4. Mount Rainier National Park, Washington

In summer, the subalpine meadows burst into life with colorful wildflower displays, creating a stunning contrast against the icy peak. The park offers over 260 miles of maintained trails, leading visitors through pristine wilderness, past tumbling waterfalls, and to breathtaking viewpoints. 7. Skagit Valley Tulip Fields

Each spring, the Skagit Valley in Washington transforms into a breathtaking patchwork of vibrant colors as millions of tulips burst into bloom. The tulip fields, part of a thriving bulb-growing industry, create a stunning visual spectacle reminiscent of the Netherlands.

Rows upon rows of tulips in every imaginable hue stretch across the flat valley floor, set against the backdrop of the Cascade Mountains. There’s something about fall that completely transforms a place. With comfortable temperatures, trees exploding into vibrant colors, sunny days, and crisp air, fall is one of the most wonderful times of the year to get lost in nature.

If you’re wondering where to go this season to experience fall in its full splendor, checking out a few US national parks may just be the ideal vacation for you. With the excuse to slow down now that the end of the year is approaching, fall also brings in much calmer vibes that allow you to be fully present and really notice the things around you.

1. Rocky Mountain National Park

Location: Colorado

It’s not exactly a secret that Rocky Mountain National Park is one of the most beautiful parks in the entire country, but once the temperatures start to drop, this gorgeous place in Colorado turns into a wonderland for glorious views, incredible nature draped in autumn hues, and some of the best opportunities to see wildlife up close.

The dramatic landscape of Rocky Mountain National Park was carved by water and humongous glaciers, making the scenery look like something out of a painting.

As you explore, you’ll stumble across some of the highest peaks in the country, get treated to views of hundreds of alpine lakes and streams, and get to walk over some of the dreamiest hiking trails in the world.

Even though fall does get a little chilly at Rocky Mountain National Park, it’s highly considered the best time of the year to visit for two reasons: One is that fall foliage covers the gorgeous Trail Ridge Road, which is one of the most scenic highways in the United States and seeing it blanketed by golden aspens is a scene unlike any other.

Secondly, fall brings in the elk rut, which is when elk arrive in the area for mating season. Not only will you be able to see hundreds of them up close, but you’ll also be able to attend the annual Elk Fest organized by the park to learn everything about these mountain-roaming creatures through music, live entertainment, storytelling, and interactive activities.

Entrance Fee: $30 per private vehicle, valid for one day, or $35 per vehicle, valid for seven days

Seasonal Closures: Rocky Mountain National Park runs a timed entry system over the busy summer months, ending October 20, 2024. After this time, you can enter all park areas without reservations. Adverse weather conditions may close roads at any time, though. Keep up to date on NPS Twitter.

2. Shenandoah National Park

Location: Virginia

Tucked away in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, Shenandoah National Park is a mecca for those looking for crisp mountain air and glorious fall foliage. Being only an hour from Washington, D.C., it’s no surprise it’s one of the most popular national parks on the East Coast!

Fall foliage in Shenandoah National Park usually begins in early October and lasts until mid-November, making the season quite long.

3. Acadia National Park

Location: Maine

Acadia National Park definitely takes the cake when it comes to quintessential fall destinations on the East Coast.

Even though Acadia is gorgeous year-round, there’s no better time to visit than the fall months, especially if vibrant autumn colors are what you’re after.

Home to a humongous offering of glorious natural landscapes ranging from woodlands to mountains, lakes, and dramatic coastlines, this is one of the best national parks to visit in the fall if you’re after picturesque views and a variety of recreational activities.

4. Arches National Park

Location: Utah

Perhaps a desert isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when you think of visiting national parks in the fall, but we absolutely had to include Arches National Park in the list because this time of the year is the best time to explore this gem in Utah.

Weather-wise, the temperatures in Arches start to drop in autumn, making it an ideal time for hiking and exploring.

5. Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Location: North Carolina and Tennessee

With so many species of trees within its boundaries, Great Smoky Mountains National Park is another wonderland to visit if you want to see fall tones. Seeing vibrant hues of yellows, oranges, and reds backdropped by snow-capped mountains is definitely something everyone should experience at least once in their lives!

Some of the best things to do in the Smokies to fully experience the season are hiking to see a few of the park’s waterfalls (they look absolutely stunning surrounded by autumn colors!), driving the scenic roads that traverse the park (Newfound Gap Road, Morton Overlook, and Clingman’s Dome Road are all amazing), and renting a cabin inside the park to enjoy your very own personal slice of fall in the park.

6. Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Location: Ohio

As the only national park in Ohio, Cuyahoga Valley is one of the best national parks to visit in the fall if you’d rather check out somewhere that’s not on everyone’s usual radar.

Here, you’ll enjoy crisp evenings and bright sunny days, making this time of year ideal for hiking and exploring (and you’ll find fewer bugs than in the summer!).

Fall foliage usually peaks around the third week of October, but you’ll be able to enjoy the colors pretty much all month, making it one of the prettiest scenic drives in Ohio.

One of the favorite ways for visitors to explore Cuyahoga is by hopping on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad Train, which, as its name may have clued you in, is a train that traverses the valley and provides some of the most beautiful views the entire park has to offer.

Another way to explore is to hike a few trails inside the park. There are over 120 miles of them on the menu. If you’re limited on time, we recommend focusing on the Brandywine Falls trail to see a 65-foot waterfall, the Virginia Kendall Ledges Trail to walk down sandstone rock “ledges,” and the Pine Grove Trail to see beautiful colors.

7. Mount Rainier National Park

Location: Washington

Boasting an active volcano and the most glaciated mountain in the continental United States, Mount Rainier is another wonderful option in PNW when choosing what national parks to visit in the fall.

Mount Rainier is special because it encompasses many different ecosystems, ranging from lowland forests to wetlands and alpine tundra. Moreover, there are 26 named glaciers here and over 1,000 species of plants and animals, many of which are incredibly endangered and have found a safe haven inside the park.

Once the fall season begins, Mount Rainier bursts into life with different activities. An easy day trip from Seattle, a must-do is going on a naturalist-guided walk to spot Roosevelt Elk during the breeding season in September. Other fun things to do during the autumn include going berry picking and mushroom foraging.

As for hiking, some of the best fall hikes to try include Reflection Lakes, The Morain Trail, Third Burroughs, and the Knapsack Pass. Horseback riding is also a wonderful way to explore the park.

Entrance Fee: $30 per private vehicle, valid for seven days

Seasonal Closures: The park is open year-round. However, it is recommended that visitors check road conditions before setting out. Many of the visitor centers and campgrounds close by mid-October.

Note that timed entry was introduced to Mount Rainier NP in 2024; summer special conditions for Sunrise Corridor and Paradise Corridor should be lifted by early September and should not impact your fall driving plans

8. Bryce Canyon National Park

Location: Utah

Bryce Canyon National Park is guaranteed to please if you’re more in the mood to escape fall altogether and experience an entirely different landscape.

This striking national park in Utah is famed for being home to the most extensive collection of hoodoos in the world, but due to its location in the desert, summers tend to get scorching hot and winters particularly cold, making fall an ideal time to visit for bearable temperatures.

While there aren’t any fall-themed activities during the season, fall offers a wonderful chance to explore some of Bryce Canyon’s most famous parts without the hordes of crowds, but before the frostiest days of winter.

9. Grand Canyon National Park

Location: Arizona

With the summer crowds dwindling at the beginning of September, fall is a beautiful time of the year to visit the United States’ most iconic national park.

Not only will you see one of the country’s most internationally recognized natural landscapes without so many people around, but fall means crisp air and much more comfortable temperatures for hiking.

Even though the Grand Canyon isn’t exactly a destination for foliage, if you want to add that to your itinerary, the North Rim section of the park has plenty of patches of golden aspens.

10. Glacier National Park

Location: Montana

Home to vast glaciers and over 1 million acres of striking scenery that bursts to life this time of the year with glorious hues of gold, visiting Glacier National Park during the fall is magical.

You’ll be treated to views of jagged peaks, mild meadows, and cascading waterfalls here. As if that weren’t enough, wildlife encounters are more common during the fall season when crowds are gone and temperatures are mild, so you’ll get to spot different species like bears, hawks, and golden eagles.

Fall foliage at Glacier National Park varies. On the park’s western side, trees start changing color around mid-September, while those on the east do so more towards the beginning of October.

Some of the best things to do at Glacier National Park during the fall include wildlife viewing, floating over the North and Middle Forks of the Flathead River when water is running slow, and driving the most scenic road in Montana, Going-to-the-Sun road.

