The Gothic-style building, with its imposing facade and sprawling grounds, has long been a source of local ghost stories and urban legends. Some claim it inspired H.P. Lovecraft’s Arkham Sanatorium.

While the original building was largely demolished in 2007, the site still attracts curiosity seekers. During October, local historical societies often organize talks and walking tours of the grounds, discussing the hospital’s history and its impact on mental health care.

4. Burkittsville, Maryland (Blair Witch Project location)

5. Eastern State Penitentiary, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Opened in 1829, Eastern State Penitentiary was one of the world’s most famous and expensive prisons. Its wagon-wheel design and emphasis on solitary confinement were revolutionary but controversial. The prison housed notorious criminals like Al Capone and bank robber Willie Sutton before closing in 1971.

During October, Eastern State Penitentiary transforms for Halloween Nights, one of the nation’s most prominent haunted attractions. Running five haunted house immersive experiences, there’s something here for all levels of thrill-factor, as well as historic tours, themed bars and live entertainment.

Daytime tours are available year-round, focusing on the prison’s architecture, famous inmates, and reform efforts. 6. The Lizzie Borden House, Fall River, Massachusetts

On August 4, 1892, Andrew and Abby Borden were found brutally murdered in their Fall River home. Andrew’s daughter, Lizzie, was the prime suspect but was acquitted after a sensational trial. The case remains unsolved, sparking endless speculation and cementing Lizzie Borden’s place in American folklore.

The Borden House now operates as a bed and breakfast, allowing guests to stay in the very rooms where the murders took place. In October, the house offers special ghost tours and séances for those brave enough to participate.

Just to the north of New York City is the incredible Hudson Valley. Indeed, this beautiful place starts only about 50 miles north of the city, but depending on traffic, it might be the best place to get out and stretch your legs after a few hours in the car.

Cherished for its gorgeous landscape on the banks of the Hudson River, there are several lovely places to visit in the Hudson Valley.

Beacon has a bustling village center with quaint boutiques, antique shops, and places to eat. Go for a hike on Mount Beacon for a great view of the valley. Dia Beacon, a contemporary art museum, is a must-see for anyone interested in the arts. 

Home to three different colleges, including Vassar and Marist, Poughkeepsie is a must-stop on any New York to Niagara road trip. There are plenty of places to eat, shop, and explore, including the Walkway Over the Hudson. For a bit of history, check out Locust Grove Estate, home to inventor Samuel Morse. 

Kingston is a city with a vast history and character in the Hudson Valley. Not only does it date back to the 17th century, but it was the first state capital of New York. Today, you’ll find tons of great shops, restaurants, and bars. Consider taking a ride on the Catskill Mountain Railroad or a Hudson River sightseeing cruise.

Albany

One hundred and sixty miles to the north of New York City the next major stop on this New York to Niagara Falls road trip is Albany, the state’s capital city. To learn all about the impressive building and state legislation, you can take a tour of the State Capitol building. 

The New York State Museum has something for everyone, including a hands-on center for kids. The Crossings at Colonie is a great park where everyone in the family can have fun hiking, biking, and being kids on the playground.

Stroll the colorful Lark Street, which is full of shops, restaurants, and galleries. To get into the beautiful wilderness of Upstate NY, don’t miss the Albany Pine Bush Preserve, one of the remaining pine bushes in the country.

Utica

Nestled at the foot of the Adirondack Mountains is the city of Utica. Although the drive west from Albany takes about an hour and a half, it’s totally doable, with a couple of super cool stops along the way.

In less than an hour’s drive west of Albany, you’ll be able to travel deep underground to discover the wonders of Howe Caverns. Fun for everyone in the family: seniors and children enjoy discounted tickets. Children four and under are free. Just make sure to reserve tickets ahead of time. 

Another great stop-off on the way to Utica is the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. Open daily, you’ll love learning all about the history of America’s pastime and seeing priceless artifacts. Discounts are offered for children, seniors, and veterans. Active military and children 6 and under are free.

