2. Lake Michigan

3. Crater Lake National Park

Location: Oregon

If you are one that enjoys snow, a visit to Crater Lake is a must for you. Located in Crater Lake, Oregon, this National Park features Crater Lake. Crater Lake is a Lake covering an inactive Volcano. It was formed more than 7,500 years ago when an eruption of a volcano collapsed at a tall peak, and the lake was formed due to rain and snowfall.

4. Finger Lakes

Location: New York

The Finger Lakes are made up of eleven long and narrow lakes that, when looked at on a map, resemble fingers (hence the name).

When most people think of New York, they think of the city that never sleeps, New York City, but if you visit upstate New York, you wouldn’t believe that the two areas are located within the same state. Upstate is filled with beautiful scenery, quiet and calming surroundings.

Consider exploring the park through its lesser-known entrances. For example, while most visitors to Yellowstone crowd the West entrance near Old Faithful, the Northeast entrance through Cooke City offers equally spectacular views with a fraction of the traffic. Many parks have these “secret” entrances that savvy travelers can use to their advantage.

Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado

Drawing 4.1 million visitors in 2023, the timed-entry Reservation system for Rocky Mountain National Park is entering its 6th year.

Best Months: April & May, September & October
Hours: Open 24 hours, 365 days a year (some extreme weather closures may occur)
Regular Entrance Fee: $30 single-day vehicle pass ($35 7-day pass)

Hours Required: 5:00 AM to 6:00 PM for the Bear Lake Corridor and 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM for the rest of the park (2-hour entry window)
Tickets Released:  60% of reservations can be applied for on the 1st of the month at 8:00 AM MDT for the following month, i.e.

• May 1, 2025 for May 23 – June 30, 2025
• June 1, 2025 for July 2025

Good to Know

Three are two different reservation tickets for this park; Option 1: Park Access + Bear Lake Road Corridor will include the entire Bear Lake Road Corridor (from the junction of Trail Ridge Road to the Bear Lake Trailhead) plus access to scenic driving routes the rest of the park.

NB Option 1 does not guarantee trailhead car parking. You may still need to park your vehicle at Rocky’s Park & Ride Parking Area and use the park’s free shuttle system to access desired trailheads. 

Option 2 is ‘rest of park’ access, excluding Bear Lake Corridor. It is valid only until October 20, 2025.

If you have booked camping, guided trips, or commercial tours, you do not need to purchase the day-use reservation in addition. Campers must pay a $36 non-refundable admin fee for reservations from May 1 to October 31, 2025.

Timed entry does not apply after 6:00 PM/2:00 PM and outside the peak summer season.

Tickets Released: Some permits are available 120 days in advance on a rolling basis. Open from 8:00 AM MST:

• The remaining reservations will be released at 7:00 PM MDT for the next day

Good to Know

The reservation system was slightly altered in 2024 to cover different areas of the park that received the most vehicular traffic. Two Medicine Valley has been removed (but may have temporary restrictions enforced). Each is a unique scenic drive in Montana and will require a different reservation.

While the timed tickets are only needed for parts of the park, you essentially can’t experience the national park over the summer without them.

Your permit for the Going-to-the-Sun road is now only valid for one day (previously three consecutive days). Likewise, North Fork permits are only valid for one day. They do not guarantee the availability of trailhead parking.

Visitors staying within the park with lodging or camping reservations or those with commercial tour reservations do not need to purchase a timed entry permit.

Mount Rainier National Park

Due to a 40% increase in visitor numbers in the past 10 years, Mount Rainier first introduced timed entry reservations for summer 2024. They are yet to announce if this will continue in 2025.

Best Months: Mid-July to September

Regular Entrance Fee: $30 per vehicle, valid 7 days

Timed Areas: Paradise Corridor and Sunrise Corridor
Reservation Cost: $2 per vehicle
Effective Dates: May 24 to September 2, 2024, for Paradise Corridor and from July 4 for Sunrise Corridor.

Good to Know 

New in 2024, we’re awaiting news on whether there will be any refinements or changes to the timed entry system at Mount Rainier.

Two sections of the park are impacted by timed entry rules, the largest of which is Paradise Corridor, the through road to the southern section of the park.

If you wish to fully explore the park, you will need separate timed entry reservations for both Paradise Corridor and Sunrise Corridor.

Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

Hours: Shenandoah National Park is open 24 hours. However, portions of Skyline Drive (the only public road through the Park) can be closed during inclement weather.

