Here’s a little secret: Winter just happens to be one of the best seasons to visit some of the most sought-after national parks in the country. Not only will you find fewer crowds to share the views with, but winter also brings in unique landscapes and scenery you’re not bound to find any other time of the year.

With that said, we’ve rounded up a list of some of the most epic national parks in the USA to visit during December to February so you can start planning your next winter getaway!

Epic USA National Parks to Visit in Winter

Death Valley National Park

Location: California/Nevada

Despite its somewhat desolate title, Death Valley National Park is actually home to a ton of lively scenery.

Picture massive salt flats lining the horizon, rock formations that look straight out of this world, colorful mountains dotting the roads, and a wide array of historical and desert goodness and you’ve got yourself a pretty good picture of what a visit to this gem of a national park is like.

Because Death Valley National Park is deemed one of the hottest places in the entire world, visiting during the summer months isn’t exactly recommended for a great experience (we’re talking 120+ degree temperatures!).

Winters, though, bring in cooler temperatures ranging from the mid-60s to the low 70s. Combine that with sunny skies and you’ve got yourself a perfect winter escape in one of the most unique landscapes of California, and the USA!

Arches National Park

Location: Utah

A fiery desert landscape may not be the first thing that pops to mind when you picture a winter trip, but the colder months just happen to be one of the best times of the year to pay Arches National Park a visit.

As its name may have clued you in, this beautiful national park in Utah is home to tons of natural archways (over two thousand of them!). Moreover, the park also boasts expansive mesas, otherworldly-looking rock formations that look as though they pierce the sky, and a vibrant red landscape that will make you feel as though you’re walking on Mars.

While temperatures do get chilly during the winter, it doesn’t really get cold enough to ruin the day. Moreover, Arches isn’t exactly popular during the winter months, making crowds at some of its most frequented spots almost non-existent (during summer, the crowds are so heavy a timed entry permit system has been introduced.

As if that weren’t reason enough to convince you to visit this epic national park during the winter months, the winter skies and dreamy snow-dusted La Sal Mountains in the distance make for truly magical sunrises and sunsets!

Biscayne National Park

Location: Florida

If you’d rather avoid the cold altogether and are on the lookout for a tropical escape, look no further than Biscayne National Park in Florida.

Set south of Miami, this park is so different from the rest because 95% of it is set under the water. This means you’ll definitely need to get wet in order to get to see everything, which you can do via a snorkeling or scuba diving adventure, depending on your preference.

Another way to explore for those who prefer not to swim is by booking a glass-bottom boat tour. This may not give you the chance to get super close to the marine life that calls Biscayne its home, but it’s guaranteed to provide some seriously epic encounters nonetheless.

Once you’ve explored the ocean, make sure you also check out the remaining 5% of the park, which is set on small islands and islets you can hike (or relax) on while stumbling across unique wildlife and views so good you’ll have to pinch yourself to believe they’re real!

Yellowstone National Park

Location: Idaho/Wyoming/Montana

Yellowstone may be a super popular summer destination, but how about seeing its already striking landscape from a completely different perspective?

During the colder months, Yellowstone becomes a winter wonderland of enchanting snow-dusted forests, frozen lakes, and gorgeous geysers that look straight out of this world. Moreover, you’ll also get to have the scenery at one of the most popular national parks in the entire country all to yourself!

Come November, getting to Yellowstone National Park does become a bit tougher as most roads are closed to regular traffic. Still, though, with a little planning ahead, you’ll be guaranteed to be in for a winter adventure of a lifetime!

Yellowstone is also set close to some of the country’s best ski resorts. Jackson Hole is located nearby, which is a perfect place to stay and enjoy world-class winter sports after adventuring at the park!

Canyonlands National Park

Location: Utah

Picture enormous sandstone spires that look as though they reach the clouds, extensive red rock canyons, and whacky-looking rock formations lining the scenery, and you’ve got a pretty good idea of what visiting Canyonlands National Park is all about.

Canyonland’s high season is during the spring and fall, but winter brings in picture-perfect sunsets, fewer crowds, and excellent hiking trails ready to be explored in order to take in the area’s desert magic.