Once in Utica, it’s easy to find tons of stuff to do. If you’re hoping to see more of the beautiful landscape, hop on the Adirondack Scenic Railroad. Kids will also love seeing the animals at the Utica Zoo.

Oswego

Known as “The Port City,” Oswego is a beautiful city on Lake Ontario with history, culture, and fun. History buffs will love exploring Fort Ontario and learning about its long history. Open Wednesday through Sunday, from spring until early fall.  

Other cool things to do in Oswego include checking out the murals along the Oswego River Walk and experiencing the awesome view from Flat Rock. Let the kids be kids at the Children’s Museum of Oswego, which is open Tuesdays through Sundays. 

Families looking to max out the fun in Oswego on a drive to Niagara Falls should consider staying at Splash Indoor Water Park and Resort. The fun never stops at this Clarion Hotel with its indoor water park and arcade. 

Heading west from Oswego towards Rochester, definitely make a stop at Chimney Bluffs State Park. With incredible land formations and views of the lake, you’ll be happy you made time for this awesome park. Entry fees are $5 per vehicle and only collected April 1–October 31.

Rochester

Traveling west along Lake Ontario for only an hour and a half, you’ll arrive at the next destination on this New York to Niagara Falls road trip, Rochester. There’s always something interesting to do in Rochester. That’s why it’s a no-brainer when deciding where to stop when driving from New York to Niagara Falls. 

Kids of all ages will love spending time at The Strong National Museum of Play (open daily), the Seneca Park Zoo (open daily), and the Rochester Museum & Science Center (closed Mondays).

There are so many different ways to experience the falls. You can see it from observation decks, boat tours, or even venture behind the falls for a truly unique experience. 

For a full bird’s eye view of all three falls, head up to the Niagara Falls Observation Tower on the New York side of the falls. Or get your adrenaline pumping by ziplining over the falls on the Canadian side. No matter which way you choose to experience the falls, you’ll be making memories to last a lifetime.

How Long Do I Need Driving Chicago to Niagara Falls?

The fastest route from Chicago to Niagara Falls can be done in about eight hours. But seriously, why rush? 

There’s so much to see and do along the way that it’s a much better idea to take your time and spend two to three days on the road. Then, on your way back, you can change your route and see even more of this incredible landscape as you drive from Niagara Falls to Chicago.

Northern Route #1

The first of the two Northern Routes you can take on a Chicago to Niagara Falls road trip is gorgeous. You’ll hug the coast of Lake Michigan, stopping at quaint harbor towns like Saugatuck. Then it’s on to Grand Rapids and London, crossing the US/Canada border at the Blue Water Bridge at Port Huron.

Let’s take a closer look at each of these stops:

London, ON

Leaving Grand Rapids, head east on I-69. This leg of the Chicago to Niagara Falls drive will take just about four hours and includes traveling over the US-Canada border so have your passports ready. You’ll get to see beautiful landscapes in both Michigan and Ontario on the way to your next destination, London.

For outdoor family fun in London, head to Boler Mountain. No matter the season, you’ll be in for a ton of fun, like hiking, mountain biking, tubing, rope courses, and skiing. 

Everyone in the family will love experiencing the past at the Fanshawe Pioneer Village where the past comes to life. Hours of operation vary with the season so make sure to check before heading there.
London is a great area for camping and RVing. There are tons of parks to choose from, including Prospect Hill Campground and Dalewood Conservation Area.

Northern Route #2

The second northern route option for your Chicago to Niagara Falls road trip is slightly further to the south than the first. Instead, you’ll stop in the lovely town of St. Joseph before heading on to Ann Arbor. Crossing the border in Detroit and heading on to Hamilton before reaching Niagara Falls.

St. Joseph, MI

Just over an hour and a half from Chicago, you’ll arrive in St. Joseph. Yes, it is relatively early on the road trip to Niagara Falls from Chicago. But, as one of the best beach towns in Michigan, it’s a must-stop town. Set on the banks of Lake Michigan, it’s the perfect place to spend some time before heading west toward Niagara Falls. 