Visitors to Old Rag Mountain, including hikers on the Saddle, Ridge, and Ridge Access trails, must obtain an Old Rag day-use ticket in advance. Entry does not guarantee parking space at your chosen trailhead.

Yosemite National Park, California

Good to Know 

Horsetail Fall experiences a natural phenomenon when the falls are backlit by the sunset, making them appear to be on fire.

The unique lighting effect is anticipated for mid to late February. Given the droves of photographers and curious onlookers who wish to experience this, traffic congestion and safety concerns mean a permit is now required for these specific dates over weekends.

NB – They have not yet (as of November 2024) announced if there will be summer date restrictions for Yosemite.

Good to Know 

Chains are erected to assist in this hike over the summer months. A daily quota is given for 225 day hikers and 75 overnight backpackers. Applicants can apply on behalf of up to 6 hikers in their group for a fixed date or range of dates.

There will be a subsequent daily lottery, with the number available based on daily under-use/cancellation. You can apply for a slot two days before, from midnight to 4:00 PM. For example, you can apply on Thursday for a Saturday climb.

Carlsbad Caverns National Park

You must reserve a timed slot to see inside the caverns, the park’s main feature. Other park areas, such as hiking trails and backcountry camping, do not require a reservation.

Hours: Open 362 days (Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day)
Regular Entrance Fee:  $15 per person over 16, valid 3 days

Good to Know 

Visitors are strongly recommended to pre-book their timed entry. The reservation fee is paid online in advance, in addition to the national park entry fee per person (this can be with an annual pass; kids under 16 are free but MUST also be reserved)

You have 60 minutes from your stated entry time to enter, with slots available up to 2:30 pm.

Gateway Arch National Park

Similar to Carlsbad Caves, park entry may be free, but Gateway Arch’s main feature is the Tram Ride to The Top, which is recommended to be booked and paid for in advance (though they do hold some tickets for same-day sales).

Good to Know 

One of the more curious national parks, Gateway Arch Park, is located in the city of St. Louis. It is only 92 acres and has one predominant feature: the man-made 630-foot-tall Arch, built as a ‘Gateway to the West’.

Visitors can travel inside the arch for views from the top; a visit only takes around 7-9 minutes between tram cycles.

Memorial Day weekend activities include guided waterfall hikes, Dutch oven cooking demonstrations, and special programs about Civil War history in the Ozarks. The park’s nature center offers hands-on activities for kids, including stream ecology studies and wildlife tracking workshops. Local communities host traditional Memorial Day ceremonies featuring mountain music and craft demonstrations.

16. Glacier National Park, Montana

Memorial Day weekend marks one of the first opportunities to experience Glacier as it emerges from winter’s grip. While the famous Going-to-the-Sun Road may still be partially snow-covered, the lower elevations burst with spring activity.

Grizzly bears and cubs become active in the valleys, mountain goat kids make their first appearances, and wildflowers begin their stunning display. Waterfalls are at their most spectacular from spring snowmelt.

Apgar Campground, the park’s largest with 194 sites, opens for the season, offering stunning views of Lake McDonald and convenient access to the West Glacier village amenities. Fish Creek Campground provides 178 sites in a more secluded setting with newly renovated facilities. Sprague Creek Campground, with 25 sites, offers an intimate lakeside experience perfect for families with small children.

The Apgar Visitor Center debuts its summer programming this weekend, featuring special presentations about glacier formation and wildlife safety.

Memorial Day activities include guided hikes to Avalanche Lake, family-friendly boat tours on Lake McDonald, and evening ranger programs about the park’s Native American heritage. Kids particularly enjoy the “Junior Glacier Explorer” program and the interactive wildlife tracking workshops.

17. Letchworth State Park, New York

Known as the “Grand Canyon of the East,” Letchworth reaches peak grandeur on Memorial Day weekend. Spring rains power up the three major waterfalls, creating spectacular photo opportunities. This timing also coincides with peak bird migration through the Rio Grande corridor.

The Chisos Basin Campground, at 5,400 feet elevation, offers 60 sites with spectacular mountain views and access to the best high-country trails (no large RVs). Rio Grande Village Campground provides 100 sites near the river, featuring a newly renovated visitor center and swimming pool. The Cottonwood Campground in the South Unit offers 24 peaceful sites in a shaded grove perfect for bird watching.

