Here’s a little secret: Winter just happens to be one of the best seasons to visit some of the most sought-after national parks in the country. Not only will you find fewer crowds to share the views with, but winter also brings in unique landscapes and scenery you’re not bound to find any other time of the year.

Death Valley National Park

Location: California/Nevada

Despite its somewhat desolate title, Death Valley National Park is actually home to a ton of lively scenery.

Picture massive salt flats lining the horizon, rock formations that look straight out of this world, colorful mountains dotting the roads, and a wide array of historical and desert goodness and you’ve got yourself a pretty good picture of what a visit to this gem of a national park is like.

Because Death Valley National Park is deemed one of the hottest places in the entire world, visiting during the summer months isn’t exactly recommended for a great experience (we’re talking 120+ degree temperatures!).

Winters, though, bring in cooler temperatures ranging from the mid-60s to the low 70s. Combine that with sunny skies and you’ve got yourself a perfect winter escape in one of the most unique landscapes of California, and the USA!

Arches National Park

Location: Utah

A fiery desert landscape may not be the first thing that pops to mind when you picture a winter trip, but the colder months just happen to be one of the best times of the year to pay Arches National Park a visit.

As its name may have clued you in, this beautiful national park in Utah is home to tons of natural archways (over two thousand of them!). Moreover, the park also boasts expansive mesas, otherworldly-looking rock formations that look as though they pierce the sky, and a vibrant red landscape that will make you feel as though you’re walking on Mars.

While temperatures do get chilly during the winter, it doesn’t really get cold enough to ruin the day. Moreover, Arches isn’t exactly popular during the winter months, making crowds at some of its most frequented spots almost non-existent (during summer, the crowds are so heavy a timed entry permit system has been introduced.

As if that weren’t reason enough to convince you to visit this epic national park during the winter months, the winter skies and dreamy snow-dusted La Sal Mountains in the distance make for truly magical sunrises and sunsets!

Biscayne National Park

Location: Florida

If you’d rather avoid the cold altogether and are on the lookout for a tropical escape, look no further than Biscayne National Park in Florida.

Set south of Miami, this park is so different from the rest because 95% of it is set under the water. This means you’ll definitely need to get wet in order to get to see everything, which you can do via a snorkeling or scuba diving adventure, depending on your preference.

Another way to explore for those who prefer not to swim is by booking a glass-bottom boat tour. This may not give you the chance to get super close to the marine life that calls Biscayne its home, but it’s guaranteed to provide some seriously epic encounters nonetheless.

Once you’ve explored the ocean, make sure you also check out the remaining 5% of the park, which is set on small islands and islets you can hike (or relax) on while stumbling across unique wildlife and views so good you’ll have to pinch yourself to believe they’re real!

Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone may be a super popular summer destination, but how about seeing its already striking landscape from a completely different perspective?

Moreover, you’ll also get to have the scenery at one of the most popular national parks in the entire country all to yourself!

Come November, getting to Yellowstone National Park does become a bit tougher as most roads are closed to regular traffic. Still, though, with a little planning ahead, you’ll be guaranteed to be in for a winter adventure of a lifetime!

Yellowstone is also set close to some of the country’s best ski resorts. Jackson Hole is located nearby, which is a perfect place to stay and enjoy world-class winter sports after adventuring at the park!

Canyonlands National Park

Location: Utah

Canyonland’s high season is during the spring and fall, but winter brings in picture-perfect sunsets, fewer crowds, and excellent hiking trails ready to be explored in order to take in the area’s desert magic.

Remember that snow may make a few of the trails at Canyonlands a bit treacherous, so we recommend sticking to the Island in the Sky section of the park during this time. While scenic drives can be off the cards during winter, with the Park Loop Road usually closing from December 1 through until spring, winter hiking is a common activity, but make sure you bring the right gear.

Winter sports are another winter highlight in Acadia, with 45 miles of carriage roads for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing available. Snowmobiling is another top activity in Acadia, especially for those keen to experience the park’s scenic road from a totally different angle.

Grand Canyon National Park

While the lesser-visited North Rim section of the Grand Canyon closes during the winter, the South Rim (which tends to get super crowded any other time of the year) remains open to visitors, giving you the perfect opportunity to explore the canyon without having to share the views with hoards of people.

If you’d rather stay warm, a great way to explore the park is by driving its scenic road to Desert View. Another must-do activity is booking a flight to get a birds-eye view of the canyon, which looks even more beautiful during the winter when it’s covered by snow!

Saguaro National Park

Location: Arizona

Located less than an hour from Tucson, Arizona, Saguaro National Park still remains a bit of a hidden gem in the national parks system and a perfect go-to during the colder months!

This arid wonderland sits right in the heart of the Sonoran Desert, and its allure comes from the fact that it is home to the country’s largest cacti and saguaros, some of which can grow up to 60 feet tall!

