2. Yosemite National Park, California

Death Valley National Park

Despite its somewhat desolate title, Death Valley National Park is actually home to a ton of lively scenery.

Picture massive salt flats lining the horizon, rock formations that look straight out of this world, colorful mountains dotting the roads, and a wide array of historical and desert goodness and you’ve got yourself a pretty good picture of what a visit to this gem of a national park is like.

Because Death Valley National Park is deemed one of the hottest places in the entire world, visiting during the summer months isn’t exactly recommended for a great experience (we’re talking 120+ degree temperatures!).

Winters, though, bring in cooler temperatures ranging from the mid-60s to the low 70s. Combine that with sunny skies and you’ve got yourself a perfect winter escape in one of the most unique landscapes of California, and the USA!

Entrance fee: $30 per private vehicle, valid 7 days

Extend your journey from Death Valley through to Yosemite (some suggested seasonal stops won’t be possible in the winter!)

Arches National Park

Location: Utah

A fiery desert landscape may not be the first thing that pops to mind when you picture a winter trip, but the colder months just happen to be one of the best times of the year to pay Arches National Park a visit.

As its name may have clued you in, this beautiful national park in Utah is home to tons of natural archways (over two thousand of them!). Moreover, the park also boasts expansive mesas, otherworldly-looking rock formations that look as though they pierce the sky, and a vibrant red landscape that will make you feel as though you’re walking on Mars.

While temperatures do get chilly during the winter, it doesn’t really get cold enough to ruin the day. Moreover, Arches isn’t exactly popular during the winter months, making crowds at some of its most frequented spots almost non-existent (during summer, the crowds are so heavy a timed entry permit system has been introduced.

As if that weren’t reason enough to convince you to visit this epic national park during the winter months, the winter skies and dreamy snow-dusted La Sal Mountains in the distance make for truly magical sunrises and sunsets!

Set south of Miami, this park is so different from the rest because 95% of it is set under the water. This means you’ll definitely need to get wet in order to get to see everything, which you can do via a snorkeling or scuba diving adventure, depending on your preference.

Another way to explore for those who prefer not to swim is by booking a glass-bottom boat tour. This may not give you the chance to get super close to the marine life that calls Biscayne its home, but it’s guaranteed to provide some seriously epic encounters nonetheless.

Bryce Canyon National Park

Location: Utah

While scenic drives can be off the cards during winter, with the Park Loop Road usually closing from December 1 through until spring, winter hiking is a common activity, but make sure you bring the right gear.

Winter sports are another winter highlight in Acadia, with 45 miles of carriage roads for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing available. Snowmobiling is another top activity in Acadia, especially for those keen to experience the park’s scenic road from a totally different angle.

Moreover, birding in Acadia during the winter is top-notch, when leafless trees open up the forest for easy viewing. Some species you may see include snowy owls, black-capped chickadees, and Harlequin ducks.

Grand Canyon National Park

Saguaro National Park

Location: Arizona

Located less than an hour from Tucson, Arizona, Saguaro National Park still remains a bit of a hidden gem in the national parks system and a perfect go-to during the colder months!

This arid wonderland sits right in the heart of the Sonoran Desert, and its allure comes from the fact that it is home to the country’s largest cacti and saguaros, some of which can grow up to 60 feet tall!

During your visit, you can explore the park on foot by going on a hike (the Desert Discovery Nature Trail is a great way to learn about the flora in the area), taking a scenic drive amidst saguaros (the 8-mile Cactus Forest Loop Drive is a must!), or searching for ancient petroglyphs.

While snowstorms are not that common, they happen, so you may get lucky and see a scene of cacti coated in white snow! It’s certainly one of the more unique places to visit in Arizona.

Denali National Park

Location: Alaska

Alaska in winter?! If you don’t mind freezing temperatures, Denali National Park is a true treat during the winter months, even if snowfall actually starts as early as August!

Days are short in Denali during the winter, but that brings in opportunities to get glimpses of the northern lights, all while getting the landscape during the day pretty much all to yourself.

Moreover, if you happen to be visiting in February, you’ll be in for a real treat at the park’s annual Winterfest, where you’ll get to catch snow block sculpting competitions, guided walks, dog-sledding adventures, and so much more!

Note that once snow falls, the roads may frequently close at Mile 3, Park Headquarters. From late February/March ploughing begins and travelers may be able to make it as far as Mile 13, Mountain Vista Rest Area but it is weather dependent.

Other activities include camping, mountain biking, horseback riding, rock climbing, and backpacking during the warmer months. Come winter, the entire area becomes a mecca for snow fun, with activities like cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowboarding being favorites for visitors!

3. Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada

Distance from Las Vegas: 46 miles ~ via I-15 (50 minutes)

Taking you into a wonderland of red rock Aztec sandstone, ancient petroglyphs, petrified logs, and scenery that comes in all shades of oranges, reds, and pinks, a visit to Valley of Fire State Park will make you feel as though you’ve been transported right into the heart of Mars.

Hiking is the best way to fully get to know the park. Considering its somewhat gentle terrain, it makes for a perfect spot to get a taste of what hiking in the desert is like. Bryce Canyon is located four hours away from Las Vegas, which may sound like a bit of a stretch for a day trip. Still, if you’re willing to wake up early, a day trip from Vegas is very much doable thanks to the park’s tiny size!

Striking red rock hoodoos are the main thing to see at Bryce Canyon, and there’s no better way to cover as much ground as possible than by hiking the Queen’s Garden to Navajo Loop Trail. This hike will give you the chance to swerve your way through sheer rock tunnels, pine forests contrasted by red rocks, and finally, gawking at the views of the sandstone hoodoos that make Bryce Canyon the incredibly unique place it is!

If you’d rather explore from the comfort of your car, you can also drive the park’s scenic highway (Highway 12) to Rainbow Viewpoint and then make your way back slowly. This road cuts right through the park and offers visitors 13 different viewpoints of its main highlights!

Millions of years ago, harsh floods rushed into cracks of sandstone in the desert and Antelope Canyon was formed.

Even though the entire Southwest is made up of fascinating slot canyons, what makes Antelope Canyon so unique is the fact that its walls are plastered by swirls of desert colors that pop to life when light hits them.

The only way to explore the canyon is by hiking through it. You will be taken from the car parking entrance to the canyon entrance by four-wheel drive. Upper Antelope Canyon is a pretty easy trail that can take around two hours, considering you’ll be making multiple stops to take in the striking scenery!

If you have time, you can also check out the much lesser-visited adjoining Lower Antelope Canyon. This canyon is just as gorgeous, but it’s made up for much thinner passages, which makes hiking through it a bit tougher for those who are after a challenge!

Top Tip: You can only enter with an authorized Navajo guide. Tours can book out weeks in advance, so you need to be organized & traveling with small children check they have enough infant seats that day.

Entrance Fees for Antelope Canyon: This depends on the type of tour you’ve booked but expect to pay $50-$90 per adult, children discounted. The tour should include your $8 Navajo permit fee.

As you explore, you’ll stumble across some of the highest peaks in the country, get treated to views of hundreds of alpine lakes and streams, and get to walk over some of the dreamiest hiking trails in the world.

Even though fall does get a little chilly at Rocky Mountain National Park, it’s highly considered the best time of the year to visit for two reasons: One is that fall foliage covers the gorgeous Trail Ridge Road, which is one of the most scenic highways in the United States and seeing it blanketed by golden aspens is a scene unlike any other.

Secondly, fall brings in the elk rut, which is when elk arrive in the area for mating season. Not only will you be able to see hundreds of them up close, but you’ll also be able to attend the annual Elk Fest organized by the park to learn everything about these mountain-roaming creatures through music, live entertainment, storytelling, and interactive activities.

Entrance Fee: $30 per private vehicle, valid for one day, or $35 per vehicle, valid for seven days

2. Shenandoah National Park

Location: Virginia

Tucked away in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, Shenandoah National Park is a mecca for those looking for crisp mountain air and glorious fall foliage. Being only an hour from Washington, D.C., it’s no surprise it’s one of the most popular national parks on the East Coast!

Fall foliage in Shenandoah National Park usually begins in early October and lasts until mid-November, making the season quite long.

