16. Glacier National Park, Montana

Memorial Day weekend marks one of the first opportunities to experience Glacier as it emerges from winter’s grip. While the famous Going-to-the-Sun Road may still be partially snow-covered, the lower elevations burst with spring activity.

Grizzly bears and cubs become active in the valleys, mountain goat kids make their first appearances, and wildflowers begin their stunning display. Waterfalls are at their most spectacular from spring snowmelt.

Apgar Campground, the park’s largest with 194 sites, opens for the season, offering stunning views of Lake McDonald and convenient access to the West Glacier village amenities. Fish Creek Campground provides 178 sites in a more secluded setting with newly renovated facilities. Sprague Creek Campground, with 25 sites, offers an intimate lakeside experience perfect for families with small children.

The Apgar Visitor Center debuts its summer programming this weekend, featuring special presentations about glacier formation and wildlife safety.

Memorial Day activities include guided hikes to Avalanche Lake, family-friendly boat tours on Lake McDonald, and evening ranger programs about the park’s Native American heritage. Kids particularly enjoy the “Junior Glacier Explorer” program and the interactive wildlife tracking workshops.

Booking your campsite: For Memorial Day camping, Apgar Campground operates first-come, first-served in early season, so arrive by Thursday. Fish Creek reservations open through Recreation.gov six months in advance – book in November.

17. Letchworth State Park, New York

Known as the “Grand Canyon of the East,” Letchworth reaches peak grandeur on Memorial Day weekend. Spring rains power up the three major waterfalls, creating spectacular photo opportunities. The ancient forest bursts with spring ephemeral wildflowers, and migrating warblers fill the gorge with song. The timing is perfect for hiking and rafting before summer crowds arrive.

The park offers 270 campsites spread across eight areas, with the 82-site Loop A particularly popular for families due to its proximity to the pool and playground. The newly developed Autism Nature Trail provides an inclusive outdoor experience with eight sensory-rich stations. The historic Glen Iris Inn opens its seasonal dining room this weekend, offering spectacular falls views.

Memorial Day activities include guided geology walks, birds of prey demonstrations, and special programs about the area’s Seneca Nation heritage. The park’s newly renovated nature center features interactive exhibits about the gorge’s formation. Kids love the junior naturalist program and the seasonal hot air balloon rides that begin this weekend.

18. Big Bend National Park, Texas

Memorial Day weekend represents one of the last opportunities to comfortably camp in Big Bend before summer’s intense heat arrives. The desert is still colorful with late-blooming cacti, while the Chisos Mountains offer comfortable temperatures and clear skies. This timing also coincides with peak bird migration through the Rio Grande corridor.

The Chisos Basin Campground, at 5,400 feet elevation, offers 60 sites with spectacular mountain views and access to the best high-country trails (no large RVs). Rio Grande Village Campground provides 100 sites near the river, featuring a newly renovated visitor center and swimming pool. The Cottonwood Campground in the South Unit offers 24 peaceful sites in a shaded grove perfect for bird watching.

Memorial Day weekend features special ranger programs, including guided desert ecology walks, border culture presentations, and night sky viewing sessions (the park is an International Dark Sky site). Kids particularly enjoy the “Desert Explorer” junior ranger program and the hands-on activities at the Fossil Discovery Exhibit.

The nearby town of Marathon hosts a unique Memorial Day celebration blending West Texas and Mexican cultural traditions.

Halloween Horror Nights, Universal Studios, Orlando, Florida

Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights is a premier Halloween event for those seeking more intense scares, better suited to families with teens. The park transforms into a horror-filled playground with elaborately themed haunted houses, scare zones, and live shows. Many attractions are based on popular horror movies and TV shows.

While too intense for young children (their recommended age limit is 13+), it’s popular with teens and adults. In addition to the scares, visitors can enjoy the park’s regular attractions with shorter wait times.

For those wanting a behind-the-scenes look, daytime tours of the haunted houses are available. These tours offer insights into the creation of the scares without the intense nighttime atmosphere. Universal also offers family-friendly Halloween activities throughout October, allowing you to enjoy the Halloween spirit without the extreme scares of the nighttime event.

