optical telescope in Australia and provides incredible, crystal-clear views of the stars at night.

Coonabarabran is also an excellent base for visiting Warrumbungle National Park, known for its breathtaking landscapes and hiking trails, suitable for all ages. Families can embark on gentle walks and picnics whilst marvelling at the scenery. 

With its extensive collection of minerals and fossils, the Crystal Kingdom is also a must-visit destination. Kids can participate in gemstone fossicking and take home their discoveries.

You should also try to go to The Coonabarabran Visitor Information Centre, which offers interactive displays and information about the region’s natural and cultural heritage. Likewise, the spectacular Pilliga Nature Reserve is somewhere you should also pay a visit to. 

Moree (1 Night)

Moree, in New South Wales, is another destination sure to keep everyone entertained.

The primary reason to come here is the Moree Artesian Aquatic Centre, known for its natural hot springs. Families can relax and rejuvenate in the thermal pools with water slides and play areas for kids.

For a unique experience, a visit to the Moree Plains Gallery is a must. This art gallery showcases local and regional artworks, allowing children to appreciate and explore their creative side. Another destination you should go to for a relaxing afternoon is Jellicoe Park, a beautiful parkland with playgrounds, picnic areas, walking paths, and plenty of green space for ball sports and running around.

Goondiwindi (Half day)

Murray Bridge

Although Murray Bridge is only an hour’s drive from Adelaide, it is worth stopping overnight as it provides some of the best opportunities for stargazing in the country.

Blessed with a stunning natural landscape, the Murray Bridge Riverside Caravan Park is one of the best spots for stargazing in the area. It has a terrific platform within its serene, open-air setting to enjoy a stargazing adventure.

The kids will no doubt be wowed by the night sky’s clarity, enabling them to see various stars and constellations. For those living in urban areas with more light pollution, it is an exhilarating experience. Visitors can also attend the Murray Bridge Astronomical Society’s public stargazing events, where experienced astronomers provide a guided night sky tour through telescopes and binoculars.

During the day, take the kids to the Murray Bridge Swimming Centre. It has a 50-metre pool as well as shaded children’s pools. Monarto Safari Park is also worth visiting. The largest safari park outside of Africa, it has lions, giraffes, cheetahs, black rhinoceros and the Tasmanian Devils to see!

Grampians National Park

Crossing over into Victoria, The Grampians National Park is a fabulous place to visit for active families with children.

For those into hiking, rock climbing, and wildlife watching, there are plenty of opportunities to partake in these activities – in fact, we’d allow a few days if you can!

Children will be fascinated by the ancient rock formations within the park and keen to learn more about its rich Aboriginal history. Some of the easier walks to undertake with kids include Venus Baths and The Balconies Lookout.

You can also take scenic drives to see more of the park’s stunning landscape, enjoy picnics, and go camping.

On a warm summer’s day, there are several swimming pools where you can take a dip, some of which are at the foot of waterfalls. You will also see lots of kangaroos bouncing around on the grasslands!

Nearby, the lovely town of Halls Gap has a beautiful adventure playground for kids to enjoy and there are lots of bakeries and cafes to feed your little ones along your journey.

If you’re making it an overnight stop, try Halls Gap Lakeside Tourist Park or The Lodges are superbly located in the centre of town.

Ballarat

Ballarat in Victoria is a historic destination that offers plenty to see and do for those with children.

One of its main attractions is Sovereign Hill, which offers visitors the chance to step back in time to the 1850s and experience life as a gold miner.

Kids can watch blacksmithing, candle making, and traditional cooking demonstrations, providing a fascinating living history lesson. They can also pan for gold and keep anything they find!

Another big draw is the Ballarat Wildlife Park, where you can see many native Australian animals, including kangaroos, koalas, and emus. Kids can even feed and pat some of the animals.

2. Dimboola Detour – Adelaide to Melbourne Drive via Bendigo

If you take the detour at Dimboola and then eventually get to Melbourne via the A79 / M79. Taking this route, you will visit historic Bendigo.

Bendigo

Bendigo is renowned for being a terrific destination for a family holiday. One of the main things to do there is visit the Central Deborah Gold Mine, where you can take an underground mine tour and learn about the history of gold mining in the area.

Another terrific activity is riding on the Bendigo Tramways, which involves journeying on a vintage tram through the city streets.

Your kids should also love exploring the Bendigo Botanic Gardens, which has a children’s playground and a scenic lily-covered lake. 

Picturesque Lake Weeroona is also a lovely spot for a day out in nature. You can enjoy a picnic, paddleboat ride, swim or play ball sports in its grassy areas. In fact, Bendigo is a treasure trove of kids playgrounds!

For those wanting a spot of culture, the Bendigo Art Gallery presents several exhibitions throughout the year.

Make a stop here overnight before continuing the last leg of your journey through the Macedon Ranges. A great spot to stop is at the Woodend Bakery – a must! – before you reach Melbourne.

3. Princes Highway/Great Ocean Road – Adelaide to Melbourne

Although the coastal route takes a little longer, the fact you get to drive Victoria’s iconic Great Ocean Road is the huge drawcard of making this detour.

Mount Gambier

Just before you reach the border of Victoria, you will come to Mount Gambier. It is worth stopping at this picturesque city as it offers plenty for families with kids.

One of its main drawcards is its stunning natural wonders, which include the Blue Lake and the Umpherston Sinkhole.

The Blue Lake is especially impressive during the summer when the water turns a bright turquoise colour – hence its name. At this time, you can swim, sunbathe and picnic here, and there is plenty of space for little ones to run around safely.

Kids should also enjoy exploring the limestone caves at the Tantanoola Caves Conservation Park and the Engelbrecht Cave. The Mount Gambier Railway Lands is another excellent family-friendly destination, boasting playgrounds, picnic areas, and walking trails.

