2. Danvers State Hospital, Massachusetts

Danvers State Hospital, opened in 1878, was initially designed as a place of healing for the mentally ill. However, it soon became overcrowded and underfunded, leading to deteriorating conditions and controversial treatments.

The Gothic-style building, with its imposing facade and sprawling grounds, has long been a source of local ghost stories and urban legends. Some claim it inspired H.P. Lovecraft’s Arkham Sanatorium.

While the original building was largely demolished in 2007, the site still attracts curiosity seekers. During October, local historical societies often organize talks and walking tours of the grounds, discussing the hospital’s history and its impact on mental health care.

Nearby, the Rebecca Nurse Homestead (a victim of the Salem Witch Trials) offers candlelit tours and storytelling events. Families can also visit the nearby Endicott Park for fall festivals featuring pumpkin carving, hayrides, and spooky (but not too scary) storytelling sessions.

4. Burkittsville, Maryland (Blair Witch Project location)

Burkittsville gained unexpected fame as the setting for the 1999 horror film “The Blair Witch Project.” While the movie’s story was fictional, it drew on local legends and the area’s rich history. The town dates back to the 18th century and was the site of several Civil War battles.

In October, Burkittsville and the surrounding area celebrate their folkloric fame with several family-friendly events. The town often hosts a fall festival featuring local crafts, food, and historical reenactments.

Nearby South Mountain State Battlefield offers guided hikes that combine Civil War history with local ghost stories.

For a less spooky option, families can visit the numerous pick-your-own apple orchards and pumpkin patches in the area, many of which offer corn mazes and hayrides with a mild Halloween theme.

5. Eastern State Penitentiary, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Opened in 1829, Eastern State Penitentiary was one of the world’s most famous and expensive prisons. Its wagon-wheel design and emphasis on solitary confinement were revolutionary but controversial. The prison housed notorious criminals like Al Capone and bank robber Willie Sutton before closing in 1971.

During October, Eastern State Penitentiary transforms for Halloween Nights, one of the nation’s most prominent haunted attractions. Running five haunted house immersive experiences, there’s something here for all levels of thrill-factor, as well as historic tours, themed bars and live entertainment.

Daytime tours are available year-round, focusing on the prison’s architecture, famous inmates, and reform efforts. For Halloween, there are often special events like pumpkin carving contests, costume parades, and educational programs about the history of Halloween and how it was celebrated (or not) in prisons.

6. The Lizzie Borden House, Fall River, Massachusetts

On August 4, 1892, Andrew and Abby Borden were found brutally murdered in their Fall River home. Andrew’s daughter, Lizzie, was the prime suspect but was acquitted after a sensational trial. The case remains unsolved, sparking endless speculation and cementing Lizzie Borden’s place in American folklore.

The Borden House now operates as a bed and breakfast, allowing guests to stay in the very rooms where the murders took place. In October, the house offers special ghost tours and séances for those brave enough to participate.

For families, daytime tours focus more on the historical aspects of the case and life in 19th-century New England. The nearby Fall River Historical Society hosts Borden-related exhibits and fall-themed events suitable for all ages, including pumpkin decorating contests and historical reenactments of life in the 1890s.

There’s nothing quite like fall in New England. As the summer sun begins to fade, we begin to crave the feeling of crisp fall air, the tastes of freshly harvested apples, cranberries and pumpkins, and, of course, the beautiful fall foliage.

One of our favorite ways to experience this magical time of year is by taking a New England road trip. 

Typically, fall in New England runs from September 1st through late October. It’s during this time that you’ll find a number of family-friendly festivals celebrating the sights, sounds, and tastes of the season. It’s also when leaves change colors and create brilliant landscapes of yellow, orange, and red. 

Peak fall foliage generally takes place between the last weekend of September and Columbus Day. For specific information on locations and the changing of the colors check out foliage trackers like ExploreFall.com.

5 Day New England Fall Road Trip  

With Logan International Airport Boston being a big international hub airport, we have designed our New England road trip itinerary with this starting point. Next, you’ll head west to the Berkshires, up north through Vermont, and then east to the Acadia on the coast, by way of the White Mountains of New Hampshire. 

You can complete the drive from Bar Harbor back to Boston following this itinerary.

Since this trip is all about seeing the beauty of fall in New England, remember that leaves change earlier in the season, the further north and inland you are. So, if you’re visiting later in the fall, the suggestion would be to start in the north and work your way south. 

Day 1: Boston & Cape Cod, Massachusetts

There’s no better way to start an epic New England Road Trip than with a day in the great city of Boston. 

Fall is the perfect time of year to explore all the historic sites of this great city. Walk the Freedom Trail, stroll through Boston Commons, and check out the big ships in the harbor. If the weather is a little bit iffy, kids will love to visit the New England Aquarium and see all the underwater creatures. 

