The state of South Carolina has 21 scenic byways spanning more than 450 miles, established by the South Carolina Scenic Highways Committee. These scenic drives will allow its visitors to see the beauty, scenery, and history that the state of South Carolina is made up of.

As you travel through these scenic byways, you will come across many significant attractions and experiences along the way, including major lakes, national forests, mountainscapes, historical sites, and more.

In today’s road trip guide, we will explore seven of the 21 scenic byways in South Carolina that, in our opinion, are can’t-miss experiences in the state.

Our guide will provide you with everything you need to know about making these scenic drives, from the best routes to take, popular stops and attractions along the way, and any tips and tricks that may help you in your travels.

1. Cowpens National Battlefield Scenic Byway

• Distance: 9 miles
• Time Needed: 1 day

If you’re a history buff, this scenic drive is a can’t-miss one for you. It is just a short stretch of 9 miles that you could embark on on any day. This route starts at the Town of Cowpens and travels for 9 miles until it ultimately connects to the Cherokee Foothills National Scenic Byway.

The biggest significance of this byway is that it will take you to the Cowpens National Battlefield, a part of the National Park Service. This battlefield is the site of the Battle of Cowpens in the year 1781 during the Revolutionary War.

When you visit the site, you can learn all about the history of the battle, how General Daniel Morgan’s victory over the British during the American Revolution, and learn how it has evolved through the years.

If you want to expand your trip, you can continue your travels through the Cherokee Foothills National Scenic Byway.

When to go: This drive is so interesting and is such a cool piece of history, particularly if you are from or interested in the state of South Carolina. You can enjoy this drive and experience at any time during the year.

2. Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway

• Distance: 112 miles
• Time Needed: 1-2 days

The Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway was established as a scenic byway in 1998 by the South Carolina Department of Transportation. This byway will have you starting at the Georgia/South Carolina border, and you will travel through the state until you end your travels in Gaffney.

If you’re driving straight through this byway can be driven in a few hours, but we recommend taking at least 1-2 days to explore the area and enjoy the sights and attractions along the way. Some of the most popular stops along the way include Lower Whitewater Falls, the highest set of falls in eastern North America, Devils Fork State Park, and Caesar’s Head State Park.

As you complete your travels, you will end your drive in Gaffney, South Carolina. In Gaffney, there are a number of attractions to enjoy, including the “Yellow Mall,” a premium shopping outlet, The Michael Gaffney Cabin, a replica of the cabin where the founder of the city resided, and the Kings Mountain National Park.

When to go: There is no particular season that the Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway is more desirable than the other.  If you are making plans to take this drive, don’t let the time of year or season stop you.

3. Savannah River Scenic Byway

• Distance: 110 miles
• Time Needed: 1-2 days

The Savannah River Scenic Byway begins in Clarks Hill, South Carolina, and heads north until you reach Oakway. The byway was officially established in 1998 and has been a route for travelers to enjoy ever since.

At the very start of this scenic drive, you will get the chance to enjoy a number of fun activities and experiences in Clarks Hill. In Clarks Hill is Thurmond Lake, where visitors can enjoy water activities such as swimming, boating, fishing, and more.

As you continue to travel you will encounter other notable sites and attractions, including Sumter National Forest, Hickory Knob State Resort Park, Calhoun Falls State Park and campgrounds, and the Jim Rampey Recreation Area.

Once you reach Oakway, you can enjoy a variety of fun activities, such as golf courses, marinas, playgrounds, picnic areas, and more. Oakway is a great spot to enjoy some fun activities for the whole family.

When to go: In order to fully enjoy the experiences available along this scenic drive, we recommend visiting during the warmest months of the year, typically June through August.

4. Ashley River Road Scenic Byway

• Distance: 12 miles
• Time Needed: 1 day

Established in the year 2000, the Ashley River Road Scenic Byway is a short 12-mile stretch along the Ashley River. This road is the oldest known road still in use in the state of South Carolina and is a highly significant piece of history.

Although it is a short stretch, it is not due to a lack of significance. This scenic drive begins near the city of Charleston, and there are a number of significant pieces of history along the route.

As you travel, there are a number of attractions to stop and see along the way, including the Old St. Andrew’s Church, the oldest structure used for worship south of Virginia, Fort Bull, Drayton Hall, a former rice plantation where enslaved workers were working daily, and Middleton Place, another historic plantation dating back to colonial times. The site features a museum dedicated to the original house, working stable yards, and enslaved quarters.

When to go: The drive along Ashley River Road is beautiful, and because it is such a short and sweet drive, it is a great way to enjoy the day at any time during the year.

5. Hilton Head Island Scenic Byway

• Distance: 22 miles
• Time Needed: 1 day

The Hilton Head Island Scenic Byway is a multi-lane highway that travels through Beaufort County and will ultimately lead you to Sea Pines Circle and Hilton Head Island. This is another short drive that will lead you to the paradise that is Hilton Head Island.

The main draw of Hilton Head Island is typically its ending destination, but the view along the drive is worth taking in itself, in our opinion. Along this 22-mile stretch, you will pass through wetlands, and historic villages, including Bluffton, and finally, you will cross the causeway onto Hilton Head Island and trust us when we say you will not want to miss that view as you make the cross-over.