Here you can enjoy the lake with the many sandy beaches like Silver Beach. With lifeguards on duty, everyone can have fun in the water. 

Definitely check out Warren Dunes State Park. Hiking up and surfing down the dunes is the best way to release energy before getting back in the car for the rest of the road trip ahead. Or, simply swim in the freshwater. If it’s a hot summer day, let the kids cool off at the Whirlpool Campus Fountain.

Ann Arbor, MI

Ann Arbor is a great stop on the road trip from Chicago to Niagara Falls and just about a 2.5-hour drive from St. Joseph on I-94E.

You’ll love exploring the beautiful campus of the University of Michigan. As a town of intellectuals, there are a bunch of great places to visit in Ann Arbor, like the University of Michigan Museum of Art and the Natural History Museum. Kids will also love going to the Ann Arbor Hands-on Museum where they’re encouraged to touch everything!

If you’re taking this trip in the summer, check out the Ann Arbor Summer Art Festival (A2SAF). There are fun things for everyone in the family. You can also paddle the Huron River or in Gallup Park for some outdoor water fun.

If you’re doing this road trip in an RV, you’ll find a bunch of nice places to park. Although they won’t be in the center of town, you’ll find great places just a short drive away, like Sun Outdoor Kensington Valley and Hell Creek Ranch Campground.

Hamilton, ON

In less than four hours of a drive from Ann Arbor on this Niagara Falls road trip, you’ll reach Hamilton. During this leg of the trip, you’ll be passing over the border into Canada so, have the proper ID ready. In Canada, you’ll travel on Highway 401, then the 403. 

Within the city limits, Hamilton has a bunch of its own waterfalls, like Albion Falls, Tews Falls, and Great Falls.

Families that love a good hike can hit the Bruce Trail– The oldest and longest in Canada. You’ll absolutely love exploring the beautiful landscape and waterfalls like Canterbury Falls. For a more relaxing stroll, head to Hamilton’s Bayfront Park.

Other awesome things to do in Hamilton include touring Dundurn Castle, the Battlefield House Museum, and Park National Historic Site. Or check out the Art Gallery of Hamilton, Museum of Steam and Technology.

Hamilton is only a short drive from Niagara Falls (about 40 mins), but it’s such a great place that it should be a major stop for your Chicago to Niagara Falls road trip.

Southern Route

To take the southern route on this Chicago to Niagara Falls road trip, you’ll head east on I-90 out of Chi-town nearly all the way to the Falls. This route will keep you in the States for the entire trip. So, you don’t need your passport. You’ll follow I-90 East nearly the entire way–Super easy!

Toledo, OH

Keeping it state-side, you’ll be passing through Indiana and into Ohio. This leg of the trip will take you just about four hours to get to Toledo.

There are tons to do in Toledo for the whole family. Get everyone out of the car and go for a hike in Maumee Bay State Park or enjoy any of the city’s Metroparks, like the brand-new Glass City Metropark.

Kids of all ages will love seeing the animals at the Toledo Zoo and Aquarium. For a real hands-on experience, consider going to the Imagination Station, where they will learn by doing (closed on Mondays).  To learn why Toledo is called Glass City, check out the art at the Toledo Museum of Art and see a glass-blowing demonstration (open Wednesday through Sunday).

On this road trip to Niagara Falls from Chicago, one of the best places to stay in Toledo is Maumee Bay State Park, especially if you’re RVing.

Cleveland, OH

From Toledo you’ll travel just over three hours on I-90E to reach Cleveland, the next stop on this road trip from Chicago to Niagara Falls.

One of the best things to do in Cleveland, no matter your age or ability, is to visit the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Here you can go for a hike, take a stroll, enjoy a ride on the scenic railroad, kayak the Cuyahoga River, and bike the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail. The best part of it all is: entrance to the Cuyahoga Valley National Park is free for everyone!

Back in the energetic city, there’s something for everyone. Kids will love the Children’s Museum of Cleveland (closed Thursdays), Great Lakes Science Museum, and Cleveland Museum of Natural History (closed Mondays). 