Boston is also a great home base to explore the surrounding area. Salem, Massachusetts, is a mere 30 minutes from downtown and has so much fun during the Halloween season. 

Driving south from the city, it’s easy to spend a day exploring Cape Cod as the fall colors change in the season. The whole family will love exploring the towns on the cape and walking along the sandy beaches. Don’t miss a visit to the Whydah Pirate Museum in West Yarmouth.

Fall on the Cape is tons of fun, with the Harwich Cranberry & Arts Festival in September and the Yarmouth Seaside Festival in October. Both are tons of fun for the family, with music, vendors, and fireworks.

Day 2: Berkshires, Massachusetts

In less than a three-hour drive west on I-90 it’s on to the second leg of this New England road trip, The Berkshires. Set in Western Massachusetts, this landscape is an escape into nature any time of year. But fall foliage transforms the area to be even more breathtaking.

Any New England road trip should plan for at least a day in the Berkshires. Here, it’s easy to fill your fall road trip itinerary with outdoor activities like hiking, biking, and even horseback riding.

In the fall, the whole family will love picking apples or pumpkins and sipping cider at places like Bartlett’s or Furnace Brook Winery at Hilltop Orchards. The Naumkeag Pumpkin Show in Stockbridge is a favorite with families throughout October.

The Berkshires are known for their excellent Farm-to-Table culture. They have wonderful restaurants and farmers’ markets. Towns like Pittsfield, Lenox, and Williamstown have excellent markets to explore through October. 

For outdoor adventures like ziplining and alpine sliding, head to Jiminy Peak or Berkshire Eastern Mountain Resort.

Pro Tip: The Berkshires are also the perfect place to camp. With dozens of campsites in the area, it’s easy to find the one for you, including RV hookups like at Fernwood Forest Campground. 

If you have a little longer in the state, Massachusetts also has a number of incredible scenic drives, including the Mohawk Trail in the Berkshires youcould add to this itinerary, time permitting. 

Day 3: Burlington, Vermont

Nothing quite compares to Vermont in the fall. The Green Mountains are picturesque as they change colors from green to brown, orange, and yellow. There’s no better way to enjoy the season than taking a New England fall road trip to Burlington with your family. 

The drive from the Berkshires to Burlington takes only about three and a half hours without stopping. But instead of rushing along, we recommend stopping off at Woodstock (VT, not NY) and Montpelier. Both are quintessential Vermont towns and are postcard-perfect in the fall.

An excellent family activity is visiting the Ben & Jerry’s ice cream factory, just a short distance from Burlington. No matter your age, you’ll love learning about Ben and Jerry’s journey to becoming the kings of ice cream.

In Burlington, don’t miss exploring Church Street Marketplace, walking along the shore of Lake Champlain on the Greenway, or enjoying any of the great restaurants in town. 

The Lake Champlain Byway is one of the most scenic drives in Vermont and runs through Burlington. Check out this and other scenic drives in the state.

Stowe, Vermont, is another favorite place among leaf-peepers, and it’s less than an hour from Burlington, making for a convenient detour on your New England fall road trip. With extra time in your itinerary, we’d suggest staying an additional day in the area and heading up the Gondola SkyRide at Stowe Mountain Resort.

Day 5: Acadia National Park & Bar Harbor, Maine

On the final leg of this splendid New England fall road trip, set your sights on Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor, Maine. 

Coming from New Hampshire, the drive should take just under four hours. If you’re not in a huge rush, consider going by way of Rangeley Lakes National Scenic Byway. It’s one of the best parts of driving in New England.

Once you arrive, you’ll understand why Acadia National Park is one of the most visited parks in the country. Visiting this beautiful landscape is a bucket list item and a must on any fall road trip itinerary. Besides the gorgeous fall colors, visiting Acadia in the fall means fewer crowds but colder temperatures.  

Many come to Acadia to hike the picturesque terrain but there are plenty of scenic driving routes to enjoy, too. The Acadia Byway (Route 3) will take you onto Mt. Desert Island around the park and to Bar Harbor. 

Driving up Cadillac Mountain is a favorite New England fall road trip activity that is permitted until late October. Vehicle reservations are required to drive to Cadillac Summit, so ensure you’ve reserved this journey in advance (30% of reservations go on sale 90 days in advance, the remaining reservations open 2 days in advance).

If the timing aligns, the Acadia Night Sky Festival and Acadia Oktoberfest are two great things to add to your New England fall road trip itinerary. 

The historic coastal town of Bar Harbor is the perfect place to stay when visiting Acadia. There are plenty of places to stay, small shops and quaint restaurants. As the season winds down, so does the town. So, it’s best to visit in September and October. 

Pro Tip: Acadia National Park requires an Entrance Pass. Get yours in advance on the NPS website, or if you have a 4th grader in the family, you could be eligible for free entry!