While the drive can be done quickly, we recommend planning for at least a few days once you reach Hilton Head Island. The island is known for its beautiful beaches, golf courses, water sports, shopping, and incredible dining establishments such as Lulu Kitchen,  The Crazy Crab, and Johnson Creek Tavern.

When to go: The weather in the area is quite enjoyable all year round, but to fully enjoy the beaches and water on the island, we recommend visiting during the summer months.

6. Bohicket Road Scenic Highway

• Distance: 10 miles
• Time Needed: 1 day

The Bohicket Road Scenic Highway is located in lower Charleston County on Johns Island near Bohicket Creek. The byway and island are home to many historical and agricultural sites that are worth seeing during your drive.

One can’t-miss site during this drive includes the viewing of Angel Oak, a grand southern live oak that is over 500 years old and makes for one of the best spots for an epic photo op in the area. Your drive will offer beautiful sights and foliage that make for a peaceful and relaxing drive for any day.

When to go: This short drive is beautiful at any time of the year, but the sights are particularly beautiful during the Fall months when the leaves have changed from green to beautiful, warm fall colors.

7. Edisto Island National Scenic Byway

• Distance: 17 miles
• Time Needed: 1-2 days

The Edisto Island National Scenic Byway was established in 2009 by the South Carolina Department of Transportation and made for a great scenic drive if you are traveling through the state of South Carolina.

The scenic byway is known for being a drive that offers the beauty of nature, including waterways, foliage, and more. The drive begins at the McKinley Washington Jr. Bridge and continues on until travelers reach Edisto Beach Pavilion along the Atlantic Ocean.

While the drive itself is quite short, be sure to plan for some time to make stops along the way and enjoy at least one relaxing day on Edisto Island.

Points of interest in the area include the starting point, Dawhoo Bridge, also known as the McKinley Washington Jr Bridge, and the Edisto Island Museum. The museum features exhibits that show the history of the island, including Slavery and Freedom and Native American culture.

When to go: This drive is excellent at any time of the year, but we have found it to be particularly beautiful during the Spring and Summer months.

Have you and your family dreamed about taking an East Coast road trip, but it hasn’t been possible until now?  

The journey from New York to Florida is filled with fascinating stops along the way, where people of all ages can find something to enjoy. In addition, cities like Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Petersburg, Virginia, hold many cultural, natural, and historical wonders. 

Florida also offers a delightful mix of entertainment, national and state parks, and pristine family beaches.  

It’s time to pull out your calendar app or planner, as we’ll walk you through how to plan your road trip from New York to Orlando, complete with the best attractions and stopping points along your route for this epic US road trip route.  

Distance From NYC to Orlando   

The shortest distance from New York City to Orlando, Florida, is 1,077 miles, and you make the drive straight through in about 16 hours. So with stops, it’s possible to drive from New York to Orlando in two days (depending on your children, of course!).  

You’ll spend most of your East Coast road trip on I-95 S if you avoid stopping along the way, but we encourage you to make plenty of stops to make the most of your journey to the southeast.  

Stopping regularly along your route allows you and your fellow travelers to go sightseeing, stretch your legs, and avoid too many rounds of “Are we there yet?” We think it’s a winning scenario for everyone! 

How Long Do I Need Driving From NYC To Orlando, Florida?  

You can easily customize your road trip from NYC to Orlando to fit your schedule and allowable days. Take a few weeks to stop along all of the recommended places, or only stop once or twice along the route and spend the bulk of your time in Florida.  

As we mentioned, driving direct in one hit will take about 16 hours – a tough call for any driver to stay awake this long – so we suggest breaking the journey up with several interesting city stops along the way.

2-3 weeks would be an ideal amount of time, splitting your time between NYC, the middle of the route, and key points in Florida to experience everything on offer.

To help you plot out your route, here are some helpful driving distances between key destinations on the east coast where you could reasonably break up your journey. We’ve also included how long you’ll need to add further destinations in Florida, beyond Orlando:

Best Time Of Year To Drive From NYC To Florida 

The weather in Florida is warm year-round due to its subtropical climate. Summer highs range from 75 to 90 degrees. January is the coldest month, but it still averages 74 degrees!  

Winters in New York are another story, so we recommend driving from New York to Florida in the winter, spring, or early summer. You can escape the frigid NYC temperatures, the bulk of the tourist season, and the worst of the summer heat.  

If you do decide to travel during the summer, aim for June. The summer solstice occurs in the third week of June. This means the days will be longer, and you can fit activities – or lounging around – into each of them!  

We will warn you that Florida’s hurricane season is from June to November and peaks from late August to October. You can still visit during this time, but you will likely experience a more humid climate and extra rain showers.  

Our best recommendation for family road trippers traveling to Florida during hurricane season is to keep well-informed. Hurricanes generally don’t just pop up “out of the blue,” so you should be able to get advance warning of whether or not you’ll need to evacuate your location.  

Best Stops On An NYC To Florida Road Trip 

There are so many breathtaking places to see along your road trip from NYC to Florida. New York City itself is a treasure trove of museums, sightseeing opportunities, and must-try restaurants. In addition, the east coast offers countless beaches, million-dollar views, and numerous other roadside stops.  

