Winters, though, bring in cooler temperatures ranging from the mid-60s to the low 70s. Combine that with sunny skies and you’ve got yourself a perfect winter escape in one of the most unique landscapes of California, and the USA!

Arches National Park

Location: Utah

A fiery desert landscape may not be the first thing that pops to mind when you picture a winter trip, but the colder months just happen to be one of the best times of the year to pay Arches National Park a visit.

As its name may have clued you in, this beautiful national park in Utah is home to tons of natural archways (over two thousand of them!). Moreover, the park also boasts expansive mesas, otherworldly-looking rock formations that look as though they pierce the sky, and a vibrant red landscape that will make you feel as though you’re walking on Mars.

While temperatures do get chilly during the winter, it doesn’t really get cold enough to ruin the day. Moreover, Arches isn’t exactly popular during the winter months, making crowds at some of its most frequented spots almost non-existent (during summer, the crowds are so heavy a timed entry permit system has been introduced.

Biscayne National Park

Location: Florida

If you’d rather avoid the cold altogether and are on the lookout for a tropical escape, look no further than Biscayne National Park in Florida.

Set south of Miami, this park is so different from the rest because 95% of it is set under the water. This means you’ll definitely need to get wet in order to get to see everything, which you can do via a snorkeling or scuba diving adventure, depending on your preference.

Another way to explore for those who prefer not to swim is by booking a glass-bottom boat tour. This may not give you the chance to get super close to the marine life that calls Biscayne its home, but it’s guaranteed to provide some seriously epic encounters nonetheless.

Once you’ve explored the ocean, make sure you also check out the remaining 5% of the park, which is set on small islands and islets you can hike (or relax) on while stumbling across unique wildlife and views so good you’ll have to pinch yourself to believe they’re real!

Bryce Canyon National Park

The contrast of the snow against the coastal views of the Atlantic creates a truly stunning background perfect for all sorts of winter fun. While scenic drives can be off the cards during winter, with the Park Loop Road usually closing from December 1 through until spring, winter hiking is a common activity, but make sure you bring the right gear.

Winter sports are another winter highlight in Acadia, with 45 miles of carriage roads for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing available. Snowmobiling is another top activity in Acadia, especially for those keen to experience the park’s scenic road from a totally different angle.

Moreover, birding in Acadia during the winter is top-notch, when leafless trees open up the forest for easy viewing. Some species you may see include snowy owls, black-capped chickadees, and Harlequin ducks.

Grand Canyon National Park

Saguaro National Park

Location: Arizona

Located less than an hour from Tucson, Arizona, Saguaro National Park still remains a bit of a hidden gem in the national parks system and a perfect go-to during the colder months!

This arid wonderland sits right in the heart of the Sonoran Desert, and its allure comes from the fact that it is home to the country’s largest cacti and saguaros, some of which can grow up to 60 feet tall!

During your visit, you can explore the park on foot by going on a hike (the Desert Discovery Nature Trail is a great way to learn about the flora in the area), taking a scenic drive amidst saguaros (the 8-mile Cactus Forest Loop Drive is a must!), or searching for ancient petroglyphs.

While snowstorms are not that common, they happen, so you may get lucky and see a scene of cacti coated in white snow! It’s certainly one of the more unique places to visit in Arizona.

Denali National Park

Location: Alaska

Alaska in winter?! If you don’t mind freezing temperatures, Denali National Park is a true treat during the winter months, even if snowfall actually starts as early as August!

Days are short in Denali during the winter, but that brings in opportunities to get glimpses of the northern lights, all while getting the landscape during the day pretty much all to yourself.

Moreover, if you happen to be visiting in February, you’ll be in for a real treat at the park’s annual Winterfest, where you’ll get to catch snow block sculpting competitions, guided walks, dog-sledding adventures, and so much more!

Note that once snow falls, the roads may frequently close at Mile 3, Park Headquarters. From late February/March ploughing begins and travelers may be able to make it as far as Mile 13, Mountain Vista Rest Area but it is weather dependent.

Note that due to their remote nature, most national parks in Alaska are completely in accessible in winter. Denali is an exception due to its geographic location.

Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park

If you’d much rather see sunshine than snow, a visit to Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park is guaranteed to please.

Popular with snowbirds, this national park’s high season takes place during the winter, so if you don’t mind the crowds, it makes for a perfect destination to escape the cold.

1. North Pole, Alaska 

Yup, there’s a town called North Pole, and when it comes to quintessential places to celebrate Christmas in, it definitely takes the cake! 

Located in Alaska just a short drive away from the city of Fairbanks, North Pole is said to be the place where “the spirit of Christmas lives year-round.” As you stroll through its downtown, you’ll be treated to a world of streets decorated in gigantic candy canes, colorful twinkling lights, and just about every Christmas motif you can think of! Many people travel to Alaska in hopes of getting glimpses of the fantastic species that reside here. Seeing Stellar Sea Lions, black and grizzly bears, orcas, bald eagles, and humpback whales is surely an experience like no other!

If you’re headed to Alaska and wondering where to go for the best chances of seeing wildlife up close, here’s the ultimate list of the best destinations in the Frontier State every animal lover needs to place on their bucket list.

The Best Places to See Wildlife in Alaska

1. Kenai Fjords National Park

Massive glaciers are the main attraction of Kenai Fjords, but if your main aim is to see wildlife, you’ll find plenty of that too!

Kenai Fjords is one of the best places in Alaska to spot whales, especially orcas and humpback whales. Plenty of cruises are available that take visitors to the best areas in the park to spot them!

Moreover, as you explore the park, you may also get to see other animals like puffins, sea otters, bald eagles, and more. Grizzly bears and moose often hang out around Exit Glacier, so head there in hopes of getting lucky!

