• Make sure your vehicle is in good condition before starting your trip, and perform regular checks during the journey, including tire pressure, wipers, and windshield wiper fluid.
• Carry an emergency kit with items like flashlights, blankets, food, and water.
• Be aware of the size of the tank you are driving and fill up when you can as sometimes gas stations can become far and few in between.
• There are some toll roads in Canada, so carefully plan your route if you don’t want any hidden surprises.
• Seatbelts are required for all passengers, and Canada has very strict car seat laws for children. 
• There are no border crossing points between provinces, just signs that state you have entered a new province.
• If you are driving an RV or a slower vehicle, try to leave the left lane open for passing.

How Long is the Drive From Glacier National Park to Banff?  

If you’re looking to drive straight to Banff from Glacier National Park without really stopping, your three routes will take just over four hours on Route 2 (AB-2), just under 5 hours on Route 22, and closer to 6 hours on Route 93 & 95. 

Keep in mind that you will be crossing the Canadian border on this trip. Wait times and border control will definitely tack on more time to your trip, no matter which routes you take.  

Let’s be honest here, doing this Glacier National Park to Banff road trip is all about enjoying the ride. So instead of rushing to get there, you could make the trip over a number of days. Even up to a week or 10 days.

Best Time of Year to Drive Glacier National Park to Banff 

Both Glacier National Park and Banff are open year-round. So you could make this epic road trip at any time, but when travelling between the late fall and early spring, you’re likely to find parts of the parks and major roadways closed.

That’s why the best time of year to drive to Banff from Glacier National Park is during the summer months. Between late June and early September, you’ll have the best chance for warm weather, open roads, and gorgeous scenery.

You’ll be starting off your Glacier National Park to Banff road trip in one of the most beautiful places in North America. Known as the Crown of the Continent, you’ll be in awe of the park’s alpine meadows, valleys, mountain lakes, and of course, glaciers.

The drive between the two parks is only about 50 miles. Take Montana Highway 89N to 17N, then in Canada, follow AB 6 North to AB 5 West. Be prepared to cross the Canadian border at Chief Mountain.

Together, Waterton Lakes and Glacier form the impressive International Peace Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Make sure to visit the Peace Park Plaza for gorgeous views and reflect on the park’s goal of peace and goodwill between the two nations of North America.

Kootenay National Park, CA

If you prefer a quieter city, you will want to visit in the fall when the weather is cooler, and there are fewer tourists. The major park in the city, Stanley Park, offers beautiful fall scenery which is perfect for walking the seawall and enjoying the totems.

Vancouver International Airport is located 12 kilometres (7.5 miles) south of downtown in Richmond, British Columbia. The airport is connected to the Downtown core by a series of bridges and tunnels and is about a 30-45 minute drive depending on traffic. 

Several transportation options from YVR to Downtown include rental cars, public buses, and taxis.

We recommend taking the Canada Line of the Skytrain unless you are renting a car, as it is convenient and affordable and can get you downtown in about 35 minutes without the hassle or traffic.

If you are just visiting the Downtown Area for a day, we would skip the rental car and stay in the city center so you are close to all the attractions. Transportation options in metro Vancouver are simple and easy to use if you need to go further than walking distance.

Peace Arch Park, BC/WA

Explore the rich history of Canada and the United States as the Peace Arch Park allows guests to truly understand the peaceful relationship between the two countries. Popular attractions for kids include the Space Needle, which is 605 feet tall and offers an elevator ride to an observation deck that allows 360-degree views of Seattle, Mount Rainier, Puget Sound, and the Olympic and Cascade Mountains. If you’re hungry, stop at the Space Needle Restaurant, which rotates every 45 minutes to give you different views throughout your meal. Lastly, kids will enjoy learning more about the Space Needle through interactive displays and exhibits.

Pike Place Market is a historic farmers market that has existed since 1907 and offers a wide variety of produce, seafood, crafts, and local handmade goods that are perfect for souvenirs. Willapa National Wildlife Refuge

Visitors will enjoy viewing the diverse range of habitats, including tidal marshes, sand dunes, and old forests that are home to over 250 species of migrating birds, fish, and numerous animals, including bears, otters, and Elk. Kids will enjoy learning more about the history, ecology, and wildlife through educational programs and exhibits in the visitor center.

Located in Washington State, the goal of this wildlife refuge is to conserve habitats for the species located in the park. Willapa National Wildlife Refuge is over 16,000 acres in size and offers visitors a variety of recreation opportunities. While visiting the Wildlife Refuge you can enjoy wildlife sightings, bird watching, hiking, or fishing while enjoying the natural beauty of the area.

The Willapa National Wildlife Refuge property has several cultural and historic sites, including a World War II-era radar station and a historic lighthouse that dates back to 1858. Guided tours of the lighthouse are available during the summer months.

Redwood National & State Parks, OR, WA

This is a must-see destination for nature lovers or those looking to enjoy the peaceful, quiet environment of the iconic redwood forest, home to some of the world’s tallest trees. Redwood National & State Parks is located on the north coast of California, has trees as large as 380 feet tall, and covers an area of almost 140,000 acres.

Visitors to the park will enjoy viewing wildlife, hiking through the forest, camping, and fishing.  Kids will enjoy checking out the Junior Ranger programs, campfire talks, and guided hikes offered by the visitor center. 

You will not want to miss checking out the narrow canyon with walls covered in ferns called Fern Canyon or visiting the largest redwoods in the park in the Lady Bird Johnson Grove.