Consider driving along the Atlantic Coast to Boston when heading south from Acadia National Park. You’ll love the quaint seaside towns and the view from the road. Make sure to stop off at the historic town of Portsmouth. It’s one of the best places to visit New Hampshire in the fall, plus a stop at Take Flight Aerial Adventure Park is bound to be a must for the kids.

With an extra day or 2 available, don’t rush the journey back. Instead, follow our coastal itinerary from Boston to Bar Harbor in reverse.

New England Fall Road Trip Maps

1. Berkshires to Burlington (US-7N)

• Distance: 219 miles  
• Time needed: 5 hours to 3 days

If you want to experience the majesty of the mountains as they change colors with the cooler temps, there’s no better New England fall road trip than the Berkshires to Burlington. 

Beginning in the West Massachusetts town of Sheffield, hop on route US-7 North for one of the most scenic drives in New England. You’ll travel through the beautiful region of the Berkshires, where outdoor adventure awaits, like hiking, biking, and even camping. Local farms along the way provided family fall fun with pumpkin patches and apple cider. 

Heading north into Vermont, Route 7 meanders through quaint New England towns like Bennington and Middlebury. Throughout the trip, you’ll love exploring historic towns, taking in the beautiful landscape, and seeing the covered bridges in the region. Bennington alone has 5, including Paper Mill Village and Silk Road Covered Bridges.

At the northern end of Route 7 is Burlington, Vermont. As the largest city in the state, there’s tons to do, especially on a fall road trip. Situated along the shore of Lake Champlain, walking or biking the Greenway is a definite must.

Church Street is where you’ll find everything from great restaurants and shops to live music and nightlife. There are even fun events throughout the fall, like the Howl’ween Dog Costume Contest and Family Art Saturday. 

The best of fall foliage on this road trip in New England typically begins in Northern Vermont in mid-September. To the south, early October is peak foliage time for the Berkshires. 

If you’re looking for even more fall fun, extending this New England road trip to Stowe is easy and rewarding. It’s only 40 mins from Burlington and is one of the best scenic drives in Vermont. Simply take I-89S to VT-100 N in the historic village of Waterbury.

You’ll pass right by Ben & Jerry’s ice cream factory, where you can take a tour and sample the delicious dessert. At Stowe Mountain Resort, you can climb Mt. Mansfield by hiking, on the Gondola SkyRide, or driving the Auto Toll Road. 

2. Coast of Long Island Sound to Cape Cod (I-95 N, US-1N, I-195E, US-6E) 

• Distance: 269 miles  
• Time needed: 5 hours to 3 days  

One of the absolute best scenic drives in New England is along the shore of Long Island Sound through Connecticut, Rhode Island, and up to Cape Cod. It’s a fabulous trip just about any time of year, but there’s something special about doing it in autumn. It’s when you’ll experience both the magical fall foliage and the tranquil sailboats on the water. 

Beginning in Greenwich, Connecticut, you’ll travel I-95 N along the coast. Make sure to get off and visit the many quaint coastal towns. The fall foliage in this area normally peaks in mid-October through November.

Definite must-dos along the Connecticut coastline are visiting the Mystic Seaport Museum (a family favorite), strolling along the Saugatuck River in Westport, and exploring Main Street in Old Saybrook. This section of the trip is one of the best scenic drives in Connecticut. 

After crossing the border into Rhode Island, set the course for Newport. This historic seaside town is tons of fun for the entire family. There’s lots to explore right on the water’s edge in Newport, making it one of the best scenic drives in Rhode Island.

Watch the boats in the harbor before learning all about it at the Sailing Museum. Get into the fall season in Newport by picking pumpkins and getting lost in a corn maze at local farms. You can even take a Ghost Tour in town. Newport is a great place to spend the night. You’ll find a range of accommodations that meet just about every budget and need. 

The final destination on this coastal New England fall road trip is Cape Cod. The whole family will love exploring the sandy beaches and historic towns. The Cape comes alive in the fall, with the peak fall foliage happening between late September and mid-October. It’s also when events like the Yarmouth Seaside Festival take place. 

Pro Tip: Although you’ll miss the massive summer crowds, Cape Cod is still a super popular destination in the fall. So try to avoid the peak traffic times of Friday evening and Sunday afternoon.

3. Bar Harbor to Boston (I-95S)

• Distance: 281 miles  
• Time needed:  4.5 hours to 3 days  

One of New England’s best places to experience fall is the great Acadia National Park in Maine. Driving the park’s Loop Road through Desert Mountain Island and Bar Harbor is one of the best scenic drives in Maine. So, starting a fall foliage road trip from here makes sense. 

After the summer crowds calm, a new crop of visitors make their way to Acadia in the early fall. The best time to see fall foliage is mid-September until mid-October.