2. Katmai National Park & Reserve

Originally created as a way to protect the area of Novarupta and the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes after a devastating volcano eruption destroyed it, Katmai was also designated as a place to protect brown bears and salmon.

Giant moose and foxes also roam the area, but the main reason visitors to Alaska head here is to see brown bears fishing for salmon at Brook Rivers during the summer months. Mother bears and cubs are also a highlight of Katmai National Park!

Katmai can only be reached by sea or air. Camping amenities and cabins are available within the park.

3. Chugach State Park

Located just outside of Anchorage, Chugach State Park makes for an easy day trip filled with wildlife sightings.

Here, you’ll find over 45 species of mammals, including almost all of the land species that reside in Alaska! Brown bears and moose are so abundant here that finding them roaming around in Anchorage isn’t exactly a rare sight.

Brown bears, Dall sheep, wolves, black bears, and moose all reside within Chugach. Sightings of smaller animals like foxes, beavers, and river otters are also common.

Chugach is a favorite destination for Anchorage locals. There are plenty of rivers, lakes, and campgrounds available for recreational activities like fishing, hiking, boating, biking, and kayaking. During the winter months, Chugach is also a prime destination for cross-country skiing and Northern Lights sightings.

4. Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center

Tucked away in the alluring Chugach Mountain Range in the Portage Valley, the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center is a sanctuary for orphaned and injured animals.

While many animals are released back into the wild, many arrive in terrible conditions and remain inside the sanctuary for the rest of their lives.

The center is open for daily visitors and provides a great opportunity not only to see plenty of animals but also to observe them from a close distance and learn all about them. There are many things to do inside the center, including walking, biking, and scenic driving. Guided tours are also available for those keen to get to know the animals and their stories a little better.

6. Denali National Park

Encompassing a whopping six million acres of pure wilderness, Denali National Park is where you can see plenty of landscapes and ecosystems, ranging from verdant forests to alpine tundra and snowy mountains.

The centerpiece of Denali is a 20,300-foot volcano of the same name. This is the highest mountain in the entire United States!

Wild animals love roaming freely all over the park. Whether you opt to brave the hike to the summit of Denali or go for less-challenging trails, your chances of spotting animals like wolves, caribou deer, grizzly bears, moose, and more are very likely!

7. Chena River State Recreation Area

Home to almost 400 square miles of rivers, forests, and tundra, Chena River is a beautiful destination that can be visited year-round.

Hiking, rock climbing, and scenic driving along the river on Hot Springs Road are all favorite activities to do at Chena River State Recreation Area. As you explore the area, your chances of spotting black and brown bears as well as moose and beavers are very high, especially in the forested areas in the park.

8. Glacier Bay National Park

Home to glaciers galore, another thing that makes Glacier Bay National Park a truly special destination is that it provides very high chances of spotting wildlife.

Humpback whales, sea lions, sea otters, wolves, blacktail deer, moose wolves, mountain goats, bald eagles, and seals are all present here. As if that wasn’t enough, plenty of bears call Glacier Bay their home, including brown and black bears as well as blue glacier bears, an unusual variation of black bears.

Unfortunately, Glacier Bay cannot be reached by land. It is a very popular cruise stop on most Alaska routes, but if you wish to stay here longer, you need to arrive by boat or plane. There are several accommodation options for overnight visitors.

Thanks to its ideal location, Alaska’s most populated city offers plenty of options when it comes to incredible day trips. Be it a small town filled with heritage to some of the best state and national parks in the Frontier State, options abound for places you can easily explore in just a day.

1. Spencer Glacier 

Spencer Glacier is one of the most striking glaciers in Alaska. Set inside the alluring Chugach National Forest, this colossal glacier rises from a lake dotted by icebergs, creating a landscape that looks out of this world. 

Aside from getting to see the glacier itself, the way there is also an absolute treat. The only way to reach Spencer Glacier is by hopping on the Glacier Discovery Train, a short but incredibly exciting ride that provides some insanely scenic views of Alaska.  

2. Talkeetna 

Set on the way from Anchorage to Denali National Park, Talkeetna is a charming little town that provides visitors the unique opportunity to blend in a day filled with culture and Alaskan nature. 

Here, you’ll find a quaint downtown area dotted with historical buildings, charming coffee shops, plenty of cozy restaurants, breweries local art galleries, and old-school saloons. During your visit, make sure not to miss out on touring the Denali Brewing Company, where you’ll get to taste and learn all about Alaska’s favorite craft beer. 

Something else that makes Talkeetna wonderful is that thanks to its location close to Denali National Park, its gorgeous downtown is towered by Denali, the highest mountain in the United States! 

Another favorite activity for visitors is joining a Talkeetna Sled Dog Kennel Tour, where you’ll get to meet the dog athletes that partake in dog mushing races, a sport unique to the Frontier State. 

3. Kenai Fjords National Park 

Set just over a hundred miles away from Anchorage, Kenai Fjords National Park is one of Alaska’s most iconic places and a pretty easy day trip from Anchorage. 

Kenai Fjords is an incredible glacial park that encompasses over 600,000 acres of icy landscapes. Aside from gawking at the glaciers in the park, Kenai Fjords is also a wonderful place to spot Alaskan wildlife, including whales, orcas, seals, puffins, and more. 

A few of the best things to do at Kenai Fjords include hiking the Exit Glacier Trail to Glacier Overlook for the best views, kayaking or boating around the glacier, and taking a cruise around the area to observe marine life from a close distance. 

4. Girdwood 

If high-end dining and skiing are your jam, Girdwood is one of the best day trips from Anchorage. 