Entrance Fee: $35 per private vehicle, valid seven days (Winter rate $25 from 1 November to 30 April)

Seasonal Closures: The park is open year-round. A timed entry system operates at Glacier National Park until September 8. Many parts of the park may be affected by road closures by late fall and campgrounds close for winter, so please time this into your fall road trip in Montana.

You can combine a trip to Glacier NP in the Fall with a drive into Canada through to beautiful Banff. This is the ideal way to combine some of the best of Canadian Fall colors in Alberta and stunning Kootenay National Park, B.C., too.

Tourists and locals alike love taking scenic drives to enjoy the amazing views of Washington. The problem is, with all of the wonderful options, it can be hard to know where to start.

This guide will highlight some of the most beautiful routes in the Evergreen State, from winding mountain roads to coastal highways, the Pacific Northwest is abundant in natural beauty.

Whether you’re looking for a relaxing drive through winding mountain roads or a heart-pounding journey along the rugged coast, here are some of the best scenic drives in the state of Washington.

Best Scenic Drives in Washington

North Cascades Scenic Highway (Highway 20)

• Distance: 132 miles
• Time Needed: 3 hours to full day (return)

The North Cascades Scenic Highway passes through some of the state’s most beautiful mountain scenery. Enjoy towering peaks, pristine old-growth forests, and cascading waterfalls.

Depending on the snowfall, the highway typically opens in late May or early June. During the winter months, it’s closed due to heavy snowfalls and avalanche danger. However, if you’re willing to brave the elements, you can still access the highway via snowmobile or cross-country skiing.

There are plenty of opportunities to stop and enjoy the views along Highway 20, with numerous pull-offs and hiking trails. Take a hike in one of the country’s least visited national parks, the North Cascades National Park, go whitewater rafting on the Methow River, or stop and check out Diablo Dam.

Outdoor enthusiasts will be hard-pressed not to call in sick for work in order to indulge in some of the best camping and fishing in the state.

You can also find several small towns with charming cafes and shops along the way. Winthrop is a particularly popular stop, with its western-themed main street straight out of a movie set.

Stevens Pass Greenway Scenic Byway (Highway 2)

• Distance: 240 miles (return)
• Time needed: 6 hours to 2-3 days

This scenic byway, which follows the old Milwaukee Road railway route, takes you through the Cascade Mountains. The Stevens Pass Greenway Scenic Byway (also known as Highway 2) is a beautiful drive any time of year, but it’s especially stunning in the fall when the leaves are changing color.

From Seattle, the byway winds its way along the Skykomish River, past waterfalls and towering peaks, before descending into the valley below.

There are plenty of things to do along the way, including hiking, biking, fishing, and picnicking. Stop by Al Borlin Park to splash in the Skykomish River and watch bald eagles in their natural habitat. Don’t miss Wallace Falls State Park to see one of the largest waterfalls on the byway.

Continue your drive, and you’ll eventually reach the small town of Index. Here, you can grab a bite to eat or embark on a whitewater rafting adventure.

The route includes a section of the Pacific Crest Trail, so keep your eyes peeled for hikers as you enjoy the scenery.

Olympic Peninsula Loop (Highway 101)

• Distance: 349 miles (+ side trips)
• Time needed: 12 hours to 7 days

The Olympic Peninsula Loop takes you through some of the most diverse scenery in Washington, from rainforests to sandy beaches to rocky coastlines. The loop is over 300 miles long, so it’s best to break it up into sections and take your time enjoying all there is to see.

The loop can be driven in either direction, but clockwise is generally considered to be more scenic.

Some highlights of the loop include the temperate rainforest of the Hoh River Valley, where you can hike among towering trees and listen to the sound of cascading waterfalls.

Fans of the popular Twilight series will want to include a stop in Forks, the real-life town that served as the setting for the books and movies. Enjoy a (refreshing!) swim in Lake Crescent’s pristine waters after a hike up Hurricane Ridge in Olympic National Park for breathtaking views of the mountains and valleys below.

As you make your way along the peninsula’s rugged coastline, watch for wildlife such as bald eagles, seals, whales, and even orcas. Stop at one of the many state parks or beaches for a picnic lunch with a view.

Palouse Scenic Byway (Highway 195)

• Distance: 126 miles
• Time needed: 3 hours to full day

This scenic byway takes you through some of Washington’s most beautiful farmland, with rolling hills and fields of grain as far as the eye can see.

The Palouse Scenic Byway is a great place to take a drive any time of year, but it’s especially stunning in the spring when the fields are blanketed with wildflowers.

The byway winds its way through small towns and countryside, allowing you to explore at your own pace. Stop in at one of the small-town cafes for a bite to eat, browse the local shops or sample a glass from Palouse Winery.

Take a detour off the beaten path and explore one of the many hiking trails or fishing spots. If you’re feeling adventurous, Palouse Falls State Park has 94 acres of hiking and birdwatching. Steptoe Butte State Park is another worthy stop for exceptional views.

San Juan Islands Scenic Byway

• Distance: 36 miles (+Ferry)
• Time needed: 1 day

This scenic byway will take you through Washington’s San Juan Islands, a beautiful archipelago in the Salish Sea. It’s a great way to see the islands and understand their unique character.

The byway is about 36 miles long and is separated into three segments. The route takes you through Washington State Ferries, San Juan Island, and Orcas Island.

Orcas Island is home to Mount Constitution, the highest point in the San Juans. From the summit, you’ll get incredible sweeping views of the islands, the mountains, and the sea. Moran State Park has five swimmable lakes and over 30 miles of hiking trails, perfect for a day of exploring.

Don’t forget to spend some time in Eastsound, the island’s main town. There are restaurants, shops, galleries, and more to explore. Be sure to check out the farmers market on Saturdays!

San Juan Island is the smallest of the three islands, but it’s home to the British and American Camps, two areas that were occupied during the Pig War in 1859. The camps are now part of San Juan Island National Historical Park and offer hiking trails, beachcombing, and picnicking opportunities.

You can also take a whale-watching tour or go kayaking in search of orcas.

If you have some extra time, Lopez Island is known for its quaint small-town charm and is definitely worth a visit. Hike up Mt. Bakken for incredible views of the island and beyond, bike around Lopez Village for a leisurely way to see the sights, or kayak out to Shark Reef for an up-close look at the local wildlife.

Fishing is also a popular pastime on Lopez Island, so make sure to try your hand at catching some dinner.

Whidbey Island Scenic Isle Way

• Distance: 165 miles (+ ferry)
• Time needed: full day

This scenic route takes you around Washington’s Whidbey Island, a beautiful island with plenty of things to see and do. The drive is about 50 miles long and can be done in either direction.

Highlights of the drive include Deception Pass Bridge and State Park, where you can explore the dramatic cliffs and coastline, and Ebeys Landing National Historical Reserve, a great place for hiking, biking, and picnicking.

Be sure to stop in the charming town of Langley for lunch or to browse the shops. If you’re feeling adventurous, take a kayak around Double Bluff Beach for a chance to see some orcas.

Whidbey Island is well-known for its excellent seafood. However, visitors really come for the mussels from Penn Cove near Coupeville. The mussels are some of the best in the world and can be found at many of the island’s restaurants.

White Pass Scenic Byway (Highway 12)

• Distance: 394 miles (return)
• Time needed: Full day

The White Pass Scenic Byway is one of the most beautiful drives in Washington State. It takes you through the heart of Washington’s Cascade Mountains, with highlights including Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Rainier, and Mt. Adams.

Beginning in the town of Longmire in Mount Rainier National Park, the byway climbs nearly 3,000 feet in just 20 miles before reaching the summit at White Pass. Along the way, visitors are treated to spectacular views of Mt. Rainier, old-growth forests, alpine meadows, and mountain streams.

There are plenty of opportunities to stop and explore along the way. Hike through old-growth forests, go berry picking in the summer months, or enjoy a picnic lunch with a view. In the winter, the byway is popular for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

Be sure to take some time to explore the towns of Packwood and Randle, where you’ll find restaurants, shops, and friendly locals.

North Bend to Snoqualmie Pass (Interstate 90)

• Time needed: 2 hours to full day

North Bend to Snoqualmie Pass takes you through some of the most beautiful countryside in the state, from the rolling hills of the Snoqualmie Valley to the towering peaks of the Cascade Range.