3. Acadia National Park

Location: Maine

Acadia National Park definitely takes the cake when it comes to quintessential fall destinations on the East Coast.

Even though Acadia is gorgeous year-round, there’s no better time to visit than the fall months, especially if vibrant autumn colors are what you’re after.

Home to a humongous offering of glorious natural landscapes ranging from woodlands to mountains, lakes, and dramatic coastlines, this is one of the best national parks to visit in the fall if you’re after picturesque views and a variety of recreational activities.

4. Arches National Park

Location: Utah

Perhaps a desert isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when you think of visiting national parks in the fall, but we absolutely had to include Arches National Park in the list because this time of the year is the best time to explore this gem in Utah.

Weather-wise, the temperatures in Arches start to drop in autumn, making it an ideal time for hiking and exploring.

5. Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Location: North Carolina and Tennessee

With so many species of trees within its boundaries, Great Smoky Mountains National Park is another wonderland to visit if you want to see fall tones. Seeing vibrant hues of yellows, oranges, and reds backdropped by snow-capped mountains is definitely something everyone should experience at least once in their lives!

Some of the best things to do in the Smokies to fully experience the season are hiking to see a few of the park’s waterfalls (they look absolutely stunning surrounded by autumn colors!), driving the scenic roads that traverse the park (Newfound Gap Road, Morton Overlook, and Clingman’s Dome Road are all amazing), and renting a cabin inside the park to enjoy your very own personal slice of fall in the park.

6. Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Location: Ohio

As the only national park in Ohio, Cuyahoga Valley is one of the best national parks to visit in the fall if you’d rather check out somewhere that’s not on everyone’s usual radar.

Here, you’ll enjoy crisp evenings and bright sunny days, making this time of year ideal for hiking and exploring (and you’ll find fewer bugs than in the summer!).

Fall foliage usually peaks around the third week of October, but you’ll be able to enjoy the colors pretty much all month, making it one of the prettiest scenic drives in Ohio.

One of the favorite ways for visitors to explore Cuyahoga is by hopping on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad Train, which, as its name may have clued you in, is a train that traverses the valley and provides some of the most beautiful views the entire park has to offer.

Another way to explore is to hike a few trails inside the park. There are over 120 miles of them on the menu. If you’re limited on time, we recommend focusing on the Brandywine Falls trail to see a 65-foot waterfall, the Virginia Kendall Ledges Trail to walk down sandstone rock “ledges,” and the Pine Grove Trail to see beautiful colors.

7. Mount Rainier National Park

Location: Washington

Boasting an active volcano and the most glaciated mountain in the continental United States, Mount Rainier is another wonderful option in PNW when choosing what national parks to visit in the fall.

Mount Rainier is special because it encompasses many different ecosystems, ranging from lowland forests to wetlands and alpine tundra. Moreover, there are 26 named glaciers here and over 1,000 species of plants and animals, many of which are incredibly endangered and have found a safe haven inside the park.

Once the fall season begins, Mount Rainier bursts into life with different activities. An easy day trip from Seattle, a must-do is going on a naturalist-guided walk to spot Roosevelt Elk during the breeding season in September. Other fun things to do during the autumn include going berry picking and mushroom foraging.

As for hiking, some of the best fall hikes to try include Reflection Lakes, The Morain Trail, Third Burroughs, and the Knapsack Pass. Horseback riding is also a wonderful way to explore the park.

Entrance Fee: $30 per private vehicle, valid for seven days

Seasonal Closures: The park is open year-round. However, it is recommended that visitors check road conditions before setting out. Many of the visitor centers and campgrounds close by mid-October.

Note that timed entry was introduced to Mount Rainier NP in 2024; summer special conditions for Sunrise Corridor and Paradise Corridor should be lifted by early September and should not impact your fall driving plans

8. Bryce Canyon National Park

Location: Utah

Bryce Canyon National Park is guaranteed to please if you’re more in the mood to escape fall altogether and experience an entirely different landscape.

This striking national park in Utah is famed for being home to the most extensive collection of hoodoos in the world, but due to its location in the desert, summers tend to get scorching hot and winters particularly cold, making fall an ideal time to visit for bearable temperatures.

While there aren’t any fall-themed activities during the season, fall offers a wonderful chance to explore some of Bryce Canyon’s most famous parts without the hordes of crowds, but before the frostiest days of winter.

9. Grand Canyon National Park

Location: Arizona

With the summer crowds dwindling at the beginning of September, fall is a beautiful time of the year to visit the United States’ most iconic national park.

Not only will you see one of the country’s most internationally recognized natural landscapes without so many people around, but fall means crisp air and much more comfortable temperatures for hiking.

Even though the Grand Canyon isn’t exactly a destination for foliage, if you want to add that to your itinerary, the North Rim section of the park has plenty of patches of golden aspens.

10. Glacier National Park

Location: Montana

Home to vast glaciers and over 1 million acres of striking scenery that bursts to life this time of the year with glorious hues of gold, visiting Glacier National Park during the fall is magical.

You’ll be treated to views of jagged peaks, mild meadows, and cascading waterfalls here. As if that weren’t enough, wildlife encounters are more common during the fall season when crowds are gone and temperatures are mild, so you’ll get to spot different species like bears, hawks, and golden eagles.

Fall foliage at Glacier National Park varies. On the park’s western side, trees start changing color around mid-September, while those on the east do so more towards the beginning of October.

Some of the best things to do at Glacier National Park during the fall include wildlife viewing, floating over the North and Middle Forks of the Flathead River when water is running slow, and driving the most scenic road in Montana, Going-to-the-Sun road.

Entrance Fee: $35 per private vehicle, valid seven days (Winter rate $25 from 1 November to 30 April)

Seasonal Closures: The park is open year-round. A timed entry system operates at Glacier National Park until September 8. Many parts of the park may be affected by road closures by late fall and campgrounds close for winter, so please time this into your fall road trip in Montana.

You can combine a trip to Glacier NP in the Fall with a drive into Canada through to beautiful Banff. This is the ideal way to combine some of the best of Canadian Fall colors in Alberta and stunning Kootenay National Park, B.C., too.

One of the best side trips you can take from Las Vegas is visiting the Grand Canyon; after all, it is one of the 7 natural wonders of the world, a national park, and a UNESCO World Heritage site – simply put, it is truly incredible and an unmissable experience.

But if time is limited and you are not visiting the Grand Canyon as part of a larger road trip through Arizona, you are probably asking yourself, should I visit the West Rim or the South Rim?

What’s the difference, you may ask? They are two entirely different sections of the greatest natural wonder in the United States. Both offer spectacular views of the canyon beneath, but some key differences exist.

• The south rim is located inside the Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona
• Grand Canyon West is on Hualapai Reservation in Mohave County, Arizona
• The closest entrance to Grand Canyon National Park is approximately 4 hours away from Las Vegas, whereas Grand Canyon West, you are looking a little over 2 hours away by road.

Now that you know the major difference, let’s compare the two in more detail so you can decide which might be the best experience for your family road trip.

Driving Distance To Grand Canyon From Las Vegas

The biggest factor to take into account is how much time you have available for your Grand Canyon experience.

A trip to Grand Canyon West from Las Vegas involves around 4 hours of drive time total (there and back), and with a stop of 2-3 hours at the key attractions, you can comfortably complete this journey within a half day. This will leave either your morning or afternoon free for other fun family activities in Las Vegas (we have plenty more of those ideas here!)

Top Tip: If you don’t want to be caught up with the tour bus groups, plan to be there right on opening time at the start of the day or 2 hours before sunset. The tour groups and greatest crowds are experienced in the middle of the day, and food choices out there are limited.

In contrast, Grand Canyon National Park is a 4-hour drive to the South Entrance. And then the queue to get in; frankly, if you’re not in that queue well before 9:00 am, or you’re prepared to time your entry until after 3:00 – 4:00 pm in the afternoon and drive back in the dark, it’s a MUCH taller challenge to fit in South Rim as a one day trip from Las Vegas.

Don’t get us wrong, if you’re an efficient traveler, it can be done in a day, but not comfortably (remember bathroom breaks, fuel stops, etc!), Allow at least 12 hours.