Remember that snow may make a few of the trails at Canyonlands a bit treacherous, so we recommend sticking to the Island in the Sky section of the park during this time. This is the most popular part of Canyonlands, where crowds usually gather any other time of the year, making it an excellent choice to visit to get some of the park’s most famous highlights all to yourself!

Bryce Canyon National Park

Location: Utah

Ever wondered what Mars would look like if it got snowed on? If you haven’t, I bet you’re picturing it now, and the landscape at Bryce Canyon National Park during the winter months looks as close as you can get to that!

If you think Bryce Canyon’s striking red rock hoodoos are pure eye candy, imagine what they’d look like blanketed in white snow! As if that weren’t reason enough to visit, Bryce Canyon’s night skies during the winter are amazing as ever thanks to the cold and dry air, making stargazing here a true treat (make sure you bring a blanket along!).

Whilst some of the state’s most scenic driving routes through the park are closed in winter (as are many of the wilderness centers), it still makes for an excellent day trip from Seattle without some of the prohibitive summer crowds.

Acadia National Park

Location: Maine

Even though Acadia National Park is mostly renowned for its gorgeous fall foliage, visiting during the winter months provides a totally different experience worthy of being on your bucket list.

The contrast of the snow against the coastal views of the Atlantic creates a truly stunning background perfect for all sorts of winter fun. While scenic drives can be off the cards during winter, with the Park Loop Road usually closing from December 1 through until spring, winter hiking is a common activity, but make sure you bring the right gear.

Winter sports are another winter highlight in Acadia, with 45 miles of carriage roads for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing available. Snowmobiling is another top activity in Acadia, especially for those keen to experience the park’s scenic road from a totally different angle.

Moreover, birding in Acadia during the winter is top-notch, when leafless trees open up the forest for easy viewing. Some species you may see include snowy owls, black-capped chickadees, and Harlequin ducks.

Grand Canyon National Park

Location: Arizona

What could be better than seeing the most famous natural landmark in the United States and one of the 7 Wonders of the Natural World? Seeing it blanketed in layers of snow!

While the lesser-visited North Rim section of the Grand Canyon closes during the winter, the South Rim (which tends to get super crowded any other time of the year) remains open to visitors, giving you the perfect opportunity to explore the canyon without having to share the views with hoards of people.

If you’d rather stay warm, a great way to explore the park is by driving its scenic road to Desert View. Another must-do activity is booking a flight to get a birds-eye view of the canyon, which looks even more beautiful during the winter when it’s covered by snow!

Located less than an hour from Tucson, Arizona, Saguaro National Park still remains a bit of a hidden gem in the national parks system and a perfect go-to during the colder months!

This arid wonderland sits right in the heart of the Sonoran Desert, and its allure comes from the fact that it is home to the country’s largest cacti and saguaros, some of which can grow up to 60 feet tall!

During your visit, you can explore the park on foot by going on a hike (the Desert Discovery Nature Trail is a great way to learn about the flora in the area), taking a scenic drive amidst saguaros (the 8-mile Cactus Forest Loop Drive is a must!), or searching for ancient petroglyphs.

While snowstorms are not that common, they happen, so you may get lucky and see a scene of cacti coated in white snow! It’s certainly one of the more unique places to visit in Arizona.

Denali National Park

Location: Alaska

Alaska in winter?! If you don’t mind freezing temperatures, Denali National Park is a true treat during the winter months, even if snowfall actually starts as early as August!

Days are short in Denali during the winter, but that brings in opportunities to get glimpses of the northern lights, all while getting the landscape during the day pretty much all to yourself.

Moreover, if you happen to be visiting in February, you’ll be in for a real treat at the park’s annual Winterfest, where you’ll get to catch snow block sculpting competitions, guided walks, dog-sledding adventures, and so much more!

Note that once snow falls, the roads may frequently close at Mile 3, Park Headquarters. From late February/March ploughing begins and travelers may be able to make it as far as Mile 13, Mountain Vista Rest Area but it is weather dependent.

Entrance Fee: $15 per person (over 15 years) 7-day permit

Note that due to their remote nature, most national parks in Alaska are completely in accessible in winter. Denali is an exception due to its geographic location.

Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park

Location: Hawai’i

If you’d much rather see sunshine than snow, a visit to Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park is guaranteed to please.

Popular with snowbirds, this national park’s high season takes place during the winter, so if you don’t mind the crowds, it makes for a perfect destination to escape the cold.

As you explore the park, you’ll get to see black sandy beaches, rainforests with flora so huge you’ll feel as though you’re in a Jurassic Park setting and get to see two of the world’s most active volcanoes – Kīlauea and Mauna Loa.

Hiking is the best way to explore the park, with some trails being so unique you won’t find anything like them anywhere else in the world, including some through lava tubes and up to craters.

Everglades National Park

Location: Florida

Winters don’t really exist in Everglades. Instead, they’re usually considered the “dry” season when exploring is best!

Home to a whopping 15 million acres of pure wilderness, the park is home to a vast array of ecosystems, including marine, mangroves, swamps, and pinelands, making it a prime destination for wildlife spotting (fun fact: Everglades is the only place in the world where alligators and crocodiles co-exist!).

The White Mountains of New Hampshire are renowned for their stunning fall foliage, and the Kancamagus Highway (“the Kanc”)is the crown jewel of leaf-peeping routes. This 34-mile scenic byway winds through the heart of the White Mountain National Forest, offering panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and valleys awash in autumn colors. 4. Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming

5. Upper Peninsula, Michigan

Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is a fall color paradise, with vast forests of maple, birch, and aspen transforming into a sea of reds, oranges, and golds. The Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park is a highlight, offering 60,000 acres of old-growth forest and miles of hiking trails. The Lake of the Clouds overlook provides a stunning panorama of fall colors stretching to the horizon.

For a unique fall experience, drive the Tahquamenon Scenic Byway to Tahquamenon Falls State Park. 1. Rocky Mountain National Park

Location: Colorado

It’s not exactly a secret that Rocky Mountain National Park is one of the most beautiful parks in the entire country, but once the temperatures start to drop, this gorgeous place in Colorado turns into a wonderland for glorious views, incredible nature draped in autumn hues, and some of the best opportunities to see wildlife up close.

The dramatic landscape of Rocky Mountain National Park was carved by water and humongous glaciers, making the scenery look like something out of a painting.

As you explore, you’ll stumble across some of the highest peaks in the country, get treated to views of hundreds of alpine lakes and streams, and get to walk over some of the dreamiest hiking trails in the world.

Even though fall does get a little chilly at Rocky Mountain National Park, it’s highly considered the best time of the year to visit for two reasons: One is that fall foliage covers the gorgeous Trail Ridge Road, which is one of the most scenic highways in the United States and seeing it blanketed by golden aspens is a scene unlike any other.

Secondly, fall brings in the elk rut, which is when elk arrive in the area for mating season. Not only will you be able to see hundreds of them up close, but you’ll also be able to attend the annual Elk Fest organized by the park to learn everything about these mountain-roaming creatures through music, live entertainment, storytelling, and interactive activities.

2. Shenandoah National Park

Location: Virginia

Tucked away in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, Shenandoah National Park is a mecca for those looking for crisp mountain air and glorious fall foliage. Being only an hour from Washington, D.C., it’s no surprise it’s one of the most popular national parks on the East Coast!

Fall foliage in Shenandoah National Park usually begins in early October and lasts until mid-November, making the season quite long.

During your visit, you can explore the park in various ways. A favorite for those limited on time is driving the scenic Skyline Road, Virginia, which is considered a treat to the eyes any time of the year but looks especially stunning when fall colors drape the scenery.

Hiking is another must. Shenandoah boasts 516 miles worth of trails, with 101 miles being part of the famous Appalachian Trail! Throughout your hiking adventures, you’ll be able to enjoy fall colors in their full splendor and see plenty of waterfalls, mountains, caverns, and more.

Seasonal Closures: Fall is the peak season for Shenandoah, so do expect queuing and crowds, especially on weekends. You can check out precise conditions on their webcams!

The park stays open throughout winter; however, icy conditions can close Skyline Drive from mid-November through February. Dickey Ridge Visitor Center and lodges within the park close in late November. Most campsites close on October 30, while Big Meadow stays open until November 30 for magnificent fall camping.