One of the best ways to see the beautiful landscape is from the top of Cadillac Mountain. When considering where to stay, there’s everything from camping in the park to more traditional accommodations in Bar Harbor. Remember that in mid-October, most of these options close for the season.

Pro-Tip: Purchase your entrance pass to Acadia National Park ahead of time at Recreation.gov.

After Bar Harbor and Acadia, it’s time to explore more of beautiful New England in the fall. Head south on I-95 towards Portsmouth, New Hampshire, a definite stop on one of New England’s best fall road trips.

This seaside town has tons to discover, including historic sites and unique boutiques in Market Square. Everyone in the family will love exploring the past at Strawbery Banke Museum.

Leaving Portsmouth, follow the New Hampshire Coastal Byway (NH Routes 1A and 1B) south rather than taking I-95. It’s one of the most scenic drives in New Hampshire, taking you to Seabrook along the shore and through both North Hampton and Hampton Beach State Parks.

No fall trip to New England would be complete without a visit to Salem, Massachusetts. Lucky for us, it’s a stop on this epic road trip. Celebrating Halloween for the entire month of October, the town hosts Haunted Happenings with fun family events like Witch Trial reenactments, ghost tours, and magic shows.

There’s no better way to complete one of New England’s best fall road trips than in Boston. This historic city is fun all year long, but it is especially beautiful when covered in fall colors.

You’ll love enjoying the city, like strolling Boston Common and Quincy Market in the crisp fall air. Peak fall foliage normally happens around the 3rd week of October, so make sure to plan your New England road trip in time to see it.

4. Kancamagus Highway, New Hampshire (Route 112)

The Kancamagus Highway (aka “The Kanc”) is one of the absolute best scenic drives in New Hampshire. Even more so, it’s one of New England’s most incredible fall road trips. 

Stretching from Bath across the White Mountains to Conway in the east, The Kancamagus Highway is one of New England’s best places to experience autumn.

A great place to stop on this fall road trip in New England is Loon Mountain. You’ll find outdoor fun like ziplining and festivities like the Highland Games and Oktoberfest. 

A definite must-visit along the Kancamagus Highway is the Franconia Notch State Park. This awesome park has so much to do for the entire family. Here, you can hike the Appalachian Trail, ride the aerial tramway at Cannon Mountain, and even visit the New England Ski Museum. The Flume Gorge is a must on any trip to the park. 

When it comes to where to stay along The Kanc, camping is a great option with 6 different campgrounds plus options at Franconia Notch State Park. Most campsites are open until mid-October. If that’s not really your thing, you’ll find more accommodations near Bath, Lincoln, and Conway.

5 Scenic Drives in Massachusetts

1. Scenic Drives in Massachusetts: Mount Greylock Scenic Byway

• Distance: 17 miles
• Time needed: 2.5 hours to 1 day

Take in the breathtaking views of Massachusetts’ highest point at the conclusion of Mount Greylock Scenic Byway. This short route from Lanesborough to North Adams offers spectacular panoramic views, endless trails, and more. 

Begin your journey in Lanesborough, where you can squeeze in some retail therapy at the Berkshire Mall before heading into the great outdoors. 

You’ll soon enter Mount Greylock State Reservation, where you can explore over 70 miles of trails perfect for hiking, biking, and even a little bird watching. 

Make sure to budget enough time to climb to the top of the Veterans War Memorial Tower, a towering 92-foot structure that stands at the pinnacle of Mount Greylock. Experience some of the best views in Massachusetts from the top of the tower. They’re well worth the climb – we promise!

You’ll conclude your drive in artistic North Adams, where you can stroll through the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, visit Windsor Lake, or learn about local history at the Heritage State Park and Museum.

When to go: You’ll need to take this scenic Massachusetts drive between May and October, as many roads are closed for the winter. 

2. Scenic Drives in Massachusetts: Essex Coastal Scenic Byway

• Distance: 85 miles
• Time needed: 4-5 hours or 1 to 2 days

Experience the best of what coastal New England has to offer when you travel along the Essex Coastal Scenic Byway. This Massachusetts scenic drive has everything – craggy shorelines, charming seaside villages, towering mansions, and more. 

We recommend taking at least a day to enjoy this scenic Massachusetts drive from Lynn to Salisbury fully. On your journey, you’ll pass through 14 communities, many of which host miles of sandy beaches, mouthwatering seafood restaurants, and miles of hiking and biking paths. 

Notable sites along the way include the town of Beverly, which is often called the birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution and the United States Navy. Or you can visit the Essex Shipbuilding Museum in Essex before spending an hour or two of antiquing in the oft-referred “America’s Antique Capital” before moving on. 

The Essex Coastal Scenic Byway also has plenty of family-friendly attractions along the way, like Salem Willows Arcade and Park in Salem. Young sea lovers will marvel at the exhibits in Real Pirates Salem, and there are also numerous trails and parks to burn off energy and enjoy time in nature – Old Town Hill and Hellcat Interpretive Trail, to name a few. 