Grand Canyon Tour Or Taking Your Own Car

If you are looking to join a coach or small tour group option to the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas, you’ll undoubtedly find more options to Grand Canyon West.

Not all tours will make this clear when they advertise “day trip to the Grand Canyon”, so if it really means something to you to ‘tick off’ the national park, be conscious that this is NOT located at Grand Canyon West.

Taking a tour may cost you more per head but has the convenience of not needing to hire a car and drive; you need to way up your cost per person for a group vs. hiring a car and self-driving, plus fuel.

And, of course, tours come with the normal disclaimers; it may have bucket loads more convenience but you’ll spend many parts of your day shuffling along with a larger group to factor in and waiting on other people, having them in your pics, you know the drill!

Entrance Fee Grand Canyon South Rim Vs West Rim

When it comes to cost, there’s a hands-down winner here.

The Grand Canyon National Park incurs a $35 entry fee PER VEHICLE, valid 7 days. You can negate this if you already have an America the Beautiful pass or any other national park concessions such as Military of the 4th Grader Pass.

On the other hand, Grand Canyon West comes with a fairly hefty entry fee PER PERSON. It depends on the number of ‘experiences’ you want to enjoy, but you’ll be looking at starting prices of $49 per person, $66 per person including the famous ‘Sky Walk’.

So, the Grand Canyon National Park is undoubtedly cheaper for a family, but weigh this up with the extra fuel cost for traveling much farther.

Moving Around Inside West Rim vs South Rim Grand Canyon

Getting around inside Grand Canyon South Rim is easier to some extent (once you’re past the entry queue) because you can drive your car to each of the key attractions (albeit in peak seasons, there are several sections where you’ll need to use shuttles as main roads are closed to vehicular traffic).

In Grand Canyon West, you must park at the visitor center and use the internal shuttle bus between the key attractions, no exceptions. The wait for shuttle buses can be excruciatingly long in the heat but there’s no other way to get around.

Queues and Crowds

Let’s face it, visiting any natural wonder as spectacular as the Grand Canyon, you are realistically going to expect queues no matter which part you choose to visit. Visiting off peak season is the only way to avoid crowds at both, but not avoid them completely; this is not a hidden gem!

The Main Grand Canyon Attractions

This list is not limitless, but here are some of the key points of interest at each:

Grand Canyon South Rim

• Walk the Trail of Time
• Hire a bike or e-Bike to explore on two wheels
• Visit the Yavapai Museum of Geology
• Attend one of the ranger-led information sessions
• Take one of the hiking trails into the canyon (heed warnings about trail difficulty and conditions before you set out with the kids)
• Drive to the scenic viewpoints, including Desert View Watchtower

Grand Canyon West

• The Skywalk Bridge at Eagle Point- a glass walkway over the canyon (not going to lie, as spectacular as it might look, our team consensus is this is remarkably underwhelming)
• Guano Point – an abandoned mine on a small peninsula marks one of the best points for 360-degree views of the Grand Canyon.
• Additional add-on activities include a zipline, hike trails, and helicopter and pontoon tours.
• You can enjoy rafting on the Colorado River with Hualapai River Runners in a separate section of the Hualapai Reservation.

There’s no winner per se here; it’s up to you what you want from your Grand Canyon experience, you will get some epic photos at both, but a little more freedom in your exploration in the National Park.

Staying Near The Grand Canyon

If you want to turn it into an overnight trip, both Grand Canyon National Park and Grand Canyon West offer accommodation options for families; the former has more extensive facilities within the park.

Grand Canyon South Rim has multiple lodges and campsites to choose from, suiting different budgets, but you must pre-book these many months in advance. There are also several more RV parks and motel-style accommodations just outside of the south entrance in the town of Tusayan, or a little further away in Williams.

Near the West Rim, in contrast, there are two options near the entrance: an RV Park and basic cabins. A nearly 2 hour drive away is the Hualapai Lodge on Route 66.

Hands down, if you want an overnight trip of longer, you may as well travel as far as the National Park; staying nearby works well for beating the crowds if you rise early or stay until late.

Last Minute Planners

If you don’t like to lock in your itinerary until the last minute when you know what the weather is up to and how much free time you have, West Rim might be your better choice.

We’ve found even in the peak of summer, you could still get tickets via the Grand Canyon West website the night before.

Grand Canyon National Park, like many of the most popular national parks in the US, DOES need some pre-planning. You do not need a timed permit or entry slot (as of 2023!).

Factor in that it’s not just the 4-hour drive out to the Grand Canyon but queues and parking; it’s simply put, more of a mission if you’re traveling with kids (isn’t everything!) Not quite Disney level – but pre-planning, especially in peak school break periods, is a must, particularly if you want to stay in the national park.

Grand Canyon West is your preferred choice if you like to be spontaneous in your travel plans.

The Verdict – Which is Better Grand Canyon South vs Grand Canyon West

The Family Road Trip team has hotly debated this! We have all tried them both and taken them in as day trips from Las Vegas and separate longer road trips through Arizona and the mountain states. There is no overall winner as both have awesome and appealing factors, and it depends on your travel plans.

But, if we had to be pragmatic, as a day trip from Las Vegas, you can’t go wrong with visiting Grand Canyon West. You certainly will not be left short on wow factor (though your pocket and your patience may be left a little lighter).

If you truly want to experience the Grand Canyon, though, take a little longer and thoroughly experience the park on foot with more signage and insights into history, the South Rim is likely going to be your better choice.

A drive from Phoenix to San Diego will bring you through the rugged desert landscape of the southwest United States, as well as through numerous parks and unique historic destinations. 

If you’re wondering where to stop or what to do on a Phoenix to San Diego road trip, then you’ve come to the right place.

In this guide, we’ll go through the logistics of the drive as well as some of the top attractions along the way. Depending on how much time you have, it would be easy to turn a drive from Phoenix to San Diego into a weeklong adventure!

Distance from Phoenix to San Diego

The most direct route from Phoenix to San Diego is on the I-8, which is roughly 355 miles. You can also take the slightly longer I-10 route, which brings you closer to the Mexican border, in which case the distance from Phoenix to San Diego is about 440 miles.

How Long is the Drive from Phoenix to San Diego?

If you take the I-8 route driving from Phoenix to San Diego, the entire trip can be done in about 5 hours and 30 minutes if you don’t stop. Even though this is doable in a day, in order to enjoy the trip and make the most of the stops, it would be better to plan for at least 2-3 days of driving.

On the I-10 route, the drive is about 6 hours and 30 minutes without stops. Again, it would be well worth your time to split this drive into at least a few days, if not more, if you’re hoping to stop in Joshua Tree or Palm Springs on your Phoenix to San Diego road trip. 

Best Time of Year to Drive from Phoenix to San Diego

Spring and fall are the best times of year to make a Phoenix to San Diego drive. These are the seasons when you can both avoid the crowds of summer and holiday tourists and enjoy the best weather. 

Summers in Arizona and southern California are very hot, so although driving from Phoenix to San Diego in June or July is doable, you’ll definitely want to make sure you have good AC in your car. If you’re hoping to go hiking, the sweltering summer heat might ruin your plans. 

Winter weather tends to be rainier than other months, which can also make outdoor activities difficult to enjoy. Remember that no matter what time of year you decide to make a Phoenix to San Diego road trip, both cities are very popular places to visit, so it’s best to make reservations for accommodation and other activities well in advance.

Painted Rock Petroglyph Site

As you leave Phoenix and head west on I-8, after about 90 miles, you’ll come to the Painted Rock Petroglyph Site and Campground.

This incredible archeological site contains nearly 500 boulders with prehistoric petroglyphs on their surfaces. It’s estimated that these drawings are at least 1,400 years old, and they provide a unique perspective into the early civilizations in the United States. 

The site is a perfect spot to get out and walk around on one of the hiking trails after the first leg of your journey as you drive from Phoenix to San Diego. If you’re inclined to spend more time, there is an overnight campsite with picnic areas, grills, and campfire pits.

Dateland

You might have already guessed from the name, but Dateland is the United States’ top producer of dates! 