Girdwood is home to a popular ski resort, making it a go-to for skiing during the winter months. If you’re visiting Alaska during the summer, though, you’ll also find plenty on the menu. Some of the best things to do in Girdwood aside from skiing include riding the town’s tram for gorgeous views of the valley, hiking in the forest, and touring the Crow Creek Mine’s historical buildings (you can also go on a scavenger hunt for leftover gold!) 

5. Lake Clark National Park and Preserve 

If you want to visit a place that is lesser known to tourists, Lake Clark National Park and Preserve is a great option. 

This rather unknown national park sees less than 20,000 visitors every year, making it a perfect destination to enjoy the Alaskan wilderness in solitude. Here, you’ll find a gorgeous lake enveloped by mountains, glaciers, rivers, waterfalls, coastal views, and even two active volcanoes. 

There’s plenty to do at Lake Clark, but if you only have a day, we recommend focusing your efforts on spotting brown bears. There are over 200 of them residing inside the park as well as other creatures, including caribou, moose, Dall sheep, black bears, Beluga whales, harbor seals, sea otters, wolves, and Stellar Sea Lions. Go on a hike or rent a kayak and see how many of these species you can spot during your day trip to this hidden gem! 

6. Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center 

If getting close and personal with wildlife is on your Alaska bucket list, a day trip from Anchorage to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center is a must on your itinerary. 

Located in the Portage Valley, this humongous conservation center was opened with the aim of rehabilitating orphaned and injured animals. Here, you’ll be able to see plenty of species, be it on a walk, on a scenic drive, or on a bike. Guided tours around the sanctuary are also available for those who want to get more personal with the animals, learn their stories, and even get to care for a few of them! 

As if the chance of seeing animals like reindeer, gray wolves, moose, bears, and muskox wasn’t enough, the conservation center is also surrounded by the alluring Chugach Mountains and the Turnagain Arm Inlet, making the entire way here an absolute visual treat. 

7. Eklutna Lake 

Eklutna is a lake that was formed when a massive glacier retreated and streams from the mountains filled the valley with water. 

Set only 26 miles away from Anchorage, a visit to this gorgeous lake makes for a very easy day trip from the city. If you visit during the summer, you’ll be able to make the most out of the lake, with activities like canoeing, fishing, and kayaking being favorites. 

Come winter, Eklutna Lake becomes a mecca for cross-country skiing, fat-tire biking, and even Aurora Borealis viewing. Hiking is also a popular year-round activity. 

8. Moose Pass 

Set only two hours away, Moose Pass is another of the best day trips from Anchorage for those looking to experience glorious Alaskan nature. 

Located in a sub-polar setting, Moose Pass is a haven for gorgeous scenery, with hiking trails available that will have you stumbling across mountain views, crystal-clear lakes, spruce tree forests, and berry patches. 

​​9. Matanuska Glacier 

Located along the National Scenic Glenn Highway, the Matanuska Glacier is a colossal glacier that is a whopping 27 miles and 4 miles wide, making it the largest glacier that is accessible by car in the country. 

Simply gawking at this glacier is an experience unlike any other, but this day trip has even more to offer in case you want to linger a while longer. Within the state park, you’ll also get the chance to try your hand at river rafting and ziplining if you’re feeling adventurous, but if you want more mellow activities, you can also choose from a variety of activities like berry picking, hiking, and wildlife spotting during the summer months. 

10. Chugach National Forest 

Boasting over 6 million acres of untouched nature (that’s bigger than New Hampshire!), Chugach National Forest is a wonderland of quintessential Alaskan scenery than can be visited on a day trip from Anchorage. 

Due to its massive size, most people opt to spend a few days within the park, but it can very well be treated as a day trip if you’re willing to endure an early wake-up call. Chugach is home to a range of landscapes that include rain forests, boreal woods, humongous wetlands, and coastal inlets. Moreover, you’ll find over 20 tidewater glaciers here! 

One of the best things to do in order to cover as much ground as possible is driving the Copper River Highway, which will take you through a variety of terrains within the park. Other activities visitors love include hiking and biking, taking the Glacier Discovery Train to Spencer Glacier, viewing wildlife, paddling over tributaries, and checking out a few glaciers. 

11. Portage Valley 

Set an hour’s drive southeast of Anchorage, Portage Valley is a wonderful day trip to take if what you’re after is a day spent enjoying the outdoors. 

Most people visit Portage Valley to complete the Trail of Blue Ice, a 5-mile biking and hiking route connecting most of the developed stops along the road and providing spectacular vistas. This is a pretty flat route, so it can easily be completed in a day without much effort! 

Aside from hiking and biking, another favorite thing to do at Portage Valley is paddling around a few of the lakes in the area. Trout fishing is spectacular here as well! 

12. Crow Creek Gold Mine 

If a little history sounds like your jam, make sure to add Crow Creek Gold Mine to your list of day trips from Anchorage to take. 

Established in the late 19th century, this mine provides a window to the past into the Gold Rush of Alaska. During your visit, you’ll be able to admire historical buildings, see a wide array of antiques, admire the oldest building in the Anchorage municipality, and go on a guided and extremely immersive tour in order to learn about gold in Alaska. If you’re feeling up for the challenge, you can even join in and try your hand at finding gold! 

13. Denali National Park 

Denali National Park is one of Alaska’s most visited parks thanks to the fact that it can be accessed by road, unlike most of the rest. 

Home to the tallest mountain in the United States, Denali boasts a whopping 6 million acres of the Alaskan wilderness, which encompasses different ecosystems such as taiga, tundra, and glaciers. 