When to go: You can travel the Essex Coastal Scenic Byway year-round, although some businesses and attractions may be closed during the winter season. Fall weekends can be exceptionally busy.

3. Scenic Drives in Massachusetts: Battle Road Scenic Byway

• Distance: 21 miles
• Time needed: 1 to 2 hours or 2 to 3 days

Fans of American history will love traveling along the Battle Road Scenic Byway, where the infamous ‘shot heard round the world’ spurred the beginnings of the American Revolution. The route takes you from Arlington to Concord, following the approximate path that the British used. 

You may need to take a day just to explore Arlington, also known as Menotomy, during the American Revolution. Paul Revere and William Dawes famously passed through Arlington, and it’s home to many fascinating cultural and historical sites like the Cyrus Dallin and George A. Smith museums, Jason Russell House, and Spy Pond Park, to name a few. 

The Minute Man National Historical Park also encompasses three areas along the Battle Road Scenic Byway: the towns of Concord, Lincoln, and Lexington. Visitors can walk the same battlegrounds as the Revolutionary soldiers and explore the many trails, historical structures, and notable sites on the grounds. 

We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention a few attractions in Concord, the conclusion of one of the best scenic drives in Massachusetts. 

Concord was the site of the first resistance battle of the American Revolutionary War and was home to transformative minds such as Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Bronson and Louisa Alcott, and Nathaniel Hawthorne. It is truly a town worthy of exploration! 

Pro Tip: Get in touch with your inner Thoreau by visiting Walden Pond State Reservation, a 462-acre park complete with a replica of Thoreau’s home.

When to go: You can drive the Battle Road Scenic Byway all year, although it’s a beautiful scenic drive during the fall with all the vibrant foliage!

4. Scenic Drives in Massachusetts: Mohawk Trail Byway

• Distance: 65 miles
• Time needed: 3 to 4 hours or 1 to 2 days 

Travel back in time on one of the oldest routes in American history, the Mohawk Trail Byway. This 65-mile road takes you through ancient forests, historic towns and landmarks, and magnificent views. 

Before this Massachusetts scenic drive carried automobiles, it was a Mohawk Native American trading and hunting route. In fact, you can still hike a 34-mile stretch of Mohawk footpaths along the recreated Mahican-Mohawk Trail. 

Aside from its many natural attractions, the Mohawk Trail Byway also contains many cultural wonders. You can visit the Museum of Contemporary Art in the Hoosic River Valley or travel a few more miles to Williamstown. There, you can spend an hour (or two) at the Williams College Museum of Art and the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute. 

Recreational activities abound along this scenic drive in Massachusetts, where you can experience the breathtaking wonders of the Bridge of Flowers, see bald eagles’ nests in Barton Cove, and canoe down one of the byway’s five major rivers. 

When to go: The Mohawk Trail Byway is open year-round, with spectacular fall foliage photo opportunities and outdoor activities available in the warmer months. 

5. Scenic Drives in Massachusetts: Cape Ann Shore

• Distance: 21 miles
• Time needed: 1 to 2 hours or 1 day

The Cape Ann Shore coastline drive is a popular Boston day trip, offering plenty of breathtaking seaside views in the span of 21 miles. Beginning in Salem and ending in Rockport, you’ll have many opportunities to take in the sights along the way.

Begin your route in Salem, a town steeped in some of the darkest periods of America’s history (an extremely popular fall road trip for Halloween junkies!). You can easily spend a day exploring Salem, so take at least a few hours before beginning your drive.

There are many noteworthy stops along the Cape Ann Shore coastline, like Halibut Point State Park. Breathe in the salty sea air, stretch your legs, and explore the park’s wealth of trails and tide pools. Acadia National Park & Bar Harbor, Maine

Visiting Acadia in the fall is the ideal time. It’s when you will find fewer crowds and lower temperatures. The impressive foliage is the major draw for visiting Acadia in the fall. Ranked as one of the best places to see the fall colors in the country, Acadia is one not to miss. 

You can choose to hike or drive through this magnificent park, or better yet, do both. The Acadia Scenic Byway (Route 3) takes you around Mt Desert Island and into the quaint Bar Harbor. Driving up Cadillac Mountain is also a must-do for any New England fall bucket list. 

Acadia Night Sky Festival and Acadia Oktoberfest are two additional reasons it’s one of the best places to visit in the fall on the East Coast. 

Where to Stay: Bar Harbor is the perfect place to stay when visiting Acadia National Park. The proximity is perfect for adventures in nature. It’s also the best place to wind down or take a break, with tons of cute little shops and places to eat.

Boston, Massachusetts

There’s no better place to experience fall on the East Coast than Boston. As the leaves begin to change and the temperatures start to drop, the city takes on a magical feel.  