Then there’s Florida itself – a paradise for nature lovers and those who are just looking for some rest and relaxation in the sun. Of course, you could easily spend most of your days in Orlando, especially if Disney World is your end destination. But we’ll leave that up to you!

Before you begin your drive from New York to Florida, we recommend spending a few nights in New York City. You can spend as much or as little time in the Big Apple as you’d like. This, of course, depends on your finances and the number/ages of your travelers.  

If you’re planning on staying a few nights in the city, we have a few family-friendly hotel options to suggest. The Belvedere Hotel is one of the most affordable and is close to Times Square, Broadway, and many restaurants. The New Yorker by Wyndham is another option with friendly staff and bicycle rentals nearby.  

You could easily spend a month exploring NYC, as it’s such a vast and fascinating city! However, we suggest choosing a few more popular sightseeing opportunities for your brief stay instead of cramming too much into each day.  

A brief NYC itinerary you could take a stroll through Central Park, marvel at the wonders of the Natural History Museum, or enjoy a Broadway show. Of course, visiting the Empire State Building in Midtown Manhattan is a must, and everyone needs a ferry boat ride from Battery Park to the Statue of Liberty.

Now its time to grab your wheels as we hit the road heading south on the I-95 for our east coast road trip adventure!

NB – if you’re flying in and starting your east coast trip from NYC, don’t grab your rental car until you’re ready to head south! Use public transport, taxis or ride-share apps to get around in NYC

Washington, D.C. (2 nights)  

Distance from NYC to Washington, DC: 4 hours/229 miles 

Your first stop after New York City is Washington, DC, and there are so many exciting places for families to explore. Kids will love the Smithsonian National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute, and Beauvoir Outdoors Playground is an excellent area for young children to burn off some pent-up energy.  

There are many museums to explore as well, such as the International Spy Museum. This museum is filled with special spy equipment, and your kids can learn all about the fascinating spies throughout history. There are also special programs for kids under 10, where they can complete their own secret mission!  

We can’t leave out favorites like the National Museum of American History and the United States Botanic Garden. And, of course, glimpsing the White House and the US Capitol are in amongst the best things to do in D.C.! We recommend making a list with your kids and letting each person choose their favorite – this may help narrow down your options.  

Hotel stays in DC are a little on the expensive side, but we’ve found that the Embassy Suites by Hilton, Hampton Inn, and Holiday Inn are more reasonably priced chain options in good locations.

For restaurants, you must try 2 Amys if you’re craving a slice of authentic Neopolitan pizza. Are your kids up for catching grilled pieces of steak with their mouths? Then Sakura Japanese Steak Seafood House may be just the ticket.  

With a longer itinerary you could also squeeze in a stop for a night or two in Philadelphia -packed full of history and plenty of free attractions, Independence Hall and seeing the Liberty Bell are a right of must for any American child!

Petersburg, VA (1 night)  

Distance from Washington, DC to Petersburg, VA: 2 hours 15minutes/229 miles 

The shorter drive from Washington, DC, to Petersburg gives you a bit of a breather towards the middle of your New York to Florida drive. This also allows you to spend a bit more time in the area, as there are many fun family activities to experience! 

Petersburg is just an hour’s drive from Colonial Williamsburg, one of the most fascinating historical attractions in the United States. However, deciding where to go in Williamsburg can be overwhelming, so we suggest choosing an interest-based itinerary on their website, such as “family fun” or “first-timers.”  

Check out the Petersburg National Battlefield Park if you’d like to stay closer to Petersburg. This historical site marks where the Siege of Petersburg took place, and the area has many well-maintained trails to explore. If you’re traveling by car, there’s also a 33-mile scenic driving tour in Virginia where you can visit 13 different historical sites.  

History lovers will also love Petersburg’s National Museum of the Civil War, a 25,000 square feet facility known as one of the best Civil War Museums in the United States. Filled with interactive exhibits, it’s a great place where visitors can learn what life was like for a Civil War soldier.  

If time in your itinerary allows, you could add an overnight stop in North Carolina too. Rayleigh is a great family-friendly city stop, or try Fayetteville, we love the fascinating Airborne and Special Operations Museum, or stroll the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks. Beach lovers could take the scenic route and add a night or two in Wilmington or Myrtle Beach if you take the coastal road route through the Carolinas

Charleston, SC (3 nights)  

Distance from Petersburg, VA to Charleston, SC: 6 hours/402 miles 

Charleston is up next on our New York to Florida road trip itinerary, and we couldn’t be more excited. It’s a beautiful city with a treasure trove of cultural, historical, and natural sites to get out and explore.  

Extend your road trip through South Carolina with these ideas

Children of all ages will love the South Carolina Aquarium, which allows visitors to get up close and personal with thousands of creatures. You could easily spend a full day enjoying hundreds of species of birds, sharks, turtles, and alligators.

There are also several educational programs, and children can feel different sea animals in the Touch Tank and even feed stingrays! Families with young children should also check out the Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry, which is essentially a giant interactive playground!  

If you’re searching for outdoor activities, visiting the Angel Oak on John’s Island is a must. This magical-looking tree is over 400 years old and is the largest living organism east of the Mississippi River. It’s truly a sight to behold.

