When to Plan Your Canadian Wildflower Adventure

Due to Canada’s northern latitude, wildflower season typically starts later than many international visitors might expect. While cherry blossoms may bloom in Vancouver by March, most of Canada’s wildflower displays don’t begin until late April or May.

The season then rolls like a wave across the country from west to east and south to north, with some Arctic and alpine regions not reaching peak bloom until July.

Coastal British Columbia sees the earliest blooms, followed by southern Ontario and the Prairies in May, while Maritime provinces and mountain regions peak in June and early July.

The extended daylight hours of the Canadian spring and early summer mean you’ll have plenty of time for flower viewing, with some northern regions offering nearly round-the-clock viewing opportunities during peak season.

Best Places to See Blooms in Canada

1. The Okanagan Blossom Trail, British Columbia

• Peak Bloom: Mid-April to early May

Wind your way through British Columbia’s sun-drenched Okanagan Valley, where orchards burst into pink and white blooms against a backdrop of rolling hills carpeted with arrow-leaved balsamroot and lupines. Start in Vernon and meander south through Kelowna to Penticton on Highway 97.

The route offers families plenty of kid-friendly stops, including the Davison Orchards Country Village, where children can take tractor rides through flowering orchards. Time your visit for the Okanagan Cherry Blossom Festival in April, featuring family activities and guided “blossom tours.”

Stay overnight in Kelowna, where lakeside hotels provide the perfect base for exploring. Don’t miss the short hiking trails at Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park, where spring brings patches of chocolate lilies and yellow bells.

2. Prairie Crocus Route, Manitoba

• Peak Bloom: Late April to mid-May

Follow Highway 16 west from Winnipeg through Riding Mountain National Park for a prairie wildflower experience your family won’t forget. The delicate purple prairie crocus, Manitoba’s official flower, carpets the grasslands in early spring.

The route takes you through charming small towns like Neepawa, known as the “Lily Capital of the World.” In Riding Mountain National Park, the family-friendly Prairie Trail offers easy walking access to wide meadows filled with three-flowered avens and white prairie crocuses.

Stay in Wasagaming, the park’s townsite, where the Clear Lake Trading Post offers ice cream treats and rental bikes. Spring brings the return of bison to their summer grazing grounds – a thrilling sight for young wildlife enthusiasts.

3. Bruce Peninsula Flower Trail, Ontario

• Peak Bloom: Early May to mid-June

The drive north along Highway 6 from Wiarton to Tobermory offers families one of Canada’s most diverse spring wildflower displays. The limestone-rich Bruce Peninsula hosts over 44 species of orchids alongside countless other wildflowers. Best Stops on a New York to Niagara Falls Road Trip

On this epic road trip from New York to Niagara Falls, we’ve mapped out the best stops to make along the Hudson Valley, through Albany, and along the coast of Lake Ontario. 

Hudson Valley (Beacon, Poughkeepsie, Kingston)

Just to the north of New York City is the incredible Hudson Valley. Indeed, this beautiful place starts only about 50 miles north of the city, but depending on traffic, it might be the best place to get out and stretch your legs after a few hours in the car.

Cherished for its gorgeous landscape on the banks of the Hudson River, there are several lovely places to visit in the Hudson Valley.

Beacon has a bustling village center with quaint boutiques, antique shops, and places to eat. Go for a hike on Mount Beacon for a great view of the valley. Dia Beacon, a contemporary art museum, is a must-see for anyone interested in the arts. 

Home to three different colleges, including Vassar and Marist, Poughkeepsie is a must-stop on any New York to Niagara road trip. There are plenty of places to eat, shop, and explore, including the Walkway Over the Hudson. For a bit of history, check out Locust Grove Estate, home to inventor Samuel Morse. 

Kingston is a city with a vast history and character in the Hudson Valley. Not only does it date back to the 17th century, but it was the first state capital of New York. Today, you’ll find tons of great shops, restaurants, and bars. Consider taking a ride on the Catskill Mountain Railroad or a Hudson River sightseeing cruise.

Pro Tip: Everyone knows there’s going to be traffic getting out of NYC. So, no matter what time of day or night you plan to go, use a navigation app to avoid massive delays. And if you get stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic, don’t lose your cool. Just go with the flow. You’ll get there, eventually.

Albany

One hundred and sixty miles to the north of New York City the next major stop on this New York to Niagara Falls road trip is Albany, the state’s capital city. To learn all about the impressive building and state legislation, you can take a tour of the State Capitol building. 

The New York State Museum has something for everyone, including a hands-on center for kids. The Crossings at Colonie is a great park where everyone in the family can have fun hiking, biking, and being kids on the playground.

Stroll the colorful Lark Street, which is full of shops, restaurants, and galleries. To get into the beautiful wilderness of Upstate NY, don’t miss the Albany Pine Bush Preserve, one of the remaining pine bushes in the country.

As a major city, there are plenty of places to stay in Albany on your drive to Niagara Falls, like the Morgan State Inn or the Renaissance Albany Hotel. Folks who are RVing check out Thompson’s Lake Campground at Thacher State Park.

Utica

Nestled at the foot of the Adirondack Mountains is the city of Utica. Although the drive west from Albany takes about an hour and a half, it’s totally doable, with a couple of super cool stops along the way.

In less than an hour’s drive west of Albany, you’ll be able to travel deep underground to discover the wonders of Howe Caverns. Fun for everyone in the family: seniors and children enjoy discounted tickets. Children four and under are free. Just make sure to reserve tickets ahead of time. 

Another great stop-off on the way to Utica is the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. Open daily, you’ll love learning all about the history of America’s pastime and seeing priceless artifacts. Discounts are offered for children, seniors, and veterans. Active military and children 6 and under are free.

Once in Utica, it’s easy to find tons of stuff to do. If you’re hoping to see more of the beautiful landscape, hop on the Adirondack Scenic Railroad. Kids will also love seeing the animals at the Utica Zoo.

Oswego

Known as “The Port City,” Oswego is a beautiful city on Lake Ontario with history, culture, and fun. History buffs will love exploring Fort Ontario and learning about its long history. Open Wednesday through Sunday, from spring until early fall.  

Other cool things to do in Oswego include checking out the murals along the Oswego River Walk and experiencing the awesome view from Flat Rock. Let the kids be kids at the Children’s Museum of Oswego, which is open Tuesdays through Sundays. 

Families looking to max out the fun in Oswego on a drive to Niagara Falls should consider staying at Splash Indoor Water Park and Resort. The fun never stops at this Clarion Hotel with its indoor water park and arcade. 

Heading west from Oswego towards Rochester, definitely make a stop at Chimney Bluffs State Park. With incredible land formations and views of the lake, you’ll be happy you made time for this awesome park. Entry fees are $5 per vehicle and only collected April 1–October 31.

Rochester

Traveling west along Lake Ontario for only an hour and a half, you’ll arrive at the next destination on this New York to Niagara Falls road trip, Rochester. There’s always something interesting to do in Rochester. That’s why it’s a no-brainer when deciding where to stop when driving from New York to Niagara Falls. 

Kids of all ages will love spending time at The Strong National Museum of Play (open daily), the Seneca Park Zoo (open daily), and the Rochester Museum & Science Center (closed Mondays). 

For outdoor adventure, head out on Lake Ontario or kayak on the Genesee River. There are plenty of places to stroll or walk in Rochester, like walking along the Erie Canal and enjoying Cobb’s Hill Park. 

To appreciate the magic that is a camera (even if it is just a simple function on your smartphone), definitely visit the George Eastman Museum while in Rochester. You’ll learn about how, as the founder of the Eastman Kodak Company, he revolutionized photography.

Once you’ve had your fill of Rochester, it’s time to hit the road again, onto the final destination: Niagara Falls. Although it’s been an epic road trip driving from New York to Niagara, there’s nothing quite like getting to see the incredible falls and experiencing everything the area has to offer. 

There are so many different ways to experience the falls. You can see it from observation decks, boat tours, or even venture behind the falls for a truly unique experience. 

For a full bird’s eye view of all three falls, head up to the Niagara Falls Observation Tower on the New York side of the falls. Or get your adrenaline pumping by ziplining over the falls on the Canadian side. No matter which way you choose to experience the falls, you’ll be making memories to last a lifetime. 

Another awesome idea is to hike the Niagara Gorge State Hiking Trails. With various hikes, from beginner to challenging, just about everyone in the family can enjoy the beauty of Niagara on foot.

Best Time to Visit Toronto

The best time to visit Toronto depends on what activities you’d like to do and things you’d like to see. Eastern Canada’s weather tends to operate at extremes, meaning that the winter month are very cold and harsh while the summer months are very hot.

Autumn and springtime in Toronto are milder and may be more comfortable for younger kids, but there’s plenty to do year-round in Toronto.

June through August is the peak travel time in Toronto. The city has plenty of annual summertime things to do, including outdoor movies, foodie festivals, pedestrian Sundays at the market, the Chinatown festival, and more. 