For the ultimate adventure and to cover as much of the park as possible in a short time, a flightseeing tour is a great option. Along the ride, you’ll be able to truly get a perspective of how vast Denali is, all while getting to spot wildlife and see mountains from above. Another option is traveling by helicopter, which allows you the unique chance to land on a glacier! 

If you’re not too keen on flying, you can also opt to drive the park’s 92-mile scenic road. This scenic drive will give you the chance to stop and plenty of viewpoints as well as several trailheads in case you want to explore further afield on foot! 

14. Prince William Sound 

Tucked away inside the Chugach National Forest, Prince William Sound boasts over 3,000 miles of beautiful coastline, making it a humongous protected marine area. 

Here, you’ll be able to witness marine life in Alaska in its full splendor, with Stellar sea lions, humpback whales, harbor seals, and sea otters being just a few of the species you may be able to spot on a marine expedition. 

Aside from that, many more animals are on the ground, including Black and Brown bears, eagles, moose, and plenty more. Aside from seeing wildlife galore, other incredible things to do in the region include hiking across several trails, going jet skiing amid glaciers, seeing waterfalls, and so much more. 

Prince William Sound is so vast that it can be accessed from different sides. Since this is a day trip, the easiest way to do so is by entering through the town of Whittier, which is located 60 miles from Anchorage. 

15. Homer 

This quaint town is located a 4-hour drive away from Anchorage, but if you start the day early enough, Homer can very well be done as a day trip. 

The drive itself is part of the adventure, especially as you start getting close to Homer, with a few of the views of the repertoire being the Kenai Mountains, plenty of volcanic crests, and Kachemak Bay. 

On a day trip, the best things to do include strolling around Homer’s adorable streets to take in that small-town Alaska charm, hopping on a helicopter tour to enjoy the scenery around, or going fishing (Homer is known as the Halibut Fishing Capital of the World!)

Visit the Actual Capital of Alaska, Juneau

Juneau is the capital of Alaska and the most popular port in the state (nope, it’s not Anchorage, as most people think!).

Despite being one of the most important cities in the Frontier State, there are no roads leading to it, and the only way to reach it is by ship or plane!

Most people skip Juneau and opt to visit Anchorage instead, but if time allows, we highly recommend including this unique town in your itinerary.

Juneau is located between Mount Rovers, Mount Juneau, and the Gastineau Channel, making the backdropping landscape a treat to look at. To top it off, the city is dotted with gorgeous historical buildings from the 1900s, making the entire scenery feel like it belongs in a painting.

Some of the top attractions to check out during your visit include the Mendenhall Glacier nearby, the Marine Hall, the State Capitol buildings, Saint Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church, and historic South Franklin Street for great food, historical buildings, and shops.

Adventure at Denali National Park

Home to the tallest mountain in the United States at an elevation of over 20,000 feet and some of the most striking sights Alaska has to offer, Denali National Park is a must on everyone’s nature lover’s bucket list.

The park covers an area of over 6 million acres, giving visitors plenty of choices when it comes to deciding what to see and do. Hiking, fishing, rafting, and biking are favorite activities here, especially when you consider you’ll get access to tons of wildlife sighting opportunities.

Learn about Alaskan History at Hatcher Pass

Mining played a huge role in Alaskan history. During the gold and copper rushes, many people moved out from the continental United States into the Frontier State and made it their permanent home.

A visit to Hatcher Pass will give you the opportunity to learn about Alaska’s mining activities and their importance to the state. Visit the Mine State Historical Park to see mining buildings and equipment or ride the 22-mile trail to see old mining buildings in the mountains!

Witness the Goose Creek Tower

If you’re into a little quirkiness here and there, check out the Goose Creek Tower between Talkeetna and Willow is an absolute must.

This incredibly unique house is often dubbed the “Dr. Seuss House” because it looks straight out of the author’s imagination! These days, the house stands tall at 185 feet, with a main house at the bottom and several other smaller houses built on top of each other.

The best part? The owner, an attorney from Anchorage, claims the house isn’t even finished yet!

Experience True Wilderness at Gates of the Arctic National Park & Preserve

If you’re up for an adventure like no other and have enough skills to brave the wilderness, visiting Gates of the Arctic is one of the most remote adventures you can have in Alaska and even the entire world.

Due to its remoteness, accessing this park is not easy, with an air taxi being the only option to get there aside from canoeing, rafting down the river, or hiking. Because of this, Gates of the Arctic is very rarely visited (less than 10,000 people enter the park every year), which means you’re more likely to spot Grizzly bears than people here!

Keep in mind that there are no roads or any kind of amenities in the park. Visiting here requires knowing how to live off the land and having plenty of survival skills, but if you want to experience the Alaska you’ve seen on National Geographic – this is where that will happen!

Take a Flightseeing Tour

Even though Alaska is gorgeous from the ground, there’s no better way to fully take in the magnitude of its landscapes than by flying above them.

Flight tours are available from pretty much any major destination in Alaska, but the most popular ones for unraveled vistas are those that soar over Denali (the highest mountain in the United States) and the ice fields at Kenai Fjords National Park.

Walk Over the Sand Dunes of Kobuk Valley

Even though sand dunes are probably the last thing you’d expect to see in the Arctic Circle, Kobuk Valley is proof the Frontier State is full of incredible surprises!

The Great Kobuk Sand dunes are the largest active sand dunes in the Arctic, rising for 30 miles along the banks of the Kobuk River. They create scenery that will make you forget you’re in Alaska at all if it weren’t for the cold temperatures and the footprints of bears and other northern animals appearing on the sand.

If you’re wondering how this is even a thing, the sand dunes at Kobuk Valley were formed when glaciers receded during the Ice Age, and chunks of ice churned over rocks and ground them into fine sand.