History buffs will love Magnolia Plantation and Gardens, one of America’s oldest and most eye-catching public gardens. There’s even a petting zoo and Nature Train!  

Another itinerary option to add here is an overnight stay or rest stop in Savannah, Georgia

Jacksonville, FL (2 nights)  

Distance from Charleston, SC to Jacksonville, FL: 3 hours 40 minutes/238 miles 

Congratulate yourselves! You’ve made it from New York to the state of Florida –  not an easy thing to do with kids! Spend the first night in Jacksonville, a fun city with tons of water activities, shopping options, and outdoor entertainment.  

Your children will definitely want to cool off in the water, and Jacksonville has 22 miles of beaches, rivers, and the Intracoastal Waterway.

Spend a few hours fishing and swimming at Jacksonville Beach, or take the whole family to the Adventure Landing Waterpark. Most areas are pet-friendly and have fresh seafood restaurants and local boutiques nearby.  

Jacksonville has several other fun family attractions besides its beaches and water parks. It also has several top museums, art, history, and cultural tours, and more. If you’re feeling adventurous, head to Autobahn Indoor Speedway & Events, where you can drive high-speed Go Karts and even try axe throwing!  

Jacksonville also has many family-friendly restaurants, such as the Bearded Pig. This mouthwatering BBQ joint offers an extensive kid-friendly menu while the adults get to savor their own selection. There’s also Clark’s Fish Camp, which houses America’s largest private taxidermy collection and a tank full of live alligators!  

Take your time heading down the Florida coast; Amelia Island is another favorite first-stop in Florida, and a stop in at the historic city of St. Augustine is a must!

Orlando, FL (3-4 nights)  

Distance from Jacksonville, FL to Orlando, FL: 2 hours, 14 minutes/140 miles 

If Orlando is your final destination, congrats! If not, keep right on exploring. It’s wise to spend at least three days in Orlando, as many family-friendly activities are available. This is also the final leg of your trip before returning home, so you want to make the most of it!  

Without a doubt, the largest family attractions in Orlando are the giant theme parks Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando. You could easily spend your entire time at one or the other, especially with all the shows, events, and rides on offer. Of course, this entirely depends on your preferences, finances, and patience!  

Sea Life Orlando Aquarium is also a popular family-friendly activity in Orlando with youngsters. You could also spend a few hours with crocodiles and alligators at Gatorland, where the largest collection of white leucistic alligators live. There’s also a zipline, aviary, and petting zoo on the grounds, so it’s perfect for kids of all ages.  

Another must-see attraction is Madame Tussauds Wax Museum, a tourist favorite. Take selfies next to your favorite wax personality, and you can enjoy the entire experience in about an hour. After a long day of sightseeing, cool off in the tranquil blue waters of Kelly Park. It’s a popular place to camp, swim, or go inner tubing.  

Accommodation options in Orlando are almost endless! For a longer stay your could try a VRBO property in Orlando, whilst for short theme park visits, it can make sense financially to bundle your accommodation and tickets and stay at an on-site hotel.

Do be aware of exorbitant parking costs in Orlando, everywhere! If you are tackling this road trip as a one way journey, ditch the car once you get to Orlando; you’ll find using shuttles or ride share like Uber or Lyft cheaper than daily rental + parking fees.

1. Miami to Key West Overseas Highway (Highway 1), Florida 

Taking you all the way from Miami to Key West through over-the-ocean bridges that connect the Keys, this mesmerizing highway is one of the most classic southern states road trips and a favorite for those who love sunny days and endless beaches. 

It goes without saying that the scenery along its 113 miles is as spectacular as it gets. Each and every mile, you’ll be treated to beautiful ocean views and white sand beaches as you make your way to Key West. 

While the trip can be completed in less than a day, it’s recommended to spend several days on this trip as there are plenty of incredible destinations worth making a stop at to explore. Top highlights include Key Largo, Islamorada, Bahia Honda State Park, and the underwater John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. 

The best time of the year to do this southern states road trip is between March and May when hurricane season is over and the winter crowds have tapered off. 

2. Skyline Drive, Virginia 

Starting in Richmond, the Skyline Drive will have you seeing some of the best the state of Virginia has to offer as you make your way to the heart of the Appalachian Mountains.  

Even though this road is only 105 miles long, it can very well be turned into a multi-day southern road trip as there are plenty of stops worth making along the way for hiking aficionados. 

The drive will take you along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains inside Shenandoah National Park. All along the highway, you’ll find plenty of trailheads to park your car and go for a hike, as well as several campsites for those who want to spend the night inside the park.  

The best time to do the Skyline Drive is September through November, when the park gets wrapped up in gorgeous fall foliage. 

3. Chipley to Rainbow Springs State Park, Florida 

If you’re up for a few days spent chasing waterfalls, this southern states road trip through Florida is guaranteed to please. 

Starting in Chipley Falling Waters State Park, you’ll make your way all the way to Rainbow Springs State Park. Along the route, you’ll get to see the highest waterfalls in Florida, gaze at plenty of natural sinkholes, and spend a few hours exploring Torreya State Park.