Once autumn hits, the beautiful fall foliage takes over the city, and it’s a visually beautiful time of year. Come November, the lead-up to the holidays begins with light festivals and Christmas markets, and there may even be some early snow!

Getting Into the City of Toronto

Assuming you are arriving by air, Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) is located about 40 kilometres (25 miles) from the downtown area. There are several public transportation options for getting into the city without a car.

The fastest option is the UP Express, a direct rail link from the airport to Union Square that takes less than half an hour. Ticket kiosks can be found at the airport (adult fare is $12). There’s free Wi-Fi and lots of baggage space, so it’s a smooth and relaxing ride into town.

If you’re headed somewhere other than downtown, you can get off at either of the two stops along the route which connect to bus services or the TTC Subway, but keep in mind that those services are a separate fare.

The cheapest option would be bus transit. This costs only $3.25 for the full route, but you’ll need to transfer at Kipling Station and switch to the TTC or another bus. Ask the driver about this when boarding and they’ll sell you the ticket for the full journey.

If you’re prepared to pay around $75-100, Uber or taxis are the easiest journey since you don’t need to worry about missing your stop! It may also be the least stressful option if your kids are young and you’re worried about corralling the family onto public transit.

How to Get Around in Toronto 

Although Toronto is pretty big, you probably won’t need a car if you’re planning on staying in the downtown area. Traffic can be unpredictable—especially on the weekends – and it will be cheaper to get around on foot or via public transit.

Riding the TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) – that includes the subway system, streetcar lines and bus routes – adults pay $3.35 per ride, youths (13-19 years) are $2.40 and your under 12’s are free to ride making it a great option for families to get around in Toronto.

If you think you’ll be hoping on and off public transit several times in one day, get a PRESTO day pass.

The TTC Subway also connects some of the outer municipalities with the rest of the city. Lines 1, 2, and 3 are the ones that are most closely connected to downtown Toronto.

There are also buses, and a streetcar network that spans the entire downtown area, so public transportation is a great way to get around. Plus, it will be more cost-effective than a rental car, Uber, or taxi.

In nice weather, Toronto is a great city for exploring by foot, especially if you follow the harbourfront. 

Things to Do During a Day in Toronto By District

If you’ve only got one day to explore the city, seeing the iconic sights is the best way to get the most out of it. If you have the extra time, try to add in a few hidden gems, too — Toronto has plenty!

Entertainment District / Old Toronto

• The CN Tower is a must-see. Though it’s long been dethroned as the world’s tallest building, it still clings on as #10 on that list, and the view from the observation deck are pretty incredible.
• It’s also well-known for its Edgewalk Experience, where you can walk on the edge of the tower over a glass floor (this is an expensive sight at $195 per person, but it’s definitely one of the coolest things you can do in the city!). If that’s not your thing or you’re not keen on heights, there’s also a great revolving restaurant inside where you can sit and enjoy a meal with a view.
• Rogers Centre is the home of the Toronto Blue Jays (the only Canadian team in Major League Baseball) and the largest stadium in the city. It’s just down the street from the CN Tower so it’s easy to do both before moving to a different area. It’s a great experience to catch a game here if you have the time! 
• The Hockey Hall of Fame is another great option for sport-loving kids. Home of the famous Stanley Cup and with lots of interactive experiences, it’s great for both kids and adults, especially if you’re an NHL fan!
• Ripley’s Aquarium is another family favourite, and it’s very kid-friendly. It’s got plenty of exhibits that kids will love, like the tunnelled conveyor belt where sharks swim overhead and the colour-changing jellyfish exhibit.

You won’t fit all of these into one morning but we’d set your one day Toronto itinerary to experience at least one to these top attractions.

The Distillery District

The Distillery District is a cool neighbourhood made up of brick heritage buildings that once housed a huge whiskey distillery. Today, it’s full of cobbled streets and heritage buildings, distilleries, restaurants, and shops.

This is considered a great spot for foodies so would make an excellent place to time your lunch stop. You can also find foodie walking tours around here. Some places to check out here that would interest the kids:

• SOMA Chocolatemaker for homemade sweet treats. They even make their own chocolate from scratch!
• Cluny Bistro & Boulangerie for French-inspired dishes in a very chic setting
• Madrina Bar Y Tapas for Mexican and Spanish dishes, and they have a kid’s menu
• The St. Lawrence Market is about halfway between the Entertainment District and The Distillery District, but it’s worth a stop! Divided into two main market areas, South and North, it’s home to dozens of vendors selling fresh produce, artisanal meats and cheeses, homemade baking, and even gifts. There are also regular flea and craft markets.

In any case, no matter the order it’s a sure thing that you’ll fall in love with the diverse family activities Toronto has to offer.

It is a long journey from Toronto to Vancouver as you will drive the Trans Canada Highway for approximately 4,265 km, passing through 3 provinces. Along the route, you will pass through Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta before reaching your destination of British Columbia. 

Route 1 – Trans Canada Highway

There is only one route from Toronto to Winnipeg, which takes about 22 hours and navigates around the Great Lakes until you reach Manitoba.

Once you reach Winnipeg, you have the choice to take the Northern Route and explore Saskatoon and Edmonton or take the more scenic Southern Route that takes you through Regina, Calgary, and Banff.

Along the scenic Southern Route, you can explore lots of untouched natural areas, visit National and Provincial parks, and enjoy the views of the mountains and lakes.

Route 2 – US Route via I-94 W and I-90 W

An alternative route is to cross the Canada-United States Border to Seattle and then pass across the border again to reach Vancouver. Some key locations to include in your road trip are Detroit, Chicago, Sioux Falls, Rapid City and Billings through Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, Washington, and Seattle. Be prepared that there are tolls on this route. 

How Long Do I Need to Drive from Toronto to Vancouver:

The total trip is about 42 hours of driving time, which ideally should be split up into a minimum of 5 days to avoid fatigue and to enjoy the beautiful Canadian landscapes, natural areas, cities and towns, as well as a variety of fun attractions.

There are so many beautiful places along this Canadian route that you will want to stop and enjoy and visiting attractions is a great way to get out and stretch your legs. 

A good goal is to plan to drive between 5-8 hours a day, depending on the age of your passengers. An important part of this road trip is the destinations between Ontario and British Columbia, not just the final destination.

Realistically, to make memories and enjoy the Canadian road trip across the country, you will want to plan to take a week. You can definitely take longer to truly enjoy all of the amazing Parks Canada spots, unique landscapes, attractions and cities.

Best Time of Year to Drive from Toronto to Vancouver:

The most popular time of year to drive across Canada is in the summer, from June to August when the roads are clear and dry. However, this is peak tourist season, so it will be very busy with tourists.

If you have some flexibility, you may enjoy viewing the fall foliage along the Trans-Canada Highway during the early Fall (September to October), or you may enjoy the awakening of nature and wildlife in the Spring (Mid-April to May) due to rapidly changing weather and road conditions you want to avoid driving the Trans-Canada Highway from November until Mid-April.

Best Stops on a Toronto to Vancouver Road Trip:

Day One Toronto to Sault Ste Marie – 700 km (8 Hours Driving Time)

Start your day exploring all the typical Toronto attractions found in our things to do in Toronto guide, and then hit the road to begin your road trip. As you head north from Toronto, you will head towards the beautiful cottage country in the Muskokas.

Muskoka is a great place to enjoy outdoor activities, including hiking, boating, and paddling. If you are looking to enjoy the area by hiking, then check out Limberlost Forest and Wildlife Reserve, Hardy Lake Provincial Park, or the Muskoka Wharf Trail, which offers various difficulties of hiking. Enjoy fishing or water sports on the scenic lakes of Lake Muskoka, Lake Rosseau, and Lake Joseph.

If you’re travelling in the summer, then be sure to check the dates as Muskoka hosts various festivals and events throughout the summer, such as the Gravenhurst Dockside Festival of the Arts, Bracebridge Fire and Ice Festival, and the Muskoka Ribfest.

If you love the outdoors, then you may want to stop and check out all the amazing things to do in Algonquin Park, including lots of wilderness areas and wildlife viewing. On the way to Sault Ste Marie, the largest city you will pass is Sudbury. 

Sudbury has so many cool attractions to visit, including the Big Nickel, which is great for photographs, an interactive science museum called Dynamic Earth, where you can experience underground mining, and lastly, kids will love the hands-on exhibits at Science North.

As you get closer to Sault Ste Marie, you will enjoy the beautiful rugged coastline along Lake Superior, and you can stop to watch the boats pass through the Soo Locks. 

Day Two Sault Ste Marie to Thunder Bay – 700 km (7.5 Hours Driving Time)

Northern Ontario has a vast array of beautiful landscapes, so plan to stop multiple times along the way and take some breathtaking photos. If you have some extra time before leaving Sault Ste Marie, then take the Agawa Canyon Tour and enjoy taking photos of the natural areas in the canyon.