The route is unique because of its diverse scenery, from forests to mountains to rivers, and along the way, you’ll pass by countless waterfalls, lakes, meadows, and glaciers. And if that’s not enough to take your breath away, the views of Mount Rainier and Mount Si will definitely do the trick.

There are also many places to stop and things to do along the way. For example, you can stop at the North Bend Visitor Center to learn about the history of the area or take a hike in the forests. Or pop into the tiny town of Roslyn, famous as the filming location for 90s comedy/drama Northern Exposure (yes, it was filmed in Washington, not Alaska!)

You can also visit the Snoqualmie Falls Visitor Center to see one of the most popular attractions in Washington. Along the way, you’ll also have the opportunity to see some of the state’s amazing wildlife, including eagles, deer, and elk.

A family guide to road tripping the Olympic Peninsula, Washington with the perfect Olympic National Park itinerary

When it comes to family-friendly national parks, Olympic National Park in Washington is undisputedly one of the best. Where else can you witness snow drifts in mountainous meadows, go boating on lowland lakes, enjoy stunning rainforest waterfall trails, finished with sunset on the beach, all in one day!?

The Olympic Peninsula in the Pacific Northwest is one of the most biodiverse locations in the world. The national park covers nearly one million acres, and is filled with fun and adventure for families who love the outdoors.

Now, to fit it in one day on a road trip would be a squeeze for any family itinerary. We do suggest you spend at a very minimum 3 to 5 days exploring the Olympic National Park and the entire Olympic Peninsula.

How To Get To The Olympic Peninsula

Olympic National Park is located west of Seattle in Washington state, in the Pacific North West of the USA.

The Olympic Peninsula is the mass of land across the Puget Sound from Seattle. It is surrounded by the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the north (separating the USA from Canada), the Hood Canal to the east, and the Pacific Ocean to the west.

The Olympic National Park covers 1,406 square miles of the Olympic Peninsula, along with the 70 miles of Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary. The remaining lands are largely made up of the Olympic National Forest and the Quinault Reservation.

To explore Olympic National Park to it’s fullest, you will need your own vehicle, and, of course, a National Parks pass.

Most will start their road trip journey to Olympic National Park by either flying into Seattle, or as part of a greater tour of Highway 101 and the West Coast.

Either way, Highway 101 is the main route you are heading for as it circumnavigates the entire National Park. Due to the mountainous terrain, there are no through routes in the park.

Seattle Airport to Olympic National Park

If you are picking up your vehicle from SEA airport or nearby, it takes at least 2 hours to drive around the Puget Sound, down I-5 before crossing to the Olympic Peninsula.

If your plan is to take the entire of Highway 101 along the east coast, you’ll pass Tacoma and Olympia before reaching the start of the 101. It is, however, a little quicker if you make the cut through State Route 16 after Tacoma, it will join you back to the 101 closer to Sequim.

Sequim or Port Angeles are where we recommend you start your Olympic National Park journey when coming from the east. Spend the night in either of these two towns stock up on supplies (you’ll want to BYO lunches etc.).

Just outside of Port Angeles is where you’ll find the Olympic National Park Visitor Center. Make sure you have your National Park Pass ready, as well as your junior ranger booklets, before under taking the itinerary we’re going to step you through below.

Ferry to the Olympic Peninsula

It is possible to also take the ferry from Seattle to the Olympic Peninsula. Depending on where you’re coming from in Seattle, or even if you are crossing from Canada, it can be the fastest route to Olympic National Park, cutting out a lot of freeway driving.

When taking your vehicle with you, the easiest choice is the Bainbridge Island ferry. From Bainbridge Island, it is a further 70-miles by road to Port Angeles.

From the north, another option to consider is the Edmonds-Kingston ferry to the Kitsap Peninsula.

Heading North Along Highway 101

Coming by road on the 101 from the south, the lower entry point to the Olympic National Park, Lake Quinault is about 2.5 hours (120 miles) from Astoria, Oregon.

You’ll cross the stunning Astoria-Megler Bridge then can decide if you’ll take the 101 all the way, or a a slightly faster route is to take State Route 401/4 via Knappton/Naselle.

Aberdeen is your last sizeable town to pick up supplies if you are starting your Olympic National Park journey from the south.

Getting Around Olympic National Park

As we mentioned above, there’s no through route, you’ll be following Highway 101 and making turn offs throughout your journey.

Theoretically, you can make a lap of the park and a few stops within a day, but honestly, why rush it?

The beauty of exploring Olympic National Park is to get out on foot and explore, so do factor in how long each highway turn off point takes, as well as trail lengths at each stop when working out how much you can fit in each day.

We’d recommend choosing a couple of different points to base yourself if you are only planning a short 3 to 5-day trip, ideally positioning yourself somewhere in the north for a couple of nights and somewhere east for best access to key points. More on where to stay below!

Traveling with an electric vehicle? You’ll find several EV charging points at lodges around the national park and in several of the larger towns on the Olympic Peninsula.

Indicative Driving Distances in Olympic National Park

To work out how much you can fit in a day, this will give you an idea how far it is between key attractions and accommodation towns in Olympic National Park and accommodation:

• Port Angeles to Hurricane Ridge – 20 miles (40 minutes – windy, mountainous driving)
• Port Angeles to Lake Crescent – 22 miles (27 minutes)
• Port Angeles to Sol Duc – 43 miles (1 hour)
• Port Angeles to Forks – 56 miles (1 hour 5 minutes)
• Lake Crescent to La Push – 47 miles (55 minutes)
• Lake Crescent to Hoh Rainforest – 66 miles (1 hour 30 minutes)
• Sol Duc to Forks – 40 miles (52 minutes)
• Forks to La Push – 15 miles (21 minutes)
• Forks to Hoh Rainforest – 31 miles (48 minutes)
• Forks to Ruby Beach – 27 miles (33 minutes)
• Hoh Rainforest to Ruby Beach – 32 miles (48 minutes)
• Ruby Beach to Quinault Rainforest – 42 miles (50 minutes)
• Hoh Rainforest to Quinault Rainforest -73 miles (1 hour 40 minutes)

NB timings are indicative only and do not take into account queues and road works, both highly possible around the entire Olympic Peninsula and Olympic National Park!

The Best Time to Visit Olympic Peninsula

Summer is the best season to visit Olympic National Park, although don’t discount visiting in the off season too. Some roads are closed seasonally, but most of the park is accessible year round.

An Olympic Peninsula tour in the early fall can be ideal, too, especially if you want to experience the colorful forests. Visit from mid to late October if you want to see the Roosevelt elk when it’s most active or the fall foliage.

During winter, the temperature at sea level hardly gets below freezing point. In the mountains, it’s rarely above 30°F. You can tour Hurricane Ridge, which is family-friendly and adventure-packed during the cold season with tubing, snowshoeing and other winter sports on offer.

Olympic National Park Itinerary – 5 Days

It doesn’t matter if you approach the park in a clockwise or anti-clockwise direction, or start from the top or the bottom.

We are assuming a Seattle start point for this Olympic National Park itinerary and taking things at a relatively easy pace over 5 days in an anti-clockwise direction. You’ll just need to rejig the itinerary below to suit your direction of travel and number of days.

We’ve also assumed you are travelling during the warmer months of summer. Not everything we mention below will be possible during winter.

Day 1 – Olympic National Park Itinerary

Starting with arrival day, this is all about getting your bearings on the Olympic Peninsula – a scenic ferry across Puget Sound is the perfect way to start your journey to another land!

The Visitor Centre in Port Angeles is open from 9:00AM to 4:00PM – grab your National Parks Pass and Junior Ranger Booklets. Get acquainted with all the walks and trails, confirm weather conditions and any trail closures.

If your timings permit, your first stop is tackling the Hurricane Ridge drive straight away on day 1 or hold this over for early on day 2. From the Port Angeles Visitors Centre, allow 40 minutes – depending on traffic conditions to reach the Hurricane Ridge Visitor Center.

From here, on a clear day enjoy spectacular mountain views of Mount Olympus to the south and over to Juan de Fuca and Victoria, Canada to the north. Several short trails suitable for all ages take you through the mountainous meadows – often still shrouded in snowdrifts right into the summer months.

Little animal lovers are in for a treat here as the mountains are rich in opportunities for wildlife spotting, including black bears, massive elk, Blacktail deer and mountain goats. Don’t worry, you’re unlikely to have too many close encounters unless you’re hitting the backcountry, but there are plenty of smaller critters, too, such as voles, moles, squirrels and chipmunks.

During the winter season, the road is scheduled to be open Friday through Sunday and holiday Mondays for vehicles carrying tire chains only. Check the road status beforehand (360) 565-3131.