Memorial Day weekend features special ranger programs, including guided desert ecology walks, border culture presentations, and night sky viewing sessions (the park is an International Dark Sky site). Epic USA National Parks to Visit in Winter

Death Valley National Park

Location: California/Nevada

Despite its somewhat desolate title, Death Valley National Park is actually home to a ton of lively scenery.

Picture massive salt flats lining the horizon, rock formations that look straight out of this world, colorful mountains dotting the roads, and a wide array of historical and desert goodness and you’ve got yourself a pretty good picture of what a visit to this gem of a national park is like.

Because Death Valley National Park is deemed one of the hottest places in the entire world, visiting during the summer months isn’t exactly recommended for a great experience (we’re talking 120+ degree temperatures!).

Winters, though, bring in cooler temperatures ranging from the mid-60s to the low 70s. Combine that with sunny skies and you’ve got yourself a perfect winter escape in one of the most unique landscapes of California, and the USA!

Arches National Park

Location: Utah

A fiery desert landscape may not be the first thing that pops to mind when you picture a winter trip, but the colder months just happen to be one of the best times of the year to pay Arches National Park a visit.

As its name may have clued you in, this beautiful national park in Utah is home to tons of natural archways (over two thousand of them!). Moreover, the park also boasts expansive mesas, otherworldly-looking rock formations that look as though they pierce the sky, and a vibrant red landscape that will make you feel as though you’re walking on Mars.

While temperatures do get chilly during the winter, it doesn’t really get cold enough to ruin the day. Moreover, Arches isn’t exactly popular during the winter months, making crowds at some of its most frequented spots almost non-existent (during summer, the crowds are so heavy a timed entry permit system has been introduced.

As if that weren’t reason enough to convince you to visit this epic national park during the winter months, the winter skies and dreamy snow-dusted La Sal Mountains in the distance make for truly magical sunrises and sunsets!

Biscayne National Park

Location: Florida

If you’d rather avoid the cold altogether and are on the lookout for a tropical escape, look no further than Biscayne National Park in Florida.

Set south of Miami, this park is so different from the rest because 95% of it is set under the water. This means you’ll definitely need to get wet in order to get to see everything, which you can do via a snorkeling or scuba diving adventure, depending on your preference.

Another way to explore for those who prefer not to swim is by booking a glass-bottom boat tour. This may not give you the chance to get super close to the marine life that calls Biscayne its home, but it’s guaranteed to provide some seriously epic encounters nonetheless.

Once you’ve explored the ocean, make sure you also check out the remaining 5% of the park, which is set on small islands and islets you can hike (or relax) on while stumbling across unique wildlife and views so good you’ll have to pinch yourself to believe they’re real!

Yellowstone National Park

Location: Idaho/Wyoming/Montana

Yellowstone may be a super popular summer destination, but how about seeing its already striking landscape from a completely different perspective?

During the colder months, Yellowstone becomes a winter wonderland of enchanting snow-dusted forests, frozen lakes, and gorgeous geysers that look straight out of this world. Moreover, you’ll also get to have the scenery at one of the most popular national parks in the entire country all to yourself!

Come November, getting to Yellowstone National Park does become a bit tougher as most roads are closed to regular traffic. Still, though, with a little planning ahead, you’ll be guaranteed to be in for a winter adventure of a lifetime!

Yellowstone is also set close to some of the country’s best ski resorts. Jackson Hole is located nearby, which is a perfect place to stay and enjoy world-class winter sports after adventuring at the park!

Canyonlands National Park

Location: Utah

Canyonland’s high season is during the spring and fall, but winter brings in picture-perfect sunsets, fewer crowds, and excellent hiking trails ready to be explored in order to take in the area’s desert magic.

Remember that snow may make a few of the trails at Canyonlands a bit treacherous, so we recommend sticking to the Island in the Sky section of the park during this time. This is the most popular part of Canyonlands, where crowds usually gather any other time of the year, making it an excellent choice to visit to get some of the park’s most famous highlights all to yourself!

Bryce Canyon National Park

Location: Utah

Ever wondered what Mars would look like if it got snowed on? If you haven’t, I bet you’re picturing it now, and the landscape at Bryce Canyon National Park during the winter months looks as close as you can get to that!

If you think Bryce Canyon’s striking red rock hoodoos are pure eye candy, imagine what they’d look like blanketed in white snow! As if that weren’t reason enough to visit, Bryce Canyon’s night skies during the winter are amazing as ever thanks to the cold and dry air, making stargazing here a true treat (make sure you bring a blanket along!).