Much like the Gates to the Arctic, accessing Kobuk Valley is challenging due to its incredibly remote location. Still, if you’re able to make it, we guarantee this will be an experience like no other!

Go Hiking at Kenai Fjords National Park

Located on the Kenai Peninsula only 126 miles south of Anchorage, Kenai Fjords is the most accessible of Alaska national parks and one of the best spots to visit to experience picture-perfect landscapes.

During your time here, you’ll get to see humongous glaciers, hop on a boat or kayak to explore the ocean, and get plenty of opportunities to spot native wildlife like whales, sea lions, otters, puffins, and more.

Most of Kenai Fjords is made up of ice and water, so many of the activities here are water-based. If you want to explore on land as well, you can hike the Exit Glacier Trail, a 2.2-mile hike that will have you walking in the forest and into an overlook for jaw-dropping vistas of the glaciers below.

If you’re up for an adventure, another amazing hike is the Harding Ice Field Trail, which is 8.2 miles long and provides views of ice fields and over 40 glaciers in the park.

Explore an Actual Ghost Town

Back in the early 1900s, the town of Kennicott became a bustling place when people flocked to settle there after hearing about the opening of copper mines in the area.

Over time, copper began to dwindle, and this town’s residents inside the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve moved to other places in search of more opportunities.

These days, Kennicott still preserves its buildings from its golden era, and the only people that actually step foot there are curious visitors looking to take a peek back in time. Despite efforts to turn it into a tourist attraction, still very few people actually go here, making the experience a pretty unique (and yet somehow eerie) one!

Get Your Cool on at the Aurora Ice Museum

Located inside the Chena Hot Springs Resort in Fairbanks, the Aurora Ice Museum is a museum entirely carved out of snow and ice that provides a truly dazzling (and literally “cool”) experience.

Aside from marveling at this museum’s architectural wonder, you’ll also be able to enjoy displays of incredible ice sculptures, see reenactments of aurora borealis, and  enjoy fantasy ice scenes.

Cruise Around Prince William Sound

Encompassing over 3,000 miles of coastline in the Gulf of Alaska, Prince William Sound is the perfect place to explore if spotting marine life and gawking at fjords and glaciers is on your Alaska bucket list.

While it’s possible to visit any of the towns along Prince William Sound and explore the area from there, the ultimate way to fully get to see it in its full splendor is by booking a cruise to take you further into the inlet.

Here, you’ll see spectacular views of the mountains and the bay and get spoiled with choice when it comes to food and shopping options.

Animal sightings are common here, so you may even get to spot a few sea otters and even whales during June and July!

Another highlight of Sewards is the Alaska Sealife Center, where you can meet rescued animals like harbor seals, puffins, and sea lions while they recover. A definite add to your Alaska bucket list.

6. Valdez

Set in Prince William Sound, Valdez is a place where beautiful glaciers, mountains, forests, wine, and delicious food come together.

Thanks to its perfect blend of the best of all worlds, a visit to Valdez will have you exploring inside ice caves, climbing a few glaciers, and hiking in the mountains during the mornings while doing some serious fine dining and art gallery hopping at dusk.

If you’re feeling adventurous, other ways to explore the park on your own are by kayaking and hiking (there are two trails in the park). For the most impressive views, book a helicopter tour, where you’ll be able to get a birdseye view of glaciers, mountain tops, and ice fields.

Not only is Kenai Fjords easily accessible by road and train, but you can also take a ferry from Seward or even an excursion from a cruise ship!

• Best time to visit: The park is open year-round but is best visited during the summer months of June through August for better weather conditions.
• Closest major airport: Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport
• Stay: Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge – only accessible by boat from the coast, or stay in Seward or Anchorage and access as a day visitor

Denali National Park and Preserve

Home to the highest peak in the United States and six million acres of pure Alaskan wilderness, Denali National Park is a humongous park that offers some of the best the Frontier State has to offer in terms of nature while still remaining accessible.

To cover as much ground as possible, you can drive the park’s 92-mile scenic road (you may only be able to go the first 15 miles in your own vehicle – unless you win the “golden ticket“- an annual road lottery).

Not only will you get to see some of the best scenery at Denali, but you’ll also get access to plenty of hiking trails in case you want to park the car and explore further afield.

Other fun activities include kayaking down wild rivers and wildlife spotting (keep your eyes out for caribou, wolves, moose, and bears!)

If you consider yourself an experienced hiker and feel up for the challenge, you can also hike Denali Mountain. This humongous 20,000 feet tall volcano is the highest in the United States and on every peak collector’s bucket list!

Be aware that getting to the summit is no easy feat as you’ll need to be ready to brave camping in Arctic conditions and hiking over icy terrain.

Most will opt to take a bus tour through the park to get the best possible views. There are both narrated and non-narrated options, ranging in price from around $100 to $240 per adult ($40 – $100 for kids). They last between 4.5 hours and 12 hours – learn more here.

• Best time to visit: Open year-round but best to visit during the summer for activities and bearable weather. Buses to Denali National Park only run between May and September.

Glacier Bay National Park

If you want to see some of the best Alaska has to offer in terms of views and wildlife, a visit to Glacier Bay National Park is guaranteed to please.

Here, you’ll get to immerse yourself in a world of enormous glaciers, glorious snow-capped mountains, and pristine Alaskan wilderness.

A few of the best things to do at Glacier Bay include hiking four of the trails available along the shores and rivers of the park in search of wildlife (Humpback whales, sea lions, sea otters, wolves, blacktail deer, moose wolves, mountain goats, bald eagles, seals, black bears, and rare blue glacier bears are all present here), fishing on Glacier Bay, rafting down the Alsek River, and kayaking on Bartlett Cover.