Make sure to spend some time on the waterfront for sports, dining, or even just a simple stroll along the water. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a must-do 

Pro-Tip: Make Cleveland your major stop on the way back to Chicago from Niagara Falls. It’s a longer drive (3.5 hours from Niagara Falls and five hours to Chicago) but totally worth it to spend a full day or two in the city.

Erie, PA

During this epic Chicago to Niagara Falls drive, Erie is a great place to get out and experience the beauty of the Great Lakes. You’ll love relaxing on the beach, like Sands Beach in nearby Harborcreek. Or, head to Presque Isle State Park, where there are great beaches, hiking, and a lighthouse to explore. 

Other things not to miss in Erie are the Zoo (open daily), Hagen History Center (closed Mondays), ExpERIEnce Children’s Museum (open Wednesday-Sunday), and the Erie Maritime Museum (open Wednesday-Sunday).  

For one of the best views of the lake, you’ll want to hike the Erie Bluffs State Park. 

If you’re looking for a super unique experience the entire family will love, head out on the waters for Scallywags Pirate Adventure. It’s one you’ll never forget!

Buffalo, NY

Now, Buffalo is literally just down the road from Niagara Falls, but it’s just a great place to spend some time that we just had to put on this itinerary as its own stop. 

There’s so much for families to do in Buffalo. Make sure to put both the Buffalo Zoo and Buffalo Museum of Science on the itinerary. The Buffalo Waterfront is the perfect place to spend some time, especially in the summer. Everyone in the family will get into the fun with things like water bikes, kayaking, roller skating and playgrounds.

When you’re ready to continue on your Niagara Falls road trip, you can opt to cross the Peace Bridge into Canada or stay stateside and head up to the falls. Either way, the drive will take about half an hour. Remember to have your documents ready for the border crossing at the Peace Bridge.

Niagara Falls, NY & ON

No matter which route you take to get here. Your final destination is the great Niagara Falls. On The US or Canadian side, this spectacular place has been a favorite destination for centuries. And it continues to be one of the best vacation spots for the entire family. 

There are so many ways to experience the falls. Check it out from observation decks on boat tours like the Maid of the Mist, which will get you up close to the base of the falls. 

For insane views, you can ride a zipline over the Canadian side of the falls. Or even consider going on a journey behind the falls! Everyone in the family will absolutely love this road trip from Chicago to Niagara Falls. Making it a family trip with memories to last a lifetime. 

Pro Tip: To fully experience the falls, you’ll want to travel to see it from both the US and Canadian sides. So, remember to bring your passports to cross the Rainbow Bridge in a car or on the pedestrian walkway.

The amount of time it will take you to drive across the country really depends on what you plan to do. If you need to get there ASAP, you could do the drive in just over 40 hours without stopping. So, yes, it’s doable. But it’s not advised. Especially on a family road trip, who wants to be cooped up in a car for 40+ hours straight? Not me. 

There’s so much to see and enjoy in this great country that it’s more likely you’ll want to stop along the way, check out the sights, and let everyone stretch their legs. A good rule of thumb would be to average five to seven hours of driving a day. 

Realistically, a New York to California road trip, no matter the route, should be done over the course of at least a week. The best family road trip, coast to coast, could take about 3 weeks. This way, you can spend quality time in great cities and explore national parks and the gorgeous American landscape. 

One of the great things about the US is the variety of terrain and climates. So when planning a road trip from New York to California, the time of year must be taken into consideration. 

The spring and fall are some of the best times to travel by car. You’ll avoid extreme temperatures, the likelihood of winter storms, and the summer crowds. It also means you can see the full bloom of springtime or the fabulous fall foliage. 

It goes without saying that you should always check the weather and be prepared for the unexpected. This could also mean taking a different route.   

Tahoe National Forest, Lake Tahoe, and the Sierra provide awesome things to do any time of year. During the summer you will be living it up on the water and hiking the magnificent mountain range. Winter sports are in high gear in Lake Tahoe. So, you can be skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling for days. 