Moreover, you’ll also get the option to stop at plenty of other parks such as the Big Shoals State Park and Devil’s Millhopper Geological State Park, where you’ll be able to see a series of waterfalls crashing down into a sinkhole that contains an actual mini rainforest!  

This road trip can be done any time of the year but keep in mind that the summer months are usually the warmest and wettest. With that said, summers are when the waterfalls look the most impressive due to the rain, so take your pick! 

4. Pineywoods Autumn Trail, Texas 

Vineyards, fairytale-like forests, and autumn colors are the staples of the Pineywood Autumn Trail in Texas. 

While it’s much lesser known than other southern states road trip routes, this 145-mile loop between Palestine and Athens will have you passing plenty of forests and parks worth making a stop at to take a walk and truly take in the golden and crimson tones. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also fly above the fall foliage at Texas ZipLine Adventures! 

As if that weren’t enough, Pineywood is also dotted by tons of idyllic lakes and vineyards. This route includes the Tara Vineyard & Winery for those keen to get a taste of Texas’s hidden wine country, but if you still haven’t gotten your fill of grapes, you can continue the road trip onwards over the Piney Woods Wine Trail, which is dotted by over 20 wineries.  

Autumn is definitely the best time to do this road trip, especially considering it’s a mecca for fall hues. If you’re unable to do it at this time of the year, spring is another great choice for mild weather and colorful blooms. 

5. Tuscaloosa to Eutaw, Alabama 

If you love all things vintage, artsy vibes, places that feel as local as they get, and historical architecture, this Alabama scenic road trip is everything you’ve been looking for. 

As you make your way from Tuscaloosa to Eutaw in West Alameda, you’ll pass plenty of antique shops, art galleries galore, and a plethora of antebellum mansions, not to mention you’ll also get the chance to make a few detours. 

A few highlights of this road trip include the Courthouse Square in Eutaw, the lakes that surround the town of Livingston, and getting to drive over the Alamuchee-Bellamy Covered Bridge, a wooden bridge that is said to be haunted by an outlaw who was hanged there! 

Spring and fall are the best time of the year to do this road trip as the weather is mild and comfortable. Summers are also pleasant for warm-weather lovers, although this is the high season in Alabama and cities like Tuscaloosa can get pretty crowded. 

6. Haunted Oklahoma, Oklahoma 

Love all things haunted? If you consider yourself a bit of a daredevil, this deep south road trip is definitely one to remember!  

This sensational road trip travels through some of Oklahoma’s most haunted cities, including Tulsa, Ponca City, Alva, and El Reno before looping its way back to Oklahoma City. 

All of these spots are great to spend the night in, but the main reason to visit them is to check out a few of its most haunted buildings. Highlights in Tulsa include the Gandini’s Circus in Edmond, an abandoned carnival, the Hex House, and Cain’s Ballroom.

In Ponca City, visit the Constantine Theater & Poncan Theater, which are said to be incredibly haunted and don’t forget to check out the Cherokee Strip Museum in Alva, which is believed to be extremely ghost-ridden. 

The best time to do this Oklahoma road trip is from late March to early June and September to November when the weather is temperate. Bonus points if you do it in late October for Halloween! 

7. Outer Banks Scenic Byway, North Carolina 

Starting in Nags Head, this scenic byway runs all the way to Ocracoke Island and back to the mainland (yes, a ferry journey is included here!). 

As one of the most iconic routes in North Carolina, this road trip in the southern US is a great addition to your bucket list, taking you through one of the most popular vacation destinations on the US east coast. 

Along the way, you’ll get to visit Bodie Island, Cape Hatteras, and if you like hiking, you can also spend a few hours exploring the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. Ocracoke Island is another must-do stop for beautiful beaches, and if you’re feeling up for a day trip, you can hire a boat to the alluring Portsmouth Island.  

The best time of the year to do this road trip is between April to mid-June and early September to late October. 

8. Haunted Louisiana, Louisiana 

Another of the best southern USA road trips for those who love all things spooky, this incredible route will have you checking out some of the most beautiful (and haunted) sites in a state that is already infamous for its paranormal activity. 

The route begins in Keachi and ends in Fort Proctor, following mostly the I-49. Along the way, you’ll get to make stops at deserted schools, sugar plantations, and plenty of mills. There’s even an abandoned Six Flax on the way – it’s illegal to enter the premises, but even the sight from the road is enough to send chills down your spine! 

Must-do stops include Laurel Valley Sugar Plantation, Fort Proctor, Elise Reuss Memorial School, Charles Boldt Paper Mill, Kisatchie High School, and Keachi Women’s College.  

Louisiana is best visited between mid-February to early May and from October to December for mild weather. This road trip is a great idea for a Halloween adventure, or you can combine it with a Mardi Gras trip in February instead! 

9. Tennessee Waterfalls Road Trip, Tennessee 

If you love nature and all things waterfalls, the Tennessee Waterfalls route is one of the best southern road trips to take for outdoor adventures. 

This gorgeous drive will show you some of the best the Great Smoky Mountains have to offer. The drive starts at Cumming Falls on the Blackburn Fork State Scenic River, where you can freshen up and swim before continuing to Burgess Falls to check out four different waterfalls. 