Along this stretch of the drive, you will want to stop at the halfway point of the Trans Canada Highway at Chippewa Falls, which is a famous waterfall that was painted by the famous Canadian painters The Group of Seven.

Continue further and stop at Pancake Bay Provincial Park and enjoy the sandy beach on the shores of Lake Superior. The landscape in the North of Ontario is beautiful including the cliffs of Old Woman Bay.

If you are travelling with kids, you may want to stop at Paddle-to-the-Sea kids’ playground in Nipigon to give the kids a chance to burn some energy.

While it is a detour to the east of Thunder Bay, if you enjoy hiking, the outdoors and spectacular views you can’t miss stopping at Sleeping Giant Provincial Park. Hike to the Top of the Giant Trail and Thunder Bay Lookout and enjoy viewing the geological features and breathtaking views of Lake Superior.

Along this route, there are some unique sculptures, including the Winnie the Pooh sculpture in White River, as well as a museum in the birthplace of this famous children’s character.

On the outskirts of Thunder Bay, you may want to stop to see the famous sculpture of Terry Fox, who was a Canadian hero who ran a Marathon of Hope to raise awareness for cancer.

Day Three Thunder Bay to Winnipeg – 700 km (7.5 Hours Driving Time)

The drive from Thunder Bay to Winnipeg takes you through a scenic portion of northwestern Ontario and southern Manitoba known as the Canadian Shield. A small town along the route that you will want to stop at is Atikokan, which is home to Quetico Provincial Park.

In the park, you can enjoy canoeing on the pristine lakes, hiking rugged terrain, or viewing the scenic railway trestle bridge.

Once you reach Manitoba, enjoy a day at Falcon Lake by spending the afternoon swimming, boating or fishing and then spend the evening viewing the shops and restaurants at Falcon Lake Townsite.

Another cool attraction to visit is the Pinawa Dam, which you can explore as you walk along the dam and learn more about hydroelectric power and how it’s used in Manitoba in the visitor center. Those who enjoy history may want to stop at the Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site to see a fur trading post and learn more about the area’s past fur trading history. 

Day Four Winnipeg to Regina – 572 km (6 Hours Driving Time)

Enjoy the Canadian prairies and all the interesting stops along the way, although there are some long stretches of highway between Winnipeg and Regina, so stock up on snacks before hitting the road.

A major attraction in Winnipeg is Assiniboine Park. Kids will love visiting the zoo, and parents can enjoy the beautiful walking trails and gardens. Another unique stop along the route is the small town of Ste. Agathe has a cool artsy vibe as you can stretch your legs, stroll through town and enjoy the murals that teach about the history of the area.

There is not much to see between these two locations other than the Doll Museum in Brandon, the heritage Swinging Bridge and walking trails in Wolseley. 

Day Five Regina to Calgary – 758 km (7 Hours Driving Time)

Before leaving Regina, head to Sandra Schmirler Leisure Center playground and spray pad if you are travelling with kids. After leaving Regina, one of the first stops you can make on this leg of the trip is the Tunnels of Moose Jaw which is an hour-long tour that gives you insight into the prohibition era in Canada.

The Tunnels of Moosejaw has three different guided theatrical tours to choose from including Chicago Connection, Bunker 24 and the Passage to Fortune.

A few other great stops before leaving Saskatchewan include the interpretive nature trails at Chaplin Nature Centre, the historic museum in Swift Current and the sand dunes at Great Sandhills Ecological Reserve.

As you enter Alberta and head towards Calgary, there are a few stops along the way that you will want to make, including the Medalta in the Historic Clay District, which is a ceramics factory, the interpretive trail at the Brooks Aqueduct, and the tranquil Japanese gardens in Lethbridge at Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden.

Day Six: Calgary to Revelstoke – 408 km (4.5 Hours Driving Time)

The best part of this entire drive is this section of the trip that takes you from Banff to Calgary, as the landscape is one of a kind, featuring the natural beauty of mountains, wildlife, historical sites and clear turquoise lakes.

Check out our detailed guide on the drive from Banff to Vancouver, however, some major stopping points include the popular tourist attraction of Moraine Lake which is a beautiful glacial-fed lake that has a magnificent view but is always super busy during the peak tourist season.

If you or the kids are not in the mood for hiking, consider riding the Banff Gondola to the upper boardwalk, where you can enjoy the fantastic vistas of Banff town and the nearby mountains.

There is so much to do in Banff with kids, including Upper Banff hot springs, Johnston Canyon hike, Johnson Lake hike, Bow Falls, and Cave & Basin National Historic Site. At the summit, you’ll discover a restaurant offering delightful food and beverage choices. If you are looking for some quiet lakes to visit then checkout Peyto Lake and Lake Minnewanka.

Some stops you will want to make as you travel through the Canadian Rockies include Lake Louise, Emerald Lake and the Spiral Tunnels at Yoho National Park, as well as Glacier National Park. All of these stops offer scenic views, hiking trails, and lots of opportunities for outdoor exploration.

If you enjoy history you may want to stop at the Rogers Pass National Historic Site to see the exhibits that explain the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway and its impact on Canada before stopping in at Revelstoke for the night.

Day Seven: Revelstoke to Vancouver – 565 km (6.5 Hours Driving Time)

Revelstoke has rugged mountain summits, tumbling waterfalls, picturesque lakes, and lush cedar woodlands. It offers numerous exciting, family-friendly adventure opportunities to explore. 

Revelstoke is a small town with a thriving outdoor tourism scene, as you can enjoy hiking and biking some of the popular trails, including Mount Revelstoke Summit Trail, Eva Lake Trail, and the Frisby Ridge Trail for biking. 

Make sure if you’re travelling with kids to check out the two different mountain coasters at Mount Revelstoke. Kids will also enjoy becoming a River Pirate as they experience a pirate adventure on the Columbia River with Wild Blue Yonder Rafting Adventures, where you will experience pirate stories sing-along-song, all while floating down the river and taking in views of the wildlife.

Lastly, don’t miss seeing the Enchanted Forest, which is home to British Columbia’s tallest treehouse. 

Arriving at your destination of Vancouver which has an extraordinary setting, surrounded by mountains and the sea. Vancouver offers an experience for families of all ages, providing a blend of breathtaking scenery, exciting tourist attractions, and vibrant city life.

Toronto to Halifax Road Trip: How Long Do I Need To Drive?

How far is Toronto to Halifax?

The distance from Toronto to Halifax is 1455 km (approx. 904 miles), and it takes 16-20 hours to drive if you are going to drive straight from one location to the next.

Since this route can be a physically and mentally tiring drive, it is advised that you break up the journey over two to three days to allow time for sleeping, meals, rest stops and exploring attractions and events along the route.

Here’s an example of how you could break up the driving distances:

Staying on the Canadian side is quicker and takes about 17 hours. However, you can cross the border and drive through New England, but this way takes an additional two hours.

The US route takes you through upstate New York, Massachusetts, Vermont and Maine before re-entering Canada in New Brunswick for the trip’s final leg. 

This road trip will take you through four provinces: Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and finally, Nova Scotia. You may want to split the routes into chunks, such as Toronto to Ottawa, Ottawa to Quebec City, Quebec City to New Brunswick, and New Brunswick to Nova Scotia. 

Prince Edward County

Start the journey by following Highway 401 from Toronto alongside Lake Ontario, and be sure to stop for a quick dip at one of the beautiful beaches in Prince Edward County.

Sandbank Provincial Park: This park offers a sandy beach perfect for picnicking, sunbathing or enjoying a refreshing dip!

Taste Local Agriculture and Wine: Prince Edward County is an agricultural hidden gem of Ontario and offers many different wine tours allowing you to taste award-winning locally produced wines while enjoying the picturesque countryside. Be sure to stop at a local farm-to-table restaurant, bakery or food market to try some of the local cuisine grown in the region.

Outdoor Activities: If you enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking or cycling, then you may consider exploring the natural landscape on one of the region’s scenic trails, quiet country roads, or even on the waterways by kayak.

Kingston, Ontario

There are a ton of family-friendly activities in Kingston, making it a great place to stop for a few hours or even overnight. 

Waterfront: Kids will enjoy feeding the ducks and swans or watching the boats sail by while walking along the Kingston Waterfront. There are lots of playgrounds, and a few ice cream stops as well!

Trolley Tour: Enjoy a trolley tour to see the history, architecture and landmarks of Kingston, including the famous Kingston Penitentiary that you can now tour inside. You can choose either a city tour or a hop-on-and-off tour to explore the city’s main attractions and learn all about the history of the city.

Pump House Steam Museum: Located in a historic 19th-century waterworks building. Kids can explore interactive exhibits, learn about steam power and watch demonstrations of steam engines.

Family Fun World: This outdoor activity family hub has go-karts, batting cages, and bumper boats for the whole family to compete and enjoy!

Ottawa, Ontario

Ottawa is a great location to stop during the first leg on your way to Quebec City, as it is about the midway point.