3. Acadia National Park

Location: Maine

Acadia National Park definitely takes the cake when it comes to quintessential fall destinations on the East Coast.

Even though Acadia is gorgeous year-round, there’s no better time to visit than the fall months, especially if vibrant autumn colors are what you’re after.

Home to a humongous offering of glorious natural landscapes ranging from woodlands to mountains, lakes, and dramatic coastlines, this is one of the best national parks to visit in the fall if you’re after picturesque views and a variety of recreational activities.

Once September creeps in, Acadia starts showing beautiful fall colors ranging from crisp gold to vibrant reds. Peak season usually happens around mid-October, but even if you can’t make it during that time, you’ll still find a wonderland of colors if you visit a bit earlier or later.

Some of the best ways to make the most out of fall in Acadia include hiking to Cadillac Mountain for panoramic views, driving the Park Loop Road across the park, hiking the Bubbles Nubble Loop to strike off a variety of landscapes, and exploring Eagles Lake by kayak or canoe.

Location: Utah

Perhaps a desert isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when you think of visiting national parks in the fall, but we absolutely had to include Arches National Park in the list because this time of the year is the best time to explore this gem in Utah.

Weather-wise, the temperatures in Arches start to drop in autumn, making it an ideal time for hiking and exploring.

The trails at this Mighty 5 national park are usually mild and perfect for introducing visitors to hiking in the desert. Visitors can also see colossal natural arches and strange rock formations that look almost out of this world.

Some of the best things to do at Arches National Park include hiking to Landscape Arch to see the largest natural rock arch in the world, experiencing a sunrise at Delicate Arch (this is the arch depicted on Utah’s license plates!), driving the Arches Scenic Drive, admiring the scenery at Park Avenue Point, standing under Double Arch, and more.

Entrance Fee: $30 per private vehicle, valid for seven days

Seasonal Closures: The park is open throughout the year, 24 hours a day. However, if you’re visiting before October 31, you’ll also need a timed entry permit.

5. Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Location: North Carolina and Tennessee

With so many species of trees within its boundaries, Great Smoky Mountains National Park is another wonderland to visit if you want to see fall tones. Seeing vibrant hues of yellows, oranges, and reds backdropped by snow-capped mountains is definitely something everyone should experience at least once in their lives!

Some of the best things to do in the Smokies to fully experience the season are hiking to see a few of the park’s waterfalls (they look absolutely stunning surrounded by autumn colors!), driving the scenic roads that traverse the park (Newfound Gap Road, Morton Overlook, and Clingman’s Dome Road are all amazing), and renting a cabin inside the park to enjoy your very own personal slice of fall in the park.

Fall also brings a plethora of fun festivals, including the Dollywood Harvest Festival, which celebrates the harvest season; the Fall Harvest at the Island, which honors the fall; and the Octoberfest at Ober, which features the area’s German heritage.

Fall foliage usually begins around early October and can be viewed throughout the month until early November. It usually peaks in mid-October.

Entrance Fee: There is no entry fee to Great Smoky Mountains National Park (from 2023, be aware a Parking Tag system will be implemented – applicable if you’ll be parking your car for more than 15 minutes)

6. Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Location: Ohio

As the only national park in Ohio, Cuyahoga Valley is one of the best national parks to visit in the fall if you’d rather check out somewhere that’s not on everyone’s usual radar.

Here, you’ll enjoy crisp evenings and bright sunny days, making this time of year ideal for hiking and exploring (and you’ll find fewer bugs than in the summer!).

Fall foliage usually peaks around the third week of October, but you’ll be able to enjoy the colors pretty much all month, making it one of the prettiest scenic drives in Ohio.

One of the favorite ways for visitors to explore Cuyahoga is by hopping on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad Train, which, as its name may have clued you in, is a train that traverses the valley and provides some of the most beautiful views the entire park has to offer.

Another way to explore is to hike a few trails inside the park. There are over 120 miles of them on the menu. If you’re limited on time, we recommend focusing on the Brandywine Falls trail to see a 65-foot waterfall, the Virginia Kendall Ledges Trail to walk down sandstone rock “ledges,” and the Pine Grove Trail to see beautiful colors.