Since there are no roads connecting Glacier Bay to the rest of Alaska, most visitors to the park arrive on a fantastic cruise journey over a 65-mile waterway filled with glaciers.

If a cruise isn’t your thing, two other ways to reach Glacier Bay National Park are by flying in or taking a ferry to Gustavus, a small town on the edge of the park.

(NB 2021 visitors are significantly down due to the pandemic and lack of cruise ships, it is usually Alaska’s most visited!)

• Best time to visit: Glacier Bay is open all year, but visitor services are only available between May and September.

Wrangell-St. Elias National Park

At 13.2 million acres, Wrangell-St. Elias is the biggest national park in the United States, measuring almost the same as the state of West Virginia! It is, however, the 8th least-visited national park.

Due to its vast size, getting to some of the locations inside the park can be quite challenging, making this one of the best national parks in Alaska to visit for avid adventurers who don’t mind roughing it up.

One of the favorite activities for visitors who want to get a taste of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park is driving down McCarthy Road, a 62-mile dirt road that takes you somewhat deep into the park.

This drive provides wonderful views of the landscapes as well as the chance for plenty of wildlife encounters (you may get to spot bears, eagles, moose, and more).

If you’re up for some serious adventure, you can try your hand at ice climbing the gigantic Root Glacier or go backpacking at Skolai Pass for beautiful views of canyons, waterfalls, and more sights than most visitors don’t get to see!

As a fun fact, Wrangell-St. Elias National Park is often nicknamed “the mountain kingdom of North America”. This name is well deserved, especially considering the park is home to nine of the highest peaks in the United States.

Aside from getting to see sky-high mountains, other sceneries you’ll get to enjoy during your visit include alpine lakes, dense forests, humongous lakes, and tundra, as beautiful as it can get.

There are plenty of campgrounds spread all over the park and several cabins. Staying inside the park is highly recommended, especially if you want to explore as much of it as possible.

• Entry fee: Free
• Best time to visit: You can visit Wrangell-St. Elias National Park any time of the year, but most people visit between September and April to see the northern lights. Summer is also a great time to visit for good weather conditions.
• Closest major airport: Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport
• Stay: Kennicott Glacier Lodge and a few options around McCarthy

Katmai National Park & Reserve

If you want to feel as though you’re inside a scene of Disney’s Brother Bear movie, look no further than Katmai National Park.

Even though getting here isn’t a breeze, Katmai is very well worth your efforts because it homes plenty of brown bears. Sights are common all over, but the ultimate place to see them is at Brook River, where mother bears and cubs are often seen fishing for salmon.

To get there, you can hike a short trail to reach the viewing platforms, but be aware that bears also use this trail to get to the river!

Aside from seeing glorious views of bears catching salmon, other wonderful things to do at Katmai include boating on Naknek Lake, hiking Dumpling Mountain. You can take a helicopter tour over the park or drive to the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes to see the impact a rare volcanic eruption had on the park.

Note that Katmai is not accessible by road and can only be reached by plane.

You will first need to fly to King Salmon Airport and then take a short float plane ride to the park. There are camping amenities and cabins inside Katmai, so you can spend the night.

• Entry fee: Free
• Best time to visit: July is the best month to see the bears fishing for salmon, as they usually start arriving at Brook Falls at the end of June.
• Closest airport: King Salmon Airport (AKN)
• Stay: Brooks Lodge (walking distance to Brooks Falls!)

Lake Clark National Park and Preserve

If you’re looking for a national park in Alaska that is rarely visited but still very accessible, Lake Clark National Park is a wonderful choice.

Located only a hundred miles southwest of Anchorage, this glorious national park receives only about 20,000 visitors every year, making it a wonderful destination to visit to escape the crowds if you don’t necessarily have time to see the north.

During your visit to Lake Clark, you’ll be treated to expansive views of glaciers, mountains, and the ocean. Moreover, you’ll also find lakes, rivers, and even two active volcanoes!

Hiking and kayaking are two of the favorite activities at Lake Clark. As a bonus, this is also a wonderful place to see brown bears, with some 200 of them roaming in the area. Other creatures like Beluga whales, sea otters, wolves, moose, and more can also be easily spotted!

• Entry fee: Free
• Best time to visit: The summer months are ideal for visiting for mild temperatures and accessibility.
• Closest major airport: Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport
• Stay: The Farm Lodge (Port Alsworth)

Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve

If true Alaskan wilderness is what you’re after, Gates of the Arctic is sure to deliver. Be aware that visiting this national park is not for everyone, especially when you consider there aren’t any roads through the park or amenities – you’ll have to live off the land and have some serious navigation and survival skills to make it here!

Because of its remoteness, you’ll barely see any other people at Gates of the Arctic. In fact, you’re way more likely to spot a grizzly bear or a wolf than a person!

Most people access this park by flying on an air taxi from Fairbanks to the town of Bettles. This is the easiest way to access the park, but others also include canoeing or rafting down rivers and hiking.

Keep in mind that if you visit independently, you will need to arrange for an air taxi to drop you into the park and pick you back up again.

There are a few tours available if you really want to visit the Gates of the Arctic without risking things too much. Still, be prepared to rough it up here seriously!​​

Moreover, if you want to visit the Gates of the Arctic but don’t want to backpack or camp in the elements, there is a lodge in Bettles where you can spend the night.

• Entry fee: Free
• Best time to visit: Summer is really the only wise time to visit Gates of the Arctic. This is the only time of the year when the park is somewhat accessible and temperatures are okay for hiking, rafting, and backpacking.
• Closest airport: Bettles Airport
• Stay: Only backcountry camping, or stay in Bettles

Kobuk Valley National Park

Located just above the Arctic Circle, Kobuk Valley is just as remote as the Gates of the Arctic.