When considering where to stay, Truckee is perfect. It’s right off I-80, and there are tons of places to stay, including campgrounds with RV parks like Truckee River RV Park and Coachland RV Park.

Pro Tip: As you cross the border from Utah into Nevada, remember to switch your clock. You’ll be in the Pacific Time Zone for the remainder of the trip.

The Bay Area has so many fun things to do no matter what your family makeup. No trip to San Fran is complete without seeing the Golden Gate Bridge or riding the cable car. 

Get out into the beauty of the redwoods in Muir Woods. Make sure to book your reservation (parking and entrance fee) for Muir Woods in advance at gomuirwoods.com. The good news for families with little ones, kids 15 and under are free.  

Everyone will have fun at Pier 39. It’s where you’ll find the Aquarium of the Bay and rides, including a carousel and roller coaster. 

The classic cross country road trip known around the world is one on the classic Route 66. It’s the best route if you’re looking for the best scenic New York to California drive. 

When it was created in 1926 by the Bureau of Public Roads, it was the first of its kind. Connecting Chicago and Los Angeles, it created a public road through America’s Southwest.  Today, much of the original road has been replaced by I-40. So, you’ll be following the path of the historic Route 66, even if the road sign reads something different. 

The beginning of this scenic cross-country road trip has the same path as Route 1–Most Direct Route mapped out above.

Leaving New York, you’ll head west on I-80 passing through Cleveland and Chicago. After Chi-town, head south on I-55 in the direction of St. Louis, Missouri, the next stop on this NY to California scenic road trip. Although the signs might read something different, at this point, you’re on good old Route 66.

Driving from New York to California, one of the most iconic structures is the Gateway Arch of St. Louis – The symbol of America’s expansion west. So, of course, you have to make a stop to see it. But St. Louis should be more than just a quick stop. Instead, you should plan to spend time there and enjoy the city. 

Families with kids will love interacting with the fountains at City Garden on a warm day. Union Station is fun for kids of all ages. It has a carousel, mini golf, and even a 3D light show. A special treat is a visit to the Butterfly House in the Missouri Botanic Gardens, where kids 3-5 enjoy a reduced rate. Picking up things for the trip at the Soulard Farmers Market is a great idea.

After St. Louis, you’ll follow I-44 West in the direction of Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Oklahoma is where you’ll find the most significant stretches of road that are the original Route 66. So, you’ll love the drive along this leg of the trip. 

Tulsa is a great next stop after St. Louis. It’s a bustling city with fun things for families. You can stretch your legs in the beautiful Woodward Park. If you want to be adventurous, take the kids to Gathering Place in South Tulsa. For educational fun, check out the Tulsa Air and Space Museum or the Tulsa Zoo. 

As you wind your way through Oklahoma, definitely make a stop at the Oklahoma Route 66 Museum in Clinton, Oklahoma. You’re in the process of traveling this iconic road, so why not learn more about it at the museum?

When traveling Route 66, it makes sense to stop by the Route 66–Sixth Street Historic District in Amarillo. It’s also a great place to grab a bite to eat. 

Get out of the car and into nature at the Palo Duro Canyon State Park. There you can take a hike and even cross the canyon on a zipline.  

If you’re traveling by RV, you should definitely consider visiting the Jack Sisemore Traveland RV Museum in Amarillo. It’s super interesting for adults and kids alike.  

For fun in the great outdoors, ride the tram at Sandia Peak to soar over the landscape, check out the Biological Park, or head to the Petrified National Forest. The Indian Pueblo Cultural Center is a great place to expand your understanding of Native Americans. You’ll see artwork and can even buy traditional foods. 

An absolute must is visiting Old Town Albuquerque. Dating back to 1709, it has been a major part of the city for centuries. Here, you’ll love seeing the adobe architecture and grabbing a bite at any of the great restaurants. 