If you’re short on time and just want a brief introduction to the park and the area day 1, there’s a very short hike to Madison Falls waterfall near Port Angeles, a very easy grade trail.

Exploring close to town and around Port Angeles, the Dungeness Wildlife Refuge on Dungeness Spit is a great bird spotting spot on opportunity to stretch the legs. Families will enjoy an evening stroll on the ODT (Olympic Discovery Trail), or hire an electric scooter, taking advantage of the long summer evenings in PNW.

If you didn’t arrive by water, you may also want to allow a half day in your Olympic Peninsula itinerary to head out into Puget Sound for a whale watching tour if you’re there at the right time of year.

Fuel up on food and supplies in Port Angeles for the next few days in the national park.

Day 2 – Olympic National Park Itinerary

If you didn’t have much time to tackle Hurricane Ridge day 1, you could make an early start day 2. In the summer months, it’s open 24 hours, so you can make the most of daylight hours and beat the string of cars that come after the visitor center opens or direct from Seattle for the day.

The short trail to Sunrise Point can be an awesome way to start your day in Olympic National Park.

Next, we’re going to head west towards Lake Crescent, one of the most easily accessible stops as it’s immediately off the 101. You can easily spend half a day at the lake and tackling the surrounding trails.

There are also rowboats and kayaks for hire if you want to explore the lake itself.

Marymere Falls trail is popular for families to take from here. It is flat for the most part with the only elevation gain at the end to view the falls. Plentiful picnic grounds here make it an idea lunch stop. This area is very popular into the fall too as one of the state’s top fall foliage spots!

Next up, drive onward to Sol Duc. If you’re interested in taking a dip in the hot springs, they’re open daily from 9:00AM to 8:00PM. Do be warned, the springs are mother nature at work, so they come with their own, ah, unique smell! This may put some reluctant bathers completely off but certainly a unique experience!

Alternatively, the Sol Duc Falls are another moderate hiking option at the end of this road that most little legs should be able to tackle. You can head to Salmon Cascades and turn back if they’re struggling or all the way to the impressive falls.

NB – since COVID the hot spring works on a timed basis only, you must come in person, first come first served on a daily basis. Pool access fees are $15 for adults, $12 for children ages 4-12 and $12 for seniors over 62 years old.

Spend the night either back at Sol Duc campgrounds or the Sol Duc Resort, Lake Crescent or double back to Port Angeles. Alternatively, head onward to your next adventure along the coast.

In the summer months you can still easily squeeze in a sunset trip to the beach by evening on Day 2 then stay overnight in Forks.

Day 3 – Olympic National Park Itinerary

Today we’re going to tackle temperate rainforests and beaches.

The order in which you do this may be tide dependent. Low tide at most Olympic Peninsula beaches will offer the best opportunities for exploring coastal tide pools, high tide can make certain beaches inaccessible. Don’t be mistaken into thinking you’re going for a beach swim though – even mid summer the Pacific Ocean waters can be icy cold!!

There are plenty of beaches you can explore along the Pacific Ocean coastline. They do range in challenge in terms of accessibility though, so it’s best to pick out a selection of beaches rather than visit them all. There’s a good guide here to the best Olympic beaches to visit with kids.

If you’re stretched for time we’d suggest just Rialto Beach or La Push Beach One near Forks, and then Ruby Beach further south for two different coastal experiences.

Whichever beach or beaches you choose, you’re bound to be spoilt with incredible driftwoods along with spectacular and dramatic cliffs, sea stacks and an abundancy of marine life.

The coast offers opportunities to spot sea otters, dolphins, grey whales, sea eagles and in the rock pools, you’ll almost certainly discover crabs, starfish and sea urchins.

Next up, we’re heading inland to Hoh Rainforest. We’d suggest heading here first in the summer months if timings do work. The queues do grow throughout the day, and if parking lot is full, they’ll stop letting cars in for a period.

This is among one of the few places where you’ll find temperate rainforests in the U.S, complete with dripping moss and massive ferns.

There’s a good choice of trails here to pick for your families hiking capabilities, the Hall of Moses Loop and Spruce Nature Trail are easy going. For older kids you should be able to manage at least part of the Hoh River Trail, 2.5 miles will take you to the spectacular Mineral Creek Falls.

Hoh is a gorgeous spot to camp if you’re lucky enough to have nabbed a spot, the Hoh Rain Forest Visitor Center is excellent, with an active ranger program run by the National Park Service for kids.

Alternatively, head onward to Kalaloch Beach on the coast, perfect if you love being right next to the crashing waves with the beach access right on your doorstep! You can also head back to Forks for the night if you’d prefer motel style accommodation.

Day 4 – Olympic National Park Itinerary

Today, we’re exploring around the southwestern corner of the Olympic National Park and Olympic National Forest. The Quinault Valley offers a scenic loop drive and short hikes through temperate rain forests and around Quinault Lake.

If you want a more secluded spot during your visit, then this is the part of the park for you – but still, in the summer months, we’d recommend getting in early – not just to beat the crowds but because this is when it’s at it’s most beautiful!

The Quinault rainforest has some of the largest Sitka spruce, western red cedar, hemlock, and Douglas Fir trees. The Quinault Rainforest Nature Loop here is an easy hike of just 0.5 miles on flat terrain making it good for kids.

You can also try Big Cedar Trail and the Trail of the Giants if you want to extend your experience.

If you have longer to spend, you can also go swimming, boating, and fishing around the lake. Stay overnight at either one of the campgrounds or historic and rustic Lake Quinault Lodge.

Day 5 – Olympic National Park Itinerary

We’re heading onwards now to the see the less-explored side of the park, Staircase.

It takes approximately 2 hours to get from Lake Quinault around to the park’s eastern side and Staircase ranger station (manned in summer); there’s no through road here. (Likewise, you’re looking at about 2 hours from Port Angeles if tackling things in the other direction). Remote but worth it if you love the solitude when exploring outdoors – less than 1% of the parks visitors make it this far!

Staircase Rapids is a beautiful loop trail that will suit your older kids and more confident hikers. Arguably the prettiest in the park, this hidden gem travels though old-growth forests and across a gorgeous cable bridge, following alongside the Skokomish River.

Lake Cushman also offers kayaking, canoeing, and SUP, with fewer crowds than Lake Crescent.

From the eastern side of the Olympic National Park it is under 2 hours return to end your 5 day Olympic Peninsula Road trip back in Seattle.

A Shorter Olympic National Park Itinerary

Only got 3 days? Look to make some earlier starts and take some shorter trails, this itinerary can easily be packed into a shorter time frame, why not try:

• Day 1 – Hurricane Ridge, Lake Crescent, Sol Duc
• Day 2 – La Push/Rialto Beach, Hoh Rainforest, Ruby Beach
• Day 3 – Kalaloch, Quinault Forest, Lake Quinault

With only 4 days we’d drop the eastern most part of the park and head back to Seattle after visiting Quinault Valley.

Lodgings in Olympic National Park

The Olympic Peninsula offers the lot but if you have any strong preferences BOOK EARLY!

Many options, particularly popular campsites and lodges within the national park, will book out months in advance. DO expect even motor inns and motels to be fully booked in the peak of summer; we’d not turn up on spec in the Olympic Peninsula.

Olympic National Park Lodges 

One of the best ways to experience Olympic National Park if you love having accommodation with full amenities is to stay at a lodge. The three main lodges to choose from attached to the Olympic National Park are Lake Quinault, Kalaloch, and Lake Crescent Lodge.

Lake Crescent Lodge

The best place to base yourself for exploring the northern highlight of Olympic National Park. The historic Lake Crescent Lodge offers spectacular waterfront and mountain views. For year-round enjoyment, the various accommodation choices from lodge rooms to cottages and cozy fireplace cabins.

It would be our top pick for families both for amenities and the choice of accommodation.

Kalaloch Lodge

Situated on the southern coastal area, be preferred for an authentic Pacific Coast experience! Kalaloch Lodge offers rooms with incredible forest views, as well as seafront cabins and Seacrest House for an incredible oceanside experience.

Lake Quinault Lodge

If you’re looking for a classic national park lodge experience in nature, Lake Quinault Lodge will deliver on the tranquility and breathtaking scenery you desire with a lakefront setting.

Remember, lodges are not the same as luxury hotels! National park lodges are designed to help you connect with nature; there are no televisions and possible no cell service. Rooms do not come equipped with extras like microwaves and self-catering facilities, so you will also need meal reservations at the onsite restaurants.