Aside from its location in the Arctic, there are two things that make Kobuk an extremely unique national park to visit. For one, it is home to the largest sand dunes in the Arctic, and secondly, it homes humongous herds of caribou!

Besides homing sand dunes in a place where you’d least expect to find them, Kobuk also encompasses mountains, rivers, forests, and a wide array of wildlife that call its diverse ecosystems their home.

Hiking is a favorite activity here, but other things you can do during your visit include boating down the Kobuk River, seeing the annual migration of caribou, and flightseeing for a birdseye view of the park.

Keep in mind that getting to Kobuk can be challenging. You can fly from Fairbanks to Bettles or from Anchorage into Kotzebue, where you can take an air taxi to reach the park.

• Entry fee: Free
• Best time to visit: Summer is the best time to visit for bearable temperatures. The visitor center of Kobuk is only open between May and September.
• Closest airport: Ambler Airport (ABL/AFM)

• In addition to our usual road trip essentials packing list, you’ll want bear spray with you. Additionally, don’t be surprised you’ll need sunscreen and insect repellent in the summer.
• Be flexible with your plans. Light aircraft can only take off if weather conditions are clear. Things can be canceled; wildlife is certainly not guaranteed. Go in with expectations set not everything may go to plan!
• Budget for your trip. It is far from the cheapest family vacation you’ll ever make but we’re sure you’ll agree oh so worth it!
• Book early! With remoteness comes exclusivity. Lodging in most parks is extremely limited for stay overnight; you may want to plan up to a year in advance for a family vacation in Alaska.

While parks like the Grand Canyon or the Great Smoky Mountains attract millions of visitors every year, there are many more places in the United States’ national parks system that don’t nearly get the attention they deserve.

Home to 63 national parks, the United States has many incredible natural places to visit that offer exceptional outdoor destinations. Most people tend to lean towards visiting the most iconic ones, but with so many on the list, there are a few that don’t really see as many visitors, either because they’re somewhat remote or simply because they are rarely marketed.

Whether you’ve been to the popular national parks already, missed out on timed reservations at the most popular parks, or you’re simply looking to do something a little bit different, here’s a list of some seriously underrated national parks you’ve got to visit!

9 National Parks You May Have Never Heard Of

1. Dry Tortugas National Park

Location: Florida

If white sandy beaches and sapphire blue waters sound like your idea of a perfect vacation, you don’t need to visit the Caribbean or the Maldives in order to get just that!

Chances are you haven’t heard of Dry Tortugas National Park, and that’s totally okay – even most Floridians don’t know about it!

Dry Tortugas remains a hidden gem in Florida due to the fact that getting there isn’t exactly the easiest of tasks. In order to reach this national park, you’ll either need to take a ferry from Key West or a seaplane, which pretty much guarantees you’ll get the park almost all to yourself!

This national park is actually made up of 99% water, with only 1% of it being set on land. In order to explore the underwater side of Dry Tortugas, you can snorkel or dive to see colorful coral reefs and insane amounts of marine life thriving and kicking.

Entrance Fee: $15 per person (over 16 years of age) good for 7 days – included in ferry ticket from Key West, or pay on arrival cash if coming via seaplane. Camping is additional and must be pre-booked.

Operating Season: Open 24 hours throughout the year, although some islands are seasonally closed for breeding. Note hurricane season warnings may also be in effect from June to November.

2. Isle Royale National Park

Location: Michigan

Isle Royale is located in the middle of Lake Superior in the state of Michigan. While this may not sound like much, its location is pretty remote, which means the only way to reach this park is via seaplane or boat.

Despite the unbeatable beauty the landscapes at Isle Royale boast, it still remains pretty untouched by tourism, which means the nature and scenery you’ll find here are as raw as they can get. (In 2021 it was the 7th least-visited National Park in the US – and the second least-visited in the lower 48!)

Isle Royal harbors tons of amazing things to do, ranging from glorious hiking trials to scuba diving adventures. Moreover, there are also plenty of historic lighthouses and copper mining sites to explore in case you also want to get a dose of history on your national park visit.

A few highlights of visiting include scuba diving or snorkeling in order to see actual shipwrecks, hitting a few hiking trails, or spending a day or two canoeing and kayaking in order to explore the many islands that make up the park.

Entrance Fee: $7 per person, per day (ages 16 and up); Annual passes available for $60 (covering groups up to 4) or covered with America the Beautiful and other annual passes. If you don’t have your own boat you will also be paying for a ferry or private transportation.

Operating Season: Isle Royale National Park is open from April 16 through October 31. The island is closed from November 1 through April 15 annually due to extreme winter weather conditions. 

3. Voyageurs National Park

Location: Minnesota

Located almost on the Canadian Border in Minnesota, Voyageurs is one of the best-kept secrets of the northern United States, having received less than 300,000 visitors even during its busiest year!

The park is made up of a series of waterways that are interconnected, as well as several lakes. In fact, over 40 percent of the park is set on the water!

Voyageurs also offers the unique chance to see the Northern Lights, something that is not very common in the United States other than in Alaska. This makes Voyageurs a must if you’ve always wanted to see the aurora borealis but don’t necessarily want to leave the Lower 48.

Aside from offering all sorts of water activities like boating, fishing, kayaking, houseboats, and just about everything in between, Voyageurs also offers tons of adventures you can enjoy on foot. Hiking is prime here, and camping is pretty much out of this world, considering Voyageurs offers some of the clearest night skies in the country.

Moreover, wildlife spotting is a real treat here, with species like bears, foxes, and wolves commonly spotted inside the park, especially around the Gold Portage area, which you can reach on a canoe!