What began as a small town built along westbound railways, Dateland has turned into a popular tourist attraction thanks to the picturesque date palms and gardens.

Stop to grab lunch at the local café or food court in the travel center as you drive to San Diego from Phoenix. The gift shop sells a variety of date-inspired souvenirs, and at the bakery, you can select from an array of delicious treats featuring dates. 

To beat the heat of hot Arizona afternoons, check out the Ice Cream Corner, which sells one-of-a-kind date ice cream and date shakes. Although “date” certainly isn’t a typical ice cream flavoring, many travelers have been blown away by how delicious the combination is! 

Overall, Dateland makes for an interesting place to stop while driving to San Diego for a unique experience outside of a typical road trip adventure.

Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park

One of the most fascinating stops on a drive from Phoenix to San Diego, the Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park, has an eerie and haunted quality to it. Operating for 33 years and housing over 3,000 inmates during this time, the original iron cells and bars of this prison have been maintained and restored in a historic park.

In the museum, you can learn about some of the famous inmates, such as stagecoach robber Pearl Hart known as the “Bandit Queen.” If you want to take the dare, you can even visit what’s referred to as the “Dark Cell,” which is the solitary confinement chamber that was the harshest form of punishment in prison. 

Despite its grim history, the museum has done a good job in becoming a family-friendly destination where kids can enjoy interactive exhibits to learn about the westward migration in the United States, which led to the formation of the prison.

Imperial Sand Dunes

The other-worldly quality of the expanse of sand dunes in southern California makes this section of the drive to San Diego from Phoenix one of the most scenic parts of the trip. 

For over 40 miles, these towering sand dunes will be visible along the sides of the highway. Some of the dunes reach over 300 feet!

It’s already impressive enough just to drive through California’s largest mass of sand dunes, but the area also has great opportunities for adventure. For a small recreational fee, you can hike in the dunes or operate an ATV to cruise over the windswept terrain. 

For a more peaceful alternative, you can visit the section of the dunes known as the North Algodones Dunes Wilderness, where vehicles are prohibited. Here you can hike or take part in a horseback riding tour through the dunes. 

Keep in mind that facilities like bathrooms and water aren’t very accessible here. If you plan on stopping to visit this incredible natural wonder while driving to San Diego, make sure you pack plenty of water, sunscreen, and other necessities.

Kofa National Wildlife Refuge

The Kofa National Wildlife Refuge is accessible on either the I-10 or the I-8 route, although if you’re taking I-10 on your drive to San Diego from Phoenix, it’s a bit more of a direct shot. 

This stunning wilderness area was established to protect Arizona’s population of desert bighorn sheep. Although it’s not guaranteed that you’ll spot one of these animals, make sure you keep your eyes peeled since these native Arizona sheep often make an appearance!

The rugged desert landscape and stunning rock formations make the Kofa National Wildlife Refuge a popular stop for photographers, nature lovers, and stargazers since the area has some of the best views of the night sky in the entire state.

Thanks to the large deposits of quartzite found in the rocky terrain, the refuge is also popular among rock hunters in search of crystals. You can hunt for crystals yourself in the Crystal Hill Area if you follow the regulations about the number of specimens you can take. 

Plus, this wilderness area doesn’t get as much tourist traffic as some of the other natural wonders of Arizona, making it a perfect place to visit if you’re hoping to experience the wonders of the Arizona landscape without the crowds. 

Keep in mind that Kofa is much more remote than other parks in Arizona. There are no gas stations or services inside the refuge itself, so if you’re planning on driving through this scenic area on your road trip to San Diego, make sure you have a full tank of gas, snacks, and drinks for the time you’ll be there. 

Cell phone service is also spotty at best, so it’s a good idea to have maps downloaded before you arrive.

Joshua Tree National Park

The star of the show on the I-10 route driving from Phoenix to San Diego is Joshua Tree National Park. This park has one of the most diverse and unique ecosystems in the United States and should be on the bucket list for any road trip in southern California.

Named after the iconic, twisted Joshua Trees, the National Park is known for its stunning sunrises and sunsets, rugged desert landscapes, and a plethora of wildlife. 

It’s highly recommended to spend at least a night in the park to better appreciate the landscape, not to mention the spectacular night sky! The park has some of the best opportunities for stargazing in the state, thanks to the low light pollution and open landscape. 

Check out some of the top hiking spots, like the trails through the Indian Canyons, where you’ll be treated to scenes of incredible waterfalls cascading down the red-rock canyons. Ryan Mountain is another popular hiking destination that has particularly good views of the characteristic rock formations in the park.

Palm Springs

A popular home base for visiting Joshua Tree National Park, Palm Springs is a great city to include on a road trip to San Diego. It’s less than an hour from the city to the National Park, making it a perfect place to spend a night or two if you want to explore Joshua Tree.

Palm Springs also has a great variety of accommodation options, from resort hotels with huge swimming pools to quaint desert cabins for a more private getaway. There’s plenty to see and do in the city to make it worth your while to plan to stop here during your drive from Phoenix to San Diego. From art to food, to nature, Palm Springs has a great variety of activities to cater to every traveler. 

No visit to Palm Springs would be complete without a ride on the popular Aerial Tramway, which climbs over 5,800 feet up the mountains surrounding the city. The view is spectacular and a good way to escape the summer heat since the temperature usually drops about 30F from the bottom to the top. 

The Living Desert is another popular place to visit, which combines a botanic garden and zoo into one attraction. The scenic landscape is home to native desert plants as well as animals from around the world, like giraffes and camels. The two main routes from Houston to the Grand Canyon are north on I-40 or slightly farther south on I-10. I-40 is usually picked since you’ll pass through Albuquerque, but for those who have already visited Albuquerque or if you like the idea of venturing closer to the Mexican border and including Big Bend, then the I-10 route is a good option. 

The drives are about the same in terms of length, and we’ve highlighted some spots along both routes so you can make the most of your drive from Houston to the Grand Canyon. 

Houston to Grand Canyon: On the I-40 Route 

If you take the northern route from Houston to the Grand Canyon along I-40, here are some of the parks and cities worth visiting along the way. 

Fort Worth, TX

On the surface, Fort Worth is a fun and modern city, but you’ll also discover a fascinating historical side. 

Once a trading post on the Chisolm Trail, you can now take a step back into the past at the National Cowgirl Museum or learn about early pioneers at the Fort Worth Hall of Fame. Kids will especially enjoy seeing the twice-daily cattle drive! 

About four hours from Houston, Fort Worth makes a great first stop on your drive to the Grand Canyon.

Amarillo, TX

With an authentic Wild West feel, Amarillo has some cool historic landmarks tastefully combined with a sophisticated modern feel. It’s one of the best stops along the Historic Route 66, and has a bit of everything from upscale dining venues to cowboy adventures. 

It’s not a bad idea to spend a few nights in Amarillo during your drive from Houston to the Grand Canyon. 

This city is the gateway to Palo Duro Canyon, the second-longest canyon in the United States. Just because you’re seeing the Grand Canyon doesn’t mean you should pass up Palo Duro! Plus, it’s usually less crowded than the Grand Canyon, so you can enjoy a more natural experience. 

Cadillac Ranch is another iconic site in Amarillo. These ten painted and decorated Cadillacs have turned into a permanent installation of desert art and have been featured in a number of movies and music videos. It’s a great place to get some photos of your Southwest road trip and one of the most unique places to visit in Texas!

Tucumari and Route 66 Monument, NM

As you drive along Route 66, you’ll want to stop at the Route 66 Monument and Route 66 Museum located in Tucumcari, New Mexico. 

The museum is fascinating to learn about the origins of this famous road trip in the Southwest, plus there are some awesome classic cars on display that both kids and adults will enjoy! 

If you have more time to spend in Tucumari, you might also want to take a driving tour of the city to spot all the amazing murals (over 40 in total) which decorate many of the buildings. There are a few motor inns making it worthy of an overnight stop. 

On your way out of town, be sure to stop for some unique souvenirs at Tee Pee Curios to commemorate your drive along Route 66.

Albuquerque

Visiting Albuquerque could be an entire trip in itself, so it’s worth setting some time aside to explore this city as you make your way from Houston to the Grand Canyon. 