During your visit, you can explore the park on foot by going on a hike (the Desert Discovery Nature Trail is a great way to learn about the flora in the area), taking a scenic drive amidst saguaros (the 8-mile Cactus Forest Loop Drive is a must!), or searching for ancient petroglyphs.

While snowstorms are not that common, they happen, so you may get lucky and see a scene of cacti coated in white snow! It’s certainly one of the more unique places to visit in Arizona.

Denali National Park

Location: Alaska

Alaska in winter?! If you don’t mind freezing temperatures, Denali National Park is a true treat during the winter months, even if snowfall actually starts as early as August!

Days are short in Denali during the winter, but that brings in opportunities to get glimpses of the northern lights, all while getting the landscape during the day pretty much all to yourself.

Moreover, if you happen to be visiting in February, you’ll be in for a real treat at the park’s annual Winterfest, where you’ll get to catch snow block sculpting competitions, guided walks, dog-sledding adventures, and so much more!

Note that once snow falls, the roads may frequently close at Mile 3, Park Headquarters. From late February/March ploughing begins and travelers may be able to make it as far as Mile 13, Mountain Vista Rest Area but it is weather dependent.

Note that due to their remote nature, most national parks in Alaska are completely in accessible in winter. Denali is an exception due to its geographic location.

Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park

Location: Hawai’i

If you’d much rather see sunshine than snow, a visit to Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park is guaranteed to please.

Popular with snowbirds, this national park’s high season takes place during the winter, so if you don’t mind the crowds, it makes for a perfect destination to escape the cold.

Once winter creeps in, the mountains surrounding Lake Tahoe become a mecca for fun winter sports, including cross-country skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, ice skating, and sleigh rides. 

As if that weren’t enough, hiking in the snow is a thing here, with plenty of trails available to take you to secluded beaches that look just as striking when dusted in white.

A can’t-miss hiking destination is the Vikingsholm Castle On Emerald Bay, which is a castle on an island in the middle of the lake that looks as though it belongs on a fairytale in winter.

15. New York City, New York

We couldn’t round out our list of Winter Wonderlands without including New York City. While there may be less chance of snow than some of the destinations on our list, New York City transforms into a winter wonderland during the holiday season, making it one of the most iconic Christmas destinations in the world.

Central Park sparkles with snow, and families can enjoy ice skating at Rockefeller Center beneath the famous towering Christmas tree. The city’s dazzling window displays, especially along Fifth Avenue, add to the festive spirit.

Holiday markets pop up in Bryant Park and Union Square, offering seasonal treats and unique gifts. The Radio City Christmas Spectacular and the New Year’s Eve ball drop in Times Square draw visitors from around the globe, making winter in New York an unforgettable experience.

Wyoming has some of the most iconic Wild West landscapes in the United States, thanks to the combination of mountains, red rock canyons, and forests. Whether you’re looking for scenic drives in Wyoming to bring you to Yellowstone National Park, or simply in search of an off-the-beaten-path drive to explore the wilderness, then read on.

A lot of the roads in Wyoming we cover in this guide could be entire vacations in themselves, thanks to all the opportunities for camping, hiking, fishing, or skiing. 

However, it’s also easy to turn many of them into shorter trips that could be done in the afternoon, making it possible to plan your time based on what you hope to see and do during your road trip.

You’ll climb over 5,000 feet in the short 68 miles of the drive and pass 20 mountains which are over 12,000 feet. There are several pull-off points, such as the Vista Point Rest Area, where you can park your car to get photos and appreciate the mountain scenery. 

The drive officially begins in Red Lodge, Montana, then crosses south into Wyoming before heading west to Yellowstone. Beartooth Scenic Byway gets its name from one of the iconic peaks you’ll spot on this drive. The almost perfect pyramid looks more like a “bear tooth” than a mountain.

Another popular stop is at the Top of the World Store, which is about halfway through the drive. It’s a great place to pick up ice cream or a souvenir while enjoying the view from 9,396 feet. 

When to go: This Wyoming scenic drive is only open seasonally, typically between Memorial Day and Labor Day, as long as the weather permits. Late spring or early fall are often good times since the weather is pleasant, and you can still skip the crowds of summer tourists. 

Along the way, the road travels through parts of the Wapiti Valley and has excellent views of the Shoshone River. 

Not long after you leave the city of Cody, you’ll come across the historic Buffalo Bill Dam, originally constructed in 1910. It’s worth stopping to view this dam to get some dizzying views of the canyon. 

In the Wapiti Valley section of the drive, be prepared to see some fascinating geologic formations like rock towers that look like they could have been carved by humans. The area is also known for outdoor activities like hiking, river rafting, and fishing. 