The event runs this year on selected nights between August 29 and November 2, 2025.

Manchac Swamp, Louisiana

Known as the “Ghost Swamp,” Manchac Swamp is steeped in eerie legends and Cajun folklore. The swamp’s spooky reputation centers around Julia Brown, a 19th-century practitioner of voodoo who allegedly cursed the town of Frenier on her deathbed. Legend has it that on the day of her funeral in 1915, a hurricane devastated the area, fulfilling her curse.

1. Rocky Mountain National Park

Location: Colorado

It’s not exactly a secret that Rocky Mountain National Park is one of the most beautiful parks in the entire country, but once the temperatures start to drop, this gorgeous place in Colorado turns into a wonderland for glorious views, incredible nature draped in autumn hues, and some of the best opportunities to see wildlife up close.

The dramatic landscape of Rocky Mountain National Park was carved by water and humongous glaciers, making the scenery look like something out of a painting.

As you explore, you’ll stumble across some of the highest peaks in the country, get treated to views of hundreds of alpine lakes and streams, and get to walk over some of the dreamiest hiking trails in the world.

Even though fall does get a little chilly at Rocky Mountain National Park, it’s highly considered the best time of the year to visit for two reasons: One is that fall foliage covers the gorgeous Trail Ridge Road, which is one of the most scenic highways in the United States and seeing it blanketed by golden aspens is a scene unlike any other.

Secondly, fall brings in the elk rut, which is when elk arrive in the area for mating season. Not only will you be able to see hundreds of them up close, but you’ll also be able to attend the annual Elk Fest organized by the park to learn everything about these mountain-roaming creatures through music, live entertainment, storytelling, and interactive activities.

Entrance Fee: $30 per private vehicle, valid for one day, or $35 per vehicle, valid for seven days

2. Shenandoah National Park

Location: Virginia

Tucked away in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, Shenandoah National Park is a mecca for those looking for crisp mountain air and glorious fall foliage. Being only an hour from Washington, D.C., it’s no surprise it’s one of the most popular national parks on the East Coast!

Fall foliage in Shenandoah National Park usually begins in early October and lasts until mid-November, making the season quite long.

During your visit, you can explore the park in various ways. A favorite for those limited on time is driving the scenic Skyline Road, Virginia, which is considered a treat to the eyes any time of the year but looks especially stunning when fall colors drape the scenery.

Hiking is another must. Shenandoah boasts 516 miles worth of trails, with 101 miles being part of the famous Appalachian Trail! Throughout your hiking adventures, you’ll be able to enjoy fall colors in their full splendor and see plenty of waterfalls, mountains, caverns, and more.

Seasonal Closures: Fall is the peak season for Shenandoah, so do expect queuing and crowds, especially on weekends. You can check out precise conditions on their webcams!

The park stays open throughout winter; however, icy conditions can close Skyline Drive from mid-November through February. Dickey Ridge Visitor Center and lodges within the park close in late November. Most campsites close on October 30, while Big Meadow stays open until November 30 for magnificent fall camping.

3. Acadia National Park

Location: Maine

Acadia National Park definitely takes the cake when it comes to quintessential fall destinations on the East Coast.

Even though Acadia is gorgeous year-round, there’s no better time to visit than the fall months, especially if vibrant autumn colors are what you’re after.

Home to a humongous offering of glorious natural landscapes ranging from woodlands to mountains, lakes, and dramatic coastlines, this is one of the best national parks to visit in the fall if you’re after picturesque views and a variety of recreational activities.

Once September creeps in, Acadia starts showing beautiful fall colors ranging from crisp gold to vibrant reds. Peak season usually happens around mid-October, but even if you can’t make it during that time, you’ll still find a wonderland of colors if you visit a bit earlier or later.

Some of the best ways to make the most out of fall in Acadia include hiking to Cadillac Mountain for panoramic views, driving the Park Loop Road across the park, hiking the Bubbles Nubble Loop to strike off a variety of landscapes, and exploring Eagles Lake by kayak or canoe.