Camping Olympic National Park

Camping in Olympic National Park is an incredible experience with the kids. Yes, weather in PNW can often disagree with your best laid plans, but do try it!

• Most campsites are unpowered but will provide access to bathroom facilities and potable water.
• Be aware of the need to book and pay well in advance.
• First come, first serve only operates at quiet off-peak season times.
• Peak bookings are only released six months in advance on a rolling basis.
• Sites open between approximately March and June for the summer season (i.e. you need to start looking at booking slots from September to December the year before)

Hoh Rainforest Campground

One of the most beautiful family camp sites in Olympic National Park, inclusive of a superb evening ranger program. The summer season here is short so the 72 sites here get snapped up fast. Each site is equipped with a fire pit and picnic table. Regular sites $24USD/night, group sites $48USD/night.

Mora Campground

This popular beachside campground is close to both Rialto Beach and La Push with 94 sites. All sites are unpowered with fire pit and picnic table, note the RV dump only operates in summer (with additional charge). Regular sites $24USD/night, group sites $48USD/night.

Kalaloch Campground

Another good coastal option for families. This large campground has 168 unpowered campsites spread along the cliffs and beachfront. Advance reservations are a must in summer, whilst off-peak they run a first-come basis (some loops may be closed as inaccessible in winter). RV dump operates at a fee. RV & standard sites $24USD/night, group sites $48USD/night.

Falls Creek Campground

This campground is located on the shores of Lake Quinault, and it has 31 unpowered campsites. Bookings are open from May to mid-September. All sites here are unpowered $25USD/night.

Willaby Campground

Another sort-after option along Lake Quinault with only 21 campsites. There’s a slightly longer season here than other campsite from April to October, RV’s only up to 16ft. All sites here are unpowered, $25USD/night.

For backpackers, there are also several more walk-in only campgrounds around the park which you can check out here. Note if you are hiking into backcountry you’ll need a permit.

RV Campgrounds

If you are traveling with a larger RV or motorhome, or prefer more facilities than you get at an unpowered campsite you’ll also want to check out:

Sol Duc Hot Springs RV & Campground

With 82 tent camping sites and 17 RV camping sites (water/electric hookup), this campground sits just a quarter-mile from Sol Duc Hot Springs Resort. The season here runs from mid-April to the end of October. Camping off-peak is permitted, but you may not have water & power.

The resort facilities include hot springs pools and swimming pools, onsite massage (additional charges), restaurant, poolside deli and gift shop.

Log Cabin RV & Campground

Another option on the shores of Lake Crescent, offering a choice of rustic cabins, powered and unpowered sites. These sites can only be booked by phone – 888.896.3818.

Dump stations can be found at Fairholme, Kalaloch, Mora and Sol Duc campgrounds

Motor Inns, Motels & Hotels Around the Olympic Peninsula

Surrounding Olympic National Park, there are several small towns offering family lodgings.

Forks Accommodation

The only town of any real size on the western side of Olympic National Park is Forks, 15 minutes off the coast. You’ll be able to stock up on supplies here and find reasonably priced basic motel accommodation. We recommend:

Woodland Inns – each room includes a kitchen and living area, accommodating up to 6
Forks Motel – includes laundry facilities & heated pool, offers double rooms that can fit up to 5
Pacific Inn Motel – larger doubles for families that can fit up to – even Twilight decorated rooms!

• Olympic National Park Annual Pass – $55
• America the Beautiful Annual Pass (all national parks) – $80
• Every Kids Outdoors (4th Grader Pass) – Free

Camping permits cost extra as outlined above $15 – $24 per night.

You can pay at several gated entrances to the National Park, at one of the visitor centers, or order your annual passes in advance – America the Beautiful is a must for a US Road Trip!

We recommend having your passes ready before arriving to save entry time. Whilst there is no timed entry permit required to enter like other busy national parks, in the summer peak long queues can be experienced at Hurricane Ridge and Hoh Rainforest.

There’s no doubt about it – the Oregon Coast has just about the most gorgeous shoreline in the country. So, it’s no wonder that taking an Oregon Coast vacation by driving the Pacific Coast Highway is an excellent idea. 

But if you’re concerned about making the trip with kids, you’re in luck! There are tons of things to do on the Oregon coast with kids.

We’ve compiled a list of 12 different stops with dozens of activities perfect for driving the Oregon Coast with kids. From wildlife viewing to sand surfing, this list has everything to fill your Oregon Coast drive itinerary.

12 Best Stops on an Oregon Coast Road Trip With Kids  

1. Astoria

There’s no better place to start your epic Oregon Coast vacation than Astoria. As the first town in the state, it holds great historical significance. But more importantly, it’s the perfect place to visit with kids.  

Go for a ride on the Astoria Riverfront Trolley. Everyone in the family will love riding the historic trolley along the southern bank of the Columbia River. It’s only $1 to board and travels about 3 miles. 

A totally different way to see the city is to climb The Astoria Column. Modeled after the historic Trajan’s Column in Rome, the Astoria Column was built in 1926, showing images of Astoria’s history. Today, you can climb all 164 steps to get a 360-degree view high above it all. Visiting and climbing the column is free, but you will need to pay for parking.

Both Fort Clatsop National Monument and Lewis and Clark National Historical Park are great ways to bring history books to life. Kids will love walking around the encampment that Lewis and Clark established when they reached the west coast. 

There’s no better place in Oregon for kids than the Columbia River Maritime Museum. They’ll love learning all about seafaring vessels and shipwrecks in particular. It’s only $5 for kids and free for those 5 and under.

Pro Tip: Kids and kids-at-heart who love the 80s movie The Goonies, consider visiting in early June. Astoria (the setting of the film) celebrates Goonies Day each June 7th with special events and even a showing of the movie in the Columbian Theatre– a super cool activity to do with your kids on the Oregon Coastal road trip.

2. Warrenton

Okay, so Warrenton is super close to Astoria (just across Youngs Bay to the west), but it’s such a great place that we had to give it its own spot on this list of things to do when driving the Oregon Coast with kids. 

A must-do in Warrenton is visiting Fort Stevens State Park. Kids and adults will love checking out a real shipwreck Wreck of the Peter Iredale, walking the beach, hiking any of the 15 miles of trails, checking out Historic For Stevens, and kayaking in the Trestle Bay. 

For family fun that gets your blood pumping, head to High Life Zipline Park. You’ll be soaring through the trees – a completely different way to appreciate the Oregon Coast with kids.

Pro Tip: Fort Stevens Park offers year-round camping, including RV hookups, making it the ideal place to stay on your Oregon Coastal road trip.

3. Seaside

Heading down the Oregon Coast, the next no-brainer stop is Seaside. It’s just over 12 miles south of Warrenton, making it a short drive down the Oregon Coastal Highway.

Seaside is one of the best places to find things to do on the Oregon coast with kids. Catering to families, you’ll find tons of restaurants, ice cream shops, and arcades. Don’t miss walking the Seaside Promenade, riding the carousel, and visiting the Seaside Aquarium. 

Pro Tip:  Since it’s so close to Warrenton, you could choose to stay in either place and easily visit the other. As a major destination, you’ll find tons of places to stay in Seaside, like Seaside Thousand Trails.

4. Cannon Beach

On the road again, the next stop on this epic Oregon Coast road trip, Cannon Beach, is only 8 miles down the coast from Seaside and one of the best places to visit on the Oregon Coast.

With its iconic Haystack Rock and Sea Stacks on the shoreline, you’ll recognize this special place right away. Maybe the kids won’t recognize it from movies like The Goonies and Kindergarten Cop, but the grownups definitely will. 

Make sure to visit the beach during low tide. It’s the best time to walk out to the rock and see it up close. Kids will love finding sea creatures in the tidepools, too. Keep an eye out for puffins that call Haystack Rock home during the spring and summer months. No wonder Cannon Beach is one of the best Oregon beaches for families. 

Just north of Cannon Beach is Ecola State Park, one of the best places to visit on the Oregon Coast. Running along the shore for 9 miles, the park has tons of hiking trails with beautiful views of the Pacific.

5. Manzanita

Heading south from Cannon Bay on the 101, you’ll be in two more of the beautiful state parks that line the Oregon coastline: Arcadia Beach State Recreation Site and Oswald West State Park.

Arcadia is the perfect place to have a picnic, walk along the beach, and go tide-pooling. Unlike its neighbor up the Oregon coastline, Oswald West feels a bit more like you’re on an adventure, walking through a temperate rainforest and onto a secluded beach. 