When to go: This drive is open year-round, but keep in mind that many of the lodging options including those in Yellowstone will be closed during the winter.

This is one of the lesser traveled scenic drives in Wyoming, but it certainly isn’t at a shortage of natural beauty. You’ll go through parts of Bighorn National Forest, Ten Sleep Canyon, and the Cloud Peak Wilderness which the drive was named after. 

The landscape along this Wyoming scenic byway is very diverse. 

There are plenty of turn-off spots where you can park your car, get some photos of the mountain vistas, or stop for a picnic lunch. 

When to go: Summer is usually the best time of year for this drive since, during winter, the roads can get a bit slippery and difficult to navigate.

If you’re hoping to visit places like Yellowstone National Park, Grand Teton National Park, and Jackson Hole, then it is one of the Wyoming scenic byways you won’t want to miss. 

The start and end points of this drive are Pinedale and Dubois, and it’s open year-round, although during the winter you’ll want to check the road conditions of the mountain passes before starting. 

From here, the drive passes through parts of the Bridger-Teton National Forest to reach Jackson, Wyoming, which is one of the most popular skiing destinations in the United States. It’s worth spending at least an afternoon, if not a few days, in Jackson to explore the city and stunning mountains surrounding it. 

Jackson is also a good home base for exploring Grand Teton National Park, or you can camp within the park itself if you’re interested in more outdoor adventure. 

This town is small, but it has the biggest population of Rocky Mountain Big Horn Sheep in the entire US which you can learn about at the National Bighorn Sheep Interpretive Center. 

When to go: This Wyoming scenic drive is open year-round; summer is better if you’re interested in hiking, or if you’re traveling to Jackson for skiing, then winter is perfect. 

One of the characteristic sights along this drive is the hoodoos, which are strange geologic rock formations that have been created by wind erosion. These rock pillars are the perfect spots to get photos of your Wyoming road trip! 

Although this is one of the Wyoming scenic byways which already takes you far from civilization, the drive also has plenty of opportunities for even more adventures on one of the hiking trails. 

Traveling from Seattle to Yellowstone is an excellent road trip thanks to the beautiful scenery and numerous other state and national parks you’ll pass through. 

Just visiting Yellowstone alone would make the trip worth it, but the adventure doesn’t need to stop there – you’ll encounter incredible natural landmarks, historic towns, and stunning wilderness, which all beckon to be explored along the way. 

With so many places to visit, we’ve put together this guide with some of the best attractions along the route so you can create a Seattle to Yellowstone road trip itinerary that fits your time frame and travel style. 

These spectacular falls are one of Washington’s top natural attractions, and it’s no secret why. Plummeting 270 feet, the waterfall is an absolutely jaw-dropping sight. 

There are two observation decks which are open year-round, as well as picnic areas and a gift shop to pick up snacks and souvenirs, the best way to start your long journey into eastern Washington state.

Spokane, Washington

About a five-hour drive from Seattle if you drive direct, Spokane is a perfect place to spend the night (or a few nights) on your road trip to Yellowstone. 

This city is family-friendly and has a great variety of cultural attractions as well as parks and natural beauty. 

Washington’s two largest state parks-Riverside State Park and Mount Spokane State Park-are both definitely worth visiting. They have excellent trails and spots for fishing, hiking, and swimming. 

In the downtown area of Spokane, you’ll find some of the city’s famous landmarks, like a pavilion that was constructed for the World’s Fair in 1974. Nature is found right in the middle of the city as well, thanks to the Riverfront Park where you can see Spokane Falls. 

A fun family activity in Spokane is the SkyRide gondola. This ride takes you right over the Spokane River for some great sights of the city and the waterfalls. 

If you’re staying for a night or two, you might want to check out the arts or nightlife scene of the city.

Not far from Spokane, Lake Coeur d’Alene is a perfect first stop in Idaho during your Seattle to Yellowstone road trip. 

The 135 miles of shoreline offer plenty of room for lots of outdoor fun, whether you decide to go hiking or rent a paddle boat for a day out on the water. 

Lake Coeur d’Alene also has some excellent beaches like Pebble Beach and Sanders Beach which are great spots for swimming, picnicking, or just relaxing by the scenic shoreline. 

Missoula, Montana

A nature-lovers paradise, Missoula beckons with fun activities like hiking in the mountains, horseback riding, and fishing. 

The Clark Fork, Bitterroot, and Blackfoot rivers converge at the city, and water sports are particularly popular pastimes. For a relaxing day, you can rent inner tubes to float down the gentle areas of the rivers, or if you’re in search of more adrenaline, then kayaking may be a good option.  

The fun university town of Missoula also has a great cultural scene with theaters, art galleries, and excellent dining options. It’s a perfect place to spend a night or two to enjoy the best of the Montana wilderness as you make your way from Seattle to Yellowstone.

Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park, Montana

One of the gems of Montana, Lewis and Clark Caverns is an incredible place to visit for the whole family. It’s historically significant owing to its title of being Montana’s first state park, and it’s known for its other-worldly limestone caves filled with stalagmites, stalactites, and enormous rock columns, which give the caves the appearance of an underground cathedral. 

Don’t worry-the caves have all been equipped with electric lighting and handrails, and tour guides will accompany groups to bring them through the maze of tunnels to learn about the incredible geologic process of cave formation. 

Tours of the caverns are offered between May 1 and September 30, and during the hot summer months, not only will you enjoy the stunning natural formations but also some natural air conditioning thanks to the cool temperatures of the caverns! 

Lewis and Clark Caverns are easy to do as a daily activity, or you can also spend a night at the campground if you want to get a real experience of big sky Montana.

Bozeman, Montana

Yellowstone National Park

From Bozeman to the North Entrance of Yellowstone is about an hour and a half, and it’s about two hours of driving to reach the West Entrance of the park. 

We’d highly recommend that you book your accommodation in Yellowstone well in advance (if you’re traveling in the summer, booking the winter before is a good idea), since lodges and campgrounds will fill up very quickly. 

West Yellowstone is the most popular of Yellowstone‘s four entrances on account of how close it is to many of the famous geysers such as Old Faithful. It’s also a convenient entrance to use for visiting the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone.

Idaho Falls, Idaho

Taking the south route back between Seattle and Yellowstone, you’ll drive right through Idaho Falls which is known for its amazing waterfalls (maybe you guessed by the name?). 

There are lots of options for camping, hiking, water sports, and horseback riding, as well as great activities and culture in the city itself. 

Families will want to stop to visit the Idaho Falls Zoo, which has a great petting zoo that young kids will enjoy. There are also family-friendly museums to learn about the history of the area and the Lewis and Clark expeditions. 

It’s only about a four-hour drive between Yellowstone and Idaho Falls, but because of all the things to explore, it’s worth spending at least a day, if not two or three, to get a chance to explore.

Craters of the Moon, Idaho

Visiting this National Monument on your drive from Yellowstone to Seattle is a must; you’ll truly feel like you’ve left planet Earth behind and are walking on the surface of the moon!

The landscape was created from oozing lava which seeped up from fissures in the ground. As it spread, it created a surreal environment of lava beds, tree molds, and strange lava formations covering nearly 620 square miles! 

The Space Research Center is also a great place to visit for families. Young kids will love getting Lunar Ranger Badges and learning about how the area was used in the process of training NASA astronauts for landing on the moon!

We’d also highly recommend checking out the lava tubes, which are underground tunnels created by the channels of lava. 

Craters of the Moon is a little over two hours from Idaho Falls, making it a nice day activity during your road trip between Seattle and Yellowstone.

Sawtooth National Forest, Idaho

The Snake River is a particularly popular tourist attraction thanks to the possibilities of water rafting on the blue waters and miles of hiking trails through the mountain landscape. 

Pro Tip: There aren’t any major cities in the Sawtooth Mountains, but you can find lodges and accommodation near the town of Stanley, but make sure you book a room well in advance. For those who want to be more immersed in the outdoors, camping is also a great option!

Portland, Oregon

Making your way back up through the Pacific Northwest, it’s worth taking a slight detour on I-84 to go through Portland, Oregon. 

Eccentric, fun, and full of opportunities for outdoor adventure, it’s no wonder why Portland is such a popular city to visit. 

Spend a day hiking around Mount Tabor, then head downtown to check out the fantastic restaurants and culinary scenes the city has to offer. Local coffee shops abound, and Portland is said to have some of the best coffee anywhere in the U.S.!

After a trip full of mountain scenery, experience a new kind of natural beauty at the Portland Japanese Garden. These artistically curated gardens are full of amazing flowers, picturesque bridges, and tranquil ponds covering about 12 acres.

Mount Rainier National Park, Washington

On the southeast side of Seattle, Mt. Rainier National Park makes a perfect way to round off your Seattle to Yellowstone road trip. 

The iconic peak of Mt. Rainier is one of the best-known natural landmarks in the Pacific Northwest. Some people don’t realize that it’s also an active volcano that last erupted about 150 years ago! 

The park is a popular place for hiking, mountain climbing, and biking. Although it’s possible to visit the park in a day, we’d recommend at least spending a night or two either at a campsite or lodge so you don’t feel rushed. 

The glaciated peaks and mountain rivers of this park are stunning year-round, but spring is particularly beautiful thanks to the fields of mountain wildflowers. Painting the mountainsides with bright gold and purple, it’s no wonder that Mt. Rainier ends up in so many postcard photographs!