Next, you can make a stop at Falls Creek Falls and finish up the trip at Twin Falls to end the trip with a bang!

10. Hilton Head to Charleston, South Carolina 

Starting on Hilton Head, an island just off the coast of South Carolina, this epic road trip will have you seeing the absolute best the Palmetto State has to offer. 

The drive is technically only 90 miles long, but there are plenty of wonderful spots to overnight in if you have the time. As you make your way to Charleston, you’ll get the chance to enjoy plenty of coastal scenery and small-town charm.

Stops worth making include Hunting Island State Park for secluded beaches, Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge for wildlife spotting, and Beaufort for antebellum mansions. 

Summer is the best time to do this road trip for perfect beach weather. 

11. Midland Trail, West Virginia 

Gorgeous nature, charming historical towns, local art, pioneer history, pretty waterfalls, and plenty of mystery are just a few of the aspects that make this deep south USA road trip a true gem. 

Covering over 100 miles between Charleston and Sam Black Church in West Virginia, this scenic byway crosses some of the most rugged areas of the Mountain State. The road is believed to have been originally carved out into the mountains by buffalo and native tribes of the area. 

Some of the top highlights to check out for nature include Hawks Nest State Park and New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, while historical sites that are musts include The Ruffner Log Cabin, Salt Village, Old Stone House, and the colonial town of Lewisburg. 

Fall is a great time to do this road trip for beautiful autumn colors, but spring and late summer are perfect for comfortable weather. 

12. The Blues Highway, Tennessee and Mississippi 

Along this epic road trip, you’ll get to visit some of the places where rock and roll, rhythm and blues, jazz, and country music were born, inspired by the melodies of the cotton fields of the Mississippi Delta. 

The Blues Highway follows Route 61 between Memphis and Vicksburg, taking you right into the heart of American Music.

The United States has over 420 beautiful and historic national park sites covering almost every state and territory. The crown jewel are the the country’s 63 designated national parks – offering visitors natural beauty with stunning scenery, unique wildlife, and plenty of adventure activities.

The best part about them? You don’t need an appointment! Most national parks welcome walk-in visitors (well, mostly drive-in visitors), and many of the east coast national parks of the United States are amazingly free to enter!

National parks are a natural compliment to a family road trip across the United States. So whether you want to explore the beauty of nature or enjoy outdoor recreation, let’s see what’s in store at each of these national parks so you can plot out your next east coast family road trip.

Plot Your Road Trip Route for East Coast National Parks

Before we dive in, don’t forget to check if any of your family are eligible for a 4th Grader Pass – this is an ideal time to take on a family road trip to any of these incredible US National Parks – for free!

Acadia National Park, Maine

Acadia National Park is located in Maine and protects the coastal region of Mount Desert Island. The park has many family-friendly hiking trails, including Acadia Mountain Trail, which takes you to a peak above the ocean. The park also has many scenic drives, including Schooner Head Loop Road and Cadillac Mountain Drive.

Families with children of all ages can enjoy activities such as swimming, boating, fishing, golfing, kayaking, bird watching, camping, horseback riding, hiking, snowmobiling, and ice skating at the park campgrounds or lodges.

The best time to visit the Acadia National Park is from April through October when camping is also possible, though many of the scenic roads and picnic grounds remain open year-round.

The easiest way to get there is taking I 95 North from Boston to Bar Harbor. If you want to avoid parking problems, order an Uber or other online car services. It is recommended that visitors bring warm clothing during the winter season.

Acadia National Park Entrance Fee: The admission fee is $30 per vehicle, $25 for motorcycles and $15 for cyclists and pedestrians.

Note timed entry permits are needed for Cadillac Mountain Drive over the busiest months of summer and fall.

Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Ohio

Cuyahoga Valley National Park is among America’s smallest but most beautiful parks. The park stretches across various regions, including Cleveland, Akron, and surrounding areas. The 33,000 acre park includes several lakes, miles of water trails, and hundreds of roads parallel with the Ohio River.

Once of the most scenic driving routes in the state of Ohio, some of the highlights of this incredible place include the Great Cedar Swamp Nature Preserve, the Akron Canal Trail, the National Road, the Horseshoe Bend Trail, the Rocky River Greenway, the John Hay Memorial Carriage House & Museum, and the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad.

Once you’re out of the car, the park offers visitors a variety of outdoor recreational opportunities such as walking, bicycling, boating, and horseback riding.

There are two ways to enter the park, by using the Ohio Turnpike or the I-271 northbound out of downtown Cleveland.

Top tip: If planning a family trip during the spring and summer months, be sure to bring mosquito repellent because there are many mosquitoes here!

When visiting Cuyahoga Valley, be sure to visit the park’s visitor center located at 575 W. Pioneer Ave. in downtown Norwalk. Here, you can learn about all the different activities offered within the park. The visitor center also provides maps to help you navigate your way around the park.

Note that camping an overnight RV Parking used to be allowed in this east coast national park but this is no longer permitted.

Cuyahoga Valley National Park Entrance Fee: Entrance fees are free for day visitors.

Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

Situated at the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia is the scenic Shenandoah National Park. It is renowned for its spectacular views of the Appalachian Mountains, wildlife, historical sites, hiking, biking, canoeing, camping, fishing, and swimming.