Moreover, Bryce Canyon hosts an annual winter festival, where visitors can partake in photography classes, dancing activities, snowshoeing adventures, and more!

Mount Rainier National Park

In search of the ultimate winter wonderland? Being a glaciated peak, Mount Rainier sees an average of over 50 feet of snow during the year, making it a prime spot if fun-in-the-snow activities are what you’re after.

Whilst some of the state’s most scenic driving routes through the park are closed in winter (as are many of the wilderness centers), it still makes for an excellent day trip from Seattle without some of the prohibitive summer crowds.

Acadia National Park

Location: Maine

Even though Acadia National Park is mostly renowned for its gorgeous fall foliage, visiting during the winter months provides a totally different experience worthy of being on your bucket list.

The contrast of the snow against the coastal views of the Atlantic creates a truly stunning background perfect for all sorts of winter fun. While scenic drives can be off the cards during winter, with the Park Loop Road usually closing from December 1 through until spring, winter hiking is a common activity, but make sure you bring the right gear.

Winter sports are another winter highlight in Acadia, with 45 miles of carriage roads for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing available. Snowmobiling is another top activity in Acadia, especially for those keen to experience the park’s scenic road from a totally different angle.

Moreover, birding in Acadia during the winter is top-notch, when leafless trees open up the forest for easy viewing. Some species you may see include snowy owls, black-capped chickadees, and Harlequin ducks.

Grand Canyon National Park

Location: Arizona

What could be better than seeing the most famous natural landmark in the United States and one of the 7 Wonders of the Natural World? Seeing it blanketed in layers of snow!

While the lesser-visited North Rim section of the Grand Canyon closes during the winter, the South Rim (which tends to get super crowded any other time of the year) remains open to visitors, giving you the perfect opportunity to explore the canyon without having to share the views with hoards of people.

If you’d rather stay warm, a great way to explore the park is by driving its scenic road to Desert View. Another must-do activity is booking a flight to get a birds-eye view of the canyon, which looks even more beautiful during the winter when it’s covered by snow!

Saguaro National Park

Location: Arizona

Located less than an hour from Tucson, Arizona, Saguaro National Park still remains a bit of a hidden gem in the national parks system and a perfect go-to during the colder months!

This arid wonderland sits right in the heart of the Sonoran Desert, and its allure comes from the fact that it is home to the country’s largest cacti and saguaros, some of which can grow up to 60 feet tall!

During your visit, you can explore the park on foot by going on a hike (the Desert Discovery Nature Trail is a great way to learn about the flora in the area), taking a scenic drive amidst saguaros (the 8-mile Cactus Forest Loop Drive is a must!), or searching for ancient petroglyphs.

While snowstorms are not that common, they happen, so you may get lucky and see a scene of cacti coated in white snow! It’s certainly one of the more unique places to visit in Arizona.

Denali National Park

Location: Alaska

Alaska in winter?! If you don’t mind freezing temperatures, Denali National Park is a true treat during the winter months, even if snowfall actually starts as early as August!

Days are short in Denali during the winter, but that brings in opportunities to get glimpses of the northern lights, all while getting the landscape during the day pretty much all to yourself.

Moreover, if you happen to be visiting in February, you’ll be in for a real treat at the park’s annual Winterfest, where you’ll get to catch snow block sculpting competitions, guided walks, dog-sledding adventures, and so much more!

Note that once snow falls, the roads may frequently close at Mile 3, Park Headquarters. From late February/March ploughing begins and travelers may be able to make it as far as Mile 13, Mountain Vista Rest Area but it is weather dependent.

Entrance Fee: $15 per person (over 15 years) 7-day permit

Note that due to their remote nature, most national parks in Alaska are completely in accessible in winter. Denali is an exception due to its geographic location.

Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park

Location: Hawai’i

If you’d much rather see sunshine than snow, a visit to Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park is guaranteed to please.

Popular with snowbirds, this national park’s high season takes place during the winter, so if you don’t mind the crowds, it makes for a perfect destination to escape the cold.

As you explore the park, you’ll get to see black sandy beaches, rainforests with flora so huge you’ll feel as though you’re in a Jurassic Park setting and get to see two of the world’s most active volcanoes – Kīlauea and Mauna Loa.

Hiking is the best way to explore the park, with some trails being so unique you won’t find anything like them anywhere else in the world, including some through lava tubes and up to craters.

Everglades National Park

Location: Florida

Winters don’t really exist in Everglades. Instead, they’re usually considered the “dry” season when exploring is best!