4. Arches National Park

Location: Utah

Perhaps a desert isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when you think of visiting national parks in the fall, but we absolutely had to include Arches National Park in the list because this time of the year is the best time to explore this gem in Utah.

Weather-wise, the temperatures in Arches start to drop in autumn, making it an ideal time for hiking and exploring.

The trails at this Mighty 5 national park are usually mild and perfect for introducing visitors to hiking in the desert. Visitors can also see colossal natural arches and strange rock formations that look almost out of this world.

Some of the best things to do at Arches National Park include hiking to Landscape Arch to see the largest natural rock arch in the world, experiencing a sunrise at Delicate Arch (this is the arch depicted on Utah’s license plates!), driving the Arches Scenic Drive, admiring the scenery at Park Avenue Point, standing under Double Arch, and more.

Entrance Fee: $30 per private vehicle, valid for seven days

Seasonal Closures: The park is open throughout the year, 24 hours a day. However, if you’re visiting before October 31, you’ll also need a timed entry permit.

5. Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Location: North Carolina and Tennessee

With so many species of trees within its boundaries, Great Smoky Mountains National Park is another wonderland to visit if you want to see fall tones. Seeing vibrant hues of yellows, oranges, and reds backdropped by snow-capped mountains is definitely something everyone should experience at least once in their lives!

Some of the best things to do in the Smokies to fully experience the season are hiking to see a few of the park’s waterfalls (they look absolutely stunning surrounded by autumn colors!), driving the scenic roads that traverse the park (Newfound Gap Road, Morton Overlook, and Clingman’s Dome Road are all amazing), and renting a cabin inside the park to enjoy your very own personal slice of fall in the park.

Fall also brings a plethora of fun festivals, including the Dollywood Harvest Festival, which celebrates the harvest season; the Fall Harvest at the Island, which honors the fall; and the Octoberfest at Ober, which features the area’s German heritage.

Fall foliage usually begins around early October and can be viewed throughout the month until early November. It usually peaks in mid-October.

Entrance Fee: There is no entry fee to Great Smoky Mountains National Park (from 2023, be aware a Parking Tag system will be implemented – applicable if you’ll be parking your car for more than 15 minutes)

Seasonal Closures: The park is open 24 hours a day, though there can be seasonal road closures due to weather conditions in winter – stay in touch with current information on Twitter @SmokiesRoadsNPS. Some campgrounds close between the end of October and the end of November, Cades Cove and Smokemount are open year-round.

6. Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Location: Ohio

As the only national park in Ohio, Cuyahoga Valley is one of the best national parks to visit in the fall if you’d rather check out somewhere that’s not on everyone’s usual radar.

Here, you’ll enjoy crisp evenings and bright sunny days, making this time of year ideal for hiking and exploring (and you’ll find fewer bugs than in the summer!).

Fall foliage usually peaks around the third week of October, but you’ll be able to enjoy the colors pretty much all month, making it one of the prettiest scenic drives in Ohio.

One of the favorite ways for visitors to explore Cuyahoga is by hopping on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad Train, which, as its name may have clued you in, is a train that traverses the valley and provides some of the most beautiful views the entire park has to offer.

Another way to explore is to hike a few trails inside the park. There are over 120 miles of them on the menu. If you’re limited on time, we recommend focusing on the Brandywine Falls trail to see a 65-foot waterfall, the Virginia Kendall Ledges Trail to walk down sandstone rock “ledges,” and the Pine Grove Trail to see beautiful colors.

7. Mount Rainier National Park

Location: Washington

Mount Rainier is special because it encompasses many different ecosystems, ranging from lowland forests to wetlands and alpine tundra. Moreover, there are 26 named glaciers here and over 1,000 species of plants and animals, many of which are incredibly endangered and have found a safe haven inside the park.

Once the fall season begins, Mount Rainier bursts into life with different activities. An easy day trip from Seattle, a must-do is going on a naturalist-guided walk to spot Roosevelt Elk during the breeding season in September. Other fun things to do during the autumn include going berry picking and mushroom foraging.