On the drive from Albuquerque to Flagstaff, Route 66 runs straight through Winslow, Arizona. It’s a great little place where you can get out and stretch your legs a bit.

Classic Rock fans will love checking out the corner mentioned in the classic song “Take it Easy” by Jackson Browne and Glenn Frey. You can also check out the Meteor Crater in Winslow.

Flagstaff itself is a great place for families. You can ride a lift at Snowbowl, hike Red Mountain, or venture underground at the Lava River Cave. Lowell Observatory is always a treat, no matter how old you are. 

Departing Flagstaff, you’re again headed west on I-40 toward LA. You’ll drive straight through the Mojave National Preserve, so why not get out and explore the beautiful landscape? 

Pro Tip: Crossing the border into California, remember to switch to Pacific Standard Time.

The drive from Toronto to New York is about 8 hours of non-stop driving. Driving with children will require a few stops, normally every 2-3 hours (depending on your kids) so you can definitely drive it all in one day, but it will probably take more like 10 or more hours and leave no time for sightseeing.

You can easily customize your trip depending on how much time you have and how many sightseeing spots you plan to stop and enjoy!  If you want to stop and explore the attractions along the way, we would plan to take two days to drive there. 

Choosing when to take a road trip from Toronto to New York City can be challenging as every season offers something different in New York City. New York City is beautiful year-round and offers so many unique things to do, so there is never really a bad time to road trip between the two major North American hub cities.

New York State is famous for many lakes, rivers, parks, landmarks, and forests, all of which you want nice weather to explore. The most popular time of year is definitely the summer months, from June until September when temperatures are humid, and there are lots of crowds.

Summer also offers an opportunity to capture some of the beautiful sunflower farms in Upstate New York.

However, the spring months offer temperatures in the mid-20s (over 70ºF), and more than likely the weather will be sunny, allowing you to truly explore along the way with fewer crowds.

Lastly, New York is magical in the winter time right around Christmas as you can see the huge Christmas Tree at Rockefeller Centre, take a horse-drawn carriage through the inter wonderland of Central Park or take in a local light show. If you choose to visit in the winter, you will need to be prepared that many stops and attractions are seasonal and may not be open.

Weather between Toronto and New York can also be very harsh in the winter with lots of snow, so you will need to be prepared for hazardous weather and road conditions. Personally, we would not drive without snow tires. 

1. Niagara Falls

Undoubtedly the best thing to see and experience between Toronto and Canada is Niagara Falls.

You can discover and explore any of the three falls: Horseshoe Falls (located in Canada), American Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls, both located on the American side, which all come together to form the famous landmark of Niagara Falls! 

Enjoy the beautiful views that Niagara has to offer by enjoying a boat tour that takes you up close to both sets of falls. You can take a boat from the Canadian side with Maid of the Mist (American side) or Niagara City tours (Canadian side). Both boat tours give you an up-close tour of the thundering waters that form this famous natural beauty.

In Niagara Falls, New York there are lots of other fun attractions to check out, including Journey behind the Falls which allows you to explore the tunnels through the bedrock and hear the roar of the waterfalls as you stand behind the falls, or get up close on the observation deck.

A newer attraction is the historic Niagara Parks Power station which allows you to explore the first major power plant and learn all about its rich history through this interactive exhibit. 

If the weather is bad, then you may want to check out Niagara Fury, the 4D cinema that tells the story of the last ice age. Enjoy an adventure of a lifetime as you take a cable car across the Niagara River and view the Niagara rapids and the river. 

Pro Tip: You will want to pack a poncho as you are sure to get wet from the mist from the falls on either of these excursions.

Buffalo, New York

Buffalo is the second most populous location in New York State. One of our favorite places to stop and visit whenever we are in Buffalo is Walden Galleria Mall, which is home to 200 stores, and 8 full restaurants. 

Walden Galleria offers a variety of entertainment options, including arcade games at Dave and Busters, a one-of-a-kind story-driven experience at 5 Wits Adventure Entertainment, cinema, escape room, and Billy Beez indoor playground.