Home to a whopping 15 million acres of pure wilderness, the park is home to a vast array of ecosystems, including marine, mangroves, swamps, and pinelands, making it a prime destination for wildlife spotting (fun fact: Everglades is the only place in the world where alligators and crocodiles co-exist!).

Among the adventures to have during the dry season at Everglades, you’ll find ranger-led hikes crafted in order for visitors to get well-acquainted with the fauna and flora in the park, night treks, independent hiking, snorkeling, scenic driving, and more!

There’s nothing quite like fall in New England. As the summer sun begins to fade, we begin to crave the feeling of crisp fall air, the tastes of freshly harvested apples, cranberries and pumpkins, and, of course, the beautiful fall foliage.

One of our favorite ways to experience this magical time of year is by taking a New England road trip. 

Typically, fall in New England runs from September 1st through late October. It’s during this time that you’ll find a number of family-friendly festivals celebrating the sights, sounds, and tastes of the season. It’s also when leaves change colors and create brilliant landscapes of yellow, orange, and red. 

Peak fall foliage generally takes place between the last weekend of September and Columbus Day. For specific information on locations and the changing of the colors check out foliage trackers like ExploreFall.com.

5 Day New England Fall Road Trip  

With Logan International Airport Boston being a big international hub airport, we have designed our New England road trip itinerary with this starting point. Next, you’ll head west to the Berkshires, up north through Vermont, and then east to the Acadia on the coast, by way of the White Mountains of New Hampshire. 

You can complete the drive from Bar Harbor back to Boston following this itinerary.

Since this trip is all about seeing the beauty of fall in New England, remember that leaves change earlier in the season, the further north and inland you are. So, if you’re visiting later in the fall, the suggestion would be to start in the north and work your way south. 

Day 1: Boston & Cape Cod, Massachusetts

There’s no better way to start an epic New England Road Trip than with a day in the great city of Boston. 

Fall is the perfect time of year to explore all the historic sites of this great city. Walk the Freedom Trail, stroll through Boston Commons, and check out the big ships in the harbor. If the weather is a little bit iffy, kids will love to visit the New England Aquarium and see all the underwater creatures. 

Boston is also a great home base to explore the surrounding area. Salem, Massachusetts, is a mere 30 minutes from downtown and has so much fun during the Halloween season. 

Driving south from the city, it’s easy to spend a day exploring Cape Cod as the fall colors change in the season. The whole family will love exploring the towns on the cape and walking along the sandy beaches. Don’t miss a visit to the Whydah Pirate Museum in West Yarmouth.

Fall on the Cape is tons of fun, with the Harwich Cranberry & Arts Festival in September and the Yarmouth Seaside Festival in October. Both are tons of fun for the family, with music, vendors, and fireworks.

Day 2: Berkshires, Massachusetts

In less than a three-hour drive west on I-90 it’s on to the second leg of this New England road trip, The Berkshires. Set in Western Massachusetts, this landscape is an escape into nature any time of year. But fall foliage transforms the area to be even more breathtaking.

Any New England road trip should plan for at least a day in the Berkshires. Here, it’s easy to fill your fall road trip itinerary with outdoor activities like hiking, biking, and even horseback riding.

In the fall, the whole family will love picking apples or pumpkins and sipping cider at places like Bartlett’s or Furnace Brook Winery at Hilltop Orchards. The Naumkeag Pumpkin Show in Stockbridge is a favorite with families throughout October.

The Berkshires are known for their excellent Farm-to-Table culture. They have wonderful restaurants and farmers’ markets. Towns like Pittsfield, Lenox, and Williamstown have excellent markets to explore through October. 

For outdoor adventures like ziplining and alpine sliding, head to Jiminy Peak or Berkshire Eastern Mountain Resort.

Pro Tip: The Berkshires are also the perfect place to camp. With dozens of campsites in the area, it’s easy to find the one for you, including RV hookups like at Fernwood Forest Campground. 

If you have a little longer in the state, Massachusetts also has a number of incredible scenic drives, including the Mohawk Trail in the Berkshires youcould add to this itinerary, time permitting. 

Day 3: Burlington, Vermont

Nothing quite compares to Vermont in the fall. The Green Mountains are picturesque as they change colors from green to brown, orange, and yellow. There’s no better way to enjoy the season than taking a New England fall road trip to Burlington with your family. 