Parliament Hill: Start your visit to Ottawa at Parliament Hill and learn more about Canada’s history and political scene. During the summer months, you can even see a daily changing of the guard ceremony outside on the lawn. 

Rideau Canal: Enjoy this UNESCO world heritage site by taking a walk along the canal, stopping for a picnic, renting bikes or renting a paddle boat or canoe to explore the canals.

Calypso Waterpark: One of the best outdoor waterparks in Ontario, ideal for families of all ages to enjoy thrilling slides, a lazy river, splash areas and wave pools.

Museums: Ottawa is rich in history and is home to the Canadian Museum of Nature, where you can get up close and learn more about Canadian wildlife. Learn more about Canadian history at the Canadian Museum of History, located in Gatineau, Quebec.

Quebec City

This is a great overnight stop on your road trip to Halifax, as it is a picturesque city and is about 8 hours from Toronto, making it a good time to stop for the night. Halifax is about 10 hours from Quebec City.

Old Quebec: Discover the rich history of Quebec City as you explore the cobblestone streets, unique shops and restaurants located in Old Quebec, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Don’t forget to stop for a croissant in a local bakery. 

Plains of Abraham: After spending so much time in the car, the kids will have the energy to burn. You can take them to this park that offers beautiful views of St.Lawrence, walking trails, and lots of space to have a  picnic. 

Parc de la Chute-Montmorency: Guests can either take a cable car or climb the stairs to reach the top of this 83-foot fast-flowing waterfall. Adventurous families may also enjoy the suspension bridges and zip lines available.

New Brunswick

This is a great stop for the last leg of your trip to Halifax. The Bay of Fundy National Park sits on the border of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia and is a natural wonder of the world for having the highest tides in the world.

Hopewell Rocks: These unique flowerpot rock creations are the best spot to walk the ocean floor during low tide and then watch the water rise even during the time you are visiting.

Fundy National Park: Visitors will enjoy stunning hiking trails with breathtaking coastal views, great picnic areas, flowing waterfalls, and beautiful beaches to enjoy some swimming. 

Whale Watching: If you have extra time or have never seen a whale up close, you will want to book a whale-watching tour from nearby St.Andrews or Grand Manan Island. On the whale-watching tour, you may see humpback whales, minke whales and other endangered whales in North America.

Beaches: As you continue towards Halifax, you will pass some beautiful beaches, including Parlee Beach in New Brunswick and Halls Harbour in Nova Scotia.

Coastal Kayaking: If you are travelling with adults or older kids, you may consider checking out the Bay of Fundy coastline by water on a kayaking tour that will take you to unique rock formations, marine life, and hidden coves.

Local Culture and Food: Check out nearby fishing villages such as Alma, which have great restaurants to taste local seafood straight from the sea. Some of my favourites include Tipsy Tails, where you can view the charming small harbour from the patio, or a quicker option is Fundy Takeout. Also, check out Buddha Bear Coffee and Holy Whale Brewery to try some other local gems.

Citadel Historic Site

Halifax offers a unique history that can be seen through architecture and historical sites such as the Halifax Citadel Historic Site, which sits on the hill above the harbour overlooking the city of Halifax.

The Citadel was established in 1749 as a British Military Post and is a unique star-shaped fortress that was originally built to protect the British people and the harbour during the War of 1812 and World War and was integral to defence.

The fortress is built of stone and still features a historical defensive structure as well as interactive displays that will teach visitors about military life and the strategies used during combat. One of the unique daily events you don’t want to miss is the Changing of the Guard ceremony, where soldiers dressed in traditional 78th Highland Regiment kilts and red coats reenact this age-old military ritual.

Downtown Waterfront

The boardwalk along the Halifax Waterfront is lovely to stroll and take in the scenic views or stop at some of the many unique places for photographs, such as the hammocks, Muskoka chairs, or many unique art installations. 

The Halifax waterfront is where the city meets the sea and is a mix of old charming historic buildings and new modern amenities. Located along the waterfront, you will find unique restaurants that serve fresh seafood, local shops that sell tourist treasures and some of the best saltwater taffy, busy markets and lively pubs featuring local talents. 

Enjoy a Harbour Hopper Tour

Located nearby the waterfront is the Harbour Hopper Tour which allows you to learn about the history of the land and sea in Halifax as you enjoy an hour-long tour that splashes right into the harbour. This tour bus is amphibious and can turn into a boat.

Take a Ferry

Children will enjoy the quick journey from downtown Halifax to Dartmouth across the harbour, spanning approximately 15 minutes onboard the Ferry. This trip provides breathtaking views of the Halifax skyline, and Dartmouth has some great shops and restaurants, including Portland Street Creperie. 

Maritime Museum of the Atlantic:

Visitors can learn how shipbuilding, navigation, fishing and the role of the Ocean have influenced and shaped the culture and economy of Halifax. The museum teaches guests about maritime life’s history as they view historic artifacts, documents and interactive exhibits.

Historians will enjoy the museum and visit the model ship collection, including the famous RMS Titanic. Halifax has a strong connection to the Titanic as many of the found personal belongings, letters and stories connected to the Titanic are now shared through exhibits housed in the museum.

Kids will enjoy dressing up in Maritime-themed clothing and enjoying hands-on activities. Children will also enjoy checking out the CSS Acadia located outside, where they can explore multiple decks and areas of this large boat. 

Located just outside the Maritime Museum is a unique underwater-themed playground that is in the shape of a submarine that kids of all ages will love! There is also a unique wave structure that kids enjoy climbing. 

Halifax Public Gardens

These gardens offer stunning vibrant floral displays and are one of the oldest Victorian Gardens in North America. Halifax Public Gardens’ design was influenced by the Victorian era as it features geometric flower beds, ornate fountains, ironwork fencing, tranquil pong and an intricate bandstand.

From tulips and roses to dahlias and lilies, the garden bursts with color and fragrance throughout the blooming season and is the perfect place to stop and enjoy a picnic or sit and relax.

The gardens also offer space for recreational activities like frisbee, kite-flying, and outdoor games, and during the summer months, you can catch live performances on the bandstand. In the middle of the park sits the historical Horticultural Hall, which has been transformed into a small charming cafe that serves coffee, tea, snacks and delicious ice cream on the back deck.

Fisherman’s Cove

This beautiful fishing village is located 20 minutes from the Halifax waterfront along the Eastern Passage and can be accessed by car or by boat as there is a public access dock. As you stroll past all of the beautiful coloured buildings along the boardwalk, you will not only enjoy the fresh sea air but also enjoy the scenic view of the Halifax harbour in the distance.

Fisherman’s Cove is a great place to shop for Maritime arts and crafts created by local artisans, including clothing, books, candles, jewelry, paintings and much more.  If you are hungry, you will enjoy one of the many patios specialising in seafood, fish and chips and offering ice cream to finish your meal.

If you have more time to explore consider checking out MacCoramacks Beach Provincial park or charter a boat to go deep sea fishing or visit Macnab Island.

There is so much more to Nova Scotia than just Halifax, so don’t miss out on the breathtaking scenery of Nova Scotia, which offers a multitude of captivating sights. With over 7600 km of coastline, Nova Scotia, known as Canada’s Ocean Playground, entices visitors to explore the province by taking one of many scenic road trips in Nova Scotia.

One of the most majestic drives in the US is one that goes from Chicago to Niagara Falls. Passing along two of the Great Lakes, you can’t beat the beautiful scenery and the ultimate bucket list destination. 

There are a couple of routes to consider when planning your Chicago to Niagara Falls road trip. Do you want to head straight east, exploring the southern shore of Lake Erie?

Or could you consider first spending some time along the eastern shores of Lake Michigan before crossing into the land of our Canadian neighbors to the north?

If you’re not quite sure which route is best, you’re in luck. We’ve mapped out three different ways to road trip to Niagara Falls from Chicago and the best places to stop along each one.

Distance from Chicago to Niagara Falls

The most direct route to get from Chicago to Niagara Falls will take you through Kalamazoo and Detroit, over the Canadian border towards Hamilton, and on to Niagara Falls in just about 520 miles.

Staying Stateside, you could hug the southern edge of Lake Erie, passing through cities like Toledo, Cleveland, Erie, and Buffalo for a total of 580 miles to Niagara.

How Long Do I Need Driving Chicago to Niagara Falls?

The fastest route from Chicago to Niagara Falls can be done in about eight hours. But seriously, why rush? 

There’s so much to see and do along the way that it’s a much better idea to take your time and spend two to three days on the road. Then, on your way back, you can change your route and see even more of this incredible landscape as you drive from Niagara Falls to Chicago.

Best Time of Year to Drive Chicago to Niagara Falls

Hands down, the best time of year to do a Chicago to Niagara Falls road trip is in the summer. The reason? It’s when you’ll have pleasant temps in the ‘80s. Making the time in the car easy to stop, stretching your legs, and enjoying everything along the way. It also means that the mist from the falls will be refreshing rather than bone-chilling like at other times of the year.