In the city of Boston, there’s so much to do, making it one of the best places to visit in the fall on the East Coast. You can’t go wrong with filling the itinerary with classic Boston landmarks. Places like Quincy Market, Boston Commons, and walking the Freedom Trail take on a whole new feel surrounded by fall colors. 

Autumn in the Boston area is festival time. There are so many to check out, like the South Boston Street Festival and the Greek Fest in Brookline. 

As the second largest producer of cranberries, Massachusetts helps us all put the Thanksgiving staple on our tables each year. So why not get into the cranberry pride at the Harwich Cranberry & Arts Festival?

If you’re in the Boston area during the Halloween season, visiting Salem is an absolute must. This notorious town celebrates its notorious past with its annual Haunted Happenings, a series of Halloween-themed events the whole family will love. 

Pro Tip: Driving around the Boston area, you’ll be able to see the fall colors abound. But, if you want to really get into it, there are a number of scenic fall East Coast drives in Mass that will have you oohing and ahhing every mile.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

With the start of the new school year, many families find a great fall getaway waiting for them in Philadelphia. Steeped in American history, kids and adults alike love learning about the country’s past in the city of brotherly love.  

There’s nothing quite like seeing their history books come to life at the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall in Philadelphia. No wonder Philadelphia is one of the great fall vacation ideas for families. 

Animal lovers will have the most fun visiting the Philadelphia Zoo and the city’s Adventure Aquarium. If you’re worried about what to do on a day when the weather isn’t the greatest, don’t worry! Places like the Please Touch Museum (perfect for kids 0-8 years old) and the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University are perfect solutions for the entire family.

Washington, DC

Visiting the nation’s capital is one of the best places to visit in the fall, especially if you’re traveling with kids. 

From September through November, you’ll avoid the scorching temps DC experiences in the summertime. Instead, the weather will be pleasant and cool, making it easy to stroll from one monument to the next. 

There are so many things to see and do throughout the entire city. One of the best places to start is the National Mall. Here you’ll find a bunch of museums where admission is free, and no tickets are required. Definitely check out the National Gallery of Art, National Museum of American History, and the National Museum of the American Indian. 

The city is bustling with energy, restaurants, and nightlife. You can enjoy eating and shopping in the historic Georgetown neighborhood, or head to U Street for some of the coolest places around. 

Where to Stay: There are tons of places to choose from when it comes to spending the night in DC. The city’s Metro makes it easy to hop around town no matter where you choose to be even if it’s in the surrounding towns like Arlington, VA or Silver Spring, MD. 

Colonial Williamsburg, VA

A visit to Colonial Williamsburg is one of the most memorable events for Americans. There’s no better time to experience this historic town than in the fall. It’s when the summer heat has subsided and fun harvest festivities are in full swing. 

It’s so much fun to step back in time in Colonial Williamsburg. Everyone will love interacting with the interpreters and seeing how things were made in the 18th century. You can even eat food made from recipes of the time. Yum!

November is American Indian Heritage Month and it’s a special time in Colonial Williamsburg. You’ll learn about American Indians in Williamsburg and how they influenced the community. 

On both Constitution Day and Veterans Weekend, Colonial Williamsburg hosts special events and performances, making it one of the best places to visit in the fall on the East Coast. 

If you loved your time in Colonial Williamsburg and are looking for even more historical fun, consider visiting Jamestown and Yorktown too. The 23-mile Colonia Parkway connecting the Historic Triangle is one of the scenic fall drives in Virginia.

Blue Ridge Parkway, Virginia and North Carolina

Beginning at the Shenandoah National Park in Virginia, this special road takes one of the most scenic fall drives all the way down to the Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina. Covering 469 miles, it may seem like a long drive. But in the fall, it’s worth every mile. 

True, the beauty is in the drive along the majestic mountains, but you should schedule some time in each of the two national parks. Each has so much to offer a family in the way of outdoor adventure, historical sights, and natural beauty. 

Leaf-peepers love the Blue Ridge Parkway because the fall foliage season is extraordinarily long. That’s right, because of the elevation changes, you’re likely to see colors from mid-September well into November.  

Everyone in the family will love the Blue Ridge Parkway. There are so many opportunities to venture into the wilderness on hikes, explore quaint towns like Little Switzerland and simply pull off at an overlook to take in the view. Don’t miss walking the Mile High Swinging Bridge at Grandfather Mountain or hike the Humpback Rocks. 

Asheville, NC is a favorite of any fall vacation on the East Coast. Lucky for us, it’s part of the Blue Ridge Parkway. 

Where to Stay: All along the Blue Ridge Parkway, you’ll find places to stay from campsites like Mt. Pisgah Campground, to quaint bed and breakfasts such as the Fox Hill B&B in Fairfield, VA. Better yet, get the full Blue Ridge Parkway Experience by staying at the historic Little Switzerland Inn. 