Once you’ve enjoyed the parks, it’s on to Manzanita and Nehalem Bay. Seven miles of sandy beach means there’s tons of beachcombing to do.

6. Tillamook

Heading inland just slightly, a great place to spend some time on the Oregon Coast drive with kids is Tillamook. 

Visiting the Tillamook Air Museum is a great activity for families with little ones who like planes. 

For some of the most delicious ice cream and cheese, make sure to spend some time in the House that Cheddar Built – Tillamook Creamery. Your taste buds will thank you.

If you’re planning to drive the Oregon Coast in the fall, definitely visit The Hydrangea Ranch. There’s plenty of harvest fun where you can pick a pumpkin from the patch, go on a hay ride, and get lost in the largest corn maze in Oregon. 

Another super cool thing to do is to take the kids on the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad. Now you won’t be traveling the entire Oregon coastline, but a 90 minute ride on a historic steam engine could be the ride of a lifetime for your family.

Pro Tip:  If you’re a family that loves exploring the beach, then you’ll love Oceanside just to the west of Tillamook. The best place to head is the Oceanside Beach State Recreation Site.

7. Neskowin Beach

On the way to the next stop of Neskowin Beach, make sure to stop at Cape Kiwanda Sand Dunes in Pacific City. Here, you’ll love climbing to the top of the enormous dune for a gorgeous coastline view. You may even spot historic Dory fishing boats in the water. If you’re driving the Oregon Coast with kids in July, check out Dory Days Festival Weekend.

The next must-stop on the Pacific Coast Highway is Neskowin Beach. Specifically, Neskowin Ghost Forest is a super cool place to visit if you’re into things that are a bit more on the creepy side. The Ghost Forest are the trunks of ancient trees that were buried thousands of years ago and have only been brought to the surface in recent years. So, although this isn’t a spooky ghost story feel, it can be a great discussion topic for kids who are studying history and science. 

Neskowin Beach also has great tidepools and warmer water than others, making it one of the best beaches to visit the Oregon Coast with kids. 

Pro Tip:  Neskowin Beach RV Resort is a solid choice when looking for a place to stay in the area. They also have cabins to rent if you’re not making the Oregon Coast drive in a house on wheels.

8. Depoe Bay

One of the biggest draws of visitors to the Oregon coastline is whale watching. And there’s no better place to do it than in Depoe Bay.

Although it may be difficult for most of us to figure out which whales are in the area and which are on the move, the OPRD Whale Watching Center is ready to help. They’ll answer all of your questions and even help you spot the Grey, Humpback, or Orca. 

Don’t miss seeing the Devil’s Punch Bowl just south of Depoe Bay. The powerful sea smashing into the rocky coast created this amazing rock formation. It’s super cool to check out any time, but during the winter months, the agitated, energetic sea makes the bowl super active.  

Pro Tip: Remember to bring our binoculars.  If you forgot to bring your binoculars on your Oregon Coastal road trip, don’t worry! The Whale Watching Center has some to borrow.

9. Newport

About 133 miles from the start of the trip in Astoria, the next major stop on the Oregon Coast drive itinerary is Newport. 

The major claim to fame is that Newport is the home to the Oregon Coast Aquarium, a favorite among Oregon Coast vacations. The whole family will love learning about life under the sea and walking through underwater tunnels, giving a different perspective. Jellyfish and Octopus encounters are a super fun experience kids love but are an extra expense.

Lucky for us, the Oregon Coast Aquarium is open daily and offers discounts for seniors, young adults, and kids, and is free for 0-2 years old.

Beyond the aquarium, Newport is a great place to stop when driving the Oregon Coast with kids. You’ll definitely be drawn to the Bayfront with all of its places to eat and shop. It’s also a great place to see the local sea lions. Let the kids run, climb, and play at Coast Park, a large playground area. 

Pro Tip:  Just south of Newport is Seal Rock State Recreation Site, which is a great place to see rock formations, go tide-pooling, and see sea lions and seals.

10. Florence

Seeing the wildlife on the Oregon Coast is one of the biggest draws to vacationing here. But sometimes, it’s hard for kids to know where to look. A perfect solution is visiting the Sea Lion Caves. As they say, it’s not a zoo, but there’s a good chance of seeing sea lions. So, hey, why not check it out? 

If you have kids into fairies, gnomes, or enchanted forests, go for a hike on the Hobbit Trail in Florence. At the trail’s end, you’ll be on the secluded Hobbit Beach, but it feels like you’re journeying into a magical place along the Oregon Coast.

For a totally awesome experience when driving the Oregon Coast with kids, hit the dunes. Sandboarding is all the rage at Sand Masters Park. You and the kids can rent a board for the day or take a lesson to learn the moves. Either way, you’ll have a blast. They’re open all week April–December but only Thursday through Sunday in the off-season.

Pro Tip: Places in Florence are RV-friendly. Specifically, most places have enough parking for RVs, which is nice to see.

11. Siuslaw National Forest

Make sure to put Oregon Dunes National Recreation Center in the Siuslaw National Forest on your Oregon Coast drive itinerary. You’ll love all of the family-friendly activities within the park, like hiking the Sweet Creek Falls trail, which is only 1.1 miles but passes 11 waterfalls.

Kids and grownups alike can be Citizen Scientists in the park, too. The Agents of Discovery app is a whole new way for kids to engage with the nature around them in Cape Perpetua. Tahkenitch Area is the best place to go kayaking with kids, too. 

Just south of Siuslaw National Forest is Coos Bay, one of the largest towns on Oregon’s Coast. It’s nice to take a short stroll on the Coos Bay Boardwalk and learn about the town’s development and the importance of logging in the area.

Pro Tip:  Carter Lake Campground in the Oregon Dunes Recreation Area is a favorite place for families to camp.

12. Brookings

We’ve made it! After traveling 338 miles down the Pacific Coast Highway, the final destination on this Oregon Coast road trip with kids is family-friendly Brookings. It’s here that you’ll find a number of the best Southern Oregon Coast attractions. 

Azalea Park is a favorite destination with locals and visitors. Kids (and kids-at-heart) will love playing disc golf, horseshoes, and playing on the large playground. The gardens in Azalea Park are a delight and are celebrated with the Azalea Festival every Memorial Day Weekend. If you’re in Brookings in the summer, check out life music at the American Music Festival in the park. In winter, it’s all about Nature’s Coastal Holiday Festival of Lights. 

Don’t miss spending time in Harris Beach State Park. With tidepools, soft sands, and gorgeous views, it’s definitely one of the best Oregon beaches for families. 

The Port of Brookings Harbor Boardwalk is the best place to bring the kids for seafood dinners and ice cream desserts. During the summer and early fall, it’s also the home to Saturday Markets at the Port featuring vendors and live music.

Pro Tip:  Harris Beach State Park is the perfect place to stay the night when visiting the Southern Oregon Coast. With RV hookups, tent sites, and yurts, you’re likely to find a type of camping that’s right for you.

Distance from Seattle to Glacier National Park 

A road trip from Seattle to Glacier National Park will cover a total of 550 miles. You’ll travel through Washington and the Idaho panhandle on I-90E as the most direct route.

Then in Montana, you’ll head towards Glacier National Park first on MT135, then MT200, Mount Highway 28, and US 93. Seem a bit confusing? Just follow the signs towards Glacier West, and you’ll be fine.

For a more scenic drive from Seattle to Glacier National Park, consider heading north through the Idaho panhandle. Just after Spokane Valley, take US95N and US Highway/Route 2. It only adds about 45 mins more to your total trip but is totally worth the view.

How Long Is the Drive From Seattle to Glacier National Park? 

To drive straight from Seattle to Glacier National Park, you can expect to spend 9-10 hours on the road without stopping. But the truth is, if you’re going on a road trip, half the fun is the drive to get there, right? 

So instead, consider taking your time to make this Seattle to Glacier road trip. If you give yourself two or three days to get there, it will allow you to really enjoy the beauty of the Pacific Northwest. Your family will also really appreciate not being stuck in the car for so many hours at once.

Best Time of Year to Drive Seattle to Glacier National Park   

The best time of year to make this epic Seattle to Glacier National Park road trip is during the summer months. It’s when you’ll have sunshine and warmth, perfect for exploring the beautiful landscape of the Pacific Northwest.

During the summer months, you’ll find the most entrances to Glacier National Park open, which is ideal. It also means that the park sees the highest number of visitors during this time too. So, be sure to make reservations ahead.