Best Stops on a Chicago to Niagara Falls Road Trip 

Saugatuck & Grand Rapids, MI

A great place to make a stop along this part of the trip is the beautiful beach town of Saugatuck. You’ll get there in just about three hours traveling along the shores of Lake Michigan on I-90 to I-94, then I-916. 

Here, you can stretch your legs on the beach, climb the dunes at Saugatuck Dunes State Park, or just enjoy the town’s shops and restaurants. This lovely place is definitely worth a stop on your road trip to Niagara Falls from Chicago – if not a standalone family lake vacation!

Once you’ve reached Grand Rapids, the kids will love to visit the John Ball Zoo. There are so many animals to see and even ones they can pet. You’ll see some really cool things at the Grand Rapids Public Museum, including a skeleton of a Blue Whale, an antique steam engine, a planetarium, and a good ol’ carousel, making it a must-visit when visiting the city.

If your family needs a bit of outdoor time, head to Millenium Park while you’re in Grand Rapids. This fabulous place is so much more than just a park. For outdoor family fun in London, head to Boler Mountain. No matter the season, you’ll be in for a ton of fun, like hiking, mountain biking, tubing, rope courses, and skiing. 

Everyone in the family will love experiencing the past at the Fanshawe Pioneer Village where the past comes to life. Hours of operation vary with the season so make sure to check before heading there.
London is a great area for camping and RVing. There are tons of parks to choose from, including Prospect Hill Campground and Dalewood Conservation Area.

St. Joseph, MI

Just over an hour and a half from Chicago, you’ll arrive in St. Joseph. Yes, it is relatively early on the road trip to Niagara Falls from Chicago. But, as one of the best beach towns in Michigan, it’s a must-stop town. Set on the banks of Lake Michigan, it’s the perfect place to spend some time before heading west toward Niagara Falls. 

Here you can enjoy the lake with the many sandy beaches like Silver Beach. With lifeguards on duty, everyone can have fun in the water. 

Definitely check out Warren Dunes State Park. Hiking up and surfing down the dunes is the best way to release energy before getting back in the car for the rest of the road trip ahead. Or, simply swim in the freshwater. If it’s a hot summer day, let the kids cool off at the Whirlpool Campus Fountain.

Ann Arbor, MI

Ann Arbor is a great stop on the road trip from Chicago to Niagara Falls and just about a 2.5-hour drive from St. Joseph on I-94E.

You’ll love exploring the beautiful campus of the University of Michigan. As a town of intellectuals, there are a bunch of great places to visit in Ann Arbor, like the University of Michigan Museum of Art and the Natural History Museum. Kids will also love going to the Ann Arbor Hands-on Museum where they’re encouraged to touch everything!

If you’re taking this trip in the summer, check out the Ann Arbor Summer Art Festival (A2SAF). There are fun things for everyone in the family. You can also paddle the Huron River or in Gallup Park for some outdoor water fun.

If you’re doing this road trip in an RV, you’ll find a bunch of nice places to park. Although they won’t be in the center of town, you’ll find great places just a short drive away, like Sun Outdoor Kensington Valley and Hell Creek Ranch Campground.

Hamilton, ON

In less than four hours of a drive from Ann Arbor on this Niagara Falls road trip, you’ll reach Hamilton. During this leg of the trip, you’ll be passing over the border into Canada so, have the proper ID ready. In Canada, you’ll travel on Highway 401, then the 403. 

Within the city limits, Hamilton has a bunch of its own waterfalls, like Albion Falls, Tews Falls, and Great Falls.

Families that love a good hike can hit the Bruce Trail– The oldest and longest in Canada. You’ll absolutely love exploring the beautiful landscape and waterfalls like Canterbury Falls. For a more relaxing stroll, head to Hamilton’s Bayfront Park.

Other awesome things to do in Hamilton include touring Dundurn Castle, the Battlefield House Museum, and Park National Historic Site. Or check out the Art Gallery of Hamilton, Museum of Steam and Technology.

Hamilton is only a short drive from Niagara Falls (about 40 mins), but it’s such a great place that it should be a major stop for your Chicago to Niagara Falls road trip.

Toledo, OH

Keeping it state-side, you’ll be passing through Indiana and into Ohio. This leg of the trip will take you just about four hours to get to Toledo.

There are tons to do in Toledo for the whole family. Get everyone out of the car and go for a hike in Maumee Bay State Park or enjoy any of the city’s Metroparks, like the brand-new Glass City Metropark.

Kids of all ages will love seeing the animals at the Toledo Zoo and Aquarium. For a real hands-on experience, consider going to the Imagination Station, where they will learn by doing (closed on Mondays).  To learn why Toledo is called Glass City, check out the art at the Toledo Museum of Art and see a glass-blowing demonstration (open Wednesday through Sunday).

Cleveland, OH

From Toledo you’ll travel just over three hours on I-90E to reach Cleveland, the next stop on this road trip from Chicago to Niagara Falls.

One of the best things to do in Cleveland, no matter your age or ability, is to visit the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Here you can go for a hike, take a stroll, enjoy a ride on the scenic railroad, kayak the Cuyahoga River, and bike the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail. The best part of it all is: entrance to the Cuyahoga Valley National Park is free for everyone!

Back in the energetic city, there’s something for everyone. Kids will love the Children’s Museum of Cleveland (closed Thursdays), Great Lakes Science Museum, and Cleveland Museum of Natural History (closed Mondays). 

Make sure to spend some time on the waterfront for sports, dining, or even just a simple stroll along the water. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a must-do 

Pro-Tip: Make Cleveland your major stop on the way back to Chicago from Niagara Falls. It’s a longer drive (3.5 hours from Niagara Falls and five hours to Chicago) but totally worth it to spend a full day or two in the city.

Erie, PA

During this epic Chicago to Niagara Falls drive, Erie is a great place to get out and experience the beauty of the Great Lakes. You’ll love relaxing on the beach, like Sands Beach in nearby Harborcreek. Or, head to Presque Isle State Park, where there are great beaches, hiking, and a lighthouse to explore. 

Other things not to miss in Erie are the Zoo (open daily), Hagen History Center (closed Mondays), ExpERIEnce Children’s Museum (open Wednesday-Sunday), and the Erie Maritime Museum (open Wednesday-Sunday).  

For one of the best views of the lake, you’ll want to hike the Erie Bluffs State Park. 

If you’re looking for a super unique experience the entire family will love, head out on the waters for Scallywags Pirate Adventure. It’s one you’ll never forget!

Leaving Erie, jump on I-90 East again towards Buffalo.

Buffalo, NY

Now, Buffalo is literally just down the road from Niagara Falls, but it’s just a great place to spend some time that we just had to put on this itinerary as its own stop. 

There’s so much for families to do in Buffalo. Make sure to put both the Buffalo Zoo and Buffalo Museum of Science on the itinerary. The Buffalo Waterfront is the perfect place to spend some time, especially in the summer. Everyone in the family will get into the fun with things like water bikes, kayaking, roller skating and playgrounds.

When you’re ready to continue on your Niagara Falls road trip, you can opt to cross the Peace Bridge into Canada or stay stateside and head up to the falls. Either way, the drive will take about half an hour. Remember to have your documents ready for the border crossing at the Peace Bridge.

Niagara Falls, NY & ON

No matter which route you take to get here. Your final destination is the great Niagara Falls. On The US or Canadian side, this spectacular place has been a favorite destination for centuries. And it continues to be one of the best vacation spots for the entire family. 

There are so many ways to experience the falls. Check it out from observation decks on boat tours like the Maid of the Mist, which will get you up close to the base of the falls.

The Cabot Trail is a loop, so you can drive in either direction to explore the local Acadian culture, outdoor activities, and food in the small fishing villages of Baddeck, Cheticamp, and Ingonish.

Located in the Bruce Peninsula National Park is The Grotto, which is a famous hiking trail that weaves you through limestone caves until you reach the beautiful shores of Georgian Bay.

While you are in the area, explore the unique fishing village of Tobermory, and then check out Fathom Five National Marine Park to explore 19 islands, including Flowerpot Island and shipwrecks by glass bottom boat. This area is the scuba diving capital of Canada!

If you have a few days for this scenic Ontario road trip, head to the ferry to explore Manitoulin Island, the world’s largest freshwater island.

3. Calgary to Jasper – Alberta

Time to Explore: 1-2 days

One of the most scenic drives in Western Canada as the landscape is ever-changing from bright blue lakes, mountain ranges, forests, wildlife, and glaciers. Leave the busy city life of Calgary and head to these natural paradise locations.

This gorgeous road trip will take you through two National Parks: Banff and Jasper National Park. This route has many unique family-friendly activities to do along the way, including hiking in National parks, exploring small towns, swimming, shopping, hot springs, kayaking, and much more!

Your first stop should be in Canmore, where you will want to visit the pedestrian-only 8th street that has multiple boutique shops, restaurants, and cafes, all while seeing the Rocky Mountains in the background.