7. Mount Rainier National Park

Location: Washington

Boasting an active volcano and the most glaciated mountain in the continental United States, Mount Rainier is another wonderful option in PNW when choosing what national parks to visit in the fall.

Mount Rainier is special because it encompasses many different ecosystems, ranging from lowland forests to wetlands and alpine tundra. Moreover, there are 26 named glaciers here and over 1,000 species of plants and animals, many of which are incredibly endangered and have found a safe haven inside the park.

Once the fall season begins, Mount Rainier bursts into life with different activities. An easy day trip from Seattle, a must-do is going on a naturalist-guided walk to spot Roosevelt Elk during the breeding season in September. Other fun things to do during the autumn include going berry picking and mushroom foraging.

As for hiking, some of the best fall hikes to try include Reflection Lakes, The Morain Trail, Third Burroughs, and the Knapsack Pass. Horseback riding is also a wonderful way to explore the park.

8. Bryce Canyon National Park

Location: Utah

Bryce Canyon National Park is guaranteed to please if you’re more in the mood to escape fall altogether and experience an entirely different landscape.

This striking national park in Utah is famed for being home to the most extensive collection of hoodoos in the world, but due to its location in the desert, summers tend to get scorching hot and winters particularly cold, making fall an ideal time to visit for bearable temperatures.

While there aren’t any fall-themed activities during the season, fall offers a wonderful chance to explore some of Bryce Canyon’s most famous parts without the hordes of crowds, but before the frostiest days of winter.

Some of the best ways to make the most out of your visit include hiking the Queen’s Garden to Navajo Loop, following the Fairyland Loop, and joining a ranger-led program to understand the park’s unique geology fully.

9. Grand Canyon National Park

Location: Arizona

With the summer crowds dwindling at the beginning of September, fall is a beautiful time of the year to visit the United States’ most iconic national park.

Not only will you see one of the country’s most internationally recognized natural landscapes without so many people around, but fall means crisp air and much more comfortable temperatures for hiking.

Even though the Grand Canyon isn’t exactly a destination for foliage, if you want to add that to your itinerary, the North Rim section of the park has plenty of patches of golden aspens.

This brings in a unique perspective of the landscape, which looks absolutely gorgeous when splashed with bright yellow tones, especially in late September and early October.

Moreover, fall is also a great time to see the Grand Canyon’s wildlife. With cooler temperatures and crowds gone, animals like elk, mule deer, chipmunks, bats, and plenty more reptiles start showing up on trails and even around some of the lodges and campsites at the park.

10. Glacier National Park

Ellensburg, WA

Heading east on I-90, the first major stop on this Seattle to Glacier National Park road trip is Ellensburg. You’ll reach it in just about two hours, depending on traffic. Making it the perfect distance to get out and stretch your legs while exploring this great little town.

Heading back on the road after Ellensburg, continue east on I-90 to Spokane.

Leavenworth, WA

If you want a cool Bavarian stop-off on your Seattle to Glacier road trip, then set the navigation for Leavenworth, WA. Depending on traffic, you’ll follow Route 2 out of the city for about two hours. As soon as you arrive in town, you’ll realize you’re in for some seriously good fun. 

Wenatchee, WA

Wenatchee is just a short 30-minute drive down the road from Leavenworth. But it’s such a great place to spend some time. We just had to make it a stop on this Seattle to Glaciers National Park road trip. The truth is that if you don’t want to make two stops so close together, then pick one to do on the way to Glacier National Park and one to do on the way back. 

Spokane, WA

Spokane and neighboring Spokane Valley are a must-stop on any Seattle to National Glacier National Park road trip. It’s got just about everything you’re looking for in the perfect stop-over. No matter what route you take out of Seattle, you’ll get to Spokane in about three hours from either Ellensburg or Leavenworth/Wenatchee. 

Flathead Lake, MT

Flathead Lake is something you just can’t miss on your road trip from Seattle to National Glacier National Park. The drive from Spokane will take about four hours, so it’s the perfect place to stop and relax for a day or two. This majestic lake is beautiful to see and a ton of fun to experience. 