Best Stops on a Seattle to Glacier National Park Road Trip   

Seattle, WA

We start this epic Glacier National Park road trip in the awesome city of Seattle. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, you’ll love spending at least a few days in this incredible town. It’s got everything from food to fun for everyone in the whole family. From little ones to big kids, there’s something for everyone in Seattle. 

Head indoors if the weather’s a bit iffy. Families with little ones will love the Children’s Museum. Kids of all ages will have fun at the Museum of Pop Culture (closed Wednesdays except in the summer), Seattle Aquarium, or the Pacific Science Center (closed Mondays and Tuesdays). 

When the sun is shining, play in the sand at the Golden Gardens Park and let the kids be kids at the Artists at Play Playground. 

Of course, no trip to Seattle is complete without a visit to the Space Needle and a stroll along Puget Sound on Alaskan Way. But once you’ve had your fill, it’s time to set off on your scenic drive through the Pacific Northwest and onto the Glacier National Park road trip.

Ellensburg, WA

Heading east on I-90, the first major stop on this Seattle to Glacier National Park road trip is Ellensburg. You’ll reach it in just about two hours, depending on traffic. Making it the perfect distance to get out and stretch your legs while exploring this great little town.

You’ll love strolling through town, checking out the cool murals and architecture. For a bit of history, stop in to the Kittitas County Historical Museum. 

Everyone in the family will enjoy a stroll in the Rinehart Riverfront Park. Or you could hike the Umtanum Creek Canyon Trail, which crosses the Yakima River on a cool suspension bridge.

One of the best events in the annual Ellensburg Rodeo. Known as the largest in the state of Washington and one of the best in the country, it takes place over Labor Day weekend. It’s a perfect stop on a late summer Glacier National Park road trip. 

Heading back on the road after Ellensburg, continue east on I-90 to Spokane.

Leavenworth, WA

If you want a cool Bavarian stop-off on your Seattle to Glacier road trip, then set the navigation for Leavenworth, WA. Depending on traffic, you’ll follow Route 2 out of the city for about two hours. As soon as you arrive in town, you’ll realize you’re in for some seriously good fun. 

The architecture of downtown Leavenworth will transport you to the great historic towns of Germany. You’ll love the whole look with the thatched roofs, wooden details of the buildings, and the mountains in the backdrop. But the experience doesn’t end there. 

Make sure to visit the Greater Leavenworth Museum. Here you’ll learn about the town’s German roots and history. You’ll even hear about great places you’ll want to visit after the museum. Don’t miss the Nutcracker Museum or the Leavenworth Reindeer Farm. You’ll find incredible German food and drink in Leavenworth too. A favorite is Rhein Haus. 

To get some exercise and excitement, go for a walk in Waterfront Park or get your adrenaline pumping on the Leavenworth Ziplines. Hiking the Icicle Gorge Trail is one of the best things to do in Leavenworth. 

It’s one of the most magical places to visit in the US around Christmas time!

Pro Tip: Leavenworth is a great place to spend the night on your Seattle to Glacier National Park road trip. If you’re camping or RVing, there are plenty of places to choose from, including the Icicle River RV Park and the Leavenworth/Pine Village KOA Holiday.

Wenatchee, WA

Wenatchee is just a short 30-minute drive down the road from Leavenworth. But it’s such a great place to spend some time. We just had to make it a stop on this Seattle to Glaciers National Park road trip. The truth is that if you don’t want to make two stops so close together, then pick one to do on the way to Glacier National Park and one to do on the way back. 

You’ll definitely want to shop around in Pybus Public Market. With the heart of a local market, you’ll find everything from local produce to works of art and even kid’s activities. There are also great places to grab a coffee, pastry, or even a full meal – perfect when you’re in the middle of your epic Seattle to Glacier road trip.

Wenatchee is well known for outdoor adventure. You can easily hike Saddle Rock, Apple Capital Loop Trail, Sage Hills, or take a stroll in Wenatchee Confluence State Park. 

Wenatchee has three great breweries downtown: Wenatchee Valley Brewing, Columbia Valley Brewing Co., and Badger Mountain Brewing. They all serve up great beers and meals to keep your whole family happy!

Spokane, WA

Spokane and neighboring Spokane Valley are a must-stop on any Seattle to National Glacier National Park road trip. It’s got just about everything you’re looking for in the perfect stop-over. No matter what route you take out of Seattle, you’ll get to Spokane in about three hours from either Ellensburg or Leavenworth/Wenatchee. 

Riverside, Spokane’s downtown, has plenty of places to eat and shop. Kids will love all the parks in Spokane, including those with playgrounds and skate parks.

Spokane’s Riverfront Park is a place you must visit when in town. You’ll love it all, from the restored Looff Carousel to the Numerica SkyRide and, of course, the view of Spokane Falls. The Mobius Discovery Center (open Wednesday-Sunday) is perfect for families who enjoy hands-on learning. 

To get the family into the beauty of nature, make a trip to Riverside State Park. With 55 miles of hiking and biking trails, there’s a lot of terrain to explore. The Centennial Trail, a Spokane favorite, runs along the Spokane River within the park too.  

Don’t miss exploring the nearby area of Spokane Valley. You’ll fall in love with the land, people, and things to do.

After Spokane, head east on Mount Highway 28 and US 93N to West Glacier and the entrance to Glacier National Park. 

Pro Tip: If you’re looking to take a bit more of the scenic drive through Washington to Glacier after Spokane, follow Route 95 to Route 2 instead. On this road, you’ll spend more time in the Idaho panhandle, passing through the Kaniksu and Kootenai National Forests and a bunch of charming mountain towns. On this route be sure to check out the swinging bridge at Kootenai Falls and the Conrad Mansion Museum in Kalispell, MT.

Flathead Lake, MT

Flathead Lake is something you just can’t miss on your road trip from Seattle to National Glacier National Park. The drive from Spokane will take about four hours, so it’s the perfect place to stop and relax for a day or two. This majestic lake is beautiful to see and a ton of fun to experience. 

Surrounding the lake are many great towns like Bigfork and Polson, ready to help you with everything from places to eat and sleep to water sports and boat rentals. During the summer, you’ll find awesome events like the Whitewater Festival and the Bigfork Festival of the Arts. 

Don’t miss visiting Wild Horse Island in Flathead Lake. It’s only accessible by water, but once you’re there, you’ll love to hike this beautiful state park. It’s also so awesome to catch a glimpse of the wild horses that call it home. 

A must-do is to learn more about the native people of the Flathead Lake area. Definitely make time to visit The Three Chiefs Culture Center (formerly The People’s Center), where you can learn about the Salish, Ksanka & Qlispe people.

Waterton Lakes National Park, Canada

The US side of Glacier National Park makes up half of the remarkable International Peace Park. The other half is the beautiful Waterton Lakes National Park in Canada. So, no Glacier National Park road trip is complete without visiting this sister park to the north. 

You can go hiking, relax with a picnic, or get out on the water on the beautiful mountain lakes. If you want to paddle, just make sure to get your watercraft inspected before you do. 

Admission fees to the park are charged per person. Adults are $10.50, and seniors are $9. Kids 17 and under are free.  

Pro Tip: Remember to bring your passport so you can easily cross the border into Canada and back again.

Pro Tip: If you’re looking to camp (including RVs) at Waterton Lakes National Park on your Seattle to Glacier National Park road trip, make sure to book a reservation on the reservations.pc.ca website in advance.

It’s important to note Canada has its own Glacier National Park located 6 hours north of the border in British Columbia. Don’t confuse it with Waterton Lakes National Park, which is adjacent to the US Glacier National Park!

Glacier National Park

Now onto the main event, your final destination on this Seattle to Glacier National Park road trip. Known as the Crown of the Continent, Glacier National Park is one of the absolute best parks in North America. With towering mountains, gorgeous glaciers, alpine meadows, valleys, and lakes, it’s no wonder it’s a major bucket list item. 

Coming from Flathead Lake or Kalispell, you’ll reach West Glacier and the park entrance in just under an hour. 

Definitely plan to drive the Going-to-the-Sun Road, which takes you clear across the park. You’ll also get to Logan Pass on the road, another must-do. Many Glaciers and Two Medicines are also ones to put on the itinerary.

One of the best things to do in Glacier National Park is to walk the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail. This path follows the natural border of the Great Continental Divide, separating watersheds that flow into the east and west. The views from this trail are incredible. 

It takes more than a day to fully experience Glacier. So camping (and RVing) is a great idea. There are several sites throughout the park that are first come by reservation.