As for hiking, some of the best fall hikes to try include Reflection Lakes, The Morain Trail, Third Burroughs, and the Knapsack Pass. Horseback riding is also a wonderful way to explore the park.

Seasonal Closures: The park is open year-round. However, it is recommended that visitors check road conditions before setting out. Many of the visitor centers and campgrounds close by mid-October.

8. Bryce Canyon National Park

Bryce Canyon National Park is guaranteed to please if you’re more in the mood to escape fall altogether and experience an entirely different landscape.

This striking national park in Utah is famed for being home to the most extensive collection of hoodoos in the world, but due to its location in the desert, summers tend to get scorching hot and winters particularly cold, making fall an ideal time to visit for bearable temperatures.

While there aren’t any fall-themed activities during the season, fall offers a wonderful chance to explore some of Bryce Canyon’s most famous parts without the hordes of crowds, but before the frostiest days of winter.

Some of the best ways to make the most out of your visit include hiking the Queen’s Garden to Navajo Loop, following the Fairyland Loop, and joining a ranger-led program to understand the park’s unique geology fully.

During the holiday season, the town transforms into a picturesque Christmas village, complete with twinkling lights, festive markets, and horse-drawn sleigh rides. Stowe’s historic village and the backdrop of Mount Mansfield, Vermont’s highest peak, create a postcard-perfect holiday setting.

Families can also enjoy ice skating, hot chocolate by a fire, and local holiday events, making it a magical destination for Christmas and winter adventures.

4. Park City, Utah 

Famed for its wonderful ski resorts, Park City is a dream come true for those who want to feel as though they’ve stepped into a real-life snow globe. 

Park City homes plenty of luxury hotels perfect for a staycation cozying up by the fireplace, but if you’d rather head outdoors, this resort in Utah offers all sorts of adventures for snow aficionados. Ice skating, dog sledding, snowmobiling, and skiing are just a few of the items on the activity menu of this winter wonderland. 

As if that weren’t enough, January in Park City is as exciting as it gets. The resort hosts the Sundance Film Festival every year, so you may very well come across some of your favorite celebs during your visit!

5. North Pole, Alaska 

Believe it or not, there’s a town that is actually called North Pole in Alaska! 

Located close to Fairbanks, the small Alaskan town of North Pole is known as the place where Christmas is alive for the entirety of the year. If what you’re after is a winter wonderland in the USA to spend the holiday season in, you’ll find yourself in heaven here, but even if you visit during January or February, you’ll still be able to get that Christmassy feeling even past the official date. 

At North Pole, you’ll find streets lined by giant candy canes, spot twinkling lights all over, and even get to meet real reindeer. As if that weren’t reason enough to visit, this area of Alaska is located close to the Arctic Circle, which means catching a Northern Lights show is a very easy thing to do here. 

6. North Conway, New Hampshire

Located in the heart of the White Mountains, North Conway offers a winter wonderland experience ideal for a festive family getaway. The town is known for its outdoor activities, including skiing at Cranmore Mountain, tubing, and snowshoeing.

At Christmas, North Conway is adorned with holiday lights and decorations, with local shops offering handcrafted gifts and seasonal treats. The Conway Scenic Railroad offers a magical “Polar Express” ride for kids, complete with Santa and hot cocoa. The beautiful snow-covered peaks and quaint New England charm make it perfect for a cozy, family-oriented Christmas escape.

7. Telluride, Colorado 

Snowy mountains, gorgeous nature, and charming historic buildings are the staples of this mountain locale in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. 

Once a thriving mining hub during the Victorian era, Telluride is host to a plethora of historical goodness, especially around its downtown, where you’ll find tons of picturesque buildings, an opera house, and a thriving performing arts venue that first opened in the early 1900s. 

Winter hiking is a favorite activity in Telluride, but if you want to do something that gets your heart pumping, other things to do include sledding down mountains, cross-country skiing, and even ice climbing! 

Moreover, Telluride’s outskirts are famous for their gorgeous hot springs, where you can take a dip and relax your muscles after a day spent adventuring in the snow surrounded by beautiful views of the San Juan Mountains. 