Pro Tip: Shenandoah National Park requires everyone to have an Entrance Pass. If you want to hike Old Rag make sure to get your Day-Use ticket for that too. It’s easy to buy both before your trip on the nps.gov website. 

Pro Tip: Although no entrance pass is required for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, a new Parking Fee Program began on March 1, 2023. 

Coastal Highway (Route 17), Virginia to Florida

One of the absolute best fall vacations on the East Coast is driving Coastal Highway (Route 17), stretching from Virginia to Florida. Now, you may not be up for traveling the entire 1,200+ miles of the road. But you can pick different sections of the Coastal Highway that make for some of the best fall getaways on the East Coast.

You’ll love exploring the southern shores of the East Coast in the fall on the Coastal Highway. With cooler temperatures, it’s easy to spend the day walking the sandy beaches, exploring the coastal towns, and enjoying the wildlife in parks and refuges. It also means you’ll avoid the summer’s massive crowds.

The Coastal Highway runs through major destinations like Myrtle Beach and Charleston in South Carolina, and Savannah, Georgia. In Florida, Route 17 connects with Jacksonville, St. Augustine, and even Orlando inland. 

Don’t miss the small seaside towns along the way, like Newport News in Virginia, New Bern in North Carolina, and St. Simons Island in Georgia.

As you can imagine, there are endless possibilities along the Coastal Highway. Your entire family will agree it’s one of the best places to visit in the fall on the East Coast. 

Top Tips For Places to Visit in the Fall on the East Coast 

• Seeing the leaves change color is a key to some of the best places to visit in the fall.
• Individual states in New England post their own yearly foliage maps, like New Hampshire, and Virginia while others are done by region, like Blue Ridge Mountains. 
• The Farmers Almanac uses historical data to predict the foliage schedule  
• If a National Park is part of your plan for one of the fall getaways on the East Coast, make sure to keep up-to-date on alerts and conditions on the NPS.gov website. An example is this one for the Shenandoah National Park.   
• No matter where you’re headed on the East Coast in the fall, it’s important to stay up to date on road conditions. Here are some to help ensure your fall East Coast drives are hassle-free:

• Fall on the East Coast is also hurricane season in the southern states. Running through the end of November, it’s important to keep an eye on any potential disruptions to your fall vacation on the East Coast.  

1. Forest Heritage National Scenic Byway

• Distance: 76 miles
• Time Needed: 1-2 days

The Forest Heritage National Scenic Byway is a stretch of road that will take you through the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, giving you the opportunity to explore the breathtaking mountain scenery along the way. There are a number of outdoor activities and scenic views to explore along the way, including the Pisgah National Forest, Looking Glass Falls, and more. 

While if you are driving straight through this byway could be driven in just a few hours, we recommend taking a day or two to make stops along the way and enjoy the nature around you. Some of the most notable stops include Sliding Rock, a great stop for swimming, Looking Glass Rock, and Sunburst Falls. In addition to these sights, you can enjoy a number of hiking trails, including John Rock Hike, Moore Cove Falls Hike, quiet lunch at the Coontree Picnic Area & Restrooms, and spend some time at Lake Logan. 

If you are looking for somewhere to stay during your visit, consider Davidson Campground, there are 160 campsites available for visitors, and the campground is available all year round. 

Pro tip: Due to some of the high elevations throughout the mountains, it may be difficult to navigate if traveling by RV or mobile camper. 

When to go: The weather conditions of Pisgah National Forest are particularly beautiful during the Spring and Summer months.

2. Mountain Waters Scenic Byway

• Distance: 61 miles
• Time Needed: 1-2 days

The Mountain Waters Scenic Byway will take you from Highlands, North Carolina, to Almond, North Carolina, and travels through the Nantahala National Forest. As you travel through the forest, you will come across a number of attractions and sites that make for excellent stops along your route. 

As you begin your travel, about 4.5 miles outside of Highlands, you will reach Cliffside Lake Recreation Area. If your family enjoys the outdoors and fun activities, you could potentially spend hours or even a full day just here alone. The area offers swimming, fishing, and picnic areas to enjoy a packed family lunch. 

Additional popular attractions along the way include Bridal Veil Falls, Van Hook Glade, Rufus Morgan Trail, and the Nantahala River. In the Nantahala River, you can partake in trout fishing and white water rafting in the Nantahala River Gorge. Stop for a picnic lunch at the Ferebee Memorial Picnic Area and enjoy the views while you relax and recharge to continue exploring. 

As you come to the end of the Mountain Waters Scenic Byway, you will run into Fontana Lake, where you can enjoy a number of additional water activities, including swimming, water skiing, and kneeboarding. 

When to go: Because of the amount of time that you may spend in and around water on this scenic drive, we recommend visiting during the warmest months of the year, June-August. 