Waterton Lakes National Park, Canada

The US side of Glacier National Park makes up half of the remarkable International Peace Park. The other half is the beautiful Waterton Lakes National Park in Canada. So, no Glacier National Park road trip is complete without visiting this sister park to the north.

• Check out the NPS website for information on reservations and fees required for Glacier National Park. But here are the big things to know before you go:
  • Reservations and vehicle registrations are required to enter the park from May 26 through September 10 between 6 am and 3 pm. 
  • Make sure to book your vehicle registration in advance. They are released four months in advance, so you should really do it then. If you miss it, they release it more than 24 hours before. But honestly, it’s best to plan in advance. Go to Recreation.gov to make reservations.
  • Different sections of the park require separate reservations. So you’ll need to make them for Going-to-the-Sun Road, Many Glacier, and North Fork.
  • Glacier National Park is open 24/7. So you can enter the park without a vehicle registration before 6 am or after 3 pm during the high season. For more specifics, check out the NPS website.

1. Montana Scenic Drives: Going-to-the-Sun Road 

• Distance: 50 miles 
• Time Needed: 2 hours or 1 day, depending on the stops  

One of the top highlights of Glacier National Park and an absolute must for scenic drives in Montana, Going-to-the-Sun Road gives you a front-row seat to the wonders of Montana.  

Crossing the Continental Divide at Logan Pass, this winding mountain road brings you past plummeting waterfalls, through valleys covered in wildflowers, and along mountain ridges.  

Keep in mind that this particular Montana scenic drive usually requires reservations (sometimes, this is waived during slow seasons). When planning your trip to Glacier, add this to your travel itinerary to make sure you don’t miss out!  

2. Montana Scenic Drives: Beartooth Highway  

• Distance: 68 miles  
• Time Needed: 3 hours to several days  

If you’re taking a road trip in Montana and planning on visiting Yellowstone, then the Beartooth Highway is the perfect drive for you.  

Traversing the border between Montana and Wyoming, this scenic highway has been labeled not only as one of the best drives in Montana, but one of the best drives in the United States! Waterfalls, mountain vistas, and alpine lakes are all in store during this drive.  

Portions of the Shoshone, Custer, and Gallatin National Forests are all included in the route. These regions are some of the best places to spot wildlife like bison, antelope, elk, and maybe even a grizzly bear!  

3. Montana Scenic Drives: Paradise Valley Scenic Loop 

• Distance: 62 miles 
• Time Needed: 2 hours to several days  

Paradise Valley is one of the most scenic areas along the Yellowstone River, and this loop is the perfect way to experience all the wonders of the region. With all there is to see and do in the valley, this drive could be your entire vacation in Montana!  

The drive begins in the town of Livingston and then follows the Yellowstone River south. You can continue on the road to Gardiner and then either keep south toward Yellowstone National Park or loop back north to experience the drive on the opposite side of the river.  

Along the way, you’ll have endless opportunities for fishing, river rafting, horseback riding tours through the mountains, or hiking. Stay at one of the lodges or campsites in the Paradise Valley to really make the most out of your time on this Montana scenic drive! 

When to go: This drive is open year-round, but it’s best to check for road closures, particularly in winter, before setting out.  

4. Montana Scenic Drives: Skalkaho Highway Scenic Drive  

• Distance: 45 miles 
• Time Needed: 2 hours to 1 day  

If you’re looking for a more remote and secluded scenic drive in Montana, then the Skalkaho Highway is the route for you.  

Traversing the Sapphire Mountains in the southwestern region of Montana, you can enjoy the peaceful tranquility of mountain valleys, cascading waterfalls, and stunning vistas.  

The narrow switchback roads are mostly gravel, so it’s recommended to have a four-wheel drive when taking this route.  

There are plenty of places to stop along Skalkaho Creek to explore hiking paths, go fishing, or simply get photos of the waterfalls. If you want to spend more time in nature, you can check out the campsites along the Bitterroot Valley, so spend a night or two next to the creek.  