The drive from the Berkshires to Burlington takes only about three and a half hours without stopping. But instead of rushing along, we recommend stopping off at Woodstock (VT, not NY) and Montpelier. Both are quintessential Vermont towns and are postcard-perfect in the fall.

An excellent family activity is visiting the Ben & Jerry’s ice cream factory, just a short distance from Burlington. No matter your age, you’ll love learning about Ben and Jerry’s journey to becoming the kings of ice cream.

In Burlington, don’t miss exploring Church Street Marketplace, walking along the shore of Lake Champlain on the Greenway, or enjoying any of the great restaurants in town.

Stowe, Vermont, is another favorite place among leaf-peepers, and it’s less than an hour from Burlington, making for a convenient detour on your New England fall road trip. With extra time in your itinerary, we’d suggest staying an additional day in the area and heading up the Gondola SkyRide at Stowe Mountain Resort.

Day 5: Acadia National Park & Bar Harbor, Maine

On the final leg of this splendid New England fall road trip, set your sights on Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor, Maine. 

Coming from New Hampshire, the drive should take just under four hours. If you’re not in a huge rush, consider going by way of Rangeley Lakes National Scenic Byway. It’s one of the best parts of driving in New England.

Once you arrive, you’ll understand why Acadia National Park is one of the most visited parks in the country. Visiting this beautiful landscape is a bucket list item and a must on any fall road trip itinerary. Besides the gorgeous fall colors, visiting Acadia in the fall means fewer crowds but colder temperatures.  

Many come to Acadia to hike the picturesque terrain but there are plenty of scenic driving routes to enjoy, too. The Acadia Byway (Route 3) will take you onto Mt. Desert Island around the park and to Bar Harbor. 

Driving up Cadillac Mountain is a favorite New England fall road trip activity that is permitted until late October. Vehicle reservations are required to drive to Cadillac Summit, so ensure you’ve reserved this journey in advance (30% of reservations go on sale 90 days in advance, the remaining reservations open 2 days in advance).

If the timing aligns, the Acadia Night Sky Festival and Acadia Oktoberfest are two great things to add to your New England fall road trip itinerary. 

The historic coastal town of Bar Harbor is the perfect place to stay when visiting Acadia. There are plenty of places to stay, small shops and quaint restaurants. As the season winds down, so does the town. So, it’s best to visit in September and October. 

Pro Tip: Acadia National Park requires an Entrance Pass. Get yours in advance on the NPS website, or if you have a 4th grader in the family, you could be eligible for free entry!

1. Rocky Mountain National Park

Location: Colorado

It’s not exactly a secret that Rocky Mountain National Park is one of the most beautiful parks in the entire country, but once the temperatures start to drop, this gorgeous place in Colorado turns into a wonderland for glorious views, incredible nature draped in autumn hues, and some of the best opportunities to see wildlife up close.

The dramatic landscape of Rocky Mountain National Park was carved by water and humongous glaciers, making the scenery look like something out of a painting.

As you explore, you’ll stumble across some of the highest peaks in the country, get treated to views of hundreds of alpine lakes and streams, and get to walk over some of the dreamiest hiking trails in the world.

Even though fall does get a little chilly at Rocky Mountain National Park, it’s highly considered the best time of the year to visit for two reasons: One is that fall foliage covers the gorgeous Trail Ridge Road, which is one of the most scenic highways in the United States and seeing it blanketed by golden aspens is a scene unlike any other.

Secondly, fall brings in the elk rut, which is when elk arrive in the area for mating season. Not only will you be able to see hundreds of them up close, but you’ll also be able to attend the annual Elk Fest organized by the park to learn everything about these mountain-roaming creatures through music, live entertainment, storytelling, and interactive activities.

2. Shenandoah National Park

Location: Virginia

Tucked away in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, Shenandoah National Park is a mecca for those looking for crisp mountain air and glorious fall foliage. Being only an hour from Washington, D.C., it’s no surprise it’s one of the most popular national parks on the East Coast!

Fall foliage in Shenandoah National Park usually begins in early October and lasts until mid-November, making the season quite long.

During your visit, you can explore the park in various ways. A favorite for those limited on time is driving the scenic Skyline Road, Virginia, which is considered a treat to the eyes any time of the year but looks especially stunning when fall colors drape the scenery.

Hiking is another must. Shenandoah boasts 516 miles worth of trails, with 101 miles being part of the famous Appalachian Trail! Throughout your hiking adventures, you’ll be able to enjoy fall colors in their full splendor and see plenty of waterfalls, mountains, caverns, and more.