Unless you’re afraid of heights, everyone should try going on one of the famous hot air balloon rides over the city for some stunning views of the desert landscape. 

Back on the ground, there’s, even more, to explore at the Albuquerque Zoo, which is a popular attraction for families, or the Petroglyph National Monument, where you can learn about the fascinating prehistory of the region. 

Albuquerque has a great combination of modern style and historic charm. You’ll feel like you’ve stepped between worlds as you make your way between the fascinating Old Town, filled with adobe buildings dating back to the city’s founding in 1706 to the upscale shops and restaurants of the vibrant downtown area.

Petrified Forest National Park

Although it’s not as well-known as some national parks, Petrified Forest offers a unique experience that will probably surprise you. 

This is the only national park directly on Route 66, and it’s well worth a stop as you make your way from Houston to the Grand Canyon. 

The unique landscape of the park is covered in colorful remains of petrified wood and encompasses some areas of the Painted Desert of Arizona. Just driving through the park itself will give you an appreciation for the amazing landscape, and there are some great overlooks along the way which are perfect for photographs. 

If you have a bit more time, you can get out to hike some of the trails or stop by the Painted Desert Visitor Center, which has some of the fossils discovered in the Petrified Forest. 

Note that there is no camping permitted of any sort in Petrified Forest National Park. You’ll want to look at options in Holbrook as your nearest town of size.

Meteor Crater National Landmark

The enormous Meteor Crater about 40 miles east of Flagstaff is one of the most incredible landmarks in the United States, especially considering its truly out-of-this-world formation! 

Almost a mile wide and about 550 feet deep, it’s hard to imagine the catastrophic impact this meteor had when it crashed into the Earth about 50,000 years ago. Scientists estimate that the explosion would have been more devastating than an atomic bomb. 

It’s definitely worth getting tickets so you can walk right to the edge of the crater to appreciate the impressive size for yourself. Kids will also love visiting the Discovery Center & Space Museum, which has fun interactive experiences, including a 4D immersive theater!

You could press on through to the Grand Canyon from here, but we’d recommend you stay in nearby Winslow overnight or head on to Flagstaff before completing your Grand Canyon road trip.

Before we dive into your end destination, let’s see where you can stop on the more southern route, before reaching Flagstaff.

Houston to Grand Canyon: On the I-10 W Route

Taking the southern I-10 route while driving from Houston to the Grand Canyon will give you a chance to see some of the impressive landscape of the Southwest. The downside, there are some much longer driving distances and fewer accommodation options en route.

Nonetheless, those up for a unique adventure, here are a few of the top places to stop along this scenic drive to the Grand Canyon from Texas: 

San Antonio

With a great combination of museums, delicious Tex-Mex cuisine, and fun outdoor activities, San Antonio is a perfect place to stop for an afternoon on your drive from Houston to the Grand Canyon. 

Visit the famous Alamo site to learn about the history which makes San Antonio stand out in U.S. history. Afterward, explore the River Walk, where you can see other historic buildings, and find a restaurant to refuel before you continue your drive.

Big Bend National Park

If you’re on a road trip from Houston to the Grand Canyon, it’s not a bad idea to set some time aside to explore other national parks along the way. In terms of scenic national parks, Big Bend definitely ranks high on the list!  

This stunning park in southwest Texas combines the craggy landscape of the Chisos Mountains with the rugged beauty of the Chihuahuan Desert. 

It’s well worth camping or spending a few nights in one of the nearby lodges to hike and explore the cliffs of Santa Elena Canyon or relax and rejuvenate in the natural thermal hot springs in the park.

Gila National Forest

Another treasure of the Southwest that’s worth visiting on your drive from Houston to the Grand Canyon is Gila National Forest. 

There are endless opportunities for hiking the trails to get views of Whitewater Canyon and the rugged desert mountain scenery. Gila National Forest is actually New Mexico’s first designated wilderness area and covers almost 3.3 million acres! 

New Mexico is already famous for its beautiful night sky, but there might not be a better place for stargazing than at the Cosmic Campground in Gila National Forest, which is designated an International Dark Sky Sanctuary! 

Other attractions of this wilderness area include natural hot springs, horse-back riding tours of the mountains, and amazing swimming holes located in some of the canyons. 

Pro Tip: There aren’t any major cities near Gila National Forest, so if you’re hoping to spend a day or two here on your trip from Houston to the Grand Canyon, your best options are camping or staying at one of the lodges near the wilderness area.

Flagstaff

Not far from the Grand Canyon itself, Flagstaff is one of the top cities to visit along the famous Route 66. 

The city has a combination of outdoor activities, historic landmarks, and modern flare. It’s also a certified dark sky city and is a popular place for astronomers and night-sky enthusiasts. 

Visit the Lowell Observatory and learn about the discovery of Pluto, which happened right in Flagstaff! 

Thanks to its elevation, Flagstaff has cooler temperatures than other places in Arizona, and outdoor activities include hiking and swimming in the summer or skiing at the Arizona Snowbowl in the winter. 

It’s also a great base to explore some of the historic sites of the Southwest, such as the ancient pueblos and cliff dwellings of early Native American tribes who lived in the area.

The South Rim entrance to the Grand Canyon is only about an hour and a half away from Flagstaff, and there are numerous guided tours that depart from the city. 

Where To Stay Visiting Grand Canyon

Many choose to stay in Flagstaff and then day trip into the Grand Canyon, though be warned, if you’re doing this, you want to set off super early or later in the afternoon as the queues from around 9:00 AM onwards are LOOOOOONG!

If you weren’t quick enough with a national parks lodge booking, a better option is to stay in Tusayan, just outside the South Entrance. There’s a reasonable range of affordable hotels, motels, and RV Parks here, putting you at the gateway to the greatest natural wonder in the United States.

Note that this US road trip itinerary will see you crossing several time zones! Texas follows CST/CDT, New Mexico follows MST/MDT, whilst Arizona stays in MST year round; so in summer, you’ll be winding your clocks back twice!

The Grand Canyon is the gem of the southwestern United States and a popular spot for hikers, family vacations, and photographers. While it is possible to fly (st least part of the way!), driving to the Grand Canyon can be a better option since it allows you the opportunity to visit other parks and natural wonders along the way! 

If you’re planning on driving from Denver to the Grand Canyon, there are some spots you definitely won’t want to pass up.

Distance From Denver To The Grand Canyon

It’s between 700 and 800 miles from Denver to the Grand Canyon depending on if you are going to the North or South Rim. 

How Long Do I Need Driving From Denver To The Grand Canyon? 

Driving directly from Denver to the Grand Canyon would take about 12 hours with good traffic and few stops. 

We’d definitely recommend breaking up the trip into at least three days of driving, but it would be easy to spend a week or more traveling depending on how much time you want to spend at the other National Parks along the way. 

The drive from Denver to the Grand Canyon will take you past all of Utah’s Mighty 5 National Parks, each of which could practically be an entire trip in themselves if you wanted!

Best Time Of Year To Drive From Denver To The Grand Canyon

Spring and fall are usually the best times to drive from Denver to the Grand Canyon. Summers in Arizona can be very hot, not to mention all the tourist crowds which come to visit the Grand Canyon during this time. 

It’s also entirely possible to take a Denver to Grand Canyon road trip in winter. You’ll need to deal with snowy weather on the northern portion of your trip, but winters in the Grand Canyon (South Rim) tend to be mild and much more peaceful, thanks to the lack of visitors during this season. 

Best Stops On A Denver To Grand Canyon Road Trip

To make the most of your experience driving from Denver to the Grand Canyon, here are some of the National Parks and other natural wonders you won’t want to pass up along the way!  

Glenwood Springs and the Rocky Mountains, Colorado

Heading southwest from Denver will bring you through some of the rugged and beautiful landscapes of the Rocky Mountains. One of the best places to stop is Glenwood Springs, known for its incredible natural thermal springs. 

It’s between a two to three-hour drive to reach the springs from Denver, and even though it might not be a long ride, you won’t want to pass up the chance to soak in the Iron Mountain Hot Springs. 