8. Gatlinburg & The Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee 

As the gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains, Gatlinburg in Tennessee is a glorious mountain town that truly knows how to put on a show during the winter months. 

Aside from getting to explore one of the most visited national parks in the United States sans the crowds, you’ll also get the chance to enjoy winter sports inside the park. 

The best way to enjoy both destinations is by booking yourself a cabin or chalet inside the park for a few days and staying at Gatlinburg’s downtown for the rest of the trip.

Although small, this charming alpine destination offers a thriving foodie scene and quintessential alpine vibes, not to mention it hosts tons of exciting winter events such as the Anakeesta’s Enchanted Winter of Lights festival.

9. Camden, Maine 

It’s not exactly a secret that Maine is a quintessential winter wonderland, and the town of Camden is a dream come true for those looking for a pretty-as-it-gets-snowy destination. 

Home to a strikingly gorgeous harbor and featuring views of the ocean, Camden may very well make you feel like you were transported into a village in coastal England. Skiing with views of the Atlantic is a thing here, or you can simply opt to stroll through the town for some serious winter eye candy.

10. Ouray, Colorado 

Tucked away in the heart of the San Juan Mountains, Ouray in Colorado is often dubbed the “Switzerland of America” due to its European-style architecture and striking mountain vistas. 

Aside from offering every single outdoor adventure in the snow you could think of (skiing, snowboarding, sledding, and more!), Ouray is also a great place to visit if you enjoy attending events and festivals.

Once winter officially starts, this town in Colorado becomes host to several festivals, including the Ouray Ice Festival and the San Juan Skijoring. Both of these festivals celebrate Ouray’s love for all things winter.

11. Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming 

Yellowstone National Park is gorgeous any time of the year, and while most people prefer to visit during the summer when temperatures are warmer, there’s something absolutely magical about seeing its iconic landscape draped in snow. 

Frozen lakes, snow-dusted mountains, and steaming geysers make visiting Yellowstone during the colder months an absolute treat. 

Although the Beartooth Scenic Byway may be closed in winter, the Buffalo Bill Cody Scenic Byway through Wapiti Valley is an excellent winter alternative, offering fascinating geological formations.

Moreover, the park rarely sees crowds during the winter, which means you’ll get some of its most visited landmarks all to yourself. Winter is also an excellent time to view wildlife in Yellowstone, with elk, wolves, bison, and other animals being incredibly easy to spot against the white landscape. 

As an added bonus, Jackson Hole, a dreamy ski resort, is located just a stone’s throw away from Yellowstone, so you can have a winter vacation with the best of both worlds!

12. Duluth, Minnesota 

Duluth in Minnesota is another wonderful destination to visit during December if what you’re looking for is snow, Christmas vibes, and all things jolly. 

Even though it stays pretty low-key during the rest of the year, Duluth shines bright during the holiday season, when it becomes host to one of the biggest displays of Christmas lights in the entire world. 

Aside from getting to stroll inside a place that feels like it came straight out of a Dr. Seuss novel, there are many more activities to enjoy during your time in Duluth. These include taking a scenic train journey along Lake Superior to see the largest lake in the USA completely frozen or checking out the Historic Glensheen Mansion. 

13. Lake Placid, New York

Lake Placid, nestled in the Adirondacks, is a charming village known for its Olympic heritage and beautiful winter setting. The town is transformed into a festive wonderland in the Christmas season with snow-covered streets, holiday lights, and family-friendly activities.

Famous for its winter sports legacy, visitors can enjoy skating on the Olympic Oval, skiing at Whiteface Mountain, and even bobsledding at the Olympic Sports Complex. The town also hosts festive parades, Christmas tree lighting, and cozy spots for hot chocolate by the fire. Its rich history and winter sports make it an iconic winter destination.

14. Lake Tahoe, California and Nevada 

Even though Lake Tahoe is more popular during the summer months for beachside goodness and water fun, it also happens to be a glorious winter destination for those who love the outdoors and stunning views. 

Once winter creeps in, the mountains surrounding Lake Tahoe become a mecca for fun winter sports, including cross-country skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, ice skating, and sleigh rides. 