If you prefer an outdoor adventure, then stop at the “Grand Canyon of the East” known at Letchworth State Park. The Genesee River flows over three different waterfalls high above the lush forest floor, and you are sure to enjoy those waterfall views, and many other scenic spots as the park has over 66 miles of hiking trails.

If you don’t like hiking, then you may enjoy the nature programs, biking, kayaking, or whitewater rafting opportunities offered inside this state park, one of the top nature spots in New York.

Rochester is a city that is rich in history and heritage and is full of old industrial buildings, picturesque parks, and amazing museums for kids. 

A great pit stop for families is The Strong Museum of Play which is 100,000 square feet and home to the Toy Industry and Video Game Hall of Fame. The museum is designed to inspire curiosity in kids through interactive play experiences, including a pretend grocery store, giant Etch a Sketch, Lite Brite, an obstacle course, retro video games, and an indoor butterfly garden.

This is a great road trip stop for the whole family as it takes about three hours to explore, and also has a kid-friendly diner that even the pickiest eaters will find something to enjoy!

Pro Tip: If you are traveling at the beginning of the month, the first Friday of each month offers half off general admission!

If you are looking to stretch your legs from the long car drive, then you will want to check out the park system, which has many well-marked trails along the Erie Canal. You can explore the waterways by canoe, kayak, or a simple stroll on the paved paths.

Animal lovers will enjoy a visit to the Seneca Park Zoo, which is home to a wide variety of animals from around the world, including lions, baboons, river otters, polar bears, and many more! The great news is that the Zoo is open all year long, so you can visit no matter when you travel through Rochester.

Greek Peak Mountain Resort

This mountain resort is located in the beautiful Finger Lakes Region in Upstate New York and is the perfect halfway point for families as it is located approximately four hours from Toronto and New York City. There’s no wonder why this is one of the most popular family lake vacation destinations in the northeast.

Greek Peak offers a ski and tubing hill in the winter with nine lanes of tubing and fifty-one ski runs. In the summer, it transforms into an outdoor playground for families and offers exhilarating family attractions like a mountain roller coaster, zipline, mountain biking, and aerial courses.

You may choose to simply stay overnight, or maybe you will spend a day and enjoy the Cascades Indoor Waterpark, which is 84 degrees all year long and offers a wave pool and a variety of water slides for kids of all ages. 

Kids will also want to stop at the Bearfoot Den, which is a kids’ zone offering crafts, games, and toys for kids to enjoy. The Den is open every weekend from Friday to Sunday and also offers other family activities like hiking, biking, and yoga for overnight guests.

Pro Tip: The resort also offers babysitting services for children over two years old, so parents can enjoy dinner without the kids!

The Perfect Halfway Stopping Point – Checkout Accommodation Options Around Greek Peak

This beautiful sculpture park has 60 acres of meadows and bluestone quarries in addition to the 6.5 acres of sculptures to view. Many consider this sculpture park to be the “Stonehenge of North America”, as the designer created natural pathways out of the abandoned quarry.

This park features beautifully landscaped areas to enjoy including fountains fed by quarry springs. Its the perfect place to time stop for stretching your legs  

Pro Tip: The park is only open Thursday until Monday through Labor Day.

New York Zipline

If you are looking for thrills, don’t forget to stop at Hunter Mountain to visit one of the highest and longest ziplines in North America. Experience the amazing views of the countryside as you are over 3200 ft above sea level on this scenic skyride, on the best things to do with active and adventurous kids.

From peak to peak, this zipline is 4.6 miles and can hit speeds up to 50 miles per hour. Participants must be over 10 years old and complete the Zipline Pilot training school before ziplining, so the whole tour lasts three to four hours.

An alternate family-friendly option is the Mid Mountain Tour which takes families on six shorter ziplines, multiple rope bridges, a rappel, and nine tree platforms. The tour takes 3 hours, and participants will be attached by a harness. 

This is most definitely a spectacular way to finish your Toronto to NYC drive before you dive in to all the fun adventures that await in your final destination, the Big Apple!