To appreciate the scenery and some of the trails through the Rocky Mountains, it’s not a bad idea to stay at least a night either at one of the hotels or lodges, or there are also campgrounds for a more rough and wild adventure.

Grand Junction and Wine Tasting, Colorado

Leaving behind the incredible mountain views behind you on your Denver to Grand Canyon road trip, you’ll pass through some of Colorado’s prime wine country. 

Even if you’re pressed for time, it’s still totally manageable to fit in an afternoon visit to a winery and grab lunch at one of the excellent local restaurants. 

If you have time to stop for longer, Grand Junction is a great place to explore the red rock country and canyons of the area. Outdoor activities range from horse-back riding and river rafting in summer to skiing and snowshoeing in winter so there’s always something fun to explore.

Arches National Park, Utah

The first of Utah’s Mighty 5 to visit on your road trip from Denver to the Grand Canyon is Arches National Park. 

Where the red rock spires and towers meet the clear blue sky, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into another world. 

It’s home to some of the most iconic natural formations in the United States, so be sure to pack your camera! With over 2,000 naturally occurring stone arches, you won’t need to worry about finding picturesque spots for photographs. 

Keep in mind that Arches National Park operates on a timed entry ticket format April to October, and booking for tickets begins three months in advance. To make sure you have the opportunity to visit the arches, plan ahead to have your ticket ready. 

We’d also recommend trying to visit the park either earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon. Not only will you miss the majority of the tourist crowds, but you’ll also get to experience the spectacular dawn or evening lights illuminating the surreal landscape.

Accommodation in Moab

Moab places you within easy reach of both Arches and Canyonlands National Parks and is a good rest stop on this Denver to Grand Canyon itinerary. Whether it’s luxury glamping or an easy motor inn you’re after, you can search for availability here:

Canyonlands National Park, Utah

Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or traveling with young children, there are plenty of trails in Canyonlands to fit your needs. Hikes can be as short as half an hour or as long as several days, depending on your interests. 

Pro Tip: Families with youngsters will want to make a stop at the nearby dinosaur museum located close to where Highway 191 meets Highway 313. Here, you can learn about some of the fossil discoveries made in this area of Utah.

If you are looking to fast-track your journey to the Grand Canyon from Denver, then continue on after Canyonlands along the US I-90 S / US-160W, and you’ll make it to Grand Canyon Village in around 6 hours.

Capitol Reef National Park. Utah

Other must-visit places include the Petroglyphs Panel, where you can see some of the figures painted on the rocks by historic civilizations, Hickman Bridge which is known for its spectacular views, and the iconic Cassidy Arch Trail. 

For families, the Ripple Rock Nature Center, close to the Visitor Center, is also a great place to visit with fun, kid-friendly activities and displays.  

Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah

Bryce Canyon is best known for the hoodoo rock formations found here. These strange, spire-shaped red-rock structures give the landscape an other-worldly feel and set this park apart from the other parks in Utah’s Mighty 5. Some of the hoodoos can reach up to 150 feet high! 

The hiking trails of the park are the best way to see the hoodoos and canyons. Some of the top hikes are the Navajo Loop trail, which takes about two hours to complete, and the Rim Trail, where you’ll have a bird’s eye view of the largest concentration of hoodoos in the park. 

We’d recommend spending at least one night in Bryce Canyon on your road trip from Denver to the Grand Canyon, even if it’s just for the incredible view of the night sky! Bryce Canyon is certified as a Dark Sky Park, and the incredible air quality will give you some of the clearest night sky views in the entire United States. 

Zion National Park, Utah

Rounding off Utah’s Mighty 5 is Zion National Park, known for its 2,000-foot-deep canyon and rainbow-layered sandstone cliffs. 

Any road trip from Denver to the Grand Canyon wouldn’t be complete without the inclusion of the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive. Although it’s only six miles long, this route takes you through the heart of Zion and the incredible vistas the canyon offers. 

However, the drive is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Zion, and we’d recommend setting aside at least a day or two to explore the park. There are plenty of hiking trails ranging from easy to strenuous. These hikes will bring you to spectacular canyon waterfalls, amazing swimming holes surrounded by towering sandstone walls, and jaw-dropping vistas. 

Zion is also a world-famous rock-climbing destination. Even if scaling canyon walls isn’t your idea of fun, it’s still incredible to see the climbers making their way up these sheer cliff faces. 

If you have a bit more time, we’d also recommend checking out the Kolob Canyons, which are located on the northwest side of the park. Known as the “wild side” of Zion, there are fewer visitors in this area and some amazing natural wonders including the 287-foot-long Kolob Arch.

Hikers be aware, if you want to take on the famous Angel’s Landing Trail, you’ll need to enter a seasonal ballot to secure your spot.

Horseshoe Bend, Arizona

One of the most iconic sites along the Colorado River, Horseshoe Bend is a must-visit stop along the drive from Denver to the Grand Canyon. 

At minimum you should at least walk to the overlook (less than a mile of hiking) to get some photographs of this stunning circular bend in the river. If you have more time, you can make a full day out of the experience by going on a river rafting trip or taking a helicopter tour over the canyon for some truly stunning views. 

Antelope Canyon, Arizona

Before you round off your trip and begin exploring the Grand Canyon National Park, one more stop you’ll want to make is at Arizona’s famous Antelope Canyon. 

This spectacular canyon is one of America’s most photographed sites. Once you see it for yourself, you’ll have no problem understanding why! 

Since Antelope Canyon is part of protected Navajo land, the only way to visit it is by guided tour. Keep in mind that tours fill up very quickly, especially during the summer, so you’ll want to reserve your spot well in beforehand so you’ll have a chance to see the incredible curves and bends of the sandstone canyon. 

Grand Canyon North Rim, Arizona 

Pro Tip: Keep in mind that the North Rim is only open between May and October, while the South Rim of the Grand Canyon is open year-round.

Itinerary Variations Denver to Grand Canyon & Return

As we mentioned above, a shortcut you could take is to head south from Moab and Canyonlands down the US I-90. If you’re taking this route, we’d also recommend making a stop at Monument Valley.

This 17-mile loop road on Navajo Land between Utah and Arizona is one of the most truly fascinating desert-scapes in the country, only a small detour off your route.

Alternatively, skip Moab on your way out. Head to the more westerly of the Utah Mighty 5 first, drop down into Arizona from Zion. After your visit to the Grand Canyon, take the scenic Monument Valley/Moab route on your return.

Two of the most popular national parks in the United States, Zion National Park, and Grand Canyon National Park, are natural wonders that you don’t want to pass up on!

Starting the road trip is Zion National Park, renowned for its towering sandstone cliffs favored by rock climbers all over the world. The park has one of the biggest free-standing arches in the world, the Kolob Arch, stretching more than 287 feet.

Resting on the other end is Grand Canyon National Park, one of the world’s seven natural wonders. It is the largest canyon in the world, and one of the best examples of arid-land erosion found on the planet.

On this desert road trip, you and the family will see these spectacular wonders of nature’s grand design in person! Undoubtedly one of the most interesting road trips in the US!

Distance From Zion National Park To Grand Canyon

The distance from Zion National Park to Grand Canyon’s North Rim is 110 miles, which takes about two hours, give or take. However, if you plan on driving straight from Zion National Park to Grand Canyon’s South Rim, this spans about 255 miles, with almost five hours to complete. 

The Grand Canyon’s North and South Rims are only ten miles apart, but it takes five hours to drive from one end to the other. There is a noticeable difference between the vegetation and even climate between the two rims, making it appear as if you’re visiting two different parks on one trip!

The most common route from Zion National Park to Grand Canyon’s North Rim is to take Highway 9 east out of the park to Highway 89A or Highway 89 in Kanab, about 30 minutes from Zion National Park’s east entrance. 

Use the Highway 89A path for a more direct and scenic path to the North Rim entrance of Grand Canyon National Park, where Highway 89A will connect with SR-67 to reach the North Rim. After exploring the North Rim, take SR-67 to reach Highway 89A, turning right and following the path until Highway 89A connects with Highway 89. Then, follow Highway 89 until you reach SR-64 to the South Rim entrance of Grand Canyon National Park. 