There is so much to see here! Highlights include the Skyline Drive, the Luray Caverns, Big Meadows, Natural Bridge, and Rockfish Gap. Visitors can experience this park’s natural beauty and history by visiting the visitor center, museum, nature center, and trails.

Eight campsites accommodate up to 25 people each. In addition to these campsites, two group shelters are located near the Big South Fork River. These shelters have cooking facilities, restrooms, showers, tables, benches, fireplaces, grills, and electric service.

Some of the recreational activities that families, small and large groups can participate in include bird watching, hiking, mountain biking, picnicking, and rock climbing.

The famous Blue Ridge Parkway passes through this park. It connects many scenic attractions such as Harpers Ferry, Front Royal, Rockfish Gap, Mount Rogers, and the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. If you plan to go hiking, biking, boating, or horseback riding, be sure to stop and hike along the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Shenandoah National Park Entrance Fee: The admission fee is $30 per vehicle, $25 for motorcycles and $15 for cyclists and pedestrians.

New River Gorge National Park, West Virginia

New River Gorge National Park & Preserve is one of the country’s largest national parks covering about 1.4 million acres. It’s the third-largest National Park in the US. – and the newest!

Previous a designated National River, it was redesignated to national parks status in 2020.

The park is home to scenic gorges, including the New River Gorge, the Little Kanawha River Gorge, and the Tug Fork Gorge.

New River Gorge is also known for its beautiful scenery, lush forests, and cliffs. Some of the plants and animals in the area include salamanders, bats, butterflies, American robin, otter, woodpecker, chipmunk, wild turkey, elk, whitetail deer, and more.

Filled with over 50 miles of hiking trails, the park is also a popular rock climbing area with over 1400 established rock climbs. It is also a premier white water rafting location on the east coast – home to several Class III to Class V rapids!

You can plan a scenic road trip to this popular east coast national park at any time of year, however, the best season is from May through October – the shoulder seasons being less crowded than the summer.

Highway access to the park is from Route 19, between Beckley and Hico, and from I-64, between Mossy and Sandstone.

There are no designated drive up campgrounds in this national park but the adventurous might be able to sling on a backpack and make use of the backcountry campsites for a unique nature experience.

New River Gorge National Park Entrance Fee: There is no fee to enter this national park. Recreation activities with licensed operators will cost extra.

Mammoth Cave National Park, Kentucky

The Mammoth Cave National Park was established in 1925, and it’s among the oldest parks in the U.S. Situated near Jackson, Kentucky, this park covers about 740 square miles and was also designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981.

With over 400 miles of excavated caves, you can be fairly sure what the main activity is to enjoy in this popular east coast national park!

The park also has several natural features like springs, waterfalls, lakes, streams, and ponds. Mammoth Cave National Park is home to more than 50 bird species, including the bald eagle, osprey, blue heron, black hawk, white ibis, brown pelican, and great egret.

You can visit the park any time of year, though the shoulder seasons in Spring and Fall are considered best for fewer crowds and milder weather. The summer is the busiest, but you may be surprised that the caves maintain a consistent and chilly 54°F year-round.

The park is located near to Interstate 65. To get from north to south inside the park, the best way is to take the Green River Ferry, adding an element of fun to this incredible scenic journey through Kentucky.

Mammoth Cave National Park Entrance Fee: Entry to Mammoth Cave National Park and its surface features is free of charge. However, there is a fee to tour the cave, stay in campgrounds, or reserve picnic shelters. Cave fees range from $8 through to $66 depending on length and complexity of the tour.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee & North Carolina

The beautiful Great Smoky Mountains National Park, established in 1934, is situated in the eastern portion of North Carolina and Tennessee. The park covers 522,419 acres of land and hosts about 500 different plant and animal species.

This incredible national park is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a UNESCO Biosphere reserve.

One of the best national parks for hikers, visitors will find many trails throughout the park. The Appalachian Trail, which runs along the border of Georgia and North Carolina, is the longest in the United States.

Aside from hiking the trails, the park offers plenty of recreational activities, including biking, camping, golfing, horseback riding, rafting, boating, hunting, fishing, and wildlife viewing.

In addition to these, numerous festivals and special events are held within this vast east coast national park. These include arts and crafts fairs, concerts, and outdoor movies.

Getting into the park there are three main entrances, from Gatlinburg and Townsend in Tennessee and Cherokee, North Carolina. You will find numerous scenic driving routes through the Smoky Mountains.

Once inside the national park, visitors can use bike rentals, electric carts, horses, motor vehicles, and their own two feet. The park also has a fleet of buses throughout its various attractions and destinations. Some shuttles service the different lodges and cabins inside the park.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park Entrance Fee: No entrance fees for this fabulous east coast national park (though from March 2024 they are introducing a parking tag system)

Congaree National Park, South Carolina

Congaree National Park is found in South Carolina, about 60 miles southwest of Columbia.

This small but important east coast national park consists of rivers, swamps, and giant pine forests. It is home to the largest tract of old growth bottomland hardwood forest in the USA, making it one of the more unique national parks on the east coast.