If you have little kids and want to skip the hike, then take the Banff Gondola up to the top, where you can walk the upper boardwalk and view the town of Banff and surrounding mountains from the Lookout.

4. Sea to Sky Highway – British Columbia

Time to Explore: 1 Day, 2 hours of drive time

The Sea to Sky (Highway 99) runs from Vancouver to Whistler and takes you along the water of the Howe Sound, which is a fjord to the snowy mountain tops of Whistler.

The Sea to Sky Highway has a deeply rooted connection to First Nations culture, and history, as the land is the ancestral territory of the Squamish (Skwxwú7mesh) and Lil’wat First Nations.

Start your road trip at Whytecliff Park and head to the coastline to view the beautiful Howe Sound, or check out the trails for incredible views of the surrounding area. Or, if you choose to skip Whytecliff Park, then stop at Porteau Cove, which is a small provincial park with a beautiful day-use area surrounded by mountains.

Kids may enjoy a stop to learn more about the history of the area at the interactive mining museum, where you get to immerse yourself in the experience as you wear a hard hat and head down into an old mine by train.

As you get closer to Squamish, you will want to stop at Mount Garibaldi, which is a dormant volcano, or check out the 335-m-tall Shannon Falls, which are 3rd largest in British Columbia.

Lastly, you won’t want to miss out on the Sea to Sky Gondola that carries you past granite cliffs to the top of the track, where you can view the Howe Sound below. At the top, you will find a kid-friendly flat 1.6 km trail with viewing platforms and a suspension bridge.

For those who prefer a challenge and adventure, you can save money and climb up the mountain trail that climbs 900 meters and is 7 kilometers long. This trail takes about 3.5 hours, and you can take the gondola on the return for a reduced price.

5. Fundy Coastline – New Brunswick

Time to Explore: 3-5 Days

The Fundy Coastline is home to beautiful coastlines,  the world’s highest tides, and quaint fishing communities. Enjoy visiting the unique coastline and fishing villages that have been created by the sea. This natural tour will show you Atlantic Wildlife, Outdoor adventures, and amazing food like Atlantic fish and Chips or a Lobster Roll fresh from the Sea.

Your first stop has to be to visit the low and high tides of Hopewell Rocks, as it is a sight to see! Walk on the ocean floor around giant sea stacks, then take out a kayak as the water rises up to 4 ft, and you can explore the sea stacks.

Check out the small fishing community of Alma, which has a few shops and great restaurants that have amazing patios on the water, and you can check out local fishing boats. Not too far from here is Fundy National Park, where you can spend the entire day exploring beautiful lush trails of varying difficulties and even stop to relax in the famous red Muskoka chairs.

Continue along the Fundy trail parkway to check out the beaches, lookout points, waterfalls, and observation decks of North America’s Eastern Seaboard as you head to Saint John’s.

6. Eastern Townships – Quebec

The Eastern Townships have three different routes that highlight the hidden gems of Quebec: The Wine Trail, Townships Trail, and Summit Drive.

The Wine Trail is a 25 kilometer route that features 22 different wineries that offer unique picnic spots for lunch, as well as wine tastings. In the fall, some wineries even encourage tourists to help harvest the grapes and stomp on them to start the process of making wine.

Townships Trail is a 430-kilometer route for history lovers and focuses on the history of Quebec and its American and British Roots. Learn about the first inhabitants of Quebec and how they settled the land as you visit 31 villages that have many interpretive sites, museums, and historic locations to explore.

Summit Drive is a 193-kilometer route for outdoor enthusiasts as you stop in little villages surrounded by lakes and rolling mountains. This area is known for being part of the International Dark Sky Reserve, offering breathtaking views of the stars.

7. Journey to Churchill – Manitoba

Time to Explore: 2-3 Days

Take Highway 6 along the shores of Lake Manitoba as you head through multiple land treaty zones on your way towards Hudson Bay and Churchill – the Polar bear capital. Stop in Lundar to check out the marshlands that are home to ducks, songbirds, and pelicans at Lundar Beach Provincial Park.

Along the route, you want to stop at check out the most photographed area in Manitoba – Steep Rock. Unique limestone rock formations overlook the lake and make for great lookout points.

If you are looking for adventure off the beaten path, then check out the boreal wilderness of Paint Lake, which is the largest lake in Manitoba, and offers secluded beaches and beautiful hiking trails such as Coffee Cove Hiking Trail.

For a quick leg stretch, check out Pisew Falls, where you can hear the roar of the water from the parking lot, and it is a quick jaunt on the boardwalk to two viewing platforms. Once you reach the falls, you can walk another 500m to a bridge to check out the nearby rapids.

You want to visit between July and November when thousands of polar bears migrate and make Churchill their summer home. Churchill can only be visited by train, but the scenery is breathtaking to watch all the natural wildlife and take in the boreal terrain of the sub-arctic wilderness.

8. Prince Edward Island Coastal Drives – Prince Edward Island

The beautiful province of Prince Edward Island offers road trip views of farmland, churches, fishing communities, and iconic landmarks on all three amazing coastal road trip options. Each road trip features unique cities and boardwalk areas to explore.

North Cape Coastal features 350 kilometers of breathtaking views and is inspired by the arts as homes are made from bottles and are very decorative.

The region has a deep Acadian history, so you can learn more about the Acadian culture through their food and music while smelling the fresh salt air and enjoying fresh Malpeque oysters at one of the many restaurants.

Central Coastal is 253 kilometers and is best known for being home to Anne of Green Gables and having beautiful red cliffs and white sand beaches.

The Central Coastal Drive begins at the Confederation Bridge and takes you to Chelton Beach, where you can enjoy a swim. Along the drive, you will pass rich farmland and gorgeous lighthouses on your way to Anne at Green Gables Heritage Place or continue on to explore the historic buildings in Charlottetown.

If you enjoy spending time at the beach then check out the Points East Coastal drive that passes by over 50 different beaches on the coastline. This route is 475 kilometers and explores the famous red cliffs of PEI, fishing communities, beaches, and harbors. Discover small-town culture by visiting local restaurants and artisan shops.

9. Badlands Parkway – Saskatchewan

Time to Explore: 1 day

Explore the pristinely preserved grasslands in Grasslands National Park, which have been divided into two sections, East and West. In the West, you can visit the Frenchman River Valley and, if you are lucky, see one of many endangered species, while the East is an area rich in fossils. Stop at the visitor center in Val Marie and decide if you want to road trip the East or the West.

The West section is an 80 km loop where you will likely see prairie dogs, burrowing owls, wild bison, old ranching sites, as well as cool archaeological sites. In the East, is a much shorter 11km route that is one of the most scenic drives in Canada that will take you through the richest fossil sites for finding dinosaur fossils.

Pro Tip: These routes are only available during daylight hours and are very remote, so come prepared with food and water and fill up your tank before you arrive.

10. Viking Trail and Gros Morne National Park – Newfoundland

Time to Explore: 1-2 days

Newfoundland is the most easterly province, and while it is small in size, it is actually quite vast! Newfoundland is known as the “Rock” for its mountains, beautiful scenery, breathtaking outdoors, and unique Canadian wildlife, all of which can be viewed as you drive the Viking Trail.

The Viking Trail runs along the northern peninsula of Newfoundland and can be driven in 5 hours. However, taking at least a day to explore is a much better experience rather than rushing the road trip.

The Viking trail should be on your bucket list as this road trip will take you through scenic coastline communities, historical sites, St. Anthony’s and L’anse aux Meadows, and majestic Gros Morne.

St. Anthony’s is a small community located in Iceberg Alley, as you can see multiple icebergs off the coastline even in the summer months. Kids will love seeing icebergs up close by boat or kayak and learning more about the Canadian arctic. If you’re lucky, you may even see some whales and seabirds.

L’anse aux Meadows is home to the Vikings and is the only confirmed place of Norse settlement in North America. Kids will enjoy checking out the replica Viking Boat, 3D Viking camp model, dressing up as Vikings, and listening to stories about Norse characters like Thor and Noki.

Gros Morne is the second largest national park in all of Atlantic Canada and is full of beautiful wildlife, including bears, foxes, moose, and caribou. The park has several hiking trails to meet the experience levels of all hikers.

For beginners and families, the Southeast Brook Falls trail uses built stairs to take you to a beautiful waterfall. At the same time, more experienced hikers may enjoy the uphill climb of over 800 meters on the Gros Marine Mountain.

Tobermory, Ontario

Distance from Toronto ~ 273 KM via Highway 10 and Highway 6 N (3 hours and 22 minutes)

Bruce Peninsula park is located on the traditional lands of the Saugeen Ojibway Nation in Tobermory, so the land is rich in history and offers a naturally beautiful environment to explore.

Tobermory has multiple beautiful beaches, and a popular attraction called the Grotto that takes you through ancient cedars and a limestone cave that leads you to the beautiful beaches that have turquoise waters to swim.