How Long do I Need Driving Zion National Park to Grand Canyon

You should plan for at least 2-4 days to get the most out of a road trip from Zion National Park to the Grand Canyon’s North and South Rim. 

A nonstop road trip to Grand Canyon’s North Rim will only require a day. However, if you plan to head to Grand Canyon’s South Rim without any stops on the way to both rims, you’ll need at least two days to spend at both. 

Best Time of Year to Drive from Zion National Park to Grand Canyon

The best time of year, hands down, to take a road trip from Zion National Park to Grand Canyon National Park is in the spring or the fall.

The summer is the busiest time of year for Zion National Park and Grand Canyon National Park when all the kids are out of school and rearing to explore the world with their parents and friends. The summer is all the hottest at these parks, and it can be pretty grueling to spend outdoors in the hot sun. 

It’s best to avoid traveling to the parks during the winter season. Zion National Park and Grand Canyon National Park get snow, making the roads icy and possibly dangerous. Visiting Grand Canyon National Park North Rim is impossible during the winter as all the roads, restaurants, and other nearby accommodations are closed for the season. 

The spring and fall seasons are a great go-between the extremely hot and cold temperatures. During the fall season, eye-catching, vibrant fall colors decorate the trees and cooler temperatures to enjoy the great outdoors.

Best Stops on a Zion National Park to Grand Canyon Road Trip

Zion National Park

The first national park of Utah, Zion National Park, holds geological and historical value—the place where native people and pioneers once traversed.

The impressive towering sandstone cliffs of the park combine stunning colors of pinks, reds, and creams, paired with diverse species of animals and plants. Zion National Park is famous for its large canyon, Zion Canyon, with exceptional opportunities for visitors to hike along the canyon’s floor, known as The Narrows.

The park is also known for its natural rock arches, such as the Kolob, the Hidden Arch, and the Crawford. Many of these favored rock formations can be seen from great distances thanks to their imposing heights. 

Explore adventurous outdoor activities at Zion National Park, including climbing, camping, hiking, and swimming.

Consider camping with the family at one of the three available campgrounds at Zion National Park. The South Campground is closed during the winter while Watchman Campground is open year-round. And Lava Point Campground is an hour’s drive from the park, located on Kolob Terrace Road, which is also closed during the winter. 

Moqui Cave

Located in Southern Utah, less than six miles north of Kanab and less than one mile from the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, the Moqui Cave is a historic landmark and natural history museum. This impactful attraction preserves and features Native American artifacts and dinosaur tracks.

Some of the most popular activities at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park include sandboarding, sand sledding, ATVing, and hiking its expansive open landscapes. Catching the invigorating thrill of sandboarding or sand sledding down the tall sand dunes makes for an unforgettable memory made with the family.

The visitor center at the park rents out sleds and boards for everyone to try their hand at riding down the sand dunes at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park.

Important Note: Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park has little shade. Make sure to bring plenty of water and wear sunscreen! 

Kanab, Utah

A small town and hub spot for people traveling between the national parks, Kanab is full of hidden gems worth stopping to ponder over. 

The self-proclaimed “Little Hollywood,” Kanab, has been used as a filming location for more than a few films thanks to its classic American West vibe. You’ll note the different abandoned film sets throughout the town now set up as quirky tourist attractions. The Little Hollywood Museum is one of them. Plus, it’s free to visit! 

In February, Kanab hosts a three-day festival that features the Battle of the Bands competition, a balloon glow and lantern launch, and a street fair. All within view of the iconic red rock formations of the area as 40+ hot air balloons drift into the sky. 

Le Fevre Overlook

Make a quick stop at Le Fevre Overlook for breathtaking views of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, an expansive sequence of sedimentary rock layers that reach from Bryce Canyon National Park to Zion National Park and Grand Canyon National Park.

Le Fevre Overlook offers a massive set of standing binoculars to view the monument’s geological features. 

Jacob Lake (+ Accommodations)

A tranquil area located in the North Kaibab National Forest, Jacob Lake is a town and recreation area to stop at and even lodge between heading to or leaving the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. 

The recreation area of Jacob Lake features a peaceful lake encompassed by towering ponderosa pines. Nearby are a campground, restaurant, store, lodge, and numerous trails to go hiking or biking in the thriving forest. Many travelers will choose to stay in Jacob Lake as Grand Canyon National Park tends to have little lodging availability. 

We recommend packing some snacks (don’t forget the cutlery!) to settle down for a picnic surrounded by the natural beauty of Kaibab National Forest. 

Accommodations: Grand Canyon’s North Rim is pretty remote, so there aren’t many options to choose from to stay the night. Jacob Lake Inn is a family-owned and operated business that offers a rustic, comfortable setting perfect for a road trip from Zion to Grand Canyon National Park. 

The inn is a 44-mile drive, full of spectacular scenery, from the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Tall pines of the Kaibab National Forest surround Jacob Lake Inn, with nearby activities to fish at the Colorado River, sightseeing, hiking, and more!  

Grand Canyon National Park (North Rim)

At a higher elevation than the South Rim, Grand Canyon National Park’s North Rim is more than 8,000 feet above sea level (the South Rim is 7,200 feet). Due to its higher elevation, the North Rim has cooler temperatures year-round.

Though the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park tends to attract more visitors because of the North Rim’s remoteness and closure during the winter, the North Rim offers more pleasant temperatures, picturesque landscapes, and a calming atmosphere to sink into.

Bright Angel Point is one such place to witness these breathtaking views. Found at the Visitor Center, close to the campground and Grand Canyon Lodge, Bright Angel Point is a notorious spot for its glorious sunset and sunrises.

Important Note: The North Rim of the Grand Canyon is only open seasonally, from May 15-October 15. 

Antelope Canyon

Protected by the Navajo Parks and Recreation within Navajo Nation, Antelope Canyon is a world-famous slot canyon that can only be accessed by reserving a tour. 

Antelope Canyon was shaped by millions of years of wind and water erosion. Named after the herds of pronghorn antelope that roamed the area once upon a time, the slot canyon is notorious for its picturesque sights and hiking opportunities.

Horseshoe Bend

A world-renowned natural landmark, Horseshoe Bend visualizes the shape of a horseshoe made of a range of red and orange-colored rocks. A river flows through the horseshoe shape, cutting out the massive boulder, an example of wind’s erosion through time.

Grand Canyon National Park (South Rim)

As the cold winter days begin to warm up and see more daylight, it seems like the world is reawakening with the coming of spring. One of the best ways to experience the season is to visit some of the magnificent US National Parks.  

It’s during this magical time that you’ll see budding flowers, the migrating songbirds and even catch a glimpse of cute newly born animals that call these parks home. During the spring, some parks can experience cool weather phenomena. They can seem dormant most of the year and come to life with bursts of color in the spring. 

If you’re not sure which park to visit, don’t worry. This list has some of the best national parks to visit in the spring.  

Top 10 Best US National Parks to Visit This Spring   

1. Shenandoah National Park

Location: Virginia

Spring is a major event in the famous Shenandoah National Park. The bees are buzzing, the birds are singing, and of course, the flowers are blooming. The park even hosts some fun wildflower events, including guided tours. This way, you can get an in-depth look at this beautiful park and all of its springtime treasures.  

Flowers begin to bloom in early spring and continue until late into the season, giving you plenty of time to enjoy them. The trillium, Shenandoah’s signature flower, is a major reason it’s one of the best national parks to visit in May. Along with these budding flowers come the butterflies. You’ll be sure to see them flying from flower to flower.  

Wildlife viewing is another reason Shenandoah is a delight during the spring season. It’s possible to catch a glimpse of cute, spotted deer and furry black bears. Birders will be in heaven at this east coast national park with the many migrant songbirds that return to the park in springtime.

2. Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Location: North Carolina/Tennessee 

As the winter begins to melt away, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park comes alive. One of the major draws to the Smokies is their blooming wildflowers. No matter where you head in the park, you’re bound to see beautiful colors throughout, making it an easy choice as one of the best US national parks to visit in spring. It’s also a great time to see wildlife enjoying their own spring rituals.  

Consider joining the Wildflower Pilgrimage in the Smokies. This annual event has many guided tours and events throughout the park focusing on the beautiful blooming flowers. This coming year, it takes place on May 1-4, 2024 making it one of the best national parks to visit this April. 