Entrance Fee: $30 per private vehicle, valid for seven days

Seasonal Closures: Fall is the peak season for Shenandoah, so do expect queuing and crowds, especially on weekends. You can check out precise conditions on their webcams!

The park stays open throughout winter; however, icy conditions can close Skyline Drive from mid-November through February. Dickey Ridge Visitor Center and lodges within the park close in late November. Most campsites close on October 30, while Big Meadow stays open until November 30 for magnificent fall camping.

3. Acadia National Park

Location: Maine

Acadia National Park definitely takes the cake when it comes to quintessential fall destinations on the East Coast.

Even though Acadia is gorgeous year-round, there’s no better time to visit than the fall months, especially if vibrant autumn colors are what you’re after.

Home to a humongous offering of glorious natural landscapes ranging from woodlands to mountains, lakes, and dramatic coastlines, this is one of the best national parks to visit in the fall if you’re after picturesque views and a variety of recreational activities.

Once September creeps in, Acadia starts showing beautiful fall colors ranging from crisp gold to vibrant reds. Peak season usually happens around mid-October, but even if you can’t make it during that time, you’ll still find a wonderland of colors if you visit a bit earlier or later.

Some of the best ways to make the most out of fall in Acadia include hiking to Cadillac Mountain for panoramic views, driving the Park Loop Road across the park, hiking the Bubbles Nubble Loop to strike off a variety of landscapes, and exploring Eagles Lake by kayak or canoe.

Entrance Fee: $30 per person, valid for 7 days

Seasonal Closures: Not all parts of the park are open over winter; it’s best to check the winter closures schedule before planning a visit from December to April. Most campgrounds close by October 14/21, while Park Loop Road closes on December 1.

Brilliant ways to explore more of nature’s beauty in Maine

4. Arches National Park

Location: Utah

Perhaps a desert isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when you think of visiting national parks in the fall, but we absolutely had to include Arches National Park in the list because this time of the year is the best time to explore this gem in Utah.

Weather-wise, the temperatures in Arches start to drop in autumn, making it an ideal time for hiking and exploring.

The trails at this Mighty 5 national park are usually mild and perfect for introducing visitors to hiking in the desert. Visitors can also see colossal natural arches and strange rock formations that look almost out of this world.

Some of the best things to do at Arches National Park include hiking to Landscape Arch to see the largest natural rock arch in the world, experiencing a sunrise at Delicate Arch (this is the arch depicted on Utah’s license plates!), driving the Arches Scenic Drive, admiring the scenery at Park Avenue Point, standing under Double Arch, and more.

Entrance Fee: $30 per private vehicle, valid for seven days

Seasonal Closures: The park is open throughout the year, 24 hours a day. However, if you’re visiting before October 31, you’ll also need a timed entry permit.

5. Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Location: North Carolina and Tennessee

With so many species of trees within its boundaries, Great Smoky Mountains National Park is another wonderland to visit if you want to see fall tones. Seeing vibrant hues of yellows, oranges, and reds backdropped by snow-capped mountains is definitely something everyone should experience at least once in their lives!

Some of the best things to do in the Smokies to fully experience the season are hiking to see a few of the park’s waterfalls (they look absolutely stunning surrounded by autumn colors!), driving the scenic roads that traverse the park (Newfound Gap Road, Morton Overlook, and Clingman’s Dome Road are all amazing), and renting a cabin inside the park to enjoy your very own personal slice of fall in the park.

Fall also brings a plethora of fun festivals, including the Dollywood Harvest Festival, which celebrates the harvest season; the Fall Harvest at the Island, which honors the fall; and the Octoberfest at Ober, which features the area’s German heritage.

Fall foliage usually begins around early October and can be viewed throughout the month until early November. It usually peaks in mid-October.

Entrance Fee: There is no entry fee to Great Smoky Mountains National Park (from 2023, be aware a Parking Tag system will be implemented – applicable if you’ll be parking your car for more than 15 minutes)

Seasonal Closures: The park is open 24 hours a day, though there can be seasonal road closures due to weather conditions in winter – stay in touch with current information on Twitter @SmokiesRoadsNPS. Some campgrounds close between the end of October and the end of November, Cades Cove and Smokemount are open year-round.

6. Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Location: Ohio

As the only national park in Ohio, Cuyahoga Valley is one of the best national parks to visit in the fall if you’d rather check out somewhere that’s not on everyone’s usual radar.