Pro Tip: You’ll need both a vehicle reservation and a parking pass for Glacier National Park. Entrance passes for private cars are $25 from November 1 to April 30 and $35 from May 1 through October 31. Passes are valid for 7 days.

If you like adventure and water, you will want to visit the H20 Adventure and Fitness Centre in Kelowna or Wibit Water Park in Penticton, as these parks feature waterslides, splash pads, and interactive play areas that will keep kids cool and having fun! 

If you like swimming but don’t enjoy water parks, you can spend the day at the beach swimming and building sandcastles. The Okanagan is known for its beautiful sandy beaches. Some family-friendly beaches to check out include Rotary Beach in Kelowna and Skaha Lake Beach in Penticton.

The smaller lakes of the Okanagan are also great for boating adventures or scenic cruises, or pull on your boots and enjoy the hiking trails around Kelowna.

This remarkable Canadian City is located alongside the picturesque Howe Sound, a stunning fjord, and snow-capped mountains. It’s the perfect escape to enjoy outdoor adventure and a perfect midway stop if you continue onto Whistler.

Squamish offers an ideal location for a weekend outdoor adventure, and one of the must-do activities with kids is riding the Sea to Sky Gondola. The gondola ride takes approximately 10 minutes, and as you ascend, the views become increasingly beautiful and scenic.

Upon reaching the mountaintop, a short walk will lead you to a suspension bridge, providing another breathtaking vantage point of the mountains and the stunning waters below, including Shannon Falls, the third-largest waterfall in British Columbia. If you plan to hike or have a leisurely lunch, it is advisable to allocate at least 3 hours for this stop.

Stanley Park is the best park in Vancouver and has so many unique activities for kids and the whole family to enjoy. You can easily spend the entire day here, so why not pack a picnic lunch? Boeing Factory Tour

Located in Everett, Washington, just north of Seattle, is the Boeing Factory that manufactures commercial airplanes such as Boeing 747, 767, 777, and the 787 Dreamliner.

Get an up-close look at how some of the biggest planes are made during the tour. You will see the entire manufacturing process, including how the wings and landing gear are added. The tour also includes a visit to the Boeing Future of Flight Aviation Center, which features interactive exhibits on the history and future of flight, as well as a gift shop with aviation-themed souvenirs.

Children’s Museum of Skagit County

The Children’s Museum is designed for children from 1-12 and allows families to play and learn together as they explore interactive exhibits and educational programming, such as story time and art activities. 

Children can also engage in role-play and exploration as the museum has created replica community spaces such as a veterinary clinic, grocery store, construction zone, and water play area to allow children to pretend they are in those environments.

Samish Overlook and Oyster Dome

Oyster Dome and Samish Overlook are two popular yet different hiking spots near Bellingham. For an easy hike with outstanding views of Skagit Valley and the San Juan Valley, you will want to choose the Samish Overlook Trail.

Those who choose the more challenging hike that is suitable for intermediate hikers, the Oyster Dome hike, will be rewarded with panoramic views of Puget Sound and surrounding mountains. Samish Overlook is approximately 1.5 miles, while the Oyster Dome trail is 5.5 miles.

Bellingham

Located halfway between Seattle and Vancouver, this charming small town offers historic theater at the Mount Baker Theatre, restaurants, galleries, and shops in downtown Bellingham and much more. Fairhaven is a historic district nearby downtown that has more shops and galleries and is home to Boulevard Park, which is a waterfront park.

If you need to stretch your legs and have a short amount of time, Boulevard Park is the perfect location, as it has a walking path, beach access, and stunning views of Bellingham Bay and the San Juan Islands.

Whidbey Island

How Long Do I Need For The Vancouver To San Francisco Road Trip?

The distance from Vancouver to San Francisco is approximately 800 miles (1,285 kilometers) if taking the inland route on I-5. The journey takes about 16 hours of driving time, depending on how often you stop along the way and if you encounter any traffic. Be prepared that this route does include some tolls.

This drive is best split into 3 days of driving with 5 hours each day. This way, you can have plenty of time to explore lots of unique attractions along the route.

An alternate option is taking the longer coastal route on 101/Highway 1, allowing you to explore Olympic National Park, Oregon Coast, and the Redwoods.

US Highway 101, known as the Pacific Coast Highway, is one of the most scenic roads in the world. The route along the coastline is less busy than the shooter route. The coastal route takes up to 23 hours and is 1,165 miles (1,875 kilometers). 

We suggest you take 10-14 days to truly experience and explore the areas between Vancouver and San Francisco, as the worst feeling on a road trip is being rushed.

Best Time Of Year To Go From Vancouver To San Francisco by Car

Road trips can be quite an exciting journey, especially if you have nice weather, so the best time to visit the west coast of North America is in the Spring until Fall, so from May to October.

Be prepared that San Francisco and Vancouver often have rain, mist, and cooler temperatures than other parts of North America, even in the summer.

The best weather all year is in July-August; however, this is the high tourist season, so the cost of lodging and attractions are often much higher, and places are much busier. Unfortunately, June can often be gloomy, wet, and cool, with lots of fog, making it hard to see landmarks clearly.

If you have the flexibility in your schedule, early September is a great time to embark on a road trip along the US West Coast from Canada. This season boasts less traffic and delightful warm temperatures, making it an optimal travel period.

Olympic National Park, WA

Willapa National Wildlife Refuge

Kids will enjoy learning more about the history, ecology, and wildlife through educational programs and exhibits in the visitor center.

Located in Washington State, the goal of this wildlife refuge is to conserve habitats for the species located in the park. Willapa National Wildlife Refuge is over 16,000 acres in size and offers visitors a variety of recreation opportunities. While visiting the Wildlife Refuge you can enjoy wildlife sightings, bird watching, hiking, or fishing while enjoying the natural beauty of the area.

The Willapa National Wildlife Refuge property has several cultural and historic sites, including a World War II-era radar station and a historic lighthouse that dates back to 1858. Guided tours of the lighthouse are available during the summer months.

Long Beach

Plan to spend the day and enjoy the long stretches of sandy beaches that Long Beach has to offer to visitors. Located on the western edge of the Olympic Peninsula, Long Beach has fantastic swimming, sunbathing, and kite flying and even has many local stores to purchase kites.  This family-friendly destination has beaches, outdoor activities, museums, and much more to entertain the whole family.

Long Beach holds a yearly kite festival in August and is home to the World Kite Museum. The area is also popular for clam digging, especially if you’re looking for the famous razor clam.

Located nearby are several state parks, such as Cape Disappointment State Park and Lewis and Clark National Historical Park, which offer scenic views along hiking trails while learning about the area’s rich history.

Coos Bay

Located on the southern coast of Oregon, Coos Bay is a must-see spot for Pacific Northwest visitors as it offers many adventurous activities. You can learn more about the history and culture by visiting the Coos Historical and Maritime Museum, which explains the history of indigenous heritage and the past of fishing and timber industries in the area.

Siuslaw National Forest

Enjoy a journey through Siuslaw National Forest, which boasts 634,000 acres of forests, beaches, rivers, lakes, streams, sand dunes, tide pools, and ocean vistas along the Oregon coastline. There are numerous activities to enjoy in the Siuslaw National Forest, including hiking, cycling, camping, fishing, picnicking, horseback riding, off-roading, and more… making it an outdoor enthusiast’s dream location. 

This vast area is home to a variety of wildlife and features the highest peak in the Oregon Coast Range, Mary’s Peak, which stands at 4097 feet (1249 meters). This is a prominent feature in the Siuslaw National Forest, offering panoramic views of forest, mountains, and coastlines. 

Mary’s Peak has a variety of different trails for visitors to explore, from easy to advanced, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the view. At the summit of Mary’s Peak, there is a restroom, observation tower, and picnic tables allowing guests to take a rest and refuel for the trip back down.

Redwood National & State Parks, OR, WA

This is a must-see destination for nature lovers or those looking to enjoy the peaceful, quiet environment of the iconic redwood forest, home to some of the world’s tallest trees. Redwood National & State Parks is located on the north coast of California, has trees as large as 380 feet tall, and covers an area of almost 140,000 acres.

Visitors to the park will enjoy viewing wildlife, hiking through the forest, camping, and fishing.  Kids will enjoy checking out the Junior Ranger programs, campfire talks, and guided hikes offered by the visitor center. 

You will not want to miss checking out the narrow canyon with walls covered in ferns called Fern Canyon or visiting the largest redwoods in the park in the Lady Bird Johnson Grove.

Golden Gate Bridge