After the best part of five hours of driving, head to the Mount Gambier Marketplace and Main Corner Complex, which offer several shops and entertainment options for the whole family.

Drive the Great Ocean Road

Twelve Apostles Marine National Park

Your next stop must be at the Twelve Apostles Marine National Park on the Great Ocean Road.

As its name suggests, it is home to the iconic Twelve Apostles rock formations (of which there are only actually seven left!).

To see these magnificent limestone rock formations, various hiking trails in the park provide fantastic views and prime photography spots of them and the more expansive coastline.

Children can also enjoy spotting unique wildlife species such as echidnas, kangaroos, and bird species. Plenty of fishing, boating, and swimming opportunities exist on its various beaches.

Once you’ve had your fill of taking in the Twelve Apostles, make sure you head to the nearby visitor centre. There you will find fascinating educational exhibits on the park’s history and ecology, making it an ideal spot for kids to learn more about the natural world.

Great Otway National Park

Another great place for families to visit on the coastal route from Adelaide to Melbourne is the Great Otway National Park.

This direct route will take you through the New South Wales Riverina and into its Fruit Bowl. Then, it will lead you through the Big Desert Wilderness before skirting the Spencer Gulf at Port Pirie and up to Port Augusta.

The latter signals the last coastal body of water you’ll see as the route veers inland through the heart of rural South Australia and into the Northern Territory before eventually taking you to Uluru. 

Uluru-kata Tjuta National Park is an incredible destination to visit all year round. However, for various reasons, some parts of the year are better than others.

From October to March, the mercury regularly exceeds 35°C during the day. So if you intend to come at this time, staying safe by drinking plenty of water and avoiding walking after 11 am is essential.

You can undertake a Melbourne to Sydney road trip at any time of year.

However, as it is a bustling route that regularly experiences heavy traffic, you might find the best time to do so will be during the school term. In particular, the autumn months of March to May (outside of Easter) and the spring months of September to November are good options, as traffic on the roads at non-rush hour times and not during the Sydney school holidays should be free-flowing.

During autumn, the weather is mild and comfortable, making it an ideal time to enjoy the outdoor attractions along the way, such as national parks, beaches, and wineries. You can also treat yourself to authentic Australian experiences, such as tasting the nation’s best vanilla slice and even trying your luck at prospecting for gold! 

Overall, the drive through south eastern Australia is a magical, mystical adventure that will give you a fascinating insight into some of the history and culture of this part of the land Down Under. 

Overall, the drive from the Sydney CBD to the Adelaide CBD covers a distance of approximately 1375 km (855 miles). 

The most direct way to drive to Adelaide from Sydney is via the Sturt Highway and Mallee Highway, which will take about 15 hours to traverse if you drive non-stop without taking a break. 

If you are short on time, that route is the best option, and you could do it in two days. However, if you have a few days at your disposal, it is worth taking three or four days to complete the journey, as that will give you more time to take in the sights. 

This primary course will lead you from Sydney to Adelaide via the NSW part of The Riverina, and areas are known as the Fruit Bowl and the Big Desert Wilderness. 

If you take this drive to Adelaide, you’ll be treated to beautiful views of the rolling landscape and a flavor of the rich aboriginal heritage of the area. You can also stop at remote, small towns like Manangatang and Keri Keri that showcase the ‘real’ Australia. 

As well as this primary course, you can take a couple of scenic routes on a road trip from Sydney to Adelaide. They include via the NSW portion of the Riverina or through country Victoria, which allows you to see another state in Australia. 

How Long Is the Drive From Sydney to Adelaide? 

The driving time from Sydney to Adelaide depends on you, particularly what route you take, what you want to see, and how much time you have available. 

As mentioned, the direct route will take you about 15 hours to drive non-stop, which is a tough ask for anyone, especially if you are traveling with kids. Therefore, you should factor in two days as a minimum.

However, as it is a long journey with several points of interest, we recommend you schedule at least 5 to 7 days.  

Along the way, you will encounter diverse landscapes, several stunning geological wonders, and plenty of quaint towns. So, this length of time will enable you to see quite a few sites and spend some quality time at one or two of them per day. 

There is no best time of year to drive from Sydney to Adelaide, only more preferred times, as this journey is lovely to undertake all year round.

However, many travellers opt to make this road trip in the Australian autumn and spring seasons, which fall between March and May and September and November, respectively. During these times, the weather is generally mild, with comfortable temperatures and lower chances of rainfall.

The spring season is particularly popular for road tripping in south-east Australia because this is when many of the region’s wildflowers and flora bloom, creating a stunning and colourful landscape.

It can be hot and dry during the summer months (December to February), with temperatures reaching over 40°C (104°F) in some areas. So, this can make driving uncomfortable unless you have a good air-conditioning system, and there is also an increased risk of bushfires.

During the winter (June to August), the weather is noticeably cooler. But this often leads to starker landscapes and clearer skies, heightening your experiences. You are highly unlikely to find winter road closures on this route.

Bendigo (1 night)

Bendigo is a four-and-a-half-hour drive from Wagga Wagga, so it is a fabulous place to stop overnight or for a couple of hours.

We recommend overnight because there are excellent hotels, restaurants, shops, and services here. This historical city in the central Victorian goldfields also boasts stunning architecture, a rich cultural heritage, and a thriving arts scene worth exploring.

Art lovers will also enjoy the Bendigo Art Gallery, which houses a vast Australian and international artwork collection. Likewise, those wanting to strike it rich can explore the historic Central Deborah Gold Mine, which offers guided tours and a chance to experience life as a gold miner in the 19th century. You can even pan for gold and can keep anything you find!

Ouyen (Half Day)