Nearby is the Fathom Five National Marine Park, which has 24 historical shipwrecks that can only be viewed by scuba diving or taking a glass bottom boat tour.

Don’t miss out on taking the ferry and exploring Flowerpot Island, a natural sea stack in the shape of a rock pillar. While on the island you can explore caves, hiking trails, and a historic lighthouse.

Point Pelee Island, Ontario

Distance from Toronto ~ 350 KM via 403 West and 401 West (3 hours and 30 minutes)

Pelee Island is a great location for adventure while enjoying beautiful surroundings. To access Pelee Island, you will have to first drive to Leamington and then catch a ferry to Pelee Island, which takes about 90 minutes. Distance From Toronto To New York 

The shortest distance from Toronto to New York by car is 497 miles (798 km). There are two different routes, but they are quite similar and only 10 minutes difference in length of time.

You can either take the I-86 E or the I-90 E for the majority of the drive, depending on which side of upstate New York you want to drive through. The best route for fun kids activities we find is the I-90 E – though you could take one route there and the other back.

Whenever you take a road trip from Toronto, you will want to leave early in the morning to avoid the traffic. You will drive on the Queen Elizabeth Way first around Lake Ontario, and then you will take Highway 420 to the Rainbow International Bridge. 

The border crossing can be busy depending on the time of year you are traveling, so plan for about an hour at the Canada/United States border. Once you’re in the United States, the fastest way is on the I-90 East, so to break it up we would plan to make a few stops along the way for bathroom breaks, snacks, and some sightseeing.

Pro Tip: Ensure you have all your travel documents, including passports and have the locations of your accommodations, as often the border agent will ask where you are staying.

Choosing when to take a road trip from Toronto to New York City can be challenging as every season offers something different in New York City. New York City is beautiful year-round and offers so many unique things to do, so there is never really a bad time to road trip between the two major North American hub cities.

New York State is famous for many lakes, rivers, parks, landmarks, and forests, all of which you want nice weather to explore. The most popular time of year is definitely the summer months, from June until September when temperatures are humid, and there are lots of crowds.

Summer also offers an opportunity to capture some of the beautiful sunflower farms in Upstate New York.

However, the spring months offer temperatures in the mid-20s (over 70ºF), and more than likely the weather will be sunny, allowing you to truly explore along the way with fewer crowds.

Lastly, New York is magical in the winter time right around Christmas as you can see the huge Christmas Tree at Rockefeller Centre, take a horse-drawn carriage through the inter wonderland of Central Park or take in a local light show. If you choose to visit in the winter, you will need to be prepared that many stops and attractions are seasonal and may not be open.

Weather between Toronto and New York can also be very harsh in the winter with lots of snow, so you will need to be prepared for hazardous weather and road conditions. Personally, we would not drive without snow tires.

The following are the best places to visit during a road trip from the urban hub of Toronto to lively New York City.

1. Niagara Falls

Undoubtedly the best thing to see and experience between Toronto and Canada is Niagara Falls.

You can discover and explore any of the three falls: Horseshoe Falls (located in Canada), American Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls, both located on the American side, which all come together to form the famous landmark of Niagara Falls! 

Enjoy the beautiful views that Niagara has to offer by enjoying a boat tour that takes you up close to both sets of falls. You can take a boat from the Canadian side with Maid of the Mist (American side) or Niagara City tours (Canadian side). Both boat tours give you an up-close tour of the thundering waters that form this famous natural beauty.

Buffalo, New York

Buffalo is the second most populous location in New York State. One of our favorite places to stop and visit whenever we are in Buffalo is Walden Galleria Mall, which is home to 200 stores, and 8 full restaurants. 

Walden Galleria offers a variety of entertainment options, including arcade games at Dave and Busters, a one-of-a-kind story-driven experience at 5 Wits Adventure Entertainment, cinema, escape room, and Billy Beez indoor playground.

If you prefer an outdoor adventure, then stop at the “Grand Canyon of the East” known at Letchworth State Park. The Genesee River flows over three different waterfalls high above the lush forest floor, and you are sure to enjoy those waterfall views, and many other scenic spots as the park has over 66 miles of hiking trails.

If you don’t like hiking, then you may enjoy the nature programs, biking, kayaking, or whitewater rafting opportunities offered inside this state park, one of the top nature spots in New York.

Rochester 

Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge

Stretch your legs and view a haven for natural wildlife species from New York state. The refuge has a variety of habitats, including wetland, grassland, and forest that are perfect for waterfowl and local birds such as raptors, warblers, woodpeckers, and more! 

Montezuma offers a 3-mile auto-drive tour with designated stopping points that are perfect to view wildlife and take photographs. The Wildlife Refuge is also a great place to stop for a picnic lunch or get some exercise on the Seneca Trail, which takes about 20 minutes to complete.

Greek Peak Mountain Resort

This mountain resort is located in the beautiful Finger Lakes Region in Upstate New York and is the perfect halfway point for families as it is located approximately four hours from Toronto and New York City. There’s no wonder why this is one of the most popular family lake vacation destinations in the northeast.

Greek Peak offers a ski and tubing hill in the winter with nine lanes of tubing and fifty-one ski runs. In the summer, it transforms into an outdoor playground for families and offers exhilarating family attractions like a mountain roller coaster, zipline, mountain biking, and aerial courses.

You may choose to simply stay overnight, or maybe you will spend a day and enjoy the Cascades Indoor Waterpark, which is 84 degrees all year long and offers a wave pool and a variety of water slides for kids of all ages. 

Kids will also want to stop at the Bearfoot Den, which is a kids’ zone offering crafts, games, and toys for kids to enjoy. The Den is open every weekend from Friday to Sunday and also offers other family activities like hiking, biking, and yoga for overnight guests.

Taking the I-86 E route further to the west, you could make your penultimate stop at Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom. Families of all ages will enjoy Dorney Park, which features more than 60 rides, shows, and attractions, including a waterpark.

Dorney Park is one of the largest waterparks in the North East that you don’t want to miss visiting. The amusement park is perfect for families with small children as it has over 15 rides in Planet Snoopy that even the youngest kids can ride and enjoy!

The Planet Snoopy area has lots of family amenities: nursing rooms, diaper changing areas, as well as a sensory and calming room. The waterpark is one of the best in the state as it has two tubing rivers, multiple wave pools, and twenty-six drenching waterslides – well worth the small detour!

New York Zipline

If you are looking for thrills, don’t forget to stop at Hunter Mountain to visit one of the highest and longest ziplines in North America. Experience the amazing views of the countryside as you are over 3200 ft above sea level on this scenic skyride, on the best things to do with active and adventurous kids.

From peak to peak, this zipline is 4.6 miles and can hit speeds up to 50 miles per hour. Participants must be over 10 years old and complete the Zipline Pilot training school before ziplining, so the whole tour lasts three to four hours.

An alternate family-friendly option is the Mid Mountain Tour which takes families on six shorter ziplines, multiple rope bridges, a rappel, and nine tree platforms. The tour takes 3 hours, and participants will be attached by a harness.

• Drive the Speed Limit: Make sure you don’t speed on your road trip as there are tons of state troopers everywhere, and they are always looking for speeders.
• Check road conditions in New York State before you set out using 511ny.org
• To save on fuel costs, try to make it to the United States before your first gas fill up, as gas is often cheaper in the United States versus Canada.
• Luckily, power sockets are the same in the US and Canada so no need to pack any adapters, but you will need to change currency from Canadian Dollar to US Dollar.

• Distance: 162 km 
• Time Needed: 2 hours to drive, a full day to explore 

The scenic drive along Ontario’s Bruce Peninsula from Collingwood to Tobermory offers panoramic views of the sparkling waters of Georgian Bay as you start your drive. Highway 6 connects Collingwood to Tobermory, which is a small town at the tip of the Bruce Peninsula.

The Highway 6 corridor offers you scenic views of the Bruce Peninsula and Huron Shores. This stretch offers lots of activities along the way, as there are multiple beautiful beaches, local restaurants and breweries, and a variety of hiking trails along the route. 

Before you reach Tobermory, you will want to stop at the Grotto located at Bruce Peninsula National Park, which is a popular attraction to thousands of visitors yearly.

The Grotto is a hiking trail through intricate limestone caves that eventually lead you to beautiful turquoise waters that you can swim in. As you hike, you will encounter wetlands, cliff edges, huge ancient cedars, caves, and local flowers like orchids and ferns. 

Tobermory is unique and special as it acts as a gateway to Manitoulin Island and Flowerpot Island. If you are visiting Tobermory, you want to make sure you stop and visit the interesting historical shipwrecks at Fathom Five National Marine park either by scuba diving or on a glass-bottom boat tour.  

The traditional land is home to the Saugeen Ojibway Nation and is famous for its picturesque blue waters that are part of the Great Lakes and are home to over 24 shipwrecks.

Once you are in Tobermory, make sure you find a restaurant that offers all-you-can-eat fish and chips as you won’t be disappointed, and if you have any room after, then stop at the local sweet shop. 