As if that weren’t enough, hiking in the snow is a thing here, with plenty of trails available to take you to secluded beaches that look just as striking when dusted in white.

A can’t-miss hiking destination is the Vikingsholm Castle On Emerald Bay, which is a castle on an island in the middle of the lake that looks as though it belongs on a fairytale in winter.

15. New York City, New York

We couldn’t round out our list of Winter Wonderlands without including New York City. While there may be less chance of snow than some of the destinations on our list, New York City transforms into a winter wonderland during the holiday season, making it one of the most iconic Christmas destinations in the world.

Central Park sparkles with snow, and families can enjoy ice skating at Rockefeller Center beneath the famous towering Christmas tree. The city’s dazzling window displays, especially along Fifth Avenue, add to the festive spirit.

Holiday markets pop up in Bryant Park and Union Square, offering seasonal treats and unique gifts. The Radio City Christmas Spectacular and the New Year’s Eve ball drop in Times Square draw visitors from around the globe, making winter in New York an unforgettable experience.

1. Tennessee Scenic Drives: Cherohala Skyway

• Distance: 43 miles total, 23 in Tennessee 
• Time Needed: 2 hours or more, depending on stops 

One of the most legendary scenic drives in Tennessee, the Cherohala Skyway is a truly stunning drive through the Cherokee and Nantahala National Forests, thus creating the name “Cherohala.”

The entire drive connects Robbinsville, North Carolina, with Tellico Plains, Tennessee, so it’s one of the best roads in Tennessee to take if you’re going to or coming from North Carolina. 

The twisting, winding road has a scenic vista at every turn, so you’ll definitely want to plan for time to make stops for photographs or check out some of the hiking trails along the way. There are a couple of waterfalls visible from the road, such as the impressive Bald River Falls, or places to go swimming, like the Indian Boundary Recreation Area. 

If you’re interested in camping, there are plenty of spots to pick from, some of which require reservations, and other campgrounds are on a first-come-first-serve basis.  

When to go: Spring through fall are the best times for this drive since the road can be very dangerous in the winter. 

2. Tennessee Scenic Drives: Cumberland Gap Scenic Byway

• Distance: 200 miles 
• Time Needed: 4 hours to several days, depending on stops 

Not only is this drive beautiful, it’s also one of the scenic byways in Tennessee with historic importance. The Cumberland Gap became a significant crossing point for thousands of pioneers and settlers who made their way west across Tennessee during the early days of the United States. 

The drive connects Cumberland Gap on the east end and Dale Hollow on the west end. In between, it becomes one of the best scenic drives in middle Tennessee, taking you through farmland, up over bluffs, and along twisting roads with mountain vistas. 

Cove Lake State Park is a good place to stop which is known for its beautiful mountain scenery and the pristine lake which is good for swimming, canoeing, and kayaking. Hiking enthusiasts will want to check out the nearby Devil’s Racetrack hiking trails which are known for their unique rock formations. 

There are several historic towns the drive passes through, including Rugby, known for its original Victorian architecture, which has earned it a place on the National Register of Historic Places. 

When to go: Spring through fall are the best times of year to appreciate the hiking and outdoor activities along this Tennessee scenic byway. 

3. Tennessee Scenic Drives: Sequatchie Valley Scenic Byway 

• Distance: 70 miles 
• Time Needed: 3 or more hours 

The Sequatchie Valley is considered one of the most picturesque places in the state, thanks to the rolling hills and gently meandering Sequatchie River. 

This is an excellent Tennessee scenic byway near Chattanooga, Knoxville, and Nashville, making it easy to include on a road trip itinerary from a number of starting points. 

Although the drive is doable in a few hours, if you’re an outdoor enthusiast, you’ll definitely want to set aside at least an entire afternoon, if not a day, to explore the valley. There are lots of hiking and biking trails accessible from the drive, and if you’re interested in a bit more of an adrenaline rush, hang-gliding and paragliding are also popular activities. There are several places that offer lessons and gliding experiences in the area. 