5. Montana Scenic Drives: Big Sky Backcountry Byway 

• Distance: 105 miles  
• Time Needed: 2 hours to one day 

After driving this scenic byway in Montana there will be no doubt left about how the state got its nickname of the “Big Sky” state. Traversing over 100 miles of the beautiful prairie landscape, the huge expansive blue sky and red rock formations will leave any traveler speechless.  

Along the way, you can stop to get photos of some of the incredible rock formations, including sand bridges and table-top mesas. In the Terry Badlands, you’ll get to see fascinating layers of colorful sediment in the canyons.  

The area is also known for its wildlife, such as elk, deer, antelope, and numerous species of birds.   

At one end of the drive in Terry, Montana, you’ll be right on the banks of the Yellowstone River. At the opposite end of Wolf Point, you’ll be on the Missouri River, which is well known for its fishing and water activities. 

6. Montana Scenic Drives: Lake Koocanusa Scenic Byway  

• Distance: 67 miles  
• Time Needed: 2 hours to 1 day 

Connecting the towns of Libby and Eureka, the Lake Koocanusa Scenic Byway follows the Kootenai River and the shores of Lake Koocanusa for a stunning exposition of Montana’s mountainous landscape.  

The drive is well-maintained and open year-round, but if you want a more backcountry experience, you can add the Forest Development Road 228, although this portion is closed during the winter.  

This is one of the best drives in Montana to view the famous big horn sheep, which make their homes in the rocky outcroppings and ledges surrounding the lake. There are plenty of places to pull off to get photos of the wildlife and landscape.  

How Long is the Drive From Glacier National Park to Banff?  

If you’re looking to drive straight to Banff from Glacier National Park without really stopping, your three routes will take just over four hours on Route 2 (AB-2), just under 5 hours on Route 22, and closer to 6 hours on Route 93 & 95. 

Keep in mind that you will be crossing the Canadian border on this trip. Wait times and border control will definitely tack on more time to your trip, no matter which routes you take.  

Let’s be honest here, doing this Glacier National Park to Banff road trip is all about enjoying the ride. So instead of rushing to get there, you could make the trip over a number of days. Even up to a week or 10 days.

Best Time of Year to Drive Glacier National Park to Banff 

Both Glacier National Park and Banff are open year-round. So you could make this epic road trip at any time, but when travelling between the late fall and early spring, you’re likely to find parts of the parks and major roadways closed.

That’s why the best time of year to drive to Banff from Glacier National Park is during the summer months. Between late June and early September, you’ll have the best chance for warm weather, open roads, and gorgeous scenery.

• Pro Tip: There is a Canadian Glacier National Park too. Although it’s a fabulous place in its own right, this Glacier to Banff itinerary is all about the US Glacier National Park

Glacier National Park, US  

You’ll be starting off your Glacier National Park to Banff road trip in one of the most beautiful places in North America. Known as the Crown of the Continent, you’ll be in awe of the park’s alpine meadows, valleys, mountain lakes, and of course, glaciers. 

The outdoor adventures in Glacier are endless. You’ll love hiking any of the 700 miles of trails and visiting the lakes and glaciers. 

Camping within Glacier is ideal. Various options, from tents to RVs. Remember to make reservations ahead or try your luck at the first come, first served sites.  

Going-to-the-Sun Road and Logan Pass are must-dos at Glacier. Depending on what route you plan to take for your Banff road trip, the scenic Going-to-the-Sun will easily get you to the east or west side of the park. 

Pro Tip: Make sure you have everything you’ll need for Glacier National Park, including vehicle reservation and park pass – it is one of the few US National Parks with timed entry rules. Requirements change depending on the season, so stay up to date with info on the NPS website.

Waterton Lakes National Park, CA

Just to the north of Glacier National Park is its Canadian sister, Waterton Lakes National Park, a must on the Glacier to Banff itinerary.

The drive between the two parks is only about 50 miles. Take Montana Highway 89N to 17N, then in Canada, follow AB 6 North to AB 5 West. Be prepared to cross the Canadian border at Chief Mountain.

Together, Waterton Lakes and Glacier form the impressive International Peace Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Make sure to visit the Peace Park Plaza for gorgeous views and reflect on the park’s goal of peace and goodwill between the two nations of North America.