While you are in the area, make sure you take a ferry and go and explore Flowerpot Island, one of Canada’s most unique natural attractions. Flowerpot Island is a creation of natural sea stacks that are in the shape of a rock pillar. The Island also offers a fun adventure for explorers as they can visit caves, a historic light station, and hiking trails. 

When to go: Summer is the best time to explore the Bruce Peninsula, as although it can be busy with tourists, this is when the water is the warmest to swim. We recommend this drive during Spring or Summer as many businesses are seasonal. 

2.  Niagara Falls to Niagara on the Lake on the Niagara Parkway 

• Distance: 55km 
• Time Needed: 30 minutes to drive, 4 hours to explore 

The Niagara Parkway drives alongside the Niagara River, offering views of the rushing waters, gorgeous countryside, world-class wineries, picnic spots, gardens, hiking trails, waterfalls, and a variety of attractions.

Former British Prime Minister Sir William Churchill coined this route the “prettiest drive for a Sunday afternoon” as it offers beautiful scenery and a chance to relax. 

While you are in Niagara Falls, you will want to stop and visit Horseshoe Falls, which is the largest of the three waterfalls that form Niagara Falls along the Canada- United States border.

As you drive along the Niagara River, there are many beautiful gardens that offer blossoms in spring and spring, so be sure to stop and “smell the roses” or visit the Niagara Floral Clock.

If you are visiting in the winter, you will want to check out the Winter Festival of Lights, which is famous for its millions of lights. In addition to viewing foliage in gardens, you may choose to explore one of the amazing hiking routes along the Niagara Gorge. 

Niagara Falls is home to many popular tourist attractions like the Butterfly Conservatory, Bird Kingdom, Whirlpool Rapids, Hornblower Cruises, and the Table Rock Restaurant, where you can dine and overlook the falls. The kids will want to explore Clifton Hill entertainment district that offers arcades, bowling, indoor waterparks, and much more! Parents may also choose to take their chances and visit the nearby Casino to try their luck! 

You will want to take Niagara Stone Road on your way to historic Niagara on the Lake as it offers countryside views and a plethora of local wineries to stop and enjoy as there are over 20 wineries in the area. Once you reach Niagara on the Lake, you will want to explore the local boutiques, restaurants, historic hotels, and world-class theater performances. 

When to go: Year Round – Every season offers an entirely new experience! 

Pro Tip: If you decide to stay overnight in Niagara Falls, search for deals, as there often are package deals for hotels, restaurants, and attractions, which could save you some money. Parking in Niagara Falls can also be expensive, so look for a hotel that allows you to walk to most attractions. 

3.  Northern Ontario – Sault Ste Marie to Thunder Bay 

• Distance: 700 Km 
• Time Needed: 8 hours to drive, multiple days to explore 

The drive from Sault Ste Marie to Thunder Bay has tons of family-friendly activities, and Northern Ontario is incredibly scenic, so take a road trip and enjoy all the stops along the way.

As it is about an 8-hour drive between the two destinations, you may choose to break the drive into two days and stop halfway or even spend up to a week exploring, as there is so much to do.

The entire route takes place on the Trans Canada Highway (Highway 17), which is known as a bear country, so keep your eyes on the lookout! 

This Northern Ontario route has a variety of longer stops for hikes, as well as shorter fun roadside stops. This route is great for outdoor enthusiasts that want to explore the natural beauty of Ontario. 

One stop you don’t want to miss out on is the beautiful cascading Chippewa Falls, which are almost 25 ft high. They can easily be seen from the highway and are known as a  popular rest stop as it is the halfway point on the Trans Canada Highway. Be sure to walk across the bridge for a better bridge, or if the water is low, you can walk up either side of the falls to the top. 

If you are looking for a day at the beach, then make a stop at Batchewana Bay Provincial Park, which has many amenities, including a picnic area, children’s playground,  and visitor’s center.

Pancake Bay is known for being perfect for families as the water is very warm and the water is shallow for young children. Just down the street is Voyageur’s Lodge and Cookhouse if you’re looking for accommodations, a restaurant, snacks, or alcohol.  

Pancake Bay is another popular park that offers biking, swimming, hiking, boating, and wildlife viewing. If you enjoy hikes, head to the Lookout Point Trail, which takes you through a forested path to a viewing platform that lets you see Lake Superior.  

Agawa Pictographs is a must-stop along the Northern route, as it has 35 pictographs to view and is the largest collection in Ontario, and is one of the only collections you can view by foot. This trail is not great for very little kids as you must walk along the rock face to view the pictographs. Make sure the weather is dry if you are taking the trail, as it can be very slippery when wet! 

If you’re looking for a quick roadside stop, then find the Winnie the Pooh statue in White River that marks the birthplace of the real bear that inspired the Winnie the Pooh stories. Be sure to check out the visitor center to see more memorabilia and history.  

Wawa is the largest town along the route from Sault Ste Marie to Thunder Bay and is home to a large Canada Goose sculpture that offers a great photo spot. Wawa means Goose in Ojibway and thus why Wawa is home to not one but three large goose sculptures. Wawa is the perfect stop for an overnight stay, gas, or snacks for the rest of the trip. 

When to go: Due to the variable weather on the Trans-Canada highway, the best time of year to go is in the summertime when the roads are dry, and you can enjoy the multiple provincial parks along the route. 

Pro Tip: Fill up at any gas station you see, as they are located far apart, and you don’t want to end up in a remote area of Northern Ontario without gas. Also, wildlife is very active near roadways, so make sure you are aware of your surroundings when driving near dawn or dusk.  

4.  Gananoque and the Thousand Islands  

• Distance: 157 km 
• Time Needed: 1.5 hours to drive, 1 day to explore 

Enjoy the unforgettable journey along the Thousand Island Parkway and enjoy the panoramic view of the natural landscape and features that the 1000 Islands region offers, whether you enjoy adventures on the water or on the land. This route offers activities such as cycling, camping, hiking, and boating.  

Start in Gananoque, known as the Gateway to the 1000 Islands, and be sure to stop at Panache Bakery to grab lunch for the road. After you have grabbed a snack, then take a short drive to Gray Beach to enjoy your picnic lunch. This spot offers picnic tables, a gazebo shelter, and a panoramic view of the water.  

Another interesting stop along this scenic drive is Landon Bay, which is a lush forested area that offers five different casual hiking trails that are each unique. The Easy Trail is perfect for beginners and offers views of St. Lawrence, while the Donevan Trail has a mythical stone archway to start the trail and beautiful flowers to view. This stop is a hidden gem if you enjoy hiking, exploring the natural environment, and or enjoying lookout points. 

The 1000 Island tower is a unique tourist attraction that will allow tourists to view the whole South Eastern Ontario area. The tower has three different observation desks and offers views of the 1000 Islands and the St.Lawrence River, allowing you to see picturesque views of the 1000 Islands. 

One last stop you don’t want to miss is the Palaces And Palisades Cruise, which is a fun two-hour sightseeing tour. Along the cruise route, you get to enjoy the St.Lawrence River as you head towards the 1000 Islands Bridge, and you can view Boldt Castle and luxurious cottages known as Millionaire Row. From beginning to end, you can enjoy the fresh air through your hair and spectacular views. 

When to go: Summertime is the most popular time to visit due to the warm weather; however, the fall can be nice as it is not as busy with tourists, but still beautiful weather. 

5. Algonquin Park along Highway 60 

• Distance: 60km 
• Time Needed: 4 hours 

Algonquin Park is one of the most popular campgrounds in all of Ontario, especially for naturalists looking to explore nature and wildlife. Highway 60 runs right through Algonquin Park, which is located in Huntsville, Ontario, and is a famous destination around the world.

Highway 60 is the perfect destination for a scenic drive as you can view spectacular scenery and a variety of trees, and if you’re lucky, you may see some wildlife, including wolves, moose, and bears. 

The Highway 60 corridor is one of the best Ontario drives as you have a high likelihood of seeing wildlife in this natural playground of rocky ridges, lakes, and dense forest areas. This scenic drive offers breathtaking wilderness and offers Canadians an accessible outdoor adventure that would be perfect for a weekend trip.

Algonquin Park is home to over 30 species that you are likely to see along your drive, including bears, deer, moose, loons, beavers, turtles, and many more local animals in Ontario. 

Highway 60 connects the East and the West Gate entrances of Algonquin Park, making it super convenient to stop and stay a night in the campground, enjoy an afternoon at the beach or simply enjoy learning more at the Visitor Centre. Highway 60 runs from Huntsville to Renfrew while passing through the largest provincial park of Algonquin. 

When to go: Spring is the best time to visit as the area is quieter than in the summer. Spring is often a busy season for animals as they are mating, so you are more likely to see moose likely to come out to the roadways as they are attracted to the leftover salt from the winter. Pro Tip: Be prepared that while most of this route is paved and smooth that some roads that are off the main corridor are indeed dirt roads.