The spring is also a perfect time for hiking, biking, and kayaking in the Smokies. Not too hot, not too cold, but just right! However, check ahead and be aware that the spring weather can change quickly, and it’s known to rain during the spring months. Pack accordingly, and don’t let that stop you from enjoying the park.

A great alternative plan for the rain is to see the park from the dry comfort of your own car. • There is no entry fee for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. 
• However, beginning March 1, 2023, a parking tag is required to park anywhere within the boundaries of the park (parking is considered a stop of more than 15 minutes; scenic driving with only quick photo stops remains free). 
• Parking tags costs are: Daily- $5, Weekly – $15, Annual- $40

3. Grand Canyon National Park

Location: Arizona  

Springtime in the Grand Canyon National Park is seriously one of the best times to visit this bucket list item. During the spring, the canyon comes alive with the bright blooming colors of flowering plants, cacti, of course, and even lovely flowering desert trees. 

It can be a mix of weather during the spring season. So, it’s possible to catch a late snowstorm or fog blanketing this geographical wonder. But hey, both make for insanely cool photo ops! Spring’s longer days bring more daylight to the Grand Canyon, making the best hikes even better.    

The Grand Canyon is one of America’s favorite national parks for spring break. But don’t let that stop you from taking a fabulous road trip over. Instead, make sure to plan ahead!

Seasonal Closures: The North Rim will open for the season beginning May 15, 2023. Check the National Parks Service website for up-to-date alerts and road conditions (early indications are that North Rim will not open this year until June due to heavier than usual snow fall)

4. Saguaro National Park

Location: Arizona 

Not too hot, not too cold, but just right! That’s the weather you’ll find at one of the best national parks in the deep desert this spring, so why not see Saguaro for yourself? 

Saguaro is one of the best national parks to visit in April because that’s when wildflowers are in full bloom. But If you’re looking to visit later in the season, you’ll be in luck as the cactus flowers of the giant saguaro cacti bloom between mid-May and early June.

Another plus is that peak season happens in winter due to its warmer weather, so you’ll see fewer crowds in the park during the spring. 

Spring is also a great time for wildlife viewing. It’s possible to see Gila Monsters underfoot and keep an eye out for Rattlesnakes too. Bird watching is great fun with Gila-Woodpeckers and Gilded Flickers.  

You can hike, bike, or drive through the park. Some of the best hikes in Saguaro are Loma Verde Loop and the Freeman Homestead Trail. Or give your feet a rest on the scenic drive of the Cactus Forest Loop.

5. Death Valley National Park

Location: California/Nevada  

A visit to Death Valley National Park is a truly unique experience. How often do you visit the hottest place on the planet? Well, okay, it’s not advised to head there during the summer months when temperatures are known to reach over 120°F.

Instead, consider early spring when mild temps in the low 80s make exploring the best hikes in the park ideal.  

Blooming wildflowers also make Death Valley one of the best national parks to visit in March and April. One can hope for a super-bloom when the conditions are just right for colorful flowers to blanket the valley. 6. Redwood National Park

Location: California  

Redwood National Park is hands-down one of the best places to visit in spring. It’s here that you can see some of the tallest trees on the planet. It’s so special that it’s even designated a UNESCO Heritage Site.  

Although the Redwoods are a favorite destination year-round, it’s during the spring season that’s really special. The first key thing is that there are fewer crowds than in the summer. It’s also less wet and rainy than in the winter. Early spring sees temperatures in the 40s and 50s. But by late spring, you’re likely to see temps in the 60s and even 70°F. 

Spring brings the reawakening of nature. It’s the best time to see blooming wildflowers and wildlife viewing of bald eagles, Roosevelt elk, and even sea lions out on the nearby beaches.    

Redwood has one of the most beautiful scenic drives in the country. You’ll love driving along the Redwood Coast, where you’ll see both the old-growth trees and the stunning Pacific Coastline. And if you head inland, you can find hidden gems to hike right off the highway.

7. Big Bend National Park

Location: Texas 

One of the key things to do in Big Bend National Park is to hike its killer trails over the desert terrain. That’s why it’s one of the best national parks in spring. It’s during the cooler weather of the spring season that conditions are ideal for hiking, not like in the summer when it’s just too darn hot.

You’ll have tons of sunshine and daytime temperatures in the 70s and 80s °F. It can even reach 90°F late in the season. 

Spring is also the perfect time to kayak the Rio Grande or soak in the Langford Hot Springs. Bluebonnets bloom throughout texas in the springtime, so you can’t miss them. On the drive to Big Bend and in the park, you’ll see how they color the landscape. 

Far from the light pollution of cities, Big Bend is a fabulous place to stargaze. To get the best views of the night sky, consider camping in the park.  

Big Bend is a favorite destination during Spring Break, so make sure to plan accommodations well in advance as options within and close to the park are limited.

8. Joshua Tree National Park

Location: California 

As a national park in a desert setting, springtime is just about the perfect time to visit Joshua Tree. It’s when you’ll have cooler weather than in the summer, reaching up into the 70s and 80s during the day.  

The other major advantage of visiting Joshua Tree National Park in the spring is that you’ll get a chance to see the beauty of spring in bloom. Flowers from cacti and desert plants are in full force during the spring. You’ll see blankets of yellow and white flowers dotted with bright blues and reds too.

Lucky for us, the wildflowers tend to bloom at lower elevations beginning in February, while upper elevations will see peak flowers blooming closer to June. This way, you’re likely to see colorful flowers at any time of the spring season.  

Spring is also a great time for wildlife viewing in Joshua Tree. Keep an eye out for white-tailed antelope squirrels, lizards, and coyotes.

9. Arches National Park

Location: Utah   

Arches National Park is another top-of-the-list best US national park to visit in the spring. And many people agree! This beautiful landscape is great to see any time of the year, really. But the springtime is when the temperatures begin to warm up, averaging between 60-80°F. So it won’t be too hot, like in the summer, or too chilly, like in the winter.  

With perfect temps and lots of sunshine, you’ll be set to explore the park and see the awesome geological formations. Delicate Arch and Landscape Arch are the ones not to miss. But they can become really crowded during the spring. It’s probably best to see these when it’s a bit less populated, like first thing in the morning. After that, head to other places in the park, such as High Park Avenue.  

You will love the trip along Scenic Drive Road. You can keep stopping at various viewpoints to your heart’s content and really take it all in.  

A large event that happens annually in the Spring to be aware of is the Easter Jeep Safari – around these dates, Moab can be exceptionally busy, and you may find a shortage of affordable accommodation options for families.

10. Zion National Park

Location: Utah  

Let’s be real, Zion National Park is on everyone’s bucket list. The truth is that, YES, it really is that awesome! You should definitely make it happen. So, why not make the trip for spring break?  

During the springtime, you’ll have lots of sun and warm temperatures, perfect for hiking and getting to key spots like Angel’s Landing. If you are a hiking fanatic, The Narrows is super cool to conquer, just come prepared with the right gear to hike in the water, which is colder in the spring.  

Zion has so many different trails for every hiking level. So you can definitely find the best hikes that are right for everyone in your family.  

Entrance Fee: $35 for private vehicles, valid for 7 days. 

Entry Permits: If you’re planning to visit Angel’s Landing be aware that you’ll need to enter the seasonal lottery some months in advance. The Spring lottery opens 1 to 20 January. Only a limited number of hiking slots are made available a day in advance.

Pro Tip: Consider parking in Springdale and taking the free shuttle to Zion. It’s the best way to bypass the crazy traffic getting into the park. The shuttle runs from March to October.

• Springtime weather can change suddenly. Stay informed with weather alerts during your road trip. NPS.gov is a great place to check for alerts and road closures in the park.  
• Many of the best US National Parks to visit in spring have mild, sunny weather. But rain and wind are major possibilities. Always carry a light shell jacket to help protect you from either.  
• Many national parks in the US change from winter to summer operating hours during May; this can include the re-opening of ranger huts and activities, as well as a change to needing entry permits in advance so plan your late spring national park road trip carefully with this in mind!