In the park, you’ll enjoy hiking the terrain like on the Lineham Falls trail, driving scenic roads like Akamina Parkway and taking in the view from Bear’s Hump trail.

Pro Tip: Waterton Lakes National Park entry fees are $10.50 per person, with discounts for seniors. Kids 17 and under are free.

Kootenay National Park, CA

Kootenay is another one of Canada’s splendid national parks. Located just to the southwest of Banff, it’s the perfect stop on the Glacier National Park to Banff road trip. On the other hand, it might be better suited to visit on the return trip, making it a Banff to Kootenay National Park journey instead.

Either way, Kootenay is an absolute must. You’ll love hiking the 125 miles of trails and driving on the scenic Banff-Windermere Highway. Located in the magnificent Canadian Rockies, you can even walk along the Great Continental Divide. After a day exploring the park, relax by soaking in Kootenay’s Radium Hot Springs.  

Unique to Kootenay, you’ll be able to find Burgess Shale fossils while on hikes in the park. These fossils are over five million years old.

Calgary, CA

Calgary is a definite stop to make when doing the Glacier to Banff road trip from the east on either Route 2 or 22. As the largest city in Alberta, there’s so much to do and see. 

Kids will love to see all the animals at the Calgary Zoo and step back into time at the Heritage Park and Historical Village.

If you’re doing the Banff road trip in the summer definitely make plans to visit The Calgary Stampede. As the largest rodeo, there’s so much to see and do during the 10-day event.

Get the best view of the city from Calgary Tower. You’ll see discounts on ticket prices when you buy online. Perfect for the whole family, kids under 13 and seniors enjoy a reduced price. 

If you’re looking to just have some fun with the family head to Calaway Park in nearby Springbank. Open daily in the summer. It’s the best outdoor amusement park around.

Canmore, CA

Canmore is a great place to stop just before arriving in Banff when coming from Calgary (less than an hour away). You’ll love strolling down 8th Street with the mountains in the background. It’s the perfect place to get a bite to eat and window shop. Don’t miss taking a family photo in front of the “Big Head” sculpture in Canmore.

Explore underground at the Canmore Caves. The best way to experience it is with a guide that will help everyone in the family enjoy the dark caverns. The minimum age for tours is 10, making the Canmore Caves great for families with older kids. 

Yes, your final destination is the magnificent Banff, but just outside, in Canmore, is another natural beauty not to miss. Grassi Lakes in the Canmore Nordic Centre Provincial Park have the most incredible blue-green waters you just have to see. The hike to the water’s edge is a perfect way to stretch your legs on this Glacier National Park to Banff road trip.

Pro Tip: You may also find accommodation a little cheaper in Canmore, and the streets a little less crowded, though the secret is out, it may not stay this ways for long!

Banff National Park, CA

Here it is: Your final destination on this Glacier National Park to Banff road trip. Known across the globe, Banff is not only Canada’s first national park, it is also the world’s third UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The astounding beauty of mother nature is overflowing in Banff. Everything from the rugged mountains of the Canadian Rockies to the pristine turquoise lake waters is impressive in photos but jaw-dropping in person. 

There are so many ways to experience Banff. Get an aerial view on a Banff gondola ride to the top of Sulphur Mountain. Paddle through the incredibly blue waters of Moraine Lake. Relax in the hot spring waters of Banff Upper Hot Springs. Get an up-close look at a glacier like the Plain of Six Glaciers at Lake Louise. 

• With summer traffic around Banff you should look to park and ride from May to early October. The summer shuttle services run from Parks Canada Park & Ride in Banff to Lake Louise and Moraine Lake – pre-booking for desired timeslots a must. (Last minute tickets released on a rolling basis 8am MDT 2 days prior)

Something not to miss is a drive along the Lake Louise Icefields Parkway. Travelling north along the Canadian Rockies, the Icefield Parkway is one of the most scenic roads in North America. You’ll love the views of the rugged mountains, waterfalls and over 100 glaciers.

Banff Accommodation

One of the best ways to experience Banff is to stay within the park itself. Camping options range from glamping and full hookup sites to backcountry camping. Although some sites are first come, first served, it’s best to plan ahead and make a reservation well in advance.