Also a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the Congaree River that flows through the park has tributaries including Black Creek, Little Congaree Creek, and Middle Creek. The largest lake in the Park is Lake Wateree.

The park features more than 2200 species of plants and animals making it a nature lovers paradise; some of these include bald eagles, white-tailed deer, black bears, bobcats, foxes, coyotes, opossums, herons, egrets, geese, turtles, snakes, and salamanders.

The Congaree National Park is a great spot for camping, swimming, bird watching, day hikes, kayaking, canoeing, and mountain biking. With the kids, we’d suggest you tackle the boardwalk trail and grab a canoe or kayak on Cedar Creek to enjoy the best of the park up close.

The park has two entrances. The first is at the western end, where the river crosses. The second is at the eastern end, where the road leads to the visitor center.

Open year-round, the best time to visit is the late spring, and early summer as summers can be quite humid. Fall can also be pretty, but you can hit hurricane season. Winter can result in many trails being flooded out.

Congaree National Park Entrance Fee: Entry is free to this national park. Additional activities such as kayak hire or camping will have extra fees.

Biscayne National Park, Florida

Biscayne National Park, home to coral reefs and mangrove forests, is located on Florida’s south coast between Miami and Key Biscayne.

This unique national park, which is more than 95% water, has a great range of recreational opportunities available including snorkeling, diving, canoeing, sailing, scuba diving, wildlife viewing, hiking, bicycling, boating, windsurfing, and parasailing.

The park was established in 1970 and covers approximately 5,500 acres along the north side of the Delaware Water Gap. This protected land includes woodlands, meadows, wetlands, streams, ponds, and other habitats.

The Biscayne National Park Institute offers guided boat tours and nature programs.

You can visit the park year-round, with the best time to visit falling in Florida’s dry season from late November through to April.

To get to Biscayne National Park, you will need to drive down US1 South towards Key Biscayne. Turn right into S.W. 8th Street when you reach the causeway and follow it until you see the park sign.

The Homestead National Parks Trolley runs every weekend from November through April. It drops visitors off at the Dante Fascell Visitor Center and the Homestead Bayfront Marina.

Biscayne National Park Entrance Fee: This east coast national park has no entrance fees, however there is $25 fee for each overnight stay at Elliott Key or Boca Chita Key. Fees are waived May 1 to 30 September.

Everglades National Park, Florida

Everglades National Park is among the most visited national parks in Florida. It is not only considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site but also a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Located on land covering approximately 3,500 square miles in southern Florida, Everglades National park is home to many birds, fish, reptiles, mammals, plants, and insects.

The park consists of three distinct regions: the mangrove forests, coastal prairie, and freshwater wetlands. The park’s main attraction is the vast network of waterways called the “River of Grass.” This river comprises five interconnected rivers that flow from Lake Okeechobee to Mexico.

Some animals found here include American alligators, raccoons, otters, turtles, herons, eagles, owls, snakes, frogs, butterflies, and other migratory birds.

The park also offers a variety of recreational opportunities including camping, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, scuba diving, snorkeling, swimming, and wildlife viewing.

With over 200 miles of paved roads, visitors can choose between exploring the park on foot, bicycle, boat, car, tram tour, or ATV. You can also take advantage of guided tours and special events hosted by the park staff.

The park is perhaps most famous for it’s airboat rides which can be enjoyed (at an additional charge) with one of the parks authorized operators that you’ll find along the Tamiami Trail, between Miami and Shark Valley.

Best enjoyed during the dry season – roughly November to May are the best time to explore the Everglades, one of our favorite winter national parks!

Dry Tortugas National Park, Florida

Situated nearly 70 miles west of Key West, Florida, Dry Tortugas National Park was established by Congress on March 3, 1898. This park covers 1,852 acres and has also been designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

One of the most remote of the US National Parks, Dry Tortugas, as you might expect, has a huge variety of natural habitats, including mangroves, coral reefs, salt marshes, grasslands, beaches, and marine life.

Some popular marine spotting here include endangered sea turtles, loggerhead sea turtles, gray nurse shark, brown pelican, roseate spoonbill, osprey, and American alligators.

This park also offers many water-based recreational activities including diving, snorkeling, surfing, kayaking, parasailing, sailing, fishing, scuba diving, shelling, and hunting.

Dry Tortugas has a fascinating history in addition to its natural beauty. It was once home to an extensive collection of Spanish treasures and artefacts brought here in the late 16th century. Today, visitors can visit Fort Jefferson and explore the fort’s underground tunnels.

To get to Dry Tortugas, you will need to head by to the very tip of the Florida Keys. You then take a ferry from Key West which takes around 2 hours each way, or a seaplane. Stay for the day or the adventurous might like to try the primitive camp sites

Dry Tortugas National Park Entrance Fee: $15 per person (under 16’s free); when travelling by ferry entrance is included in your ferry ticket.

Fitting it all in – East Coast National Park Road Trip

A road trip from Acadia National Park in Maine all the way to Dry Tortugas National Park in Florida adds up to an incredible 5,140 miles of driving (+ a ferry ride!).

Unless you have many weeks to spend, it’s not the easiest road trip to tackle in one go (with kids at least!) We’d suggest breaking this journey down into smaller sections to tackle as independent road trips.