3. Ocoee Scenic Byway

• Distance: 30 miles
• Time Needed: 1-2 days

The Ocoee Scenic Byway is the first designated National Forest in the nation as it takes you through the Cherokee National Forest. Along this drive, you will see a number of natural wonders, including the mountainscapes of Chilhowee Mountain, Lake Ocoee, and the whitewater Ocoee River.

As you travel through Cherokee National Forest, you will encounter a number of attractions and stopping points, including Big Frog, Chilhowee Mountains, and Sugarloaf Mountain Park. As you make your drive, you can take in the sights, and with several pull-offs along the route, you will be sure to get some great pictures with your family and friends. 

If you are looking for fun outdoor activities to enjoy, popular options include Parksville Beach, where your family can enjoy swimming and lounging on the beach and whitewater rafting and kayaking in the Ocoee River.

When to go: North Carolina temperatures are rather comfortable year-round, with the coolest months averaging in the 50s and the warmest months peaking in the 90s, so you can enjoy this drive at any time of the year, but remember that river temperatures can be very cold in the cooler months of the year so if you plan to get into the water it is best to visit during the Summer months. 

4. Indian Lakes Scenic Byway

• Distance: 75 miles
• Time Needed: 1-2 days

The Indian Lakes Scenic Byway is a 75-mile stretch that will take you through the Nantahala National Forest and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This 75-mile route is in Western North Carolina along the Tennessee border.

Along the drive, you will see beautiful scenery and a number of stunning lakes, and at the end of the byway, you will come into the quaint town of Robbinsville, where you will enjoy some great local eats. 

As you drive through the Indian Lakes Scenic Byway, there are a number of can’t-miss stops along the way, including Fontana Lake, Lake Santeetlah, and of course, the Fontana Dam. The Fontana Dam is the tallest dam east of the Rocky Mountains. Here, you can also enjoy the world-famous Appalachian Trail and catch an incredible view of the Dam from the Observation Deck. 

Looking for somewhere to stay? The Fontana Village Resort offers an excellent family-friendly environment for a comfortable place to stay and a number of fun activities such as outdoor pools, hiking trails, and even a lazy river. 

As you complete the Indian Lakes Scenic Byway, you will end up in Robbinsville. Robbinsville offers its own number of activities and adventures, such as Graham County Park, the Stecoah Valley Cultural Arts Center, and the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest. If you are hungry after your explorations for the way, you can enjoy some delicious eating at The Hub or the Moonshiners Steakhouse. 

When to go: Because the main focus of the Indian Lakes Scenic Byway is the scenery and views along the way, this drive makes for an excellent adventure at any time of the year. Seeing the leaves change in the forests in the Fall is a particularly special view. 

5. Outer Banks Scenic Byway

• Distance: 138 miles
• Time Needed: 2-3 days

The Outer Banks are the islands off the coast of the state of North Carolina that separate the Atlantic Ocean from the mainland. The Outer Banks Scenic Byway is a scenic drive that will take you along the North Carolina Coast.

Simply driving along the coast is an adventure to enjoy all on its own, but there are a number of fun attractions and stops to make along the way that will really amplify your experience. Popular stops along the route include the Bodie Island Lighthouse, the Canadian Hole, the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, and the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum and Heritage Center. 

In addition to these attractions, you can embark on two ferry rides as you travel the Outer Banks Scenic Byway. One of these ferry rides is completely free for riders. This ferry will take you from Hatteras to the Ocracoke Islands. The other ferry ride will take you from Ocracoke Island to Down Easts Cedar Island, but there is a toll on this ride. 

When to go: Because the Outer Banks is primarily beach-focused, it is best to travel this byway during the Summer months to enjoy the full experience. 

6. Blue Ridge Parkway

• Distance: 469 miles
• Time Needed: 3-4 days

While we have certainly discussed some incredible scenic drives in North Carolina, we have saved the best for last (in our opinion).

The Blue Ridge Parkway is a long stretch of road that travels along the Blue Ridge Mountains and is part of the National Park Service as it connects the Shenandoah National Park and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Blue Ridge Parkway has become known as “America’s Favorite Scenic Drive.”

While traveling the entire 469-mile distance will certainly prove to be an incredible adventure, the great thing about the Blue Ridge Parkway is that you can have an unforgettable experience along any stretch of the parkway, no matter the distance. 

A drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway opens the opportunity to enjoy a number of fun outdoor activities, including hiking, biking, and stops along the way to enjoy scenic views. There are a number of can’t-miss stops on the Blue Ridge Parkway, including Craggy Gardens, Mount Mitchell, the Blue Ridge Parkway Visitor Center, Mount Pisgah, and the Folk Art Center. 

When to go: The Blue Ridge Parkway is an excellent drive at any time of the year. The best part is that depending on the season you visit, you will have an entirely different experience each and every time.