Entrance Fee: Free! (camping and houseboat permits are required, as well as boat tour reservation fees apply).

Operating Season: Year-round. Summer is boating whilst in winter, the park is transformed into a frozen lake making for a great Minnesota road trip. Icy conditions can make the park inaccessible in the should seasons, so bear weather warnings in mind.

4. Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve

Location: Colorado

Sand dunes probably aren’t the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Colorado, which makes this park even more special than it already is!

This national park homes the tallest sand dunes in North America, some of which rise higher than 700 feet! While that makes Great Sand Dunes incredible enough to visit, when you add the fact that these sand dunes are towered over 14,000 feet snow-capped peaks, you’re guaranteed a contrast of landscapes that feels almost out of this world.

During your visit, you’ll get to stand over the tallest sand dune in North America, sled down enormous dunes, go on a 4×4 drive across the desert, and camp under a billion stars (this national park offers incredible night skies!).

Entrance Fee: $25 per private vehicle valid for 7 days

Operating Season: Open 24/7 throughout the year but do take note of potential adverse weather from fall to spring. Some campgrounds closed in winter due to frigid conditions.

5. New River Gorge National Park

Location: West Virginia

Having only received its national park status in 2021, New River Gorge is fresh on everyone’s radar.

The park is far from unvisited, especially considering it received over a million visits in 2021. Still, however, for most people outside West Virginia, it still remains a shiny new park to check out in the system.

New River Gorge is mostly made up of an Appalachian canyon that offers plenty of opportunities to explore the 70,000 acres of land the park encompassed. From climbing on sandstone cliffs to going whitewater rafting to hiking, you’ll hardly get bored while exploring this brand new national park.

Operating Season: Open year-round

6. Black Canyon of the Gunnison

Location: Colorado

Often nicknamed the “Grand Canyon of the Rocky Mountains”, this massive canyon plunges a whopping 3,000 feet down into the ground.

The entire scenery you’ll find at Black Canyon of the Gunnison will make you feel almost as if you traveled back in time to the dinosaur era. One of the things that is extremely unique about the Black Canyon is the fact that, due to its deepness, the walls of the canyon only see 33 minutes of sun every day. This is why it received that name!

Driving the park’s Rim Drive is one of the easiest ways to explore this unique national park. The drive offers 12 scenic lookout points to the canyon, from where you’ll be able to get an idea of how deep it actually is. Other ways to explore are by going on a whitewater rafting adventure or canoeing in order to get an up-close view of the canyon.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even hike down to the bottom of the canyon. This trail takes about 5 hours to complete and is considered pretty challenging, but worth the effort as you’ll get a brand new perspective of the canyon. There’s actually a campsite at the bottom of Black Canyon in case you’re feeling up for a night of a lifetime!

Entrance Fee: $30 private vehicle pass valid for 7 days.

Operating Season: year-round. Winter open daily from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM (Temporary weather closures possible), Spring open daily from 9:00 Am to 4:00 PM. Summer open daily 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

7. Wrangell-St. Elias National Park

Location: Alaska

Covering over 13 million acres of land, Wrangell-St. Elias is the largest national park in the United States and also one of the least visited with only about 70,000 visitors every year. In fact, you’ll probably see more animals like wolves, moose, and grizzly bears than you will see people!

Home to four mountain ranges, some of the tallest peaks in the country, and the biggest system of glaciers in the country, Wrangell St. Elias wins plenty of prizes when it comes to adventures to offer!

Here, you’ll be treated to plenty of scenic roads to drive over, get the chance to go whitewater rafting over an extremely unique landscape, and even hike or go ice climbing over a humongous glacier called Root Glacier. There’s also an amazing backpacking trail known as the Skolai Pass, which offers views of the canyon, waterfalls, and more.

Entrance Fee: Free!

Operating Season: No entrance stations and it is public land so theoretically open year-round, but the season really only runs mid-May to mid-September for accessibility.

8. Guadalupe Mountains National Park

Location: Texas

Guadalupe Mountains National Park is home to the tallest mountain in Texas, expansive deserts, gorgeous canyons, and seas of sand dunes, making it a mecca for those keen to explore the wilderness in a desertic setting.

Plus, Guadalupe Mountains is extra interesting if you’re into paleontology. Because the region was once submerged underwater, it’s possible to see a lot of fossils of reefs and ancient marine animals encapsulated in the rocks all over the park.

Entrance Fee: $10 per person (over 16 years old) valid for 7 consecutive days.

Operating Season: Year-round.

9. Biscayne National Park

Location: Florida

If you want a mix of beach and nature on your next national park visit, Biscayne National Park has the best of both worlds.

This national park is located at the start of the alluring Florida Keys. The park is actually set 95% underwater, which means you need to swim, dive, or snorkel in order to see most of its highlights. If you’re not too keen on doing that, though, there are also glass-bottom boats available, from where you can see some of what’s underneath the water.

Of course, exploring on land is also an option, with several islands spread out all over the park that make up the remaining 5% of it. You can either take a hike, search for wildlife, or simply relax over the white sandy beaches of Biscayne!

Entrance Fee: Free entry but $25 per night to camp. Boat tours and snorkeling trips will be charged separately.

Operating Season: Open 24 hours year round.

By The Numbers – The Least Visited US National Parks

If you truly want to beat the crowds and up for an adventure, these were the least visited parks in 2021, according to the National Parks Service

It’s no surprise that most of these are pretty remote; inaccessible to most vehicles, you’ll need combinations of boats, light aircraft, and helicopters to get to these incredible protected lands – and in many cases, a fair bit of cash!