One of the most visited places on the Sequatchie Valley scenic byway is Fall Creek Falls State Park. This stunning gem of Tennessee is home to the highest waterfall in the eastern United States, which plummets 256 feet. Definitely plan on making a stop to visit this largest waterfall, and if you have time-add a hike to one of the other falls like Cane Creek Falls or Piney Falls.

When to go: Spring through fall is best for outdoor activities, but it’s also possible to drive this route in winter. 

4. Tennessee Scenic Drives: Woodlands Trace National Scenic Byway 

• Distance: 45 miles 
• Time Needed: 1.5 hours or more 

Known as the “Land Between The Lakes,” the Woodlands Trace National Scenic Byway connects Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley. 

Outdoor recreation is the main attraction of the area, whether it’s boating on one of the lakes, mountain biking on one of the thrilling trails, or hiking through the forest. 

There are lots of outposts, which rent equipment like canoes, kayaks, bikes, or ATVs so you don’t need to worry about having your own gear. 

Moss Creek Day Use Area is a popular place to visit thanks to the great swimming area and picnic area with grills. If you’re interested in spending a night or two, there are several campsites to choose from, like Hillman Ferry Campground. There are also some Bed & Breakfasts and cabins in the area if you’d rather not stay in a tent. 

In addition to the outdoor activities, there are other interesting historic sites like the Homeplace 1850s Working Farm and Living History Museum. You’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time to before the Civil War, and there are various interesting seasonal activities guests can take part in like candle making or woodworking. 

When to go: Each season has its benefits: summer is best for water sports, spring is known for its beautiful flowers, during the fall you can appreciate the bright autumn leaves and excellent hiking conditions, and winter is very picturesque and good for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. 

5. Tennessee Scenic Drives: Newfound Gap Scenic Byway 

• Distance: 31 miles 
• Time Needed: 1 hour or more 

If you’re looking for scenic drives in the Great Smoky Mountains, Newfound Gap should be top of the list. This is the only paved road through these mountains and has stunning scenery of vistas and forested areas. 

Driving isn’t the only thing that the Newfound Gap scenic byway is good for. The Appalachian Trail crosses the route, which any hiking enthusiast should plan on spending some time exploring. There are also several campgrounds like Smokefront Campground and places to stop for picnics like Chimney Tops picnic area and Collins Creek picnic area. 

The Newfound Gap Road is well-maintained and not difficult to drive, but it’s best to go slow not only to take in the scenery but also to avoid accidents on some of the turns the route takes. Thanks to the numerous pull-off points at overlooks like Campbell Overlook and Morton Overlook, there are plenty of spots to safely stop to get out of your car to take photos or just soak in the mountain air. 

When to go: Spring through fall are the best times of year but the drive is also open in the winter. Be sure to check before beginning your drive since the closures can happen because of the weather. 

6. Tennessee Scenic Drives: Ocoee River Byway 

• Distance: 30 miles 
• Time Needed: 1 hour or more, depending on stops 

Famous for being the first National Forest Scenic Byway established in 1988, there’s no doubt that the Ocoee River Byway remains one of the best Tennessee scenic drives. 

The route was first built in the 1830s when it was a wagon trail used for transporting copper from the copper mines in the region. 

There are lots of scenic overlooks on the drive, like the Ocoee Dam Overlook, which has a view of Sugarloaf Mountain, and Lakeview Overlook, which has a stunning view of Parksville Lake. 

The drive also holds plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation, from hiking to swimming. At the Lake Ocoee Marina, you can rent paddleboats, canoes, or other boats to explore Parksville Lake. At nearby Parksville Beach there is an excellent public swimming area as well as restrooms and a picnic area with grills and tables. 

If you have time to add a hike along with this drive, then the Benton Falls Trail is a good pick. The fairly easy hike is about three miles round-trip and takes you to the stunning Benton Falls. 

There are many places to camp along the Ocoee Scenic Byway, both for tenting and RV vehicles. Be sure to check about reservation status since some places are first-come-first-serve while others need a permit. 

When to go: To enjoy the outdoor activities on this drive, spring through fall are the best seasons.