Here, you’ll enjoy crisp evenings and bright sunny days, making this time of year ideal for hiking and exploring (and you’ll find fewer bugs than in the summer!).

Fall foliage usually peaks around the third week of October, but you’ll be able to enjoy the colors pretty much all month, making it one of the prettiest scenic drives in Ohio.

One of the favorite ways for visitors to explore Cuyahoga is by hopping on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad Train, which, as its name may have clued you in, is a train that traverses the valley and provides some of the most beautiful views the entire park has to offer.

Another way to explore is to hike a few trails inside the park. There are over 120 miles of them on the menu. If you’re limited on time, we recommend focusing on the Brandywine Falls trail to see a 65-foot waterfall, the Virginia Kendall Ledges Trail to walk down sandstone rock “ledges,” and the Pine Grove Trail to see beautiful colors.

7. Mount Rainier National Park

Location: Washington

Boasting an active volcano and the most glaciated mountain in the continental United States, Mount Rainier is another wonderful option in PNW when choosing what national parks to visit in the fall.

Mount Rainier is special because it encompasses many different ecosystems, ranging from lowland forests to wetlands and alpine tundra. Moreover, there are 26 named glaciers here and over 1,000 species of plants and animals, many of which are incredibly endangered and have found a safe haven inside the park.

Once the fall season begins, Mount Rainier bursts into life with different activities. An easy day trip from Seattle, a must-do is going on a naturalist-guided walk to spot Roosevelt Elk during the breeding season in September. Other fun things to do during the autumn include going berry picking and mushroom foraging.

As for hiking, some of the best fall hikes to try include Reflection Lakes, The Morain Trail, Third Burroughs, and the Knapsack Pass. Horseback riding is also a wonderful way to explore the park.

Seasonal Closures: The park is open year-round. However, it is recommended that visitors check road conditions before setting out. Many of the visitor centers and campgrounds close by mid-October.

Note that timed entry was introduced to Mount Rainier NP in 2024; summer special conditions for Sunrise Corridor and Paradise Corridor should be lifted by early September and should not impact your fall driving plans

8. Bryce Canyon National Park

Location: Utah

Bryce Canyon National Park is guaranteed to please if you’re more in the mood to escape fall altogether and experience an entirely different landscape.

This striking national park in Utah is famed for being home to the most extensive collection of hoodoos in the world, but due to its location in the desert, summers tend to get scorching hot and winters particularly cold, making fall an ideal time to visit for bearable temperatures.

While there aren’t any fall-themed activities during the season, fall offers a wonderful chance to explore some of Bryce Canyon’s most famous parts without the hordes of crowds, but before the frostiest days of winter.

Some of the best ways to make the most out of your visit include hiking the Queen’s Garden to Navajo Loop, following the Fairyland Loop, and joining a ranger-led program to understand the park’s unique geology fully.

Seasonal Closures: The park is open year-round, and North Campground is always open (no reservations, first come, first served from 7 October); Sunset Campground closes from November 1 – April 14.

9. Grand Canyon National Park

Location: Arizona

With the summer crowds dwindling at the beginning of September, fall is a beautiful time of the year to visit the United States’ most iconic national park.

Not only will you see one of the country’s most internationally recognized natural landscapes without so many people around, but fall means crisp air and much more comfortable temperatures for hiking.

Even though the Grand Canyon isn’t exactly a destination for foliage, if you want to add that to your itinerary, the North Rim section of the park has plenty of patches of golden aspens.

This brings in a unique perspective of the landscape, which looks absolutely gorgeous when splashed with bright yellow tones, especially in late September and early October.

Moreover, fall is also a great time to see the Grand Canyon’s wildlife. With cooler temperatures and crowds gone, animals like elk, mule deer, chipmunks, bats, and plenty more reptiles start showing up on trails and even around some of the lodges and campsites at the park.

Seasonal Closures: The South Rim is open year-round, with reservations still recommended for lodging camping throughout the fall. North Rim closes on October 15.

10. Glacier National Park

Location: Montana

Home to vast glaciers and over 1 million acres of striking scenery that bursts to life this time of the year with glorious hues of gold, visiting Glacier National Park during the fall is magical.

You’ll be treated to views of jagged peaks, mild meadows, and cascading waterfalls here. As if that weren’t enough, wildlife encounters are more common during the fall season when crowds are gone and temperatures are mild, so you’ll get to spot different species like bears, hawks, and golden eagles.
